DB:3.55:What Is Wrong With My Optiplex Gx1a jz

We have two Optiplexes (PIII GX1a 450 MHz) in our home office. Both systems were purchased last year. One is roughly 17 months and the other almost 12 months. The only thing that is different in the youngest system are the two hard disks (2x20 GB). The older has 2x10GB. Today the youngest system experienced a blue dump and my partne called me from the home office to where I was at the moment to ask what he should do. I told him to re-boot the system but what happens is that after the initial Dell screen he only gets a black screen with a character line that looks like this TLDLDLDLDLDLDLDLD_ nothing else. It is possible to restart the system with CTRL, ALT, DEL or with the power on/off button. What causes this error and what is the remedy?

    I need a reply urgently!

DB:2.73:Dell Optiplex Gx110 Not Working With Ati Vr 32m Pci Card 8f

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX110 996 MHz. It comes with an onboard video card. I want to upgrade to something a little better. I purchased an ATI Radeon card. It is the ATI VR 32M PCI Card using the ATI Rage 128 technology.

Basically, there is a conflict with this card and the Dell OptiPlex. When the card is in the machine, I get nothing, not even the BIOS screen on boot. The BIOS only has settings for Onboard and Auto. If I set it to Auto, the behavior is as described. If I set it to Onboard, then I can use the computer fine by attaching to the onboard controller. Using this mode, I can see in the both the BIOS and in Windows XP that the ATI card is there and recognized. However, if I switch the BIOS back to auto, bad news again.

    My BIOS version is A10.

Interesting, I also have an OptiPlex GX1a and it does the same thing.

I then tried the card in a generic pc that I have and it worked fine.

Any ideas? Worst case, is there a list somewhere of 3rd party video cards that will work with this machine? I don't really know where to turn to.

Dell download page lists the 2 Aztech drivers you mentioned, yet when applying them, the message says: the drivers are not 'compatible'. Should I apply them, and if so, which one? What's the difference? How can I tell which one I have?

Why would they not be compatible if they are from Dell...for a Dell?

There are no identifier markings on the card itself to tell model number, etc.

    Optiplex Audio forum members.

I am trying to update some faq's on the optiplex boards and thought I would ask you all what you would like to see in faq's. Please reply to this message with any ideas you would like to see.

    DB:2.56:Info Needed z8

I totally agree about Soundmax being the brand and the AD18XX or AD19XX aka Analog Devices
    being listed in the drivers.

Integrated Video and Integrated Sound should be listed in the SOUNDCARDS and VIDEO CARDS part of the
    "Driver" links.

Models that use INTEL EXTREME Graphics like the 170L, GX260, GX270, Dimension B110 etc should have
drivers listed for OS from a single click. AKA WIN98SE INTEL here, WIN2000/XP INTEL here etc.

There should also be a FAQ about PCI 2.3 not supporting 5v cards. And a General table of models that
has bullets for PCI 2.0/2.1/2.2/2.3 and AGP and PCI and PCIE and X1 vs X16 slots.

A picture of each kind of slot side by side like Visiontek does on their Retail boxes would also be
VERY USEFUL. Its possible to force an AGP card into an X16 slot but I guarantee its not supposed to go
    in there.

Another section should make people aware that WIN98 NON SE version MUST USE WIN95 drivers because it
DOES NOT SUPPORT the WIN98SE/ME/2000/XP WDM driver model. WIN95/WIN98 NON SE use the old VXD driver
    model.

The non support of OS aka WIN98/WIN98SE/ME being no longer supported should also be made up front.
That way persons who insist on update update update of drivers will know that its not just Dell that
isnt looking forward for drivers and support.

Classic example. The Forceware drivers for NVIDIA are NO LONGER UNIFIED. Older models of cards
are NOT SUPPORTED with the latest Forceware. Windows XPSP2 has the 56.72 WHQL drivers and going past
this version of drivers is NOT USEFUL and will BREAK older TNT, VANTA, Etc cards.

The following products are not supported in current ForceWare Release drivers.

    TNT2
    TNT2 Pro
    TNT2 Ultra
    TNT2 Model 64 (M64)
    TNT2 Model 64 (M64) Pro
    Vanta
    Vanta LT
    GeForce 256
    GeForce DDR
    GeForce2 GTS
    GeForce2 Pro
    GeForce2 Ti
    GeForce2 Ultra
    GeForce2 MX Integrated graphics
    Quadro
    Quadro2 Pro
    Quadro2 EX

Similar problem for DELL ATI Rage 128 cards and Radeon VE cards.
The Catalyst drivers from ATI DO NOT WORK with these Dell specific cards.
They will say no compatable hardware found.

