I have an ESXi 5.0 Server configured with a number of VMs. All VMs use DHCP to obtain IP Addresses. Until the last reboot I was able to use RDP to connect to the VMs from anywhere in our work network. However now, although I can Ping out from the VMs to any physical machine on the network either by IP address or name, I cannot ping into the VMs from outside, nor can they ping each other. The virtual machines are all on a common vswitch using a single physical NIC. I can still ping the ESXi server (kernel port and management network) from any machine.

The Windows Firewall is disabled on all VMs, and Remote Access is enabled - this was all working fine!

The leases in DHCP are fine

DB:3.81:Esxi Vms Stopped Talking Over Rdp sk

    I have resolved the issue!

Although I had disabled the Windows Firewall for Home or Private Networks, the local network was being treated as a Public Network.

I have now added the VM servers into our AD domain, and added an inbound ICMP Rule ( as per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947809%28v=ws.10%29.aspx) for Domain Networks and bingo - all is now good.

Still cannot confirm how it was working previously - although I suspect the LAN was being seen as a Private network - not sure why this would have changed.

    Thanks for your asistance.

    Good day to all,

I am having some routing issues at hand in the moment. Do appreciate if someone will help me along.

    Environment on VM

    version:4.5.1 build 7568

    OS:debian

    ip:10.0.4.51

    localhost

    OS:Window XP SP2

    firewall:sysgate personal firewall 5.0

    ip:10.0.4.52

Common gateway for both is 10.0.4.254 which both interfaces can ping for.

Objective at hand: To set up server on vmware hence localhost can access.

Problem: Whenever i do a ping on the localhost to the vm, the ping request will get through. However, this is not the case when i tried to pull the ping request from vmware to localhost host XP OS. I am suspecting that it has something to do with the firewall rule.

Can someone advise me how i should do next?

    Hi,

Is it possible to see why a device is unreachable ?

Some devices are unreachable, but I know that these devices can be reached by Ping, SSH and the SNMP is correct.

I have enabled debugging in CS, but the log only tells me that the device is unreachable, no reason is given.

    Any good ideas ?

    Kind regards

DB:3.19:Unreachable Devices In Common Services pd

    Hi

Ok, so you have LMS 3.0.1. According to the the device supported document : http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/3.0.1/device_support/table/lms301sdt.html

that router is going to need Cisco IOS 11.2(25)a as a minimum.

I would view the output on a "Show snmp" to see if there's any errors during the LMS discovery process. It could be a bug, but i would try the snmp walk for object id on the device from the LMS server to see if the router will at least repond to snmp.

Hello. I have a probably very simple issue that I need some help with. I have one Network running fine. I wish to add a second subnet to this topology. However I'm not sure of the details. Here is what I have:
    Network A: 192.168.25.0
    T1 --- Router --- Switch --- Server A NIC1
    Network B: 192.168.24.0
    Switch --- Server A NIC2

The NIC 1 of my server connects to the Network A switch. The NIC 2 connects to Network B switch. (I have configured the second NIC without a gateway.) On ServerA I can ping equipment on the Network B, however on other machines in Network A I cannot ping
Network B, and vice versa. What am I missing in this scenario? Is there a guide for what I am sure is a common configuration scenario? Server A is W2k8r2Eric Downing

DB:3.16:2 Nics 2 Subnets, One Gateway zx

I read through your edits where you added the static route on each router/gateway. That is the correct way to do it. Each host on a subnet relies on it's own gateway to route packets to the intended recipient, therefore the static routes need to be added
on each, as you've seen first hand, and as my static route example depicts. It's all in the routers!
As far as the last post:
The way I see it, packets from network A traveling to Network B have to hit the switch, then the gateway, then back to the switch, then NIC A then NIC B, then a switch, and finally their destination. That seems like a waste. Is there any way
    to shorten this?
I don't know if it is a waste, and I'm not sure by what you mean that it hits the switch, otehr than assuming you mean that each computer is connected to the switch, but then again, if that's what you mean, then yes, that's the way traffic has to be routed
(no pun intended). The routers need to know where to send a packet to, to get to its intended subnet destination.
As for NIC A, then NIC B, well, it's a router, correct? So in this case, yes. On another not, I normally don't like to use Windows Server as a router and would rather just use our infrastructure routers configured to connect/route all traffic between all
segments. Besides, using Windows is a pretty expensive router, if you think about it, and would rather use a dedicated device for such tasks that would actually be more efficient. To continue this thought, it's actually cheaper AND more efficient to use a
Layer 3 switch, where you can configure specific ports as VLANs instead of switched, for each segment and everything interconnects on the same device, unless of course the segments are in other buildings or locations.

