    - The first one, I think can be resolved more quickly: when I try to open the console from any virtual machine I have installed and running, I got this message: "The remote host certificate has these problems:" and nothing else...

    - The second one may be related to the first one. The Converter enterprise servive does not start, it is always on a starting state, even if i kill the process and try to initiate it manually the process keeps hanging.

Does anyone has ever had any of these errors? Please help.

I've since moved to a new motherboard from a different manufacturerwith a very recent BIOS, different network controller, and latest drivers all around. I get the exact same behavior. If this is due to something that MS requires in the BIOS its clear that major motherboard manufacturers are not on board yet. Until they are, I wouldthink MS has some responsibility to support prevelant hardware instead of just finger pointing.

DB:2.65:Guest Is Extremely Slow To Start 7m

Hello, I recently downloaded VMware workstation 6 to evaluate with full intentions to purchase after the 30 days. I had previously built so-called universal sysprepped OS images using vmware server guests however the limitation of being confined to only one snapshot was too much of a limitation in my case. So currently I'm migrating, essentially rebuilding all of my OS images inside of 32 bit XP/2003 Guests in vmware workstation. Note: At this point I have around 100 snapshots on the physical disk where my VMs are being stored.

Recently I noticed that after clicking on a snapshot and then clicking the green arrow to 'start this virtual machine' it's taking like 10-15 minutes before the boot process even begins! This is a brand new 250 GB hard drive with 74GB of free space freshly defragged. The host isn't great, it has 1GB of RAM, P4, running XP with 512MB memory allocated to the guest. Is anyone else having this issue of slow start up? When I look at task manager on the host the CPU is under 10% but the hard drive is just grinding away like mad. Eventually the guest will boot but this is an unacceptable delay.

Update: One interesting thing to note. Just decided to look into the Virtual Machine settings dialog, clicked on the hard disk, then clicked on the utilities button. Defragment Virtual Disk was a selectable option even though I'm running a 16GB pre-allocated disk. Now I'm really confused, doesn't pre-allocating eliminate the need to defragment from in here? As I recall this wasn't permitted with Vmware server except with growable disks... FWIW after running the defrag from here I'm not seeing any substantial improvement. Checked the vmware.log and found dozens of these entries repeated:

    Dec 12 14:17:50.671: vmx| USBGW: Skipping disk backing for file (D:\Current\Virtual Machines\Windows XP Professional\Windows XP Professional-Snapshot156.vmem).

DB:2.65:Guest Is Extremely Slow To Start 7m

After additional testing, I'm leaning toward the explanation of having twelve snapshots daisy-chained together and trying to boot from a snapshot located at the very end of the chain as the reason for the 10-15 minute delayed start. To test, I created a full clone of the very last snapshot(#12) . The clone started up and booted immediately. If having a dozen snapshots without a full clone someplace in the chain indeed slows the startup time then it's a big disappointment to me..... multiple snapshots are certainly a great selling point but this delay is a problem IMHO and it will take better planning upfront (i.e. plan on creating space hungry 'full clones' at various intervals) to maintain any kind of usable performance, at least on this 'box'.

I did a P2V of a Win2003 machine. We are in 2-node HyperV cluster environment and the new VM would be stored on our SAN and highly available as I selected the cluster to host. The P2V went fine actually and every step passed. However when I started the new VM afterward Windows gave me the message about the machine shutdown last time was unexpected. I gave it a reason just to get by it but I'm wondering why VMM didn't shut down the VM gracefully? Even though I told it not to start the VM when done VMM will start the VM during the P2V when it has to install VM components. There are steps right in a row that I see where it 1..4.1.1 Start virtual machine to install VM components 1.4.1.2 Stop virtual machine Both of these pass. In the event log for the VM during the stop time you can see where Windows is going thru a shutdown process as you see the Event log service shut down. But step 1.4.1.2 doesn't even take 1 second to complete so that's another hint that it wasn't a graceful shutdown. Also in failover clustering that VM showed a state of Failed after the P2V instead of just Off. Is this something not to worry about?

DB:2.64:P2v And Unexpected Shutdown Message After... c1

Not necessarily. I get these errors once in a while.  As integration components are installed the machine needs to reboot.  Once you've powered up the machine did the failed status get cleared?Juraj

I am running VMWare 4.0.0 on a Mandrake 9.0 host, with a RedHat 9 guest. I can setup a shared folder between the host and the guest. However, I have trouble with the following:

    1) On the guest, command "ls -l" reports that all the files in the shared folder (seen as "/mnt/hpgs/" are set "rw" and belong to root, even though on the host they are not. I took care to use on the guest the same uid's and gid's as used on the host, but this does not change anything. Would there be a way to see the real uid's and gid's, as with NFS for ex. ?

    2) Even though root seems to be the owner of the shared files, he is not. Only the user who is running the virtual machine can write in the shared folder and change permssions there, if the shared folder permissions on the host give him access. This makes sense, but since the output of an "ls -l" command executed from the guest on the shared folder reports wrong permissions, it becomes quite difficult to locate a folder where one can write to in the guest machine, without going back to the host to have a look

3)Being logged as root on the guest does not give you any special privilege on the shared folder. It is the account used to start the virtual machine on the host that matters.

