What else should I do to enable the option?

DB:4.04:Select Windows Sharepoint Services Search Server: Grayed Out, Dropdown Disabled pp

    I found this elsewhere...

Through some other searching, I found that I needed to run another command first:
    psconfig.exe -cmd services -install
This allowed me to procede and run the stsadm -o spsearch -action start command to success.
It would be nice if Microsoft included this in their documentation!

The question is, do you need it enabled?
Are you experiencing an issue with search that you think will be resolved by starting the service? Depending on your configuration/farm setup etc, you may not need the service started on all machines.Paul Turner http://redmanta.co.uk/blog Twitter:

I have something that is really bugging me and I am not sure if it is something that I should be worried about or not.Basically I have just build a 3-tier WSS3 infrstructure, within each tier there is 1 x front-end web server and 1 back-end sql server. All tiers are identical in their setup apart from the sql server in the production tier, where the WSS3 databases sit inside the default instance. In DEV and UAT, they sit in named instances. The query I have is, why do I see a different search service within the PRD tier (displayed below)? Do I need to resolve this? How do I resolve this?Farm Topology for PRD Tier:Server                    Services RunningDBSERVERPRD        Windows SharePoint Services DatabaseWEBSERVERPRD      Central Administration                                 Windows SharePoint Services Help Search                              Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail                              Windows SharePoint Services Outgoing E-Mail                              Windows SharePoint Services Web ApplicationFarm Topology for UAT Tier:Server                    Services RunningDBSERVERUAT        Windows SharePoint Services DatabaseWEBSERVERUAT      Central Administration                                 Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail                              Windows SharePoint Services Outgoing E-Mail                              Windows SharePoint Services Search                              Windows SharePoint Services Web ApplicationFarm Topology for DEV Tier:Server                    Services RunningDBSERVERDEV        Windows SharePoint Services DatabaseWEBSERVERDEV      Central Administration                                 Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail                              Windows SharePoint Services Outgoing E-Mail                              Windows SharePoint Services Search                              Windows SharePoint Services Web ApplicationPlease note: I have followed the same procedure when building all 3 tiers, I even flattened the PRD tier and started again, just to double check.Kevin Evans

    DB:3.70:Wss3 Search Query 7z

I sussed out what was causing this difference guys.Basically I had an issue with Search on the PRD Tier. I was also being prompted for a proxy username and password to access the admin site, even though it is a local site.I wasn't sure if the 2 issues were connected or not, but recreating the windows profile for the Setup account on the front-end web server as well as removing and readding the front-end web server as a search server for the content worked a treat.I now see that all tiers are running Windows SharePoint Services Search and not Windows SharePoint Services Help Search.Kevin Evans

Have a look at the SharePoint comparison here http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointtechnology/FX101758691033.aspx.  If the feature you want to look up as a spot under MOSS (Standard and Enterprise) only then its a MOSS feature, otherwise you should be looking in the WSS SDK.

    DB:3.52:Restarting Services sj

Thanks.  I understand we have to re-crawl.  That makes total sense.  The reason I asked the question was we had a crawl get hung up, so we stopped the crawl.  After that, the crawl wouldn't follow the schedule.   We were on the phone with Microsoft support and were told anytime we make a change to the schedule or add a content source, we need to restart the services.  That didn't seem to make any sense.  I was just wondering if anyone else had that experience.

From STSADM try detatching and reattaching the content database to SharePoint.  Sometimes when you move a db it doesn't get the right permissions added initially. The commands would look something like thing:STSADM -o deletecontentdb -url http://URL of web application -databasename name of your dbSTSADM -o addcontentdb -url http://URL of web application -databasename name of your dbHopefully that will rewrite permissions and fix your issue. John

    - Database Server (SERVER_BD) data;
    - Application server (SERVER_APP_A).