Yes, PIX never allow user/host on any interface/segment to ping direct to PIX's other interface, e.g inside user pinging outside or DMZ interface IP. Only pinging to directly connected interface is allowe. The previous post was meant to ping direct from outside/internet to pix outside interface. I misinterpret the question.

I have difficulty to connect FP-1601 to my computer using MAX. "The connection to remote device timed out." message pop up everytime. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

If you already assigned an IP address to your module, try pinging it first (StartRun Ping x.x.x.x).

If you don't get an answer the problem is there. A common cause for this is using a wrong cable. If you are connecting directly from your network card you will need a cross cable.
Another potential problem is firewall blocking. You need to allow MAX in your firewall.
Yet another is not being on the subnet as the device and having the subnet mask block your communication.

Did you manage to talk to it in the past?
Does it have an IP address?

Attached please find the Pinging result.

    A couple of Dont's:

DON'T start a new thread to continue the discussion. It only makes it less likely you will get an answer. Simply reply in the original thread.

DON'T post bmp files. Paint in Windows XP can save files as JPG, PNG, and GIFs.

OK, so you can ping it (assuming that's the device, you should disconnect it and run the ping again to make sure. If there is no answer, it means it is the device).

In that case, it's possible that the firewall is blocking MAX. Do you have any other networked controller connected which work?

To allow MAX in the firewall go to the firewall settings (probably in the control panel) and find the list of the allowed programs. Add MAX to that list and see if that helps.

    DB:3.06:Ping Function In 2950 zd

    Hi,

Just reiterating what I stated earlier, you would use the default gateway command when the switch is a layer 2 switch. You would use the default route, i.e 'ip route', command if ip routing is enabled in the switch.

In the second case the router would route traffic, like any other layer3 device, to any network based on the most specific match. If there's no specific match for that destination then it would use the default route, also called gateway of last resort, and route the traffic to that next hop address.

    Hope that helps!

I've done a speed test with my internet connection and I don't doubt I have a bad internet connection. Im getting: 10.90 upload and 0.99 download. My ping is: 29.

Am I right in saying, the lower the ping the better the internet connection is in regards to talking with servers. I was told anything under 50 is good for online gaming. My playstation 3 is connected wirelessly. I do notice less lag when the console is connected by ethernet however this isn't always an option. (internet router is downstairs and can only connect it at night when everyone has gone to bed.)

I guess my most common concern is when playing call of duty: black ops. Is it just this game is the best known game to have the worst lag? Other call of duty games and other games in general like Resident evil, Gran Turismo 5 etc work perfect. Just black ops!!

Im happy my mate is in the same boat when we play MW2 and it lags, his lags too. He's given up on the online Black ops and just sticks to the Zombies simply because the multiplayer lag annoys him!

DB:3.00:Internet Ping - Online Gaming And Cod: Black Ops. ks

Not had a problem with Black Ops really, I've had it more with MW2.

The lower the ping the quicker a response is sent back and forth (hence PING, PONG). The lag and ping is measured in ms (milliseconds).

This could be due to the area you live in. Phone up your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and moan about your constant network trouble, they will normally sort it out for you.

AHHHHHHH. You're talking about FRAME AGGREGATION. This came over from the 802.11n days.

That setting can be modified under the "advanced" tab.

The default is 32 frames and 50000 bytes, with a maximum of 32 frames x 65535 bytes.

You're right, if there is lots of noise from outside-network sources, then dropping these aggregated packets will trigger retransmissions.

Feel free to modify this value, maybe 16/25000 would be a good start for you. I wouldn't disable it completely though, as that can cause a serious throughput hit to your sector. (bandwidth vs latency)

I've got two MacBooks running Leopard 10.5.6, both on the same WiFi network and both with valid local IP addresses (192.168.1.nn type). Each can ping the router which is running the network (192.168.1.254) and both can look at the Internet, and each can ping itself, but neither can ping the other. AFAICS I'm not running in Stealth mode and the Firewalls are letting stuff through. One of the machines is running Little Snitch, but this allows all connections on the local network.

When I try to ping, I get

ping: sendto: No route to host
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    ping: sendto: Host is down

DB:2.95:Why Can't Macs Ping Each Other On Local Network? mf

    Thanks for the reply.

I thought I HAD disabled Little Snitch - for example I set it to its widest possible setting and then quit, but maybe I only quit from the configuration program and not LS itself (I wasn't my idea to install LS and I know very little about it).

As to the other questions: yes, there is just one wifi network and one router in the location in question. The router's local address is 192.168.1.254 and it can be pinged from either Mac (even the one running Little Snitch).

