I'm searching for complete definitions of the collations SQL_Scandinavian_Pref_Cp850_CI_AS, andSQL_SwedishStd_Pref_Cp1_CI_ASBackground:We have until now used the first collation (SQL_Scandinavian_Pref_Cp850_CI_AS) as default, but encountered problems with it regarding the treatment of the letters 'v' and 'w'. When inserting sample names in a column that requires unique names, the two names 'TV_063' and 'TW_063' are regarded as the same. I now want to change to the second collation (SQL_SwedishStd_Pref_Cp1_CI_AS) which seems alright, but I would very much like a complete documentation of it. Anyone who knows where to find it?Thank you

Did you consider using Windows collation instead. They are considered more modern compared to the SQL collations. For instance Finnish_Swedish_CI_AI.Tibor Karaszi

Hi, Earlier today I was having a problem where I had a dimension deployed onto two seemingly identical environments (same server config, same data, same SSAS objects) yet on one environment the dimension could be processed successfully but on the other it couldn't. the error we got was the familiar attribute key could not be found. After much investigation we eventually found the problem. The collation of the dimension was different on each environment. The only way to discover this was to script out the dimension from both environments and compare the .xmla scripts for differences. This is what we saw: On the environment where processing was failing:
    Language1033/Language
    CollationLatin1_General_CS_AS/Collation
On the environment where processing succeeded:
    Language1033/Language
    CollationLatin1_General_CI_AS/Collation
We executed the script from the working on environment on the other environment and everything then worked OK. What I now want to know is...WHY?????? I took a look at the definition of my dimension in BIDS and the collation is defined as Latin1_General and [Case Sensitive] box is *not* checked however I believe that is simpy the default because if I look at the .dim file for this dimension there is no Collation element in there. So, why did my dimension get deployed with a case-sensitive collation? Under what circumstance can the collation be changed during deployment? Any advice much appreciated. thanks Jamie http://sqlblog.com/blogs/jamie_thomson/ | @jamiet | About me

    DB:3.34:Dimension Collations 9s

OK. The latest. I have an .xmla script that creates a new database containing only 1 dimension. No cubes, no DSVs, not even a data source; it only has 1 dimension in it. The script executes successfully on both servers. If I script out the created dimension using SSMS then on one server it has a collation of Latin1_General_CI_AS, on the other it is Latin1_General_CS_AS. The *only* difference I can find is that one one server the file version number of msmdsrv.exe is 10.0.2746.0, on the other it is 10.0.2531.0. I'm assuming that they are on a different cumulative update and I'm trying to get hold of our DBA to find out if that is indeed the case - he conveniently seems to have gone AWOL. Will report back when I know more! -Jamiehttp://sqlblog.com/blogs/jamie_thomson/ | @jamiet | About me

Below is a summary of an issue Ive encountered with SCSM Sp1 Beta \ SQL 2012 install, any thoughts much appeciated!
SQL 2012 Instance 1: Has the SCSM Management Server database installed
SQL 2012 Instance 2: Looking to deploy SCSM Data warehouse Management Servers databases here and the Analysis Services.

Both of the above SQL Instances are on SQL collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.
Both host a number of other application databases.
However when looking to install the SQL Analysis feature to Instance 2, it does not offer SQL Collations, only Windows Collations?
Will selecting a Windows Collation still work, and if not, is there a way round this without changing the existing SQL Instances (they’ve been rebuilt once already for a SCOM Sp1 issue, and also host other applications databases) and without standing up
    an additional SQL Instance?
    Cheers

    SCENARIO

I have VCenter 4.1 (A) installed on a Windows 2008 R2 64bit server for a datacenter and I'm connecting to an external SQL Server 2005 database on a win 2003 server. I configured an ODBC DSN from c:\windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe and it connects OK to the external SQL 2005 database. The version is 2005.90.1399.0.

We have another VCenter 4.1 (B) that was earlier installed on a Windows 2008 R2 64bit server for a different datacenter that connects to a different SQL Server 2005 database on a win 2003 server. A sqlncli_x64.msi was downloaded and installed on the VCenter 4.1 server, when looking at that ODBC DSN, the SQL Native client installed on that server is version 2005.90.3042.00.

    QUESTION1

We are looking at linking both VCenters, do I need to change the SQL Native client version on the VCenter 4.1 (A) server ( 2005.90.1399.0) to match that of VCenter 4.1 (B) server (2005.90.3042.00)?

