    Hi Tom,
Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community!

From the issue description, I understand that you are having issues in installing the repeated failure updates. I will definitely help you with this issue.

    1) Have you made any changes on the computer prior to this issue?
    2) What is the exact error message you are receiving when trying to install the updates?

Step 1: Follow the steps to check for Error code:
    a) Click Start.
    b) Type Windows Update.
    c) Select View Update History.

    d) Check for failed update, right click and select view error code.

Method 1: I would suggest you to run the Microsoft FIXIT from the link and check if it helps.

Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/

    Method 2:
Step 1: I would suggest you to keep the computer in clean boot mode and check if the issue persists. A clean boot helps to verify if any third party application services or startup item is causing this issue.
You may refer the following KB article to set the computer in clean boot:
How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state?
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
Note:After you used the clean boot to resolve your problem, you can follow these steps to configure Windows XP to start normally.

    1. Click Start, and then click
    Run.
    2. Type msconfig, and then click
    OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.
    3. Click the General tab, click
Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click
    OK.
    4. When you are prompted, click
    Restart to restart the computer.

Step 2: Once the computer is set in Clean Boot mode, I would suggest you to try installing the updates manually from the link and check if the issue persists.

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/default.aspx

Method 3: If the issue persists, I would suggest you to try resetting the Windows Update components and check if the issue persists.

How do I reset Windows Update components?

I'm interested in installing Windows 7 on my Mac, but don't have enough hard drive space on my Mac partition to do so as a virtual machine - I do, though, have Vista installed on the Boot Camp partition, but am reluctant to install a beta over Vista, particularly if the beta isn't going to provide me with the Microsoft updates that seem to come every week with Vista. I'd welcome any opinions here....is a beta version of Windows 7 so good that I wouldn't miss Vista?

I have been using Vista x64 for two years, I have SP1+ and the SP2 Beta.
Tried out Windows 7 clean install on another drive and like it runs better, so I then took my SP2 Vista and upgraded that to Windows 7 beta 64-bit as well.

It has better multi-core support, performance, and runs better!!

I don't hesitate to say it is a better Vista than Vista.

Greetings. Just noticed that the latest (1/12/05) Critical Windows Updates included a malicious software removal tool. I have manually downloaded this onto my computer without any apparent problems. Iguess this tool will also be provided as an automatic update aswell? I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of just how the tool works once it is installed from the windows update site? Having read the knowledge base article on this tool, it appears that microsoft will provide a criticalupdate to this malware removal tool every month?
Thanks to all for your help.

    DB:2.74:Microsoft Malware Removal Tool Kb890830 k9

I've seen some confusion on the boards, and just wanted to clarify that the "malicious software removal tool" found in the Windows Update this month is not the same program as the Microsoft Antispyware Beta that has been in the press recently. The "malicious software removal tool" specifically targets eight worms, while the antispyware beta removes spyware (although it has a large number of false-positives in its beta form).

    Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356displaylang=en

    Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta): http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/about.mspx

On the malicious software removal tool, I do consider it poor PR management on Microsoft's part to make the log reporting opt-out instead of opt-in. My opinion (which I admit may be mistaken)is that they're using it as a means to gather data for the Microsoft anti-virus tool that they plan to start selling later this year.

On their antispyware tool, I haven't tried it yet, and don't plan to try it until the frequency of reported false-positives are greatly reduced.

DB:2.71:Why Cant I Download Updates From Microsoft p8

I have a laptop that runs Windows Vista and I haven't been able to install updates from Microsoft for very long. At first it did but one day after an update it just stopped working. It always fails and sometimes I'll get a message saying it didn't configure
so it's reverting. I solved this problem temporarily but just manually downloading the update from the Microsoft site which works but as of lately I'm getting loads of updates (like 30 at a time) and that's just too much to manually update. Also I'm running
into updates that have like different versions (like KB34567 x64 or KB34567 ie43) and I don't know which one I need. I really would like it if my computer would download these updates on their own again. Does anyone know how to fix this?

The Windows update is becoming annoying because every time I get on it says I have a ton of important updates for Microsoft but then I can't download them so it just keeps popping up.

DB:2.71:Why Cant I Download Updates From Microsoft p8

Do you get any errors related to updates?

Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
In the left pane, click View update history.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/See-which-Windows-updates-are-installed
Find an update for Windows that has failed to install, and then double-click the update to view more information.
Updates that have failed to install will display Failed under Status, next to the update name.
In the Windows Update dialog box, next to Error details, review the error code for the failed update.
Either follow the links in the Windows Update dialog box under More Information or Help and Support to try to fix the problem, and then try installing updates again by using Windows Update in Control Panel or post back with the error code so perhaps someone
may be able to assist further.

We provide VM hosting for development groups and we have a customer who wishes to review all Microsoft updates before they are applied. Right now, we are just using WSUS and applying all updates to all machines every Sunday night.
This customer wants to be able to review updates and approve or deny them to be installed. What is the best way for us to do this? I guess I could approve all needed/failed updates and then let the customer decide if they want to install it or
not, but I think the customer will want us to handle that for them.

DB:2.70:Customer Wants To Review Updates Before They Are Applied - Help! dj

We provide VM hosting for development groups and we have a customer who wishes to review all Microsoft updates before they are applied. Right now, we are just using WSUS and applying all updates to all machines every Sunday night.
Kudos to your customer for expressing a level of concern for how their development environment is modified! Such unilateral modifications can make a mess out of development efforts if the developers are unaware of such changes being made to the underlying platform.
(And grave concerns for your development customers who are obliviuos to their ever-changing development platforms!)
This customer wants to be able to review updates and approve or deny them to be installed. What is the best way for us to do this?
I guess that depends on your philosphy of service management. Personally, myself, I don't want my hosting provider messing with my platforms at all, so my advice would be to get out of the patching business and encourage your customers to provide their own
WSUS infrastructure and manage it (or at least the approvals of the updates).
On the other hand, you could simply approve only those updates that the customer approves for installation and make the customer happy.
Ultimately, of course, the question revolves around who holds the liability for security breaches or system failures or development defects caused by working on insecure or unpatched systems. If your contract indemnifies your company (and for this you should
seek corporate legal counsel; I'm not an attorney and this is not intended to constitute legal advice), then you probably ought not be in the security patching business at all. If your contract makes you exclusively liable for the security of the systems,
then it's not the customer's choice at all!Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA, MCSA

Set the intranet statistics server: https://[WSUSserver]:[port] (same as previous)Turn on recommended updates via Automatic Updates: EnabledTurn on Software Notifications: Disabled

These appear to work when the systems are connected to the domain. However, some of these are laptops, and when they are removed from our premises and returned, they come back with updates that aren't approved by our WSUS server. The most blatantly
obvious example would be that we are still running Internet Explorer 9 and have not approved updates for later versions (don't ask); however, a user that has just returned from a week-long vacation somehow has Internet Explorer 11 on his system.
Presumably the system forgets this computer-based group policy when it's not connected directly to the domain for whatever reason. Has anyone else had this issue before, and does anyone know how to resolve it?

I have been chewing the following question over for a couple of weeks:

Why does McAfee only provide one anti-virus signature update for McAfee VirusScan per day and it is released nearly at the same time every day?

McAfee has the second largest market share of the antivirus markets, however nearly every other well-known Anti-Virus vendor

provides far more than one update per day.

    For instance:

    Symantec ~230 updates/d

    F-Secure ~6 updates/d

    Kaspersky ~16 updates/d

    BitDefender ~18 updates/d

    Dr. Web ~22 updates/d

    Avira ~4 updates/d

    (source: av-test.org)

Of course, it depends on how many new malware detections there are in one update, but it is also a question how long is the time of response against new malware and vulnerabilities.

What do you say - is a single update per day enough to keep you protected against cyber threats?

    on 1/30/10 11:05:01 AM CST

DB:2.63:Is One Av Pattern File Per Day Enough? za

Here are the update frequencies: http://www.av-test.org/numbers.php .

I wrote that the malware database of Dr. Web increases by at least 2 500 new detections per day.

I have also read about the Artemis technology of McAfee Online Threat Intelligence web community.

But the point is that I can have my computer protected by some free antivirus scanner firewall, and that way be protected againt the most well-known worms, viruses and spyware. But if I pay for an antivirus software, I expect to be protected not only against the most notorious online threats but also against other kinds of unwanted programmes.

