I have the following subroutine (see below). I would like it to state "No matching xref names found." if there are no xrefs attached, or say "All xrefs have been detached." if it does detach any. As it stands now, it displays "All xrefs have been detached", but if there are no xrefs attached when I run this, it does not display "No matching xref names found." I can make it account for one case or the other, but not borh. How do I cover both conditions?

    Thanks very much.

    (initget "Yes No")
(setq DetXrefs (getkword "\nDetach all Xrefs? [Y/N]"))

    (command "-xref" "d" "*")
(progn (command "-xref" "d" "*") (prompt "All xrefs have been detached")
    )

    )

DB:3.28:Re: How Do I Reflect Xref Properties? ss

Thanks Tim - I think I understand now. If the variable name you want to use in a routine (i.e. locally) also happens to be used/named somewhere else outside the routine (i.e. globally), then you can force the routine to confine where it looks for the variable name to just the current routine, until it ends.

    2: Reload the xref
3: Unload the xref if it was originally unloaded to begin with

    Any takers?

    DB:3.02:Re: (Nested) Xref Reload dp

All this is in an effort to purge out layers that no longer exist in xrefed layers. I am leading up to doing a visretain flip of the switch coupled with a temporary layer state save to preserve how the drawing was setup before the process. I thought I mentioned in my posts my need to reload all xrefs, but restoring the state of those xrefs to their unload/load state. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi, as of 2007 attributes cannot be used in xrefs and be edited. We attach a common titleblock to all dwg's for a job, but each sheet has to have the attributes inserted as a block. IE Drawing names, drawn by etc.

Bedit only allows the editing of the attribute definition within the xref.

So I was wondering if that has changed.

    Thanks,

All righty then, should have tried it before I replied. I didn't realize inserting the tba would also show the tbk as an attachment. Very nice.

I have dabbled with sheet sets and so far I am not having much luck. So I guess for now I will use the "new" way you just explained.

Any idea how i can fix this?

DB:2.89:Re: Xref On Source Arrow Now Showing Up Properly 7j

Creating custom symbols should be pretty straight forward as long as all the parameters are in place. Iinheritedthese symbols from the previous owner, so i don't have the authority to modify how they look, i just have to make them work so that all the new revisions will look the same as they used to.

I've created a copy of all the HA1D? and HA1S? files, and edited those to make them look the way i need to. seems to be working for now so i'll stick to using the ACADE generic ones and modify them as needed.

    1. eTransmit:
It would be great if you could add more drawings to eTransmit and it would
automatically add any associated xrefs attached to the file. However, if
drawings shared the same xref it would only add the xref once. This would
help to eliminate creating multiple eTransmit files and or one eTransmit
file that the user has to manual add drawings, but may miss some xrefs.

    2. Rectang:
When creating a rectangle and supplying dimensions the last prompt should
be more clean as to the action required by the user. Something like "Select
quadrant or [Dimensions]:". The prompt is a repeat of the second prompt and
    is confusing to new users.

    Command: _rectang
Specify first corner point or [Chamfer/Elevation/Fillet/Thickness/Width]:
Specify other corner point or [Dimensions]: D
Specify length for rectangles 0'-0": 10
Specify width for rectangles 0'-0": 5
Specify other corner point or [Dimensions]:

    3. Fillet:
Why does the "mUltiple" option require a "u" for selection instead of an "m"
like other commands, e.g., Copy, select objects, "m" for multiple copies?

    Command: _fillet
Current settings: Mode = Trim, Radius = 0"
    Select first object or [Polyline/Radius/Trim/mUltiple]:

    4. Insert:
It would be nice to have a preview window on the insert dialog box to verify
the block selected for insertion. I know that the tool palette and design
center display block images. But, there are allot of times you need to use
insert over the palette or design center.

    5. Repeating commands:
AutoCAD R10 or 12 had the ability to swoop tablet menus that would
automatically repeat most commands. It would be great to have that
    functionality in AutoCAD 2004.

    Hi Doug

Having implemented the frame updated by rhesusminus (thanks) the cross references make sense. However, the source and destination arrows on off sheet wires do not seem to follow the same convention. I am seeing that they pick up the correct drawing/sheet reference but the location code seemsto be incorrect. Firstly it only has a number and secondly the number does not match the grid position on the drawing. This is both ways, source and destination. Does the reference use the same mechanism as the parent/child referencing or is there another undocumented feature I have been unable to find!!?

I can bypass the xref issue by merging my xrefs into the scene file when rendering but then I get a second error saying that it can't find the save location (because I'm trying to save onto the workstation).Ideally I'd like to be able to have the xrefs and save locations on the workstation but render (using backburner) on the rendering machine. I think the rendering machine would somehow need access to the workstation hard drive via the network. I read through this quickly so I may be missing something, do you mean
update the xrefs when the xref manager notifies you that an xref has changed
and you click on the notification to reload them?

If so then yes, as far as I know, you are up the creek. When you tell it to
update it automatically reloads the unloaded xrefs. It drives me nuts also
but that is the way it is at least in 2006. I have 08 loaded but I have not
tried that to see if it has changed.

Right now when the notification pops up I go to the manager and reload only
the ones that have changed. It is not as handy but at least the
notification lets you know something has changed.

I'm having a real problem with my xrefs getting scrambled everytime I copy my project to a different computer or location. I take work home frequently, so I end up using a jump drive to move my project files from computer to the other. ADT doesn't lose the paths if I copy the main project file, but it does seem to mix up the xrefs within the project. For example, after I copy the files to a new computer and repath the entire project, I'll open a drawing to find that a shell xref has been replaced with a site plan xref. This happens with an alarming frequency and creates a lot of extra work.

    Any thoughts?

If this happens and I do not reload the xref while in the current editing secession and save and close my drawing (without reloading changed xrefs) then the next time I open the drawing the xref paths in my drawing becomes full path instead of the relative which I had originally set.

