DB:3.71:New Xps 600 What Downloads Should I Take? jk

This is my second try at owning a new XPS 600. I had a couple problems with the first one and am now setting up the replacement. What downloads should I take from the Dell site? I see that there is one for my video card (NVIDIA 7800 GTX) Should I just assume that the downloads available for my service tag # are nessasary except when obviously not. Like printer drivers, or removeable media etc........?? But what about the Flash BIOS (BIOS: Dell Dimension System BIOS, English, XPS DXG051, A06) Should I take this one too?

    This is what I have.

Does the XPS 600's power supply have a 6-pin PCI Express cable connector? If you have a PCI Express motherboard, it would make sense to have a PCI express compatible power supply rather than using an adapter to tap into standard 4-pin molex connectors.

This might be a completely noob question but since I cant seem to find it in a search I thought I would ask.

I have an xps 600 (p4 630, 2gb, nvidia 6800) Windows Vista is behaving really sluggish, yes I did the upgrade and I realized there are problems inherent with that but its kinda slow even when you take that into account. Is this a software problem or is it just that vista takes up so many more resources that its time for an upgrade. If I were to upgradge taking into account the limitations of the xps 600 motherboard what would be my best options, would getting a realtively inexpensive pentium d 960 and an 8800 gtx speed up performance or should I try to address the software problems that might be inherent first, all the programs I have installed that were compatible with vista seem to be working fine and I have tweaked and removed and cleaned any programs and registry entries that were redundant so I am leaning toward this being a limitation or my current hardware(I might be answering my own question but still would like the input).

Thanks for any help you all can provide.

Assuming you are still running the original video driver, I would recommend downloading and installing the newest version.

Of course, if you have the STB Velocity 128 card, the nVidia drivers are even better.

Maybe if you described your system, more precise help could be given. You did upgrade to V.90 on your modem drivers, correct?

Hey guy's i just ordered my XPS 600 a couple of days ago and it should be here by tuesday or thursday. I've been lurking around the forum for a bit now trying to figure out specifically what is inside my XPS 600. Does it use a custom Dell motherboard, if not which board does it use? Can anyone tell me what specific chipset it uses, and if i am limited to using only dell supplied drivers when it comes to the mother board and chipset. Also does anyoe know what type of power supply is in the system and what it's rated at? I've never purchased a Dell system before and i always tend to stay away from pre-configured packages from places like Dell and their competitors. I've been building my own systems for 8 or 9 years now and i always like to hand pick andknow exactly what's going into my system piece by piece. The only reason i bought the XPS 600 was due to the financing option, i'm a student in my last year of college and can't offord to pay off the system all inone shot, also the system seemed decently priced for what i'm getting, although i know dell used to be cheaper.

DB:2.71:Difference Between Dimension Xps, And Xps? sd

    Hi;

Forgive me if this has been covered somewhere already, I did a forum search and I did not find the exact answer that I was looking for. I have a Dimension XPS Generation 5 system, which I purchased new in July (and totally love, by the way). What is the difference between my XPS, and a "non-Dimension" XPS? It's kind of confusing.. when looking for support or parts or whatever, it seems I need to look under "Dimension" first, to find my XPS model. Looking directly under XPS systems, my system doesn't exist.. even though it looks identical to the current XPS 600 series. Even here in the forums I wasn't sure if I should post under the Dimension board, or the XPS board. So am I an XPS owner, or a Dimension owner? Did XPS start off as a Dimension model, but then branch off to its own separate model line? I'm not looking for hardware differences or anything that technical, I'm just confused between the two versions of the XPS name.

    Thanks,
    XPS Jeff
(or should that be "Dimension XPS Jeff"???)
    :smileywink:

I'm about to order XPS system and I can't seem to figure out why some of the XPS 600 components are not avaliable on XPS 400. For example some of the hard drives offered for XPS 600 are not avaliable.

Another question I have is this. What are the main differences between XPS 400 and XPS 600? I mean I see the video, hard drive, memory choices are different, is there anything else I don't see? What about motherboards? Is the case better on XPS 600?