But, the application server burned some parts and is unusable.
So, I installed MOSS 2007 SP3 on another server (SERVER_APP_B), and connected the Farm.
    The topology Farm is:
    - SERVER_MAIL
    - SERVER_BD
    - SERVER_APP_A
    - SERVER_APP_B

    The SERVER_APP_A services are running:
    - Central Administration
    - Web Application Windows SharePoint Services
    - Incoming E-Mail Windows SharePoint Services
    - Office SharePoint Server Search
    - Help Search Windows SharePoint Services
    - Load Balancer Service Document Conversions

    The SERVER_APP_B services are running:
    - Central Administration
    - Web Application Windows SharePoint Services
    - Incoming E-Mail Windows SharePoint Services

How do I transfer services (below):

I have the same problem that I am trying to resolve at this minute. I found a post online that stated they were only able to resolve this issue by restoring the Config Database.

I am running WSS 3.0 and I have the same issue. I need to get this resolved because my users are complaining they are getting this errow now: Your search cannot be completed because this site is not assigned to an indexer. Contact your administrator for more
    information

****UPDATE: I thought I would go back and edit this post after resolving the issue several months ago. Afterall, this might help someone else.
If you run into the issue above, you will need to make sure that your content database is configured to use the content search db you specified (or setup). Once you do, the name will actually change from Windows SharePoint Services Help Service to Windows
SharePoint Services Search service, so remember to connect your content databases to your search databases.

I found out my problem.  When I was trying to add another content database through the Central Administration Tool, It would allow me to add the Content database with no error, but whenI tried to connect to it, I would recieve an error message the said connection closed.   What happened was I detached the database from my original server while it was still online.  This kept the database from conecting properly when I reattached the database and eventually tried to access it from SharePoint Services.  What I found was I had to Go into the central administration Tool on the original server and Select my old content database, then I had to make it offline through sharepoint which sets some sort of flag.  Lastly I removed it, Then I was able to detacht, reattacht it the new server and the Sharepoint Administration Tool was able to connect to it with no problems.

I give up on this as well. I have completed all the admin tasks and have all the available services running created an SSP + Web app marked all the associated tasks as complete and that damn message wont go away. My issue is probably in that this installation of MOSS was a re-installation and I ran a restore of a backup job which pushed all the existing data back into the farm and I didn't require to make an SSP and Web application since that was all restored from the backup. What is the relationship between Search Server Express 2008 and WSS3.0?  Does Search Server Express 2008 depend on WSS3.0, or replace it?

I had a server running WSS3.0 that I installed Search Server 2008 Express on several months ago.  I set up Search Server 2008 Express to crawl 3 web applications running on WSS3.0, plus a couple of non-WSS websites and some shared folders.  Everything seemed (and still seems) to be running fine.

I recently noticed some event logs happening everytime the Sharepoint Services Search Refresh timer job ran, and in trying to fix them I stopped the Windows Sharepoint Services Search service from Central Administration - Operations - Services on Server, and started it again.  This eliminated the event logs, but now I'm uncertain if I even need the Windows Sharepoint Services Search service running.  And it changed it's name to Windows Sharepoint Services Help Search, by the way.

In Central Administration - Operations - Services on Server, I have both Office Sharepoint Server Search and Windows Sharepoint Services Help Search running.  Should both be running?  Why?  How are they related?

In Start - Administrative Tools - Services, I have Office SharePoint Server Search started with a startup type of Manual, running under the local account I created for search.  I also have a Windows SharePoint Service Seach started with a startup type of Manual, running under the same account.  Before I stopped and restarted the service in Central Administration as mentioned above, this latter service had a startup type of Disabled.  Are both services required?

This isn't an answer but an indication that you *perhaps* need both.

With that said, does the user appear in Central Admin when you view the sync'd user profiles? If yes, can you delete the user? Make sure to check to see if he is imported again during the next sync. You may also need to delete the user

Please let me know more information in order to do research:

    1.     Is there any other error logged in ULS logs located in “%COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\12\LOGS” and application event viewer?
    2.     You said that Shared services link is disabled; did you mean the link of SSP1 is invalid or you cannot open SSP1?
    3.     The SSP2 services are not starting, is there any error information about SSP2?