    Hi Shiraz,

This may be an unsupported configuration, since Autodesk products require a Microsoft network/environment to function properly.

few of our systems are not loading the xrefs automatically. it show as UNRESOLVED until relaoad it manually. also this systems are not able to attach / overlay xrefs as relative path.

    DB:2.72:Re: Xref Reload Issue cp

Demand loading of external references does (should) not affect the automatic loading of external references. Demand loading is a feature that allows AutoCAD to improve performance by limiting what gets loaded into your drawing under certain conditions, provided that Spatial and Layer Indexes are turned on. With demand loading enabled, if you have a clipped Xref, AutoCAD will only load the elements needed to to show the clipped extents. If you have frozen layers, the objects on those layers will not be loaded.

When demand loading is "Enabled", a lock is placed on the externally referenced files, and others cannot open or copy over that file. "Enabled with Copy" allows demand loading to be used, but a local, temporary copy of the external reference is made, so that the source file is not locked. If you are not making use of demand loading, you can choose the "Disabled" option, and demand loading will not be active.

I cannot explain why the original poster was having issues with the loading of external references with "Enabled with Copy" chosen. Perhaps the lag time in making the copy from a network location to a local location was exceeding some time limit in AutoCAD, and it was then stopping the loading and moving on.

If this is true, you will have problems b ecause the pn recognizes the files being on the local drive x: for one machine, and on \\server from another. so any time one tries to do anything adt wants to repath to show the correct path. you need to partition the drive (as i understand) so that both copies of adt reads that the files are in the same location.

I find that it is best that one computer is used as the server only and that other computer access it.

Ever since upgrading to ACAD 2006 I constantly get a warning box pop up saying my XREFs have to be reloaded. I check XREF manager and there is a red exclamation mark against the XREFS. I open the offending XREF, do an audit (usually finds a couple even though I haven't made any changes to the drawing - figure that one out), save the drawing and exit.
If I check the XREF manager again the red exclamation mark has gone but a yellow caution sign is still there and I can't get rid of it.

I start the XREF flyout (by typing XREF on the command line). An inspection of the listed XREFs shows unresolved references (see the icon on the left, wherever there is a blue cross).

The only way to fix it is to select the files that show up as unresolved, right-click RELOAD, then right-click UNLOAD.

First, slap the user a couple times, then open their file change all
    the colors to BYLAYER.
    CH
    C
    BYLAYER
    *
You may need to explode blocks to accomplish this there are some lisp
routines to speed that process. Then set visretain to 1 type:
    LA
    C
    8
    *|*
...to make all the xref layers grey. The "|" (bar) character is just
above the enter key it is in all xref layer names.

If you can't slap them, modify a copy of the file in your own directory
but be sure to use the xref visretain technique above since they will
surely update the file you'll have to go through it all again.

I'm having a problem with binding Xrefs. I have purged the referenced files and I don't think they are corrupted (there's no other indication of this). I'm trying to go from 2005 to 2000, and according to Autodesk downloads, no object enabler is necessary, I guess since 2005 saves in the native format. Anyway, the error message I get is, "At least one of the specified xrefs failed to bind due to a problem with a proxy object. If you selected more than one xref, repeat the operation for one xref at a time" I actually only have one xref, our master civil xref, but it does have a survey and arch. site plan referenced into it in turn. Any ideas? Is it possible that I may need a specific enabler for the surveyor's survey software even though Autodesk says 2005 = 2000 conversion needs no enablers?

    DB:2.68:Re: Binding Xrefs k1

For clone() it really is dependent on the calling code as to how it
will handle a NULL return value. Wherever you're seeing a fatal
error we probably should do some less drastic error handling.

Or just error handling at all. If memory serves, it happened when
returning NULL from clone() and attempting to grab a grip on the object, at
the stage where AutoCAD tries to create a clone for dragging.

When we have to send drawings to consultants, we send them our plot drawings
which is a level specific drawing for each plotted sheet for plotting from
layout tab. All mechanical and architectural reference drawings which are
normally xreffed in, are bound. This way, the consultant can go to model tab
if necessary and retrieve any information they need. We used to send the
design drawing with xrefs but that confused people. The other interesting
thing is the consultants (architects, structural and electrial engineers)
are not interested in using any of our information digitially and the
electronic copy we send them is easier to e-mail then send hard copy by mail
    or fax.

Overlay is my preferred method. Overlays eliminate the problems
    caused
    by
    circular xrefs.

One advantage is that you can overlay drawings into each other. For
    example
you can overlay the 1st floor plan into the 2nd floor plan and then
    overlay
the 2nd floor plan into the 1st floor plan). If using attached xrefs,
    this
    is not possible to do.

    DB:2.68:Re: Renaming Xref Drawings 9c

We are faced with a problem at work. Hundreds of drawings have been created with lots of XREFs "Overlayed" in each drawing. The client is now saying that they have a different standard for naming drawings that are used as XREFs. We can easily use Windows Explore to rename the XREF files in the XREF directory. However, once we do that, none of those XREFs will be found when we open the (hundreds of) drawings which have them "Overlayed". We'd like to find some way to BATCH rename the XREFs (Saved Path name) inside AutoCAD. Please note that we aren't concerned with the "Reference Name" inside the "Xref Manager" dialog box. We are only concerned with the name of the XREFs as they appear in the "Saved Path" part of the "Xref Manager" dialog box. I think this is going to be very difficult, if not impossible. But if there are any AutoLISP geniuses out there, perhaps you may know a way to do this.

    DB:2.68:Re: Renaming Xref Drawings 9c

You can easily change the Xref path using the Expresstools command REDIR (in conjunction with REDIRMODE). My problem was that we need to RENAME lots fo Xref files that have already been overlayed onto many drawings. And we need to do this in BATCH mode (automatically and many drawings at a time). I think T. Willey may have solved our problem. We're still testing...