    Hi Catshot,

I am sorry for the confusion on my end. You are correct. The slot max is actually 2GB per slot but the max is only 4GB. So you may go the route of a 4GB kit (two 2GB modules) but you would only utilitze the memory in those two slots. This is because the motherboard only allows for 4GB. I hope this clarification helps.

I am not sure what the problem is, but if you poke around in Google with your model number, your BSOD code and the word install:

Dell Optiplex 760 USFF 0X0000007B install

you will find that many people have this 7B problem installing various flavors of Windows on the 760 and the answer seems to be finding the right setting(s) in the BIOS for the HDD interface - and that might take some experimenting since I can't find a 100%
this works every time solution. ATA, Legacy, ACHI -- ATA... you might have to try some things.

Look through the Service Manual for ideas too:

    http://www.dell.com/support/Manuals/us/en/19/Product/optiplex-760

    On or about page 150:

Configures the operating mode of the integrated hard drive controller to:

    AHCI (default) ATA Legacy

I would look at what the BIOS interface mode is now, try it, if it fails, try something else until you find the right setting, and then folks indicate clear sailing after that.

The deal here is that a common antivirus which works on all systems including even dell optiplex GX270 will results in a blue error screen, that is a least ocurrance on the system will give a windows blue error screen and the ultimate will be formatting and installation. Please what do you think is wrong with the system is there any way to solve the problem thanks.

James the deal here is that, the system even corrupts on windows 98, previously win XP professional was installed on it which was working perfectly for about 6months. The win XP got corrupted through power failure all cus the client doesn't have UPS. Afterwards I install a clean win XP which worked for about 60 days. It got corrupted through the use of the correct Support CDs being used by the client. Afterwards all Clean windows XP installation doesn't work and results in blue windows error screen.

Im glad that worked well for you! I also downloaded Mini Tool which is a great program, but unfortunately, it did not work for me. I think, looking back, that my problem persisted because the sector on the HDD which contained the boot code calling for the protected area on the drive was not overwritten or reformatted. Once I used the Hitachi Feature Tool (also a free download) and then started over with a fresh installation of Windows Xp, I had complete success.

DB:2.39:Determining Amount Of Ram Sticks In Computers In Order To Buy Ram 77

No, you and I BOTH thought we were taking crazy pills...G
    What we finally found out...
Converting the aggregate report into a listing, no matter how long the number of computers was, worked fine--numbers were accurate. In the View, GroupID is used to count the number of memory slots in use, and I was using the MAX of that count (there
is physically no more than 4 slots, so, I was excluding GroupID's of 5, and 6 (there was one each computer with each number) as that was an obvious inventory or WMI issue) to get me the number of sticks. GroupID is an Integer, and...so I'm told...it
was misbehaving when used in the aggregate report, giving the wrong numbers, but...only when a large number of computers was being looked at. I don't really understand that, but...
Anyway, what Jim Carles figured out, was to create a Temp Table, feed the listing query into it, then use it to develop the aggregate query--this seems to work great, and code is below.
    Thanks.

DB:2.38:Dell Optiplex 960 Desktop - Intel Core 2 Quad Cpu Q9650 Upgrade Possible? sa

    Hi!

As far as i know the Optiplex Desktop Workstation was sold with Q9650 CPUs by Dell.

Mine has a Core 2 Duo inside and i bought an Q9650 in order to upgrade my System.

I flashed the newest BIOS but i still get a incompatible CPU detected screen when switching the PC on.

Any hints? Was this optiplex sold with different Mainboard revisions for Core duo or Quad?

    regards,

    Simon

::edit:: i originally wrote SFF which was wrong, i have the desktop version

DB:2.38:Dell Optiplex 960 Desktop - Intel Core 2 Quad Cpu Q9650 Upgrade Possible? sa

If this is the case take a careful look at the CPU fan connector. Dell will put a jumper on them to allow a cpu or not.On the version that DOESNT work with quad cores, the last pin of the header is grounded with a jumper. Basically does nothing other than to identify it as a different fan. The version that works with quad cores has the last pin empty and unconnected so not grounded. Thats the ONLY difference. When I put the new quad capable heatsink assembly into my original 960 SFF, it now works with quad cores. The mainboard part number between the 2 machines is the same. G261D.

DB:2.37:Mdt Starting To Inject Wrong Drivers...Especially Hd Controller Drivers? m9

What I have for imported drivers on my MDT
    Optiplex 740
    Optiplex 755
    Optiplex 760
    Optiplex 790
    Latitude E6420
    Precision M6600
    Inspirion 6400
    Dimension 5150
    Latitude D630
    Optiplex 745
    Latitude D531
I created Win 7 x64, Win 7 x86, and Win XP x86 folders in the Out-of-Box drivers. Imported the respective OS and architecture drivers into the folders.
In Advanced Config | selection profiles, I created Win 7 x64, Win 7 x86, and Win XP x86 profiles. Each selection profile is associated with the respective out-of-box drivers folder as previously mentioned.

For task sequence, let's say deploy win xp x86 to target, I have that associated with the win xp x86 profile.
Once in a while after doing the deploying of OS and on first reboot, the machine (could be any model) would BSOD and then restarts. And it's a never-ending cycle, which leads me to think the wrong HD controller drivers got injected.
How can I go about fixing that????

DB:2.37:Mdt Starting To Inject Wrong Drivers...Especially Hd Controller Drivers? m9

That's what fixed it for me. I followed the instructions via this post:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistadeployment/thread/98f123d4-9190-4169-a376-7a0caf0ffb2a
If that doesn't work, you may want to alter your deployment scenario for drivers. We're using #3 for total control to avoid any future conflicts.

I ended up doing an overhaul of MDT and implement #3
    So for example:
out-of-box-drivers: optiplex 760 win xp 32 bit folder which has all the win xp 32 bit drivers for the optiplex 760 imported
selection profile: optiplex 760 win xp 32 bit profile that has optiplex 760 win xp 32 bit out-of-box drivers folder selected
task sequnce: optiplex 760 win xp 32 bit deployment with a win xp 32 bit .wim image selected (I only have one which I've created when I implemented #2). In the preinstall section, I specified optiplex 760 win xp 32 bit profile for where the
    drivers are to be injected.

I did the above three for all the other models of desktops and laptops.

    Hi iotriton65,

If you have followed the steps from 1 to 7 and are not receiving any beep codes from the system then it would appear that you either have a problem with the motherboard, the processor or the power supply. Before you first started removing components, do you remember what the status of the power button LED and diagnostic LEDs? This can give an further indication of what is occurring with your system.

Beware that there are two versions of the GX110. One uses a slot 1 processor, and the other a socket 370 processor.
In both versions, if you use BIOS a05 (but no later), you can go up to a Celeron 1.4G. In the slot 1 version, you need a slot adapter such as a Powerleap PL-iP3/T.
In the socket 370 version, you need a socket converter such as the Lin Lin from http://www.CompGeeks.com

The question I just gotta ask is why is it in pieces?

PCI USB 1.1 cards are $20 or so if you can still find them.

Get on that uses an Opti, Texas Instruments, or Lucent chipset.

OHCI vs UHCI which is what INTEL/VIA are.

When I received my OptiPlex GX270, only the NVidia GForce4 MX 440video adapter was installed. I now want to install the onboard video adapter (Intel 82865G extreme graphics) as second video adapter to be able to attach 2 monitors to my PC. But the installation fails.

I have downloaded the newest drivers forthe Intel adapter (tried the ones from the dell site (1312KA01.exe for Windows XP)and the ones from the intel site win2k_xp140.exe)and the installation fails with anerror message: "A software error occurred, please inform technical support about this: Can't install Intel (R) graphical driver on current display adapter"

What am I doing wrong ?

    Thanks in advance,

    David

Yes, all onboard video cards are AGP - so you can't use another AGP card.

Best to use AGP card (your Geforce 4) and get a cheap PCI one.

I have a OptiPlex GX620 which has recently begun to fail - it will suddenly die with the case fan running at high speed and the power switch flashing amber steadily about once per second, none of the diagnostic lights are lit. Switching off and rebooting leads to the same situation, but if left alone it will often restart by itself, only to die again at a later stage.

The machine is usually permanently on, power is via an APC SmartUPS 1000. It is part of a peer-to-peer network and is used as a secondary display beside my workstation, showing reference files (and playing background music). It also holds historical files from when it was my main machine, so I am loathe to bin it.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong and how to resolve them?

DB:2.34:Optiplex Gx620 Power Light Flashing Amber mj

Dell doesnt overstate what their power supply can do. Smaller NON EPS12v power supplies do not provide 170W on the 3.3v and 5v rails and 20 to 25W on the 5vSB rail. Getting smaller means the supply might not work at all or will blink Amber within 30 seconds of turning on.

    5.0V @ 16 A = 80W

    3.3V @ 8A = 26.4W

    12V @ 35.5A = 426 W

    5VSB @ 4A = 20 W

    Total = 552.4 W that Dell Rates as a 305W power supply.

This also assumes 80% or better efficiency. Aka 100W = 80W at 80% efficiency.