I keep getting these updates although I uninstalled microsoft office a long time ago. Every time I try to install them, it fails because it isn't installed anymore. How can I get them to stop?

DB:2.62:Getting Error 0x80070643 When Trying To Install Microsoft Office Updates f3

    Hi Squigman,

The above article does not apply to your situation. You're getting this because Office was uninstalled so the updates won't install and you're getting the updates because something about Office didn't completely uninstall and is still generating the need
    for updates.

Did you install the Office Compatibility Pack? If so, you need to uninstall that as well as that will generate updates. Do you have any Office Viewers installed - they too could be getting updates. Also any proofing tools or Outlook Connector could still
be installed (and would not have been removed when uninstalling Office) - they too would need to be removed. Check Control Panel / Programs and Features to see what is still installed and install anything that was missed when you uninstalled Office itself
but was installed separately and thus needs to be uninstalled separately.

If you had Office 2007, here's the manual uninstall procedure which should remove any remnants left behind by the normal uninstall process:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218. If you had Office 2003 or 2010, then here's an article to assist you:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.

    I hope this helps.

DB:2.62:Is There A Way To Prevent Storing Updates Locally On The Sccm 2012 Sup? zf

    Good morning,
Sorry for the long post. I am integrating my WSUS server into SCCM 2012. I run most updates for Windows, Office, and MSSQL. I used the default automatic approval rule when setting WSUS up for simplicity. Previously to avoid updates
filling up local disk I told WSUS not to store updates locally. However, now that I am integrating into SCCM 2012 it forces updates to be stored locally. So I come in the next morning and the thousands of approved updates filled up my local disk.
Additionally, from what I've read if I change the setting back todon't store locally, SCCM just checks every 60 minutes and forces it to change again.
So, I'm at a loss for what to do about machines that potentially need older updates (machines that are re-imaged using default media without updates/service packs installed). I could approve only newer updates (maybe for the last six months) to minimize
space used but that doesn't help me with scenario above.
What are other people doing to minimize disc space, but maximize available updates? Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.

DB:2.62:Is There A Way To Prevent Storing Updates Locally On The Sccm 2012 Sup? zf

When it comes to service packs for OS deployments, unless you have a compelling reason to use a pre-SP version of an OS, you should look at slipstreaming these into your imaging solution. Our process has been to maintain all of the Windows updates
in SCCM since the last build of our image. Every six months we add these updates to the image, and then we can remove them from SCCM. This way a machine will always be brought onto the network with a consistent level of patching, and SCCM will
    deploy the rest.

Obviously the file which controls the reboot is corrupt or or missing in Widows 7,. so many people are saying this i cannot understand why Microsoft is taking so long to fix it. They have fixed the compatability issue and it opens automatically to install something which is not compatible with Windows 7.

DB:2.62:Rebooting Problem In Windows 7 sx

No its just the W 7 system when i installed it it worked perfect now as each update comes along it becomes more and more unstable its obviouse there just rehashing vista drivers and that is whats causing the instability. As each update comes along it comes with a Windows test program with it so they know whats going wrong, i'll continue using but think i will have to uninstall if it will not operate any better over next week, notice how the script in this letter has changed on its own.

Micrsoft continues to put out minor fixes and updates for the RC (mostly for driver issues) - some of us have seen more as a result.  I've had driver updates for several bits of hardware, including the display, sound system, and at least one HID.  While it is likely to continue to be the case no one can say that definitively at the moment.  One thing to keep in mind though is that Vista and Windows 7 really are more secure so there are fewer security fixes.  The announced security vulnerability this week, for instance, only applies to XP and lower OSs. Stephen

    Notes on using Windows Update:
    http://www.gerryscomputertips.co.uk/WinUpdate1.htm

To troubleshoot most computer problems it helps to look at available clues in the System Information file and the Event Viewer logs. An experienced eye can pick out the needles in the haystack and
see more clearly the precise nature of the problem or problems.

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type
System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key (alternative is Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information). Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is
located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully
populated before exporting a copy. Please upload to your OneDrive (formerly Sky Drive), share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Please upload and share with everyone copies of your
System and Application logs from your Event Viewer to your OneDrive and post a link here.

