How can I create a database, connect to the newly created databse and rename the created databese in Oracle 8i from a Java application using oracle thin driver ?

    DB:3.58:Jdbc - Create Database In Oracle 38

Oracle does not have "databases" you either create a new instance in such cases (rarely) or a new user. I'm pretty sure that you cannot create a new instance from JDBC. But you could actually create a new user if you are connected with the right account.

There is no way of renaming a user. I suggest you read the Oracle documentation in order to understand Oracle's concept of Databases/Schema/users

DB:3.44:How To Create A Oracle Database Using Java Program ? mk

Is it possible to create a oracle 8i database using a java program. In general no.

You can use Runtime.exec() or JNI to directly access Oracle tools to create it.

Or, it can be done (I think) using an existing database and existing db user who has permission to create the database. If it can be done there will be some stored procs to facilitate the process.

It's just like big oracle. We use sqlplus for most of our work
since that allows us to put the schema and control data
under source code control. Here's a sample entry from a
    makefile:

    $(CODEBASE)\ObjectStore.odb: LoadSchema.sql
    -removedb CallNetDataSource objectstore

    plus80 system/watral@odbc:CallNetDataSource:objectstore

export/import aren't backward compatible. For example, there may be new/changed datatypes with the higher version that the lower version won't understand.
You will need to use "imp" from version 9 connecting to your 8i database, but first run the catexp.sql script from the 9i ~/rdbms/admin.

Yes. The Jdeveloper Technology Preview 3's default jdbc driver does not support Oracle 8i.

Can anybody tell me how to export tables from Oracle 9i database to Oracle 8i database?

DB:3.21:How To Export Tables From 9i To 8i ms

In your 8.1.7 ORACLE_HOME you need a tnsname that points to the 9.2.0 instance. You can use a tool like Net8 Assistant to create this. Then you have to include the tnsname in your connect string to do the export, either on the command line or in your export parameter file.

    Examples:
    Command line:

    exp system/manager@remotedb

    Parameter file:

    userid=system/manager@remotedb

Remotedb would be the tnsname you created with Net8 Assistant.

Also the listener must be running and configured for connections to the 8.1.7 instance for this to work.

We plan to use Oracle 10g , but untill now we use Oracle 8i 8.1.7.4.1 .

I want to know how to import all of our Oracle 8i objects stuff to the new Oracle 10g database ; and should I create tablespaces or can I import simply the Oracle 8i tablespaces.

    Thank you very much indeed

Are you attempting to Upgrade an 8i database to 10g? If so the Upgrade Guide would be the place to start.

DB:3.20:Deployment Of Ejb In Oracle 8i Database Server xa

Yes you can, but if I recall correctly, the Oracle 8i database supports session beans only, not entity beans.

Have you looked at Oracle's J2EE container for 9i? This is a separately downloadable component that provides full support for JSP/Servlet, EJB (BMP and CMP) and JMS. I don't know what the licensing restrictions are on using it (I don't how many thousands of dollars you must have already spent with Oracle) but it's definitely a lot easier and more convenient than deployment to the database, as well as being more functional.

    DB:3.14:Vs2008, Win7, Oracle8i pp

I'm not sure if it helps at all, but if you can get a 10g client working in Win7, then you can probably get it working with Server Explorer in 2008. You'll have to use the OLEDB driver for an Oracle Database connection, and make sure the connection name can be resolved (test with tnsping using Visual Studio 2008 command prompt.)

I'm running Windows XP, VS 2008, and hitting an Oracle 8i database. I'm able to browse tables and manipulate data, but that's really about it. I was running Win7 before, but ran into issues with ODT/10g in general, so I downgraded my OS.

Due to cost constraints, we have had to downgrade our 8i Database Enterprise Edition installation to Standard Edition.

My question is: do we have to re-create our database under Standard Edition, to make it a 'Standard Edition' database, or can we just re-open our existing database (created under Enterprise Edition) with the Standard Edition?

I installed 8i SE and opened our database but, of course, SELECT BANNER FROM V$VERSION suggests we're still running the EE.