Many of the Cheap NON EPS ATX power supplies that people choose based on PRICE only provide 15W on 5VSB and 120W on the 3.3/5 rail which means in some cases it wont even turn on or if it does it goes to flashing amber within 20 seconds.

The 550M may be too small if you use a Pentium D 960 because the 5VSB is 15W not 20W. S3 standby may need as much as 30W for some processor/motherboard configurations. If you add up the max power ratings at the bottom you get a much larger number. You ignore ratings other than the 12v rail at your own risk.

    Hello,

we bought several new Optiplex 745 and 755. Some of them with DVD/Drive, most without (we do not need as many DVDs as computers).

The computers that were bought with the DVD Drive do not pose any problem here.

But if we move the DVD Drive to another computer (again 745 / 755), the drive is not recognized.

In the BIOS under 'Module Bay', the 'Drive ID' is marked as 'Unknown', windows does not detect it, booting from CD/DVD is not possible.

What could be wrong in this situation?

    int he BIOS, the settings
    Module Bay = ON
    USB Controller = On

Is there anything else to verify? Anything else that can be misset? Anything, that is disabled on the optiplex 745/755 when they are bought withoud DVD ?

    Thank you for your assistance!

First post but really need some advice asap before i buy the wrong items.

I recently bought an Optiplex 745 Form with the intention to max out its capabilities, as it stands its standard, 80gb hdd, with an total of 2gb ram and an ati radeon x1300 256mb g/card.

What i need to know is what is the max size graphics card (in both ram and actual size) that will fit the machine with its current psu (270w)?
And what is the maximum power from a psu can the optiplex motherboard handle in case i need ore power for the new low rise card (if i can find one with big enough ram as the machine will be used for gaming).

Im currently modding the casing to have extra input/output fans for cooling purposes, and adding the max 8gb ram capacity.

Thanks alot and hope to hear from you guys soon :)

Thanks for your reply Hiramelu, I have tried most of what you are asking me to do, The PC boots up fine and the mouse works great but it freezes at certain times of the day, you can unplug it and plug it back in and the mouse starts to work again. On my original message I had specified that the bar code reader was USB but I found out that it wasn't, it uses a PS/2 splitter with the keyboard. I still suspect that the mouse is conflicting with the bar code reader because the mouse seems to freeze when the software to scan bar codes is being used. One of the other PCs happens to have a PS/2 mouse and there have never been problems with it. I am contacting the company that makes these bar code readers to see if there have been problems reported to them and if they have a solution, thanks for getting back to me.

Since the SCSI hard drives are getting expensive these days – I thought I switched to using the Maxtor200 GB hard drive. I wonder if that was a mistake. I just had it nearly a year and a half, and Ahalf until itquit again. Perhaps I have chosen the WRONG hard drive. Does anyone here what hard drive is best recommended for my Optiplex GX1p? Any IDE (parallel ATA) drive would work (surprised me 200GB worked, but if it did, then any ATA drive would most likely work), but chose one that the manufacturer shows faith in their product by offering a 3 or more year manufacturer's warranty. Examples are Seagate or Hitachi and some Western Digital drives offer more than 1 year warranty as well.

Modern way to do this is SmartDeploy. Similar to the Ghost scripting approach. Except they use a WIM for the image and you have a folder with platform packs which pairs up drivers with WMI information.
Like you said, they get injected by querying WMI.
So that technique is still alive and well. :P

DB:2.32:External Usb Floppy Boot Device Question 91

    System: OptiPlex GX270, BIOS A03

Has anyone had any success at using an external USB floppy drive for system booting purposes? The OptiPlex system manual implies that this is possible, but either I'm doing something wrong with mine, or else the BIOS feature simply does not work.

    Any help will be appreciated...

DB:2.32:External Usb Floppy Boot Device Question 91

Congratulations, SpeedStep, you are correct. And, thanks very much for your help.

Yes, the problem is one of current limiting due to low power output from the Optiplex USB ports. I checked my Sony external USB floppy drive specifications and found the power requirement for the floppy drive to be 500 mA, just as you said. Using a self-powered USB hub as you suggested, the external USB floppy drive now boots correctly.

I am running BIOS A03 on an Optiplex GX270 Mini Tower. For others who may be interested, here are the relevant BIOS Setup settings touse:

    1. Drive Configuration
    Set Diskette Drive A: = 3.5 inch, 1.44 MB

    2. Boot Sequence
Diskette Drive device must be "checked"

    3. Integrated Devices
    Set Diskette Interface = OFF

After the three settings above have been configured, the f12 Boot Menu will contain the entry "Diskette Drive". Select the corresponding option number for "Diskette Drive" and the system will boot from the external USB floppy drive. Naturally, all of this assumes that the floppy is attached to the system given the considerations mentioned above concerning floppy drive power, and that there is a bootable floppy disc in the drive.