DB:2.68:Betreff: Problem Listing Unresolved Xrefs 7m

I'm trying to get a list of unresolved xrefs in a drawing, or even just to tell if there *are* unresolved ones - but I seem to be unable to get it working. I know the drawing sample I have (I cannot attach, requires our full DBX / ARX and has customer proprietary information) *does* have three unresolved xrefs, as shown by this image resulting fromthe XREF command:

Those paths don't exist on my machine, hence why they are unresolved. Clearly there is something still in the drawing, otherwise XREF wouldn't know about them (block table record ID, possibly?).

So I'm trying to use AcDbXRefGraph to determine if there are unresolved, or towalk nested xrefs and see if they are unresolved, but it just doesn't return anything I expected:

    AcDbXrefGraph XRefGraph ;
    if (acedGetCurDwgXrefGraph(XRefGraph, Adesk::kTrue) // Include ghosts (unresolved).
    == Acad::eOk)
    {
    if (XRefGraph.markUnresolvedTrees() ) // Doesn't return Adesk::kTrue as expected.
    {
    int x = 0 ; // Breakpoint.

    }

    AcDbXrefGraphNode *pRoot = dynamic_castAcDbXrefGraphNode *(XRefGraph.rootNode() ); // Node for this drawing.
    if (pRoot != NULL)
    {
AcDb::XrefStatus rootXRS = pRoot-xrefStatus(); // Resolved, as expected for this drawing.

int iNumXRefs = pRoot-numOut(); // This should be what this node refers to - returns 0, expected 3.
    for (int iXRefIndex = 0 ; iXRefIndex iNumXRefs ; iXRefIndex++)
    {
    AcDbXrefGraphNode *pChild = dynamic_castAcDbXrefGraphNode *(pRoot-out(iXRefIndex) );
    if (pChild != NULL)
    {
    AcDb::XrefStatus xrs = pChild-xrefStatus();
    int x = 0 ;

    }

    }

iNumXRefs = pRoot-numIn(); // This returns 0 also, not unexpected.
    for (int iXRefIndex = 0 ; iXRefIndex iNumXRefs ; iXRefIndex++)
    {
    AcDbXrefGraphNode *pChild = dynamic_castAcDbXrefGraphNode *(pRoot-in(iXRefIndex) );
    if (pChild != NULL)
    {
    AcDb::XrefStatus xrs = pChild-xrefStatus();
    int x = 0 ;

    }

    }

    }

    }

markUnresolvedTrees() doesn't returnAdesk::kTrue, when I feel it should for the situation shown above, and numOuts() on the root returns 0 when surely it should return 3?

Am I doing this wrong? Can anyone suggest another way to determine if there are unresolved xrefs - maybe some way of walking block table records?

(My reason for needing to know this is that we have someAcDbBlockReference objects of our own, perfectly valid and from DWG files on the local machine, and if you try to use AutoCAD's COPY on them while these unresolved xrefs are there, it crashes AutoCAD fatally - doesn't even break in debug. Detach the xrefs, save the drawing and reload (just detaching them is not enough, so it must leave a remnant in the drawing or something), and the COPY works just fine. I can only suspect it's an issue with block table records but the crash happens outside of any of our code (somewhere between beginDeepCloneXlation() and endDeepClone() ), so once again I'm left trying to work around it.)

Unfortunately as mentioned above, none of the blocks had theisFromExternalReference() flag set,so that cross-referencing won't help. The problem has been escalated to AutoDesk so let's see what they say... if they can be bothered to reply. They have not bothered to reply to my AModeler::ErrorCode request even when I asked for a status update on the case.

Specifically, if I have a file open in ACAD for Mac on my machine and someone else using ACAD for Windows tries to open up a file that references the file I have open, that xref will not display on their screen. If I close the file and they re-open the file that references the file I just closed, it shows up just fine. It does the same thing in the opposite direction as well - if I try to open a file that contains an xref opened on a Windows machine, it won't show up either. If I try to directly open up another file that someone else has open, I do receive the appropriate read-only dialog window. We're using a MacMini Server w/ OS X 10.6 Server and running Windows with the newest version of Parallels if that makes any difference. Thanks!

This has been a problem since the introduction of external references into AutoCAD. If you have xrefs in drawing A then insert drawing A as a block into drawing B the xrefs are included as nested blocks.

    1. Why are the xrefs treated this way? I have personally never come across a situation where I would want them as nested blocks or have ever heard of anyone that did.
    2. Is there any easier way to keep these xrefs from being inserted as nested blocks other than to open drawing A, detach the xrefs, save drawing A, insert drawing A as a block into drawing B, undo back to before the xref detach in drawing A, then saving both?

It would seem that there should at least be an option not to include them when you insert the related drawing as a block.

    Thanks

    DB:2.64:Re: 17

This is in response to a querry on AutoDesk's site. Actually, it's more of an addition than a response. It concerns inserting a drawing as a block that is referencing another drawing. Here's my problem, simplified w/ an example. We have a title block we use with each project. Certain attributes are static while others are dynamic (static meaning they are uniform throughout the project). For example, the total number of pages is uniform throughout the project. If a new sheet is added, we change the 'total number of pages' in the referenced drawing (drawing "A") and all the files are updated automatically. The sheet number is unique to each sheet. I've historaically blocked this drawing in with editable attributes (drawing "B"). I would like drawing "B" to refence drawng "A" and insert it as a block to each individual drawing (drawinc "C") for ease convenience. Is there a routine that automatically pulls the external refence "A" into drawing "C" while keeping "B" as a block?

i know that mirrtext affects text in modelspace and attributes in blocks. but what can be done to mirror text within an xref? any of you programmers out there ever tackled this one?

DB:2.62:Re: I Need A Solution For Mirroring Text Within Xrefs mp

It's a fascinating challenge, and I can see your motivation to automate it.

We have hundreds of plans as well, but we don't do options to them, probably
for simplicity. For instance if there's a brick veneer version of a lap
siding design, that's a different plan for us. But we do left vs right hand,
and crawlspace vs basement variants of each, so we have 4 sets to modify if
a correction needs to be made.

