Our workstations are created in an import container, we have to move them

to the regional ou\'s. After the move some of the workstations fail to be

remotely controlled and need to be re-imported. It seems the only good

time to move the workstation object is when the machine is off. is there

    anyway around this?

DB:4.09:Thread: Workstation Object Moves And Remote Control ds

after you move a workstation object, it will need to be rebooted before

it recognises that it\'s moved (also, it takes 2 reboots before the

workstation helper reconnects with the new name, so you won\'t get

workstation associated apps until then). The workstation also needs to

be able to contact the import service to find out where it\'s been moved

    to!

    ZENworks 7.0.1 on NW6.5SP6/eDir 8.7.3.9ftf3

As users log into multiple workstations or as laptops acquire new IP addresses (as they move from WAP to WAP), these IP addresses become associated with the user or workstation object in eDirectory. As those IP addresses are released (user logs off a workstation or laptop moves to another wap), the old IP addresses stick around for a time until some process later must clean them up.

In the interem however, a bunch of invalid IP\'s are associated with a user or workstation object. When a helpdesk support rep tries to remote control, the remote control app presents all of these IP addresses. Since the remote user is not familiar with principals of IP networks, it becomes a chore to determine which IP address the user is actually on at the time in order to successfully remote control the pc they are on.

Is there a way to clean up these invalid IP\'s up sooner?

I have two questions about the image safe data.

1 If I rename a workstation, at what point does the image safe data update?

I have a situation where if I rename a workstation then after one reboot and

windows starts, if I shut down and reboot again and check the image safe

data, the workstation name has changed but the workstation ID for eDirectory

hasn\'t changed. Using and unreg, deleting the workstation object from the

tree and then registering again doesn\'t help. Is there a fix other than

manually editing the image safe data?

2 I thought it might be a good idea to move my imported workstations to a

container that reflected their location in the organisation. When I move

the workstation, and then try to remote control it I get an invalid or

obsolete workstation object error. If I check the image safe data the

workstation ID for eDirectory does not reflect its new position in the tree.

If I move a workstation object in the tree, should the image safe data

update to reflect the change? Or, do I have to edit this changed

    information manually?

    DB:3.07:Thread: Don't Suppress Wall Paper? s1

I looking for a way that ZCM does not suppress the workstation wallpaper when someone remote view and remote control a workstation. I remember there being an option not to have remote view or remote control suppress the wallpaper of a workstation in Zenworks 7, but I cannot seem to find that setting in zcm.

    DB:3.07:Thread: Don't Suppress Wall Paper? s1

If you go to the Configuration page, expand Device Management, then select Remote Management, Under Performance Settings During Remote Session there is the option to suppress wall paper.

Unchecking that should do it for you.

    Hi,

We are running zen for desktops 4 and having an interesting problem. Remote control will work fine for awhile and then will stop working

work controlling from the user object but not the workstation object.

This will come and go with no obvious reason for it. The remote

Possible reasons for failure could be:

    1. Basic connectivity problems between the main and branch office.

    2. If the IP address of the target workstation changes, then the

    IP

    address

stored in the WM:Network Address attribute of the workstation

I\'ve used the remote operator tool to give three users the ability tocontrol our workstations. Now all workstation objects have the three

    users as trustee.

Now we\'ve decided to create a group object and connect it with the

    workstation objects.

Is there a chance to delete all these single user trustees without

deleting every trustee separately on every workstation object?

DB:3.04:Thread: Delete Remote Operator Trusties a3

    Hi Kai!

The rights are OK, but my problem is to keep track of the workstationobjects. I just want to have one group object for each workstation

objekt as a trustee and not a group object with three user objects.

The users are now members of the group. We have nearly 1000

workstation objects, so I have to to right click on every workstationobject to delete the user trustees separately. But this would be a

    hard work.

I gave the users the rights to control the workstations, but then I

decided to use a group instead.

works from the workstation object. What does not work is the user object

does not show the logged in workstation

DB:3.03:Thread: User Object To Showing Logged In Workstation ss

    A few questions:

    1. Are you referring to the \'Logged in Workstations\' tab in the ZENworks

property page of a user object? How do you intend to use this

    information

    for Remote Control?