DB:2.62:Can I Use Windows 7 Pro And A Kms Host For Only 10 Vdi Users? fx

You're probably wondering why I want to use a KMS host for only 10 users?
I understand that a KMS host requires 25 physical or virtual machines to be connected to it at least every 30 days or else it will stop activating machines, however..... I want to use a Windows 7 VDI setup for 10 users. Each virtual desktop will refresh
(old one deleted, new one created) with a brand new virtual desktop every day keeping the whole desktop nice and fresh, so 10 brand new virtual desktops every day, meaning 300 every 30 days, this should keep the KMS host happy.
Why am I not using MAK activation I hear you ask? If I chose this route, then each day that the virtual desktop gets refreshed with a brand new desktop, it would burn up a MAK activation and I'd run out. Because of this I need to use KMS instead. To get
the KMS host to start activating in the first place we'll need at least 25 Windows 7 desktops. So day 1 and 2, the KMS host will refuse to activate my 10 users as the machine count is less than 25, but on day 3 the KMS host will have seen 30 machines, even
though only 10 are ever in use at any one time.
So based on my theories above, I have two questions:
    - Can any see any cracks in my understanding of how the KMS host will react?
    - Can I buy a Windows 7 VL KMS key (VDA?) for 10 users or do I have to buy a minimum of 25 users?
Thanks in advance to anyone that takes the time to even think this through!

I am using the current WinRM and PowerShell for the host and VMM Server. However I do get an error reported in the application event log a bit prior to this that says:

    Source:  Service Control Manager
    Name:  The service terminated unexpectedly.
Description:  The VMInstallDetector service terminated with service-specific error 2148925441 (0x80160001).

The host is Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard SP2 fully patched as is the VMM Server.

I have tried this same process on numerous different hosts in numerous different forests. We use 1 way External Non-transitive trusts between the other forests (branches) and the master forest. This has served us well for managing all services in the other forests from the master forest without granting the users in the remote forests authentication to the master forest. We did add an administrative group from the master forest to the hosts local administrator group as well so that the user account specified during the host wizard would have the necessary permissions on the host even though that account resides in the master forest.

    Any help/direction is appreciated.

DB:2.60:Virtual Network Interfaces Conflict With Ip Range Of Private Network? xj

Our remote users normally connect to our private network using the built-in Mac VPN; our private network uses the 172.16.x.x IP range. When we recently installed Fusion 3.x (with WinXP Pro as guest OS) on a MacPro running Snow Leopard, the host OS was still able to connect using the VPN but received only timeouts when trying to access any of our hosts resident on our private network (even though the VPN connection was established). This behavior only began post Fusion install and occurs with or without Fusion running. The original Fusion install was for NAT; we tried bridged, but with no change to the behavior. Later we tried host only networking, but, again, no effect.

I asked this user to kill all of the virtual interface processes (via Activity Monitor) to determine if they could be the source of the problem. When he did this, he found that he was able to access our private network resources normally.

We tried to disable the launchd process com.vmware.launchd.vmware.plist - it runs /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/boot.sh - but Fusion failed to start altogether.

Upon further investigation, it looks like the virtual interfaces are using the same IP space (172.16.x.x) as those on our private network. Is it reasonable to assume that this is the source of the problem? If so how can it be fixed in a reproducible way, one that survives reboots?

I find that most of the time, some if not all of the machines fail to restart when the host is rebooted - even though the shutdown/startup options are set to shut doen gracefully and start up on reboot.

I did have these boxes configured to run as a named user account, but they're now set to run under a system account. At least in this configuration they can be manually started. With a user account they fail to log in correctly unless the host is rebooted a second time

Anybody seen this? know a work-around?

Thanks both of you for your help.

It turns out I'm just not waiting long enough for them to start up. They were starting up after about 3 minutes at around 30 second intervals, starting with the MOST RECENTLY added to the inventory (rather than oldest first which I had expected).

I still don't know why starting up under a specific local account is problematic, but frankly it's not important for my solution, so I'm gonna go with what works.

    Hi,

During one of our Microsoft training session there is a requirment for the 4 windows2k3 R2 server so for this we decided to provide the VM hosted in ESX4.1 host. We have sucessfully created and configured the VM's with all the Vmware tools and windows Patches.

So after that we started our lab session, our trainer given the Virtual PC files to start the VM's inside the Virtual PC, but as soon as we trying to start the VM inside the Virtual PC the ESX4.1 hosted VM win2k3 server CPU is going to 100% and eventually leading to network disconnection.

Prior to this even a single file copy also breaks the network connection due to the high CPU utilization. I did'nt understand why the ESX4.1 VM CPU is shooting to 100% as soon I am initiating any process in the ESX4.1 W2K3 VM.

    I am trying to run

Microsoft Virtual PC VM ------inside ------Microsft Virtual PC2007 virtualization software ----------installed in -------Windows2003 Server VM hosted in ESX4.1 ------------hosted in -----Vsphere4.1 ESX4.1 Server.

So from the above the summary is.

    1) Why ESX4.1 Win2K3 host CPU is shooting to 100% as soon as any process is started ( even a simple file copy also)?

    2) Can we RUN Windows Microsoft Virtual PC2007 ( Microsoft Virtualization Product ) in side a Vmware ESX4.1 VM?

Can any budy have any information on this senario.

Compare the two Host nodes (the virtual server that is linked to the ESX Server and the one that isn't) and see if there are attributes which exist on one and not on the other.

Also, are both VMs discovered to be running on the ESX server?

As I mentioned in my previous message, our VMware documentation goes into more detail about the attributes needed from both ESX Server side and virtual host side in order for the relationship to be created.

Just to clarify the host machine has just 256Mb RAM.

Which version of Windows is on the host machine and what is the OS on the VM Ware guest machine ?

PS If the host does only have 256 Mb RAM, it might be an idea to increase the RAM to at least 512 Mb, a good rule of thumb is 256Mb RAM for each guest image plus whatever the host OS needs itself (256 Mb RAM).

The bottom line is more RAM is better.