As I said, parts of the mirroring process are no-brainers (flip the
elevations, change "left" to "right," etc.) but parts entail judgement and a
human eye. And it's generally dumb stuff, like the dimension text is now on
the opposite side of the line, so it conflicts with something when it didn't
before. And the text justification is opposite to what it was, relative to
the plan, so same problem, a note doesn't fit where it did before. We have
to hand tweak all these things. Sometimes, oddly enough, it's hard to fit
the same four elevations on a sheet after they're mirrored. It would be
fabulous if you could come up with a way to address those things.

Maybe put a wipeout under every annotation?? But then you might risk
obscuring information. I'd guess that you might need to reassess the whole
way you draw to make things always work.

I'd really like to know what you come up with.

thanks for the lengthy post. my office supports a home manufacturer.
therefore our cd's are reused and updated constantly. we have hundreds of
sets that are in effect living documents. also of note is that these sets
include a dozen or so options as well. so a house set for us is not 20
sheets; it is more like 100 sheets.

the new NJ code requires plans to be drawn with correct orientation (ie.
not reverse.); don't know yet about the need for elevations and details
(good point - might not be as bad as i originally thought).

So in effect i now need to double my number of sets. In your office a CADD
Tech may be able to reverse plans in 3 hours; but in my office this takes 2
days. And here is the kicker - any time in the future a change is made now
it would have to be made in TWO places. remember my cd's get worked on
    constantly - for years.

I definitely see my situation as a prime candidate to benefit from
developing a solution for this. in fact I think i will post to the

Is there any way to create an office-wide template that will reference

I guess what I'm looking for is a combination of hard-pathing and
relative pathing--ie, not ..\..\xref.dwg which specifies an explicit

C:\MyProject\xref.dwg because this won't change per project if it is
hard-coded in the template... But something more like
    %PROJECTDIR%\xref.dwg

I could eliminate the path altogether, but then there is never any
guarantee that the correct project-specific file will *always* be loaded...

The XPATH arx utility functions fairly well... a good way to repath XREFs
without actually opening the files. However, there are a few problems:

    1. If a directory path is manually typed in rather than using the browse
buttons, the path is not "qualified" as existing. I suppose it could be
argued that this is a "feature", allowing repathing to some known
destination path that's not on your system, but it seems more likely that
users would want to repath XREFs to new locations on their own system.

    2. If a drawing is open, and you "collect" a list of drawings, a message
appears (not a warning) at the command line that it is open. However, if
you try to apply XREF path changes while a file is open, a variety of
undesirable results occured... the worst being freeze up.

    3. If trying to "collect" a drawing list when pointing to a sizeable
subdirectory tree, it seems to lock up and never finishes. I suspect its
getting stuck in an endless loop, but I'm only guessing. On smaller
subdirectory trees, it works. After just writing some code in AK2000 using
Doslib to do some similar "drawing list gathering", I too got stuck in some
endless loops until I debugged the conditions (now its "sweet" :-)

    4. Unfortunately, if relative XREF paths were used in the drawing (example:
..\..\plans\plan1.dwg), this utility can't interpret them and they all show
up as yellow icons incorrectly (designating the XREF is not loaded), when in
fact the XREFs are found whwn I open the "host" drawing. These
relative-path XREFs are found and listed by XPATH, just incorrectly
    identified as "not loaded".

    5. The utility fails to account for the fact the internal XREF "symbol"
name can be different than the actual name XREF name. It appears that the
XREF name that is listed under the "Xref Name" column is simple parsed from
the full XREF+PATH name. I tested this by changing the name of an XREF
internally, yet leaving it point to the same fullpath XREF on my system, but
XPATH fails to use the actual XREF Symbol name. Mr. Dave Lewis brought this
to my attention with my XRP utility, and I have accomodated the situation.
It seems that if longfilenames are used for XREFs and it meets AutoCAD's
internal XREF name limit when attaching an XREF, it'll prompt to rename the
XREF symbol name to something shorter. Since AutoCAD allows this, it should
be accounted for in the XPATH utility.

    6. The interface is a little confusing at first, but otherwise it works ok
given the constraints and omissions mentioned above.

There appears to be no checking for actual path syntax, which I'm sure
you'll agree follows a few simple rules. When I type in: ..//.. the
    change appears as ../..\
When I type in abc:...... the change appears as c:......\
Why would anyone type in such nonsense you ask? Because people will do it
if allowed, from shear carelessness or from not having a clue what they're
doing. In any of the examples above, the drawing locks up autocad when
trying to load a drawing with such invalid paths. The lack of valid path
checking makes it much too dangerous a tool to use in a multi-user
    environment, in my opinion.

Actually there is a bunch of checking for invalid syntax, however it
does appear that I have allowed some things through that I shouldn't.
I can't reproduce what you're describing with lockups but I have seen
some odd behavior. I tighten things up a bit.

There is a problem with the display, which I just verified. If one (1)
drawing is open, the message stating that the file is in use DOES NOT APPEAR
UNTIL THE XPATH DIALOG BOX IS TERMINATED. Then I opened two drawings in a
folder, and ran XPATH again... 1 message appeared stating that 1 file was
open. The message about the 2nd file being open doesn't appear until AFTER
the XPATH dialog box is closed. Seems that the prompt sequence for these
messages is just in the wrong place... always 1 prompt behind. Initially
when this happened, I wondered why a particular drawing and its XREFs were
not reported... it was because the "in use" message appears too late...
    after using the XPATH command.

I believe this has to do with AutoCAD and the way the messages get
flushed out to the screen. I'll look into it.

Noted... the ability for it to recognize or "confirm the location" of
relative XREF paths seems to be an important if not intrinsic component of
XREF pathing. With the advent of Images in R14, it would make sense for
    Images to be similarly handled.

A future version will also handles images and fonts.

    7. When creating a Report, the default report name is "*.txt" which seems
odd. I recommend either supplying an actual default name (dwgname.txt?) or
leave the field blank. Just below it is the "Save as Type" field which is
filled in with "text files *.txt" , which is fine, making the default
report name "*.txt" not only unworkable but redundant.