Did the Windows 7 install disc automatically find/install the chipset drivers and mobo updates? If you have to force them using Windows/WindowsUpdate, does it update through microsoft driver data base, do you get them from intel, or do you just install original chipset driver from the original XPS 730x Resource CD? Looking for some insight here as I like to gothe cautious conservative method.

Also, after the the chipset drivers, are there any other drivers to take from Dells Drivers an Downloads page before dealing with what did not get automaticall picked up by Windows (and could I possibly get a link to the exact file(s) to use)? Does Alien FX and Dell Thermal App install/work under Windows 7 64 BitUltimate on the XPS 730x? If so, couldI please get a link to thesure-thing program build of both utilities?

My XPS 600 in the past two months has had the video card replaced and just this past week Dell had a tech come out and replace the mainboard + CPU + the fan shroud. The new mainboard failed after a day of use. I think now that it may have been a bad power supply. This has been a big deal for me because I have never had such a hardware problem like this before with a Dell. I also have never had to have one replaced. But this was my first XPS system.

Plus I just bought S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, Complete BATTLEFIELD 2 Collection, Star Wars BATTLEFRONT II, and an extra 400GB SATA harddrive the day my XPS 600 broke for good.

Now they are replacing the whole system. I was told You will be getting a replaced system either equivalent or upgraded. and thats all they will tell me. Has anybody had there XPS 600 replaced with a XPS 710? I should be getting the new system by Tuesday I hope. I really hope its not another XPS 600. I have had to much time wasted on that system to deal with another one.

    DB:2.63:Difference Between Xps 600 And Xps Gen5 9d

Oh! How quickly I forgot! Thanks, Dave!

Sadly, my Dimension XPS Gen-5 and all included accessories came packaged in the same standard, boring un-bleached brown cardboard boxes Dell has been using for years.

However, while my DELUXE XPS-600 seemed to arrive the same way, it was only upon opening the blasé outer carton that I discovered that inside were some SPECTACULARLY COOL, pretty, SHINY(!) BLACK cardboard "COLLECTIBLE" shipping boxes, with cool "XPS" & "DELL" logos printed all over them; with flashing mulitcolor LED's!!

(I might be lying about the LED's).

While both systems shipped with the standard obligatory (small gray) "Dell" logo mousing surface (that I imagine is most often destined to immediately visit the family waste basket, enroute to an eventual reunion with it's long lost littermates in the municipal landfill, but I digress) .... my XPS-600 arrived with a lovely (and absolutely useless), definitely plastic, pseudo-leatherette, about 1" thick, 4 page, "XPS" branded - cd wallet. unlike Dave, my disks did not come pre-installed in the handy binder, so therfor "some assembly may be required".

I found no sign of the exclusive "XPS Experience" wallet card I'd seen advertised - which would have provided me a direct line to (I THINK) Michael Dell's executive assistant's neice's third cousin ... for faster and more knowledgable technical support services exclusive to XPS customers. Maybe you'll have more luck.

[Oh, wait, nevermind, you can't get the XPS-600 where you are. Too bad for you. Better luck next time. Thanks for playing. Please come again.]

    Now...

    What else did I miss?

    DB:2.61:Xps 600 Upgrade Ideas? xc

Is there anything else required to use DX10?

    Hi

Yes you have to run Vista to use DX10 ,

XP 32\XP Pro 64 bit does not have DX10 !

You could buy 2 more gig,s of ram and run XP Pro\Vista 64 bit

Or buy 2 x 512 mb to add to what you have now and stay with

    XP without DX 10 ,

or buy Vista 32 bit they will use all of the 3 gig,s with 4 gig,s

XP\Vista 32 bit will only use about 3.5 out of the 4

the other .5 can not be used by XP\Vista 32 bit .

Other people may jump in about the CPU upgrade !