Are we breaking the terms of our licence by using this existing database?

    Hi,

Yes it is supported and it works fine but there is a known bug.

If your 8i database is 8.1.6 and if you have a table with a LONG column in that database you won't be able to create a view in your 9i database that will access the LONG column of the 8.1.6 table. If you do that you will get an ORA-00600.

    DB:3.06:Create New Database f3

hello, i am new user for using the oracle 8i can somebody tell me how to create a new database once i had login into SQL PLUS which is before i starting to create a scheme and table. tahnks for help.

    Yoong

    DB:3.06:Create New Database f3

hELLO, i HOPE THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT?

Creating a Database with DBCA in Oracle 8i

Creating a Database with DBCA (Step 1)

To start the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant, choose:

Start Programs Oracle - HOME-NAME Database Administration Database Configuration Assistant

The DBCA's wizard begins by welcoming you to the utility. This step allows you to create, configure, or delete a database. You are prompted to select a procedure that you would like the DBCA to perform. Your choices are:

    Create a database

    Delete a database

Select Create a database, then click Next.

Creating a Database with DBCA (Step 2)

After selecting Create a database, the wizard prompts you to select the type of database to create. Your choices are:

    Typical (recommended)

    Custom

The Typical option creates a database with minimal user input. It will automatically create a pre-configured multi-purpose database with the default initialization parameter settings.

The Custom option guides you in the creation of a customized database. You will be prompted to allocate file settings and destinations, extent sizes, memory parameters, and character set values. Ideally, the Custom option is for individuals experienced in database creation procedures.

    Select Typical, then click Next.

Creating a Database with DBCA (Step 3)

The DBCA wizard prompts you to select the method for creating your database. Your choices are:

Copy existing files from the CD

    Create new database files

The fastest process is to copy existing files from the CD. The CD used during Oracle's initial install is the suitable choice. The database's required options and components are configured with no user input necessary.

The DBCA will prompt you to answer several questions if you were to select the Create new database files method. You will be asked what type of environment and the number of concurrent users. This option takes a bit longer than copying the files from a CD.

Select Copy existing files from the CD, insert Oracle's install CD into the CD-ROM drive, then click Next.

Creating a Database with DBCA (Step 4)

The next step is to name your database. You need to establish a Global Database Name which allows Oracle to uniquely identify the database. The standard naming format is "name.domain" where "name" is the database name and "domain" is the network in which the database is located. The database created in this course will be stored locally on the C: drive, and the Global Database Name will be projemp.local.

The "name" portion of the Global Database Name cannot be more than eight characters and can contain alphabetic and numeric characters. The network domain is what makes the Global Database Name unique. The "domain" portion cannot be more than 128 characters and can contain alpha, numeric, and the period (.) characters.

Also, you need to identify an Oracle System Identifier (SID). The SID identifies the database from other databases on the same computer. Luckily, as you enter the Global Database Name, the DBCA automatically takes the value you entered for the database name. This identifier should match your Global Database Name to avoid confusion with other identifiers; however, you do have the opportunity to change it. The SID can contain up to 64 alphanumeric characters. Every database requires a unique database name and SID.

Enter projemp.local for the Global Database Name, then click Next or Finish.

Creating a Database with DBCA (Step 5)

The DBCA may give you the opportunity to create the database now or save the information to a batch file to be executed at another time. Or, the DBCA may ask you a simple Yes or No as to whether you wish to proceed in creating the database.

Select Create the database now, then click Finish or select Yes to begin the database creation.

Creating a Database with DBCA (Step 6)

After selecting Create the database now, the DBCA may ask you a simple Yes or No as to whether you wish to proceed in creating the database. Yes will begin the database creation process, and No will cancel the procedure. Or, the DBCA will display the database information.

Select Yes or OK to continue.