I have now taken the MacBook that has never run Little Snitch and have joined it to another wifi network with one PC in it. This PC can ping the MacBook and vice versa. This points to LS as the problem - but I'm in the wrong location, so I have to postpone the rest of the investigation until I get back there. I still don't understand why ping didn't work in either direction - I would have thought that LS would only block incoming connections. Mysterious things, networks.

    DB:2.95:Ping From A Layer 2 Switch 89

It's not possible to ping from the switch without an IP configured (management vlan). If an IP is configured on the switch, ip default-gateway is required in order to ping a device in another subnet than the management vlan.

3560 has L3 capabilities but you can use the switch as L2 switch (no ip routing).

I have a dell inspiron 600m. The wireless connection seems to be working great. However, randomly in my network places/microsoft windows network/ I cannot access other shared document on other wired or wireless connected clients.

For Ex: 600m is connected wirelessly with excellent connection. I am trying to access shared documents from ABC (regular LAN connection) and I cannot. When I try to ping ABC it resolves the IP address however it doesn't ping, I get request timed out. When I try to access XYZ (regular LAN connection) I can access all the shared documents without any issues.

It is very random. Because after I restarted the laptop I was able to connect to ABC for a few seconds. The only thing that is common in this situation is that one of the connection is wireless connection.

    Hi ramzez

Thanks for your post here and for your postcode. I’ve just looked at the cell site you are connecting too at that location (1608) and can confirm your slightly larger ping times will be due to congestion on the site.

Can you tell me if this improves at certain times of the day? (Outside of 8am – 6pm peak times.)

There is a planned site in that very location (Site 79098) that should eleaviate some of the load on site 1608 so once this comes up and running, you should see better ping times. Unfortunately I can’t give you any timescales as to when this site will be operational.

    Hi.

I've been searching the forums and the best info i could come up with on this topic was one person saying "Eureka, i've done it!" and then several hundred "Please send me your config" responses.

I have succeeded in establishing a tunnel between the pix and the Linksys router, and i can ping thru the tunnel.

But nothing other than ping seems to go thru the tunnel. The access-lists on the pix do not restrict on port, and (for testing) i have the linksys firewall wide open. So i am not sure where i've gone wrong.

I was hoping that this might be a common situation and someone could point me in the right direction to find the solution.

    Thanks!

    DB:2.89:Pix 515 To Linksys Befsx41 Vpn jk

    Jeff,

I know it seems strange that you can ping, yet cannot get traffic through, but it's really not.

As mentioned in my previous reply, ACL's can really trip you up, if they are not applied correctly.

Too, remember a PIX Firewall, and a Router both process ACL's in a different order, and if you are getting a ping, but no traffic, check your ACL's.

Congrats on getting it accomplished, ACL's are tricky and take a little time to get used to, but the more you practice, and the more comfortable you become with them, it will almost be second nature.

    Have a good one.

My computer passed on every aspect other than this. I think microsoft security essentials 'free' does not in fact provide a firewall ?

    Is this the problem ?

    Thanks.

DB:2.89:Shields Up Shows Essentials Has No Firewall 7s

Unless your PC is directly connected to the Internet via either dial-up or some other technology that doesn't use a hardware router, such as directly to a cable modem, it's likely that test was actually reporting a respone from your router. Most broadband
connections supplied by cable or telecom (ATT, Verizon, etc.) networks todayinclude a router with a built-in firewall which will block the Shields Up! testing.
Whether you have a router or not, a ping response simply means that your router or PC is indicating that it is present, not that there's any direct security risk. Ping is designed so that things like routers can check whether the device at the IP (Internet
Protocol) addressat the other end of a communication can be reached and is 'Alive'. There's nothing wrong and in fact everything right about this, but unknowledgeable teenagers have convinced everyone that this is bad and they must be 'stealth' (no response
    to anything) to be safe.
Unless you know what you are doing or really care to learn about all of this, you're better off leaving it up to your local ISP in most cases, since todaythey typically offer what is required to provide basic security as part of their base Internet package.
If you know someone personally who knows a lot about computers you can ask their help to determine if this has been done and even let them teach you what you have inyour networkif you're interested.
I can't recall the last time I ran a Shields Up! test, it's been several years, because I've had a router since I first got DSL to replace dial-up and so the test is only useful as a sanity check that the router's firewall is configured properly.

Yes if the both ends of a link are not secure it will cause issues. Also, if the site isn't 100% LOS, tree moment can cause this also.Agreed. I recently put a link in where I had to put up a 34' Rohn 25-G tower attached to their building but they needed the link up ASAP so I temporarily put a non penetrating mount on their roof with a 1.5" pipe 15' high with their radio on top. The link worked but since it was a NLOS 2.4 GHz P2P link it would occasionally lose pings and drop out for up to 30 seconds in windy conditions. Once the Rohn tower was up and I moved their radio to the Rohn tower which is ridged in the wind the link is now pretty much Rock Solid!I do not use much 2.4 gear but this was a special case. Hi, Hopefully someone can help me. I am running an XPsp3 box with vmware server 1.1.6 build 91891 i wanted to test if i could replace our ntservers with xp boxes running vmware and a virtual ntserver inside.