To access the System log select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, from the list in the left side of the window expand Windows Logs and select System. Place the cursor on System,
select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default
evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do
not provide filtered files. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.

Have exactly the same problem that occurred on 27th April. My new Vaio Pro laptop tells me I have the latest version of Office 365 and yet all Office 365 programs tell me 'there are updates ready to be applied but are blocked ....'

Made worse that when I then follow Microsoft advice for 'online repair' I get another error message 30029-4 that doesn't tell me what the problem is or how to fix.

I am not going to uninstall and reinstall.

Microsoft fix this now. Very annoying for your premium subscription service.

Will Microsoft continue to provide updates for MSE usable on XP after April 2014 XP supprt ends?

DB:2.57:Will Updates For Mse On Xp Continue Past April 2014 xj

Until earlier this afternoon I would have agreed with the logic and thougts of those I read above,
because Windows Update has continued functioning on XPwSP3 systems after the previously announced and scheduled date ofApril 8, 2014 euthanasia of Windows XP.

Today tho 6may14, on MS Update Tuesday an update to MSE to 4.5.216.0 Antimalware Client was made available, and after thit is installedeal-time protection is blocked/stopped/turned off after the update was installed; there is also
an annotation on the MSE face when you open the icon from the systray, which reads, "Virus and spyware definitions: Up to date,
operating system support has ended" (italic and underline added me for emphasis. The page also contains the admonition, "Real time protection is turned off. You should turn it on."Well I cerainly agree,
my only question is "How?" as I've spent the afternoon trying to do it based on the past experience tweaking MSE. Haven't found anything on MS website, or elsewhere about the dynamics of turning a valid MSE installation with current definitions and the current
Antimalware Client and Engine back on as advised. Now I hope this happens the next time I restart or one of the machines with WnXPsp3 on it - will be glad to update this with better news.

My point is those five words never appeared previously - has anybody else seen them before today?

While I would not want to suggest a firm cannot move away from older products or develop newer, better products (and I don't want to debate or belabor what that means) I do begin to see a stronger and stronger pattern of not just
ending support, but actively attempting (if these five words are indicative of the fact MS has taken steps to turn off a functional product, to turn off real-time support which MSE is capable of?) to prohibit individuals who could make an informed and thoughtful
decision to continue to use Window_XP on a risk-benefit basis personally or forher or his business. Last time I checked automotive mfgrs were required to provide an inventory of parts for discontinued products for seven years after the end of support - nobody
would argue for sw support for seven years, but (no really I don't believe they would, would they?) but I don't see why MSE can't be kept active - the Antimalware Client (now 4.5.216.0 version) and Engine (version 1.1.10502.0) refer: see image above where
is landed when it was pasted in.

With the impending demise of Microsoft support for WindowsXP (and apparent refusal to provide Securities Essentials support for XP) on 8 Apr 14, does it make sense to upgrade to Windows 7? If so, how is this best done, at what cost, and how long will Microsoft
provide Windows 7 program updates and security support?

    DB:2.57:Windows Xp Upgrade To Windows 7 3k

    Hi,

You can't upgrade to Windows 7 or windows 8/8.1 with all Computer/Laptop models.

A lot of older machines, including the one I am posting this reply from, are not compatible with later Operating Systems.

If your friends decide to upgrade, tell them to follow these steps before wasting their money.

Follow these steps before you buy Windows 7:

Go to your Computer / LaptopManufacturer's website and see if Windows 7 Drivers are available for your Make and Model Computer / Laptop.

If not available, Windows 7 will notwork correctly for you.

Run the "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor"
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20

Check to see if your System Specifications are compatible for Windows 7:
    "Windows 7 system requirements"
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/system-requirements

"Windows 7 Compatibility Centre" for Software and Hardware:

    "Installing and reinstalling Windows7"
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7

    ______________________________________

Follow these steps before you Upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Check to see if your Computer/Laptop Manufacturer has Windows 8 Drivers available for your Model.
If not available, Windows 8/8.1 will not install and work correctly for you.
There is a lot of information in this first Microsoft link:

Download and run the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant to see if your machineis Windows 8.1 compatible and read the Update to
    Windows8.1: FAQs there

    Hi,

If you receive Windows Update error 80070103 while installing updates, you might be trying to install a driver that is already installed on your computer or a driver that has a lower compatibility rating than one you already have installed. To find more
information or to get help, try these options:

    a) If you want to install the latest driver for a specific device, program, or game, try manually updating the driver instead of using Windows Update. For more information, see

    b) To hide the update so it is not offered again, click the plus sign (+) under the title of the update, and then select the Don't show this update again check box.