Foundation Search will cover all of search until you start Server Search. At that point, Foundation Search only indexes help content. It is up to you if you want to continue to run Foundation Search for this limited purpose.Trevor Seward, MCC

DB:3.10:How Do I Remove A Server From A Farm And Transfer Roles? 88

Hello, Let me start by saying i have very limited experience administering Sharepoint. Everything was already set up when i started at this company and i've only dealt with maintaining the current setup. I would like to remove the app server from the Sharepoint farm and switch it's rolls to the web server. I do not believe we need three different servers to run the small intranet page that is in place and the extra hardware could be put to better use elsewhere. We are using SharePoint Server 2007 and the current setup is below. Is this process as easy as stopping the services on the app server and starting them on the web server, then uninstalling SharePoint from the app server? If anyone has any advice or links to a guide or something it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

OK, After spending some time on the internet I believe our Web server was most likely installed as a Web Front End server. Is it possible to modify the installation to include the rest of the components from the complete install? I can't find any information on this. If not, it looks like I will have to reinstall moss 2007 with the complete option. With my current setup, do you think it would be possible to move all services to the APP server, reinstall moss 2007 on the Web server, then move all services over to the new Web server, and remove the APP server? This sharepoint farm also does not have any of the service packs installed. It is on revision 12.0.0.4518? Would it be a good idea to install sp2 before I mess with this?

    DB:3.09:Adding Server To A Farm 18

    Good day,
I want to add a new server to my existingMOSS 2007 farm. I've followed some of the articles on how to do it. Installed it as complete. When the wizard started I gave the remote
server (Sql2005). Now curiously, it came back with 3 databases that seemed random. This is test environment so the db I chose was WSS_Content_Test, wich is what the current wss runs on. After picking that db the domain account was filed in the account field.
The account is a domain account called xxxxSharePoint. I used this account to installed the whole thing, it is an administrator account that has also db admin rights including db create, db read, etc.
So when the wizard started I gave it the database, this domain account and password, selected the option not to install the central admin page. Then the wizard continued to perform
10 steps only to fail on the 2nd with a message of denied access. The logs on both serversrevealed that another domain account is trying to access the database and its credentials weren't adequate. I don't where this other account comes into play.
Never the less I rerun the wizard, but this time only 8 steps were about to run and they ram successfully.
When I accessed the Central Admin page, which was the original server's admin page, the new server was listed with the status Not Configured.
All of the listed services were stopped (Document Conversions Launcher Service, Document Conversions Load Balancer Service, Excel Calculation Services, Office SharePoint Server
Search, Windows SharePoint Services Search, and Windows SharePoint Services Web Application). I only need the Windows SharePoint Services Web Application, which is listed as running on the original server and when I clicked Start, the status remains in Starting
    status as are several others.
I checked the services on my new servers and discovered that the following services were disabled

    -Office Document Conversions Launcher Service
-Office Document Conversions Load Balancer Service
    -Office SharePoint Server Search
    -Windows SharePoint Services Search,
enabling them did not help with the status as they remained in wither stopped or starting.
I am lost as to where to go from here. I don't know why the WSS is forcing the other domain account in to play, and where do I need change this service account setting. Now of the
various different service accounts that are need, we made is simple by creating one account, which is the one I described above.
I know I described a whole lot of different issues here, but hoping some can help me out. Thanks,
    EJM

    Hi,

    Hi,

You may try to change the password in ADUC for the SharePoint services and use the SharePoint Central Administration Console to set the password for
the spfarm user to the same password set in ADUC. Run the command stsadm -o registerwsswriter to add the Sharepoint Foundation to Windows Server Backup.

This is how I disabled it.

When I ran the Microsoft Fix IT tool, it said that the Search Protocol was damaged.

    How do I fix this?

Disabling the Search Indexing Feature in Windows 7

Right Click the “Computer” Icon in the desktop and select “Manage”.Click “Services and Applications” in the “Computer Management” window.Click on “Services”. You can see a lot of services listed there. Look for “Windows Search” in that.Right Click on “Windows Search” from the list and choose “Properties”.The “Windows Search Properties Window” will open up. From “Startup type” click on the drop down menu and choose “Disabled”.Click “Apply” then “OK” and that’s it. The Windows 7 Search Indexing Feature is now disabled.

    Hi,
Run SFC /scannow and checkdisk and then rebuild the index.

Do these to clear corruption and repair/replace damaged/missing system files.

    ------------------------------------

This and the McAfee comment are just in case those come into play as you try to fix this.