Is the SQL Native client version 2005.90.1399.0 used by VCenter 4.1 (A) server, the correct version to be used for a VCenter database v4.1, or will it cause problems later on?

    QUESTION 2

Do I need to change the collation of the VCenter database used by VCenter 4.1 (B) server to Latin1_General_CI_AS so it matches the collation of the VCenter database used by VCenter 4.1 (A) server?

I'm using SQL Server 2005. I have a foreign key I'm trying to set up and am running into an error because the two fields have different collations.

Second table = tblKitList and has a PK of ixKitSKU. That field has a collation of Latin1_General_CI_AS.

    What I've tried:
Removed the PK on tblKitList. Changed the collation on ixKitSKU to Latin1_General_CS_AS. The problem is when I turn it back to a PK it reverts to a collation of Latin1_General_CI_AS. The database and both

Not as far as I know (and I tried).

    SQL won't let you.

It pretty much says "can't do this because the collation is different" ... you must use the EXACTLY same collation between your various DB's.

We're working on stuff to make this easier to work around in a mixed environment, but certainly right now, not much you can do. This is down to the DBMS (Database Management System) protesting - little we can do.

Everyone knows that an antivirus definition update has no need to be uninstalled, if it has a bug, the next update will fix it, there is no reason to uninstall it, and no one has the option. The only report we need is see the definition version when we open
the MSSE UI, but not in WU history. And, I have noticed they can't be uninstalled because they don't appear in the Control Panel with the other updates to uninstall, and this is the correct way, then why to insert them in history?.
So, if you want to use WU because it has many advantages (integrated with OS, BITS, etc.) do it but please do in the way it doesn't bother the others.

DB:2.74:Stop Using Windows Update History For Msse Definition Update s9

It's not a little fix, since these updates are actually delivered to the PC via Microsoft updates and so the history logs are completely correct and necessary.
This is how MSE is designed to work, in cooperation with the existing operating system update system. Either accept that this is how it works or move on to another antimalware that doesn't use Microsoft Updates for its updates, since there's virtually no
chance that this is going to change.

DB:2.74:Sqlserver With Japanese Collation Doesnt Support Euro Symbol da

See Miles answer for Japanese collation in the link above, I assume the code page you are using has the same issue.

    Hi,

The euro symbol is not part of japanese codepage 932. When you use char/varchar in a japanese collated database, your strings are encoded in codepage 932. By contrast, nchar/nvarchar strings are always encoded in unicode regardless of the collation.

Your schemas need to use nchar/nvarchar columns if you want to store the euro symbol. In unicode the euro symbol is U20AC.

Codepage 932 can be found at the following links:

These weren't real schema differences; e.g. it wanted to drop a constraint because on the database project it said (NULL) and on the deployed database it said (null).I have checked all the collations: the project and database (project and deployed) collations are all case insensitive.I have tried running the deploy both ignoring and not, the collation.Cheers,Steven

I have a 4.0.24 installation of MySQL (on 10.3.9 server) and I need to update this to at least 4.1.x (5.x preferred).

I have a major concern though... I've never done updates to MySQL, but I have heard horror stories (especially when going from 4.0.x to something newer.

To give a quick rundown, ALL of my databases contain UTF8 (Japanese mostly) and Shift-JIS data held in what is usually the default collations (as 4.0.x didn't fully support UTF8)

I guess my question would be, how can I update AND retain the databases with their content fully intact?

DB:2.73:Need To Upgrade Mysql, But Worried... kx

Yesterday, I managed to find a way to successfully export the utf8 data from the 4.0 installation and import to a 5.0 installation. Below are the steps I took:

On the machine with the 4.0.24 installation:
For each database, I went over each table. For all fields with type (char, varchar, text, mediumtext, longtext) I altered them to their binary equivalents (charbinary, varcharbinary, blob, mediumblob, longblob).
    eg: mysql ALTER TABLE mytable MODIFY myfield BINARY;

I then exported the data, dumping using the HEX option to help retain the data.
    $ mysqldump --opt --user=username --password=** --allow-keywords --flush-logs --hex-blob --maxallowedpacket=16M --quote-names database database.sql

I then ran iconv on the outputed SQL file to complete the utf8 conversion.

    iconv -f latin1 -t UTF-8 database.sql database-utf8.sql

On the other computer, I installed a binary release of MySQL 5.0 (from mysql.org)

I created a database that would be used to house the exported data.

    mysql CREATE DATABASE mydatabase CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8generalci;

Then, transferred over the utf8 version of the dump to the new comp and imported:

    $ mysql -u root -p mydatabase database-utf8.sql

Checked the DB to see if all the data was intact and it was This worked for me, but I don't know if this is a "good" method or not, so take with a grain of salt. As I didn't care about the mysql users, I didn't bother transferring the mysql database itself... I just recreated the mysql users in the 5.0 install as there were only a couple.

