When you press and hold on any message you should see the options for "Copy" and "More". Tap more and should see little circles appear next to each message with a blue check mark when you tap a message. The message you press should already have a blue check mark next to it. Along with that the trash can should be at the bottom. If that's not happening then you've got something else going on...and maybe a restore is in order...

Why, using Consoleone, to expire and reduce ONLY trash older than 30

days, do other saved messages (that are NOT trash and are in special

    folders) get DELETED?

    Users are screaming.

    DB:3.14:Thread: Mailbox/Library Maintenance Deleting Files 87

Well, before I get the dreaded automatic reply, this seems to be a

function of the forced archiving or files not working. There was a similar

post months ago that went unanswered.

What appears to be happening is that users are set to archive to a

non-network local disk. Manual archives go to this location. But system

wide archiving does not work. Instead of archiving the files get deleted.

So it probably is not that a system level call to delete trash is deleting

messages, it is the failure of the archiving to work is putting messages

in trash and then they are being purged.

If this is only a problem for our system, and a few others, I guess it is

    too bad for us.

I'm sorry to say, unless you download them to your computer (using thunderbird) and are a master at restoring data from parts of your hard drive that is counted pretty much as dead space or can take it to a data restore place (both ways your chances are slim at best), you have to say goodbye to your messages.

    Hello everyone,

Why does Mail (Desktop) have TWO Trash folders? I only have MobileMe IMAP account setup (so there's no POP business here :o)). Despite of this single account setup, the folder structure seems confusing. At the very top on the left pane we have MAILBOXES which contain Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash. Under Trash, I have two folders one is the local Trash and the other myusername@mac.com - what is the significance of these? Under Mail Preferences - Accounts - Mailbox Behaviors - Trash, I have both checkboxes checked (Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox Store deleted messages on the server), junk mail is set to send messages to the Trash.

Add mystery confusion to the above, I also have another category in the left pane named after my account (username@mac.com. Under this I have a folder which I have setup (I set this up to be on my myusername@mac.com as opposed to On My Mac). That part is obvious. But what is that Deleted Messages folder doing here? I did not create this manually. Essentially Mail is telling me that this is a user added folder that exists on the server (at MobileMe). I see this Deleted Messages on the server too. What causes the creation of this folder? (Over there I have "Move deleted messages to the [Trash]" option enabled under Preferences)

I tried deleting the Deleted Messages folder online and my desktop Mail threw away its default Trash icon! I had nowhere to throw my trash. (although this was resolved after waiting for a while and relaunching Mail).

Can anyone shed some light on this? Just like my Mac, I'd like to keep things neat and simple. I'd like to have a single Trash can (it's too much work emptying two Trash cans in addition to the household trash :o)), not to mentioned the third Deleted Messages!

Have you checked your deletion schedules to see if the Inbox is set the way you want it? From either the Preview or Inbox pages, go to PreferencesEmailEmail Deletion Schedules to check.

Also------Assuming that you are in either your Primary, or an unrestricted Secondary account----------- Click on either "Account" or My Account" at the top of your screen, depending on which page you are on at the moment. It should ask you to sign in again. When you have done so, it should take you to a page with four tabs at the top that say "Overview", "Billing and Payments", "My Services", and "Users and Preferences". Click on "Users and Preferences" if it's not open already, and you should see another page with your name and address, account number and other things. You should see two tabs----"Basic Settings", and to the right of it ------"Email Settings". Click on that and you will see several choices including the Safe List. If it's enabled the button will be green. When the Safe List is enabled, the only emails that will go to your Inbox will be from addresses you deliberately put on that list manually. Nothing else will get through. So if it's turned on, you need to turn it off.

    Hi,

I\'ve got a user who likes using Outlook on our Groupwise system. We have GW 7 installed. He\'s been running Outlook 2003 with the connector for about a year.

Recently, he informed me that his Deleted Items folder was missing. I looked to see if he had moved it, and apparently he has not. I logged into our Web Access, and the Trash folder was there. I logged in using a standard GW client, and the Trash folder was there, listing around 6,000 deleted messages. Looks like they are all there.

I updated his connector to the SP2 version, and that didn\'t help. I installed Outlook 2003 on a different computer, then installed the connector, and we see the same thing - no Trash folder.

The folder is obviously still there, since my GroupWise client can see it and interact with it, but I\'m stumped. My next step is to try a few older versions of the connector. Any other suggestions?