Creating a Database with DBCA (Step 7)

The Database Creation Progress will display the percentage of the process completion and checkmark the following steps as they are completed:

    1. Creating and starting Oracle instance

    2. Copying database files

    3. Initializing database

    4. Database creation complete

Creating a Database with DBCA (Step 8)

When the database creation has successfully completed, the Oracle Database Creation Assistant Alert will be displayed with the following information:

global database name: projemp.localdatabase system identifier (SID): projempINTERNAL account password: ******SYS account password: change_on_installSYSTEM account password: manager

INTERNAL, SYS, and SYSTEM are the pre-defined users created for the new database. Database objects should not be created while connected as SYS or SYSTEM. It is recommended to change the passwords for SYS and SYSTEM soon after the database is created to prevent inappropriate access. It won't be necessary to change the passwords for SYS and SYSTEM for this course.

The INTERNAL account is responsible for starting up and shutting down a database. The default password for the INTERNAL account is ORACLE. You will not be prompted to enter this password because internally Oracle is aware that you created this database.

The SYS account is responsible for the Oracle data dictionary tables and related database objects. The default password for the SYS account is CHANGE_ON_INSTALL. The data dictionary tables and related database objects are critical for the operation of Oracle. The tables and objects in the SYS schema should never be modified by any user. To maintain integrity, they are manipulated only by Oracle.

The SYSTEM account is responsible for the tables used in Oracle's application development tools and views that display administrative information. The default password for the SYSTEM account is MANAGER.

    Click OK.

    DB:3.05:Temporary Tablespace Oracle 8i x7

    Hi,

We are having oracle 8i database on windows OS.

Now, the existing TEMP TS in our database is dictionary managed.

So, can i drop the existing TEMP TS and create a new one with locally managed ?

if i create new TEMP TS (locally managed) then, should i keep temp datafiles autoextend ON or OFF ? which is advisable ?

doing so, will it help in improving the performance of the database upto some level ?

    With regards

    DB:3.05:Temporary Tablespace Oracle 8i x7

Generally 100M is used a NEXT value.

On a side note, if you have always observed this much space allocation in your temporary tablespace (may be you have dropped and recreated this earlier too), then it would be better to allocate the required space the first time. This would reduce the OS level fragmentation also.

you must have installed the Standard Edition, a midtier databsse
will be installed, mainly as a db cache. However, this databse
is not intented to be used as the backend databse and the using
of this as a backend databse is not supported by oracle.

Have you created a shutdown or startup script (Oracle usually includes a generic one with the install documentation that should work)? You will also need to link the script to the proper Unix run levels for it to work. Your oratab file is another file that needs to be set, but from you post it seems that you have already verified that.

    Hi,

    Process myProc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd"));

However, I can't tell cmd (using its OutputStream), to do something, because I think the command (an array of bytes) isn't finished correctly.

It certainly seems probable that the problem is with the tnsnames.ora file on the database server. The tnsnames file on the database server needs to have connection information for the remote database. Sounds like you're on the right track here.

Is it feasible to create a fast refresh MV for a fast refresh MV?

Also it would be great if you people can foresee any other issues that we may face with this approach.

I have a Windows Server 2003 machine running on Oracle 8i Database . Can we install Oracle 10g Database on the same machine without any issue?

DB:3.00:Installing Oracle 10g With Oracle 8i On The Same Machine dz

Oracle 8i isn't certified for Windows 2003, so you will be on your own when disaster strikes.
As Oracle 8i is also desupported, Oracle won't help you out.
It might work, but then it might not. People stating it works won't help you out, when you are in trouble.

    YMMV

    Thanks a lot!

if you have svrmgrl, shutdown and startup from there. or in NT, StartSettingsControl PanelServices - look for the oracle service OracleServiceXXXX where XXXX is your sid, and stop the service - this should take down your db.

if it is greater then 8.1.7 then u can directly go for 10g.

DB:2.99:How Do I Create A Database From A .Dmp File pp

    create a database with the
same characterset you exportet the file!!
Then You can create the tablespaces you
want to store the data in (name them
as the tablespaces you have in your
other database) then imp the full database
    export into the new db.