    Understood.

    8. If someone opens a drawing AFTER using XPATH to generate an XREF
listing, then a path change is attempted, XPATH will crash and burn with a
fatal error, because it apparently does not recheck "file open status"
before attempting to apply the path changes.

Yes, this is a bug. XPath is not checking AGAIN. This will be fixed.

    Ian,

Good point, I just made a minor change to your code to string both the
    xref
name (in the Dwg) and the hard coded path to one line. Also, by setting
"TBLNEXT" to "T" you effectively "rewind the tape" so to speak, thereby,
ensuring that your program starts with the first instance of the
    particular
entity type specified by "TBLNEXT". Test it out by starting a new
    drawing
and inserting either a block or attaching an xref.

    Mark,
Your code skips over the first block in the database.
Also the name of the Xref does not necessarily have
the same name as the Dwg file referenced.
i.e. the Xref called "MYXREF" could be referenced to
e.g. C:\JOB\XYZ.DWG. (You can also have several
Xref names referring to one Dwg file.)
Minor mods give the following (not tested),
which writes the file in the format:
    Xref_1
    Xref_1-path
    Xref_2
    Xref_2-path
    .....

DB:2.60:Re: Clipped Xrefs - Autocad .Dwg Exporter - Print To Dwg - Dwfx Export a8

    Hello,

Ok I know, what the! But I wish I had a dwg to dwg printer!

My issue is that I have a whole bunch of drawings which have been created in many complex ways including clipping of xrefs. I need to link and display these drawings in my Revit Model. Trouble is Revit treats the clipped blocks and xrefs as un-clipped. I cannot explode the xrefs as this also expands the clipped block.

My method which i have been forced to use is to export each drawing to a dwfx file and then use a dwf to dwg converted to go back to dwg.

This is really time consuming and the end result is not that great.

It sounds really stupid however if I had a export from dwg to dwg printer then it would save me some steps.

I tried saving to dxf without luck.

Exploding and trimming lines around the clip boundary would take too long.

Linked dwfx files into AutoCAD files do not show in Revit.

Does anyone have any other ideas or methods to suggest?

    Kind Regards

    David

Wblock only gets the object native to the file, not the Xref stuff.

I have Xrefed my existing base file into a sheet file (file where i deimnsion and note), Xrefed the new base file over it (i.e. two xrefs). In the sheet the Xrefs do not cleanup walls between each other. However, In each respective base file walls clean up (i.e. new walls cleanup over the existing base file xref within the new base file). I have the wall cleanup group definition under Style Manager set to cleanup walls between host and xref. What Im wondering is if this does not work between two xrefs, only objects in the base file and an xref? Not sure what Im missing. Any assistance would be great. Thanks!

DB:2.60:Re: Wall Cleanup Between Xref's pa

Sorry for taking long to reply. Attached please find images and modified dwg for your reference. I turn off the hatch and turn on the wall justification line display here for clarity. Note that in original files I received, not all the joints currently have wall merge applied (see NEW-FP-THIRD_turnOnJustificationDisplay.png)
This might be one reason why this joint appears to have a cleanup failure.

The joint here is a bit tricky because I cannot use Cleanup Radius adjustment alone to fix the Cleanup issue, so besides using wall merge the wall cleanup joint can be handled by editing justification, if keeping justification edge on specific side is not critical, I made an example in attached DWG. The upper right joint is done by using Edit Justification Line command (select a wall--Right Click--Edit Justification. Note that in ACA 2008 you will need to hold CTRL key while clicking the Edit Justification grip to keep the wall position from changing) .

Please let me know if this clarifies and let me know if there are other questions.
    Thanks,
    Sam

Yes, up-to-date on everything. I just opened up another dwg and used the etransmit command and it worked so it must be something with this particular dwg that won't allow me to use etransmit. I didn't originate the dwg. I'm just learning this command so I'll get the hang of it soon. Thanks..

Using overlayed xrefs would definitely solve the problem, and a reactor to

    Steve,
Hello. You may misunderstand what reactors can and can't do. 1) Reactor
    callbacks can not be "interactive".
IOW, they can't give users choices to decide.
    2) Reactor commands can't interfere with commands
in progress. The state of AutoCAD is an unknown during
a callback. Some commands, however, can be reversed after the fact by
    using
    command reactors.

What kinds of troubles are you having with unloaded with unloaded nested
xref's? Could they be solved by using overlayed nested xrefs rather than
    attached nested xref's?

Reactors could be used to write to a file reporting information about the
xref's at the time of closing the file.

A command could be written to better manage the binding process. That
command could determine which xref's are unloaded and make the binding
    process smoother.

You might also benefit from Adesk's xref manager which provides a good
picture over an entire directory/project the relationships between xref's.

    SUMMARY:
It seems that there is an inherent contradiction between XREFS and VISRETAIN and LAYER STATES for PLOT SHEETS. Has anyone found a satisfying and timesaving way to work with these various animals productively?

    DESCRIPTION:
I have PLOT SHEETS that contain XREFS from WORKING DRAWINGS. I set up a WORKING DRAWING for Elevations in which I WBLOCK out the N,S, E and W Elevations which will then be XREFFED into the plot sheets. As I finish the ELEVATION I block it out and then it shows up in my plot sheet.

    QUESTION:
If I have VISRETAIN ON in the PLOT SHEET then the additional changes in
LINEWEIGHT,LINETYPE, NEW LAYERS etc which I make in my WBLOCK (i.e. the XREFS) do not show up in the PLOT SHEET. I have to change VISRETAIN to OFF, allow the PLOT SHEET to accept the changes, then try and get back to the layer state that I had originally (this is very tedious) in order for my lineweight, linetype etc changes to show up in the plot sheets. Layer manager does not seem to want to retain a layer state after turning visretain off for some reason.

If anyone has a nice workaround for this please e-mail me if possible to chertok22@hotmail.com. Thanks.

