    I have some code (supplied below) which tries to read contents of a resource referred by a URL.
    public class URLTest {
    public static void main(String... args) throws Exception {
    URL u = new URL(args[0]);
    InputStream is = u.openStream();
    // more code goes here:
    }
    }If you create a jar file in /tmp/b.jar and run this program as shown below:

    java pkg.URLTest jar:file:/tmp/b.jar!/

    it produces the following exception:
    Exception in thread "main" java.io.IOException: no entry name specified
    at sun.net.www.protocol.jar.JarURLConnection.getInputStream(JarURLConnection.java:131)
    at java.net.URL.openStream(URL.java:1007)
    at pkg.URLTest.main(URLTest.java:20)

    If you pass the argument as jar:file:/tmp/b.jar!/c.jar then it opens a stream that points to c.jar which is embedded inside b.jar.

    My question is, what is the motivation behind not allowing user to open a stream to jar:file:/tmp/b.jar!/ which according to the javadocs of JarURLConnection represents a JAR File?

    Thanks,

    If you need a stream to the JAR, don't use the jar: protocol. That's not what it's for. It is for entries, and the entry name is compulsory.

    DB:2.68:Bpm Javadocs (And Others?) 1p

    For this one workflow I'm working on I want take advantage of the process variables. I have a custom workflow method that needs to read them, but the API's for doing this aren't published. Sigh... so after slamming my head down on my keyboard repeatedly I went a quest to see if they are out there.

    Sadly no luck. The only thing I could find was a tiny, tiny one line reference in some example code in one of the manuals to getPrimitiveVariableValue() in com.documentum.bpm.IDfWorkitemEx. I've got that at least, so I can reverse engineer this if I have to... but I really really really don't want to.

    So here's the question? Anyone know how to obtain the mystical BPM Javadocs? For that matter:

    Please, oh please, great and mighty EMC, make any and all API reference documentation available to us developers! We're grateful for the UI improvements, but sometimes we need to go further.Sometimes it's necessary to make several chunked versions of the Javadocs, but it would be most excellent if a giant compendium (ie. just a single friggin' large zip file) of all APIs could be created. Or at the very least, make it easier to link them all together?World peace would be nice.In my old age, my mind isn't what it used to be and it's getting harder to keep track of all the .jar files scattered all across my server like Octomom and her babies. I know that unified logging is coming, but could this one day hold true for the jar libraries? Some consolidation? At the very least, if I get an error message stating that com.emc.documentum.foo.widget.ui.someClass had an error - some way to locate the offending library?

    DB:2.68:Bpm Javadocs (And Others?) 1p

    Bless you my child! I knew the help files were there, but stupidly did not consider that the Javadocs would be there as well. I'm so used to them being packaged separately (ala the DFC and DFS javadocs) or hidden somewhere else.

    It's good to see that little api folder.

    Hi,

    How can I generate javadocs from XML?

I do this so that I don't need to clutter my source code with tons of trivial, tedious bean code. I can do that with ASM (Ref: http://asm.objectweb.org). I use Eclipse, and I want to reference a javadoc jar that has comments pertaining to each getter/setter method of the bean so that Eclipse will show me the pertinent docs in the pop-up as I code. I can add an additional XML element to each XML file -- something like "desc" -- that contains the comments for each field.

    So, does anyone know how to generate javadocs from XML so that I can create a javadoc jar that Eclipse needs for dynamic in-context help when calling a bean's setters/getters? Eclipse seems to have the option to specify only Javadocs, not DOxygen or anything other docs tool...

    Let me describe my setting:

    Under "Tools | Preferences...| Documentation", I have the "Use Local Documentation" option selected. Its value is: "D:/JDeveloper/jdev/doc/ohj/", which contains a slew of JAR files that seem to contain javadocs.

    What happens when I try to view the javadocs for a class in java.lang (e.g., java.lang.String)? Well, I simply get an error message that says, "Unable to resolve the symbol java.lang.String".

    This is especially weird to me since, as I mentioned, I am able to browse the javadoc for the javax.servlet.* classes.

    Can anyone else out there browse the javadocs for the core JDK classes? Try highlighting "String" in your code and pressing the F1 key.

    Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I'm thinking some mapping file is screwed up somewhere.

    DB:2.46:Using Javadocs In Eclipse 31

    Hi,

    Well, Eclipse adds nothing special here. But you have actually an interesting idea...

    Some (long) time ago I used to hear that it was hailed as a big progress a possibility to store all actual descriptions along with the Java code and to generate by them the entire finished documentation automatically. But now, it seems, you want to go back in time...