    Good Luck

steve u can try everything u want but a 32 bit os in the XPS600 will not see more than 2gigs its totally inherent of that particular system if u want it to see more then install a 64 bit os, im going to do it eventually myself because it is more secure, faster and drivers and software and game compatabilty issues are pretty much nill now and everyone i know that has vista ultimate 64 bit loves it . i have a xps600 myself and ive already been down the road your on and past that point i still like my system it does pretty much everthing i throw at it . ive done numerous upgrades  and my next ones are 2 -8800 gts and vista ultimate. u have to live with that particular defect or buy a new system just like when the core 2's came out everyone was expecting them to work in this pc and it was a bummer that they didnt but too bad so sad on its way to extinction just like the other dinosaurs. i'll shut-up now

DB:2.60:Mobo/Bios Problems (Ram & Fsb Not In Sync) And Possible Returnability 9j

    Hi, I have a Dell XPS 600.

Recently, I've notice that my RAM and FSB timings are not in sync... and Dell's BIOS (DXG015 Rev A02) does not support correcting this, nor does the BIOS allow nTune to let me edit it in the OS. My specs are

    Pentium D, 3.00 GHz
4x of 1GB Micron Tech RAM sticks
nForce4 INTEL nVidiaSLi Enabled (Dell OEM) Motherboard
nVidia 6800 (Dell OEM) Graphics Card
    +other tidbits that aren't necessary.

Now, I'm wondering... I've seen another post, and it says that most retail mobo's will NOT fit in to Dell's XPS 600 case. However, I measured the mobo inside and it was about 11.5 x 9,5 inches, while the retail ATX (of a Gigabyte nF4) is 12x9.6 inch, so pretty much almost a little tall for the case (but it looks like it has room, I'd have to take the whole mobo out to see if I could adjust it since Dell makes their items 'mix and match' so they can easily swap in and out items).

    So, here's the thing.

    1) Is there any special BIOS I can flash on my mobo enable me to edit the timings?
    2) If not, is it possible to take out the mobo and replace it with another retail (nF4, of course, because it's got so much to offer, by Gigabye Co) mobo?
    3) If not of the above... I received this on Sept 29 and it should be nearing the 1 month date of when I got it (been over a month since I ordered). Is it still possible to return this? (I've heard there's a small reshelving fee, since everything I have in this is still stock, nothing damaged, all peak pristine). I don't have the packaging anymore, so I'd have to figure out how to ship this back to Dell. I wouldn't mind paying some for them to ship me the materials to ship it back...

I've serverely regretting this purchase as learning of what Dell sells is a crippled mobo, making sure it's customers don't 'play around with it' to OC, however, THIS IS AN XPS SYSTEM (pardon the caps, but it needed emphasis). I would hope that someone who purchases an XPS would be somewhat knowledgeable with computers... however I bet Dell oblidges. :\ I should have built my own... even if I lack the experience (or courage to dump $ to in a new area of unfamiliarity).

What would you do in my situation? Thank you for reading and I hope that I can find some answers for this (thanks in advance) ;)

When it does, everything seems to run fine once it boots up, but if I shut down or restart, it usually does not boot. I've tried both slots with the same result, and then I put the NVIDIA 6800 I ordered it with back in, and it boots fine. I have never had a booting problem when the 6800 is installed. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Anybody else out there with an XPS 600 successfully using an ATI All-In-Wonder X800XL?

I would still put the 6800 back in....uninstall the drivers...turn off (not reboot)..swap out cards and turn on..install ati divers...unless you did uninstall the 6800 prior to installing the ati.....you dont have nothing to loose by trying that...it sounds like its video card related..so that would be my first step....It alway best to uninstall a card when changing one out.....and disable antivirus scanner when installing drivers.....it can cause problems..

DB:2.58:Corrupted Xps Files - Is There A Way To Fix These k3

I am running Win 7 Home Premium on a Dell n5010 (64 bit)

I mistakenly thought XPS Viewer was a pdf application. I have a ton of XPS files on my laptop. I recently installed Adobe Acrobat Pro and thought --- stupidly --- that I should make all these files open with the same program, never realizing that XPS is not
a pdf reader. You'd think I would have taken the hint when I did "open with" and Acrobat wasn't one of the choices. Argh!

