I am currently running first version of WHS for my small business. I was wondering if anybody knows to upgrade path to WHS 2011 and what are the glitches (if any) with this upgrade.

    Windows Home Server v1 is 32 bit only . . . Windows Home Server 2011 is 64 bit only . . . an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit won't work.

I am running WHS on my home network. All of my client computers are Windows 7. Whenever I remote access into them (via the WHS Website), Aero functionality and desktop wallpaper are not enabled. Is there a way to edit the RDP settings for the WHS website
so it can run those settings (similar to going to MSTSC and selecting the LAN Experience Settings)?

DB:3.75:Edit Rdp Settings For Whs Site? j9

Unfortunately I don't believe it's possible to do what you want. Windows Home Server uses a Remote Desktop proxy to allow you access to your home computers, and that proxy (i.e. your server) is where rendering is occurring. Since your server is running an
OS that doesn't support Aero, Aero isn't rendered.
You could always submit a product suggestion on Connect, however.I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

The expiration on my RC install is coming up and except for the lack of x64 connector, I've been very happy with WHS. So now I'm faced with a decision, do I purchase the OEM for WHS or do I just flip from this beta to the Win2008 Server beta?

Pondering this question got me to wondering if anyone has tried installing WHS on top of Hyper-v (or VMWare ESX, etc)?

I know this probably won't be a supported configuration even once Hyper-v is out of beta but I sure would love to leverage my WHS hardware better and learn some about Win2008 and hyper-v at the same time.

Any experience, positive or negative would be great. If you find yourself posting just to tell me I'm crazy but you don't have any information beyond this, don't bother. I already know.

Regarding the x64 connector, Microsoft is working on it and plans an announcement at CES this year. This will not be the release of the x64 connector, only a statement about when it will be available.

Hi, I'm finally ready to go buy a WHS primarily for storing/sharing music and movies on my home network.  However, after looking at the forums and information available from Microsoft, the process of getting DVD's onto the WHS such that they can be viewed via a Media Center Extender (specifically a 360 and media center PC's) looks rather arduous.  I had the assumption that the WHS experience would be similar to Apple TV in it's ease of use but that's not the perception I have after looking more closely.  Can someone please give me some insight into how well the scenario I outlined above is enabled through WHS out of the box and if not ready out of the box, what needs to be done? Thanks.Michael

Once the time bomb has been triggered, you will have no way to recover; unfortunately (for you) this is by design. Your best bet, as the other poster has said, is to reinstall. Before you do so, however, I would recommend replacing the CMOS battery.

When it comes to buying and building my PCs I sometimes do it on the cheap.  I try not to spend on more than I need.

I currently have 3 systems in my household now.  One is my WHS.  I built it with a used Dell Optiplex GX240 w/1.7 Ghz mid-tower with 768 Mb of memory that I got from ebay.  I also purchased a used 250GB hard drive to go with the 80GB that came with the Dell.

I personally been using my WHS to deposit my media files and don’t do any editing from the WHS.  Therefore, I have yet to experience any corruption issues like others.  I have in fact been backing up my other two PCs without any problems.  This is a great product for households with a small network.

I’m hopeful that Microsoft will solve the data corruption issues so that I will be able to safely perform any data / media sharing as well as backups with the new WHS.

I am also very thankful for the support of this forum and the technicians that monitor and respond to questions on this site.

DB:3.39:General Advice About How To Best Use Whs? 3f

With all the vast experience of WHS users in these forums, I'd like to ask for some advice. Currently my network consists of 6 computers, 3 are laptops. Computer A has Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. It has all of my lossless music files, pictures and videos. Computer B has all of my lossy music files and my Outlook contacts and e-mails. Computer C is used solely for my home business. Computer D is a high end gaming computer. I have some important document files duplicated on several machines. I also do very sporadic external hard drive backups. I also generally turn computers off at night, except for the MCE machine which runs 24/7. I'd basically like advice on the best way to use WHS effectively to keep current backups of my machines and to use WHS as a media server if people like that function. Here are some of my thoughts and questions:
    1. Should I just have WHS make daily or weekly backups of all machines and have duplication turned off? After all, I'd have an original on the client machine and a backup on WHS, correct?
    2. Is it better to use WHS more as a media server and move all media to WHS and have duplication turned on?
    3. If duplication is turned on, do you essentially have three copies of every filethat is on a client machine, one on the client and two on WHS?
    4. Do people generally completely backup each client machine, or just selected folders?
    5. When is it best to do your WHS backups? Do you leave all your computers on at night once a week for backups? Or can backups happen while you're computing and not affect your experience?
    6. If someone turns a computer off during a backup, do they receive a warning or does that cause a problem?
    7. What's the best way to utilize periodic external hard drive backups? Do I back up each client machine individually like I currently do, or can I just back up specific portions of WHS?
    8. If it's simple to back up the WHS machine, can you install Acronis True Image Home on the WHS machine and make external hard drive disc images, or do suggest just copying whole uncompressed files to the external drive?
    9. Any other advice on how to get the most of this new adventure? :)
    Thanks.

DB:3.39:General Advice About How To Best Use Whs? 3f

One note: disk imaging tools don't have a very good success rate on Windows Home Server. In general, imaging your system drive (say, if you want to try replace it without a server recovery) is unsupported and will not work without a fair bit of work, and trying to use an archived image is almost guaranteed to end in disaster.I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

Recently, while attempting to resolve my inability to get the WHS Connector function/feature to log on to my installation of WHS .. and just generally peaking around under the hood ... I enabled the License Logging service and joined the WHS system to a Domain.
Shortly after doing so, I began having my WHS system unexpectedly logging me off and shutting itself down after about 1-2hrs, approximate.
    Naturally, PD was in order.
While looking to eliminate HW or possible spware/trojan infection etc as the possible cause I eventually came to the conclusion that it was either:
    A) The enabling of License Logging or (clue was in the Event Log pointing to EULA violations)
    B)  The joining to the Domain triggered some sort of EULA violation response in WHS

So, I disabled License Logging .... and after several reboots after 'unexpected shutdowns' I decided to re-install (repair) the WHS setup. Was also hoping to resolve another issue with the re-installation (Unable to get WHS Connector to function - still getting either Invalid Password or Network Problem ... depending on what configuration changes I make to the setup)
So far, since the re-installation - License Logging disabled and not joined to any Domain) WHS appears to be stable once more.
Sooner or later I'm going to rejoin my WHS to the Domain (without License Logging enabled) to see if joining a Domain played any part in the EULA violation messages.
Question: any similar experience(s) regarding the EULA and WHS?

DB:3.33:Whs Shuts Down Due To License Violation 8x

By default, WHS only accepts clients that are on the same subnet as the server itself. If you have multiple subnets in your house you would have to mess with the firewall settings to change that behavior.

I am using Windows 7 RTM 64-bit, as well as Vista 32-bit and experience the same problem with both. The images are fine when they are stored locally, but as soon as I move them to the WHS they become corrupted. This happens with JPG as well as Canon RAW images. I lost all of my vacation photos, but in testing, everytime I transfer photos from my PC to my WHS they become corrupt. This has only been a recent problem. I have been transferring photos to my WHS for over a year with no problems. All photos already stored on the WHS seem fine, its only images that I transfer now that become corrupt. Anyone else seen this or know of a solution? This problem has destroyed a weeks worth of family vacation memories already, and is putting 5 years of photographs at risk.

I have read other threads that talk about the philosophical aspects of why put a server to sleep....but want to ask this (again) anyway.
I built my WHS up from left over parts from my kid's PCs.  Have a P4 system, full ATX, with multiple HDDs.  it is consuming (according to a plug in watt meter) about 100 watts.  I only use if for backups (not shared files or remote access).

I love the feature that my client PCs can wake up from Sleep mode and then be put back to sleep. rather than run the WHS box 24x7; I was wondering if you can schedule a task to wake up the WHS from sleep at an appointed time...do all the client backups, and then put itself back to sleep.  didn't know if WHS (server 2003) had this capability or if it worked reliably.  at 100 watts the box is only costing me about $100 a year to run but I would like to reduce that further if I can w/out sacrificing back up capability
thanks in advance for any advice or experience that others have here!

IMHO Lights Out Add-in as suggested by Olaf is the best solution.
However please note that irrespective of the method you choose you will need to disable the SBCore service to prevent your WHS from waking up automatically half an hour after you put it to sleep. The easiest way to do this is the method described by user spile1 in this thread

No. Media Center is not available for Windows Home Server. Microsoft's concept is for a central location to
store content, not to generate content. If you're watching live TV using e.g. an HDHomeRun device and your XBox 360 as an extender, network tuners in general workpoorly with extenders. This isn'ta Windows Home Server issue, I'm afraid.

    DB:3.31:Hard Drive Orientation sd

Taken from Western Digital faq:Physical mounting of the drive:
WD drives will function normally whether they are mounted sideways or upside down (any X, Y, Z orientation).
Of course, the physical design of your system may limit the positions
in which the drive can be mounted. However, in all cases, you should
mount the drive with all four screws for good grounding. Also ensure
that there is enough air space around the drive for adequate air flow,
and avoid mounting the drive near sources of excessive heat (such as
    some CPUs).Copied from Seagate support:
    Question

Can I physically install my drive sideways, upside down or vertically?

    Answer

All Seagate Maxtor's internal hard drives can be fitted sideways or upside down. As long as they can not be moved during use and get enough cooling it is irrelevant in which direction they are mounted.

Here's my question:  I would like to purchase a second APC unit just for my WHS - so I could have the option for shutting down the WHS, but I'm not sure how / if the APC Powerchute Personal Software would work on this machine.  I guess I could try to install the software by RDP-ing into the WHS, but since working outside of the console is not recommeded, I'm not sure if this would work - much less give me the abilty to configure / monitor the software from the WHS console.   Anyone have any experience with this?  Comments / suggestion are much appreciated.

qaFYI: I am looking into writing a proper APC UPS add-on for WHS that will be managed and monitored from the console.

    DB:3.27:Whs And Iis k1

Windows Home Server (WHS) and no Windows Web Server IIS
This is a response to my daughter in a classroom situation in California.
...been studying the alternatives and am lacking in knowledge about routing IP. From my reading it appears that the Windows Home Server Team do not want to support a web server on the WHS.  My WHS is up and running on(new quiet 400 euro, AMD Sempron 64 3000+ Socket AM2 CPU 512MB PC), performing as specified.  No Web Server. For Remote service, since my (newly installed T-Com German Speedport W 700V) router did not support UPnP I set WHS with a local static IP and opened 4 (3389, 80, 443, 4125) forwarding ports in the router. Remote access is operational. As I read, it is possible to set up Internet Information Server (IIS-6) and/or Citrix's Web Interface 4.5 which were both designed for Windows Server 2003 series, the WHS is based on Windows Server 2003.

My guess, since IIS-7 is a big enhancement to IIS-6 and has been released with VISTA and will be included with the Windows Server 2008/IIS 7 release, Microsoft will support IIS-7, but not on Server 2003.  The VISTA Ultimate currently supports 10 IIS-7 users for development purposes.

Again my guess, from a design perspective, the WHS does not need to be such a high powered responsive system where as the Web Server is designed to respond with many pieces of info to waiting clients.  I am sure there are major security issues between 2003 and 2008 as well.

On the in-house intranet speeds push 100 MBit/s actual.

For remote access, at home my router sits on a DSL rated 6656 kBit/s down, 640 kBit/s up connection and I can modify the router for port forwarding.  In your class room, I do not know if your IT folks will allow port forwarding.  I do have a DSL 16000 kBit/s on order, actual is much less than rated.

    comments are welcome ...Sam

DB:3.26:Cannot Connect To Whs During Pc Restore kc

I've checked the other threads without much joy.  I recently built a WHS.  Everything works well except the issue described below.  Any fresh ideas would be welcomed.During a PC restore ( a pilot test fortunately) I cannot get WHS PC restore to connect using my on board LAN (Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R/DS3 with two Realtek 8111C LANS).  WHS reports finding the hardware but can't find the server.  I have used a USB stick with the drivers saved by WHS for a restore without any success - WHS reports finding drivers for the hardware and the hardware is listed in the dialogue panel.  I have also download the correct driver and put in on a USB stick. WHS reports no drivers found.  I have disabling one of the on board LANs, WHS reports finding the correct on board LAN and the driver but can't find the server.I disabled both on board LANS, installed a PCI Gigabyte NIC (D-Link DGE-530T), WHS did not find the NIC.  I loaded the drivers and was able to restore.  From my years of troubleshooting experience (seriously I was a radar tech in the Marine Corps for 11 years and worked my way through college as an electronic repair tech for Tektronix - the oscilloscope company), the problems seems to be a mismatch between the drivers on the WHS PC restore disk (I also down loaded the latest from the website, created a disk from the ISO file with the same results.)I'm at an impasse on this one.  Any ideas?

DB:3.26:Cannot Connect To Whs During Pc Restore kc

Thanks for the suggestion.  I couldn't make it work.  It seems the WHS CD has a driver it thinks is the right one and won't install the one I loaded on to the USB stick.I did find another solution on the We Got Served website.  I pass it along in case it helps someone else.Ok so after spending all night trying to figure out why my hp laptop, connected over ethernet, would not connect: it was a driver issue. I stumbled upon a way to force the use of the proper driver for my network card.
Please bear with me as this is my first post ever, and after searching the internet for hours without any solutions, I thought I might share a possible solution at least for some people.
These instructions assume that you have an hp computer that you are trying to restore and that the SwSetup folder is available (if your computer's hd is wiped, you cant get to it, obviously, and I'm not sure where the drivers would be located on another brand of computer).
1). First, when you get to the screen that says Detect Hardware and shows the intstall drivers... button, click on the help link (the blue letters that says, Where can I find drivers for my hardware?)
2). When the help window comes up, right-click on the right window and select view source. By doing this, notepad will come up; it is through this program that you can now explore the folders and install the drivers that are already on the partition.
3). Go to file- open- then click on the computer button on the right.
4). Navigate to the Boot (X:) drive, the drive where the os on the cd is running and navigate to the following folder from there:X:\Windows\System32
5). Make sure the files of type drop down is set to all files so that you can see the .exe files
6). Right-click on taskmgr and click open
7). When you click on the networking tab, you'll see that it says No active network adapter found because none are installed yet.
8). Now mininize the taskmanager window and navigate to C:\SwSetup\NetworkThis is the folder where hp stores all the drivers needed for the computer
9). Right-click on the setup file and click open this will allow you to install the network drivers, just follow the installation window's instructions.
10). After the InstallShield Wizard is complete and you pressed finish, go back to the taskmanager window that you minimized to the bottom of the screen. You'll see that the network tab shows that the computer is now connected to the LAN.
11). Now close all the other windows, etc except for the original detect Hardware window and click continue
You should now be able to connect to your server and restore the computer. In my case I had the original motherboard driver CD and just copy the driver install package to the USB stick.  At step 8 I navigated to the USB stick, selected the self install package, the package installed, followed steps 9, 10, and 11...everything worked.  Just two notes, be sure to follow step 5...and open taskmgr and any installer files by right clicking on the file name and selecting open.  When I used File-Open from the notepad menu bar it tried to open it as a text file.Hope this helps someone. Many thanks to the person who posted this on We Got Served...

    Hello everybody!
I've read a lot about the fact that WHS won't work in a Domain. So I expect, that my home network will still be a workgroup. Right?
So if I have more than one workstation in my network, I will still have to change my password on each machine seperately (as well as on the whs), correct?
From personal (and unhappy) experience I know, that this offers a very wide field of possibel (user-) errors. Is there any tool available, to do the password changing only once with effect on every connected machine?

    DB:3.22:Whs - Hard Drive Dies 7p

So lets say I have a WHS with 12 drives and one of them starts going bad.  Typically (non-WHS) I can tell when one is bad because the drive will stop responding when copying files, SMART will popup, I will have trouble starting windows,  or blue screen.  I will then remove the drive, hook it up to another PC, and I can usually get most if not all the data off the drive before it goes completely dead.  I then run hard drive diagnostics from the drive manufacturer to determine if they consider it bad.  Once a drive has behaved badly I junk it regardless of the manufacturer's prognosis.
With WHS data is stored all over the place.  Assuming mirroring is turned off.  Is it possible to tell which drive a file is on?  Is it possible to remove a drive and hook it up to another pc to recover data?  Has anyone used special recovery software or tools?  Does WHS have the ability to detect a bad drive?  How does it learn of the bad drive and how will it react?  Does it over react to a bad sector or does it have the ability to self heal the partition?  It would be neat if WHS could determine through SMART or some other fasion if a drive is going bad, inform the user to install a new drive of equal or greater size, and transfer the data from the bad drive to the new one, and instruct the user to remove the bad drive for disposal or RMA.
I understand that we can get this through mirroring.  Has anyone experience a drive failure with mirroring enabled?  Was it as simple as removing and installing a new drive?  How were you notified?
Thanks for any feedback.  I'm planing with WHS in a VM until my hardware shows up this week.  I'll post back any of my results.
    Jon

    DB:3.22:Whs - Hard Drive Dies 7p

The files on each drive are stored in a standard NTFS partition, so yes, you can plug your drive into another PC to attempt to rescue the data, or run other data recovery tools on it.
I staged a drive failure by shutting down the WHS, removing one of my drives and booting up. Sure enough it was flagged as bad in the console then I removed the drive from the storage pool in the console.
Another reboot later and my drive was plugged back in, flagged as not being part of the storage pool, and was available to me using remote desktop into the WHS as an additional drive letter, and I copied the data back onto the shares, and re-initialised the drive into the storage pool.

As we all knew and expected, Microsoft released the Widnows Search 4.0 desktop feature through automatic updates earlier this week.  I have unstalled it on all my clients and have been quite pleased with its performance.  The WHS server through RDP and the windows update application indicates there is a version for Windows Server 2003 available as optional update (KB940157).  I never install any optional updates on the WHS, but I wonder if there is any reason to make this an exception.  As with a lot of WHS users, we do a lot of searches against the data files and shares on the WHS from clients.  Would the install of Search 4.0 on the WHS be of any benefit?  Or is likely to cause more problems?

Any real experience or thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks,

    DB:3.21:Windows Search 4.0 pf

    Bill,
    It depends!

If you store a lot of information on your server, in the form of documents etc., which you need to search, then yes. It means that Clients' with this feature, can include the server folders in their search operations. However, if you use WHS as just a storage/media player type system, then there is no great advantage to installing it.
I believe some people found problems with server slowdowns etc., but I have it installed on both a production and test server, with absolutely no problems.

Right now, I'm using a HP Workstation as my WHS machine since WHS doesn't require a real server to carry out its functions.

However, I have a HP ProLiant server at home that I want to put to good use since it's just sitting around. I'm not quite sure exactly where to begin with it since I'm new to the whole server world. WHS was like a gateway into introducing me about servers from XP and Vista.

I suppose the first thing I need to figure out is what OS to use on the ProLiant. My only experience with a server operating system is WHS so I figured I'd ask around here first.

I'd like to use the ProLiant as either a dedicated server of some type or more preferably as a game server, since I am a big gamer. I'm not sure which server OS would be the best for a game server though or if WHS would even be a possibility.

It may be even more ideal if I could use the ProLiant as both my Windows Home Server and my game server. That way I would not have to keep a separate machine on for both.

Any suggestions, guidelines, or ideas are greatly appreciated since as I said before I'm new to the whole server world.

I use Server 2003 standard edition in a couple of game servers. Both running 2 opteron 2220's and 4 gigs of kingston ddr2 667 registered ECC ram. I find the set-up to be very stable and easy to admin. Now my servers are located in data centers so that I can have the bandwith to host multiple 64 player servers. Being that I am no where near the data center I use Radmin for full desktop control and Firedeamon to run my processes as a windows service. All in all, this works very well for me and is easy to do to boot.

You can only run these two products for external access with two IP addresses, or a TMG server in front. Exchange doesn't like using non standard ports either.

Sorry if this question seems really basic, but I'm trying to understand a little better how a client computer, running say XP Home, would interact with the WHS box.  I have experince with several networked computers running XP Home and Pro, but no experience with Server 2003.
I understand that there's the WHS console applet which is how some of the more admin-like functions would work (i.e. backup).  But how would a typical application on the client find the WHS box?
Without WHS:  For example say there are two computers (Bart and Lisa) on the network and both run XP.  Lisa stores ripped DVD's.  Her directories have been shared.  Bart can see the folders and their contents.  He can browse in typical Windows fashion from My Network Places either from Windows Explorer, or from within the Open dialog of an application.  If Bart wanted to watch a DVD he could open the file from within his DVD player app by browsing to Lisa or he could find the file manually by browsing Lisa from within Windows Explorer.  Bart can also map the DVD folder on Lisa to his media front-end software (during setup) so that DVDs are available for playback without having to browse and find the files everytime.
With WHS:  This is where I am uncertain.  Assuming that ripped DVDs (or other media) have been now stored on WHS box.  Does Bart access the files in the same way that he did with Lisa?  What gives me pause is the death of the drive letter thing.  How does Bart find the WHS box and the contents?  Is access still via typical Windows network browsing?
I use BeyondMedia as media front-end software running on my HTPC (running XP) and have all media (DVDs, music, photos) sitting on a server box (also running XP).  I have mapped the directories on the server into BeyondMedia.  If I switch the server box to WHS, will BeyondMedia still be able to map into the location on the WHS box where the files are stored?

that time on it is only a small incremental backup which can be once, twice or even 3 times daily, which ever way you decide. Then if something really catastrophic happens you can get the FULL backup sent overnite to you. Personally I do Tape and Hard Drives
    and rotate everything out.

First, kudos to Microsoft for taking the time to release PP1 when it was good-n-ready.  My manually installation experience went flawlessly and I'm now seeing some performance improvements (on my HP MSS).  Its unfortunate that HP decided to push Anti-Virus and PVConnect on existing MSS (512MB RAM) customers.  I can understand perhaps why Anti-Virus would be valuable as there isn't a built-in Anti-Virus capability in WHS.  However, PVConnect seems like just a temporary solution (if you can call it that) until Microsoft/WHS Team updates the media sharing/streaming capabilities in WHS.  My suggestion to MSS customers, stay away from these add-ins unless you are willing to do a RAM upgrade for HP MSS.  I have a gut feeling that HP will do a hardware refresh for MSS later this and probably will include 1GB minimum.  At least, I hope so for the sake of their future customers and WHS public image.

Now that PP1 has been released, does anyone know if Microsoft/WHS Team had been developing future WHS releases in parallel to PP1?  Or was PP1 more of an all hands on deck type of effort?  If it was the later, I'd like to suggest that the WHS Team skip a PP2 release and focus on v2.  I would think that getting the kernel in sync with WS2008/Vista is a top priority...not just from a maintenance point of view but also to implement the latest in media sharing/streaming.

    DB:3.15:Pp1, Hp And Post Pp1 9d

Kariya, I'm not looking for announcements or insight to their roadmap/plans...what I'm trying to determine is if the WHS Team had been able to get any future (non-PP1) work done during the last 6 months.  Why is it relevant...well I consider Microsoft to have a lead in this product category and want to see them maintain this.  Its more of a reassurance that WHS is firing on all cylinders and move onward/upward.

DB:3.13:Network Connecting From Win7 To Windows Home Server sm

I have developed a problem validating to my WHS from my Win7 (64bit) desktop over a workgroup (not a domain). Initially I had no problems I could map drives, browse, and connect to my remote printers on the WHS box. Recently, perhaps 2 weeks ago, I became
unable to connect to the WHS. when I'd try to map a drive on the server I would get asked for credentials. When I apply the credentials the connection would fail and advise that the id or password was incorrect. I then would enter the box\username and the
password; it would think for a moment and then return with the same error. The login and password are correct as I can access the WHS directly.I have a couple of other WinXP machines available and I can map to those machines with no problems, also I can
map from those machines to my WHS.

I believe that this may have something to do with homegroups on Win7. I was experimenting and I think requested to establish a homegroup. Since then I've been unable to connect.

I've tried establishing another ID on both the Win7 and WHS boxes and still no good. I changed the workgroup and still no good. I've tried trouble shooting and the only thing I've seen that seems to be a problems is when I run the network trouble shooter it
reports that "Your user account doesn't have permissions to access public" (public is the folder I'm trying to access. When I check on the WHS the permissions on the public share I have given my id specifically full control on the share.

I have googled and poked arount the web and have seen quite a number of similar problems and the all seem to be associated with homegroups. Is there something with homegroups that modifies the credentials to only work with other homegroup boxes? This is
very frustrating as I can't pring conveniently and I have been using the WHS as a central storage site for a number of folders that I need to access from any of my machines and now I can't get to them from my Win7 machine.

One last thing - when I set up Win7 I set it up in a dual boot arrangement. I can still boot my Vista machine and when I do I have no problems in connecting to the WHS.

I would really appreciate it if anyone has had this same experience and has found a fix.

    TIA
    Brian

DB:3.13:Network Connecting From Win7 To Windows Home Server sm

All,just found my problem - a shot to the foot! ouch!

I had turned my firewall off and WHS was warning me so when I logged on WHS console I noticed everything was green (except the firewall) but the last backup was January 21, today is February 21 so why no backups??? Duh check the date and sure enough the day
and time were right on but the month was January instead of February.

There is a lesson here though - when checking connection problems be aware that the date/time needs to be correct (there is a little wiggle room but not too much)

LESSON LEARNED! Thanks to anyone who may have spent some time thinking about this.

Assuming by backup you mean the server backup functionality built into Windows Home Server V1, the backups are just files (or hard links to files) in the file system of the backup disk. There's nothing magical about them; you can copy them anywhere you
like. Windows Home Server 2011 will not, however, recognize it as a backup disk, so copying from the backup to your server will require manual intervention.I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

I would judge the answer to that to be no. The Restore CD is based on the 32 bit Windows Vista version of of the Windows Preinstallation Environment, also known as WinPE 2.0. This version can't load 64 bit device drivers. Microsoft
would have to create a second, 64 bit, Restore CD, with all the associated testing, adaptation of code, etc. and I honestly don't think they will invest the resources required.

Hi Ken, I don't think that Serial to USB converter works with APC products. The serial cable that comes with the units is not a real serial cable, it has crossed wires. Hi,

Last night I tried to download the PP1 restore CD (some 250MB msi file) using Firefox3.0 and MetaProducts Download Express  v1.9 (http://www.metaproducts.com/mp/metaproducts_download_express.htm). I set it to download straight to a share on my WHS with 32 download instances. Download Express locked up at 99%. It also locked up my client PC. I have to do a forced shutdown (Ctrl+Shutdown) to reset my client PC. After the client PC restart I found that WHS is also locked up. I can't access it remotely either through the console nor RDP. I tried to shut WHS down by using the power button (it was set to power down when power button is pressed and it always worked) also to no veil. At the end I have to turn off WHS box by press and hold the power button. I then turned on WHS again and it worked fine after some a few minutes heavy HDD activity.

Download Express left a partially downloaded file in the share which I deleted it after WHS is restarted. I then started another download to my client PC and it worked fine.

This is the first time I have the WHS or locked by an aplication on client PC. It have been working fine in the past without any serious problems.

Any one ever had such experience? Is it worth filing any bug report or something?

    My configurations are as follows:

    WHS:
PP1 NOT installed but up to date with all other updates
    CPU: AMD64 3000+
    MB: MSI Neo-V
    RAM: 1.5GB DDR400
    HDD: IDE 300GB (SYS) + 120GB, SATA 200GB + 500GB

    Client PC:

Avast! antivirus home edition v4 on client PC only.

    Both on wired 100MB network.

DB:3.12:Whs Locked Up By Metaproducts Download Express xf

It 'should be'. If WHS sees a file open, it should just bypass that file and go onto the next one.
However some programs don't appear to operate a perfect 'exclusive lock' on a file, (Microsoft Money is a popular example!), so when other programs try to access them, you end up with both trying to work on it.
Have you tried moving the destination folder outside the storage pool, and then just running RoboCopy or similar on completion of the download?

I agree that the underlying Server 2003 shouldn't, and probably wouldn't worry about it, but the file operations are basically nothing to do with it, they are all controlled by the WHS portion.
Have you tried a different download program to see if the same thing happens?

I'm having an odd issue that I've only noticed since installing RC1 of WHS. When I'm playing City of Heroes on my Vista PC and the WHS had been on, or is on, at some point since my Vista PC had been started, my computer will randomly have about 2-4 seconds of high HDD activity and my game will become unresponsive during that time.If I shut off WHS, and reboot my Vista PC, the game runs as expected, no problems. I typically leave my WHS off, because it doesn't like to sleep, or go into a low power state for long, and I'm not a big fan of wasting electricity. So, normally, my Vista PC plays fine. It's only when I have/had WHS running that I notice this issue in game.I'm not sure if the 2-4 second lockup occurs out of the game, and City of Heroes is the only game I've played since installing RC1 on the PC.I'm mainly wondering if anyone else has experience anything at all like this? Figured I'd check with the community before delving further into the issue.

It seems I am having a few issues with WHS currently. I can't remove drives (Invalid error) from the HD pool, can't run backups (backup service isn't running) and more. It's odd that I'm having a LOT more issues with RC1 then any previous install. Also, when I hit the power button, the WHS just reboots (even though Power button is indeed set to Shut Down) and sometimes when I run the Shut Down command from the console it reboots too.Finally.. I can't run SFC! It asks me to insert the Service Pack 2 disk, and I put the WHS install DVD into the CD drive, and point to it, but it says that's the wrong disk... awesome.Sucks that the download site for WHS doesn't list the MD5 value of the image. My burning software verifies the image MD5 and that of the burned MD5, but doesn't help to verify that the image downloaded correctly, since there is no MD5 value on the site. Which means, Yet Another One Use Program...Anyone have the MD5 for the download?

Hello! finally got around to running WHS through its paces. Glad to be part of the beta! Hopefully i can contribute to its success. Just a little about me I am currently a Windows/Unix/Linux SA with going on 10+ years of experience with Microsoft Operating systems and 8 years of Unix and Unix like operating systems. I have WHS installed on a AMD Athlon 64 2800+ with 1gb of ram and two Samsung ATA6 250GB hard drives all connected to my HDTV. Just wanted to add my initial 2 cents about my WHS experience (understanding this is beta software).
Ø  Installation: 32GB drive requirement? I can't understand why they would limit this. It prevented me from using my uber fast albeit slightly old 18gb U160 SCSI drives as the boot partition and my 250GB drives as the data area. Then to find out that WHS automatically created a 10gb partition and installed 5gb worth of data doh! . IMHO this is a poor design but I am sure someone somewhere has a reason for this (would really like to hear it).

Ø  Backups: Need a little better documentation took me a little while to figure out I needed client software to use the backup features. Wasn’t obvious that this was a client/server situation.
    ·         Would be nice to have a button to push the WHS software package to client PC's integrated into the WHS console.
    ·         When backups run at least one machine became so slow as to be unusable.
    ·         When multiple clients are queued for manual backups once one finishes the other one does not start.
Other then these few annoyances WHS appears to be shaping up to be an extremely useful piece of software!

DB:3.09:Some Initial Observations And Introduction 7m

Yep, this is the question I am also trying to get a clear answer to.  Seems to make no sense to have the OS drive share backups.  When I keep reading that if you update your system disc, or replace it, all your back ups are gone and you have to redue them all is not very attractive.

This set up has worked absolutely fineusing WMP to listen to tracks on my desktop for ages however I recently changed my router to the Belkin N750(the only change made to my set up) and since then when playing music I experience random stoppages
of music for a few seconds and then it starts up again.
Does anyone have an ideas what this could be?
My internet connectionis fine and if I play music from Amazons cloud player I don't experience this issue.

My evaluation thus far has consisted of three to four hour long backup sessions, something Acronis True image can do with the click of one button and in 15 to 20 minutes.  I have eight personal PC's in my home and another dozen or so in two business locations, twenty PC's in all running currently.  So, in three days of usage of my WHS trial period, I have managed to back up a grand total one one computer.  This is ALL WHS does?  A simple backup that I can do in 15 minutes otherwise?  I would like to try the 'remote access' feature with several of my Vista 64 sytems, but the instructons are as confusing as a nucleur physics compound question?  More imporantly, is it possible load up anything OTHER than a system backup on the WHS?  Like a movie, some pictures, etc. and actually access them?  I mean what formula is needed to put a file on the WHS and have access to it?  How do I load a file to share on to WHS?  I know I'll get beaten with a stick for this, but so far my experience with WHS is well...useless?  And I have a lot of computers with a lot of important business information to back up.  Three to four hours to backup a single computer?  Then, how do I put anything on the WHS OTHER than a simple back up of one of my systems?  I would like to put some picture files and a movie on my WHS trial.  How?  gentlemen...?

This is one of the reasons for it's beta status, they hope they have fixed this problem, but obviously there might be combinations that Microsoft hadn't covered.
It's up to you, if you can afford to loose data - i.e. you have it stored somewhere else as well - then by all means try to use Offline Files after you have installed PP1. If your data isn't duplicated, then there might be an outside chance that there could be problems, so you should wait until final release.

DB:3.07:Beta 2 Whs System Upgrade To Ctp Whs On New Hardware - Successful! ad

I have a new system, with a new primary drive (drive 1 or C D), that I am going to install WHS CTP on. My current WHS beta 2 system has 6 hard drives.

After reading a number of posts and documentation I believe there is a way for me to upgrade from beta 2 to CTP at the same time as I introduce my new system and maintain all of my user files (music, photos, video, backups and username files). I understand that I will need to recreate user accounts.

    These are the steps I believe I need to follow;

backup all files on WHS beta 2 system to storage other than WHS
install hard drives 2-6 from my old hardware to my new system in the same order i.e. IDE1, drive on first connector, drive on second connector, etc
install WHS CTP on my new system by selecting the server reinstallation option.
WHS should install the CTP version on the new primary drive and then rebuild the tombstones that will allow the user files on disks 2-6 to be seen.
Appreciate any feedback from folks who have experience or knowledge with this that can validate or correct the steps I need to take.

DB:3.07:Beta 2 Whs System Upgrade To Ctp Whs On New Hardware - Successful! ad

Here are the steps I took to achieve a successful upgrade from WHS beta 2 to WHS CTP and introuducing a new system in the process.