One thing that seems to be affecting many is the ACHIVE bit has been set on some files that
Index can't set and Search can't find. So the ATTRIB-A *.* /S which means the archive bit
is REMOVED for the Parent (top) folder/directory files and for those in all sub-folders/sub-
    directories.

    ===============================================

Another problem seems to be McAfee and some other antivirus programs are interferring with the
Index and/or Search functions. McAfee would have to be uninstalled using the Uninstall routine in
Windows AND the McAfee removal too to be sure no remnants are left. (Possibly other antivirus
programs are also causing this error.) Of course you would want to switch to another antivirus
such as MSE (Microsoft Essentials), Avast or others.

If you're not seeing the Help documentation when you click the Help icon, then that's a different problem unrelated to the search service we're talking about. That service just allows you to search the the Help documentation, if you're not seeing it in the
popup window when you click the icon, that's a completely different problem.
Off the top of my head I don't know how to solve that, if that is indeed what you're dealing with, let me know and I'll try to do some research about how to get that set up.

Hi, when you are making any Diagnostic logging changes then that should be applicable for all the servers in the farm.
So either the server is not added in the farm or the path where log files should be created is mentioned in CA is different than the path where you are looking for the changes in that server.

Lambert, Thanks for you reply. Question #1, makes sense, and I will stop the search services on the front-end servers (WSSFE01 WSSFE02). Question #2, I am using WSS 3.0, and there are index files on the back-end server (WSSBE01) since all content databases point to this server. Index files can be found C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Data\Applications\{GUI}\Projects\Search\Indexer\CiFiles and they are updated every time the scheduled crawl runs. Per the link below... http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288477.aspx Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 uses the SharePoint search technology used by Office SharePoint Server 2007, rather than relying on Microsoft SQL Server full-text searching as previous versions of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services did. I might be misunderstanding the comment above, but if so, what's the role of the index files here? Do all searches hit the back-end search database to pull results? If so, I don't find any relevant table holding crawled/indexed content, do you? ...AlexAlex W. Caldas

I'm really getting more and more mad and frustrated and I'm wasting much to much timeconfiguering this damn Sharepoint Server, while my priority should beWORKING with the sharepoint site. I did the Installation using the domain accounts (I didn't
knew by the the time I created the accounts in AD that MOSS had died) MOSS_Farm, MOSS_Search, MOSS_Services, MOSS_SQL, MOSS_Admin, where MOSS_Farm and MOSS_Admin are in the local ADmin group. The installation was successful, but the cleaning up of errors
brought up in the Server Manager or in Health Analyzer just does not seem to ever come to an end. I have a Simple Farm with everything including SQL Server running on one Server withWindows Server 2008 R2.
There is a limited number of services involved in Sharepoint, I can't understand why there aren't precise instructions to have them assigned to a precise number of service accounts, using exactly the 2 spots that seem to me the one to adjust the whole thing
(please tell me if I'm wrong) which is:
    - Services
    - Central Administration/Security/configure Service Accounts
    - a 3rd spot to assign Service Accounts could be considered the Installation itself (question: are the assignments made there reversible using the other 2 spots?)
The Credential Managment has these Services to assign to (in brackets the service the service Account that is assigned to to now):

    Thanks Xue-Mei,
I do agree with Martin. I just run the PowerPivot Setup wizard with all the settings validated, but for a reason it incorrectly sets the accounts for the services and I get plenty of errors in the Heath analyser. So if even the developers of Microsoft get
lost in the account stuff it is time to put a light on it don't you think?
The document describes that. But what is a bit frustrating is that it seems to be written for another SharePoint version. None of the services Martin mentioned and I see also in SharePoint are listed in the document.
May be Microsoft can revise the document for SharePoint 2010?

Based on your server requirement and business need. It is not possible to tell you about every service and job and when to start them. Check below technet article to know more about timer job and their role in SP 2010 so based on your need you can enable/disable

Hi all, I installed WSS 3.0 after MOSS 2007 installig. When I go to services on server I can't see Windows SharePoint Services Search to start it. What should I do? I have Office SharePoint Server Search and start it.