So this is what I did to an XPS file -
[a] right clicked, selected Open With
[b] browsed through the hard drive until I found the Acrobat application
[c] finished the process and, in doing so, corrupted every XPS file on my laptop (more than 15,000).

Now, everything that was file type "XPS Document" is now file type "DOWNLOADING file."

I thought that, logically, I should be able to undo my mess by right-clicking, selecting Open With and finding the XPS Application. I can't find it anywhere. I went to the downloads section of this site thinking I could download again and watch where it was
putting it, but there are only downloads for XP and Vista.

Is there anything I can do to fix this mess?

DB:2.58:Corrupted Xps Files - Is There A Way To Fix These k3

I ran the system restore and it didn't fix it.

That article did have some useful information. I was able to follow the steps to find it by going through the Control Panel/Programs and, although it wasn't where it would be for Vista, it was there. It doesn't show the path, though.

I keep thinking if I could just find the path, I would be able to do an Open With, browse to the right path and be able to fix the issue. Is there anyway to find the path or do you know how the application is named?

    DB:2.57:Purchasing New Xps 400 fm

Avalon24, I agree with Tom McCune and VCraig. I recently bought an XPS400 similar to what you're looking at and for similar uses, plus it's part of home network. It's tempting, after reading many posts on this board, to chuck all of unnecessary stuff loaded on the machine and start from scratch by reinstalling the operating system and building "up", but is it really worth the extra hassle to you? In addition to "if ain't broke, don't fix it" I'd keep in mind the Dr.'s watchwords "First, do no harm."

As these folks suggest, try working with what you got and fine-tuning it, such as uninstalling programs you don't need. Fine-tuning the startup, as SR45 suggests, is a very good idea. The website msrk suggests to check out processes is one good source; another is http://www.answersthatwork.com/ and go to the "Task List" button.

One thing I'll pass on from my experience - while you'll want to keep an antivirus program and a firewall, if you stick with the pre-installed McAfee suite, which I did, you might want to not only disable but also uninstall the anti-spam component. I'm not sure how effective it would be, but I started to run into problems when I tried to enable it for one email account, which went away right after I disabled it again. Seems to me like one more program running in background with limited benefit if you've got at least some spam filtering on your email program and so since I was sure I wasn't going to use this program after trying it, I just got rid of it. If you change your mind, you'll have the program CD to re-install it. That's one of the few program CDs you'll now get. Which reminds me that you ought to insist on getting an Operating System CD - it's NOT automatically included in your order and even if you don't decided to re-install the OS, you should have it in case you ever have a problem w/ the OS on the hard drive and need to boot up from the CD (I've already had that happen once).

    Good luck.

DELL Mouse keyboard is always USB connected - no problems

Just getting around to transferring my permanent USB connect equipment (scanner, printer etc) from old DELL PC to my new DELL PC (XPS 600/Windows XP Pro SP2)

Decided to start by first using the USB connect cable supplied by DELL for connecting DELL monitor (1905FP) upstream USB to PC USB (used arear panel USB)

After PC restart, black screen with DELL logo the wording F2 = Setup F12 = Boot Menu appearing in top RHS corner, PC froze (diagnostic lights status 2 3 ON)

According to DELL troubleshooting this indicates quote, “A possible floppy drive or hard drive failure has occurred” Solution is quote ”Reseat all power data cables restart the computer” - What?

I’ve read Forum similar topic Setup change solution suggested by ChrisM, very helpful but what concerns me is:

This appears to be only a possible workaround solution

The DELL XPS 600 product is sold as a having multi USB feature, 6 USB connections on rear panel 2 USB connections on front panel

Setup factory default settings for both USB Controller Fast BootisON

Pre or Post product purchase, there is absolutely no mention by DELL of the need to change Setup factory default settings to enable normal use of their product multi USB feature?

This is the first problem I have experienced with my new DELL XPS 600 after reading Forum USB problem topics it looks like there’s a real major problem with the DELL product multi USB feature

Haven’t tried my Media Card Reader unit yet, but again from Forum subject topics it doesn’t look good

It would be interesting to know if other XPS 600 cutomers don't have a problemusing the multi USB feature?