    DB:2.60:Re: 7c

    Jon,

Ok, Now I understad. Well, my suggestion is this: leave Visretain alone
and use the Layer Manager (LMAN command) to change to different display of
colors in the Plot Sheet. That will simplify your work, because you don't
have to change properties (color, linetype, etc,) in the Working drawing nor
in the Wblock drawing, to have the Plot Sheet display different colors.
Using the layer manager you will handle this LOCALLY in the Plot Sheet
    drawing. How does it sound?

Just make sure the SORTENTS variable is set to 127. That allows the draworder saved in the original drawing to show in the x-ref.

We have some "rogue" cad users who like to do things "their way", and I would like them to do things the "company's way". Any input will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

We are having a problem opening some drawings. It is hard to be sure if it
is certain drawings or if it happens randomly, but here is what happens:

When opening the drawing the text window shows that the Xrefs are resolved,
then the AutoCad Express menu loads, then we get:

    1302 selected
Do you really want to do this?

If we respond with "N", then it says:
    Everything has been undone.

    But the message
Do you really want to do this?
repeats and we respond "N" again
and the whole process repeats another 5 or six times.

Finally, the _Help command is executed.
Closing Help will usually get us to the command prompt, but
    shortly thereafter we get
Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0xffffff Exception at 654448a0h

Any ideas at all? Thanks, Mark

    Hello,

OK I have seen this before but I can not recall what the issue was. I have
one of our computers asking on certain files Do you really want to do this?
over and over when you open up the file. It is entirely possible it is a
setting in the options as the computer is from a user that was rather well
known for unique options settings. I can just do a clean install and get it
back to normal if there is not an easy answer.

The computer seems to be having a lot of fatal errors and corrupt files, not
sure if that is related or not.

    Thanks,

Can someone please explain to me their method for ARCHIVING and/or EMAILING drawings to consultants? I get to the end of a drawing set and I'd like to send the PLOT SHEETS (including XREFS et. al.) to a consultant - but I know that these drawings are going to change. I'd also like to set up an archiving procedure for these drawings for when I get to the end of the project.

    1. Is there a way to get all the PLOT SHEET information together in order to send via email and allow the XREFS to update? Or do I need to go through a "BIND" Xrefs or a "PAK N GO" Procedure each and every time I send out an updated drawing? 2. Should a BIND XREFS Procedure be executed before moving all the project information to a CDROM (or other archive method) and does this operation end any XREF utility - - and how is this BIND different from say "insert".
If possible please also reply to chertok22@hotmail.com

    DB:2.59:Re: af

Our use of hard paths for xrefs goes back to the old days where we
inserted floor plans as blocks in our mechanical drawings with the
(really old "sneaker net"). The current floor plan drawing was on a
floppy disk and everyone would copy it onto their station for use. Then
we got into networks and simply inserted the floor plan from the server.
With the advent of xrefs, we simply carried over the use of paths with
    the xref.

The way we work, we have a facility sub-directory which contains all the
current mechanical design drawings, architectural xrefs, structural
xrefs and electrical xrefs. We then have "dated sub-directories where we
store the up-dated drawings we get from Architects, structural engineers
and electrical engineers. Then we have "project sub-directories" where
we have our plot drawings which xref the same floor plans as the design
drawings as well as xrefs of the mechanical drawings. The reason for the
"project sub-directories" is that we usually have more than one project
on the same facility (at different times though) and even though the
project may be a small one room renovation, we always use the complete
building as the base. In the old days of hand drafting, you would always
just draw enough of the building to show the new work which after a
number of years of renovations, resulted in umpteen different drawings
of the same building but different areas. When we first started with
Cad, Architects kept doing renovations this way but as we usually needed
to show all of a mechanical system that was being changed, we quickly
came to realize that we should be designing with the complete building
in the drawing even though we would only plot out smaller portions of
it. It also meant that we wouldn't have to search through a bunch of
different drawings to find what we want. I am still trying to convince
others that we should move all the project information (hard copy)on a
facility to one location so that we would only have to look in one place
    for any previous information.

Anyway, now for the plot drawings, we create the first one, attach xrefs
with paths, do a saveas for the next plot drawing, change the plumbing
xref name to hvac xref name and change the path to the hvac xref
drawing. The plumbing xref name is "1APHNPDA" and the xref drawing is
2345A1PA.dwg while the hvac xref name is 1AVHNDDA and the xref drawing
is 2345A1VA.dwg. The xref manager allows you to edit an xref path
directly in the dialogue box where it shows the loaded path. We just
have to change the one letter "P" to a "V".

The other reason for xref paths is the ability of AutoCAD and computers
to create copies of drawings all over the place. We have always used
unique names in file names so that we would always be sure of the
correct file being used and the xref paths always assure us of the
    correct drawing being xreffed.

Dave, your information is really helpful. It appears that etransmit is

reference to "hard paths" versus "relative paths" and it seems you use
hard paths, which is somewhat different from "conventional" use. I
really leverage XREFS to the max (tried some 3D with it as well) and
it would be great if you could just drop some knowledge on me about
hard paths, relative paths etcetera and how you are using them vs

I've got a Construct file with a series of Slabs and Walls that "fold" up the building (sort of like a ribbon wrapping around up, around and through the building). In the Construct I've got the Display set to show the different slabs as outlines or hidden lines depending on what floor you're on (by moving the entire model up or down in the Z axis I'm able to see what I expect). But when I Xref the file into an upper floor (drag-n-drop from PN) it still displays as though it's on the first floor. If I just copy/paste the slabs into the floor at the correct Z it displays correctly. Is there something I'm missing with Slab display?