You can follow the steps given in the link.

DB:2.56:As A Workstation, Ws 2008 R2 Loses Visual Effects Settings On Reboot 9f

Some background: I use Windows Server 2008 R2 as a desktop operating system on my development workstation. Enabling Aero and related services makes it look, feel, and behave a great deal like Windows 7. That is, it's like Windows 7 with the capabilities
    of Windows Server.
I do development using a regular user account and only use the administrator account when necessary.
The problem: A small frustration is that on every reboot--say for installation of Windows updates--the Visual Effects settings (in the Performance Options dialog) for my user account are lost. In order to restore the visual effects after
a reboot, I must open the System control panel, select Advanced Settings, provide my very-long administrator password, open the Visual Effects dialog, and then select Adjust for best appearance.
The settings are then enabled for the duration of the session, which is likely several weeks long since I do not power down this workstation.
I suspect this usage pattern is somewhat unusual and it simply isn't being tested by Microsoft. But that said, I'm a little surprised I can't find any similar reports on these forums or elsewhere on the web. After all, using Windows Server as
a workstation is fairly commonplace, especially among developers.
Does anyone have a work-around or fix for this?
It's a fairly minor nuisance but it's a nuisance nonetheless. Thanks!

I was asked to identify my Product No, which I retrieved from my computer and typed it in. I press the button to proceed to the next stage, but got an answer back stating my Product Identification Number was no longer valid. I repeated step 1 by choosing the
uption to let Microsoft to scan my computer for the product identification number, and got the same answer.
I purchased my Windows7 Home Premiumon Jan 2010, does this mean I can no longer get support from Microsoft?

The problem that I have is of a minor nature, and I have tried the recommendation to resolve the problem that I got from the community at Microsoft Answers, but with no success. My problem in short is: Almost every other day, the size of the icons on my

decrease the font and text size, but it does not resolve the persistent problem I have faced for quite a long time.
I do getautomatic updates from Microsoft. I have two Dell Vostro 1510 laptops, with the other nonproblem one having Windows7 Home Premium, family pack that I purchased Jan 2012.

In summary, I would like to have Microsoft Support look at the problem that I face and get a fix. Although the problem is more a nusance than anything else, it is an irritation that I would like to resolve. Prior to having Windows7, I had Windows Vista as
the operating system, and did not experience this problem.
I was thinking that perhaps reinstalling my original Windows7 may be helpful, but I am unsure if this would work. Or should I possibly reinstall Windows7 using my family pack purchased in Jan of this year?
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

I do applaud the community at Microsoft Answers for being so always interested in helping so many people.

I do all the software updates via stand-alone updates. Then when I have everything, and the system is backed up first, I make sure the primary drive is okay (or run fsck and Applejack) before applying anything.

Is it possible that your network settings need changing? that your modem or router/switch are the issue? I assume you would use either modem/router/switch or some combination.

Also, the amount of memory affects how long it takes to apply and optimize updates, as well as the speed of the boot drive, how much free space etc.

DB:2.55:Trying To Download 6 Microsoft Office Updates And I Get Error Code 646 jj

    Hi,
Here's what I recommend you to do:
    1. Turn off UAC (Do this if you're using Vista or Windows 7, otherwise, proceed to Step # 2). Don't just lower down the restrictions - turn it off completely.
    2. Restart your computer for the change to take into effect.
    3. Re-download Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB982331) from the link below:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7f89a734-cda4-4abb-9a10-f6dfe560e8d0displaylang=en
    4. Install it. It should be working fine.
    5. If it still does not work, try to open any or all of your MS Office applications (like MS Word, MS Excel, etc).
    6. Follow Steps # 3-4.
    7. If it still does not work, follow step # 3 again. After downloading it, try to disconnect your computer from the internet (either unplug the internet cable or turn off the modem). Then, try to install the downloaded (KB982331). It must be working this time.
Do the same for all the updates that come along with KB982331, IF ANY.
    Let me know your findings.

