I have about9 31/2" floppy discs from a PC at previous employer which was running Windows 2000. I am now working on Dell Dimension 3000 runningMS XP 2002 Home Edition. Floppies are different brands - Radio Shack, Memorex, Imation, etc. 3 of the discs open - the rest get message "The disc in Drive A is not formatted - do you want to format it now" and of course if you click "yes" it says "formatting will erase all data" Is there anyway to retrieve info on discs...even if it's text only. Thanks!

DB:3.43:Driva A Disc "Not Formatted" - How Do I Salvage Document??? ad

Although this is not a CD issue, my suggestion would be to try an older computer to retrieve the data from these disks. You might try searching the internet for utilities that can salvage data from damaged floppies.

And obviously, never, ever use a floppy for important files ever again.

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 desktop with a DVD+-RW drive. I am currently trying to back up my hard drive with Sony DVD+R DL discs. I was wondering whether or not these discs are compatible with my DVD drive. More specifically, can my DVD drive read dual-layer discs? My computer is 2-3 years old, not the most recent version of the 9100. It has 512 MB of RAM; I bought it before Dell upgraded the RAM to 1 GB.

The specs for your drive are here. It can read either -R or +R DL discs, but can write only +R DL discs. Those Sony discs should be ok, but as I said above, check to see if they are Ritek or MKM.

I've recently been plagued by STOP errors, and it seems that every time I fix one issue, a thousand more pop up, and all I want to do at this stage is do a clean systems restore so my Dimension 5150 will be back to the way it was the day I bought it. However, I've a major problem. I don't get the Dell splash screen. At one stage I had the Vista RC2 on my PC in a dual-boot configuration, but it was terrible so I deleted it (formatted the partition and merged it with the XP partition). However, to this day I get the Boot to Vista or Older version of Windows Screen. I've tried removing it (by following the steps on this page http://www.istartedsomething.com/20060622/installing-and-uninstall-vista-beta-2-for-dual-boot-with-xp/ but when I try step 3 in the uninstall section, I get a Not a Valid Win32 application. I'm at my wits end: All I want is a clean system, but I just cant get it. Foolishly, I opted not to get backup discs when I bought it, and my only option is the Dell system restore (Which I do have: I used it shortly after receiving it to make sure I knew what to do in an emergency). Also, is there any reason why I've been redirected too the USA community forums rather than the Irish ones?

    Hi folks,

First post here, so go easy on me!

My machine, as above, has the original 60Gb hard drive ( shipped January 2003 ), and all is OK. However, a friend of mine bought a Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 160Gb 3.5 PATA Internal Hard Disk Drive for his pc, which is no longer required. This is the item. Can I use it on my D2350? The only upgrades I have done to my machine are a RAM ( to 1Gb ) and of course XP to SP3.

I have the reinstallation discs that shipped with the pc, and the XP Reinstallation disc is SP1.

I read that the 2350s originally shipped with 120Gb max hard drives? As my BIOS has not been upgraded since new, would it be able to handle 160Gb capacity?

I really would appreciate any advice offered.

    Hi Alimose,
The problem is, that Dell modifies thier version of XP so that the Product Key will only work with thier version. So using your fiends version of XP, would most likely not work as the Product Key will probably be rejected.

I have a Dell XPS 200that originally shipped with WindowsMedia Center and I now want to put XP Pro on it. I ordered what I thought was a full version of XP Pro, but the company shipped a re-installation CD instead (OEM) for a non-specific Dell PC. Since this can't be used for a fresh install, I decided to install XP Pro on the XPS from a CD that I currently have on an old Dimension and then remove it from the Dimension. My questions are: (1) can I use the OEM version of XP Pro for my old Dell? I've checked the product key with Dell and they say it is a legal copy. (2) Can I move XP Pro from the old Dimension to the XPS or do I have to buy another copy of XP Pro?

    Thanks

Thanks for the replies. rickmktg, yes it is a retail version of XP Pro, so I should be ok there.I've done some more digging, however, and found that Windows MCE *will* support Visual Studio .NET and you can develop ASP applications on it. You just can't host applications on a PC running MCE. As for the Active Directory part, I really don't need that. So, it looks like I will keep MCE on my new PC and keep XP Pro on my old PC. I'll be returning the OEM disk for a refund.

Thank you both for your replies. I have successfullyreformattedmy pc now following the page that Bevdirected me to.