My WHS beta 2 system was a HP D530 CMT, which was a very capable machine (supported 4 PATA 2 SATA drives in a very well built chassis, see this post for more information) though as I understood the power of WHS my plans expanded and I needed more space for drives and wanted to load applications. I could have upgraded the HP D530 but a quick analysis showed that I could build a new system at a reasonable cost, $459, that would serve me much better. See this post for the specs on my new system. I also made my stepson happy by using the HP D530 as an interim machine while I wait until Apple gets their act together on their new OS and buy him a Mac mini in October.

    Here are the steps I took;

I backed all my WHS data, that I couldn't afford to lose, to an external source that was not part of my WHS system
installed all my hard drives from my old hardware to my new hardware in the same positions e.g. IDE1, drive 1, drive 2
started my new system,  booting from WHS CTP installation DVD
The CTP installation check saw this as an existing system and give me the option of doing a reinstallation or a new installation
I selected reinstallation and after 2 hours I had WHS CTP installed on my new system
All my user files, video, music and photos were there, though no backups or user settings which was expected.
My next step is to upgrade my system hard drive as I needed some more storage and purchased a 320 GB SATA which should be a little faster for a system drive than the PATA drive I was using. I did experiment to see if I could have accomplished this step in the above process but in order to get the reinstallation option, the WHS CTP installation process had to see my system drive. I have done some research and upgrading the system hard drive will be a similar process to the beta 2/CTP upgrade in as much as the system drive is completely rebuilt.

I plan to replace my 2 year old homebuilt WHS with a new Acer WHS. I have several backups of old machines that I'd like to keep and migrate to the new WHS. Is there a straightforward way to do this?

This is exactly what I was looking for!  One additional question:  I don't have an external hard drive large enough to save a copy of the backup database (they are all attached to the current WHS...yikes!). Is there any way to do this over the network while both WHS boxes are on the network?
Although unsupported, you could probably copy the entire backup database folder from your old server to one of the shares (\\server\[sharename]) on your new server.  Then disable the appropriate services on the new server as mentioned in the technical brief Ken linked you to before.  Once you've done that, you should be able to move the contents of the database folder from your server share on your new server to D:\folders\{000......} on your new server.  NOTE:  It is extremely important that when you move the database from the share on your new server to it's final location (D:\folders\{000....}), you access the the database folder by using the UNC path (\\server\[sharename]) to access the database folder on the new server.  Do not try to move anything from D:\shares.

Copy share to share using any client computer (this will be fairly slow, as the data needs to flow
fromserver A to the client, then toserver B), or log in to one server or the other using a desktop connection (Remote Desktop or physically connected monitor etc.) and copy share to share that way. Or shut down

Have the server setup with 1.7Tb of space and did not lose any data during the upgrade.

The most important thing is to ensure to run the upgrade from boot up and not from within the OS as this will only update the WHS not the SBS Server 2003 to the full version. This will mean that the OS will expire in December some time.

Ensure when u upgrade to select Server Reinstall not instal a new OS as this will delete all the data on your HDD. Server reinstall will only format the System Drive.

After upgrade you will need to set up all users again but their individual private shares are retained.  Any WHS Add-Ins that you have installed will need to be reinstalled but if they are saved to the software folder are not deleted and can be reinstalled from the WHS Consol.

With WHIIST Addin any websites that you have setup are also kept and can be reassigned to the same folder after reinstalling the addin.

I have been using WHS via the Acer Aspire easyStore - H340 offering for about the past 6 months. Very pleased with it so far. However, I recently received a critical alert saying that the anti-virus software (McAfee Total Protection)
was out of date but when I tried to update I discovered that McAfee have withdrawn all support for the product. I guess that others have had the same alert. What would people recommend as a replacement product. I have seen that Avast have a product. Does anybody
have any experience about this product? From doing a bit of internet digging around I see that removing theMcAfee product for WHS is not straightforward. Is there an approved step-by-step guide to do this?
The versionof WHSinstalled ondescribed in the Console as WHS with Power Pack 3 and the individual components are as described below. I see that MS have released a new WHS product called WHS 2011. Is there a simple upgrade to this
or is it not worth bothering with. Finally, I have purchased a separate hard disk to back up the server. Is there an auto backup utility available or is something like Synctoy appropriate to use.

This is gonna be kind of long and complicated, sorry. The OS on my WHS got corrupted within an hour of whenthe PC drive where I store my photos failed. WHS had previously made a backup of the failed PC drive. To save the WHS backup of the failed PC drive, instead of rebuilding WHS on the drive with the corrupt OS, I bought a new drive and rebuilt WHS from scratch (it's an HP LX195 if it matters). I then bought a hard drive enclosure to connect the original WHS drive to the fresh installvia USB. I wiped the SYS partition on the old WHS drive that contained the corrupted filesso it only has the DATApartition withall of the original subfolders and files. When I look at the hard drives on WHS via the remote console it shows C:SYS, D:DATA, and F:DATA the latter being the files from the old WHS drive now connected via USB.I thought saving the backupwould be as simple as copying the files in the {00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4} folder from F: to D:but not so much. I'm getting the error "Cannot copy XPS730X-1.C.VolumeClusterLatest3.4096: The file cannot be accessed by the system." I played around with the permissions but that's not it. I did a search and it appears the cure is to reset the tags via the CMD prompt but that wouldn't solve my problem. There's got to be some way to save my backup. If it was just PC files and docs I would just chalk it up to experience. I lost my significant other in March and there's years of pictures in that backup that can't be replaced. Somebody help.

The Home Computer Backup and Restore technical brief includes information about how to back up and restore the backup database. You should probably start there. BulatS's tip below is also a good one, as the actual files will have been in D:\DE\Folders\etc if you had multiple disks in your server.