I have a plan drawing with multiple xref attachments. When i audit this

If i detach the xrefs and audit i get zero errors.
If i open each of the drawings xrefed into it and audit i get zero
    errors
The errors only occur with the xrefs but everthing by its self is clean
If i work on this drawing for any length of time i will crash

To make matters more complex, all of these drawing were at one time
corrupt (we had a bad computer that corrupted files) but thought i
fixed them by copying and pasting the information into new drawings. it
seemed to do the trick, but now i have all these problems with the

    DB:2.59:Re: 7c

I believe AutoCAD has a problem if you add hatching to a drawing using
    objects
buried within an xref as it's boundary.
Do you get such as errors as...?
1243 objects selected... "do you wish to do this" or some such errors.
if this is the case then redo all your hatches. but this time
draw a closed polyline and select this for your boundary object to hatch
    within.
This should clean up the drawing.

These same drawings are under half a meg and have little or no ADT
objects. The speed in paperspace is dog slow. Hatch objects seem to be
the problem. This may not be a Desktop issue ...just Acad. Get rid of

I am wanting to know how CAD mangagers are applying drawing legends to
xrefs. I am currently creating a legend in the source drawings and then
using a viewport in the master drawing layouts to show the legend, so that
the legend reflects any changes to the xref layer definitions in the master
drawing. The problem arises when layers in the XREF are toggled off in the
master drawing. This leaves "blanks" in the XREF legend. Also, there are
problems when the linetype in the legend of the source drawing does not
display properly due to linetype scaling.

The application is Civil Design, with a minimum of a Base (Topo) drawing,
Design drawing, and Plat drawing xref'd into the plan sheets. Each drawing
    has it's own legend.

Using -xref path allows you to repath xrefs. Of course the changes to
nested xrefs won't stick if you save and reopen, however you can now reload
the unloaded xref with no changes to your drawing since it's empty, then
    bind it.

I have installed the new Design Review 2008 along with True Convert 2008

When I use the import option in Design Review to import a DWG to a DWF, the DWF does not bring across any xrefs

If I open the drawing in True View the xrefs load and if I publish or print this drawing to DWF everything works fine

But ideally I would love to be able to use the import option from within Design Review and get the entire drawing

Anyone know how to acheive this?

DB:2.58:Re: Import Dwg Into Design Review 31

Scott Sheppard - Autodesk said the following On 6/5/2007 11:43 AM:
Are your XREFs on a network drive? How are the files referenced in the
parent DWG. Clearly we have a problem where XREFs are not being found.
There's a jillion ways for AutoCAD to locate XREFs - including things like
the project variable. SO which way are you using?

    No PROJECT variable involved.

Both the parent file and it's xrefs are located in a network location.
    \\server\Public_Works\05705600-Smith Road

In this case, one xref was saved in the parent drawing with NO PATH.
The other one was saved with a FULL PATH. Of course, both still point to
the same directory (\\server\Public_Works\05705600-Smith Road), and that
is where the xrefs are found, when you open the drawing in AutoCAD or
TrueView. (In TrueView, you can view the "found" location of all the
xrefs on the command line as the file loads)

BTW: I used "FileMon" to log file activity during the Design Review
import process and can verify that "DWGVIEWR.exe" is finding the
    referenced files.

When you go to retrieve a drawing from the CD, set

DB:2.58:Re: Convert Xrefs From Attach To Overlay? af

Here's another thought. Maybe you could loop thru the xrefs and make an
array of xref names and paths, then make a LayerState based on the current
conditions. Then detach all the xrefs, and loop thru the array attaching
Xrefs as overlays, the apply and delete the LayerState. Kludgy, but might
work, assuming you can create, apply and delete a LayerState with Lisp.

I've got a drawing in model space. I have a couple of viewports of different scales of that model in paperspace (1x and 10x). If I use CHSPACE on the 1x viewport and change the modelspace to paperspace I lose the view in the 10x viewport, and vice versa. If I have a revision to my model, I'd like to keep the paperspace "as is" to show the history of the revisions. The catch is that I can only have (1) die drawing in modelspace so I can xref it into other drawings. Can I somehow "bind" the viewports so that all viewports in paperspace retain their appearence?

I can export into modelspace then copy into paperspace and problem solved!

    3. I can't

    Answer: see 1 above. I
actually thought I had a clever answer to this one. Create the schedule in
modelspace then use the Express tools CHSPACE command to move it to
paperspace, but all this weird stuff comes with. It's on the A-DOOR layer so
if you freeze it, you lose your doors in modelspace. However, you can change
these objects (what ARE they Autodesk??) to a different layer then freeze or
turn off that layer. To update, you have to transfer everything back to
    modelspace.

Yeah, it's really lame. I know it's easy for us
out here to say "Why doesn't Autodesk hire people with real world experience",
but in fact many of the great programmers are from the world of practicing
architects. This stuff is probably pretty tricky to program. However, the old
Details module allows you to annotate xref objects with xdata on it, so I know
these guys can do it! You could place it in the Wishlist newsgroup, but
Autodesk already knows they need to make this work....soon.

Of course, my answers could be entirely wrong, so
I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Sometimes when you zoom way in on something you can only see one entity

We do Mechanical and Electrical design / engineering / drafting here. And the only thing we xref is our TB on Layer TB (of all things) and in PS. Why avoid Layer 0? Well really just to have the ability to individually freeze and thaw whenever desired.

We are hoping that we don't have to manually reoverlay/reattach every Xref file after renaming the Xref files in Windows Explore.

    Rudy,

How would you get the path of an xref through object dbx? When I dumped
one this is all I got:
    Command: (vlax-dump-object tm1)
; IAcadBlock: A block definition containing a name and a set of objects
    ; Property values:
; Application (RO) = Exception occurred
    ; Count (RO) = 0
    ; Document (RO) = #
    ; Handle (RO) = "D5D"
    ; HasExtensionDictionary (RO) = 0
    ; IsLayout (RO) = 0
    ; IsXRef (RO) = -1
; Layout (RO) = AutoCAD.Application: The property is not available in
    current
    state
    ; Name = "X-ALIGN-HORZ (SITE20)"
    ; ObjectID (RO) = 2130237736
    ; ObjectName (RO) = "AcDbBlockTableRecord"
    ; Origin = (233.813 179.875 0.0)
    ; OwnerID (RO) = 2130219544
    ; XRefDatabase (RO) = AutoCAD.Application: No database
    T

    I didn't see anything about a path. How I got "tm1", I searched through
the block list, found one that was and xref and asigned that vla-object to
    tm1.

