Maybe if this problem exist since a couple of days and several reboots were in between, I can safely ignore the possibility that one more flush of the DNS Cache could fix this problem

Anyone know of good cache only dns servers?
I was fiddling around with dproxy and maradns. I put both of them in the aur.
dproxy seems a bit simplistic for my needs. It works great caching A records, but it doesnt cache MX records.

I havent tested maradns yet, just made a package.

I know I can use bind, but ick!
I generally dont like djbs stuff either. I dont want to add daemonutils just to use dns-cache either. *shrug*

Anyway..any of you archers know of other good caching dns servers?

thanks for the info...i will give it a shot.
I took colnagos advice, and installed djbdns, and was just using dnscache. (for about a day)
I think I will try dnsmasq though, as it seems simpler, and doesnt rely on other packages (like daemonutils).

I am using a CE-560 with ACNS 5.0.1 software. I have configured the DNS caching option with the following commands:

dns listen a.b.c.d port 53 hostname dnscache

    dns pin both dnscache a.b.c.d

    dns serial-lookup

    dns max-cache-memory 10

    dns enable

The problem is that after a certain amount of time the server would crash or stop answering DNS requests. One time it completely stopped answering and another time just for certain sites. I then relaized that a.b.c.d already had a DNS name and that the dns pin command may be conflicting. I changed the config to:

    dns listen a.b.c.d port 53 hostname fqdn.com

    dns serial-lookup

    dns max-cache-memory 512

    dns enable

So far so good, but I reconfigured it only 10 minutes ago. I deployed the DNS server this morning and by lunch it had crashed twice. I do not know what the problem is, but I have 3 ideas.

    1. The DNS name conflicted with the dns pin command and confused the box.

    2. The DNS cache was too small, I since raised it to the maximum.

    3. The DNS service provided by Cisco is not stable.

I am leaning towards number 1. I think that the cache would just delete old entries as it approaches it maximum size and I do not believe that Cisco would deploy an unstable product.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    DB:4.06:Dns Server Cache Size 7j

If you run dnscmd /exportsettings, then look in the system32\dns folder for a file named DnsSettings.txt, then open it and look at the MaxCacheSize setting, you can see it's set to 0. This means there is no limit.
Are you trying to set a limit? I'm curious what you've read, if anything, about the setting that would want to set a limit or change it?
Is it a security concern? If a security concern, at least you have Windows 2008 R2, which has the DNS Cache Locking feature to prevent unauthorized access and users from altering the cached records. No need to modify anything. By default it's set to 100%
    to not allow any changes.

actually i want to explore terminology (read cache) what you say abt universal group member caching is read just or write ? what abt RODC dns ?

    Hi,

When you promote a Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC) and also select it to be a DNS server, it will perform inbound replication of the DNS Zones (Either stored in the applications or domain NCs) as any Writeable Domain Controller. But if you're familiar with
RODC basics you know they never perform outbound replication and the database is mostly read-only (including the DNS records), Windows Server 2008 DNS Introduce a new zone type called the
Primary Read-Only Zone. The Administrator of RODC can view contents of DNS but will unable to change it from a RODC.

    Reference link:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4031.how-read-only-domain-controllers-and-dns-works.aspx
See below link for RODC FQA and other querys:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772234(v=ws.10).aspx.
Regarding the universal group member caching see this:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff797984.aspx

DB:3.79:Cache Only Dns Server On Server 2008 R2 Dc ac

    hi there.
I'm trying to find out if I can add a cache only DNS server on my 2008 R2 domain controller.
The gotcha is that I do not use AD integrated DNS for the primary DNS and Secondary DNS servers.
I would prefer not to support another server at this branch location for a cache only DNS server.

thanks for any advice you have. CT

DB:3.79:Cache Only Dns Server On Server 2008 R2 Dc ac

Keep in mind, as soon as you promote a machine to a DC, and you have DNS installed, whatever zones that are already AD integrated on other DCs in the same replication scope, will automatically become available on that DC.
If you want a purely caching only DNS server and not host any zones, simply install DNS on a member server or standalone server, so none of the aD integrated zones show up.
    .

my concern: if I set up DNS on the DC that I have at the new building, it will become AD integrated....correct?

Actually, a ZONE can be AD integrated, not the DC itself.
    .
If you're going to put a DC in a remote location, then why worry if the zone is on the DC or not? Matter of fact, you would rather have the AD zone, assuming you are speaking of the actual AD DNS domain name, available so the clients do not perform queries
    across the WAN link.
    .

DB:3.78:Dns Look Up On A Computer, Local Host File/Local Dns Cache. 1d

    Hi everybody.

I hope everyone is doing fine.

Does a pc have a local host file and local dns cache and they both are two distinct entities ? Or both  these names refers to same thing?

When our computer tries to resolve a domain name to ip, what does it check first local host file or local dns cache? ( Here i am assuming both are different places on a local computer which could be wrong ).

Thanks and have a great day.

DB:3.78:Dns Cach In The Dns Client And In The Dns Server pp

    Hello,
I am studying dns deeper , and ran into a question:
The DNS client has its own cache, as well as the DNS server, so I was wondering where the dns client looks first for www.unknowdomain.com , in its
    local cache or in the
    DNS server's cache ?.
    Thanks in advance!