Again, not sure if this is the "best" method, but it did work for me. Hopefully someone else can find this useful.

DB:2.73:What Is The Definition Of Key Field Data Field 8d

    hi

    good

    DATA FIELD-

During the Blueprint phase, the functional analysts will determine where the data will go in the SAP system, and how it will be used within the processes. Giant spreadsheets will emerge which ought to include - for each data element required - at least the following:

All SAP data fields within the element will be used - And this means all. It's quite simple ... if the field is not on the spreadsheet, it will not show up in SAP once the system is live. That usually helps focus the effort.

Then, for each field identified, document the field business rules (for example define what a Plant will be in SAP - is it a factory, a part of a factory, a truck etc) and also the field technical rules (for example 10 characters alphanumeric).

The same needs to be completed for the data as it is found in the legacy system(s) so that the real fun activity - mapping - can begin. Mapping is the seemingly simple task of associating a single field in SAP with one or more fields in the legacy systems. Sometimes it will not be a perfect fit in which case you will need to transform the legacy data to get it to fit. Add a few more columns to your spreadsheet and capture:

    Legacy field it maps to

Legacy field business and technical rules

    Any transformation required

Once you have completed this, and still within the Blueprint phase, you need to:

Get it signed off - this is a very big step as data is at the heart of the SAP system

Confirm the exact number and type of automated conversion programmes required

Write high level functional specs for each of these programmes

    KEY FIELD-.

A table in the database in which all records from the pooled tables assigned to the table pool are stored corresponds to a table pool.

The definition of a pool consists essentially of two key fields (Tabname and Varkey) and a long argument field (Vardata). A pool has the following structure:

DB:2.62:Sql Server 2008 Collation Setting And Windows Versions km

I have SQL Server 2008 Developers Edition installed on my Windows 2003 XP 64-bit developer machine.  I wanted to create a database using a Japanese collation.  The data will be stored in NVARCHAR columns, so it will all be in Unicode.  There are several Japanese collations available.  I'm starting to gather that the _100 collations are the ones that a new to SQL Server 2008.  In the Management Studio new database dialog options page, the collation drop down offered all the flavors of Japanese_90, Japanese_Bushu_Kakusu_100, Japanese, Japanese_Unicode, and Japanese_XJIS_100.  Trying to use the documentation to understand the differences between these collations was very frustrating.  I chose the Japanese_Bushu_Kakusu_100_CI_AI collation, but then got errors from the dialog about an unsupported collation.  I could run a CREATE DATABASE command specifying the Japanese_Bushu_Kakusu_100 collation without an error, but if I tried to display the properties of the database using Management Studio, I received more errors.
Because it is recommended to use Windows collations on SQL Server 2008, is the problem the operating system I am running on?  If the OS doesn't support the collation, then why would it show as an option in the new database dialog, or allow me to create a database with that collation.
We will be shipping our product to Japanese customers so I need to know all aspects of this situation.  I will be using the 2.0 MSJDBC driver to communicate with the database.
What collation should the customer choose?  Does the answer depend on what versions of Windows is being used just on the host of the database server, or does the version of Windows of the client running the Java application server have an effect of what works?
I would like to give the customers precise and accurate instructions and recommendations to avoid problems, and we need how to set up our servers to do functional and performance testing correctly in Japanese.

DB:2.62:Sql Server 2008 Collation Setting And Windows Versions km

I appreciate your reply.  I am finding it impossible to determine the exact differences between these collations. I cannot find any Microsoft documentation on this.  I can actually create a database using the CREATE DATABASE command from a Windows XP 2003 64-bit OS machine with an unsupported collation. Shouldn't SQL Server throw an error if you specify a collation that it cannot use?

