DB:4.54:9i On Nt 4.0 Sp6 Dca Error Ora-12571 Creating And Starting Oracle Instance x7

Hi folks, I'm on NT 4.0 SP6 and I'm trying to install the Personal Edition of Oracle 9i with General Purpose database and the Database Configuration Assistant displays error "ORA-12571: TNS PACKET WRITER FAILURE".

I've read a lot here in the installation forum; I've tried installing from the /install/win32/setup.exe, I've
tried different database types, running the DCA standalone after the install, and I still get this error.

    I beleive my system specs are adequate, ie. disc space, memory, cpu, etc...;

Also, in the beginning of the install it tells me that I should have MTS (Microsoft Transaction Server) installed. Is this true? Do I really need MTS for a 'personal edition', non-networked version of 9i?

Can anyone help me solve this problem?

    Additionally:
I saw someone respond that Personal Edition was only for
Windows 98. I don't beleive that this is true. I know folks that have it installed on XP and 2000, as well as 98.

There seems to be a lot of problems with DCA posted in the installation forum. Why doesn't Oracle fix it so it works right?

    Many thanks for this forum.

The connection with Oracle Database server is made through

.When I execute a SELECT, the majory is TNS protocol and
    only some it is TCP.

What do Oracle with TNS protocol in this case?

Hello everyone! I really need urgent help here!
I have an ASP .NET Web Application (4.0) and when someone makes an insert or update operation in any page, the Oracle Client returns this message:

    Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException ORA-12571: Packet writer failure

The real issue is that this error doesn't show eveytime, it only shows when the user opens the page, wait some minutes and makes the operation. When the user opens the page and immediatly makes the operation, everithing goes well.

I have tried everything: reistall the client, try with the Web site in another server, disabling the antivirus in the server and specifying the database server in TSNAMES.ORA file. Nothing works! The error keeps displaying eventually!

    What else can I do?

It appears that the packet header has changed after leaving the server. Enable level 16 tracing for your client and server and compare the server side and client side trace files. You may want to contact your network administrator and fix the TCP/IP packet problem.

Yes i am connecting through client side(TOAD).

When i continously execute the query then there is no problem. But problem occurs when i sits idle more than approx. 2 minutes.

Listner is properly running at server side.

    Also while connecting though toad
    1st Error is
    Ora-12571: TNS: PAcket write failure
    Ora-12541: TNS: No Listener
    Then it connects.

    What is the problem?
    Where i can look into?

    Thanks,

    DB:3.76:Re: Ora-03113: End-Of-File On Communication Channel &Amp; Ora-03114: za

you should create a new listner from listner confrigation.
    As per your database requirements.
Also check paging size of your server, is it competable with RAM?
Check the firewall setting with the network.

    thanks reguards,

Hi folks, I'm on NT 4.0 SP6 and I'm trying to install the Personal Edition of Oracle 9i with General Purpose database and the Database Configuration Assistant displays error "ORA-12571: TNS PACKET WRITER FAILURE".

I've read a lot here in the installation forum; I've tried installing from the /install/win32/setup.exe, I've
tried different database types, running the DCA standalone after the install, and I still get this error.

    I beleive my system specs are adequate, ie. disc space, memory, cpu, etc...;

What's the characterset of your database(s)? There's a known problem between Developer level 8.0.6 and characterset AL32UTF8. Patch12 and above should help, in the worst case the database has to be rebuilt with characterset AL32UTF16.

But in the TNSNAME.ORA file is working fine. meaning SQL*Plus and other Oracle client can connect.

yes I few more tnsnames.ora file other directory for other version and application.

    Hello all.

We are developing a VB.NET solution for a user search to return records to view. Server platform is Win2000 sp2, Database is 8.1.7. We have designed a tiered solution using a middle server with managed components calling to stored procedures returning refcursors to be read into datasets. The managed components are accessed by .NET remoting objects using impersonation for security. In turn, the remoting objects receive calls from client CSS modules with parameters for the searches and identification (for the remoting impersonation). My issue is: everything works well, except that I get occasional errors from the database, either ORA - 1257: TNS: packet writer failure; or ORA - 24761: transaction rolled back.
In either case, repeating the search will usually result in a successful return of the records requested, but it will be annoying for our users to have to click twice to get the information, as well as unsatisfying to us as developers. Does anyone know how this happens and how to remedy?

    Thanks for reading this.

