You can either reset the router back to its factory defaults and re-configure the settings again, or, if you didn't set upa custom password of your own,you can tell us the make and model number of your router and we will try to look up the default username and password for you.

Also, I believe that this would have been better posted in a new separate thread that you created rather than in an existing sticky help topic so I have split it out and placed it here.

toomanydonuts,I found a little more info that does seem to indicate that Moskowitz was indeed refering to dictionary words rather than randomly generated characters:For the technically inclined, each word in your Diceware passphrase yields 12.9 bits of entropy, the way passphrase security is measured. A five word Diceware passphrase would have an entropy of at least 64.6 bits; six words would have 77.5 bits, seven words 90.4 bits. Inserting a letter at random adds about 10 bits of entropy. This assumes, of course, that you actually keep your passphrase a secret.

Connect your computer straight to the modem and download the firmware file for your router from www.linksys.com/download After downloading the firmware connect your modem to the Internet port on the router and connect your computer to port1 on the router...

Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for another 30 Seconds.Plug the power back in, and keep holding down the reset button for 30 Seconds.Release the reset button.
Open the Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 in the Address Bar and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as admin all in lower cases and then click on ok. Now click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' to select the extracted/uncompressed .img or .bin file and click on "Upgrade"...After doing the firmware upgrade you have to reset this router again for 30 seconds.

Hi, Just bought a HP Deskjet F4580 for my Daughter at Uni, Now i understand the setup procedure for the wireless router, and the fact that nosey neighbors cant see it, but.. the router is used by all the guys in the house (securely), so they will be able to see the printer, my question is, how do i lock it down to Candy's Laptop, I don't want the other users to see it or print on it

    Many Thanks

    Richard

DB:3.34:Secure Wireless From Other Users On Router 19

The most straight forward method would be to purchase another wireless-router and set it up to create a second wireless network with a different wireless name (SSID) and security key (WPA2-PSK) than the main wireless router. Then connect the second router's WAN port to one of the main router's LAN ports.

Connect both the printer and daughter's laptop to the second router's wireless network. This setup will effectively isolate the house guests using the main router from your daughter's private network.

One caveat -- make sure that the DHCP server on the main router is leasing out IP addresses from a different subnet from the second router. For example, if the main router's DHCP server leases IP address are in the form of 192.168.0.x, then the second router's DHCP server should be configured to lease IP addresses in the form 192.168.1.x (the third number should be different).

Whats the simplest , "secure network for dummies" type solution? PLEASE HELP. thanks

DB:3.32:How Can I Get A Secure Network For Dummies dj

Pretty easy steps, I'm just gonna go off my head real quick..

Open your browser, in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 (sometimes with a Netgear it's 192.168.0.1)

    Default login should be: admin / admin | admin/password | admin/1234

Click no for any updates (firmware usually takes 30 minutes to update, do it later)

Select wireless settings and for security encryption select WPA2-PSK, fill in the passphrase and save.

If 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 don't bring you to the login page hold the windows key and press R at the same time. Type in CMD, press OK. In the prompt type "IPCONFIG" press enter and locate the Default Gateway and type that
    in your browser.

    *Updated Answer*

    Steps provided by Netgear;

    Configuring WPA/WPA2:

Use an Ethernet cable to connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router. In a web browser, enter the router's IP address - eitherhttp://192.168.0.1 or
    http://192.168.1.1 by default.Whenprompted for a Username and Password,enterthe default usernameand password(admin;
password) unless you have already changed it. NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.

For Steps 4-9, refer to Figure A below.
SelectWireless Settingsfrom theSetup menu in the left-hand navigation bar.Under Wireless Network, enter your desired network name in the
Name (SSID) box.UnderSecurity Options, selectWPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].UnderSecurity Options (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK), enter your desired network password into the
    Passphrase box.

WRITE DOWNor KEEP NOTE ofyour network name, securityoption and passphrase-you will require them to connect wireless computers and devices to your network.
Click Apply to save the settings.