I have searched throughout Microsoft and just keep getting sent in circles with no answer on the Service Pack 3. Microsoft does say that you should update from SP2 because it's support will be terminated in July. I updated to SP3 awhile ago. I just can't
find any date that they are ending support for SP3.

    Hello basha23640.
First of all, try using the Windows Update automatic troubleshooter: you can find it at
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/.
If this doesn't fix your issue, you could try resetting the Windows Update components: read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article

Windows 8 is not happy with you either.
Well i find edz20's joke not very funny in fact Windows 8 does have some serious issues that need to be panned out and should have been done so before the consumer paid for the nightmare! I can repair Windows 8 or any other operating Microsoft operating system
but for the Consumer this is a serious issue and should not have to pay for a half baked operating system!

Every time I try to install an update through Windows Update, I get the same error: 0x8000FFFF. I have tried the solution given

DB:2.53:System Update Updates Microsoft Windows 7j

Every time I turn off my computer, windows automaticupdate turns itself off. I have to turn it back on every time I restart the computer.

DB:2.53:System Update Updates Microsoft Windows 7j

    Hi Darryl,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forums.

As per the description provided, I understand that Windows Update will be turned off automatically after every reboot. I will certainly help on this issue.

This issue may occur due to many reasons likewise, third party application, antivirus program and infected virus.

I appreciate if you could help me with more information.

    1. Which version of Windows are you using on the computer?
    2. Did you make any changes on the computer prior to this issue?

I would suggest you to try these methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and check.
    Open the Windows Update troubleshooter
    http://Windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

    Method 2
Try installing the update in a Clean Boot state.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a Clean Boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: After Clean Boot troubleshooting step, refer to “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with Clean Boot”
    from the article.

Method 3: Disable the security software temporarily and try to update.
    http://Windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows7/Disable-antivirus-software
Note: Antivirus software can help protect the computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable the antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it
to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time the antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Method 4
I would suggest you to scan your computer with Microsoft Safety Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Get back to us for any issues related to Windows Update on Windows 7 computer. We will be happy to help you.

DB:2.53:More Than 100 Updates In A Deployment? cd

Hello, A long time ago, when I was first learning SCCM2007, I read a guide (I believe from Microsoft) that recommended packages contain no more than 500 updates, and deployments not more than 100.  After some experience, I can fully understand the package recommendation (updating one with 400+ without binary differential replication, ouch), but now I'm running into a problem with the 100 on deployments.I usually keep deployments called Enforcement ## (## being a number), each containing 100 updates each so that new computers that come into our system get patched with past updates.  I so want to consolidate these into one deployment every Tuesday when I have to empty them individually of expired and superseded updates.I don't have any more than 500 systems at my site.  Is there any reason I shouldn't consolidate them into one deployment? Thanks!

DB:2.53:More Than 100 Updates In A Deployment? cd

I think the 100 updates per deployment was a guideline for a while. - though now I think the recommended is something like 350 now but don't quote me.  I personally stick all Security and Critical updates in one giant deployment containing all old updates and then create a new deployment each month for the new updates on Patch Tuesday.  The giant sustainer package has a deadline in the past to update any new computers wandering onto network.  The Patch Tuesday deployment has a two week deadline to give everyone a bit of a heads up on the looming deadline and give them time to either install beforehand or not complain to me when the get rebooted in two weeks.thx, Eric

    DB:2.53:Compact 7: Is It Really Ready ? f7

    Hello,
Our company is working for a long time with WinCE. We have started with CE 2.12 and moved to every new version. Now we want to move to Compact 7. But every day we are working with this version, we find new problems.
    A few examples:
    * long build time
    * huge memory requirements
    * problems in the buld system
    * new SKUs
    * no support for VOIP
    * VS2010 is not supported
So from our point of view, it looks like MS has decided to give the actual state of a NOT finished project to customers.