The ntserver (guest) is running network station manager software so the thin clients on site connect to it, download their configs then do their work.

The host network adapter is in bridged mode. Everything works perfectly except when i turn on the hosts firewall all traffic to the guest is blocked, i cannot even ping the ntserver from any machine in the network (but i can still ping the XP machine).

It doesn't matter wether the firewall is on or off the host and guest can still ping each other.

    Some details:

O/S: Windows XP sp3 (host) 192.168.34.24 av and firewall installed.

O/S: NTserver sp6 (guest) 192.168.34.20 no av or firewall

Client: Windows XP sp3 (me trying to ping) 192.168.34.42

    Firewall/AV: Trend officescan 8

Im mostly wondering if this is a common problem, if i should be using some other network configuration type in vmware, if i should be contacting trend for help, any other suggestion anyone can throw in.

If you need any more info feel free to ask.

DB:2.87:Host Firewall Blocking Traffic To Guest js

You do not need to turn off the firewall.

I just found this on Trend Micro site: - http://esupport.trendmicro.com/Pages/CPM-with-firewall-enabled-installed-on-a-VMware-host-blocks-traffic-to-.aspx

To resolve this issue, you need to edit a registry key on the CPM) installed on the VM host.

    Please do the following:

On the client machine, open the Registry Editor. Important: Always back up the whole registry before making any modifications. Incorrect changes to the registry can cause serious system problems.

    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\PC-cillinNTCorp\CurrentVersion\PFW.

Change or add the (Dword) value of the "EnableBypassRule" key to "1".

    Reboot the VM host.

    Core Issue
There is a problem connecting to a resource on the far side of a bridge.

    Resolution

    DB:2.86:Connectivity Check 19

    Hi all,

I performed the connectivity check on communication between 2 sites. Local host can ping to remote host and vice versa, without problem.

I am using a common ping test, with 5 packets. But when I tried to browse the remote web server or file shares, or any application, it failed at all.

What further ping or other further test(s) should I perform in order to really ensure that the connectivity is really in the good working condition?

    Thanks in advance!

    DB:2.86:Connectivity Check 19

There are no router being used between these switches. Hence, no ACL. I checked the Switch config file, none of the settings seems to block certain ports.

    What else?

Why can I ping a public IP for a (NAT static) server sitting behind one PIX from inside on one network but cannot do the same on another network with a nearly identical PIX config?

Also, on a network where I can ping the public IP of some servers why can't I ping others?

Maybe you can try the solution of DNS Doctoring, that is you add keyword "dns" in your static commands.

    hi,

"Reply from 192.168.40.1 : TTL expires in transit". whereas 192.168.40.1 is the ip address of the serial port on which i am running the ping command.

I am not sure what platform you are using with the statement route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.10.10.10 1. It looks more like a firewall than an IOS based device which I believe is the focus of the original post.

In any case whether it is IOS or firewall the number that follows the mask in the route statement is not TTL but is distance. Using a distance gives us the ability to configure floating static routes when we configure a distance on the static route other than its default distance. So we can configure a static routes with a distance less attractive than other static routes or less attractive than routes discovered by our dynamic routing protocol. So if a route to some destination is available from some other source then that route is used but if there is no route from another source then the floating static is used. But there is not a way to set the TTL in a static route.

DB:2.84:Windows Server 2012 Teamed Interface Only Replies To Ping From Local Subnet az

There's a bug in Server 2012 NIC teaming. The gist of it is that duplicate default routes are created, and this confuses the network connection.

This is a pretty good write-up on it
    http://www.concurrency.com/blog/bug-in-nic-teaming-wizard-makes-duplicate-default-routes-in-server-2012/

Here's a little powershell/shell script that will automate your fix, it assumes that you only have the one teamed NIC set:
    # Get Interface Index of New Team
    $IntInd=(get-netipconfiguration).interfaceindex
    # Fix bug in Windows Server 2012 NIC teaming
    route -f
    sleep -seconds 10
    New-NetRoute -interfaceindex $IntInd -NextHop yourgateway -destinationprefix 0.0.0.0/0

It could be done all through powershell if you want to selectively clear the routes, but there wasn't a need in my case.

Nope, not 100% sure it's the firewall.  But I have seen it cause issues.  Generally as far as the WLC is concerned, if you have peer-to-peer blocking disabled it's not going to mess with the traffic.