    I believe, the standard Javadoc is unable to support anything like this.

    However, if you still want to use Javadoc in such an arrangement so as to generate the overall documentation skeleton (as well as to employ Javadoc's HTML output engine), you will need to develop your own doclet or a taglet, at least.

    For instance, you could introduce some special tags using which you would specify the locations of your description files (directly or using some identifiers). Then, your taglet would process those tags, read those descriptions from the files and feed them to Javadoc.

    Another way is to imply the locations of your description files from the program element (i.e. class, method or field) being processed by Javadoc. The doclet API provides all necessary information together with the location of a Java source file. So you could use it to find your custom description files somewhere nearby it.

    I suggest also to look at this product:

    http://www.filigris.com/products/docflex_javadoc/

    This is a highly customizable Javadoc doclet. More precisely, this is a system for rapid development of professional quality doclets from scratch (with the support of both framed/single-file HTML and RTF output). If you are prepared to buy some number of licenses, we could very much customize this product for your needs. So, your task will be solved with no problem.

    The current class path entry belongs to container 'All JBoss Libraries [JBoss 4.2 Runtime]' which does not allow user modifications to Javadoc locations on its entries.How do you guys look up javadoc API in Eclipse, say persistence API docs for entitymanager? Sorry for yet another "eclipse" question, please let me know if I should post it on the eclipse forum (funny though, it seems there is no such thing as "official eclipse forum") Thanks for your advice,

    its the default behavior for programmatic defined classpath containers - we just need to implement a couple of methods to allow it for our classpath containers.I created http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBIDE-1401 for it

    Hi everybody,
    I had a bit of an epiphany recently--I've used getResourceByStream() to get resources in a jar file or off the file system, but even after looking at the javadocs, I'm still not 100% sure exactly how it works.

    I'm curious if anyone knows--can getResourceByStream be used to, say, grab a font file from a jar, or an image, and use them in a custom GUI? It didn't seem to say anything specific in the javadocs about it only being used for text files, but it would be nice if someone could clear this up for me.

    DB:2.39:Recommended Way To Open A Text File Included In A Jar? mj

    Forgive me if this seems like an ignorant question, but I keep reading two different things about loading resources in the javadocs and forums, and can't seem to connect them...

    Say you want to open a text file and read the contents into a String or a List. Apparently, the preferred way to do this is something like:

    fileName = "myFile.txt";
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(new File(fileName)));
    String line;
    while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {...}

    Now say you want to distribute your app in a jar file, with the text file included in the jar file. The above method won't work, because a FileReader operates on a File, and as I understand it, once myFile.txt is packed into the jar file, it's no longer a "file".

    So what do you do? I keep reading that the best way to open the jarred text file is to use something like this:

    InputStream is = getClass().getResourceAsStream(fileName);

    Here's where I get confused: InputStream, and all of its subclasses, are now supposedly dispreferred for reading character data (in preference to Reader, as above). But no subclass of Reader can wrap around an InputStream, which would facilitate the reading of character data greatly, with methods like readLine().

    So my question is: What's the best way to read a text file from within a .jar?

    Thanks,
    Gregory

    DB:2.39:Recommended Way To Open A Text File Included In A Jar? mj

    great! glad it's working

    here is a statement from the javadoc

    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/io/InputStreamReader.html

    For top efficiency, consider wrapping an InputStreamReader within a BufferedReader. For example:

    BufferedReader in
    = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));

    Hi Babak,

    Yeah! Acumen Technologies guys are lurking on this newsgroup too :-)

    I guess my point is that JAXR is targeted at developers that are writing code
    to interact with a registry (like AUDDI), not registry providers like Acumen Tech.
    Pete is in that targeted group, so it (the JAXR RI) maybe something he would be
    interested in investigating. When I said "JAXR-compliant", I was basically referring
    to products from vendors that implement the stuff in %JAXR_LIB%\jaxr-api.jar.
    Sun's RI (%JAXR_LIB%\jaxr-ri.jar), is an example of what I meant by a "JAXR-compliant"
    product :-)

    Regards,

    Mike Wooten

    PS: I want to officially "get in the" for the 2.0 release!

    "Babak Mozaffari" support@acumentechnologies.com wrote:
    Hi Guys, sorry for jumping into the conversation so late.

    As you mentioned yourselves, UDDI only defines a SOAP interface and thus
    no
    standard Java API for UDDI exists.