    Any help is again appreciated.

Are there any draw backs to copying xrefs in a drawing file with plain

I'm trying to clip an xref in different places for enlarge plans and it
seems an easy way is to copy the xref. (r14.01).

After reloading xrefs that I know have changed (and were saved) I get a message saying "No changed xrefs found". If I close the drawing containing the xref and open it again the changes to the xref are visible. I have used AutoCAD for many years and never really understood why/how this works. Any help would be appreciated.

I know there is a command to "reload" the current drawing but can't remember what it is. Does anybody know what the command is ? I am hoping that I can just issue the command and have the drawing closed, opened then the changes to the xref will appear.

    TIA

DB:2.52:Re: Reload Drawing To Update Xrefs ca

No that is not the issue either. Example: I have both drawings open. I move a line in the xref drawing then save. Without closing the xref drawing I switch to the other drawing (only one autocad session running). I right click "Manage Xrefs" then select "Reload DWG Xrefs" then it reports that there are no changes. Even after issuing a regen the lines location remains and does not update. As long as I can remember from 2007 up to 2009 (same pc) it has always worked this way for me. I am running C3D 2009 with Raster Design.

I did find the command I had been looking for, from the express tools REVERT. After saving then issuing the revert command, the drawing closes then reopens (same as save then open just quicker). This "refreshes" the drawing and the changes made in the xref appear.

How would i reload all xrefs that are currently loaded? Frequently we

reloads the ones that are unloaded. I want to skip the ones that are

You've got it in one Rob. Looks like the slow way again.

Either that or redefine the HATCH command, to include a routine running straight after the hatch is created turning to non-associative.

I take it (using LISP) that would be using the ENTLAST function? Though i have seen somewhere that using LISP to amend dxf settings is a bit dodgy in that the codes can change between versions, with grief the end result. Is ActiveX combine with LISP a safer route to take?

The reason im asking is it might be faster for me to write the routine and slip it into out office custom .mnl file than to have to try and explain the problem to the other 80 people i work with, and then teach them the various ways around it.

Here's the problem. I'm working on some sheets that are about 4K, that have
about 3.5M xreffed into them (4 seperate xrefs-3 in ms, 1 in ps. Only 1
layout). I have one of the xrefs and about 3 of the sheets open. Not every
time, but sometimes when I regen in layout, Acad freezes on me. It says
it's regenerating, but never finishes. Sometimes it happens when I
regenall. Does anyone know if this could be caused by lack of horsepower or
memory? It seems that the problem is occuring because I have too much open.
I can usually work with one of the sheets and one of the xrefs at a time
without problems, but once I open more than that I'm having this problem.
    Any ideas would help.

    No, never.

Think about dates, stamps, submittals, etc. Or do you put that stuff on all sheets and change it dozens of times?

Do you re-issue ALL the sheets on the entire project for a revision to one?

Why are my interference conditions broken when I xref them into other views.

I have an interference condition between two constructs and when I create a view with the two constructs in the conditions are broken.

I'm trying to create a section. What's the point of interference conditions if they don't work properly across xrefs?

DB:2.51:Re: Interference Conditions Thru Xrefs 73

Just tried it, good idea though, but ADT complains of circular references, I attached them anyway and it still failled to work.

This is kind of hard to explain, and it just started happening a week or so ago. On certain plan drawings with a baseplan xrefed into model space, when I open the drawing with the default view in paperspace, Autocad loads multiple copies of the xref into paperspace. These copies aren't xrefs, but individual entities. It then asks "Do you really want to do this?" many times. If I ctrl-c enough, it finally exits, but if I try to zoom it goes through this same routine. I have been able to delete these mutiple copies, but the next time the drawing is opened, the same thing happens. If I audit, no errors show, nor if I try and recover the drawing. At first I thought it had something to do with a door schedule that was in the xref because it kept saying something like "Could not automatically add object to schedule". I think this was only showing up because of the mutiple copies. Once I deleted the schedule, I no longer got that error, but it still creates multiple drawings. Also, if I play around in these drawings enough for Autocad to have a fatal error and exit, and then open the drawing back up immediately, the drawing seems fine.

So far this has happened to 2 different drawings, in 2 different projects, with 2 different xrefs. I think it is drawing based since this happens exactly the same on 3 different computers, but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas? These are critical drawings and I can't fix them! Thanks.

At http://discussion.autodesk.com/ you can search the newsgroups

matching the text you provide in the search box.

For the search engine limited to the ADT groups, go to

Autodesk server search engine you will be searching all available
messages not just those on your local newsgroup cache.

Put in the specific words as the search words and chose All for
the time length of the search. Clicking on an individual topic
listed in the search findings will spread out the messages in
that topic in a tree formation. The topics are listed by date
with the newest date at the top.

Hey guys, All that was exactly what I tried in the first instance, with 2008
xref manager tends to lie a little I have noticed and so switched back to
classicxref, when trying to remove xref was told it could not be removed as
there are multiples of it, which, quite frankly wasn't true, drawing was
purged and audited, tried all the usual tricks, removed unused layouts and
all sorts of things, it is the only xref in the drawing and when using quick
select and everything AC just keeps telling me that there is only one xref
in the drawing.... Heres where it gets weirder though, since I had failed to
remove the xref and only needed the other info in the drawing I opted for
just unloading the xref and copying the rest into a new blank drawing....
but low and behold the xref came with it! So at this stage I am completely
baffled... Help would be greatfully appreciated...

Your printer is running out of memory. Try this test on HP Plotters. Run another plot, but this time adjust the printer properties so that it process "in computer", not "in printer". This will slow down the plot, but will reveal whether or not you are running out of memory.