For us, Compact is nor useable at the moment.
Hopefully MS will provide some updates to make Compact 7 a successful porduct.
    Regards
    Holger

    DB:2.53:Compact 7: Is It Really Ready ? f7

    Toolchain depends on your requirements.
WEC7 supports some new features that aren't available within previous versions - muticore and RAM memory upto 3GB. Also, VS2008 works much faster than VS2005 during Debug mode.

But other side is numerous Known issues (check WEC7 release notes).
We are in contact with MS support team concerning some issues, they promise to release first update not early than August-September.

DB:2.53:How Long Do You Configure Maintenance Windows For? 1a

I'm in charge of patching my company's servers, and I want to use maintenance windows. But my outage window is typically only a couple hours to patch. When I align my maintenance windows with that (2 hours), some updates won't install. If Microsoft gives
every update a default of 35 minutes before it even installs, if a month has more than 3 updates I will be over that threshold and some updates won't install.
I am aware that I can deploy updates with the ignore maintenance window option, however I'd like to see what other folks are doing: How long are you making your maintenance windows? Do you deploy with the option to ignore those windows
in order to get everything compliant?
    Thanks

DB:2.53:How Long Do You Configure Maintenance Windows For? 1a

Also, don't forget to account for your reboot settings being pushed to your servers through Client Settings. Whatever timer you have set for reboots needs to fit inside your maintenance window as well.

DB:2.52:So Many People With Microsoft Office 2013 Issues... 7z

Microsoft Office 2013 has become such a foul experience for our company and our clients that we've been gung-ho in pushing LibreOffice + Google Apps to whomever will take it and we advise every client that Office 2013 has issues like the following, so they
don't blame IT providers for Microsoft's issues.

Almost every single one of our client sites at one time or another in the past few months has had random Microsoft Office 2013issues that come out of left field:

Outlook simply won't start so we have to reinstall the product and then it works fine thereafter, without changing anything with the mail configuration"Sorry, we ran into a problem" with an obscure error codearequest to re-activate has engagedyou click ona MicrosoftOffice product that was working yesterday and this morningofficeclicktorun.exe is running in the background and no amount of rebootingwill solve the issue.Getting your new Office ready for you. Hold on, this should only take a few moments... (forever)

For many of our clients, especially those in rural Ontario with line-of-sight internet, this is the worst experience one could have on a Monday morning since it takes so long to repair the issue via internet connectivity.

My question is, are these regular issues caused by Office updates of some sort?

Or is there anyone that can provide advice as to how we, as IT providers, can disable whatever it is that keeps breaking Microsoft Office 2013? We never have any issues with Office 2010, you basically install it and it works. Microsoft Office 2013 continuously
stops working and requires service for no explainable reason.

Or in other words, can anyone advise as to how Microsoft Office 2013 can be tweaked so it becomes as reliable as previous versions of Microsoft Office? We're seriously getting sick of clients yelling at us because Microsoft Office 2013 has decided it wants
    to be reinstalled.

    Hey Rhab,

I think the people saying "MSE will be in Windows 8" really mean that "MSE
functionality will be included in Windows 8 (because it will be part of Windows Defender)". I think it's just a way a phrasing things by people who either don't understand or are not very good at writing that simply adds to the confusion.

We've seen much that says Windows Defender in Windows 8 will include AV protection. We also know that, historically speaking, running MSE and Defender together is problematic. I would expect this to be even more the case with a revised Windows Defender
that includes an AV component as well (and will no doubt use the same definitions from MMPC). I can't see any rational reason to include MSE in Windows 8 if Windows Defender is what they say it's going to be.

Then again, if Windows Defender is only going to include nothing more than the MSRT, then it really won't be satisfactory and a real AV/AM/AS program like MSE will be needed. If that's true, then MSE may actually be included (but with Defender presumably
disabled) or still needed. I'm honestly not certain and the rumors are flying. I guess we'll find out when everyone else does since early notification of such things doesn't happen very often here contrary to what one might expect.

DB:2.52:Updates From Microsoft Update And Wsus s3

    All,
Does anyone know how exactly Forefront 2010 will behave if Updates from Microsoft Update is enabled in a policy when a WSUS server is used to approve updates? We have some picky software that requires us to test MS Updates to ensure that they don't
cause problems. We'd really like to have our users get definition updates while off-campus, but don't want to enable updates from Microsoft Update if the computer will check and retrieve all available updates before we would otherwise be able to test
    them.
So, does enabling updates from Microsoft Update while a WSUS server is used restrict updates to just Forefront when the WSUS server is not reachable, or will the computer download and install all of the available updates from Microsoft Update that have not
been approved on our WSUS server?
Thanks to anyone who can provide an answer.