DB:2.99:Use 9i Syntax On An 8i Database Via Database Links? ff

Just a really quick question I can't seem to easily find an answer to...

If I connect to an 8i database via a database link from a 9i database, can I then use 9i syntax against the 8i database, or am I still restricted to 8i syntax?

DB:2.99:Use 9i Syntax On An 8i Database Via Database Links? ff

One is 8i and the other is 9i. Sorry, those versions are pretty outdated. Last time I touched an 8i DB is about 7 or 8 years ago.
My guess anyway is that it wouldn't work.
But it's a guess, so don't take me for granted on that.
I guess that the amount of data that would go 'over the line' from 8i to 9i should be as small as possible, so all predicates etc. would be applied while still on 8i, keeping the resultset being sent to 9i minimized. But I might be wrong.

There are some things that would be a lot simpler to query from the 8i database if I could use 9i syntax, and I was thinking that a
database link might be the solution to my problem.Perhaps, if you provide us an example, we can offer some other alternatives?
There's always more than one solution you can use in the world of Oracle.
Perhaps your 8i queries can be rewritten without 9i syntax in a simpler way without a db-link.

And, the people in my IT department aren't exactly great with Oracle, so asking them if this would work would be next to useless, if I
could even reach someone there. That must be pretty frustrating, especially since it shouldn't be too much work to provide you a link, so you could test your thoughts out yourself.

" Your SQL does not need to change except to qualify which database you wish to access." which gives me hope it might work...Probably you stumbled on this link: http://it.toolbox.com/wiki/index.php/Database_Links
But that article has no examples, not even one...I tend to stay away from explanations that do not have a working example/testcase, but only state 'things'.
I'd just stick to the Oracle docs and check this forum and asktom and I always got a crystal clear answer (example included) by doing that.

Can you submit a query to run in batch on a 8i database?

    DB:2.99:Running In Batch mp

Basically what I am wanting to do is submit a query. While it is running submit another query to run once the first query has completed. That sounds more like one job, consisting of two subjobs. If you mean by "query" an sqlplus script, than just perform the two scripts after each other in one batch file:
    sqlplus un/pw @script1
    sqlplus un/pw @script2Or in Unix:
    sqlplus un/pw _EOF
    @script1
    @script2
_EOFIf you mean by "query" a stored procedure, than create a job with dbms_job that calls both procedures:
    begin
    procedure1;
    procedure2;
    end;

What initialization parameters on the 10g and/or 8i database and within the windows environment variables/registries need to be set in order to pull this off?

Can this be done? Can I use the 10g imp ultility and use the .dmp file that to imp into the 8.1.7.0 database? We are doing this in case management wants to revert back to 8i in there is a showstopper issue when we go production on 10g.

True of course, but in a pinch you could create a tablespace with a different block size and move objects to it. Not ideal, or recommended, but an option nonetheless.

I did not pre-create the tables....ran thru it 2x and the same resuslts. I think the real problem was actually going from 64 bit solaris to 32 but windows as floating point numbers are computed and store differently in each environment. Our lead .NET developer did some extensive research on the problem...think he was just curious as it was not that BIG of a problem.

    DB:2.98:Can 9i Client Work With 8i &Amp; 7 Database? ds

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here's my question.

I have a 8i database which I access using a ODP.NET (VB.NET program). I also need access to an Oracle 7 database from the same application.

    1) will 9i client work with 7 database?
    2) if not, if I install 8i 9i Client, can I programmatically pick which one I use (not using the oracle home selection program)?

I could create materialized view of the oracle 7 tables on the 8i database, but seems like alot of duplicated storage. If I can't get this to work I would have to resort to the Microsoft ODP for Oracle since I can use 8i client with it.

    Thanks!

    DB:2.98:Can 9i Client Work With 8i &Amp; 7 Database? ds

Wouldn't changing the system PATH variable in code alter it for every web application running? If I have multiple applications running changing the PATH to suite the current call could inadvertently affect another application. The only other solution is to run MS data provider or ODP.NET/9i on one Web server, and 8i on another.