Thanks again to SpeedStep for making it happen !!

The GXa uses a proprietary Design for the ATX connector pinning. You can use a converter cable to convert it to regular ATX or buy Dell PN 0009228C as a Replacement for the Tower or Desktop Models.

From previous experience with dell, I've had a hard time getting the right product ordered, even when talking with a dell representative..(no english). I ordered a cdrom for my gx60 optiplex small form factor chassis, after finally getting the right one, it didn't come with any cables to attach it. I was told to buy a ribbon cable to finish installing it. I ordered one from the site but it has too many prongs. I have been credited back for the wrong cable and would like to order the right part so I can finally get this installed. If it helps, My customer number is 32799820.

I guess I'm asking for your help in locating the correct name or number of the part I am looking for (ribbon cable to attach cd rom) so that I know what to ask for exactly when i call or look online and the wrong thing won't be ordered again.

When I've talked to dell reps in the past they asked me for the part #? When I was asking them what I should order...

Thank you for any assistance you can give. I sincerely appreciate it.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX200 that I purchased on auction at our special education cooperative. It came with no operating system and no memory. I was given memory for it and purchased Windows XP operating system. I installed the memory (it's seated firmly and both clips are in place) but when I turn the unit on, the computer gives me a series of beeping alarms. The screen is blank, the keyboard doesn't power on and neither does the mouse. I know this is a good machine that was used rarely in a classroom, but they upgraded to newer computers and auctioned off the outdated ones.

Can someone give me a clue of what is wrong? I'm surprising my 80 year old parents with their first computer to use for e-mail and internet only. Please help!

I have a Optiplex 240. What Graphics card can I use for video games?

    DB:2.32:Optiplex 240 Video Card j8

Assuming you have a tower version, it has an AGP 4x slot. You can put in an AGP 4x card therefor. Most AGP 8x cards should work fine in here too.

Don't spend too much on an AGP card though, as the age of the GX240 doesn't really make it a high performing system for (3D) games.

If you end up spending more than maybe US$100, you probably should consider holding on to your money a bit longer while saving a bit further and buy a used GX280 or 620 or so and get a PCIe card for that system.

Larger drives and faster RPM means Hotter drives.

The average operating speed of such drives starts around 50C and goes up to 55 to 65C

    http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/faq/temperature.html

The operating temperature range for most Seagate hard drives is 5 to 50 degrees Celsius. A normal PC case should provide adequate cooling.

However, if your enclosure is unable to maintain this range, we suggest that you contact your system manufacturer for information on cooling and ventilation hardware that is compatible with your specific configuration.

The answer to this question depends on your case environment. If you have adequate cooling, it is probably not necessary. If you feel that you need additional cooling, please consult the resources below.

    Hi,

The ASSETT.COM utility works on Dimension computers. I've used it successfully and have only ever had Dimension model computers fromDell.

You may need to bot from a floppy disk drive to get it to work. Download a Win 98 floppy boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com. Once you have created the floppy disk, copy the ASSETT.COM file to the diskand and boot from it.

    Hello,

I had a problem with Zenworks 7 SP1 not detecting my nic in a Dell Optiplex

    745.

After searching I found there is a Hotpatch 2 for Zenworks 7.0.1, I have

    obtained from Novell.

The Hotpatch is installed and the nic is working, also with dhcp. But when I

    use manual mode in pxe.

I see an error message Could not find the ZENworks Installation Source

and does not boot to the prompt, but asks me to

manual configure. When I proceed the linux bootproces from the menu, the

imaging prompt appears after loading data with tftp.

So the nic driver load normally.

    What could be wrong?

A bug of a script issue? I checked settings.txt but nothing strange there.

I was having a problem with a few games (HALO and Neverwinternights)and some graphics software (3dsMax6) and it was driving me crazy! I wound up trying different drivers, uninstalling and re-intalling and swearing and ..well you get the picture.

I started Netmeeting the selected Exit. After that Iwas able to test Direct3D in DXDIAG and run my games and graphic software.

Funny thing is I had a simular problem about a year ago with a previous version of 3dsmax. I wound up rebuilding the machine and the problem went away.

Probably your friend has added the drive with it set to master or slave.  Set the drives to cable select; the drive on the connector nearest the motherboard becomes the slave (if you are reteining your exosting disk as the master).  Reset the NVRAM and make sure the drive is detected in the bios correctly.  All documentation for the GX110 is available on line at support.dell.com - use your asset tag on the machine to get the right set of manuals etc.