    Hi SSAS gurus,
Could you tell me, please, what collation gets a new dimension (cube), that collation isn't specified in create script, from Server collation or from data base collation? In the MSDN there isn't clear information related to it.
If I create a new database from script, where only the collation of the database specified, all dimension and cubes get collation from server, but not from database. But in the SQL Server DB Engine all the objects inherit collation from database not from server.
How can I specify the collation of the data base object in the SSAS project? Is there in UI any place to set collation of database in the project?

DB:2.62:Collations In Ssas. How Should It Work? jd

Yes, a am sure. The database desn't exists on the target server and database script has callation set only for database, neither for cubes nor for dimensions.

DB:2.62:How Do I Change The Collation For All Columns In All Tables In A Single Database? aj

Greetings,My shop receives from our customers databases that share the same schema.  (The databases are from a commerical software package that we and our customers all use.)  For reasons we don't understand, we occassionally receive a database that has a different collation than the others databases.  When we encounter such a database, we need to go through dozens of tables and change hundreds of collations to the correct collation.  The database schema specifies collations at the column level.Does anyone have a good approach for changing column collations or know of any utility that would automate this process?  We are thinking of writing scripts to change the collations, but the task seems worse the more we look at it because indexes and constraints need to be removed before the collation can be altered.  Thanks--BCB

DB:2.62:How Do I Change The Collation For All Columns In All Tables In A Single Database? aj

Thank you, and I've come to agree with you - there is no easy way to change collations across the board.  We deal with databases that define collation at the column level and we have had to create a rather complex set of procedures that determine which columns have collations that need to be changed, determine which constraints include columns with bad collations, build scripts to drop and create the constraints, drop the constraints, alter all affected columns (assigning the correct collation), and finally recreate the constraints.  Not exactly a walk in the park but it works.BCB

DB:2.62:Attribute Key Cannot Be Found While Processing Dimension 81

    Hi All,
I have been working with SSAS for good amount of time. I have this kind of error many times but this error is weird for me. Let me tell you
scenario clearly. I have a fact table which deals Apps and its Publishers . I have publisher dimension also. In the publisher dimension i have PublisherName column , this column can have NVarchar data.
When i am processing the cube i came with the error message saying that AttributeKey cannot be found when processing DimPublisher , Attribute
    PublisherName , value株式会社FXトレーディングシステムズ

The above name has the trialing space for the publisherName. But i am able to query my Database with this value and able see some records for the
dimension table , by the below query
    select * from DimPublishers where PublisherCompanyName=N'株式会社FXトレーディングシステムズ '

I am reallysurprisedto see why SSAS is not able recognize the trailing spaces for the name.
Same kind of error message even occurred for the
countryName also . Cube failure countryName value isTokyo .Here CountryName tokyo has a
tab space after the CountryName. see the SQL query through which i am able to see some records from Database.
select * from DimPublishers where Country ='Tokyo '

Note:1) For the above two attributes the key column of the
dimension is set the same attribute itself. Collations of both SQL and AS are set to default collations
    2) I Resolved the error by changing the key column of these attributes to Dimension's Key attribute which is PusbliherKey. After this change
i am able to process the cube successfully.
But this is not what my attribute members should have .
Can you please help me why SSAS is giving me this error ?

DB:2.62:Attribute Key Cannot Be Found While Processing Dimension 81

    Hi Dunae ,
    Thanks for your reply.
I resolved my problem by removing the unnecessary atttributes from the dimension and kept the key column of AppName as AppName AppKey . As i have relatively lesser number of apps in this way , that wont make much a difference even if have
    appnames repeating in the report.
Your approach also sounds correct .. !!!

    Hi!
We have a vendor's case-sensitive db which we have to Trans Rep our case-insensitive data into.  Can't do it directly as it violates the Rep rule against different collations.  Is there some trick or work-around we can use to implement this?

DB:2.62:Is There A Way To Trans Rep To Machine Of Different Collation Seq? 3d

There is no trick, at the same time we won't prevent you from doing it, just understand you can get PK violations and if your objects make reference to a collation that's not matching on the subscriber db, then it will fail to be created.