Firstly, let me explain, yes it might seem silly to format a new pc but i did not want a lot of the junk that was installed on there. Also i wanted to split my 250gb partition into3 partitions. I hade tried partition magic and some help fromthis forum but it appears that i was not able to partition my drive. Thats my reasons for reformat.

I was a little confused as to exactly what RAID was and if i am right i now know that it basically joins 2 or more hard drives together so the pc treats them as one. Is that correct.

Also to use RAID you need 2 or more hard drives.

My pc is now set up and the The cmos is nowset to RAID Autodetect/ ATA. Cansomeone please explain to me what the difference is between:

    RAID Autodetect/ AHCIand RAID Autodetect/ATA

    Please, i would be grateful.

Also with these settings is my pc now running at it most optimum. What i mean is i haven't slowed it down at all.

I thought that the issue might lay more in a reg key for the iTunes app itself. The only reason I say this is that iTunes worked fine on this machine previously to a new image being installed about two months ago. DB:2.94:Bad Card Slot Or Xp Conflict On Dell Dimension 5100?? 8m

Every since I have had my Dell 5100 (2 yrs) it has never had good signal with Linksys router. The same adaptor works fine in another PC in same location using same signal. I would periodicallyhave to Repair to find IP address.Changing signals did not help much, if any. Limped along and it finally died....blue screen of death with message that the adaptor card was the problem. Took it out and PC works great. But new wireless card again has very low signal and cannot stay connected. This tells me that there is either a Dell problem or an XP problem. Any guidance here?

DB:2.94:Bad Card Slot Or Xp Conflict On Dell Dimension 5100?? 8m

Whats the model number of your adapter. As you mentioned that the same adapter works fine on different computer, but on Dell computer you are unable to connect to your network. I think it would be the problem with XP OS installed on your computer. May you can download a registery Cleaner on your computer, its a free utility available on Internet and once you scan you computer with registery clearner after this you can Uninstall and Reinstall the drivers on your computer for that adapter and check if you are able to go online.

I would suggest running diagnostics on the drive ... if your drive is bad, it could be corrupting files. Boot to the diagnostics during POST, or download the 32-bit Diagnostics from the Support Site.

I hope this is the correct place to post this.... I have 1 of the HP CD-RW discs (part number C4438A) and for some reason it is the only disc that I can use in a Dell Dimension 4400 pc cd-rw drive and have it work properly. I have tried using Imation, PNY, Verbatim and Sony but when I burn an .iso image with any of those discs it will not work properly in the desktop but if I put that disc into any other pc there are no problems. If the .iso is burned on the HP disc then use it in the Dell there is not issue but that is the only disc that seems to work properly in that drive. I can burn cd-r discs with no issue (no matter the brand) but if I want to use a cd-rw disc the only one that works properly is the HP c4438a disc. (I am guessing that this particular drive simply does not like any other type of disc when burning cd-rw's???)

The drive in that pc is LG cd-rw CED-8080B. I would like to get some more of the cd-rw discs for use in that pc but that particular part number has been discontinued. Is there any way to find out if the newer CD-RW discs from HP will be compatible or am I just wasting more money on more discs that won't work properly in that drive. As I said, as far as cd-r discs go any of them will work - the problem is when I try to use the cd-rw discs that there are problems.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Can someone point me in the right direction regarding a strange fault on my Dell Dimension 3000 PC. It is fitted with a Samsung SC-148A Cd Player. The drive recognises all CD`s and auto runs them, except for the Installation CD for my ISP Despite trying 3 discs it keeps asking for a disc to be inserted. All of these 3 discs auto run with no problems in other PC`s. I have looked on the Samsung support pages and also this forum with no success. Any advice would be appreciated. Sid.

    DB:2.92:Cd Player af

Hi Osprey, many thanks for your help, when I looked into the PC it also is not bootable so I do not know if this works or not. However I copied the files from one of the three installation discs which did not work and added a large video file, inserted into the CD drive and magic it worked. Perhaps not the most elegant solution but it was an alternative. Best regards,

There's nothing specific to Dell about the Windows disc that shipped with the system. Are you sure you have the same version of 98 (original or SE)?, and are you sure the files are Windows files?

Are you up to date on Windows critical patches, with current antivirus and firewall software, and have you scanned for spyware?