YES I was looking for that information. Then I would go to details of

the workstation, and then remote control from the workstation object.

But the user object was not showing the logged in workstation.

    2. The above information is not used by Remote Control snapins. You just

need to see the IP address of the target workstation in the Workstation

field of the dialog box that comes up after you right click the user

    object

and select Remote Management. Do you see the IP address?

Thanks, I didn\'t realize that was an option. I do see the IP address and

    Hey,

We have two servers at our High School. One is on the student network

and eveyrthing works great such as Remote Control, policies, NDPS,

    workstation import and imaging etc...

Our Admin Server however is causing problems with importing workstations

properly into the tree. The Admin server is on a completely different

tree altogether, and it\'s the only server in the tree.

Both servers are on Netware 6 SP5 and Zenworks 4.01 ir6.

It seems that when I try and import a workstation in the admin tree, it

comes up with several java messages on the workstation screen on the

server and it will import this workstation and no other. In order to get

another workstation imported we have to run ZFDSTOP and then ZFDSTART

again and then register the new workstation. Also, I created a

Workstation group object and when the workstation gets imported it

doesn\'t become a member of the workstation group object but it should, we

have to manually make it a member, the server policy package has it that

it should automatically make a workstation a member of the workstation

object but it doesn\'t as mentioned above.

Now the Student Server for importing workstations work great and you

don\'t have to run ZFDSTOP and then ZFDSTART again to register a new

workstation and import it into the tree. Also, no Java messages appear

on the workstation import screen such that occurs on the admin server,

just messages if the workstation object already exists or if a new

workstation object got created. We have no problems with our student

    server as mentioned above.

I compared all settings on our student server to our admin server, such

as Server Policy Pacakage, Trustee Assignments, Container Policy Package,

All management agaents are updated with the newest Novell Clients for

Windows XP and Windows 98SE and still workstation importing is not

working properly on the admin server. By the way, we manually register

our workstations on both servers, we are not using the host file for

automatic workstation importing. We created a application object for the

admin server and student server which points to the wsreg.exe file found

in C:\\Program Files\\Novell\\Zenworks and for the command line parameters

    we put in

-importserver (server IP address). This works on the student server but

when we register on admin server the command prompt window opens and

    never registers.

I think this is also affecting Remote Control, because when I register a

workstation on the admin server as mentioned above i have to run ZFDSTOP

and then ZFDSTART again to register a workstation and do it all over

again when I want to register another workstation. The workstation does

not become a member of the workstation group object which is associated

with a workstation policy package where remote control is enabled.

Can I uninstall and then reinstall Zenworks for Desktops 4 Server from

the Companion CD (uninstall all the ZFD components)? Is there something

else that can just be causing the problem such as just reinstalling Java

from the Zenworks companion CD as well as the workstation import and

workstation removal from the companion CD? Can I just reinstall all or

certain ZFD components? If I reinstall Zenworks for Desktops 4 Server I

know that I will have to install Zenworks 4.01SPb and then Zenworks 4.01

    ir6 again.

Thanks! I\'m just trying to get this workstation import problem fixed on

    the Admin Server.

    Brad

DB:2.96:Thread: Reinstall Zenworks 4 Zfd Components cd

Are you using Universal Password in the admin tree setup?

You could reinstall Java(1.4.2x) If that doesn\'t help, server import service and install just that component off the CD. Repatch and see if it works right.

    Here\'s what\'s real strange:

    Using ZfD 4.01 in ConsoleOne.

Right-click on a user and select REmote Managment and pick Remote

    Control.

The remote control workstation I am TRYING to RC is a windows 2000 SP4

pc with the 4.83 SP1 Novell client and ZfD 3.2 with SP1 clients.

    I get: Error 1900

Failed to contact the remote management agent.

However, if I find the workstation object and remote control via THAT

    method, it works fine.