Don’t want to sound negative but my son’s PC desktop cost a quarter of my DELL XPS 600 he doesn’t have any problems leaving PC multi USB peripherals (5 off) permanently connected!

    DB:2.57:Xps 600 Usb Problems a3

Not sure if anyone can explain this?

First time I used Setup was PC switch on day, so I could (very carefully) record “out the box” BIOS info settings. Second time was today with plan to try the suggested setting USB Controller to No Boot

To my surprise under Boot Sequence I noticed that a change has occurred, 100% sure there were only 5 line entries in original Info/settings?

    1. Onboard or USB Floppy Drive

    2. Onboard SATA Hard Drive (not present)

    3. Onboard IDE Hard Drive (not present)

    4. ID 01 NVIDIA STRIPE 465.66G

    5. Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive

    6. USB Device (not present)

Line 6. USB Device (not present) status has now appeared? Does this make sense to anyone?

Don’t know when it first appeared can only guess it may have occurred when I was trying to connect the DELL monitor (1905FP) upstream USB to PC USB (used arear panel USB)?

Don’t even know at what stage of BIOS sequence the USB/boot freeze problem occurs?I’m no expert but I understand BIOS performs POST before Boot Sequence check there are no POST beep codes generated during the USB/boot freeze problem?

In the case of Boot Sequence (not using bootable floppy disk) the drive to boot from will always be line 4 assuming it contains correct boot sector code it will take over from the BIOS otherwise PC will freeze? The USB problem does NOT generate a “No boot device available"

What kind of inputs does your TV still have available? Some have one or more DVI inputs, some have one or more HDMI inputs, and some have one or more of both.

Your XPS 600 should have at least 1 DVI output, however, with SLI I think you can only use a single DVI output, the 2nd you may or may not have on your card(s) will not work in SLI mode from what I understand (don't own SLI myself, but have read that).

If your TV has an available DVI port, and you have a usable DVI port on your system, you should have enough with just a DVI-to-DVI cable. If your TV only has an available HDMI port, there are converter plugs or cables to go from DVI to HDMI.

One other possibility is that your TV has a VGA connector. In this case you'll need a converter to convert a DVI port on your videocard to a VGA port and then use a cable to go from that VGA port to the VGA port on your TV (the TV may have come with this cable).

Hi, I have a Dell XPS 600.  And I was thinking of getting a new video card but I don't know what computer case I have, what video card type I have (PCI?), and what power supply I have.  All i know is I think it is the first XPS that were created so its the Silver Case with glowing blue backlight chrome DELL logo in lower front, and black sides.  and my current vid card is NVidia GeForce 7800 GTX 256 MB.

DB:2.56:Xps 600 - What Case Do I Own? What Video Card Type? What Power Supply? ms

Yes, but I would look at www.newegg.com as a very good online vendor that sells many computer products including video cards.  I have purchase three cards from them in the past and so have many others.  Well respected and some times there are coupons, promotions that make them less costly than Dell

hi i was wondering atm i have 2 7800 GTX 512 video cards running SLI, if im gonna be getting Vista and the new games that run on DX10 should i get 1 or 2 GeForce 8800 GTX 768 MB DDR3 PCI Express Graphics Card or is what i have good enuf when im running a 19 in. monitor

    DB:2.56:Upgrade Xps 600 8s

SLI it to death. The 600 will handle it. Just an FYI the top card shaves a little under the hard drive bays, So a nice insulation sheet to separate the top of the card(the circuit side) and the metal  of the bays will not touch. The system's power supply is more than enough to handle it. But a bottleneck does occur with PD's from the 800 series, the 900's would be better and even though a bottleneck is cpu oriented here, the Cuda technology assists the cpu for overall performance gain. Just running the specs .....

DB:2.56:How To Print A Image With High Dpi 9f

I am trying to write a program that can print a image with higher resolution.
    g.scale(72.0/600, 72.0/600);
I used that code to print images but nothing changed.