Hi,RSOSFIELDMAP is a table name and not a transaction. To get to the table, you need to execute transaction SE16 and put in the RSOSFIELDMAP table name. Once done, hit execute and you'll get a selection screen. You can then fill up the values you want to look up and hit execute again. That'll give you the details you are looking for.Cheers,Kedar

    1. I notice that denali ctp3 BOL says this about the server collation:
The default server collation is set during SQL Server setup, and also becomes the default collation of the system databases and all user databases. Note that
Unicode-only collations cannot be selected during SQL Server setup because they are not supported as server-level collations.
Unicode collations must be selected individually at the database, column or expression level because
they are not supported at the server level.

I must be misunderstanding this.--This didn't seem to me true in past versions--anddon't knowwhat it implies (does denali uselegacy sql-compatible collations for the server?). At any rate, my server (sql 2008 R2) has
this asits server collation property -- a unicode collation:
    Latin1_General_100_CI_AS_KS_WS
    Is this a problem?
    2. Anyone know if the SC checked collations are expected to be slower or about the same as their non-checked versions?
    thanks.

I have a join to another database on the same server with different collations that was working perfectly fine but now ends up getting a tempdb error after about 40 minutes.

What I am curious about learning is how the joins from one database to another on the same server is managed and how might I be able to look into if that link has an issue of some kind. Granted tempdb would be the primary place to look given that it is in fact what the error is saying but I have been asked to look at other possibilities because that has been looked into.

    DB:2.60:Collation Issue? zf

Turns out the source of my problem lies somewhere else and it appears to be hardwear and load. Having said that,I did get a slight increase in performance by using the collation on the left instead of the right for my query.

I'm looking for some kind of official documentation on sorting order in the various Windows operating systems. For example, this would affect the Array.Sort() function call. I know that this is linked to the collations being used and that those are linked to the regional settings. I also know I could just write a little sort function and test it with a bunch of different settings, but I'm hoping there is something out there that already has it. I am not interested in something specific only to SQL server, though that forum might know. Basically, if I choose Latin1_General what is the character order I'll get, if I choose Modern_Spanish what is the order, etc... Any ideas on which forum would be most helpful? Thanks

Is it possible to maintain different collations for instance, in that instance for system databases different collations and for user databases different collations and

in table for each column we can maintainseparate collations?

    DB:2.58:Collation Settings? ak

To add on to Hugo's response, be aware that it is best to use a single standard collationunless you have a specific reason to do otherwise. Youmay end up with problems due to collation conflicts that require workarounds that can negatively
impact query performance due to non-sarable expressions. So it is certainly possible to have multiple collations but it does complicate things.

2.Would like to know what is the impact if I communicate between two sql server having different system/application database collation settings.
3.Is there any harm, if I have system database collation as different and application database collation different?
    4.What is the difference between

After the schema is imported to project I am getting a collation conflict, I then try to change the collation in project settings to the collation that is mis matching. This gets rid of the error so I am able to deploy but then after the deploy and a compare back to the database the schema was pulled from the collations are different. These errors were not occuring when I was using CTP5, but I was using SQL 2000 for CTP5. DB:2.55:List Definition kz

Just adding to his thread, you can create a list instance via two ways
    1. List Template
    2. List Definitions
List templates are the templates you created by using the option - Save as a Template on an existing list.
List definitions are the templates you create from scratch by changing the List defintions - System Files like Schema.xml, etc. Usually site defintions in depth knowledge of the features but give you maximum capability to customize the list schema as you
can create fields, views, etc in the defintion. Also list defintions are portable and easy to use on different site collections, web applications ,etc.

    Hi Harvinder,

As you have mentioned, using Unicode data type can store characters in these languages. The properly issue may be the collation conflict with different collations comparison, such as Chinese_PRC_CI_AS, Japanese_CI_AS. You can specify the collation by manual
on the T-SQL statement to avoid this type of conflict.Best Regards,

Changing the status has no effect on existing instantiated instances.
That being said to switch versions the recommended approach is through
specifying the active date range. You can have multiple templates active

Is it possible to define multiple tempdb with different collations on a single instance of sql server 2005.

I am currently doing research on the implications of moving one of our applications to unicode.  One of our concern is that our instance of sql server server and therefore our tempdb is using a sql server collation instead of a windows (unicode) collation.

Also, the person who installed sql server and is responsible for hardware assures adding a new sql server instance is not an option due to limitations regarding our SAN and lack of hardware ressources.

The goal is for the database to be as performant as possible while manipulating unicode with little modifications to the code.