Oh, one last thing, take a look at the WLC interface and see if an ACL has been applied there.

    HTH,

There's a "router address" field that should point to your internal device that does the routing (ie: l3 switch). Is that field empty? If it's blank, then try filling in the gateway ip address.

Take a look at the System Status under Monitoring, is Memory Status "green" or "red". If it's red, you'll need to reboot the vpn box.

    DB:2.82:[Solved] Trouble Compiling Evemu jd

I doubt many archers are familiar with this project, so Ill give a very brief outline. EVEmu is an attempt to make an EVE Online (a space-based MMORPG) emulator, in much the same way MaNGOS emulates a World of Warcraft server, although evemus approach is somewhat different, and, of course, this challenge is much more difficult to tackle. EVE Online is best known for its two servers, Serenity and Tranquility. The former one serves China and the latter one serves the rest of the World. Both of them are massive computer clusters, comprising of vast number of nodes that handle client connections, databases and gameplay (if youre interested in more info http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Tranquility). These servers are capable of serving a huge number of players at the same time (while I played on a trial account, daily peek of population on Tranquility was around 50 thousand players). And the amazing thing is that every single one of them is playing in a single universe, spanning over 7 500 solar systems.

I got carried away . Anyway, even if youre not a gamer, this feat of programming is nothing short of astonishing. Thats why Im trying to contribute to EVEmu, because I think lot of interesting stuff can be learned from it. EVEmu project is several years old, but it had frequent changes in general development ideas, main developers, branches, etc. Not much has been done overall (client can connect to the server, you can create characters and do some free-space flight), and for some time now, SVN access is limited to one dev who is rewriting the whole core all by himself.

Now, the problem that this thread is about is that I cannot compile the latest revision. Something really odd seems to be happening to the linker. These are the lines of interest:

To simplify: I can ping from network host on network A: E0 on RouterA, S0 on RouterA, S0 on RouterB, E0 on RouterB, but no hosts on network B. This is all while ping is executed from command prompt in DOS. But, I CAN ping a host on network B from the Cisco IOS on RouterA. What is happening?

    Thanks.

    DB:2.82:Ping Problems ck

Do a traceroute or tracert from both sides of the network (from workstations) and see where things 'stop' working. That will give you a clue where the problem is. Most probably router b is not advertising the IP subnet (that you are trying to ping) that exists behind router b E0, to router A. The previous posts had some good ideas about default routes too. Do a line by line match between both router configuration files. They should 'mirror' eachother. Please check your workstations and make sure that they are getting the appropriate setup information that was setup by hand the received from the DHCP server. Their default route must be the respective E0 of the attached router. It would have been nice if you had the results of the ping coming from network B towards A.

I have an ESX 2.5.1 Server on a HP DL580 with 16 GB of RAM. We have 10 VM's on this server and recently all have started showinf signs of slower performance and the ping times are intermittently erratic. For example this is a common ping result from all VM's :

I\'d like to rant about this. I too have discovered (and confirmed by an

opened Service Request) that one must reload NETDB.NLM in order for

SYS:ETC\\HOSTS file changes to take effect. These seems obsurd! Oddly, I

have seen it occassionally work magically without having reloaded

NETDB.NLM, so there must be some kind of refresh thing (cache?) going on

    that is happening.

Common on! There *must* be a way to have NETDB at least re-read the HOSTS

file if not have DNS queries always check the HOSTS file first like most

    any other operating system would!

DB:2.81:Thread: Re: Hosts File And Ping cs

There is. from the wsockX.exe readme:

    For Reference:

Command line parameters to reload these files into cache.

WS2_32 RELOAD HOSTS -Reload the SYS:\\ETC\\HOSTS

WS2_32 RELOAD PROTOCOL -Reload the SYS:\\ETC\\PROTOCOL

WS2_32 RELOAD SERVICES -Reload the SYS:\\ETC\\SERVICES

WS2_32 RELOAD RESOLVE -Reload the SYS:\\ETC\\RESOLV.CFG

WS2_32 RELOAD NWSWITCH -Reload the SYS:\\ETC\\NWSWITCH.CONF

I am using Linksys BEFSX41 version 2. A couple of days ago I did a firewall check on GRC Shields up website. It turns out my firewall passes all the tests-- Solicited TCP Packets, Unsolicited Packets. But it failed to pass the Ping test. It says---

"Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED) — Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation."

First I thought it was my computer's firewall problem(Btw, I use comodo firewall). I configured the firewall to block all incoming connection. After that I did the test again. But Alas! same result. It still failed to pass the ping test. After that I talked to a comodo Tech upport. She checked everything and said it was a problem with my ROUTER's FIREWALL. I need to configure my firewall correctly in order to pass that test because it's my firewall that's accepting the ping request. It never happened before but started to happen after I updated to the latest firmware 1.52.15.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem so that my router won't response to ping request?? Please help me people!!!

DB:2.80:Firewall Problem With Befsx41 Version 2 After Updating To Firmware 1.52.15. Please Help.. zs

To disable the Firewall on your Router You just need to login to your Router setup page. Click on the Security Tab.. and Uncheck Firewall Protection and Disable Block Anonymous Internet Requests and then you can try the test.

Is there anything else I can try?

I'm having the following helloworld java program which uses JNI native calls to a C++ program printing Hello world !

Here, even though the 100 SOP statements printing 'Ping !' comes after the native calls in the program flow, the program outputs 'Hello world !' only after the 100 'Ping!' is printed. Is there any way by which control can be returned back to java program before itself so that the 'Hello world' statement comes before.

I guess its not happening because of the slowness of JNI calls because in that case the 'Hello world!' would have printed in between those 100 ping lines.

If you want to ping the same interface that you are physicly connected, as your server to the PIX, then you need to configure the "icmp" command.

Ping is not a stateful protocol. To allow pings from the inside to the outside interface you need to create an access-list.

    example:

See: Handling ICMP Pings with the PIX Firewall

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_tech_note09186a0080094e8a.shtml

The PIX and the traceroute Command

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_tech_note09186a00800e9312.shtml

    examples:

    Traveroute

    Microsoft:

    access-group 101 in interface outside

access-list 101 permit icmp any host YourPublicIP unreachable

access-list 101 permit icmp any host YourPublicIP time-exceeded

access-list 101 permit icmp any host YourPublicIP echo-reply

    UNIX:

    access-group 101 in interface outside

access-list 101 permit icmp any host YourPublicIP unreachable

access-list 101 permit icmp any host YourPublicIP time-exceeded

    ICMP command example

    icmp deny any outside

    icmp permit any echo-reply outside

icmp permit host 192.168.1.30 echo inside

icmp permit host 192.168.1.31 echo inside

DB:2.80:Directly Connected Networks... Why Cant I Get To Ips On Different Switches But In A Common Subnet??? ds

    Hi,

I've set up a pair of switches in a DMZ type environment that hangs off of our DMZ firewall.

The firewall has a static route to the supernet hosted on the switches via switch interface 10.1.191.12

The static route is:  10.1.160.0 /19  via 10.1.191.12

The firewall has the local interface address 10.1.191.11 /28

       Switches 01 and 02 have a floating HSRP address of 10.1.191.12 /28

Switch 01 has a vlan interface address of 10.1.191.13 /28

Switch 02 has a vlan interface address of 10.1.191.14 /28

The firewall is completely open at the moment.  From my desktop on the other side of the firewall from the 10.1.160.0 /19 network I can happily ping all the addresses mentioned above.  i.e. From my desktop (IP 10.0.33.50) I can ping 10.1.191.11, 12, 13, 14.

I've also configured another network across the switch pair:  10.1.160.0 /24

This network has a VLAN interface set up on each switch as follows:

Switch 01 has a vlan interface address of 10.1.160.251 /24

Switch 02 has a vlan interface address of 10.1.160.252 /24

From each switch I can ping the 10.1.160.25x address thus subnet connectivity is fine across the two switches.

From my desktop on the other side of the firewall from the 10.1.160.0 /19 network I can happily ping the 10.1.160.251 address.

    NOW the Problem....

From my desktop on the other side of the firewall from the 10.1.160.0 /19 network I CAN NOT ping the 10.1.160.252 address.

i.e. I can only ping IP addresses hosted by the switch that the next hop for the firewall points to (i.e. 10.1.191.12)

I don't understand why I can only ping IP addresses on other subnets when the IP address is local to the switch that is hosting the next hop IP that the firewall is set to use!!

Please can somebody explain what the problem is here!?

    * Please let me know if further clarification is required on this question!!?

    Hi,

Just thought I'd update this as I figured out what the problem was.

I was using a default route instead of a static route to get back to the internal company network via the firewall.  As soon as I put a static route on instead and enabled IP routing the routing started to work fine for all subnets this side of the firewall.

Not firewall or anything in the guests, because VM4 on host1 *CAN* ping VM1.

Seems like an arp, or vNetwork issue.

I normally use an abstraction network between my pix and internet gateway with private addressing. This makes the outside interface of the pix invisible to the outside world but gives you full functionality.

Respond to Ping on Internet Ports is unchecked but it still responds to ping. Checking Disable Ping Reply on LAN Ports disables ping response on both lan and wan.

DB:2.80:Ping And Telnet Issue Fvs338 km

It is normal on many commercial routers when you are behind the lan if you ping the WAN interface or try and telnet through the WAN the router knows that the request is being made from the LAN side and so it will still process the request as being a LAN request and not a WAN request. It is an outbound service and not an inbound service and so the firewall sees the request and processes it accordingly.

DB:2.79:Nat And Host Only Networks dz

    Greetings all,

I have a configuration that is behaving in what I believe is a strange way and I'm hoping someone can confirm either this behavior is correct or I have something configured incorrectly.

I am simulating 2 sites connected by a WAN to test software configuration. In order to do that, I configured 2 Win Server 2003 VMs as routers, resulting in 3 networks. The network common to both VMs (WAN) is configured on the NAT VMnet. The other 2 networks/VMnets (the LANs) are Hostonly.

After adding the network adapters and configuring IP, I did a quick ping test from one VM to the other and the results are confusing me. Routing had not been configured on either VM, but I could ping from one VM through the other to the opposite "LAN" IP. Monitoring the LAN port while pinging revealed that the source IP for the ping belonged to the host adapter for the LAN VMnet. Thinking that behavior strange, I reconfigured the WAN network to be Hostonly, and I could not ping from one VM through the other until networking was configured on the VMs.

From reading the VMWare Server user guide, it seems to me that NAT should not automatically route traffic between VMnets.

So the question is, is VMWare behaving properly and I'm interpreting the way the virtual network should work incorrectly? Or, is VMWare behaving strangely and I simply have to be aware of that?

    Thanks for the help.

DB:2.79:Nat And Host Only Networks dz

    jdconestoga schrieb:
One final question. From the VMWare docs, my understanding is no traffic should pass outside of the virtual network if the VMnet is Hostonly.

That is true as long as

    - No routing is enabled on the host, as this handles all interfaces as normal interfaces. But by default, there's no routing enabled.

    - The default setting in a host-only guest, served by the VMware DHCP server is to have no default gateway and thereby it doesn't know how to handle packets for other subnets.

But if you enable routing on the host and give the host only guests a default gateway (the host virtual adapter), you can leache that network.

Is my interpretation correct that the actual process is the traffic is being passed through the NAT interface to the host, the host then recognizes the target network due to the content of its routing table, and the host then sends the traffic to the target through the virtual interface because the host actually considers itself to be part of the VMnet?

It must not be the NAT interface, every virtual interface of the host is added to the host routing table. The packet will be send to the default gateway and the routing engine will choose the shortest path. In you case it has en interface in every network, so it can be routed directly from the NAT interface (as this is the default gateway to the guests via the VMnetx interface of the host to the second guest.

Yikes. So we can't guarantee that an application that uses common in JBoss AS 4.x will run in JBAS 5.0 without scoping.Sounds nasty.I should revert our dependency to be jboss commons (same as AS 4.2) so *at least* we can guarantee it will run unscoped in AS 4.2.But this means we will have to release a different release of JBM that is guaranteed to run in JBAS 5.0 which has dependencies aligned with AS 5.0 dependencies.Either that, or an explicit compatibility is defined and tested somehow between the old commons and the new common core etc.

If I do manual sync it is working just fine. FWs we do have one hour session timeout and ISA 2006 it is 30 minutes.

Some of our users have noticed this same problem when they have used other GRPS etc.. Currently I do not have that problem.

Is there a way to perform a ping sweep of an entire subnet on a router without using a third party utilitiy?

    Thanks in advance.

    DB:2.78:Ping Sweep On Router j7

You can try a TCL script like the following. Assuming your network is 10.1.1.0/24 (.1-.254)

    tclsh

    for {set i 1} {$i = 254} {incr i} {set var 10.1.1.append var $iping $var rep 3 time 1}

    ROUTER(tcl)#tclquit

Remember to use tclquit to exit the TCL prompt.

I am trying to create an app that can display various network devices on my network (kind of a network monitoring thing). Not all the devices are servers and the only thing that all these devices have in common is that they have an IPv4 address.
I am just looking for a way to Ping these devicesto make sure that they are still alive and connected. Is that possible usingVB in a Metro App?I have tried the usual ping methods and they don't appear to work in a windows 8 metro app. I
have also tried to open my own ICMP socket and I don't think the metro app knows what ICMP is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a CUE module on my 2811 router.

I can open the cue interface and ping the router without problems, but when i try to ping outside the router, ping my own IP it says destination host unreachable.

I have an IP route in the router: 192.168.5.2 255.255.255.255 fastethernet0/0

So basically, since i can ping the router, it should go out through there when i try to ping my computer?

I have installed the Native file access for Windows on all three of my

am unable to ping the server by their Windows names for example:

    Ping Server_B - OK

Ping Server_B_W - Hosts not found

    Ping Server_C - OK

Ping Server_C_W - Hosts not found

    What could cause this?

All server show up in network neighborhood, just server b and c give an

    error of host not found.

    Just wondering,

DB:2.78:Thread: Can't Access Two Of Three Native Windows Servers df

yep, makes sense, and I answered your WINS question in the thread that you posted at the top of the forum.

    ken@rlmrlm.com 02-Nov-04 14:17:41

the other 2 servers are not registering in WINS, check their CIFS =

configuration (WINS Server). Reboot the NetWare servers to get them

    to =

register. If all else fails, just create a static WINS entry in the

    WINS =

server..... This all ASSUMES that you are using a WINS server, if you =

don\'t have one, then your best bet would be to create the server_w

    names

    =

    in your DNS domain.

I filled in the WINS ip address in Console one for each server and

    bounced

the server but they still did not connect through Network Neighborhood.

How do I find out if they are WINS servers? I finally used a DNS entry

    and now they connect.

Now I find that the server that did not connect before are now allowing

access to any and all directories in those particular servers. I am

currently scanning the Knowledge base to see if there is a correction

    for

    this.

    Any ideas?

    Ken@rlmrlm.com

Ok, I found a TID that explains why I am able to see all directories when

logging into CIFS. I was logging into CIFS from a work station with a

user that has administrative rights under a user that a user that does not

have administrative rights. Therefore the admin rights were being

transfered to the user with less rights. When I went to a workstation

with the correct user it all worked great. I hope this makes sense.

    Anyway thanks for the help,

DB:2.78:Common Services Device Discovery Setting sc

    Hi Experts,

There are two doubts on the setting for Device Discovery.

    1. If I have add a network address for ping sweep (e.g. 172.17.0.0 | 255.255.255.0) and 172.17.0.10 in the filter exclude IP address, will LMS still try to discover 172.17.0.10? The purpose in doing so is trying to get rid of 172.17.0.10 from unreachable device list.

    2. After all devices are discovered by LMS, the IP addresses for those devices are changed. Say from 10.x.x.x to 192.168.x.x. Will LMS capable to discover those devices back by having changes make in seed device list?

    Regards,

    Yi Shyuan

DB:2.78:Common Services Device Discovery Setting sc

    Hi sven,

Based on your explanation, am I right to say that if a same device is now discovered using new management IP address, the old management IP address will still remain in CS database? Will it be displayed in the device management list as well? What will be the status? Reachable or unreachable? ( I supposed the status should now be unreachable as the old management IP address is now no longer in use.)

    Hiya there

I'm using the TP-LINk TL-WR1043ND router instead of a home hub on BT Infinityv2

The router seems to be working great, but i did call at www.grc.com today to check if the routers firewall seemed to be working, it seemed to have stealthed all the ports fine (i assume it was my router) but failed the overall test as i got the following message.

Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED) — Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation.

I have checked the routers settings and the firewall is ON, I wonder if anyone could help me ensure that my router doesn't respond to ping tests, many thanks

    Andy

DB:2.78:Wlc5508 Wireless Clients Cant See Each Other xm

    Richard,

The first thing to check is under WLANS WLAN  - edit the SSID your clients are connected to and goto the advanced tab.

Look for the drop-down box for P2P Blocking Action make sure this is set to Disabled. Any other setting prevents clients from talking to each other.

Hope this helps.... Please rate useful posts.

    Hello Everyone,

I am running vmserver 2.0 on a windows vista host. My VM is a MS server2008. Everything is running fine except i dont see VMNET0 under connections in the host pc. All i see is my local lan, vmnet1 and 8. The Vmware bridge protocol is installed and running. Does VMNET0 automatically bind to local lan, or should i see a seperate connection for this?

In the vmware network tools, i am able to specify automatic bridge, or set it manually to vmnet0 , and still no change.

I am able to ping the VM, however the VM cannot ping the host or out to the internet. VM Is only able to ping the common router. When i try to ping yahoo.com, it will resolve the IP but will time out.

I have it set up in birdge mode.

the only two things i havent checked is .... i am running zone alarm on the host pc, and i am using a small belkin wi fi router. not sure how this will effect the setup, because the vm should be able to ping the host anyway correct?

    thanks in advance..

are you using any virtual port?

If the ping fails, it means that the connectivity  between both mgmt0 interfaces does not exist or that they are not  interconnected properly.

Make sure the mgmt0 interface is unshut and that you can ping the switch mgmt0 interface.

The ASA algoritm from PIX does not treat ICMP protocol as "statefull". You have to open in both directions.

Only for a outside to inside "ping", open ICMP echo from outside and ICMP echo-reply from inside