I also tried the code below.
    PrintRequestAttributeSet att = new HashPrintRequestAttributeSet();
    att.add(new PrinterResolution(600, 600, ResolutionSyntax.DPI));
    printjob.print(att);
    And it failed again.

So what should I do to print a image with high quality?
    Thanks.

valI wrote a application with Jcomponet at last.
Then using java.runtime to call that app to print image out.
I dont know how to write it as an API to call in my code still.

Another new system question, please.  Just got my new XPS m1530.  After setting up the Dell Support System, after visiting the driver download page, should I automatically download all of the suggested d/l's from the page?  Bios updates and stuff like that???  Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks!

    DB:2.56:Suggested Downloads?? 9c

I personally prefer to use the latest drivers available for the hardware I'm using, but if your system is running smoothly just now, and all your programs/games are working without problem... don't be overly concerned about installing them :smileywink:

That applies particularly to BIOS updates.

BIOS updates can go wrong, and I'll only ever apply a BIOS update if I'm experiencing a serious system problem, or if the new BIOS offers better/additional features than the one I'm currently using (like providing support for faster CPU's etc).

If you want some great high perofrmance memory with a real life-time warranty, I highly recomend Ballistix memory from crucial.com here is the link

here is another link with reviews

I use it in my XPS Generation 4 and realy love the performance boost, I have been using Crucial memory for years now and have only had one stick go bad and it was a piece of cake to have crucial replace it under the life-time warranty and their tech support is great to work with.

All the home desktops now feature the new Intel Pentium D 900 processors as an option on the configuration page. I've been waiting for this, and now have to decide which one to order. One strange thing - an XPS 600 with the options I want is $2843 in the Home section, but $2653 in the Small Business section. The only difference is Windows Media Center OS in the Home XPS 600, but Windows XP Home in the Small Business XPS 600. Should I care?

DB:2.55:Intel Pentium D 900'S Are Here - Which Os To Get? xs

I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand. At least go here and see if there are any features you might find useful.

You also have the option to buy it later for less, either OEM or retail. Newegg.com has it for about $130. You may have to do a clean install though.

I own a Dimension 4300 currently (best system I ever owned--love it!) I'm looking to add a Dell XPS 600 to the house, and want to set up a wireless network between the two computers to share files, a printer and a broadband internet connection.

The XPS will be my new primary system/ the Dimension 4300 will be a secondary system.

    So, I have two questions:

    1) What do I need to buy for the XPS 600?
    2) What do I need to buy for the Dimension 4300?

There's some age difference obviously, so I'm not sure what will be compatible with both systems. Thanks for your help! :)

I replaced the two drives included with my XPS 600 with three new ones. They're all SATA-2 Seagates and they work just fine. My problem is they seem to be running warm. I've got a sector checker program and it reports they're running at 51 degrees (124F) though this is during the check. Still, I've got an old P4 with ATA drives that measure about 37 degrees (99F) under the same load. Is 51 too high? Who else is running with three drives and do you take any extra steps to keep the drives cooler?

    DB:2.55:Video Machine: Best Choice? 18

I have a Dell XPS 600, Pentium D Processor, 3.0 Gigahertz; Nvidia GeForce 7950 GT; Creative X-Fi Audio Processor; 2 GB 667 Memory; two 500 GB SATA drives; Sony BDRW BWU-100A BluRay CD burner.

I am stuck with this processor which is too slow to suit me when I process AVCHD movies as well as longer HD movies. Unfortunately, the XPS 600 was an interim that cannot be upgraded to handle the quad core processors.

My question is: Should I buy the new 630 or 720 or what? to replace this non upgrade obsolete machine? The video processor handles al graphics in Vista, but Vista is not stable yet. Should I make use of the special offer from Dell to go XP before June 30? How do I avoid another upgrade problem machine?

    Please advise what to purchase.

    Many thanks,

    Jim Pixie

Thanks again, lone wolf. You have answered all questions and in depth is just fine, that helps a great deal.

Apparently Dell is still struggling with the board, in a solvable way.