On a Vista box, I have a MS Virtual 2007 virtual machine running XP.
I just got a Windows 7 box. I copied over the virtual machine files from the XP box:
    - .VHD (Virtual Hard Drive file)
    - .VMC (Virtual hard drive settings file)
I then created a new virtual machine in Windows 7 based on the Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine; I enabled the Integration Features and checked all the drives.
Original Title: Created a new virtual machine in Windows 7 based on a Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine (from an XP box); cannot access host (Windows 7) drives from virtual machine
When I then run the new virtual XP machine in Windows 7, everything runs fine (and faster as well).
The one issue I'm experiencing, however, is that I cannot access the host (Windows 7) drives from virtual machine, even though I've shared the drives on Windows 7.
BTW, if I run the built-in "Windows XP Mode" virtual machine, I see the host drives when I run Windows Explorer from within that virtual machine.
What is it that I'm missing? (BTW, it was a *ton* easier in MS Virtual PC 2007; I simply "mapped" a shared drive in the Settings dialog and then see that drive when I run Windows Explorer from within that virtual machine.)
Another thought: should I simply abandon the above, install MS Virtual PC 2007 on the Windows 7 box and then create the virtual machine with MS Virtual PC 2007 (in lieu of the built-in Windows Virtual PC in Windows 7)?

The issus is that when I start the VM and attempt to intsall the guest OS the VM does not see the DVD even though it is setup in the VM. When I go into the settings of the VM and try to setup DVD to use Host device I get the message that no devices are available. Help...

DB:2.55:New Virtual Machine Cannot See Host Dvd Rom sm

SATA has always been a little flakey when it comes to ESX. You might need to upgrade your BIOS or make some small changes within the BIOS for it to see the drive. A quick solution might be to create an ISO of the DVD you're looking to use and upload it to your datastore to use until you get the issue resolved.

DB:2.54:Cannot Get Linux Guest Vm To Start Automatically When Host Boots cs

I'm trying to get a VM to start at boot time, as per http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-6263 , "HowTo: Run a Virtual Machine at Boot."

I need the guest (Slax Linux) to start when the system boots, and run regardless whether anyone is logged in on the host console. The Slax VM is replacing a physical linux box which acted as an sshd gateway/firewall so I could tunnel into my LAN without exposing the rest of the LAN to the outside world.

The instructions listed above only start the guest VM if the host system is set to auto-login as the user specified in the Username string in the Plist file. (Which for security reasons is not acceptable). The startup process for the guest also seems to insist on starting the Fusion user interface, even though I've enabled "Headless", and set the VM to headless mode after the last use.

(see Fusion Power Users' Guide, http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-1201 )

Rather curiously, If I leave the Username out of the Plist file (presumably, means run as root), Fusion's menu actually appears on the host's login screen, but I cannot do anything in it. (which may be related to a registration/license issue -- see my new-discussion post in the Fusion forum,

    http://communities.vmware.com//thread/205597?tstart=0 ).

Debugging code in the script which is trying to start the guest VM shows that the LaunchDemon plist to run Fusion's boot.sh was run and my own plist was processed; boot.sh started as expected, and that the call is made to vmrun to process the guest VM's .vmx. But despite the "headless" settings, it appears that the guest VM only starts if it can start up the Fusion GUI, and that will only happen if the host auto-logs in to the user a/c specified in the .plist file.

Anybody encountered this, have an idea what the issue is, or know what I need to do to get it to start without the auto-login?

DB:2.54:Cannot Get Linux Guest Vm To Start Automatically When Host Boots cs

    Resolved.

I switched from using vmrun to start my guest VM (as suggested in the responses to [http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-6263|d-6263] , "HowTo: Run a Virtual Machine at Boot.") to using vmware-vmx.

vmrun seems to need to be able to start the Fusion GUI in order to start the guest VM. vmware-vmx doesn't have that limitation.

If I read the comments in the Howto correctly, vmrun is supposed to be the 'correct' way to do it in Fusion 2.0.x, but despite comments to the contrary in the Howto's responses, the "old" way does work, at least for me. Only change needed was that the path to vmware-vmx has changed from

    /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmx/Contents/MacOS/vmware-vmx"

I shutdown the VMs and then hard rebooted host.

because host was not a part of cluster ( i removed it earlier ) HA did not start vms.

I attached the host to vcenter and it has already vms inside, so at the moment it attached to cluster HA kicks in and restarted the VMs.

    Hi,

    How are you doing?

What is the best way to deploy a web application using a virtual host on a clustered

o Deploy the web application on the virtual host
o Deploy the virtual host on the cluster
o Make the web appliation, the default application on the virtual host

This seems to work, but I have additional questions?

In the above deployment, looking at the deploy tab for the web application shows
that the application is deployed to both the cluster as well as the virtual host.
Even though we didn't explicitly deploy to the cluster! What happens if we deploy

DB:2.53:Guests Will Not Start On Vmware Server 1.0.7 (Host Centos 5.2) 8j

    Hello -

    First my question:

Is it possible to start a virtual machine within a Linux host environment where the virtual machine was copied from a NTFS formatted drive?

I have spent several days trying to figure this issue out. I have successfully installed vmware server 1.0.7 on CentOS 5.2 but am unable to start my virtual machines. I get the following error in the log file:

'Error during launch: 11, The "/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx" process did not start properly'

Within vmware server console I get the following message:

    'Try running "/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx /var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/Other Linux 2.6.x kernel/Other Linux 2.6.x kernel.vmx" from the command-line on the server.'

After this point the following process continues to run at 100% CPU utilization until I kill the process.

    /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx -C /var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/Other Linux 2.6.x kernel/Other Linux 2.6.x kernel.vmx -@ ""

Both virtual machins start properly from vmware server (1.0.4) running

on a Windows Vista host and vmserver 2.0 running from a Windows XP

    Professional host.

I have verified that the virtual files are all read/writable as well as the parent directory. I tried running as root to rule out permissions (same result). I have confirmed that the all of the vmware server processes are running as root. I even tried as recommended in http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_UScmd=displayKCexternalId=1003748; removing the "vmx" file on one virtual machine and creating a new virtual machine pointing to the existing virtual disks with the same results.

I had been using windows as my host and running Linux as the guest. Because of work requirements I switched over to using Linux as the host and wanted to be able to run Windows in the guest. I used vmware-converter to convert my Windows XP Professional physical machine to a virtual one and wrote it out to an external drive that was NTFS formatted. I also copied the virtual Linux instance to the external drive. As indicated above both virtual machines can be started from Windows. Within CentOS I mounted the external drive and copied the virtual machines over to the Linux box (I am using the linux ntfs kernal moduel to be able to read NTFS formatted disks).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ken

DB:2.53:Guests Will Not Start On Vmware Server 1.0.7 (Host Centos 5.2) 8j

I was able to determine that the problem was a result of copying the virtual machine files from the NTFS external drive using the ntfs-kernel in Linux. The resolution was to plug the external drive (NTFS formatted) into a Windows machine and then scp the files from the Windows box to the Linux box. Then the virtual machine started right up.

DB:2.53:Vmware Workstation Not Utilizing 16gb Ram mx

    extracted from VMware Workstation Manual:

    Memory

You need enough memory to run the host operating system, plus the memory required for

each guest operating system and for applications on the host and guest.

The minimum is 512MB (2GB is recommended). For memory requirements, see

your guest operating system and application documentation.

As of version 6.5 of Workstation, the total amount of memory you can assign to all virtual

machines running on a single host is limited only by the amount of RAM

on the host. The maximum amount of memory for each virtual machine is

    Linux kernel is 2.6.9-34.ELsmp (i686 athlon i386)

If I try to start a virtual machine with for example 2GB of RAM assigned and vmstat on hosting server is showing less than 2GB of free memory then the cpu load goes through the roof and vmware eventually kills the virtual machine. I have tried with both Windows 2000 and 2003 as the guest OS.

This is posing a big problem for us because even though the host machine has 5Gb of ram, it only allows me to run 2 guest of 2GB each after a reboot. That means if I switch off one of them I would not be able to start up another one as vmstat would show me few megs of free memory and 4.5Gb of cache memory. Unless I reboot the host machine and then I can start 2 guest machines again.

Basically when the host tries to swap memory vmware crashes the virtual machines.

Has anyone experienced similar issues and get round to it?

without any errors and rebooted. Then installed Windows XP Mode (WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe)
also without any errors. Attempted to run Windows XP Mode and nothing happened for about 30 seconds then received a popup error message saying Cannot start Windows Virtual PC Host Process. Check the System event log for more details
    Server execution failed.

Checking the even log only showed one error message, The server {9A1774B7-8251-4468-A214-61DCAED9AC2F} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. That refers to the VirtualPC Class but that's all I can see.

I have tried reloading Windows 7 a few times (with an SSD it doesn't take long) and tried installing the VPC at different stages of driver installation thinking it might be related to that but still no luck. I have downloaded fresh copies of the VPC and
    XP MODE each time.

I have tried to run VPC.EXE directly from the SYSTEM32 folder but nothing happens, not even an error message. If I run VPCSETTINGS.EXE I eventually get an error message (after the 30 second delay) that says the same thing as the other error message from
above but instead of saying Server execution failed it says An error occurred while performing the operation. Error code: 0x80080005. If I run VPCWIZARD.EXE is says essentially the same thing and gives the same error code.

I had recently set up XP MODE on a new desktop computer for this same customer and everything went along fine. Now trying to set up their new laptop to do the same thing and it's giving me this grief. I have read article upon article but either
none of them apply or there was no conclusion to the problem given (even though your site says 'answered').

Please point me in a direction. Why would the VPC Host process not start on a clean Win7 install that meets the necessary requirements and no other software installed?

    Thanks in advance.

Please re-install the Windows 7, if there is no issues whenloading the WIndows 7, then please try installing the XP VM .Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. DB:2.52:How To Stop/Kill A Virtual Machine That Hangs In Stopping State? fz

    Hi,
I have a virtual machine that constantly hangs in the Stopping state.
Ive red several posts suggesting killing the vmwp.exe process of the machine but Ive never been able to kill this process neither from the Windows Task Manager nor from an administrative command prompt by using prockill /PID xxxx /F where xxxx was the process ID. The only result that I have is that my machine enters in Stopping-Critical state.
Even worse, from that point (having a virtual machine hung at stopping) I am unable to manage (stop or start) any other virtual machine on the same host. The only solution in that case for me is to stop the Virtual Machine Management Service (vmms.exe) and to restart the physical host. Without first stopping the vmms.exe service my physical host also hangs during the restart.
Moreover, there is no any error logged in the Event Viewer.
Ive found some other posts complaining about them problem. On all of them the only suggestion was to kill the vmwp.exe process, which obviously doesnt work for them too.
Can somebody help us with this, pls?
    Thanks
    - Svet
Update: Ive tried some ideas like:
Disabling all (TCP, IP, UDP LSO) offloads into the virtual machine
Configuring the host server to run in High-performance power mode
Still, no success, my machine hung again today when I tried to stop it using the Shutdown button in Hyper-V Manager. Before that, I was able to stop it several times from within the VM itself.
I cannot understand where the problem is because this is a new installation of Windows Server 2008 R2 as a guest machine.
The host is Dell R710, running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V role. I have 3 more machines on this host (one WS2008 R2 and two W2K3 R2) all running without any problem.

DB:2.52:How To Stop/Kill A Virtual Machine That Hangs In Stopping State? fz

Yes, I read it, it doesnt help. The last post on that blog is from me.
    I have some development:
I did a new installation of WS2008 R2 on the second R710. It worked fine (starting-stopping it many times) up to the moment when I added it to the domain (could be coincidence, could be not).
I think I narrowed the source of the problem using Sysinternals Process Monitor: it is able to kill all threads of a hung vmwp.exe process except for one related to msvcrt.dll which I am unable to kill.
    Thanks

    DB:2.52:Vmware Server 1.0 Linux Host/Windows 2k3 Guest Problems zz

Hi all, hope you can help me troubleshoot this problem:

    Using VMware Server 1.0

    CentOS 4.3 Linux Host (32bit)

Dual Xeon 2.4GHz with HT on

    2GB memory

    Windows 2003 Server (32bit) using 1 CPU

    512MB memory

    Bridged Networking (different IP address)

Background: The host system has a lot of disc space and is used to provide live copies of several different systems.

    My problem is this:

I start rsync niced to update one of the live copied filesystems on the host OS. 1 minute after I do this the virtual 2k3 server becomes unresponsive and will not respond. I can ssh into the host OS and use it just fine. Only about 20% of CPU usage for the rsync tasks. The host system remains responsive throughout the entire event. I don't understand why the VMware console and the VMware Virtual Server aren't responding. Once the rsync has finished the virtual 2k3 server returns to normal functioning like nothing has ever happened. The server doesn't crash or become unstable even if this process happens multiple times. I wouldn't mind if it just got slow, but it is totally unusable during these periods.

    Advice?

    DB:2.52:Vmware Server 1.0 Linux Host/Windows 2k3 Guest Problems zz

The IO wait is high on several CPUs and jumps around but there is always idle remaining on several CPUs. I can do some file IO on the host system while it is rsync'ing which is why I don't understand VMware being unable to handle it. VMware is always running at a much much higher priority. It is like VMware Server is detecting this and changing its settings.

    Hi,
Am running Plesk on a Virtual Dedicated Server but recently was not able to connect to the control panel by going to serverip:8443. Cant even get the control panel to start on the server itself after connecting via RDC.

I had my host company upgrade Plesk but the control panel will still not start, and they say it is because I have too many files on the server that is overwhelming Plesk.

I have setup a fully dedicated server but need to switch some content over, so I need to know if anyone has any ideas on resolving this problem. To be honest, I have never had to manage a server without Plesk, so I am a little unsure as how to remove some domains using just the Windows-supplied tools, so any help there would be appreciated as well.

Thanks so much for your time!

    DB:2.52:Control Panel Wont Start 8p

    Hello,

Plesk 7.6.x Control Panel (ond later versions) can be managed under both IIS and Apache web service. You can find the exact method in the registry:

Start Run cmd HKLM SOFTWARE Plesk PSA Config Config WEB_PROVIDER

After that you may try to switch it to the different one with the command:

    Start Run cmd
    cd %plesk_bin%
    reconfigurator.exe --switch-plesk-web-server --new-provider=apache

    or

    reconfigurator.exe --switch-plesk-web-server --new-provider=iis

and monitor if Plesk CP starts under this web server.

As for domain removal. Unfortunately it is not quite clear what is the exact error that occurs when you trying to remove some specific domain. Can you provide me with the error message? In any case, removing domain manually from IIS or Plesk database is not recommended as there are lot of broken dependencies occurs during incorrect removal.

I have seen one other post on this, but it was not resolved.

    Other weird facts:

    - I can open a command window and select 'Y' drive by typing 'Y:lt;returngt;'. I can not then do 'dir gt; z.z' (I get 'access denied')

    - If I run cmd.exe as administrator, I can not CD to it by typing 'Y:lt;returngt;'

    - The drive is locked and as far as VMWare is concerned, it is mapped. VMWare even shows a list of partitions when I start the mapping process.

    - The drive is not visible in explorer etc.

I am running Vista 32 bit with the latest SPs etc.

Can anyone report that it works for them in Vista? If so, give details of drive type, vmware version etc.

Can anyone report the same problems in any OS? If so, which OS? And were you able to fix it? If s, how?

Since about 2 weeks ago Virtualcenter is refusing to start up any of my virtuals with more then 1 cpu. I get a message "Virtual machine has 2 virtual CPUs, but the host software only supports 1. Please check the licenses on the host."

This message seems to come on hosts running Enterprise and Standard edition. The standard edition servers only have one Quad cpu, that should not limit vCPU's though? In "ESX Server Licence Type" I have a mention "Up to 4-way virtual SMP".

    DB:2.51:Host Software Only Supports 1 Cpu? k7

    You need this workaround:

    1. go to the license server

    2. in the license server app i click "Reload license file" and stop/start the service

    3. go into VC2 and select the ESX server

    4. pull off the license so the server is "unlicensed"

    5. put the license back on

    6. start the VM

DB:2.51:Hyper-V With Dhcp, Dns, Routing And Remote Access zd

Hello everyone! Getting right to the point, here is my issue:I built a server for a client using Server 2008 x64 Enterprise. This server is for a robust web application, so I have two servers virtualised thus far. Both are 32-bit Windows Server 2003 R2 with Sp2. One is running IIS for the site, and the other server is running SQL 2005 for the site's databases. This server is currently at my office, but once I'm finished it will be colocated at a data center. This is my first experience with Hyper-V, so excuse my ignorance! Basically, I want to create an Active directory network with these virtual machines. For now, I just want to have the Host OS (Server 08) running DNS, DHCP etc. for the virtual machines. I guess where I'm confused is the virtual networking. I have a physical NIC that I gave a static IP address, and pointed DNs to my office netowork DNs server. I installed DHCP, and binded it to my virtual switch in Hyper-V that was created when I installed Hyper-V. (The virtual switch also has a static IP I gave it, which is outside the scope that I assigned to DHCP, but still the same subnet) In the virtual machine settings both virtual servers have the virtual switch selected for their NIC. Both virtual machines will get an IP address from the host machine DHCP server. On the physical NIC for DNS I have it pointed to itself, and put my office network DNs server as a forwarder. (This is all for testing purposes!) And the HOSt OS can get on the internet with this config. So even though both virtual machines get their local ip address and have the host PC IP as their dNS, they can not get on the internet. Maybe I have a totally convoluted setup, so if I'm way off base please let me know and I will start over. What I'm trying to accomplish is this:Server 2008 computer gets a static IP at the colo facility. Use Server 08 as Firewall and Routing for 2 virtual machines. Both virtual machines and any future virtual machines use Server 08 machine as DNS, DHCP, etc, so it operates as it's own separate network.I've done this many times suing Server 03 and physical NIC's by using Routing and Remote access, but I think the concept of virtual NICs and Switches is getting the best of me here. Rather than take stabs in the dark I figured I would ask and get some guidance first. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

DB:2.51:Hyper-V With Dhcp, Dns, Routing And Remote Access zd

    1. Yes, running a domain controller with DNS and DHCP should be fine.  2. Do not run RRAS on a DC. A DC/DNS server should not be multihomed, so running RRAS as a router or a remote access server on a DC is a no-no. Bill

    Hi.

I'm getting an error "unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to connect to peer process" when trying to start a VM.

    I have a Fedora 7 x86_64 host system, from which I removed all 32bit packages after install (I wanted a pure'ish 64bit system, no multiarch junk, so I did an: rpm -e `rpm -qa --queryformat "%\{name}-%\{version}-%\{release}.%\{arch}\n" | grep \.i.86`).

I installed the VMWare Workstation 6 RPM onto this host. vmware-config.pl shows no errors and reports the module loading correctly into the running kernel and all services starting correctly. The vmware program launches fine and created a new VM for me. It's only when I attempt to power on that VM that I get the error: "unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to connect to peer process".

The /tmp/vmware-hubick/ui-3850.log shows some "DLSYM: Failed to resolve...undefined symbol" messages for libcrypto, and some "readlink /var/run/vmware... No such file or directory" messages, and a "VMHSHostConnectVMX: Failed to connect to pipe..." message.

Searching for the "peer process" error given by the UI, most people in a similar situation are running a Ubuntu or Debian 64 bit system and advised to install the "ia32-libs" package. Is that likely my problem, and is there an equivalent package(s) for Fedora 7?

(The RPM should have specified all it's deps though).

Much Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

DB:2.51:Ws6 On Fedora 7 X86_64 Host: Can't Start Vm da

Well, after much snooping, I kept launching /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx and it would give me an "error while loading shared libraries: XXXX.so.X" error, and I would then install the 32bit version of whatever package provided that lib.

    This resulted in me installing the following packages: glibc.i686, libX11.i386, libXau.i386, libXdmcp.i386, libXtst.i386, libXext.i386, libXrender.i386, zlib.i386.

    It now works.

Shouldn't those packages be explicitly required by the RPM?

Also interesting, I installed the VMware-workstation-6.0.0-45731.x86_64.rpm, noting the x86_64 version, but RPM shows only VMwareWorkstation-6.0.0-45731.i386, a 32 bit package, as being installed afterward. ??

It means that when I run my recovery plan, the virtual machines are started serially because they're all on the same host.

If I migrate the placeholder VM's between the other hosts in the cluster, I get a quicker recovery because the VM's start in a parallel fashion.

    DB:2.50:Hyperviser Not Runnning - Tricky Problem? m9

Not sure this is really the right place for this query, please let me know if I should post it elsewhere!

The machine is a Dell Inspiron 15R 5250 with an Intel Core i5-3210M processor and Windows 8 pre-installed, which has been upgraded to Pro.

A virtual machine was set up to run Windows XP Pro and everything seemed to work fine XP started up reliably and shut down reliably for a couple of days. Then after installing various programs in the virtual machine (nothing odd, nothing that hasnt been running reliably on another XP machine for years) I noticed that the host machine was restarting after being shut down and I had to hold down the power switch to force it to shut down. After a couple of times, it seemed normal again. Then when I tried to start the XP virtual machine I got an error message saying that the virtual machine couldnt be started because the hyperviser is not running.

Googling around shows that this is not unusual, but none of the suggested fixes have worked so far.

The virtualization option is enabled in the BIOS and the BIOS has been flashed with the latest version from the DELL website.

There seems to be no BIOS option for Execute Disable, but in the Advanced System Settings/Performance Options the Data Execution Prevention option is checked for essential Windows programs and services only.

Running bcdedit shows that the hyperviser is not in the boot sequence. Should it be added? If it was in there before, what made it disappear? I found a command online that is designed to add the hyperviser to the boot sequence, but it returned an error message (even though I entered it as the administrator).

Windows 8 continues work fine and shut down normally, its just the virtual machine that wont start.

Any help is much appreciated. Im not a power user, I should add, so I hope the fix is relatively straightforward. Im enjoying my new Dell laptop, so I want to be using it for more things.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey everyone

I am a total n00b on this forum and with VMWare Server. I am running VMWare server from an external HDD. I was able to successfully install 2 OS's (freeBSD and Solaris) as Virtual OS's with VMWare. I am running Windows XP Professional as my host OS. My problem is that later on when i try to connect to VMWare Server it asks me for a host/username/password login. Well I entered my host name and my user name and password and it prompted me with an error : failed to find host host is unknown" something of that nature. This is the same computer I ran the installation on. The only difference is that I powered down the system and disconnected the USB cord from my computer and then later on reconnected it. I have no way of accessing my virtual machines and i had to reinstall the program like 4 times and still wont work. Any help is GREATTTTTTTTTTTTLY appreciate! What should i do?

    Hi,

I'm trying to do a cold migration (Can't do a DMotion because of incompatible CPU types, even tho both are Intel Xeon) between a 2.5.2 build 16390 host and a 3.0.1 build 32039 host using VC 2.0.1.

These servers don't have shared storage (ie a SAN) - I'm not sure if thats the problem or not.

I start the migration process, the migration validates successfully. The tasks pane in VC lists "Relocate Virtual Machine Storage", and status as "In progress", though there is no progress bar. After a while I get an "Operation timed out" message.

I've tried doing a vmkping from the 3.0.1 host to the 2.5.2 host, and it works fine - I can't do it the other way around because the 2.5.2 host doesn't seem to have vmkping.

The only relevant log I can find is the /var/log/vmware/vpx/vpxa.log file on the 2.5.2 host - an extract of which is below.

VMware workstation 7.1 is installed on a Host computer running Win7 OS. This Host computer can connect to other WinXP computers on my network and those computers to it.

BUT, when start a Virtual Machine I lose connectivity from my network machines to the Host. This can happen very quickly or take some period of time. I am never sure what triggers this condition; though I believe I can force this problem by copying a large file from a network machine to the Host. Even when I can not connect to the Win7 Host, the Host can connect to the other network computers.

This kind of issue had been reported previously with the release of VMware 7 with a fix anticipated with the release of v7.1.

DB:2.50:Message: Copying "File" To Virtual Machine d3

    Hello,

I have had the message "Copying "" to virtual machine" (something like that, I don't remember the words) show many times. It can happen when I start up the virtual machine (host is Windows XP, vm is linux) or even later.

It seems that when I have copied files in host to/from external storage earlier, vmware player wants to copy it to virtual machine as well at some point later.

For example, I copied virtual machine files (over 10 GB) to a external hardisk at home. At school when I opened laptop and started vmplayer, the screen grayed out and the progress bar said it was copying the vm disk file to virtual machine? I couldn't stop it so eventually, after half an hour I killed the vmplayer process (corrupting the vm in the process so it wouldn't start again :). So I plugged the hard disk in, copied the vm files to laptop (and forgot the hard disk connected). Now when I started the vm again, it would come up and bam! Screen greyed out and the Copying file to virtual machine progress bar appeared. This time I waited until the vm disk became full and the copying was aborted.

Why is the vmplayer copying files to virtual machine without me trying to copy anything? The external hard disk was never mounted in the virtual machine, and vmplayer wasn't even running when I first copied the vm files to the external disk.

    Thanks, Tomi

I'll try to get a screenshot of the situation. (hmm... time to copy some files back and forth in Windows...)

DB:2.50:Message: Copying "File" To Virtual Machine d3

I get the same popup message with VMWARE Workstation 7.1. Seems to temporarily have stopped after I was selecting a few different options in the VMWARE Workstation menu and I am unable to recreate the problem to capture a screenshot at the moment.

What happens is that I have an Ubuntu 10.04 linux guest with "shared folders" disabled and when clicking from the desktop to the border trim of a file browser session a windows style popup would appear that would be labelled "vmware workstation" and the message would be Copying file -------------- to virtual machine. The files it would show being copied were files that I recently copied from my windows host to an external hard drive. It freaked me out and I could recreate it on the fly. But what do you know.....when I want a friggin' screenshot, now I can't duplicate it.

I need to get to the bottom of this.

I've been running Ubuntu and Windows XP in VMWare with Windows XP as the host. Even though I've installed VMWare tools, Ubuntu seems to be slower than Windows XP as a guest.

Would I get better performance if the host was Ubuntu? I.e. do virtual machines operate faster under a Linux host than a Windows host?

    DB:2.50:Performance mc

    Hi Cadour,

I too have the same problem! I wanted to move from WinXP to Ubuntu but still needed access to my VS2005 enviroment. After trying all the vmx tweaks and configs the best I could achieve was 50% of native disk performance using a raw partition access vm disk.

And yes, I do realise that using benchmark apps in a VM does not produce predictable results, but it really[/i] feels slow compared to running in a windows host, especially since VS2005 absolutely eats the disk when it's compiling an ASPX2 website on any machine/config I've come across!

    Here is my setup:

    Hardware:

    Toshiba Satellite-pro A15

    P4-2.5GHz celeron

    1Gb RAM (2x512M)

    HD 120Gb, 5400RPM, 8Mb cache

    Host A:

    WinXP SP2 clean install + VMWare WS5.5

    Host B:

Ubuntu 6.06.1 clean install using 686 kernel + VMWare WS5.5

    Guest:

    Win2K + SP4 clean install

    Benchmark:

    Sisoft Sandra 2007 (May 2006, not 2007 SP1!)

(and HDTune, but the VMWare buffering system freaks it out too much!)

All performance indexes were close to native, except the file system index.