    Being based on the same SOAP API, most Java APIs bear strong resemblence
    to
    one another, therefore somewhat simplifying migration from one client
    to
    another. As Mike points out, this is not the case with JAXR. In an attempt
    to be generic, JAXR has dissassociated itself from the UDDI API and provides
    new terminology that maps to both UDDI and ebXML.

    As for Acumen's plans, our next release (2.0, due for release this October)
    will include a well-designed Java client along with JavaDocs, documentation
    and samples on how to use it. Though resembling UDDI4J, WebLogic UDDI
    Client
    and other popular client packages, it has been tuned to provide more
    flexibility and ease of use. Numerous class castings required in other
    clients are not necessary and utility methods facilitate the use of UDDI
    to
    publish and retrieve Web Services with minimal understanding of the UDDI
    technology. This client can be used with all UDDI v2.0 registries and
    supports HTTPS calls as well.

    As for being JAXR-compliant, should we be talking about the UDDI registries,
    they are all inherently JAXR-compliant and in fact it is JAXR that is
    UDDI-compliant. So any JAXR implementation may be used to talk to AUDDI
    (UDDI registry of WLS), including the RI. Therefore providing a
    production-quality implementation of JAXR, as valuable as it may be,
    does
    not really fall on the shoulders of a UDDI provider.

    Hi Pete,

    Correct, "the API" is the SOAP requests and responses, not a literalset
    of interfaces
    (i.e. methods, etc) to implement. If you download the Acumen AUDDI1.2
    upgrade
    for WebLogic Server 7.0, you'll find the PDFs for "the API" and datastructure
    specs inside it. Most Java implementations just deal with the datastructures
    as "pure state with relationships".

    Because there is no "set of programming language interfaces" for UDDI,every vendor's
    UDDI implementation will most likely be different! This is, of course,not
    so
    good for folks that want to try out implementations from differentvendors, because
    it means they have to change a bunch of code for each vendor :-) Notcool,
    right?
    Agreed. That's why I introduced the topic of using JAXR-compliantimplementations.
    The only one I know of is the RI (Reference Implementation) that comesin
    the
    Summer '02 JWSDP, from Javasoft.

    Unfortunately, the JAXR API doesn't look anything like the UDDI clientpackages
    from most Java vendors :-( Check out thesamples/jaxr-browser/JAXRClient.java
    file, in the Summer '02 JWSDP download, for the "agonizing reality"!Arrrgh!
    I don't really know about BEA's plans with regards to developing aJAXR-compliant
    implementation, so...

    Michael, sure appreciate your very comprehensive and thoughtfulresponse

    the individual UDDI SOAP messages that a UDDI operator must understand,
    as well
    the appropriate responses. But it does not prescribe a set of "uddiclient
    function
    calls", unless it is implying that each SOAP message should be a function
    call?
    It may be too that I am looking at a different document than you,since
    the UDDI
    "spec" is really a number of separate docs...

    I presume BEA/Acumen will be enhancing the UDDI API to be JAXR-compliant?

    Hi Peter,

    No, the API (i.e. function calls that must be on the inquiry andpublish
    objects)
    is standardized, and appears in the UDDI specification. Note thatthe
    JAXR API
    (http://java.sun.com/xml/downloads/jaxr.html) provides a clientinterface
    to UDDI
    registries, also. In addition, it provides a client interface toebXML
    registries.
    The main reason why folks are considering using JAXR overvendor-specific
    UDDI
    clients (like weblogic.uddi.client.*, and UDDI4J), is that it allows
    them the
    same benefit they get from JAXP - their code should work with anyJAXR-compliant
    UDDI client, from any vendor :-) Which means, they can switch UDDIclient
    packages
    without having to change their code.

    Check out the following link for more specifics:

    http://java.sun.com/xml/downloads/jaxr.html

    FTR (For The Record): weblogic.uddi.client.* is not JAXR-compliantyet.
    I think
    it has complete support for UDDI v1.0, though :-) Not sure if itsupports
    UDDI
    v2.0, because I didn't see stuff like PublisherAssertions in there.The
    Acumen
    Technologies UDDI stuff (in $WL_HOME/server/lib/uddi.war) has support
    for UDDI
    v2.0, though. The developer interface (i.e. java packages, objectinterfaces,
    etc.) is different than the weblogic.uddi.client.* UDDI client, andI
    haven't
    been able to locate Javadocs for it on Acumen's web site(http://www.acumentechnologies.com/site.asp).

    DB:2.38:Jdbc Driver Setmaxrows Documentation Error ds

    The javadoc for statement.setMaxRows(maxROWS) reads:Sets the limit for the maximum number of rows that any ResultSet
    object can contain to the given number. If the limit is exceeded, the excess
    rows are silently dropped.In fact, it seems that the driver calls set rowcount MAXROWS on the connection.While this superficially will work, if your query manipulates records sets that exceed MAXROWS, the subqueries will also be limited in their size. And this is not what you expect. The javadocs suggest that it is only the result that is truncated. Silently.It seems that setFetchSize is more appropriate.I am using a relatively recent jar (248KB).I hope that somebody finds this useful and that the development team will adjust the javadocs or the behavior.Other than that, thanks for a great driver! ;-)

    DB:2.38:Jdbc Driver Setmaxrows Documentation Error ds

    Hi,
    Thank you for pointing out this issue.  Yes, the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC driver uses SET ROWCOUNT on the connection to provide support for Statement.setMaxRows.  That this impacts subqueries as well is a necessary limitation of that design.  The best way to limit the number of rows returned in a result set with SQL Server would be for the application to use a query like SELECT TOP N [...] rather than using Statement.setMaxRows.  The JDBC driver itself cannot use TOP N to support Statement.setMaxRows simply because there is no good way to insert a TOP N clause into an otherwise arbitrary SQL statement or stored procedure call.
    I have filed a bug report against our driver documentation to clarify this limitation in subsequent releases.
    Note that setFetchSize does not limit the maximum number of rows in a result set, so using it would not produce the desired behavior either.  Rather, setFetchSize is a performance hint to the driver about how many rows to fetch from the database at a time when more rows are needed for the result set.
    Hope this helps clarify things.  And thank you for the positive comment on the driver! :-)

    DB:2.38:Javadocs az

    Sorry, my English isnt so good (And i am English!!). When you do javadocs, your stating what the class does, what the methods do etc. In my gui classes, a lot of the methods just creates their own JPanel and places it in the correct location on the JFrame. Do i still document this? What i am trying to say is whether people still document view methods like they would control methods?

    Hello all,

    I'm using version 9.0.3.

    It seems I am not able to browse javadocs for the core JDK classes or for classes in the javax.xml.* packages. Curiously, I am able to view the javadocs for classes in the "javax.servlet.*" packages.

    Thanks.

    DB:2.38:Urlclassloader With "Jar:" Urls 91

    The short form of my question is simply:

    Should URLClassLoader as it comes in JDK 1.3 be able to find and load classes if it's instantiated using URLs of the form "jar:file:myjar.jar!/whatever" (the form described in the JarURLConnection javadocs)? I'm getting a ClassNotFoundException when trying to do a loadClass on a class in a jar that's in another jar using an URLClassLoader instantiated with several URLs of the form mentioned.

    The longer form is this: I'm trying to set up a classloader that acts for a regular java app the way, for example, a servlet container does - allowing classes to be loaded from a jar file that's in a "directory" inside the application .jar file. So I'm getting the application jar's manifest, reading the classpath attribute, and forming the "jar:" URLs for each entry in that classpath attribute. Then I instantiate an URLClassLoader with that array of "jar:" URLs. But when I try to load a class I know is in the "inner" jar file, I'm getting the exception.

    Should this work? I saw a message about problems with compressed jar files, and all the jar files I'm using are uncompressed.

    Thanks,

    Donnie

    Hello everybody,

    I'm trying to run a build.xml file with a project that depends on a link source.
    When I compile the same build with an identical projet with the sources and lib in the project itself (same java files, same packages, same libraries), the compilation and execution work perfectly.

    But in my project with link source, it doesn't recognize the lib (I, of course, changes the path for the source dir and lib dir ) .

    DB:2.35:How To Creat Javadoc With Userdefine Methods jf

    Hi,

    javadoc creates documentation for packages, not for single files - and you have to comment out every class, method, fields in a special form using javadoc tags - an example

    package MyPackage;

    import java.util.Vector;

    /**
    * This class is only an example, how to create javadocs for a package.
    *
    */
    public class MyClass extends Object {

    /**
    * an example for a public field holding a Vector
    *
    */
    public Vector aVector = new Vector(3,3);

    /**
    * Constructs a MyClass instance.
    *
    */
    public MyClass() { super(); }

    /**
    * Constructs a MyClass instance using the passed Vector in the {@link aVector} field.
    *
    * @param vec a Vector, that replaces the Vector in field {@link aVector}
    *
    */
    public MyClass(Vector vec) { super(); aVector = vec; }

    /**
    * gets the Vector in field {@link aVector}.
    *
    * @return a Vector, held in field {@link aVector}
    *
    */
    public Vector getVector() { return aVector; }

    }// end of classNow you can create your javadoc from the classpath with "javadoc MyPackage"

    hope, this helps

    greetings Marsian

    My Jdev documentation preferences show "/C:/jdev9032/jdev/doc/ohj/". I used the browse button to reset this path, exited and reloaded Jdev and still had the same problem.

    The above folder does have all the expected jar files, and I can open them with winzip and see the contents, so they have not been corrupted.

I took a look at the Apache commons logging javadocs, and they do list "getLogger" as a public method of "Log4JLogger". Just to be sure, I checked the javadocs for all releases... Every release since "Logger" superceded "Category" does have this method.I next looked at the "jar-versions.xml" file, supplied with the JBoss distribution. It lists the "implVersion" for "commons-logging.jar" as "1.0.5.GA-jboss" and indicates that this is a patched version from JBoss.I read something elsewhere on the JBoss site indicating that this patch somehow involves dynamic loading of the log4j.jar (or was it log4j.properties?) Maybe someone decided to conveniently eliminate a pesky method, while working on this patch...Is this API change a mistake, or is it intentional? I don't think Apache would be happy to know that JBoss is changing their API! :)Any suggestions on getting around this, besides "don't call that method"? I'm not using .ear files, so it's not easy for me to replace commons-logging.jar just for my application. Javadoc is a very useful java tool to automatically generate documentation for your source code. You have to add some comments to your java source files to document what your methods, variables, and classes do.

    For example, if you wanted to comment a method to add two int values, it would look like this:

    /**
    * Add two numbers.
    * @param a first value to be added.
    * @param b second value to be added.
    * @returns the addition of a and b.
    */
    public int add(int a, int b)
    {
    reutrn a + b;

    Hi all,

    Javadocs within a class are no problem. Very simple way to document your classes

    But how can you create javadocs for the package / project?

    DB:2.30:How Do You Write Javadocs For Package? j3

    See "Package Comment Files" in the document below:
    http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/tools/solaris/javadoc.html

    package-info.java or package.html can be used---there are some differences (e.g., package-info.java can have annotations for the package). The document says that package-info.java is preferred over package.html.

    DB:2.30:Specifying Resources For Downloadservice x9

    Hi

    According to the javadocs for the DownloadService, the loadResource() method - Downloads the given resource, if the resource is mentioned in the JNLP file for the application. This method will block until the download is completed or an exception occurs.

    What does it mean if the reource is mentioned in the jnlp file for the application? I want to download a jar from a different web based application and have that jar be part of my application (ie: plugin a special feature based on some condition). For example, here is a code snippet for both my jnlp file and some code used to load some jar in an app from a context root of foo.

    From an app with a context root of abc.

    jnlp:

    ?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?
    jnlp spec="1.0+" codebase="http://ip:port/abc"
    href="launch.jnlp"

    information
    titleabc title/title
    vendorMe/vendor
    descriptionThis is a description of the something/description
    /information
    resources
    j2se version="1.2+"/
    jar href="abc.jar"/
    /resources
    application-desc main-class="com.abc"/application-desc
    /jnlp

    Now, my code snippet refers to another jar (not listed in the resources of the above jnlp). The jar might even be on another server.

    try
    {
    // determine if a particular resource is cached
    URL url = new URL("http://ip:port/foo/Bar.jar");
    boolean cached = ds.isResourceCached(url, null);
    // remove the resource from the cache
    if (cached) {
    ds.removeResource(url, null);
    }
    // reload the resource into the cache
    DownloadServiceListener dsl = ds.getDefaultProgressWindow();
    ds.loadResource(url, null, dsl);
    }
    catch (Exception e)
    {
    e.printStackTrace();
    }

    This appears to fail (ie: jar is not actually loaded via the service, but the download progress window does appear). If I need to list the resource in my jnlp, how can i do so in such a way that the jar can be physically downloaded from an alternate location?

    Thanks in advance.

    DB:2.30:Specifying Resources For Downloadservice x9

    The codebase address needs to be absolute. This is a bummer, but you can use the Sun JnlpDownloadServlet to dynamically fill this when serving from a J2EE application server. (see http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/docs/downloadservletguide.html)

    If you sign your application and give it all permissions, then you can probably load the required resource without using the jnlp download service.

    The com.beasys.commerce.user.jsp.beans package is only used in the

    best suggestion I can make for now is to search in the directory

    "com.beasys.commerce.user.jsp.beans".

    I have entered an enhancement request to request that this javadoc
