    Hi!! I am wondering if there's a way I could write a script to read an OpenFlight .flt file, take the poly count and some other data out and throw it onto an excel spreadsheet? Has anyone tried anything similar or know where I could start
    looking to make a script that could do this?

    DB:3.51:Using Visual Basic To Read Openflight File Info And Put It In Excel? mm

    Since there is probably little to be gained from re-inventing the wheel, the recommended place to start would be to search for a library that understands the database format used for the flt files, and see whether that library is usable from VB .Net.
    SourceForge seems to have a library for pretty much any database in general use.

    Google SourceForge and OpenFlight.
    But if you wanted to start from scratch there's no reason that VB can't do it. The file supports standard numeric and string formats,it uses fixed length records, and it has a reasonably straightforward heirarchical data structure.

    Hi Sabiya K,
    Compared with writing code, it would be easier complished using:
    A good Oracle ultility - Toad
    http://www.quest.com/toad-for-oracle/
    Sqlload External tables - first save Excel spreadsheet to CSV format
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/120001/load-excel-data-sheet-to-oracle-database
    Using code, this has been introduced in Armin's post, you need first read data from excel spreadsheet(you can refer to Beste's code but change the namespace a bit), and then write the data into Oracle database with the support of .NET Framework Data Provider
    for Oracle. http://connectionstrings.com/oracle#p15
    Besides, Oracle is a third party product, and we cannot provide a very detailed solution in this forum. Please consider the below Oracle forum on moving data into Oracle databases if you need.

    Hello,

    I have made a application in Microsoft Excel 2010 using visual basic macros and am trying to implement it into visual studio express 2010 for windows phone. So far, the only problem I am having is that visual studio is not recognizing a few VB functions
    that I used in my excel macro. These are int(), rnd(), chr(), mid(), and len(). Do you know how to activate thes functions or what alternatives there are to use in visual studio 2010?

    Thanks!!

    DB:3.35:Converting Excel Visual Basic To Windows Phone Visual Basic 2010 7a

    you must get off the 'language functions' and begin to think 'class methods':
    int() - Integer.Parse(..)
    rnd() - obj Random and obj.Next(min,max) method (see the help)
    chr() - Char.ConvertFromutf32
    mid() - variableString.SubString(start, length)
    len() - variableString.Length
    You have to forget one time forever the 'functions' provided by 'old' VisualBasic, that are in .Net only for compatibility (bad error in myopinion).please, mark this as answer if it is THE answer

    DB:3.28:Export To Excel With Javascript/Vbscript Or With Plsql(Html Table) x7

    i have searched for a way to export data from OracleXe to excel without losing formatting .
    So far i have found 2 possible relatively easy ways that i am still researching
    (i do not include the ask tom sylk format way of exporting )

    1 to export the query to a html table, while using stylesheets for formatting
    (using microsoft specific styles)

    2. use of javascript/vbscript to fill an array and write this array to excel with use
    of visual basic for applications in excel.This also provides charting capabilities.

    I am still researching this two ways, and have
    encountered a few obstacles (help would be appreciated)

    1 the first way:
    a. create a button " export to excel"
    b. create the following pl/sql procedure:

    owa_util.mime_header('application/vnd.ms-excel');
    owa_util.http_header_close;
    HTP.PRINT('html');
    HTP.PRINT('head');
    HTP.PRINT('meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html"');
    HTP.PRINT('titleTitle of the HTML File/title');
    HTP.PRINT('/head');

    HTP.PRINT('body TEXT="#000000" BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF"');
    HTP.PRINT('h1Heading in the HTML File/h1');
    HTP.PRINT('pSome text in the HTML file.');
    HTP.PRINT('/body');

    HTP.PRINT('/html');
    htmldb_application.g_page_text_generated := true;
    htmldb_application.g_unrecoverable_error := true;

    c: run the procedure conditionally based on the button "export to excel"

    the problem with this way is that using htmldb_application.g_unrecoverable_error := true; is not the ideal way, because it
    stops further processing, but if i leave it out, the export doesn't happen.