DB:2.99:Thread: Gw Connector - Deleted Items Missing In Outlook, Not In Gw. 1k

I answered my own question here...

The problem was that the user\'s Trash folder was not at the root level of the email account. Outlook did not know how to deal with that. I found the user\'s trash folder in GroupWise and moved it to the root level. I opened Outlook and waited 5 min. for Outlook to realize what had happen. Voila! a trash (deleted items) folder with the correct icon appeared.

    Hope this helps someone.

Using the Finder, go to Home Library Mail this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account).

Within a POP account named folder for Jaguar or Panther Mail should be mbox files with an .mbox extension, a MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded file and NO folders.

Confirm there is a Junk.mbox file and not a Junk named folder. If a Junk folder, quit the Mail.app first and change the name of the Junk folder to Junk.mbox or add the .mbox extension.

Launch Mail and this should resolve the problem.

This can occur with Jaguar or Panther Mail when changing Junk from Automatic to Training and back to Automatic which you should never do since there is no reason or benefit gained when doing so.

I have an IMAP account with JustHost. I'm confused about how to set it up on the iPhone so that deleted and sent messages are stored on the server in the same folder they would be stored in if I deleted or sent them from Mail.app. JustHost include this particular instruction for Mail.app:

+Mac Mail IMAP Note: The "IMAP Path Prefix" needs to be set to INBOX otherwise Mail.app will not be able to store deleted, draft or sent mail on the server. click for more info+

I did this in Mail and it seems to be working well. But do I also have to include this prefix in the settings for this account on the iPhone?

And do I need to "map" the Sent, Trash and Drafts mailboxes to particular folders in the Settings Account Advanced panel? Right now it's very confusing because on my Mac this is what I see:

See how there's still a "Sent" and "Trash" folder under BMA.com way down at the bottom? Why? Almost all of my sent and deleted messages from this account appear in the "Sent" and "Trash" folders at the top underneath the Sent and Trash icons.

On my iPhone I see something similar. At the top there's an Inbox, Drafts, Sent and Trash folder with the special icons for each; then underneath that there are "Deleted Messages", "Drafts" and "Sent" folders that just look like normal folders. However, the problem here is that most of my deleted and sent messages are actually in those folders, not the ones up top.

    Ach, so confused!

Sorry for delay in replying. I don't use the Mac Mail App so I had to check what happended if I connected it to my mail service. I also have two Sent and Trash folders. I would think that the top ones are on my MacBook and the other on my mail service provider's server. The advantage of having both is that I could access Sent and Deleted messages even if I didn't have an internet connection.

Try either manually mapping these folders on your iPhone settings or sync via iTunes and see if your messages appear in these folders as well. MobileMe will not sync mailbox settings on non-MobileMe mail accounts.

Firefox doesn't do email, it's strictly a web browser.

If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.

If your problem is with Mozilla Thunderbird, please Tag this thread as being for Thunderbird in the right-hand column of this page. This question currently is in the Firefox queue for answers.

You said your relative had saved the messages in the Trash folder. If that's the case, anything older than 30 days will be permanently gone. 30 days is the max you can keep anything in there. That includes the contents of any folders that were created as a sub-folder of Trash. At least that's the official version of things.

I have IMAP access to a Gmail account with Outlook 2013 from Microsoft Office Home Business2013 on Windows 7. (In addition, I have an iPad and an iPhone that accesses this same Gmail account.) I'm beginning to see the same e-mail message in the Trash
folder replicated anywhere from ten to twenty times. They all have the same time stamp. But when I go to Gmail with a web browser, the replicated messages do not appear in the Trash folder. I permanently delete all the replicated messages in the Trash.

Six hours later, I go over a second computer set aside for experimenting and I install Outlook 2013 from Microsoft Office Professional 2014 and access the same Gmail account using IMAP. After waiting for the subscribed folders to synchronize, I see a new
message replicated twenty times with the same time in the Trash folder, but it does not appear in gmail.com.

So then I uninstall Outlook 2013 and delete the .ost files and install the older version of Outlook 2010. After setting up the same Gmail account with IMAP access and synchronizing the folders, I get a newer e-mail replicated thirty times in the Trash folder

What is causing this to happen?

All the messages disappeared from the inbox. The sent box is fine but messages deleted from the inbox don't appear in the trash folder.

A search of the Inbox for messages of size 0 allows me to see the messages and to reply to them.
If I move a message to another folder the moved message is invisible there but search finds it.

Deleted messages are in the trash folder but cannot be seen. A search of the trash folder finds them.

Messages in search boxes allow use (reply, delete) but attempting to delete a selected list of messages in the search box does nothing.

DB:2.84:Re: Make A Backup/Restore Of An User In Beehive kf

    Hello Miguel,

Well, you need place for your backup - You can say me that you store them on tapes it's less expensive than on disk - that's right it's also less efficient and quick if you have to restore your environment. You can use a dev/test environment for that - no need to install the same hardware (cpu/mem) or the same architecture - you "just" need the same space disk -
Moreover, you will install only one the machine/os/rdbms and beehive as well as the local PC.

When an user delete a mail, it is still on the trash - so whatever the client used it can recover it from there. Just configure your client to avoid to empty the trash on exit.

There are other solutions, like set up a Data Guard and apply a delay on archivelog application - all is function of your retention policy and until when on the past you accept to recover an email

Not sure to follow you, when you say that storing the wastebasket on the server will reduce you the the probabilities of having to retrieve an email from the backup. Outlook and Zimbra have the same trash folder, so for example if I delete a mail on Outlook it goes on the trash. I can see it on Zimbra on Outlook trash folder. Now if I purge my trash you won't be able to retrieve it neither on Outlook nor on Zimbra.
About your question on the Inconsistency of trash folder between Thunderbird and Zimbra, the trash folder is as far I know created by the client, and so stored locally. Outlook and Zimbra do not use IMAP to retrieve the messages but internal protocol, that's why they share their trash folder.

Recover email is definitively on the roadmap, - unfortunately I do not have date to share - as you can imagine many customers have the same request.

    Regards,
    Fred

DB:2.84:Re: Make A Backup/Restore Of An User In Beehive kf

    Diego,

    I think,

Beehive 2.0 has what we longed for for long:

    from the docs:

"Backing Up and Recovering Individual E-mail Accounts

Beginning in Oracle Beehive 2.0, you can use beectl to export
e-mail for a specified user to an external archive file. This
    utility serves two main purposes:

    * Simplifying the process of transporting an account from one
    Oracle Beehive deployment to another
    * Periodic backup of selected user account data for emergency
    recovery purposes

You can selectively and periodically export certain users' e-mail
accounts and store the exported files on the file system. Each
export serves as a single-user backup. The export file captures the
snapshot of the entire e-mail account, including the folder
hierarchy, folder names, message received date, message flags and
read status, as well as message payload in its original MIME
form. All e-mail messages in all "regular" folders will be
exported. A "regular" folder is a folder subscribable from an IMAP
client. E-mail messages in the workspace Trash are not exported.

The file is stored in a proprietary format. It is not encrypted.

Because of the highly individualized approach, e-mail export is not
suitable for entire system backup for any sizable user
population. The mechanism is not incremental and not
parallelized. Use the system-wide backup strategies described
earlier in this chapter for such purposes. ..."

That's definitely good news, although I think, we'd need extended
version of this: administrators should also be able to do such
operations for all user artifacts (capturing calender entries etc.)
and also for artifacts store in team workspaces.

    Regards, Thomas

Any error message provided? A common mistake people
make when using the Import Mailbox function is trying
to choose the mailbox file or folder instead of the
location that contains the mbox file or folder.

Nope, no error message, and I am aware of that common mistake, having been bitten by it myself at some point in the past. Mail tells me the mailbox was imported and can be found in the Import mailbox, which does not appear anywhere that I can find it. I've heard this report from at least two other people on this forum in the last month.

Messages with an IMAP type account aren't downloaded
as with a POP type account.

Yes, I understand that, but nonetheless, there are people I've heard from who have messages that appear on the IMAP server that do not appear in the in box in Mail. I haven't personally experienced this, but seeing the opposite makes me think that it's not just something stupid they're doing.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mail, it's just that I'm seeing a lot of concerning reports lately, and am experiencing enough of those problems to be worried about it.

My problem started with the purchase yesterday, 8/10/09, of a new Touch. Upon activating I was prompted to link my new Touch with a MobileMe account. I followed the instructions as dictated by iTunes. There was also an option to allow for communication between my MacBook Pro (2,2) and MobileMe. To date I only had my laptop import mail. This new sync lifestyle seemed exciting.

Here's what happened once syncing was set up:

-Touch downloads .Mac mail from MobileMe. As I already possess copies of .Mac mail at MobileMe and a partial list on my laptop, I moved all mail in Touch from the Inbox, Draft, and Sent folder to the trash. I was about to empty the trash when a bout of paranoia took hold. It didn't seem like it would be possible, but I wanted to make sure that I had not rearranged mail in Mail on my laptop, or at the server level by my actions in Touch.

-Over at MobileMe, I found all of my mail was......in the trash!

-Did all of the mail in my laptop application get moved too? Yes. Thank goodness I didn't empty the trash on my Touch. Here is the fun part, though. And by fun I mean didn't sleep much last night. As I am looking at the Mail app on my laptop my trash can is emptying.

-I race to the MobileMe account and all mail has been deleted from the trash there as well. This is 7-8 years of .mac mail.

This is not good. I need these letters. I have downloaded a copy of Data Recovery II on a separate laptop (not mine). Is this the only option for my MacBook Pro?

This won't recover all of my letters, however, as my laptop is newer than my .Mac (MobileMe) account. How can I rescue letters at www.me.com/mail ?

In an already lengthy letter the reader can stop here. What follows are my Preferences at each level which highlight my confusion and may provide added information to help others who want to avoid my situation. Thank you for your help.

iPod Touch: Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendars Fetch New Data Push On. "New data will be pushed to your iPod from the Server." I've got a bad feeling this isn't wholly accurate.

.Mac (me.com/mail): Settings Preferences Mailboxes. "Move deleted messages to: Trash." "Messages will be deleted from the trash folder after 30 days." What am I missing here?

Mail on MacBook Pro: Mail Preferences Accounts Mailbox Behaviors Trash. "Move deleted messages to a separate folder" is checked. "Erase deleted messages when: One month old." Is this one month in the Trash folder, or mail with a date that is older than one month? My guess is the latter.

In the end my theory is that MobileMe allowed the robots to conspire here. Touch had mail in the trash. Mobile followed suit and directed the MacBook Pro to do the same. MacBook Pro Mail emptied the trash and back the other way we went. How in the world is this possible with my Preferences as they are and a world where I can't rid of anything without a window asking me to consider the ramifications?

When I checked the preference it had again reverted to "after one week".Restarting the phone and resetting the phone also both have the same effect, i.e. any time the Settings app restarts, the preference for 'Remove deleted messages' is set to "after one week".I use the Trash in Mail the same was as the Finder trash: I expect to be able to find things in there until I empty the trash, and this problem has caused me to lose some messages I wanted to refer back to.Does anyone know why just this one device won't allow me to store deleted mail messages on the server indefinitely? Thanks in advance,Steve = : ^ )

Under GWCheck I can select to....

    Expire and reduce

    Items older than xxx days

    Trash older than xxx days

Does Items older than include Trash older than? Do expired Items older than go to the trash and then succumb to the Trash older than expiration cycle? Or are they separate cycles?

What does expire mean - delete and empty from the system or send to user\'s trash folder? I ask because GWCheck uses expire, but the client uses Delete (send to trash) and Empty (delete from mailbox). To achieve a 100 day retention policy should I set Items older than to 90 days and Trash older than to 10 days or 100 days? Or should it be done some other way?

Now, in our system client Cleanup options are locked at:

Mail and Phone Auto-Delete after: 90 days

Appointment, Task, and Note Manual Delete and Archive

Empty Trash Automatic after: 10 days

Allow purge of items not backed up enabled (the box is checked)

    Other settings are disabled.

and we run a Reduce task weekly. This was originally setup under the assumption that the mailboxes would handle their own deletion schedules - delete a message after 90 days, leave it in the Trash for 10 days, then empty it from the system 100 days from their reception. But, this process seems to have some loopholes as I\'ve seen messages in mailboxes way older than 100 days. Our retention policy is being reviewed and I\'m going to need to make some changes here, preferably setting a scheduled maintenance task to do cleanup weekly. How would you do it?

Also, what people archive locally is not a concern, only the system mailboxes.

    Thanks a million......

DB:2.79:Thread: What Does Expire Mean And Is It Different From Delete? mp

    Steve Eschenburg wrote:

    What does expire mean

Expire is a totally different process that what is at the workstation.

When you expire from GWCHECK the items are totally gone - not put in

trash, not recoverable without a database restore, etc. Just removed :)

So, if you truly want ALL messages that are older than x to go away,

expire is the way to do it with a heavy hand. The reason files end up in

mailboxes older than the expire date is that, for example, the client

cleanup doesn\'t delete anything that hasn\'t been opened. And if you have

a shared folder, all users have to have opened the file before it it is

    eligible for cleanup, etc.