I\'ve noticed that with my servers that are running netware version 6sp5 I get the following message when trying to remote control by the workstation object. I\'ve set operator rights to remote these machines and it doesn\'t matter.

Either you do not have rights to Remote Control or the target workstation is not configured with TCP/IP Remote control cannot be launched. My machines are running tcp/ip only and are using version 4spb for Zenworks agent. The Server is running version 4 for Zenworks. Not sure what i am to do. We do own Version 6.5 but will not get that going until later this year and want this to work.

I'm running VMware Server (Build 28343) and using the VMware Server Console (Build 28343) installed on a remote XP workstation to access the VM. I have a user experiencing a 3 second delay in the mouse control when he moves the mouse in and out of the VM. Other users do not have any problems.

We have unchecked the following settings to prevent him from accidentally moving in and out:

    1. Ungrab when cursor leaves window

    2. Grab when cursor enters window

Obviously it seem to be something local to the machine.

Try changing the settings for the mouse itself in the virtual machine image - on the Pointers tab make sure 'Enable pointer shadow' is unchecked. This always gives me nice, zippy mouse response. I don't know why the pointer shadow causes such a problem but this fixes my slow mouse cursor every time.

Whenever I move a workstation object (WO) in the tree to a new OU, upon

    Hi!

I\'ve setup workstation import, workstations are created in user

contexts, but I can\'t remote view and remote control it.

    In wenwsimp.log there is

    Jun 5, 2006 9:20:41 AM Created workstation: user@ws@10_0_0_185.xxx.xxxx

Jun 5, 2006 9:20:41 AM Could not set the password. The workstation must

    be removed and imported again.

Jun 5, 2006 9:20:56 AM A workstation object with the same name and

network address was found in the specified container. The existing

object will be used rather than creating a new one.

    Jun 5, 2006 9:20:56 AM javax.naming.AuthenticationException [Root

    exception is com.novell.service.session.InvalidDomainNameExcept ion:

    user@ws@10_0_0_185.xxx.xxxx; check root causes]

    What to do?

    Alexey

    DB:2.87:Thread: Workstation Import Problems 3k

    Alexey Podgorchuk,

Problem was in @ in ws name. It seems to be bug, because in zfd 401 it

    works fine.

    Interesting.

Isn\'t that one of those special character\'s that are not supposed to be

    used?

You might set dloglevel=3 in the zenwsimp.ncf file so that we can full

logging. Maybe from there we can see why import doesn\'t like that

    character.

We have Zen 4.0.1 running on NW6 and on most users you can right click on

We have a handfull of users that always show: Error 1759: The selected user

If I go to Zenworks and Logged in Workstations it shows the registered

We associate all apps at the container level to avoid this. We have a

We have a large number of users (helpdesk) with access to turning off the prompt for user permission to control a workstation so that they can access a workstation if need be.

However, this can create a user perception of lack of security (which is how this query has come up).

My understanding of the way effective policies works is that if you turn off the prompt for user permission at the workstaion object it will override a policy set at the container level.

My question is whether it is possible to set up a way so that the container policy is scheduled to refresh at a particular time and reset the policy at the workstation object?

Not that I know of (other than deleting the workstation objects from time to time -but that would remove any link that has been set at workstation level).

A way to handle this better could be to create a new remote workstation policy that gets applied to the workstation in question. Then you\'d only have to remove that association from time to time.

Try to use the drop down menu where LISA is written to use the IP

    address.

If it works, then you have a DNS issue.

It seems that ZCC passes an order like connect to host lisa (with

    NO DNS

suffix) to the remote management tool.

So you need to have DNS and default domain setup on the box where

    you want

Pehaps check the user for effective policies.