    To export to excel while retaining data formatting you have to use microsoft excel
    specific styles(Seedocumentation on the microsoft site)

    2.The second way:
    a create a pl/sql procedure or sql query.
    b use this query to fill a vbscript/javascript array with values
    c write these values to excel with use of vba in excel :

    the obstacle i encountered here was that i dont know how to export the result of a
    query to a visual basic script or javascript array.

    DB:3.28:Export To Excel With Javascript/Vbscript Or With Plsql(Html Table) x7

    Thank you for your reply Dietmar,
    I did this a while back so i have forgoten what the problem was. I will find out what the problem was an post it

    DB:3.21:Is Using Excel Through Automation With Java Possible ? 8f

    Hi, I'm currently a Visual Basic developper thinking of moving to a java based RAD technology.

    For a couple projects, I need to generate Excel Spreadsheets and present them to the user. I usually do this in VB by using the COM object provided by Excel, instancing it and using the Range([cellname]).value property to write data in the sheet.

    Is their any way to do a similar thing in Java, or does this level of comfort come solely by using a Microsoft developpement product (thus more integrated with office) ?

    Thanks in advance.

    DB:3.21:Is Using Excel Through Automation With Java Possible ? 8f

    1. Writing java functions in MS Visual J++ 6.0, instead of in MS VB, and then compiling as a COM function has been the only way I've been able to mix the convenience of spreadsheet IO (alas, still in Excel) with the powerful functions we can write in Java.

    2. It's ironic java programmers must still build IO interfaces in their IDEs every time they want to write use a new java function, while MS has made user-written VB functions available to all Excel users (even to MS Word users). Last time I looked, the Star Office speadsheet only allows writing functions in ersatz VB (Sun Basic) instead of in Java.

    3. To Sun: Please make java available to the masses by giving us a spreadsheet that runs user-written java functions. The spreadsheet is the most powerful programming paradigm around. Remember when Lotus made a zillion $? You can make more money from Gates's vision than by imitating his products.

    The easiest way to do this would be to use Process.Start(filepath) because it does not require you to include references to Office libraries, manage COM objectsor to use late binding with Object type which can lead to coding errors. It also allows
    Windows to choose the correct program to open it with - this can be a problem when you use Excel interop libnraries that are older version than the file itself.
    Here's some code that should do what you are asking. It assumes you have a button on your form name Button1

I started looking into doing this within excel using visual basic script but then thought it might be easier to do using Labview read and write to excel file function. Has anyone done anything like this and can offer any tips that might help? If I direct the read from excel function to the host folder containing the excel spreadsheets, how do I get it to open each speadsheet once without issing any? i'm assuming its not as easy as making file open path *.*.

    Thank you for the help.

What I will like to know if there is a way of getting this through Visual basi. I will like to do a menu in visual basic with buttons for all the reports then bring a submenu within visual (the program) wich asks for the date ranges and then using the sql language and the date range; bring the report in excel. I know how to design the buttons (a menu) and submenu through visual basic, but I don;t know how to open and design these excel reports using the sql language. I am using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in Auto CAD and MS Excel with the help of my colleague who is VB Expert. I would like to learn more in Visual Basic programming. I am confused where to start and how, Visual Basic or Visual Basic .Net.

    DB:3.17:Visual Basic Beginner cz

    As Cor points out, VB can mean different things. The two main streams are VBA and VB.Net.
    VBA is a dialect of Basic that is hosted by an application e.g. Excel, Word, Access, etc. To effectively use VBA you need to know the object model for the application. E.g. in Excel how WorkBook relates to WorkSheet, what is mean by a Range and a Cell. Learning
    VBA in one application can help with others since the underlying language is the same but object models can be different.
    VB.Net is a general purpose programming language that is related to VBA but not as closely as previous versions of VB (i.e. version 6 and earlier - these are now considered obsolete but there's still a lot of of VB6 about).
    With VB.Net it is possible to use the other applications (e.g. Excel) using what is called interop services. Howver before you can do tthat you would need to have some knowledge of VB.Net.
    Which to choose? That depends on where you want to go. The most general is VB.Net so if you want to move away from AutoCad and Excel that's probably the place to look. If you want to stick with Office application then VBA is the obvious choice.Regards David R

    Just a note : I removed the space between the double quotes in your formula
    =IF(ISBLANK(C17),""
    If you leave that space, it could give you an error with formulas. you may have notice in the last column "Line Total" you're getting #Value in empty cells. That is cause by putting a space between those double quotes.