A reason you can have BLOBS in the offiles that are older, for example is

the above, plus any items that are forwarded use the original item, and

have to keep it until the forwarded item expires, etc.

So, if you REALLY want to get rid of it all, expire is the way to go.

When you use "Secure empty trash", if you have lots of items, or big files/pictures/movies, it can sometimes take 10-15 minutes. What is happening is that it is making those sectors on your hard drive available for new files/data immediately as opposed to just making them available t write over when it gets to it.

When I have trashed large files or pictures/movies and used secure empty trash, I have seen it take up to 30 minutes to complete that task. Give it time.

We recently switched from using POP3 to access email to IMAP to better manage mailboxes between mobile and office machines (i.e. deleting/sending one one device shows deleted/sent mail on all devices). It is mostly working well for what we need. However,
we have discovered that Outlook 2010 is automatically purging messages from the Trash folder after 7 days even though all Trash folder settings I can find are configured not to do so, and the host email server is not doing the purging. Generally, most people
don't need to keep the 'Trash' for any amount of time so this wouldn't be a problem, but this is for an insurance agency so we need to keep those messages for a longer period of time just in case they are required for a claim or an audit.
I spoke with the higher tier support at my hosting service and they confirmed that their servers do not have any scheduled purging of deleted messages so it has to be something happening within Outlook but I have not been able to find out what is causing
    this.
These are the steps I have checked so far:
AutoArchive is disabled for all folders.
There aren't any message rules at all in Outlook, so nothing that would be deleting the items.
FileOptionsAdvancedEmpty Deleted Items Folders when Exiting Outlook box is not checked.
Account SettingsMore SettingsDeleted Items Tab is set to move items to the Trash folder on the server but NOT to Purge items when switching folders.

I don't see any other options related to deleted items or purging/archiving anywhere. Please tell me where I can find the settings for this scheduled automatic deletion so I can either extend the time or (preferably) disable it completely so that the Trash
folder is only emptied when manually told to do so.
    Thank you.

DB:2.78:Outlook 2010 Automatically Purging Messages From The Trash Folder After 7 Days 3c

I didn't think there would be any other way that Outlook would be doing this, but the host company swears they don't have anything doing it on their servers either.
The folks in the office already have keeper folders for the actual keeper messages, but to comply with regulations/audits, we need to keep stuff that is actually deleted (even if it really is junk) for a longer period of time as well, mostly in case
    someone deletes something they shouldn't.

DB:2.78:Constantly "Sorting Messages" In 10.3.9, Can't View Messages fd

Imported mailboxes should not be located under In, Drafts, Sent, Trash or Junk.

Let's try targeting the Trash mailbox for the POP account first.

Quit Mail and using the Finder, go to Home Library Mail this POP type account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) Deleted Messages.mbox.

(Since you have one email account, you should have only one account named folder at the first level within the Mail folder.)

Delete the Deleted Messages.mbox file and empty the Trash.

Launch Mail and a new Deleted Messages.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when selecting the next message for deletion that is located in an account mailbox such as the account's Inbox or Sent mailbox.

If this doesn't resolve the problem, then the next step will be targeting the "On My Mac" Trash mailbox which is used when selecting a message for deletion that is located in an "On My Mac" created mailbox or located in an imported mailbox.

Apple has a flag option to lock files and prevent them from being modified. This can be seen by getting information on a file, where you can see the "Locked" checkbox and its status. When deleting these files, instead of having to get info on all of them to unlock them, you can simply hold the Option key to clear them from the trash.

    Ok,
I have imap .mac set up. I use Apple Mail and Safari/webmail to access.
    I have noted the following:
The trash can on the Apple webmail does not mirror the trash in Apple Mail.
1.) I access webmail via Safari and move a file to the trash.
2.) I then logout, and open Apple Mail.app
3.) I look in the trash can there: that message is not reflected there, but Apple Mail has a new mailbox called "deleted messages" that does reflect the trash on the Safari/webmail access.

In Mail.app, I have Mailbox behaviors set to "move deleted messages to trash," but do not have "store deleted messages on server" selected. I also have "permanently removed deleted messages" set to never as I like to be able to choose when I need to do this.