In 2005 I purchased a Dell Dimension 9100. The Windows XP was already installed and the discs were not sent. I have the Key Code attached to the computer. I now need those discs to try and repair my computer but Dell refuses to send me replacement discs
as the computer is out of warranty and wants to charge me for the program, which in reality is my property. I can't write to Microsoft without paying $ 50.00 for them to answer an email. What can I do to get my program from Dell or a solution from Microsoft
and get my computer fixed? Dell has stopped responding to my emails after I provided them with the Service Tag, the original Order Code etc..

DB:2.91:Need Replacement Discs For Xp And Dell Wont Ship za

You have no choice but to purchase a copy of Windows XP if Dell will no longer send you one for free. Your support was with Dell, not Microsoft. If you want a local tech to install Windows for you, s/he will have Dell installation media to use (not to
sell you). That might cost less than purchasing a full retail copy of XP from Amazon or NewEgg. If you go to a local tech, don't use a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. Get recommendations from family, friends, colleagues.

On the working system download and installa product key finder. Then compare the key number with the key number on the installation CDs. Once you have matched the keys for one system's CD you will know what CD belongs to the other one. Click here for a download of the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder. The utility will also report the product key on some versions of Microsoft Office as well.

Try plugging the keyboard receiver into another USB port.  On some Dell models there is one USB port that is active all the time so that the keyboard can be used to enter the BIOS and for re-installing Windows or making repairs to it.  Otherwise the rest of the USB ports are inactive until Windows loads the necessary drivers.  First try using one of the ports on the back of the tower.  On some models the active port is the one on the upper right.

I have been using Airport Express (AE)for over two years without a problem. During this time I have been able to upgrade and configure the unit without problems.

Recently I had to re-install windows. Therefore I needed to re-configure the AE. From the apple website I downloaded two firmwares for the AE: 6.1.1 and 6.3. I also needed the AE Admin Utility. I only found the "Airport Extreme Admin Utility 3.2"

    So, here what I did:

    1) I installed firmware 6.3. Then I installed the Admin Utility mentioned above. The Utility found my AE but everytime I press configure it asked for a password. Since I did a hard reset in the AE the "admin" password should have worked but it didn't. (BTW, I re-started the PC and the AE many times, and re-installed the above software several times). But I was not able to configure the AE.

    2) I then tried firmware 6.1.1 and with the same Utility I was able to configure the AE. I was able to name the AE (i.e. Living Room) and enter WEP password. However I didn't find the option to "Join wireless network" which I think is necessary. This did happen because I was using a Airport EXTREME Utlity? If so, where I can downoad the Airport EXPRESS Utility?

    Any takers?

Disk #3 (the DVD) you received is the full MCE disk. The Resource CD will have all your drivers and the Dell CD has all the Dell specific stuff, which you may or may not want to install. I didn't bother.

You'll have to reinstall any apps that came with your computer, like the Sonic stuff, Creative programs, office apps, etc.Hopefully you have those CD's from your original purchase. And there will still be a bunch of Windows updates you'll need to download.

The versions supplied are "OEM" and normally OEM versions do not have written (paper) documentation. However, many commercial programs no longer have any written documentation, other than a short how to install page, with them and the users are stuck with just the help files.

I installed MS Office Professional on a PC for a customer about a year ago. There really wasn't any documentation to speak of with that other than the help files. If you want to know how to run MSWord or Excel, etc you have to buy a separate book.

The 500gb.seagate HD is a 2008 model. and the 320gb.western digital is a 2009 model. Everyone says they should work, but they don't. I think they are making them incompatible with older mother boards (2006 XP MCE) so you have to buy a new PC. If any one has any suggestions, all are appreciated... Thanks.. Rick..

You can clean-install Windows XP without reformatting. Theres no need to use a utility like DBAN for a simple reinstallation; at worst, you use FIXMBR from a Recovery Console prompt to overwrite the master boot record and then repartition, which will clobber any lingering malware short of that hiding in firmware (which drive-wiping utilities cant touch, either).

Utilities like DBAN are used for wiping information from a storage device prior to its sale or transfer.

NO, you are giving the PC's static addresses, do not do that. The router address will be 192.168.0.1 and the PC's will automatically get addresses from the router so to configure TCP/IP you mark the setting to "Receive An Address Automatically". There should be no numeric values on that page whatsoever.

