    Hi, Steven,

I have a question about cookies parameters in include-parameters.

When set the following in my xsql file:
    xsql:set-session-param name="current_user" value="{@sessionid}"/
    xsql:include-param name="mode"/
    xsql:include-request-params/

In the xml output, it looks like this.
    request
    parameters
    ....
    /parameters
    session/
    cookies/
    /request

How come the session and cookies values are not appeared in XML file? However, if I reload the xsql file, the session and cookies values are there. Any idea what might be wrong or it is what should be?

    Thanks in advance.

    DB:3.38:Xsql Session And Cookies sk

I'd expect the cookies not to show up until the page request after the one in which they are set. This is correct since setting the cookies is something that's done on the response. Reading the cookies is reading them from the request.

    Regarding the session variables, it's
always important to say what Web Servlet / Servlet Engine you're using XSQL with. Perhaps the setting of Servlet session variables behaves differently on different servers.

Why would a company like Sony not have the website functionality to know that I am already logged in?

When I look at Options/Privacy/Show Cookies - there are at least 20 cookies under 4 Sony website headings, UK, Service, Service Cust Help .. how many cookies do they need, and why won't the one I need to send an email register?

    The following page:

"Viewing a list of blocked sites
To see a list of sites that you have blocked from setting cookies: "

There is no text after the colon.

Also the same page refers to selecting a "Tools" menu from the Firefox window(whatever that is?) - in order to get "Page info" so that cookies can be blocked. I can't the Tools menu - clicking on the Firefox (at top left hand of page) does not give this option.

I was looking at this page in order to find out how to permanently block specific cookie sites. I block them when they appear when I have set "accept 3rd party cookes to "keep until" - "ask me every time" - and I also have "clear history when Firefox closes" set. However the blocked addresses are deleted when I come out of Firefox - this is very irritating as there are some cookies I wish to permanently block. This means that every time I open a web site I have to click on "deny" cookie several times - even thought they are the same ones I have blocked in a differenrt session. I prefer to choose what I block as some sites really don't work without their personal cookies - usually to support subscriber log in (e.g to log in to the "New Scientist" site)so "private browsing" doesn't really help and as you have mentioned elsewhere blocking 3rd party cookies can also cause problems
    yours
    H.Ruddy
Thank you for "Do Not Track" it's a good start although it will have no effect if the sites ignore it.

I have set Firefox to delete all cookies when Firefox closes. This does not work but I have read this is by design (although there is absolutely no point in having this option if it does not do what it says). So after reading forums I have tried several other things. I have both BetterPrivacy and DoNotTrackPlus installed. I have also set browser.sessionstore.privacy_level to "2" and browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash to "false" in about:config which I have seen in several posts. Finally, I only use the internet with Private Browsing now. Despite all of those precautions, AVG continues to pick up what appear to be the same 9 cookies constantly.

They are all located in ...\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies:
    VKE7AOYE.txt:\adtmt.com.b3e33b5f, VKE7AOYE.txt:\adtmt.com.7247c262,
    VKE7AOYE.txt,

    3Z7Y9OHL.txt:\ad.yieldmanager.com.557bf2b0, 3Z7Y9OHL.txt:\ad.yieldmanager.com.539b0606,
    and 3Z7Y9OHL.txt.

How can I avoid this? I am fairly tired of cookies, persistent cookies, LSO cookies, what have you. What is the point of all of these actions if none of them stop cookies from being saved permanently on my computer? Is it just Firefox that has dropped the ball here or do other browsers also have these issues? I have been a long-time Firefox fan but thinking of changing after all of this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

DB:3.07:Despite Add-Ons And Settings, Cookies Are Still Being Saved After Firefox Closes. km

    Question owner

Thanks for your reply jscher2000. It took me a while me to hunt down what exactly what was causing those cookies but your response helped me to open up my thinking a bit to consider non-firefox alternatives. I got distracted initially trying to see when the cookies were being added which led to a whole side problem of hidden files remaining hidden even when I checked to un-hide them under properties (I finally figured that out using "organize/folder and search options/view" and editing the registry) and then I spent some time performing one action at a time and checking the cookies folder. Imagine my embarrassment when it turns out a game was actually responsible for putting those cookies there (not internet browsing through firefox). Unless there are two applications/add-ons doing it? After deleting some cookies, I started noticing the cookies appearing in a different folder (...\AppData\Local\Temp\Cookies). Either the game changed which folder it was putting the cookies in (originally it was the ...\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies) or two applications/add-ons are putting basically identical cookies in each of the two folders I mentioned. I find it much more reasonable that the game is responsible for both locations and somehow how meddling around with cookies and deleting them and such caused a change given that the game seems to have files in both of those locations (although the files are hidden in one of the locations). Finally, if other people read this, when I was looking for cookies being generated I missed it at first because new files weren't being created necessarily but lines of cookie text were being added to existing files without actually changing the displayed file size. A very long-winded response and probably more than anyone wanted to know but thanks again for the time and effort of your answer jscher.

DB:3.07:How Adf Application Creates Cookies sm

    Hi Experts,

We are working on an ADF application which integrates with UCM, SOA services, BC Service, Oracle Access Manager. In order to access this application, we need to login by providing user id and password. Once we authenticated (through OAM), we can access the application. This application uses multiple ADF sessions and cookies for maintaining sessions.

Here, we are taking a scenario of cookies while accessing the application.

    1. While accessing the home page (includes with login), we are getting the cookies below,
OAM_REQ, ObSSOCookie, JSESSIONID - all return values.

    2. Once we logged in (passing user id and password in OAM for authentication), we receive the cookies below,
OAM_ID, OAM_REQ, ObSSOCookie, JSESSIONID - In these cookies, OAM_REQ cookie returns 'invalid' value except these cookies value.

    3. When we logged out, we receive the cookies below,
OAM_REQ, ObSSOCookie, JSESSIONID - all return values.

Now, we come to our query which is somewhere related to this. While accessing the application regularly, sometimes our application is not working correctly. After removing all the relevant cookies from the browser, application works fine. It might be possible that cookies are not creating correctly.

Here, I am looking for some solutions through which we can remove relevant cookies (while closing the browser) which are stored in browser. We are thinking this way for solving the issue but we would like to know, is this the right way to handle cookies?
Even I would like to know, how server manages the session once we logged out from our application? How server invalides user session, HTTPSession, ADF Session and Cookies (In real scenarios).

I will appreciate for your reply.

    Regards,
    Dilip Gupta.

    DB:3.05:Cookies And Persistence dx

Cookies are tough, and WL5.1 provides little to no help. Start with a very
simple name/value, all alpha chars (or else), and keep it short. Remember
to set the max age to a huge value and remember to add the cookie to the
response, preferably only once ;-). Also, don't be surprised when the
browser doesn't send back anything but the name and value.

I have a cookie demo built in our toolset that I use to test server/browser
differences. I have attached it (280k), but I cannot provide source. Just
put the cookie.war in your myserver directory and add the following line to
your weblogic.properties file (assuming c:\weblogic for your install):

    weblogic.httpd.webApp.cookie=c:/weblogic/myserver/cookie.war

Then you can access the JSPs in the cookie test via:

    http://localhost:7001/cookie/cookie2.jsp

You can use this to look at the cookie generated in your "cookies" folder
    (depending on your browser).

We built a persistent cookie-support into our component frameworks to work
around "limitations" of various server implementations and obvious browser
issues. For example, you will find that your cookie data needs to be
encoded specially or it will be truncated (e.g. a semicolon in the value) or
cause the entire response to fail.

Usually for this symptom I guess that the message is bogus and the site is just misinterpreting some other undisclosed symptom but in your case it sounds as if the site is really not getting Cookies from you when it is expecting them. This can happen if you
are using a backdoor to the site (e.g. something other than the site's home page which you have saved as a Favorite) and you have deleted Cookies for it. E.g. the scenario in that case is this: if you had visited the home page you would have received a Cookie
which you would then present to the site when you request one of the subsequent pages such as the one that you have saved as a Favorite; since you don't have a Cookie to present with that request the site concludes that you must not be allowing Cookies.
A related scenario would involve a change in the Cookie format. E.g. you might still have Cookies to be sent with the request but they might be so old that they aren't compatible with a new format of them; then the site's error message would just be an example
of the most common problem cause when a problem with Cookies occurs. Etc.

I had found the location of cookies.sqlite as referenced by kbrosnan.

I was surfing the internet with my phone the other day. I entered into a chatting blog. I was asked to download a Java applet; that will enable me to chat. I did as I was instructed.

After I had downloaded it (Java applet), I went to the folder where I saved it, attempted opening it, what displayed on the screen of my phone was 'file format not supported'. What that means is that there is no way I could use the Java applet I had downloaded.

    My question now is this:

Is the Javascript in my phone the same with the Java applet in that blog or are they different things altogether?

Do they have the same function or different functions respectively?

DB:2.97:Why Cant I Access My Gmail? ac

Many users have recently become more aware of privacy and either made changes to their cookie settings or installed extensions that stop some information from reaching websites. While this reduces tracking, it also can cause some site functions to break.

Disentangling these issues can take a bit of doing, but here's a fairly quick test.

    (1) Try Gmail in a Private Browsing window. Firefox allows all cookies (temporarily) in this window, so it bypasses any restrictions in your settings.

    Either:

    Ctrl+Shift+p
    File menu New Private Window
orange Firefox button New Private Window

Then try Gmail. Success? If so, see this support article: Websites say cookies are blocked - Unblock them.

    (2) Try Gmail in Firefox's Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, extensions are deactivated.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

    Help Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the small dialog that should appear, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Then try Gmail. If it works, then an extension is probably your issue.

If Gmail still doesn't work, try opening a private browsing window using either:

    Ctrl+Shift+p
    File menu New Private Window
orange Firefox button New Private Window

In that window, try Gmail. If it works, then extension AND cookie settings are probably issues.

I'm still not sure how to read that file but it's starting to come under the heading of more trouble than its worth.

In case you bumped into the 404 from Eric's enumerate Cookies link, I infer that he would now be pointing at this page
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa384026(v=vs.85).aspx

    (Microsoft search for
    wininet cookie enumerate
    )

There now that wasn't too difficult was it.

As a matter of fact it was a bit tricky finding the right keywords. In retrospect I suppose I could have guessed that the new URL would have been a slight modification of the original. E.g. in this case (v=vs.85) has been inserted.

Websites are being asked to review how they track users ahead of imminent changes to privacy laws.

On 26 May European privacy laws come in to force in the UK which give people more control over what data websites gather about them.

This means changes to what websites can do with cookies - small text files used to log data about repeat visitors.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said sites need to be sure their cookies comply with the law.

As the technical solutions are being worked on, firms are being encouraged to prepare by examining their cookies to see what purpose they fulfil and reach a decision about whether they require "informed consent" from visitors to keep using them.

DB:2.95:Questions About The Cookies Used For The Session With Wif d9

Hello all, how are you? Well I am stuck, I need to figure out how WIF works with the cookies.
The problem is I can't make my application with WIF works on production, when the request comes back to the RP with the token,
it seems to loop forever and I can't access the RP.
It seems the request tries to set the cookies (FedAuth).
But at the next request, the cookies are not used in the request!
So my question is how WIF creates the cookies, does WIF create Session cookies? (I can't find any file stored on the machine)
Then if so, do you think the problem may come from the IE not able to accept session cookies?

    Thanx for any feedback :)
    the best soft drink

DB:2.95:Questions About The Cookies Used For The Session With Wif d9

Hey, well I managed to overcome this hurdle. I am not positive I understood all but I think it is very important for the WIF team authors to focus on the risks, pits and falls with cookies.
Okay first thing, my RP application is deployed onhttp://vvvvvvv.rr/RP/
BUT The administrator used an domain alias http://xxxxx.yyy.zz to directly accessthe RP instead of the expected normal address: http://vvvvvvv.rr/RP/

I noticed that the cookies used by WIF doesn't use the field domain but uses the field path set to /RP/ (these fields are used to set up the cookies)
What I could understand is the browser won't send the cookies as the urlhttp://xxxxx.yyy.zz/ doesn't match with the subdirectory /RP/ expected... The cookies would be sent on the next requests if the Redirect url washttp://vvvvvvv.rr/RP/
So after the redirect by WIF, the cookies are set, but are not sent by the browser to the server! WIF will then redirect to the STS (as the user is not authentified) and it will loop forever as STS already authentified the user,
and the cookies are again generated but not sent ... and so on forever!
I read about a similar problem here (not with WIF though):

    http://bit.ly/kl37LU
So after reading the article, I decided to set the path of the cookie to the domain
rootin the WIF configuration at the cookiehandler configuration section,
    [
As a mattter of fact, I saw in the code inside WIF by reverse engineering, the path by default is System.HttpRuntime.AppDomainAppVirtualPath.

Let's see how the path can be actually initialised in the cookiehandler by the configuration :
we have the standard HTTPModule method Init of IHttpModule within SAM (Session Authentification Module) which calls a method calledInitializeModule
    InitializeModule callsInitializePropertiesFromConfiguration()
    finallyGetConfiguredCookieHandler() is called.

Inside this method, the Path property of the cookiehanlder is set up by the path of the following configuration element:
    FederationAuthentification/CookieHandler.
When this value is not set in configuration, well by default the path is set toSystem.HttpRuntime.AppDomainAppVirtualPath by the code
To resolve our problem, what we did is to set up the path attribute inside the CookieHandler section element to the value / instead of leaving the default
value:System.HttpRuntime.AppDomainAppVirtualPath (which is in our case : /RP/)
in fiddler in the response we could see
    Set-Cookie: FedAuth= blahblah; path=/RP/; HttpOnly
    etc...
In the configuration we now have

federatedAuthenticationcookieHandlerrequireSsl=falsepath=///federatedAuthenticationnow in fiddler in the response we can seeSet-Cookie: FedAuth= blahblah; path=/; HttpOnlyetc...

    ]

Then the problem goes away, the session cookie(s) is/are sent correctly on the next request(s) after the
first and unique redirection when the token firsthits the RP, and on all next requests (until the session expires, or when the user closes down
    the browser).
As far I could understand, when you use a domain alias, BEWARE with the session implemented by WIF, as cookies are not so easy to handle!
Basically, we have to be very aware of the domain (not used by wif) and path (used by wif) fields in the cookies. If the request is made on an url not containing the path expected to expect the cookies being sent on this request, the cookies won't be sent
    for security reasons.
So if you used a domain alias to access a virtual application, within the cookie(s), the domain field should not be set and the path field should be set to the domain root /. That way, the cookies will be sent even if you used a domain alias to access
    the application after a redirection....
You need to read all about cookies! It's important if you don't use WIF in normal, usual way.
Well I think we solved the problem. In Fact, I could reproduce the problem on my dev machine, for example I used another path than the real path expected in the configuration(its then loops forever as cookies are not sent by the browser for establishing
a session, and the request is sent to STS and RP and so on...)

I am open for any suggestion byDominick Baier andVittorio Bertocci orKeith Brown.
I think using cookies for establishing the session is brittle at best...

Hopefully my comment is correct and helped someone else out :-)
    Thanx!

    Linda........

"Cookies" are small programs that a website will installon your computer to allow the two to communicate faster. Most times you don't want a webpage putting things on your PCthat could be harmful. Other times, with sites you "Trust", you want to allow
them access, to improve performance. Windows 8 leaves the decision up to you. You must decide which sites you trust,
by allowing cookies, and excludingALL others.

To enable cookies for your trusted site......

Open Internet Explorer on the Desktop:
(Go to the website that is asking to allow cookies.)
    Tools
    Internet Options
    "Privacy" (tab on top)
Under Settings, set the slider to MEDIUM if its not already there.
    Select "Sites" (button)
Enter the web address of the site you want to allow cookies into the boxand select "Allow"
    Apply
    OK

    Then..........
    Select "Security" (tab on top)
Selected "Trusted Sites" Icon (Big checkmark)
    select "Sites" (button)
This time the address is already entered in the box, just click the ADD button

Strangely, while Apple limited my control over cookies they thoughtfully provided me with information on individual slices of cache stored on my machine, instead of just a blanket cache file, something I greatly appreciate. Is there a way to examine the cookies stored so I can make sure that no _gads, _utm*, _ar_a4 or any other junk got by my filters?

Firefox 19.0.2 running on Windows Vista

Firefox 19.0.2 is NOT clearing cookies Tools-Clear Recent History is selected. I have been using Firefox for 9 years now and it keeps getting worse and worse. I know how to clear cookies as I have done it thousands of times. Imagine my surprise today when I went to Google and fount out I was still logged-in from earlier because my cookies were not cleared when I thought they were cleared as they used to be.

I do not like being tracked on the internet. I browse some websites, clear the cookies, disconnect and reconnect to the ISP to get a new IP address. I am not interested in any other non-solution solutions. What I want is for this BUG to get fixed. And it is clearly a BUG because other people are complaining about it.

Can you imagine the security implications of using Firefox when it does not properly clear cookies when people think it does???

Another thing that really bothers me about version 19 is how Firefox hides cookies from you when you are browsing in Private Browsing mode. When using Private Browsing, if you go to Tools-Options-Privacy-Show Cookies it shows only cookies from Google but not the websites you have viewed directly making it appear that no cookies are set when they are. You have to exit out of Private Browsing, Clear Recent History (if it works!) and then re-enter Private Browsing to continue. Think about a news website that limits you to 10 news stories by using cookies. I used to clear the cookies and continue reading the news. I can't do that anymore without exiting out of Private Browsing first. But now that I have discovered that cookies are not being deleted anymore using Clear Recent History, I guess that won't work either.

Who could possibly think hiding cookies in Private Browsing mode was a good decision? Why would you hide anything from the users of Firefox?

Also, I have noticed on some webpages with a lot of images that a black bar stretching the full width of the browser and approximately 50 - 75 pixels high will appear over the rendered page. It disappears when the page is scrolled.

    Hi Friends,
Could you someone point me to RFC's or other useful information for state management using cookies.

I DO NOT want to know how I can use cookies for state management, but I want to know how it is done behind the screen....
    For e.g
Difference between persistent cookies and memory retained cookies.
How cookie data is communicated between browser and server.
How closing a browser during a session affect the cookie create etc etc...

Hopefully I described clearly what I am looking for....

    Appreciate you guys time.

    Kumar.

    DB:2.89:Cookie + State Management 81

    Difference between persistent cookies and
memory retained cookies. If a cookie does not have it's expires attribute set, it expires when the user closes their browser. Otherwise, the cookie expires when the specified date and time is reached.

How cookie data is communicated between browser and server.Through "http requests" and "http responses". A browser sends an http request to a server to request a page. The http request automatically includes all cookies that the server previously set. A server can set a cookie by adding a cookie in the "http response" that is sent back to the browser in response to the browser's request.

How closing a browser during a session affect the cookieA session cookie expires and it is destroyed. A cookie with an expires attribute that has been set persists until its expiration date.

Could you someone point me to RFC's
or other useful information for state management
using cookies.www.google.com. Type in 'cookies' and pick any of the thousands of hits and start reading. Then maybe try "java sessions" or "java cookies". And even "http request response".

Ad-Aware has been regularly turning up huge quantities of unwanted cookies from domains I have never visited.
I set my properties on cookies, so now, when a cookie is presented, a msg box asks if I should accept or block cookies.
This has been enlightening. So many sites I visit are sending me as many as six unrelated cookies at a time! If the cookie name does not match the domain I am visiting, I permanently block it. But more shocking is the number of cookies that are coming thru my email via spam. (You don't even have to open the email to get the cookie! Just let your cursor land on the email is enough!
Another shocking developement - many many emails - and web pages - are accessing my paypal cookie! I can't block THAT cookie permanently, else I won't be able to use paypal! This is private information!!!!

    My questons:
    1. Can anyone think of a LEGITIMATE reason why an email might want to use cookies?
    2. Is there any way to block ALL cookies that come from email?
    3. My system only alerts me when an attempt is made to WRITE a cookie. Should I assume even when blocked my cookies are being read?
    4. Is there any way to block all cookies that come from any domain but the site I am accessing?
    thanks

Cookies are small files that websites put on your computer hard disk drive when you first visit.

Think of a cookie as an identification card that's uniquely yours. Its job is to notify the site when you've returned. While it is possible to misuse a cookie in cases where there is personal data in it, cookies by themselves are not malicious.

Many websites, including Microsoft's, use cookies. Cookies tell us how often you visit pages, which helps us learn what information interests you. In this way, we can give you more of the content you like and less of the content you don't.

Cookies can help you be more efficient. Have you ever put something in a virtual shopping cart in an online store and then returned a few days later to find that the item is still there? That's an example of cookies at work.

Cookies let you store preferences and user names, register products and services, and personalize pages.