    Aloha,

Sorry i dont get that part. I just thought that TNS names should be in "/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/network/admin/" since the pre-created instance is working and its TNS name is on that .ora file. What i did is i just added the TNS name of the newly created instance and it works. We are still talking about the server database. Please enlighten me for im a newbie on linux installation of 11g R2.

    Thanks,
    Hades,

    Aloha!

Thanks all for the time and effort give to my issue. I solved if by creating a new Listener with a different port and deleted the the old one. after which i edited the newly created Listener, change the port to the normal 1521 port, and everything works well.

Once again thank you very much.

technically, this is an Oracle question, not an Informatica question. Sounds like your TNSNAMES.ORA file is not configured correctly.

ORA 12571 TNS Packet Writer Failure

I'm building a middleware client application (ASTA connectivity in a custom Delhi 7 server). I've got the server running on a Windows 2003 Server machine, and after the app runs for a long time (couple days seems like), I'll issue a client request and get the above error. Only feedback I get from those familiar with running the ASTA code is "Sounds like an Oracle config or install issue to me". If i just shut down the running 'server' app, restart, all is fine (no need to reboot the Windows 2003 server machine).

I've searched the Oracle archives on this one - seems like it rears up occassionally, and there may be a myriad of causes/conditions that create it.

I'm a 'naive' Oracle user - and not sure where to begin solving the issue.

As far as the config files, my .ora and .net are very 'plain' (basically what others here use to run the oracle 'forms' enviroment). ((I've included text at bottom of this message))

    One post suggested:
"Enable SQL*Net tracing to diagnose the root cause".
Can someone point me what config I should enter for this... and where the log file will reside ??

    Thanks

    Hi All,
ORA-12571 is a network error. Whenever network is heavily loaded ORACLE throws this error. This is a bug in win NT 4. Check which service pack are you using.
This bug is been succesfully corrected by MICROSOFT and service pack has been released. Try to get service pack 6a. This service pack is released after service pack 6. This service pack will get from MICROSOFT website.

I was also getting this error but everything calm.
I recommended this to my SYS ADMIN and network guy done accordingly.

I think it will definately solve your problem. For any query can contact me on goel_sumeet@yahoo.com.

    Friendly yours

    Hello Keith,

that sounds like you have several database related issues, but you don't use the APEX Listener or have an APEX related problem, so it seems you've posted to the wrong forum.
I recommend posting again in the {forum:id=61} forum, where you'll find the dbas.
The link above already pointed to a post in that forum. The metalink article referenced there could be interesting for your DB Listener issue.

Hi, we have recently upgraded our production server (unfortunately still running 7.3.3.0.0), and now periodically receive both 600 internal error codes and TNS Packet Writer Failures (have been unable to track any consistency between failures, plus the trace files either have 'harmless' SQL statements or no statement).
Has anyone received similar error messages, and if so, how were they resolved, please?

Background: the server is running 2 P3 processors with 2 Gigs of RAM. We're using 3 Compaq branded, Intel chipset 10/100 NICs with the Compaq fast ethernet drivers and are using the Adapter Teaming option so that the 3 cards appear as one to the server and to the LAN. The idea behind this being to create a virtual 300Mbs NIC since we don't have Gigabit capable switches yet.

    Would really appreciate any feedback

Hi folks, I'm on NT 4.0 SP6 and I'm trying to install the Personal Edition of Oracle 9i with General Purpose database and the Database Configuration Assistant displays error "ORA-12571: TNS PACKET WRITER FAILURE".
I can't get through the db configuration; All else appears

I've read a lot here in the installation forum; I've tried installing from the /install/win32/setup.exe, I've
tried different database types, running the DCA standalone after the install, and I still get this error.

    I beleive my system specs are adequate, ie. PIII, disc space, memory, cpu, etc...;

We test this against different Oracle database versions (8i, 9i, 10g) on two different network environments - the result is the same. On the same computer we have installed 10g client and it connect successfully to the databases.
Have someone experience with such problem?

Did you connect to any other versions of Oracle from this same machine? I've noticed that if connecting to
multiple versions of oracle, or if using multiple oracle
products (forms, dba studio, reports) for multiple versions on the same pc, the tnsname.ora file that is used by
a product may be different than you expect.

Make sure the tnsnames.ora file that dba studio is using
has the correct entries for the database you are trying to connect to.

I have installed Oracle 8i (v8.1.7) on my Win2000-based PC and everything seems to work fine. SQL*Plus connects OK. Then I installed Forms Developer 6i. Installation went fine. But when I try to start up the SQL*Plus that came with it, it does not connect to the database. The SQL*Plus that came with 8i Personal still connects fine.