I would like to set up an open wireless network for web access only and keep the 2nd WPA wireless network and the internal wired network secure from this open network.  Not finding any clear indication of how to do this in the manual.  Tnx for any advice.

DB:3.32:Rv180w Router -Configuring Network Secure From Open Wireless ff

Amjad - you were correct about VLAN being the answer and I eventually figured it out.  Since this router provides multiple wireless networks, I was surprised that the manual didn't outline how to do this since creating a public and private network would be one main reason to buy this product.

The default setting is for everything to be on VLAN1.  I created a 2nd VLAN for the open wireless network with a different IP subnet and defined a DHCP range and once I figured out that "Inter-VLAN Routing" needed to be enabled on both VLANS, then everything worked.  I suppose that "Inter-VLAN Routing" is how VLAN 2 gets across to VLAN 1 and the gateway, but it doesn't allow connections to anything on VLAN 1 except the gateway.  This is what I wanted.

    Thanks again.

    Hi there,

I'm very new to wireless networking, but thought I'd give it a try. I just got Comcast and a wireless router. I have 2 laptops and a desktop. The Internet connection is great on all of them, but I have the feeling my network is not secure. How to I prevent outside users (like my neighbors) from using my wireless connection?

    DB:3.24:Securing My Wireless Network c9

Some manufacturers provide their user docs as PDF files on the CD. Linksys does this, chosing to provide just the basic setup instructions and have hte more comprehensive documentation in digital form, which makes the product cheaper. Paper docs are expensive to print.

But this is easy stuff. The SSID, broadcast, and MAC filtering options are simply options on the router's setup pages, just go look, you will find them. WPA is more complicated and you need to have the proper drivers to support it fromt he wireless adapter manufacturer. If they do support WPA, then on the router select WPA, the algorithm you want to use (AES or TKIP) and the key to use. Duplicate this information in your wireless adapter setup (this varies by OS and manfacturer unless you're using XP, where it's all the same). And that's it.

When I try to connect my PC via the wireless network (to the CISCO Router), via CISCO's AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, the WiFi connection never actually takes place - rather the CISCO AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client s/w interface suggests that it is "associating" and seems to go into an endless loop. It never receives a DHCP address from the CISCO router. ( see attached picture ).

If I disable the "Cisco AnyConnect Network Access Manager" service, as well as the "Cisco AnyConnect Network Access Manager Logon Module" service within Windows 7, I have no problems establishing a WiFi network with my CISCO router via the traditional Windows approach of connecting to a WiFi network. The inability to connect wirelessly comes back, when these services are re-enabled. It appears to me (a layman) as if the "Network Access Manager" layer is preventing connection to the CISCO router via WiFi.

I have no problems connecting to the CISCO router using CISCO AnyConnect Secure Mobile client over a physical Ethernet cable. You don't need CD to configure your wireless router, you can just log on to wireless router management page (usually is http://192.168.1.1) to configure it again, don't forget to configure the IP of your computer as 192.168.1.x. This iswireless router configuration example that includes wireless encryption setup, feel free to have a look.

DB:3.21:How Do I Set Up My Wireless Router For A Secure Connection 8m

First of all do not use the Wireless computer to access the Router's setup page.Use the wired computer.Check the ip address you are getting from the router..Click Start All Programs Accessories Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...

IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...

If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...

If you get 4 replies then, adjust Browser Settings... Open an IE, click Tools Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on OK...Close the IE and re-open it...

    Now try.......

First upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your Linksys router and then try to secure the network.

To upgrade/re-flash the firmware on your Linksys router follow these steps

Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in search tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop

    Firmware Upgrade/Reflash
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful" After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed

Were there any activation instructions for you to follow when you installed the new gateway? You may need to call Comcast to have it activated. Is this new service, or were you replacing an older modem?