    DB:2.51:Multiple Tempdb (Collation) 8x

    Thanks Tom,

    you helped a lot.

I am not used to manipulating collation but I just found out we can specify database_default as collation.  This is gonna make coding much easier with regards to portability.

I'll do a few more research about collations and international codes.  For now I believe I will use a windows collation on the database I create and use collate database_default every time I perform a join on a textual field of a temp table.

    Thanks again for your time.

Hi,Why does SQL Server 2005 sometimes install with a server collation of :Server Collation SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and other times a server collation of :Latin1_General_CI_ASWhat causes this ???What is the difference between the two ?Are there any problems restoring databases from one to the other ? Do the two different collations cause problems with applications ?

    DB:2.51:Server Collation Sql_Latin1_General_Cp1_Ci_As Versus Latin1_General_Ci_As da

Take a look at this article:
    http://www.olcot.co.uk/sql-blogs/revised-difference-between-collation-sql_latin1_general_cp1_ci_as-and-latin1_general_ci_as
    Here are the article's conclusions:
So to answer the question that I was asked regarding these two collations, I would have to say this: With varchar based data,
there are small but significant differences with the sorting and comparison of data if you used the collationSQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS or if you usedLatin1_General_CI_AS. Character expansion is one such difference and this difference is caused
by the fact that the rules that both collations use for sorting/comparing are different. The rules for nvarchar data sorting/comparisons seem to be identical though from the tests that I have been able to do. Mixing the collations at column, database or instance
level could impact on your performance quite heavily or cause collation conflict errors and mixing comparisons of varchar and nvarchar data as well can seriously impact on performance especially if you are using the older SQL collation. Keeping tabs on your
collation settings across your SQL platform is very important.

There are various recommendations or rules of thumbs on what collation you should use for new instances as there are pros and cons for both but the general consensus tends to lean towards using the newer windows collations rather than the older SQL collations.
But as always with SQL development, you need to evaluate all options and then test those options to see what works best within your infrastructure.
I have decided to re-install all new servers and objects to match collations. Fun!

    --James

    DB:2.50:Definition Of Maxinspectlength ? 8x

In the case of TCP it is measured from the beginning of the TCP Stream. (mostly used in the STRING.TCP engine)

It takes the payloads from each packet in the TCP stream and concatenates them together and the sensor will then inspect the first bytes in the stream up till MaxInspectLength is reached.

So if the first packet has 50 bytes and the MaxInspectLength is less than 50 then only the data in the payload of this first packet in the stream will be inspected.

If, however, each packet has 5 bytes, and MaxInspectLength is set to 50. Then the payload from the the first 10 packets will be inspected until 50 bytes are inspected. The payloads from the additional packets in the stream will not be inspected.

In the case of UDP I believe it is from the beginning of the payload (STRING.UDP).

    DB:2.50:Scom 2012 - Recreate Only The Dw 98

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has been able to recreate the DW database without doing a complete reinstall of SCOM?
Happy to lose any data in it but since it is now created as part of the main install rather than being a separate component, not sure if there's any way to do this without doing a complete reinstall.
The reason is we want to change its collation so it can sit in the same SQL instance as the OPs DB (and currently they're different collations)
    Thanks

    Steve

    DB:2.50:Scom 2012 - Recreate Only The Dw 98

As an update I've now done the following:

    1. Install a temporary new management group and specified a SQL instance with the desired collation for both ops db and data warehouse db. Also used the same service accounts as production to ensure permissions on the databases were the same.
    2. Remove prod reporting
    3. Stop all production scom services and delete the DW database.
    4. Backup and restore the new DW DB in its place.
    5. Update the dbo. MemberDatabase table with the new value
    6. Restart SCOM services
So far it looks ok - assuming nothing untoward appears I'll re-add the reporting component.

    Best Regards

    Steve

How about Swedish Norwegian? Swedish Danish? Aren't they close?

They are close, but ortography and alphabet are different. The last three letters in the Swedish alphabet is , the last three in Danish and Norwegian are . And before you think that this could be combined, you should know
that and are the same, and so are and .
Interesting enough, Danish and Norwegian shared collations originally, but have parted ways in the new 100 collations. I don't know why, but there may be a subtle difference.
In any case, what matters is ortography and alphabet. Whether the languages are related are completely immaterial. But a common history helps. For instance, there are no Basque collations, and from what I know about Basque, it should get along just fine
with Modern_Spanish. In the same vein, I suspect that there more than one Amerindian language that can use Latin1_General, because it shares ortography with English.