Here is the thing, if you reverse this, move a message while viewing in Apple Mail to trash can, then open webmail interface, it does not show up in that trash can.

It seems, that there is some wierdness in how trash is handled in each.

DB:2.78:Trash Behaviour .Mac Webmail Vs Apple Mail.App Imap kc

I was just under the impression that, with imap, the trash in apple mail
would reflect the trash on webmail.

And you were right, but IMAP accomplishes that by storing your mail on the server, i.e. youd observe the behavior you expect if you turn ON the corresponding Store messages on the server setting...

You might want to dig around in your home folder and see how other permissions are set as well. My wife's started with the trash acting flaky as well as her Safari bookmarks were not being saved. Turned out the vast majority of the files in the home directory had Fetching. It was a brand new Air and I assume it happened during the migration of user files. I had done a fresh install of the apps, they were fine. But, not their preferences files which were in the home directory. If you have more issues, what I did was get info on the home directory, make sure the permissions are ok, my wife's were, little tool box at the bottom, apply to all.

I have my preferences set to auto delete trash. It is set to 1 day, but it does not seem to work. Right now, I have 40 messages in trash that are between 2 and 25 days old. Does something else need to be set to make this work? Or does it just not work? I remember trying this several years ago, and I recall that I could not make it work then as well.

I am not exactly sure how it happened, but my wife's email mailbox has lost all of the read emails. She did not delete them, as far as she knows. but she was online last night at around 8 PM and the messages were all there. When she logged back in this morning the mailbox only had two new emails...and the older messages were gone but not in the trash bin. Is there any way to restore her email box? It would only need to be restored since yesterday evening.

    Thank you.

DB:2.76:Inbox Messages 30 Days &Amp; Older Being Automatically Deleted ff

Mail is automatically deleting messages from my Inbox automatically when they reach an age of about 30 days, any ideas? I've got a workaround in place right now, rule that forwards messages to a yahoo account once they reach 27 days, but I'd like to be able to just leave them on my machine for those times I need to reference an email and the internet isn't available.

AFAIK there is NOT an option/preference for automatically deleting Inbox messages, that was my first thought but when I dug around I couldn't find it anywhere. Am I missing something obvious?

If the solution is to backup my messages, trash mail, and reinstall thats fine but I'd like some pointers on how to do so. I've never backed up Mail emails so any tips would help

    Thanks!

I don't know what causes your problem, but there's a much better work around for it than what you're doing now. Create custom mailbox folders and put there all the mail that you want to keep, organized however you like. Note that this would be a good idea even if Mail wasn't deleting any messages by itself. Inbox should be used just as a temporary location for storing incoming messages, until you move them to a more appropriate place.

    Using Leopard and Mail v3.2.

I am not able to see the trashed messages in the Trash (of course, before quitting Mail).

Is there anything that I am missing?

    Thanks for any help.

    DB:2.75:Trash kp

Thanks. I have found the cause of this problem.

If I press Command + Delete OR the Delete icon, the message will go to the trash and could be seen there until I quit Mail, time at which it will be deleted.

But if I press Command + X, which is what I had been doing, the message is right away completely deleted, even without quitting Mail. That's what I was doing and, of course, I was NOT finding any message in the Trash.

I have searched all over preferences and under main menu drop down menus. I cannot find an option to show a Trash mailbox. And yet, Under Accounts - Mailbox Behavior - Trash, there is a checkbox to Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox.
I see Junk and Delete. But where is Trash in Mail?
    Duh.

That's not up to you to decide. The account type is defined by the email provider. Some do allow a choice. I believe that the majority do not. If they do, they'll give you a choice in the account configuration and setup directions that they provide to you.

To the best of my knowledge, .mac is NOT one of those that give you a choice.

When you selected .mac in account setup, it is, essentially, imap. I really don't know what any differences are between selecting ".mac" and selecting "imap", and if none, why the distinction between the two during account setup is made. Maybe it was just to make things "easier" for .mac folks; some sort of marketing gizmo.

The only benefit I see to POP accounts is if you are paranoid about storing your mail on a server. However, until it was downloaded, it was stored there anyways. The big benefit that I see with IMAP is that regardless of from what computer you are accessing your account, your mailboxes on the different computers stay synchronized with one another, so the mailboxes on one computer don't get out of whack with those on another computer. It is always the "latest and greatest."

It sounds like the email program on the iMac is using pop3 protocol to access your account and is removing the emails from the server after two weeks.
Check the account settings on the iMac.