I\'m having a problem with the Request Session option when trying to

remote control a computer both through Middle Tier and within our

network. The problem occurs with the ZEN agent from both ZEN 7 and 7

SP1. (We use just the Agent, no Novell Client). If I logon to the

computer with a NDS account (using Dynamic Local User), the Request

Session option is grayed out. When I try to remote control the computer

from ConsoleOne, it times out with an error 1854: Unable to contact the

managed workstation as the managed workstation cannot be located. The

Workstation object has the correct IP address. If I logon locally, then

the Request Session option is available and I can remote control the

computer. If I logon locally and then use the NAL Middle Tier logon to

authenticate, Request Session is still available. I\'ve checked our

Remote Control policy and Allow user to request remote session is

checked, as is Accept Connections across NAT/Proxy. The workstation

    override is unchecked. Thanks!

We run Windows XP with the netware client 4.90 and zen for desktops

    4.01.

I\'m able to remote control the registered workstation by the

    workstation

object and by the ip-address but it\'s not possible to remote control

    it by

the user object. I see the worktstation under logged in

    workstations.

We run edir 8.62 sp3 and I also have IP as preferred protocol.

I can\'t find any TID for this error. Do someone know this problem?

    Thanks a lot

    Matthias

which way round has the error? If the machine you\'re controlling has 4.9, or the machine running ConsoleOne? And are you using C1 to do the

remote control, or Holger Dopp\'s workstation browser?

I am trying the Middle Tier for the first time and cannot get remote control to work. From the workstation object in C1 I get an 1858 timeout error when trying to establish a session. On the client the request a session item is grayed out even though this setting is enabled in the workstation policy object.

Is there a trick to making remote control work with the Middle Tier (not using the Novell Client)?

With no Novell client I used this and it works great... Just what the doctor

I have found that this is initially working using the middle tier but

then breaks when I move the workstation object. I don\'t normally move

workstation objects around, so maybe I will just stop doing that. Then

    I am good to go!

I need to remote control machines located on Private Network A

(14.x.x.x) from a machine located on Private Network B (172.x.x.x).

Addresses on A are NAT\'d. I have no problems when connecting via the

User object, however, when I attempt to connect via the Workstation

    object the connection times-out.

    Any suggestions?

Is there anyway to lower the volume of a workstation using apple remote desktop?

    thanks!

    DB:2.79:Control Volume Remotely? k7

The commands aren't specific to ARD so any good book on UNIX, particularly one oriented to Mac OS X, would be useful. The more you know about UNIX as it applies to Mac OS X, the more you can accomplish in maintaining and controlling Mac OS X, whether via ARD or at the computer itself O'Reilly's Learning Unix for Mac OS X Tiger would probably be a good place to start.

Got a problem remoting just one workstation on my network. In looking at

the Information of the Remote Management agent in the managed

    What causes that?

After importing workstations, remote control works fine. After a few

days, remote ping might work but NOT remote control. Sometimes even remote ping errors out with the message that the REMOTE MANAGEMENT

    AGENT

IS NOT RUNNING(when it appears it is). If I stop and start the

    novell

wuser agent service, then I can usually remote control the

    workstation

again. Occasionally, however, I get the message The Remote

    Management

agent was unable to locate the workstation in NDS. At which point I

    have

to delete the workstation object and re-import the workstation to be

    able

    to remote control it again.

    Any help is appreciated.

my guess is that the workstation doesn\'t think it\'s been imported,

    Hi,

I am getting the following message when trying to remote control a

    workstation:

Remote management agent was unable to access the workstation object.

    Check

if the workstation is correctly registered

The workstation is in the correct container, the correct IP and MAC

    address

is contained in the object and the user appears in User History.

I can Ping the Remote Management Agent and see workstation

    Diagnostics.

However I cant remote control and if I try to transfer files I receive

    this

    message:

User logged into Target does not have permission to read workstationobject

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks

Does this key contain the correct information, workstation

    registration

will not occur if the workstation was registered with another tree orsuch.

If it does contain the incorrect information, you can either run

unreg32.exe or manually delete the identification key.

Is there a way to remote control a Workstation through Zenworks without

    DB:2.78:Thread: Remote Control cp

ZfD4 questions really belong in the zfd4 forums, not this which is for

6.5, but anyhow: yes, just make sure that the effective policy for the

user *and the workstation* have the prompt user unchecked.