DB:2.52:Updates From Microsoft Update And Wsus s3

If it can't reach WSUS it will use Microsoft Update (if both selected), so it doesn't/ can'tcheck with WSUS then weather the update was approved or not...My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/

DB:2.52:How Do I Uninstall Windows Search And Return To Original Search m1

Indexing (Windows Search indexing I presume) takes much too long, along with updates for Microsoft Security Essentials, it takes 30 minutes plus every time the system is started.

DB:2.52:How Do I Uninstall Windows Search And Return To Original Search m1

If you have installed Windows Search 4.0, you can uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. There will be an entry for it. If you don't see it, then this thread has various methods for uninstalling it:
    http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.generaltid=373c94bd-9cf1-4b4f-b971-efdc312506c7cat=en_US_d02fc761-3f6b-402c-82f6-ba1a8875c1a7=encr=sloc=en-usm=1p=1
However, although I don't like Windows Search 4.0 it certainly should not take 30 minutes for your computer to be usable. Please troubleshoot by making sure the computer is virus/malware-free:
    http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware
If the computer proves clean and the problem persists, manage your Startup to see what is causing the holdup:
    StartRunmsconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get a dialog saying you've used
the Utility. Just tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes. Instead, use StartRunservices.msc [enter]and do not stop any services unless you really, really know what you're doing.

    DB:2.52:Issue With Windows 7 Updates. 13

I am receiving Windows updates every couple of days on my laptop computer. The updates are for all products, including Windows 7, and Microsoft Office, Java, etc. I have turned off the Automatic Update feature because these updates are so disruptive.

    DB:2.52:Issue With Windows 7 Updates. 13

What you are seeing is the effect of other problems, and unless you can identify them and tell somebody here, it will be difficult to solve.

What you could do is start over with a clean install, a fresh start after which you set up a process whereby the system is checked regularly for errors, malware etc, and where no utility is used other than what is in Windows already.

How do you feel about that?

DB:2.52:Do I Need Norton Virus Protection As Well As Microsoft Security Essentials dx

I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials some time ago; but I keep getting pop-ups telling me that they cannot provide protection against viruses because they haven't got an up to date virus something -or-the-other.
Two pop-ups appear, one after the other, both have an error number. If I follow the instructions I always come back to a selection of Norton anti virus packages which have to be paid for, which I do not want. This is why I had Microsoft SecurityEssentials
installed, because I was sick of seeing these things and trying to follow the instructions always with the same results.
Recently I clicked on something in Notebooks and saw a long list of the times the requests had been made by Norton to me to get their updates - it was very verylong.
I don't know what this is all about - what does this mean? I am finding this more than an irritation. These pop-ups come on every time I start the computer up. Can I stop this? Do I need Norton and Microsoft - I understood that all previous protection
would be obsolete when I dowloaded Microsoft SecurityEssentials.

DB:2.52:Install Updates From Sce For New Pcs (A Manual Way?) 1f

    Hi.
Is there a way to install the updates that are on the SCE server to a new PC without using the 'Updates' feature? (Like the local server's web site)

I have to configure a new PC every couple of weeks (sometimes several) and I don't want to clog our T1 and I don't want to wait for the Microsoft Update site to download. (some of these need about 700MB of updates.

I'm looking for something faster. If I use SCE for a single PC, I have to change the settings in AD and then push the updates to the PC and this takes too long.

    Thanks for any assistance.

DB:2.52:Install Updates From Sce For New Pcs (A Manual Way?) 1f

If, you mean without installing the agent... then:

Log on to the SCE server
    Run regedit
    Browse to: HKLM=SOFTWARE=Policies=Microsoft=Windows
Right click on the key 'WindowsUpdate' and then click on Export
    Save the registry key
Copy the registry key to the new machine
Run the reg file and import the data
    Reboot

The new machine is now pointing at the SCE server for updates.