I don't think I checked when running Windows 7 Pro (64) but now with Windows 8 Pro (64), while debugging other issues, I noticed Launchpad.exe always using 5-12% of the cpu, and I havepretty powerful quad processor. Makes no difference
if the server is online, or not. I have another Windows 7 64 PC and an XP Home PC on my network/server, andlaunchpad behaves'normally' so this may be a Windows 8 versus WHS 2011 issue. Any experience with this? 10% of a high end
pc makes me worry about what it is doing.

DB:3.03:Whs 2011 Launchpad Cpu Consumption Windows 8 jx

    I can confirm this issue.
I am running Windows 8 Pro 64-Bit as client and WHS 2011 as server and on both systems I have installed the latest updates. On Windows 8 Launchpad.exe is causing a constant CPU usage. According to Process Explorer it is always at ~3%. I did not notice a
CPU usage like this previously with Windows 7.

DB:3.03:Slow Upload Speed From My Whs 19

I just installed a WHS and uploaded pics etc today.  Then I created a remote account for a friend.  When he download the pictures he only reach about 64kb/s... .  He have fibercable with 100mbits/s.
My up speed is 20mbit/s and down 100mbit.
Is there any limitation in WHS????   Anyone with same experience or any nice advice what to do., As it is today the remote acces is useless.
    Many thanks in advance!

DB:3.03:Slow Upload Speed From My Whs 19

I am downloading stuff on a daily basis from internet with about 8mbit/s.  Of course this is not necassary, but I do at least expect this WHS server to be able to perform 1mbit/s.   Otherwise the remote functionality is about 10 years behind its time. It is not possible to share files today if the speed is below 1mbit. An 800mb document/SW takes up to 12 hours. Many thanks for your feedback anyway.   I understand it as you do not know about any build in limitations in WHS.
Yes, but downloading is completely different than uploading.  Typical upload speeds (at least in the USA) for a residential internet package are 256 Kb/s or 768 Kb/s, while download speeds are upwards of 10Mb/s.  So when he is downloading a file from your server, your server is uploading the file.  So that upload is, as I said, fairly normal.

Is the search feature here broken or is it just me?  I tried to search 'restore' here looking just in WHS and I got results from all over the board.  I was hoping to share my experience in an existing thread, but found no joy.My TiVo gets me.

    DB:3.02:Search Broken? ap

Yes, search is a bit messed up. I would suggest you post about this in the bug reporting forum. :) I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

DB:3.02:Saving The Media Library To Whs - Help Needed Please c7

    Hi all,

First off, merry christmas and a happy new year to all and everyone, hope your all enjoying yourselves

I am having trouble saving my library to my WHS (windows home server)

I have the shares setup on the server and have a seperate account created specifically for the entertainer named Entertainer and it has its own password. The EVA plays all my AVI's, MP3,'s and views all my pictures via the WHS so i know the connection isn't a problem.

However when i try to save the library to the WHS, it pops up the old message unable to save to this location or whatever the exact saying it.

I think, by reading other post, that its something to do with the security policies on the WHS but i can't seem to work it out.

Does anyone have any experience with this and could any shed some light on what i could try.

    Many thanks to all

    BB

DB:3.02:Whs Vail Client Pc Rdp Settings d8

When I connect to one of my PC's via the RDP Gateway the WHS Vail Web Console provides, the RDP settings are awful (reminiscent of the lowest desktop experience preset - 56k)
At one point I was able to browse the client-end RDP settingsafter installing the connector software, I believe it was somewhere in or around the launchpad... I've been hunting for said settings only to find anger and frustration. Does anyone know
    off-hand where the settings are?
The interface stylingwas identical to the WHS console and it listed all the presets. I'm definitely not talking about the experience presets under mstsc - experience, as the settings which I specify there do not apply to the RDP gateway session
    which WHS vail is hosting.
    Client is 7 Pro x64
    Thanks

    DB:3.02:Benchmarking Whs za

There are lots of questions around here regarding the performance of WHS.  It ranges from will it run on my 8080 Altair to why is my dual quad-core Xeon server so dang slow.
As we gain more experience with WHS, it seems that a set of formal benchmarks would be very useful.  People interested in building streaming servers could predict how much money they need to spend.  You could use it to determine if there's a problem in your frankenmachine if its perfomance is out of line for the class of machine.  Novices could predict how the old desktop in the garage would perform.
I'm sure that the WHS Team has done this, but I'm guessling that it would probably take work to 'productize' it enough to make it available.  Any comments, Team?
Assuming that a formal benchmarking procedure isn't going to happen anytime soon, my question is can we collaborate and develop some benchmarks by the members of this forum?
I don't think this is an easy problem.  First, good benchmarks are difficult in general to develop.  Second, nearly everything that you would want to benchmark on WHS is a client-server operation.  This means that the benchmark has to cover the client, network, and WHS server.  Challenging.
    What do you think?

Great idea!  And indeed a tough problem!
I'm not sure we'll be able to do this but we'll add it to the list of cool things we should do :).

DB:3.01:Can Whs Myweb.Homeserver.Com Have A Subfolder Redirect To Another Webserver? cm

My WHS is configured to update its address to the xxxx.homeserver.com domain and I'm able to access it just fine over the Internet. I would like to add an additional webserver (on another computer running Apache) and set it up so that if I were to
browse to http://xxxx.homeserver.com/secondServer that it would send the requests to my box running Apache. I'm guess that this is something that can be done with the IIS configuration on the WHS but that's purely a guess. Does anyone have any
experience with this or can you offer any pointers?
I'm assuming that another option would be to just set up a different dynamic DNS service for the other box but I was hoping to leverage the WHS in place.

In your router, if you don't enable http (port 80) for your WHS, then you can enable it for secondserver. Just use https (port 443) for WHS (which is what I do anyway).

Or you could change the port Apache listens on to (say) 81 and do

    http://xxxx.homeserver.com:81