The top sticky thread in this forum instructs you on how to secure a wireless router. That post uses a Linksys WRT54G router as an example. Your post is very unclear as to exactly what you have, all I can discern is you are using some model of Linksys router with 2.4GHz wireless-G. In the future, please include exact model information, and be careful of your spelling, dropping letters when describing technical information can leave to very different meanings.

I don't really understand when you say "i want to disable the default unsecure connection now that I have a password secured connection set up".

That makes me think that you have 2 connections, meaning 2 routers. One secured and one unsecured. If you have a secured connection already, people can't connect to that. If you already changed the router's settings to another one (different ssid, WPA2) then that is your default connection. Let me know if we are on the same page here.

Whenever I log into the router administration page (after connecting to the Internet with an Ethernet cable and being connected to the non-secure network) , the page just lists the secure network. It seems the router acknowledges only one valid network, the secure one, and that the non-secure one is just a ghost. The problem is that my roommates and the neighbourhood can still pick up the signals of both networks, the secure and non-secure one, and my limit of downloading is always exceeded.

Any suggestions about what should I do?

    DB:3.09:Is Wgx102 Powerline Leg Secure? 3d

I have a Wireless router that can't reach a couple of spots in our home. I'm considering buying a WGX102 setup to build a couple of hotspots for where the router can't reach. My question is: is the powerline leg of the distribution secure? I know the wireless transmission at the remote bubble is encrypted, but how about the powerline part between the router/WGX102 wallplug and the wall-transmitter. Anybody know?

I,m trying to set up a wireless network with a WPC54G and a D-Link router. The router has no secure setup button on it. The network card (WPG54C) cannot find the router. I get the message : No push button setup enabled router is found. Any suggestions??????

    DB:3.09:No Secure Setup Button 1m

well no need to press anything on the router, SES button is specifically for linksys routers...anyways let me know which operating system are you using on computer...if computer is running on Win XP…. you need to completely uninstall wireless adapter from computer click on start programs wireless Gnotebook adapter uninstall, insert the CD for adapter and restart the computer, one window would pops up found new hardware, install only the drivers no need to install software or utility and use WZC to manage wireless connections…check whether it works or not.

Whats the model number of your Router?

So you want to setup a Secured Wireless Network ? Assuming you have a G Series router, below are the settings which you need to change on your router to secure your Wireless Network.

Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank in Password use admin in lower case...

For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -

    Click on the Wireless tab

    - Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...

    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless Wireless Security...

Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.

NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...

Now on your wireless computer locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

Does your borrowing internet use my wireless router? If so how is it separate frommy secure WiFi home network as stated in your FAQ.

"Your XFINITY Wireless Gateway broadcasts an additional “xfinitywifi” network signal for use with XFINITY WiFi. This creates an extension of the XFINITY WiFi network right in your home that any XFINITY Internet subscriber can use to sign in and connect. This XFINITY WiFi service is completely separate from your secure WiFi home network."

DB:3.07:Re: Home Address Listed As A Hot Spor 7j

I found this by doing a quick search on the net.. http://wifi.comcast.com/faqs.html

We encourage all subscribers to keep this feature enabled as it allows more people to enjoy the benefits of XFINITY WiFi around the neighborhood. You will always have the ability to disable the XFINITY WiFi feature on your Wireless Gateway by calling 1-800-XFINITY. You can also visit My Account at https://customer.comcast.com/, click on “Users Preferences”, and then select “Manage XFINITY WiFi.”

Thanks for the great info, Baric.

I still seem to have a problem configuring my company's HP laptop (Windows XP) to access the WRT54GS router in my house, however. (The wife's Mac G4 works great, though.) I enteredtheHPwireless address into the router's MAC filter, and the laptop recognizes the network, but I only get prompted for a WEP (not WPA) password authorization, and seem to strike out no matter what I do. Do I just have a somewhat dated laptop that doesn't recognize WPA? Thanks.