    Sandra "File Index":

    Host A (native): 31023

Guest under Host B using virtual file: 7134

Guest under Host B using raw partition access: 15132

Guest under Host A using virtual file: 27217

Ok, so maybe the Ubuntu stock 686 kernel has a performance issue? But THAT much??? I've tried the the same using VMWare Server on Ubuntu, but there was no difference in performance (except for graphics) compare to VMWare Workstation.

Is it just a few of us having this issue, or are there many others that are getting the same problem?

Btw, under HostB (Ubuntu) hdparm -t /dev/hda gave 32M/sec - really good for this hardware config!!

    Cheers,

    Matthew

    Hi,
I've just setup my first Hyper-V virtual PC with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on the virtual host. I've setup a Virtual Switch and added it to the VM, but the VM is not even detecting the connection let alone connecting to the internet.
I've attached screenshots of my configuration, any help would be apprechiated!

DB:2.49:Hyper-V Virtual Server Wont Connect To The Internet. dd

Because you have a Physical server the hyperV host with that adapter and now a VM usingthe same adapteryou have two devices on that WAN network, does you ISP allow more than one computer connected to the WAN, i'm assuming WAN means it's the public
internet not a firewall plugged into a switch and the server also plugged into switch i.e. a LAN.
The proper way to connect only a VM directly to public internet is to do exactly what you did but disable the virtualLAN adapter on the hyper v host, this prevents public access to your hyperv host.
Because tis machine has only one adapter it's not likely it's running as your firewall so my assumption may be totally off.

DB:2.49:Help In Creating Scripted Image Redistribution Of Win2k Vm For Technician Laptops ck

Caution - Long thread, probably redundant to other threads.

Heres the scoop. we have tech laptops that get trashed on a regular basis because we add and remove applications on a regular basis due to the nature of our business. It gets to the point that they barely start and run like crud. One solution is to wipe and restore them, but then we have to reinstal our many regularly used applications. we are talking about hours per laptop, not to mention a good potential for lost customer data. I recently began the process of creating a VM Image to push to the laptops, we can trash it ll we want then copy down a new one.

Since the majority of our applications run fine on Win2k and none of us understand linux, I opted for a Win2k machine. XP reactivation limitations and system requirements factored in greatly as well.

The configuration that I want to have in the end is this"

Domain XP Pro host running as trimmed down as possible. The host runs Office and Visio, Our VPN, Our VOIP extesion and our antivirus (the less number of apps on the host the better, it keeps us techs from trashing the host)

I created a user account whos only purpose is to allow network access from the VM to a shared folder on the host. This folder is synchronized with our server and will contain any dynamic or customer data. This shared folder is mapped via the host only network in the virtual machine. Its shere name is IP based rather than hostname based to avoid any neccessary tech interaction on reimaging the guest OS.

I am hosting a master image of this machine on one of our servers running VMware Server. The Laptops all run VMware Player. I will install any neccesary applications and drivers to the master image as needed, then push it to the laptops. Any applications that the techs would like to have on their laptop will be reviewed by management, and if authorized added to the master image. Any other apps they would like to use they can install on the VM, but they will go away every time we reimage.

So I was initially planning on using a cloned image on all the machines, just downloading the VMDK files. But I have run into too many issues with networking (duplicate MACS and hostnames mainly) editing vmx files is too cumbersome, not to mention that even though we have the keys, all the imaged run with the same id. (note, I would like to reimage once a week or more since the guest wont be running any form of AV or firewall and will be exposed to many networks, so the VM wont be added to the domain)

I manually imported the Master image to a laptop, and its pretty painless to do, and it gives me my new MACs and hostnames, plus I can have each machine sing a vail cd key.

Im wondring how complicated it would be to have the following take place at night when the laptops are on the domain: Syncronize the host data folder with the server. Import the Master image (regenerated ssid, appropriate cd key, appropriate hostname, etc) to the individual laptops with each laptop getting its appropriate settings each time. I would like this to be as unattended as possible.

Each laptop has a wireless, and an ethernet interface that I would like to map to individual virtual adapters in the guest os. I also would like the host only adapter to have the same IP all the time.

I am not a script guy, though I have been trying to learn.

Anyone else have a similar situation?

I dont mind if it requires that I create a script for each laptop, if thats required.

so far the overall VM size is under 5 gig, so its a vey manageable size.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

DB:2.49:Virtual Network Summary Vmnet Question x8

When you setup a new "Host Virtual Network Mapping" and then want to remove it how do you do it? The reason I ask is because under the Summary tab (Host | Virtual Network Settings)you always see your VMNet0, etc, etc.. But even though I get rid of VMNet4 it still shows there.

Ideas on what I am missing?

    Thanks

    Hi,
·Was there any changes made prior to this issue?
Step 1: Temporarily disable the security software/firewall and check if the issue persists. If the issue does not persist, then you may want to change the setting to allow that.

Note: Ensure that it is enabled, once the troubleshooting is done so that the computer is protected.

DB:2.49:Running Virtual Machine And Cisco Vpn Client Same Host Machine, Host Cannot See Virtual Machine pm

I'm running in my PC Windows 7 a virtual machine using VMWARE WORKSTATION, I can see my virtual machine from my pc with other programs, even with a ping, but if I start my CISCO VPN client to connect to my company network, I lost connection between my PC and Virtual machine. I can back it if I disconnect cisco VPN. Are any way I can keep running both and see from my laptop (HOST) my virtual machine, like a ping or do a windows explorer?

    Hi,
Your Windows 7 question is more complex than what is typically answered in the Microsoft Answers forums. It is better suited for the IT Pro audience on TechNet. Please post your question in the TechNet Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode forums.

I did that and I am wondering this could be my fatal error