Hi Dimitry,There seems to be a mismatch between the collation settingof the MSSQL Server 2000 and the database. The installation guide for ECC 5.0 at http://service.sap.com/instguides - mySAP Business suite- ERP - ERP2004 - ECC 5.0Section 1.6.1.1 descibes the collation settings. Please check the prerequisites, I believe some of them may apply to your situation. As far as the change of db collation from bin to bin2 fornon-unicode is concerned, there are no such serious consequences, as SAP itself recommends this change in the guide.RegardsSrikishan

DB:2.50:Definition Of A Parcel (Package) dk

    HI Blondi!

Skinned provided a nice response, and I added to that.

But to keep the 2 straight, just think of this....

A package is a SHAPE. You need to know the shape (postcard, letter, flat, parcel, etc.) in order to calculate postage for a mailpiece within a certain CLASS of mail such as First-Class Mail or Standard Mail or Package Services.

As noted below, Parcel Post is a sub-category/class of Package Services. And within Parcel Post, there are machinable parcel/package prices and nonmachinable package/parcel prices.

    Thanks for the question!

    Hi,
I have recently installed SBS 2011 Standard as a VM and Server 2008 Standard R2 as a VM (running SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard) on a physical Dell server using Hyper-V. The second VM running Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2 (Premium Add-On Pack) is presumably
only licensed for one 'instance' of SQL Server? I have recently found out that our two main databases (Sage and a contact management system) require different location collations. One requires the SQL UK version and the other the USA. It sounds as if we will
have to buy a license for another installation SQL Server 2008 R2?
The SQL server side of events is being handled by external engineers as my experience with SQL is minimal.

I am having a problem converting an XML column (variable) to a date time. Oddly enough, the query works in the master database, but not any of the user databases on the server. This query works fine in my QA and development (SQLEXPRESS) servers. I have looked at collations and I have dbo privs on the user databases. Is there anything that can be suggested why this fails. Is there particular permissions required? Running a CAST on the same string to DATETIME works fine.
    DECLARE

    @x XMLSELECT @x = 'date2009-08-19T16:06:55Z/date'SELECT @x.value('date[1]','DATETIME') AS date
Msg 241, Level 16, State 1, Line 3Conversion failed when converting datetime from character string.

DB:2.50:Xml Data Type Conversion Error xm

I can reproduce the problem in a database with Compatibility Level = 80 (the SQL Server 2000 level). Removing the Z from the end of the data allows it to work correctly in such databases. The same date and time is parsed regardless of whether or not the Z is specified.I'm guessing this behavior is because SQL Server 2000 did not support Z at the end of a date and time. Running a CAST on the same string to DATETIME works fine. The following CAST did not work for me in the Compatibility Level 80 database when I specified Z. It failed the same way as the XML code, strongly indicating that the XML processing is doing an ordinary cast behind the scenes. (There does not seem to be any special understanding of the XML schema dateTime data type going on here. If there were, support for Z would be mandatoryper theXML Schema Data Types specification.)SELECT CAST('2009-08-19T16:06:55Z' AS DATETIME)

    Hi,

I have a C# application, which creates bunch of SSIS packages on the fly, executes and saves it in a network folder. When we re-run the c# application, it picks up the existing (saved) package and executes it, if the package does not exist, then it creates the package.

An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.

component OLE DB Destination (16) failed validation and returned validation status VS_ISBROKEN.
One or more component failed validation.
There were errors during task validation.

There has been no changes in either sql server schema or sybase schema.

Actually this is a third package to behave this wierd. There were 2 other instances where I got the same error for a different package. Once we drop and re-create the table in Sql server, eveything works fine.

    Symptom
With the growth of the Internet, it is very import to expand a database to support a global market. Although you could specify the collations for your server, databases, tables or columns, the collations dictate one data page and corresponding characters that can be represented for that data type. It is difficult to find one code page for the database that can store all the required language-specific characters.

    Solution
The easiest way to manage character data in international databases is to always use the Unicode nchar, nvarchar, and nvarchar(max) data types, instead of their non-Unicode equivalents, char, varchar, and text. Unicode is a standard for mapping code points to characters. Since it is designed to cover all the characters of all the languages of the world, there is no need for different code pages to handle different sets of characters.