If you go to a command command prompt and type "ipconfig" with the quotes you should see an address of something like:

    IP Address: 192.168.0.100

    Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DB:2.85:Legit Product Key But Windows Xp Will Not Install xm

I was recently given a Dell PC with Windows XP Professional installed on it. The CPU has the Microsoft Product Key sticker on it but I was not given any software discs . . . with the Dell. I planned on a new, fresh install for the Dell and would use the 2nd copy of Windows XP (the Product Key License is for 2 CPUs) and the second copy on my Mac using virtualization software. Since the Dell did not come with any discs I planned on using a Windows XP Professional install disc I had laying around and using the Product Key from the sticker on the Dell.

So, I have an old Windows XP Pro install disc (full copy-not upgrade) and a legit XP Pro Product Key. So, after I reformatted the internal drive of the Dell and started the fresh install of XP Pro I got to the 'Enter Product Key' info and it was denied - even after multiple tries.

    My questions:
    1) What am I doing wrong?
    2) Is it possible the XP Pro disc I have contains a different Service Pack (SP) identifier than the Product Key?
    3) Is each individual XP Pro install disc unique to each Product Key and will only work with that product key? - and therefore I am SOL without the original Dell XP disc?

    Thanks in advance

DB:2.85:Legit Product Key But Windows Xp Will Not Install xm

RDG... Do the following with the disk and you can find the "hidden" CD key that Microsoft has embedded on the disk itself. Use that key and you should be able to load the program.

    1) Insert Windows XP cd into a working computer.
    2) Exit the Autorun introduction.
    3) Open "My Computer"
    4) Right Click on the Windows XP cd-rom drive and select explore.
    5) Open the USWXP32P_ZX folder.
    6) Open the sysprep folder.
    7) Open unattend.txt

Your CD's product key is contained within the unattend.txt file.

Note: On some system disks, USWXP32P_ZX is a hidden folder. If you cannot locate the folder, you may also search for unattend.txt and mark "Search Hidden Files".

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 that is currently running 1gb RAM andI want to put in the maximum which is 4gb. I see that my 32-bit XP wil only recognize 3gb so it is worth it to actually put in 4gb or just upgrade to 3gb? Right now it is running the1gb off (2) 512 mg modules but each of the four slots can handle 1gb each. Also would it be best to buy all new modules instead of trying to mix new and old?

DB:2.85:Upgrading Ram Question On Dell Dimension 8400 d3

I would just go ahead and buy 2x2GB kit, that way if you decide to move to windows 7 or something down the road you will be ready for x64 OS with a full 4GB.

And yes, it's best to not mix memory when possible, so you would be better off with all new and just sell the old or keep it as spares.

I am also having problems with burning audio CDs. I get the same error 4251 that others have reported in this discussion. My system worked up until about a month ago, then started producing these messages on every attempt to burn. It also makes the CD unusable, so this costs me money. I can burn CDs from Windows Media Player, and can also burn video DVDs successfully.

Any help I can get (there is none from Apple as I don't have an iPod) will be appreciated. I have checked everything the discussion group suggests, and have spoken with Apple support, who cannot answer my specific questions.

Sounds insane but will it work? Worse comes to worse I can just re-image my Dell with my backup.

Then it just might work! If you have a current image of the XP box so you can revert back if you have too then I'd give it a shot...

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 and recently reinstalled Windows XP from a different disc than the one given with my computer (I lost it) in hopes that it would restore the computer and I could start from scratch. Well I have started from scratch but all the old files are still here and I just want it back to the way it was when I bought it. So then I found out about the Symantec Dell PC Restore function but I can't use it because the screen to press Ctrl+F11 no longer comes up because of my reinstallation of the OS.
So tell me how I can use the PC Restore function in my current state. I have called Dell and asked for a replacement XP disc (again, in hopes that it would restore my computer to normal) and it should arrive soon but I haven't recieved it yet. If I reinstalled the OS from the disc that Dell gives me will the screen to press Ctrl+F11 come up? But if there is a way to do it without having to wait for the disc to arrive I would like to try it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and if I am just out of luck on this, than do they still make restore discs that I could call and get? I got those with my Dell laptop once and I used them quite a few times.