    Hi sumangalahunagund
    The easiest way is probably using Access and not use VBA.
    Link your Excel sheet into Access
    Link your SQL Server table into Access
    Use the query wizard to create a query that returns the records of the linked Excel sheet.
    Modify the query and switch the Query Type to Append Query. In the dialog then select as Table Name the linked SQL Server table and klick OK.
    In the grid now select for each column of your linked Excel Sheet to which column in your linked SQL Server table the value should be appended.
    Save the query and run it.

    I record macros through Excel, and then edit in Visual Basic. The default format for the cell references in Visual Basic appears to be R1C1 style. However, since this is not what I am using day-to-day, the formulas are difficult to understand. Is there
    a way to change the default format VB uses when I'm recording through Excel from R1C1 to A1 style reference? I know I can manually edit each time I enter a formula and change the FormulaR1C1 to just Formula and paste in my formula from Excel, I'm just hoping
    there's a way to change this default so it always records Selection.Formula = "=A1*B1" or whatever formula I write. Thanks!

    Hi,
    if you intend to use formula in your code, then don't try to record a macro

    e.g
    in cell A20 you want to Summarize A1:A17

    Sub Formula_SUM ()
    Range("A20") = "=SUM(A1:A17)"
    End Sub

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

    in cell C1 you want: if W100 then "positive" else W10

    Sub Formula_IF ()
    Range("C1") = "=IF(W100,""positive"",W10)"
    End Sub

    Note

    Hi
    How do I access another program from Excel? What I'd like to do is click on a line in Excel with information about a journal and have Excel automatically go to another program, paste one of the fields from the line and send a search request. The other program is a Windows XP program.
    The other programs are library catalog client programs (not the actual library catalog program itself), one is used for acquisitions, ordering and paying for books and journals, the other is used for cataloging, adding the information for books and journals, like the journal name, publisher, call number and so on.
    The products are from a company called Endeavor and the library catalog product is called Voyager.
    I haven't worked much with Visual Basic since version 3 or Excel much, and so I'm not sure what the questions are that I should be asking :)
    The following is some additional information if it helps make what I'm trying to do more evident. I have sent anote to customer support for the programs. Does it seem that if a program has the following classes defined that they are probably documented for customers?
    In Excel from the Visual Basic editor when I click Tools + References, I cannot uncheck Visual Basic for Applications or Microsoft Excel 10.0 Object Library. In addition to those I'm checking one called Acquisitions (I think that's the Voyager Acquisitions client).
    Then when I go to the Object Browser for Acquistitions I see the classes
    globals clsAcqInCat clsClaimedItem clsCommunication clsMarkedItem clsReceiptHist
    When I click clsCommunication I see the members list
    BroadcastInvoiceLineItemChange BroadcastLineItemChange BroadcastVendorChange LineItemCollection LineItemID VendorCode and so on
    My most advanced work with Excel was translating a VB 2.0 project that worked with an earlier library catalog to a macro in Excel that worked with the same catalog using DDE. So I'm wondering where do I start the interaction between Excel and the other programs. I'm sure the references will help me to get started.
    Any recommendations about whether I should try the same from Visual Basic instead of from Excel?
    Another option is for me to try and write a Visual Basic program that will access both Excel (or another data source--could be a text file or comma delimited file exported from Excel) and the other program.
    Could anyone recommend a source of information, or example code, or any other recommendations?
    Have a nice day John Paul Fullerton

    You make it sound like it's intentional that Apple's Migration Assistant doesn't always work perfectly, and that is somehow Microsoft's fault. Microsoft doesn't build Apple's tools or operating system. Office 2011 works fine on operating system it was

    That is correct. Excel 2008 can not run VBA macros or use add-ins. There are NO options. It simply can't be done. The only thing you can do is upgrade to office 2011.

    Hi allI
    am new to programming, and new to Visual Basic.  I just downloaded VB
    2005 Express Edition about a week ago, and I have been taking the msdn
    video lessons. I am on video 6 of the 16 videos. There are so many
    books out there for Visual Basic that I don't know where to start.Maybe
    if I tell you what my goal is for using Visual Basic that will help you
    point me in the right direction.  My company has an Information
    Technology Applications Programmer position open.  They will hire
    someone who has experience with Visual Basic before they hire someone
    who does not have experience with Visual Basic.  In order to
    demonstrate the experience that I have in Visual Basic, I plan to write
    a program that monthly generates reports from data in Excel.  The
    program will have to organize the data, compile statistics, and report
    the monthly statistics.  I know I have a lot to learn.  That is why I
    am asking for your help.I generally learn easily by writing
    code, and by trial and error.  I've written all of my own html code on
    www.geocities.com/terceslil.  I learned by my own trial and error
    experiences, and not from reading any book.  I believe I will need to
    learn more about Visual Basic in order to write the program to generate
    monthly reports.So now that you know my goal, please tell me if
    you think the following books will help, or if you know of any other
    good books to get me started on the right track.  These are just a few that I've been looking at:Visual Basic 2005 for Dummies  Bill SempfVisual Basic 2005 Express Edition for Dummies   Richard MansfieldBuild a Program Now! Patrice PellandMicrosoft Visual Basic 2005 Step by Step  Michael HalvorsonMicrosoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition Programming for the Absolute BeginnerVisual Basic .NET Power Tools
    Evangelos Petroutsos, Richard MansfieldI
    know the Visual Basic .NET Power Tools is more advance, but I plan on
    getting there.  I also noticed when I registered that it said Build
    a Program Now! by Patrice Pelland may be offered to me because I
    registered.  Did anyone get this from Microsoft when they registered?
    Of course I am concerned about the cost of the books, CD tutotials,
    and/or learning software piling up, but will spend what is necessary in
    order to get a good grasp on Visual Basic.Any help you offer will be greatly appreciated.Thanks

    Hi,

    I've got COM clients that I can't change today...but I want new code I write to be in vb.net 2005...my COM client is in VBA...

    So, I tried the walkthrough
    Walkthrough: Creating COM Objects with Visual Basic 2005

    I can use my com class from vb6, but from a module in excel, when I create the object via the exact same code, i get an
    'automation error'

    What am I missing?

    I'm using early binding in my examples (adding a ref to my library)

    thanks in advance,
    bsierad

    DB:2.99:Walkthrough: Creating Com Objects With Visual Basic 2005 sz

    So, assuming this works from VB6 and not from XL, then here's what I would suggest:

    a) Try a simple case in VS2005 - Create a COM class with one public method that returns a string, for instance, and then see if you can get this to work in XL (but works in VB6).   Make sure you build it to register it as well.    If you cannot, then then fault lies in XL and you might try that forum.   Otherwise, if this does work (but fails with what you are using), it might be something specific to your server (say dependencies not found or potentiall incompatible interfaces you are exposing)

    b) Also, as a workaround, you may try calling your code late-bound in XL (e.g. dim x as object : set x = createobject (your object) and seeing if that works for you.

    One more question: How can I input text on this same borderless transparent form during runtime?

    Without seeing the code that you are using to create a transparent form it is difficult to know the approach that you should use. Some of the procedures for making a form transparent also mean that it will not respond to mouseclicks. I would
    not rcommend that you attempt to implement this procedure using a transparent form, but that you instead use the screen copy approach as perthe example above.

    To get user input into your form create a text input dialog and insert code in the form double click event to open the dialog.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa983602(v=vs.71).aspx
    The dialog looks like this:
    Imports System.Windows.Forms

    Public Class Dialog1

    Public ReadOnly Property DialogText() As String
    Get
    Return TextBox1.Text
    End Get
    End Property

    Private Sub OK_Button_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles OK_Button.Click
    Me.DialogResult = System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK
    Me.Close()

    Private Sub Cancel_Button_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Cancel_Button.Click
    Me.DialogResult = System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.Cancel
    Me.Close()
    End Sub

    End Class

    and you call it from the main form like this:
    Private Sub Form1_MouseDoubleClick(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.MouseEventArgs) Handles Me.MouseDoubleClick
    Dim dlg As New Dialog1
    dlg.ShowDialog()

    Another option - if you prefer to use an easy Type to work with - you can simply use a Double instead of TimeDate Type.
    Now.ToOADate
    returns a double representing a Day - so you can represent a Second by multiplying it by 86400.
    Public Class Form2
    Private Sub Form2_Load(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
    Dim Q As Double = Now.ToOADate * 86400
    ' do something that takes time
    Threading.Thread.Sleep(1564)
    ' - - then -
    Text = CStr(Now.ToOADate * 86400 - Q)

    DB:2.96:How To Open An Excel File ? (From Windows Forms) Im Using Visual C++ Express Edition ss

    Hello:
    I'm using Visual C express edition and my project requires to open an Excel file [in order to read and writedata from/to some cells]. I have experience in C, however I'm not sure if the Excel file to beopened would be called
    a Child process (due to be running in the background, while the main program and interface to the user is a Windows Form).
    Firstly, My project starts with a Windows form which includes a button.A FileDialog is opened after clicking such button. (By the way,I found an example that opens a FileDialog -after clicking a button-and tries to open
    graphic files. Eventhough I was able to open the FileDialog and handle the FileOk event, I couldn't open the graphic files selected. I'm not sure if the problem is located in the fileStream section)...returning to my project,
    a FileDialog is needed in order to open the Excel file required.
    Could you please give me an example about how to open an Excel file (by using a FileDialog)? I would really appreciate it if you could include code lines to illustrate such procedure. Both the Excell application and the Windows form must be on the screen
    (the user must be able to select either window).
    Secondly (and one step further), I'm aware about how to read an write to Excel cells in Visual Basic (for example Cells(I, J).Value = 100); Do you know how to read/write Excel cells in Visual C? Could you also include an example? Moreover,

    Is there anyway to change the font size while you are in Excel 2010 Visual Basic Editor?

    In the Visual Basic Editor, select Tools Options...
    Activate the Editor Format tab of the Options dialog.
    You can specify a font (a fixed width font such as Courier New or Consolas works best) and a font size, as well as colors for different aspects of the code.
    Choose a larger font size if the current one is too small.
    Click OK when done.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum. A quick internet search on your error message provided the following link:

    Argument not optional (Visual Basic)

    Sounds like an argument is missing, possibly.

    It is good practice to start a new question when you need something answering, as mentioned in How to ask a question in SAS Support Communities?

    If you need more information then you'll need to supply more information, e.g. the relevant part of your program, which would be good to do in a new question, as already mentioned.

    If the error is occurring in VB then it might be worth trying to post your question to a VB forum, if you haven't already or if you can't get an answer here.

    Regards,

    Amir.

    Hi austxcara,

    You can treat Excel files as datasources and use classic ADO to read/write to them. However, it require that the data is structured in a database manner, i e tables. If that's not the case then the only workable approach is to use automation as Ji shows.