DB:2.49:Sql Collation When Upgrading To Tfs 2010? 9j

Do the SQL Servercollation settings for TFS 2010 have to match between the SQL Server Database Engine and Analysis Services?
I am currently testing an upgrade from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010. Our TFS 2008 installation uses the default collation for SQL Server 2005, which is SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. So, when I upgrade TFS, the default site collection databasethat
is upgraded from the old TFS 2008databases has this collation setting, regardless of what I use in the SQL Server Database Engine install.
Analysis Services does not have SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS as an option, so for that I use Latin1_General_CI_AS.
So, my TFS 2010 choices are these:
Test Env1:SQL Server 2008 DB Engine uses Latin1_General_CI_AS, but default project collection database uses SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, which isdifferent from other TFS databases; Analysis Services uses Latin1_General_CI_AS
Test Env2: SQL Server 2008 DB Engine uses SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and collations of all TFS relational databases match; Analysis Services uses Latin1_General_CI_AS
Does anyone know if either of these is acceptable? So far, one developer has reported that Test Env1 does not return the current codeset, but returns some old code when he attempts a build. I need to look into that further. (BTW, I did
    apply this hotfix: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/KB2135068)
Test Env2 hasn't been looked at by developers yet, but I am unsure whether different collations for the DB Engine and Analysis Services are OK.
Any guidance or experience is appreciated.
    Thank you,

I feel running a script to alter all the tables and change the collations is easier. Now KB325335 recommends using SSIS/DTS to achieve this.
Any downsides to the 1st method? I feel this requires the least effort from DBA side. The other method is also essentially the same as the constraints needs to be dropped and recreated with the diff being the entire db being recreated and data copied.
Any views please?Paul - SQL DBA

DB:2.49:Change Database Collation Including Existing Tables 9k

I would prefer to create a database with desired COLLATION from the scratch
Any advantages of going through the SSIS way?
    a) Easy to build
    b) fast processing (OLEDB provider with fast load option)
    c) Can bewrapped into the job and scheduled

DB:2.49:Availability Groups With Different Collations ?? xp

    Hello,

Is it possible to create several Availability Groups with different collations ?
I want to use a common SQL infrastructure for System Center.

    Thank you.

Just an FYI, this wouldn't work for him in this situation. If you read up on contained database you'll find out they have a fixed collation (bolded and underlined for emphasis):

Since a design objective of contained databases is to make them self-contained, the dependence on the instance and tempdb collations must be severed. To do this, contained databases introduce the concept of the catalog collation. The catalog collation
is used for system metadata and transient objects. Details are provided below. In a contained database, the catalog collation Latin1_General_100_CI_AS_WS_KS_SC.This collation is the same for all contained databases
on all instances of SQL Server and cannot be changed.

DB:2.49:Table And Column Collation Properties 1d

I want to list collation properties of all the tables and  in my database. Is there an easy way of listing all of these objects ?
I have a feeling that some columns in my tables have different collations. I am using SQL Server 2005.
    Thx in advance

DB:2.49:Azure Data Sync Collation Error 3k

    Hello,
When I try to deploy an Azure Data Sync group, I am getting the error message Cannot resolve the
collation conflict between Latin1_General_CI_AS and Latin1_General_CI_AI in the equal to operation. This is the same issue as in these two posts:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-HK/ssdsgetstarted/thread/f87cceb7-cae7-407d-ae8a-86fec985e157
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ssdsgetstarted/thread/faa23879-18ec-4916-be1e-31292a7964c3
Except I am syncing an On-Premise database rather than 2 Azure databases, and my On-Premise database is on SQL Server 2008 R2, not SQL Express.
I have ensured that none of my primary keys have collations on them, so I don’t think that is my issue. However, the error message doesn’t specify a table or column. In my on-premises database, there are 31 columns with a collation of Latin1_General_CI_AI.
The Azure data base appears to have all collations set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, which I gather from documentation is not modifiable. Do I need to alter all tables to use this collation in the on-premises database before syncing will work?
Or is there a way to narrow down the issue to a particular table and column?

are you using filters on columns other than the PK?

    Hello,

Iguess you may have to try them, although there are not many binary collations. These collations are not common to use , and I have never used binary collations on production databases.

    Hope this helps.