I have 2 Dell towers; one is the 8300 I use now, the other is an 8200 which I had problems with since Christmas of 2003. It kept blue screening, and I was unable to do anything about it... Now, I am trying to get this 2nd PC set up to work for my girlfriend, but I have run into a problem. When I was first turning it on, it was saying that the "NTLDR is missing". From searching online, some people said this is a BIOS problem, and I tried numerous ways of resetting the BIOS, but it would still come up. I saw someone say I should try and reformat the HD then put Windows back on it. I can reformat it no problem, but anytime I try to install XP (from 2 different discs, mind you), it starts erroring. I am at the point where I finally got through an installation of the initial files, with a few errors, but now when I turn on the PC so it can start the real installation, it errors and tells me to reboot. Does anyone have an idea as to what I can do abotu this problem? Is there something wrong with my RAM? Should I just give up?

DB:2.83:Problem With My Dell Dimension 8200/Windows Xp... 3p

If you just "threw" another drive into the 8300 from a system with a far different hardware configuration, then the error message is probably not unexpected.

I suspect that the drive may be fine but that the boot files are corrupted due to the change.

    Purely speculation, mind you.

You can run quick diags on the drive (F12 at dell splash screen, arrow down to IDE diagnostics, press enter - wait 3-5 minutes for results)

Another thing the OEM Sonic burner lacks is a verify disc option. That's more useful than the jewel case insert.

I asked this question on another forum and someone else mentioned that the Windows XP discs supplied with Dell systems are tied to Dell hardware and that the Windows product key supplied with the Dell may only work with a Windows disc supplied by Dell. Anyone know about that?

DB:2.81:Can I Reinstall Windows Xp On A Dell From A Generic Oem Disc? js

Neither Dell nor Microsoft will be able to provide you with installation media as Windows XP has reached end of life.

It is of course recommended for you to migrate to a newer OS and possibly a newer computer as Windows XP is unsecure and will no longer be updated.

However if you must install it, about the only place youll get the Reinstallation CD is eBay:

P.S. The Dell Latitude D620 will run Windows 7/10 32 Bit without problem provided it has 1 GB or more RAM.

You may download andevaluate the Windows 10 Technical Preview by following the instructions here:

I would not recommend purchase of Windows 8 or 8.1 as it will be obsolete as soon as Windows 10 is released next year. You can use the Technical Preview until its fully released and take advantage of early promotions.

DB:2.81:New Motherboard And Cpu But Old Hdds. Why Wont Windows Start Or Do I Have To Reinstall It f1

I’m running a legitimate retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium on my Dell Dimension 5000 which I bought in April 2005.
I’ve just built a new pc from scratch and have taken the discs out of the Dell and put them in the new pc. Only trouble is Windows won’t start. I get to the “Windows Repair” screen and it tries for some time to repair the system but fails and then
sends a Trouble Shooting Report to Microsoft .
The SATA discs were new when I installed Windows 7 in July 2009 so there shouldn’t be any incompatibility. (I’ve also tried the original Dell disc with Windows XP on it in the new pc and this also fails to load, although it still works in the Dell.)
    The new pc is quite a step-up from the Dell - H/W is: CPU-Intel i5-750, M/Board-ASUS P7P55D Pro.
Is there anything else I can try or is the only solution to reload Windows 7?
If I do have to reload Windows 7, will it just over-write the Windows files or will it do a format and a clean load so that I’ll have to load up all my programs again?

This is the best answer. Dominic knows what he is talking about.
You DO NOT need to reinstall Windows.

Hi,I have had my Dell Dimension for nearly 2 years now,and have recently realised that I never got a copy of Windows XP home on disc for back-up purposes.Do Dell supply a back-up disc when you buy a new PC?If so and you don't receive it what do you do?Any help on this matter would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Good luck - please keep us posted on developments.

I'm writing to the company's UK Head Office (maybe copying to the BBC's WatchDog programme) because it was Dell who supplied Windows XP as part of my contract with them. Even though my computer is out of warranty, Dell - like any other company supplying UK customers - has a duty of care to its UK customers beyond that period (up to six years allegedly) and I see little evidence of it performing this duty.

Dell Dimension 8400 - Reboot Discs
I was wondering if an where I could order reboot discs for my Dell Dimension 8400.

    P4 3.0 GHz w/HT verification?
Is there ANY way to verify I indeed have P4 3.0 GHz w/HT an not just P4 3.0 GHz?