    DB:2.94:How To Export Datagridview To Excel Sheet In Visual Basic 2010? kf

    Hello,

    EDIT Added more information after initial post
    To start off, I do not have a comprehensive example to do this but by following the thoughts below you should have a good foundation.
    Getting non Office automation out of the way, you can't format items in Excel this way.
    Using Automation, be cognitive of how objects are created and disposed of, see link below on the Two Dot Rule

    In my MSDN article below see OpenWorkSheets.vb
    Assuming your DataGridView has a DataTable for a DataSource you would loop through each row/column make a decision on where it goes and what formatting you want. In the links below I have an article on how to open, create, modify sheet data. In the code
    example below is a short example of setting font and row height. The secret here is knowing the objects, how to cast them and their limitations and faults. For instance, setting the row height using a numeric index will not properly release objects while using
    a alpha index will as shown below

    In the code below please note note the commented out line for xlRows which cast the variable as a range and uses a numeric, this works but will not clean up properly as does many times using a numeric for index while the line below it is the best method, provide
    a alpha-numeric address and does not need type casting.

    What version of the Compact Framework are you using? The Process class is available from v2.0 and higher.

    If you need the Process class under CF v1.x, try the OpenNETCF SDF v1.4:

    Or else if the OpenNETCF isn't an option, you could P/Invoke ShellExecuteEx as described in this thread.

    I want a macro that will use "save as" to create a copy of a file and send it to a different folder. I want the macro to use the same filename but insert the current date.

    Can the Visual Basic do this?

    If so, how?

    DB:2.94:Using Visual Basic In Excel Macro To Insert The Current Date Into A New Filename xk

    Hi Tom,
    I have a similar question about using "Save As". This is the original location code:

    ' 345) Change directory to [C:\Grant_Reporting\Run] fromN:\Grant_Reporting\Run
    ChDir "C:\Grant_Reporting\Run"
    ' 346) Save workbook as [Changed N to C] Run_.xlsx
    Application.DisplayAlerts = False
    ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:="C:\Grant_Reporting\Run\Run__.xlsm", _
    FileFormat:=xlOpenXMLWorkbookMacroEnabled, CreateBackup:=False
    Application.DisplayAlerts = True

    A bit later, I need to save again in the same locarion, but with the name changed to
    C:\Grant_Reporting\Run\\(thisneeds to bethe value of this cell: Worksheets("Sheet1").Range("T2").Value)
    It is typically "Run 13200" which is the fiscal year - 13concatenated withthe Julian day number of the calendar year - this is for Wednesday July 18th 2012 (200).

    I inserted this prompt, but it would be much better to just automatically save using the new file name:
    ' 419) Insert prompt to save file
    MsgBox "Note the name of the run: " Worksheets("Sheet1").Range("T2").Value " and save the file manually (Save As) under that name. Then continue with Weekly_Cycle_Part_2."

    If you don't mind replying, I'd certainly appreciate it!!!

    Thanks in advance my friend,

    Accountant II

    DB:2.94:C# In Excel d3

    Most of what you end up working with are excel classes. While there are some small differences in syntax, in the office automation context, vb and c# will look very similar.
    One thing you may want to consider is to host your code in your own class library. Then, you could write your code in C#. All you would need to do is reference your DLL in your code modules. The code modules in excel, word, etc - would still need to be in
    VB, but most of your code could still be in C#.JP

    Hi, im quite new in Visual Basic, i exported data to excel from an access database using VB2012, i would like to know how to set text alignment (Left, Center or Right), and how to draw cells borders using VB Code. Thanks!

    DB:2.93:Formating Excel Export Data Visual Basic 9f

    Hello,
    The basics are shown to get at formatting in
    this project under OpenWorksheets.OpenExcelWriteData but does not show exactly what you want, the key is this is a starting point.
    For example in my code below shows how to do formatting of numbers.
    xlRange1.NumberFormat = $#,##0.00
    With that thought perhaps we can type xlRange. and see what is available memberwise? We can see there is HorizontalAlighment and VertialAlignment. With some research we can get the constants as shown below
    xlRange1.HorizontalAlignment = Excel.XlHAlign.xlHAlignRight
    xlRange1.VerticalAlignment = Excel.XlHAlign.xlHAlignCenter
    So with that I highly advise checking out using the above logic what is available to you when using Excel automation.