    DB:3.01:Windows Sharepoint Services Search sm

Going from memory, it's an option in MOSS 2007 which (again from memory!) means you need to start it if you want it. You don't really need it because the Windows SharePoint Services Search on MOSS 2007 only indexes the Help files. (The equivalent search in WSS 3.0 indexes both the help files and the data stored in WSS 3.0)Leaving it here in Setup/Admin as we are still in the installation phase.WSS FAQ sites: http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com and http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com

The SharePoint Foundation Search V4 service keeps getting disabled. I do not know at this point as to why. It had been turned on fine. Here is what I am doing.

In Central Administration, go to System Settings-Services on Server.Select the SharePoint Foundation Search service and click StartEnter and/or confirm the settings on the Search service page (service account, username, password)Press Start to start the service I am at a loss.

Hi, I am using MOSS 2007. we have following servers with the respective services running on them. previously search was working fine. Production Servers: 1) MOSS01 ( Index Server/Application Server) Services : CA, Windows SharePoint Services Incoming Email, Windows SharePoint Services Web Application 2) MOSS02 (Query Server) Services : Office SharePoint Server Search, Windows SharePoint Services Web Application DR Servers: 1) MOSSDR03 ( Query Server ) Services : Office SharePoint Server Search, Windows SharePoint Services Web Application 2) MOSSDR04 ( Application Server ) Services : CA, Windows SharePoint Services Help Search, Windows SharePoint Services Web Application Last week I noticed that search is not working for SharePoint Sites. I followed below blog of PDesai on production servers only but it didn't help (should I apply on DR servers as well?). http://blogs.msdn.com/pdesai/archive/2007/09/27/moss-2007-search-scope-error-query-index-server-event-log-error-how-to-fix-it.aspx After applying the steps from blog, some contents are available in the search. we have some infopath forms stored in the library. So when I try to search any document from this library by selecting it's metadata property, it is only displaying the names of respective documents.( It should display all the columns but it is not). Also if I click on the document it is giving me an error. is it because of the improper crawling? I am getting the below errors in the event viewer, 1) MOSS01 : 6398, 5553,7888 (every hour) 2) MOSS02 : 6482 ( every minute ) Also on Search Administration in CA, under propogation status, it is giving error Query Server is not responding . Also I have stopped Crawling 2 days back from Content Sources drop down option and still it is showing stopping status. I would really appreciate any help on this. Thanks, Sam.

DB:3.01:Moss Search Is Not Working 3a

Hi Sam,I dont see anything that would prevent it. what if we clear the index and recrawl.I hope to something.I LOVE MS.....

    THXJohn Lenz

    DB:3.01:Outlook 2007 Close But Outlook.Exe Still Running c7

    Hi John,
This issue occurs when a program that is running as an add-in inside Outlook cannot close. Outlook waits for this program to close before Outlook can close.
To determine which add-in is preventing Outlook from closing, follow these steps:

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the
Other tab. Click Advanced Options, and then click COM Add-ins.
If COM add-ins are listed, note them, and then click to clear the check box that is next to one add-in. Click
    OK.

If no COM add-ins are listed, go to step 6. Exit Outlook, restart it, and then exit it again. Then verify whether the application closes correctly. To do this, examine the notification area to see whether the Outlook icon stays there for a long time. Alternatively, look in Task Manager for instances
of Outlook.exe after the Outlook window closes.

Note In Task Manager, Outlook.exe is found in the list on the
Processes tab. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to continue disabling COM add-ins until Outlook closes correctly.
If no COM add-ins are listed, click Cancel to close the
COM Add-ins window. Click Add-in Manager on the Advanced Options window.
Verify that only the default add-ins that are listed in the More Information section are in the list. If non-default add-ins are present, note them, and then click to clear the check box next to each non-default add-in. This action disables the add-in.

Note If there are several non-default add-ins in Add-in Manager, disable them all at the same time.

After all add-ins have been disabled, and after Outlook is restarted and closes correctly, enable each non-default add-in one at a time. To do this, exit Outlook, restart Outlook, enable an add-in, and then exit Outlook again.

This procedure may help identify which add-in is not working correctly with Outlook. After you identify the add-in, contact the add-in's manufacturer. A fix for the problem may already be available. Alternatively, the manufacturer may be able to build a fix.

    Hope that helps.

DB:3.00:What Services Should Be Running? ks

Not sure how many servers are in your farm, but I will assume you just have one web server.  Click the Custom radio button above the service list to see all services you can run from the server.

The first two deal with the document conversion service and are only needed if you support other languages.  The Windows SharePoint Services Search is actually the service that indexes your help files, but I don't believe you have to run this (even though it does say required).  However without it I don't think you would be able to search the builtin help.  There really isn't a reason to not run it so I would start and configure it, but that is up to you.

One thing to note is once you install SP1 this will be renamed as Windows SharePoint Services Help Search which better describes this service.

    Kale

    Dear all,
I wondered if someone can help me please, I recently made the mistake of attempting to install the Office Web Apps on a Small Business Server 2011 installation. This failed and I later found out that this is only supported with the Premium Add-on and
second server. I successfully managed to uninstall the Office Web Apps and reconfigure my SharePoint Farm to its previous state. However, now my SharePoint Foundation Search and SharePoint Search Server 14 automatically disable themselves after
a couple of hours it seems.
I can change both services to Automatic or manual and restart the services, once done the search works with no errors. My Crawl logs are all showing successful on content sources, but each day the services revert to a disabled state.
Prior to installing/Uninstalling the Office Web Apps I had no issues with Server Server 14 which I installed successfully ontop of SharePoint Foundation 2010.

DB:3.00:Sharepoint Foundation Search Sharepoint Search Server 14 Services Disabled Automatically Daily. 1j

Why are you trying to run foundation search and Search server services at the same time? Usually I leave foundation disabled. I'm guessing that they might be canceling eachother out some how when a time service runs every few hours. Try
leaving foundation turned off (would be my guess).

In our case, when you do a search the url contains a reference to the source site. There's a parameter in there which says u=https%3A%2F%2Fsomething%2F .

Try changing this parameter by hand to u=http%3A%2F%2Fsomething%2F . and see if it works.

If it does, use a javascript webpart to rewrite the url and redirect users. It's a known issue.

This is strange behavior that is documented. When the search service has been stopped it is labeled Windows SharePoint Services Search. Once you start it, it is renamed to Windows SharePoint Services Help Search. They are one and the same. http://justindevine.wordpress.com/page/3/

And ¿why is not working with the new name? I think the name is not the problem here. ¿What about the office search service? I cant see it and I dont know how to set up. ¿Can be that the service we need to search instead of the help search service?

    DB:2.95:Event 70, Sharepoint Foundation Search 8a

I have SBS 2011. SharePoint was disabled because we are not using it. Due to constant warnings and errors in eventlog I decided to turn on sharepoint and just leave it. Some errors still remain. SharePoint version is 14.0.7106.5002 (SP2 I guess?). I noticed
that database status for WSS_Search_server [Type: SPSearchDatabase] is Database is too old and upgrade is required. I google arround and can't find any solution. How can I upgrade this database?
[UPDATE] Googling arround I noticed that there must be some search service related to search database. I checked sharepint admin. central and under services I see only two: app. discovery and security token service. I must say that we don't use and
never used sharepoint - just want to get rid of event errors/warnings regarding sharepoint. So, should there be search service? is this database obsolete? [END OF UPDATE]
    Regards,
    Peter

Thank you for your reply. My mistake, I forgot to say that I already tried all updates.
I read all the articles, I ran psconfig to update and update was successful, but database in question still remains too old and upgrade is required.
So, what is going on with this database? I am not sharepoint user so I know nothing about sharepoint databases. I just want to eliminate event log errors - this one comes up often.
How do I find more details about this database and what is going on with it? maybe manually update it?
    Regards,
    Peter

Sharepoint and Database hosted in the same server
The below services are also running under the farm administrator account
    Office SharePoint Server Search
    Windows SharePoint Services Search
    Windows SharePoint Services Timer
If i want to change the farm administrator 's password what is the procedure do i need to follow ? .

I went through the below article from Microsoft but why do we need to follow the article to just change the password

You are following the proper procedure. You need to follow it because the account's password information is stored in SharePoint's configuration database as well as Active Directory and you need to update it in both locations.JD Wade

I have a Search Service Account and a Content Access Account anda 3-server farm (WFE, 2 APPs).

Each server lists the following Windows services related to search:

SharePoint Server Search 14SharePoint Foundation Search v4
My question is which account(s) should be used for each service?

SharePoint Server Search 14 - SEARCH SERVICE ACCOUNT?SharePoint Foundation Search v4 - LOCAL SYSTEM?
    Thanks in advance!- Rick

DB:2.95:Search Accounts For Windows Services 71

The SharePoint foundation search is only used for indexing the help documentation if you have SharePoint Server Search running. Depending on your requirements, you can disable the SharePoint Foundation Search as long as the Server Search is working as expected.
If you are required to run both, just make sure the account being used for foundation search can index the help content which teh Local System should be able to do.
If you are looking at it from a best practices point of view, a domain account is better as you can assign specific permissions to any needed content sources. Thanks, James Waymire - Senior Software Architect for SharePoint - ExtraTeam

DB:2.95:Office Search Server And Wss Search Server Working Together On The Server Farm 11

    Hi,
We wanted to have the Office search server and WSS search server working together on the server farm we have created. WSS search was working fine until we had not set-up the office search server 2008 express, but after we installed the search server, and got it configured, the site specific search web-part in our WSS(which we tipically use to provide the user an option to search within the site) has stopped yielding any results.
Moreover we do not see the Windows SharePoint services search service lists on two of the servers in the farm. The third one shows the service but is shown as stopped and has a message Service running on: Name of server 1
The server 1 is currently running only the following 4 services:1. Office Sharepoint Server Search2. Windows Sharepoint Services Help Search and3. Windows Sharepoint Services Web Application.
Now the question is:1.  Can WSS Search service co-exist with Office Sharepoint Server Search service (OSS 2008 express)2.  Why don't i see the Windows SharePoint services search on the server 1 and server 2.3.  Is Windows Sharepoint Services Help Search same as Windows Sharepoint Services Search if yes then why is the site specific search not yielding any results.4.  Why is Server 2 not showing the same status as server 3
Any help from anybody out there would be highly appriciated

DB:2.95:Office Search Server And Wss Search Server Working Together On The Server Farm 11

WSS Search for Help is only installed on a single server usually the app server role. Yes, they can coexist when you install MOSS the role of WSS Search changes to just searching the help file... -IvanIvan Sanders

DB:2.94:What Service Accounts To Use For What Services For Sharepoint 2010? c7

    Hello,

Can I use the same service account for both applications pools for the main site and the “my site” site? Or, should there be separate accounts for each application pool?

Is there a resource available that describes what accounts to use for what service/application used by SharePoint?

Service Application Pool - Security Token Service Application Pool
Service Application Pool - SharePoint Web Services Default
Service Application Pool - SharePoint Web Services System
Windows Service - Claims to Windows Token Service
Windows Service - Document Conversion Launcher Services
Windows Service - Document conversion Load Balancer Service
Windows Service - Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Sandbox Code Service
Windows Service - SharePoint Foundation Search
Windows Service - SharePoint Server Search
Windows Service - User Profile Synchronization Service =Farm Administrator account

Windows Service - Web Analytics Data Process Service
    NT Services
SharePoint 2010 Administration = Local System account
SharePoint 2010 Timer = Farm Administrator account
SharePoint 2010 Tracing = Local Service account
SharePoint 2010 VSS Writer = Local System account
SharePoint Foundation Search 14 = Search account
SharePoint Server Search 14 = Search account

DB:2.94:What Service Accounts To Use For What Services For Sharepoint 2010? c7

Basically it comes down to your security requirements. You could use the same account for everything in SharePoint, but this would be the least secure. You could also use a different account for each element, much more secure. Most organizations are fine
somewhere in the middle. You need to analyze your security needs and build accordingly.Imagine what we could be...if we could just imagine. | Daniel A. Galant | Sr. SharePoint Solutions Architect EPC Group.net

Hi I am kind of stuck with the Sharepoint search. I have enabled Office SharePoint Server Search and Windows SharePoint Services Help Search on the central administrator and also enabled Sharepoint search feature using the Sitecollections features and also started the Indexing services from Add remove programs. My problem is no matter what i search for, the results are NO MATCH FOUND... This is my first time doing something about search. Can you please suggest me if there is anything else i need to setup to make the Search return some resultsThanks