    DB:2.80:Dell Dimension 8400 j1

Hi, I have a Dimension 8400 purchased just last week and my computer came up with a windows protections files message that requested the Windows XP CD-ROM. I contacted Dell who told me that Dell do not send computers with the CD ROM disc anymore.

Instead, the hard drive 'apparently' has a partition on it, where Windows XP is stored and accessed. I was advised to ring (In the UK) Dell Software support to be told how to access it!

I have a Dell Dimension 4550 series computer that is less than 2 years old.

It has two CD drives that I use to download JPEG files to. I would like to use DVD-RW discs to download JPEG files to in order to view them on a DVD player. Will my computer accept DVD discs?

However, most DVD players will play CD as well. Check your DVD player. If it is new it should be no problem to play a CD. You will need software to create a slideshow on the CD that a DVD player can then read.

DB:2.80:Reinstalling Drivers On Dimension 2400 ck

I had virus problems and had to clean the PC of all drivers and operating system (Windows XP).

I reinstalled the drivers but the internet does not work - when I looked in device manager there was a yellow question mark alongside the ethernet and other things

I contacted Dell today (I don't have warranty) and on the chat line was told to reinstall in order. I checked the order on the website but they don't correspond with what what is on the discs I got with the PC. Can anyone translate for me please.

The website says the folowing to be reinstalled in this order:

    1. System and config utilities

    2. Chipset

    3. Video adapter

    4. Network interface card

    5. Audio adapter

    6. Modem

    7. Wireless network card

    8. Touchpad, pointer, etc

    9. Other devices.

I know I have to reinstall Windows operating system first. But as someone who knows very little about computers I can't tell which of the above corresponds with the discs I have, which are as follows:

-ResourceCD (contents: device drivers, diagnostics and utilities, computer documentation)

    - V.9X (capable)/56k DAta/Fax; modem software for MS windows (contents: Drivers, DIagnostics utilities, online docs, modem on hold)

-Dell demension euro tools system software (Disc 1 contents: top tips, web based email support, printer  scanner, anti virus software, support software, internet - ISP - software)

Disc 2 contents: support software, paintshop pro, image expert

    -Sonic record now 7.1

    - Ciberlink power DVD (contents: applications)

    - Dell colour monitor user documentation (contents: html user documentation, drivers - INF,ICM,CAT files

Can anyone please advise of what order I should reinstall these discs.

    Jill (Marton 63)

DB:2.80:Reinstalling Drivers On Dimension 2400 ck

    Greetings to you;

All the drivers except for the modem can be found on the Dell Resource Disk.  After installing Windows, put the Resource Disk into the CD drive and allow the application to install and start up.  You should wind up with a directory at the left side of the window that pops up that allows you to select the computer you are using.  After you've done that, use the menu at the top of the window to select drivers.  You should get a screen that contains a list of driver names with checkmarks on the left.  The drivers that are checked are those that the application thinks you need.  If you would rather install the latest versions, these may be found here:  Dimension 2400 Drivers

Unfortunately, they won't install automatically.  You will need to select each in turn, installing one at a time, and rebooting the computer between each and restarting the application to get to the next one.  When you double click the name of the driver, a box should appear asking if you wish to open or save the file.  Select open.  The file will be unzipped, copied to the C:\Dell\Drivers directory, and an installer program will appear on the screen.  It has been a while, but I think you still need to tell the thing that you want to install the file.

As mentioned earlier, the modem driver is not on this disk, but you should have a separate disk containing the modem driver and helper files.

The order you need to install is correct as listed in your message.  On the D2400 you may start with the chipset driver as there are no system or configuration utilities that need to be loaded.

Depending on how new your D2400 is, you will have a Windows installation disk that contains service pack 1a or service pack 2.  If you have the 1a version, you really should get the sp-2 or sp-3 update so that you can apply it when you've finished the driver installation.  If you already have sp-2 you can stick with that if you like, but you will have around 80 updates to the operating system waiting on you when you first connect to the internet.  Don't forget to install your anti-virus software before connecting, and I recommend that you update that before anything else.  Windows SP-2 has the firewall on by default, but SP-1a does not, so if you're sticking with SP-1a don't forget to turn it on.

The other disks you mention contain the application software that Dell shipped with the computer.  Some of them enable you to record to a writable CD in the CD drive, and I notice one allows you to play DVDs if the optical drive in the machine is a DVD/CD drive.  These may be installed in any order you choose.