I created the necessary TNSNAMES.ORA entry and followed all the installation instructions, but I keep getting a ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure. Why does this happen? Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

    Thanks!

I'm using VB6, Oracle 8.1.6, The Oracle 8.1.6.2 OLE DB driver and ADO 2.5. I can populate all other fields in the table, but I can only put nulls in the BLOB. This occurs using OraOLEDB.Oracle as the provider.
I get error: ORA-12571 TNS: Packet Writer Failure.

But, if I go into Access 97 and link the Oracle table, then open it as an Access recordset, I have no problem writing text data to BLOB. Gotta be a driver problem.

    DB:2.77:Can't Populate Blob... cf

Since you're using the Oracle OLE DB provider, I'd suggest that you post this question to the OLE DB forum.

Note that I recently posted code that walks through BLOB and CLOB stuff to this forum-- I believe it contains both ODBC and OLE DB paths...

for what i know, MSDAORA provider doesn't support Oracle data types introduced since font face="tahoma,verdana,sans-serif" size="1" color="#000"version/font 8, as CLOB, BLOB and so on, so i think that it uses varchar2 up to the 4k limits and then causes this error.

Have you tried with the OraOLEDB.Oracle.1 provider instead?Nice writing, Thanks for your explanation!

Try using the option to build scripts to create the database instead of creating the database. Then run the script to create database from the cmd window.
If using TCP/IP, can you ping localhost successfully ?

Although the message mentions TNS, it is not about the TNSNAMES.ORA file -- this file has not be changed in months, and, the problem seems to be intermitant...

After then, I was not able anymore to start the dB instance. I do get the error: TNS-12571 TNS:packet writer failure. And some of the time I've get an "End of communication channel" error (which is anyway one of my most favorites ;-) ) I've even tried to install an 8.1.7. instance but still no success!!The error remains!!!!! Hello Oracle Gurus,

Our Oracle 9i database is hosted somewhere else and is behind the firewall. When accessing this database through TOAD, even after 2 minutes of inactivity, we get the "TNS-12571: TNS Packet writer failure" and we have to reconnect to the database again. This occurs in all of the client machines. The Oracle 9i database's firewall is open for the ip address from which we are using TOAD/SQL*Plus.

Is there any configuration that needs to be changed on the Oracle Client or server side to solve this issue? I appreciate your help.

you can set sqlnet_expire_time option in sqlnet.ora file on the database server and set the time less than 2 mins. This to identify if the problem is because of some firewall configuration or other network related issue which causes the onnection to die.

this parameter should keep all the client connection alive but results in extra trafic.

DB:2.68:Ora-12571: Tns: Packet Writer Failure c3

I've seen there is another thread in this forum regarding
    "ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure"
caused by ODP.NET. But it seems a dead thread. So I post this new topic.

During normal utilization of database (without shutdown and restart of DB instance) from ASP.NET pages of web application, it happens (sometimes, it is not deterministic) that execution of
    Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleDataAdapter.Fill (that executes Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand.ExecuteReader)
    raises
[OracleException: ORA-12571: TNS: packet writer failure]

The version of ODP.NET I'm using is 9.2.0.2.102. Is there a known bug that affects ODP.NET and causes ORA-12571?

Thank to everyone that could help me

    Found that thread:

    ***
ODP.NET 920401 introduced the concept of validating a connection before giving it to an application. Of course, it is expensive and should be used wisely. An excerpt from the Readme:

ODP.NET has introduced a new connection string attribute "validate connection" that should be set to true in order to validate connections coming out of the pool. By default, this property is set to false.

Note that validation causes a round trip to the database for each connection coming out of the pool, which is very expensive in terms of performance.
Therefore, this attribute should be used only if absolutely necessary.

    DB:2.68:Virtualcenter Won't Restart - Ora-12571 Tns Packet Writer Failure c1

I have a problem with virtualcenter. I needed to reboot the server and now the virtualserver service refuses to start.

When I read the virtualcenter log file, I get the following;-

    [2011-03-04 16:29:03.488 'App' 5608 error] ODBC error: (08S01) - [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12571: TNS:packet writer failure

[2011-03-04 16:29:03.488 'App' 5608 error] Failed to intialize VMware VirtualCenter. Shutting down...

If I test the connection under ODBC settings, I get exactly the same error [jpg attached]

    has anyone seen this before?

Are you running in archive mode? If so, you might want to look at controlling how long your retention policy is.