Luis Olías Técnico/Admon Sistemas . Sevilla (España - Spain)

DB:3.78:Dns Cach In The Dns Client And In The Dns Server pp

    Hi,
We may divide the DNS query process into 3 parts:
    1.DNS client.
    2.DNS client to DNS server.
3.DNS server to other DNS server.
The name “www.unknowdomain.com” first is submitted to DNS client. Client try to uses local DNS cache to resolve the name, the local DNS cache including DNS cache and hosts file. If the client can’t resolve the name with local cache, it will contact
DNS server according to its related DNS settings, and transmits the query to DNS server. Once the DNS server obtain the query, it first checks the zone. If no zone information exists for the queried name, then checks its cache. If the queried name does not
find a matched answer either from its cache or zone information, then other DNS server will be needed to help to resolve the name, detailed process depends on your DNS architecture.

Detailed information about DNS query, you may reference the link below:
    How DNS query works:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc775637(v=WS.10).aspx

    DB:3.78:Dns Cache Poisoning Attacks 87

I use ESET NOD 32 for my virus/firewall protection.

I have been receiving DNS Cache Poisoning Attacks on the Comcast DNS server IP addresses 75.75.75.75:54 and 75.75.76.76:53. The attacks are hitting any number of different ports on my NAT networked computer.

I thought Comcast had corrected these attacks. Any assistance available.

    DB:3.78:Dns Cache Poisoning Attacks 87

I too am using ESET Smart Security, though it is 5.2.9.1 version and get the same IPs giving ESET triggering DNS attack blocking. I have a Cisco E4200 router so I can use my tablet, which uses Android and Kaspersky and does not register attacks, but does not check tradiitonally for DNS poisoning either.

These attacks are sporadic and appeared to be access-determined, if I try to go to one site too often I get ESET triggering, same site infrequently accessed gets no poisoning report. I have gotten attacks across 3-4 subversions of ESET Smart Security. I have used computers since 1968, and will check with ESET tech support about the DNS Attack triggering.

BTW, Cisco E series uses a Linux derivative internally to router, if that triggers any memory I have no way to malware scan the router, but suspect strongly that if router was infected it would have much more of networking issues. Router has run two versions of firmware and ESET has triggered on DNS attack reporting diuring the both versions usage. I got the E4200 becasue it was on Comcast's recommended list for small business and thus more secureable than a home-grade router, NOT because I have a business (no business here).

Mom is Comcast account holder, I am the one with computer knowledge and handle internet setup and admin here.

    Hi scoutxlt,

    Hi Cardsfan70,

Thanks for using the Vista Answers Forum.

What type of internet connection do you have (DSL, cable, etc.)?

If you’re getting an error that says that after trying to diagnose a connection issue, I suggest turning off your firewall software temporarily to see if it's causing the issue.

You may also want to check your router setting with your ISP.
The router is usually the device that contacts the DNS, and makes it available to the computers on the network.

Give that a try and let us know how it works out.

Try using a commandshell like the one found here: http://windowsmobilepro.blogspot.com/2006/05/pocket-pc-console-for-standard-input.html

See if you can type ipconfig /flushdns and watch happens.

On the primary, add your secondary\'s IP to the allow-transfer statement

    in named.conf.options.

    Also add another line

    also-notify { 111.111.111.111; };

to the zone declaration using the local\'s IP.

This will notify your local secondary of changes in the primary zone and

give it the ability of doing a zone transfer.

On your local server, add your zone as a secondary one, configuring the

Yeah you are right that current CLI commands do not provide that information. I'm not sure if dnsmasq (the software providing the DNS forwarding function) provides this information, but if there is a way to get it from dnsmasq, you can try doing that directly from the CLI shell.

As the advisory says, IronPort is not vulnerable to this problem. However if you are using an upstream DNS server (rather than using the "root servers") and that upstream server (or it's upstream, etc) is vulnerable to this problem then it's still possible for your IronPort receive invalid data.So please, if you're using an upstream DNS server please check with your ISP or whoever provides it to make sure that they are taking the relevant precautions to make sure they are not are vulnerable to this problem. You can do a basic test to check if your upstream servers are vulnerable by running the following from your IronPort :myironport nslookup porttest.dns-oarc.net txtTXT="63.251.57.82 is GOOD: 26 queries in 155.3 seconds from 26 ports with std dev 14911.47"TTL=30mIf you get a POOR or FAIR then it means you've got a problem. If you get a GOOD it means that the last DNS server in the chain is OK, but any in the middle could still be vulnerable.

    DB:3.52:Dns Cache Poisoning Signature jk

From our research on the subject, we do not believe a high-fidelity signature can be created to detect this attack. The nature of the traffic used in the attack is legitimate and as a successful attack requires some guess-work and timing, there are too many variables to detect any sort of pattern in the traffic used. The initial part of the attack occurs when a user accesses a malicious link. Standard user training should mitigate this vector if users avoid accessing unsolicited links. Updates are also available to patch systems. For more information, please see Intellishield alert number 13831:
