DB:4.02:Would Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade Still Requires To Have Vista ap

I did a few over writes by losing my data on my C partition, and it didn't require to have a Windows 7 installed, or activated. It just took off the data, settings, and so on by putting Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade on.

No, Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade requires that you have a previous existing edition of Windows 7 installed and activated before you can use it. Example: Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. You cannot use it to upgrade Windows XP or Vista.

DB:3.96:When Starting It Asks For Activate Now Or Later In Windows Vista c8

I recently bought a laptop with Windows vista . Wanting Remote Desktop, I chose the Anytime Upgrade option and entered a Windows vista upgrade product key (which I had previously obtained through an academic discoung program). Anytime Upgrade accepted the key, and the upgrade went forward. But 1-2 weeks later, Activation messages began to appear, indicating that I need to activate. And when I reenter the Professional key I provided during the Anytime Upgrade install, I am now rejected. The message tells me: Invalid product key - The following failure occurred while trying to uset he product key: Code: 0xC004F061 Description: The Software Licensing Service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations.
Any idea what went wrong here? During the 1-2 weeks, I installed a larger hard drive and used a cloning tool to copy the original drive to the new drive -- potentially triggering Activation concerns of hardware changes. But even that wouldn't explain the Activation system now refusing my key. If the key was accepted during the Anytime Upgrade install, doesn't that mean the key is acceptable for this upgrade context? My understanding is that an anytime upgrade is still an upgrade for purposes of acepting my existing Professional key -- and the Anytime Upgrade system certainly seemed to think so, in that it happily accepted my upgrade key.

DB:3.96:When Starting It Asks For Activate Now Or Later In Windows Vista c8

Hello jaan81, To use the Anytime Upgrade, you need to use an Anytime Upgrade key. You used the Anytime Upgrade and tried to use a Retail Upgrade key. Retail Upgrade and Anytime Upgrade are different skus and require different Product Keys. The resolution for your issue is to use the Upgrade Product Key with the Upgrade Software that it came with.In your specific situation, I am not sure the best/easiest way to get you to that end goal. I recommend posting in the 'Install, Upgrade and Activate' section of the Windows Answers forum http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsvista.Thankyou,Darin MS

32bit to 64bit is NOT an Upgrade path.

It has to be done with a clean install using a FULLVista 64bit Disk/Licence.

Buy a FULLVista 64bit Disk/Licence versionfrom your local Computer Shop, or online: amazon, newegg, etc.

Please note, you cannot use an Anytime Upgrade key to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7, you need an upgrade package. Windows Anytime Upgrade keys can only upgrade an existing edition of Windows 7 to a higher edition ie. Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows
    Professional.

DB:3.49:Vista Anytime Upgrade - Unable To Upgrade m7

The notebook is an HP 6716b AMD Dual Core 64 bit processor, 2GB memory, with pre-installed Vista Business Edition (64 bit) and Office 2007 (Medialess install). Business Edition (64 bit) working OK and Office Professional activated and working.

I need Media Centre, so purchased Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate edition (64 bit). The upgrade fails at a consistent point 66% into final completing set-up - BSOD Stop x'7B', machine just re-boots and the only recovery that works is to go back to Business Edition. (I was unable to get support form Microsoft without a code, but although it is a legal anytime upgrade at this stage the code is not displayed anywhere). I have tried various drivers, various configurations but never able to get past the first 'set-up boot'.

Did a clean install from the Anytime Upgrade disk and it worked first time. Vista Ultimate Edition worked fine and Media Centre provided exactly the function I needed. However although I was able to re-install most of the programs I needed, and re-establish settings, I was not able to re-activate Office 2007 (files copied to old.windows, but no way to start-up and activate again - that I could find). This means I have had to go back to Business Edition again and re-establish all my settings. I would prefer the Anytime Upgrade to do what it says and upgradfe, but can work around it if able to re-install/activate Office 2007.

DB:3.49:Vista Anytime Upgrade - Unable To Upgrade m7

    Tim:
I recently submitted a question to the Windows Vista Setup Forum entitled Windows Vista Ultimate Anytime Upgrade will not Upgrade, it wants to perform a Clean Install.
I purchased a Toshiba Satellite M305D-S4833 (laptop) with Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium already installed. I ordered the Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate for the advanced security features from the website active at the time. After finally
getting from Microsoft a version that included 64-bit product, I get the following:
At the point where the installation routine asks, What type of installation do you want?, and my choices should be Upgrade or Clean Install, the Upgrade choice is greyed-out, and not available.
At the bottom of the screen I get:
    Upgrade has been disabled.
    - The Upgrade cannot be started. To upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of Windows that is more recent than the version you are already running.
Which makes no sense, because the Vista Ultimate Anytime Upgrade I purchased IS more recent than the version I am running.
Will this Clean Boot procedure through MSCONFIG utility work for me here? How to re-enable the disabled items later?

I'm planning on getting a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium soon. I want to have Ultimate, however. I was thinking about using Windows Anytime Upgrade, but the price is giving me second thoughts. Then I noticed that my university offers the upgrade version
(retail upgrade, not anytime upgrade) at a lower price on their website. Is there any way to use the product key in that version to upgrade, or is using Anytime Upgrade the only way?

To clarify, this is NOT the full retail version. It's the upgrade version normally used to upgrade from Vista or XP. I want to know if that key will work in WAU.

Another question. Would it be possible to use the upgrade disk for a clean install of 7 Pro if I currently have 7 Home Premium installed?

    Hallo,

When making significant changes to your computer such as an upgrade, it is always recommended you backup your system prior to installing a new version of Windows. In your case, you can upgrade to Windows 7 depending on edition and architecture of Windows
Vista you have installed. If you are running a 32 bit version of Vista and want to upgrade to a 64 bit version (edition of Windows 7), you will have to a do clean install, this applies vice-versa.
If you are running consumer editions of Windows Vista such as Home Basic or Premium, you can only upgrade to either Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate. Also, you cannot do downgrades, which means, if you are running Windows Vista Ultimate now, you cannot
downgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium. You must do logical upgrades:
Windows Vista Home Basic Windows 7 Home Basic, Premium or Ultimate
Windows Vista Home Premium Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate
Windows Vista Business Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate
Windows Vista Enterprise Windows 7 Enterprise

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

There are various methods to reinstall Vista.

There is no Windows Vista download available from Microsoft.
You can contact yourComputer Manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of Recovery Disks.
They should do that for a small cost.
To reinstall Vista using their Recovery Disk/s, you Boot from the 1st RecoveryDisk they supplyand follow the Manufacturer's instructions to reinstall:
You will have to change the Boot Order to make the DVD/CD Drive 1st in the Boot Order:
How to change the Boot Order in BIOS:
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange.htm

"How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs, and replace product manuals"
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246

And if you never received a Recovery Disk when you purchased your Computer there should be a Recovery Partition on the Hard Drive to reinstall Vista back to how you bought your Computer.
The Recovery process can be started by pressing a particular Key or Keyscombination at Boot. (Power On / Startup)
It may be F10, F11, Alt + F10, etc depending on the Manufacturer.
Ask them for the correct Key sequence.

And if you do have a Manufacturer's Recovery Partition on your Hard Drive, you should be able to make your own Recovery Disks from it to reinstall the Operating System.
Look under Programs your Computer Manufacturer's name then their System Tools or Recovery Software Headings for them, depending how it is worded.
If you can not find any reference to it, contact theManufacturer for advice on how to make those Recovery Disks.

Some manufacturers no longer have Vista Recovery Disks available.
If that happens, you may have to try this instead:
You can also borrow and usea Microsoft Vista DVD, that contains the files for the various Vista Editions (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate)to be installed. The Product Key on your Computer / Laptop casedetermines which Edition is
    installed.
Other Manufacturers' Recovery DVDs are not to be used for theabove purpose.
Andyou need to knowthe "bit" version for Vista, as 32bit and 64bit Editionscome on different DVDs
Here is how to do a clean install of Vista, using a Microsoft Vista DVD:
"How to Do a Clean Install and Setup with a Full Version of Vista"
    http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-vista.html

And once the Operating System is installed, go to your Computer Manufacturer's website and obtain the latest Drivers for your particular Model Computer or Laptop.

And phone Activation may be required when using the above clean install Method.

I uninstalled SP1 as rebel suggested and did in fact run the upgrade from within Windows not the boot CD. It did go through the upgrade process and after a few hours I ended up with Home Premium again instead of the Ultimate upgrade. Hi,

You question is not very clearly, would please provide more detail information about this problem?

    Here is some information about
    Windows Anytime Upgrade(WAU):

With Windows Anytime Upgrade, you can upgrade to a more advanced edition of Windows 7say from Home Premium to Ultimatein as little as 10 minutes. That
way, you get to take advantage of extra features while keeping your current programs, files, and settings intact.

In the past, upgrading Windows could be a bit of a hassle. In Windows 7, the software you need comes preinstalled. You can buy an upgrade key online or from an authorized
    retail store.

Notice: Windows Anytime Upgrade is only available for online purchase in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

If you have further question about this thread or WAU, please dont hesitate and let me know.

hi all i'm trying to upgrade an OEM version of vista basic to home prem (retail) how do i do it without losing any other oem products on the computer?

    DB:3.38:Vista Anytime Upgrade fk

Camera (whether you mean webcam or a digital camera) is not a problem at all. The drivers will be available from the manufacturer's website.

Drivers for hardware are no problem. The only OEM software you might struggle to replace is anything that you'd ordinarily have to pay for but the computer manufacturer has licensed to you, things like versions of certain Adobe programs - these often aren't
available for direct download from the manufacturer's website due to licensing issues.

Drivers and manufacturer specific software (i.e. *make of computer* Power Options meter/settings program/update manager etc) should all be easy enough to find.

Let's make this simpler. Make a list of every program on your computer you use. Then subtract from that list anything you have the install discs for. Then subtract from that list anything that you know is freely available online (i.e. whichever media player
or unzipping utilities or similar you may use). Then tell me what's left on the list, and we'll see if any of it will be difficult to track down - I would expect not.

It will also be worth going to the support/downloads section of your computer manufacturer's website, keying in your model or serial number and having a look at what downloads are available - should be drivers for every piece of hardware in the machine, plus
probably a few other bits and pieces, depending on what type of computer it is and who made it. Download all the Vista drivers for your computer and put them on a CDR or a USB memory stick before you start (I'm assuming here that this is your only computer,
which means you have to plan ahead a bit more).

The the "Anytime Windows 7 Upgrade" is not available anymore. Can I use the disks I originally received and reinstall the upgrade
    Thank you

DB:3.36:Reinstall Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade jd

The Windows 7 "Anytime Upgrade" is for upgrading from a lesser version of Windows 7 to a higher version (Example: From Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional).

What you most likely have is the promotional offer from about 2 years ago that allowed you to purchase a computer with Vista installed and then upgrade to Windows 7 when it became available.

If this is the case you need to install Vista and activate with the Vista product key and then use the Windows 7 upgrade DVD and associated Windows 7 product key.

Can I reuse the Home Premium license to install on an old XP PC?

When installing Professional can I do the anytime upgrade and use the key from the retail upgrade?

DB:3.35:Windows 7 Home Prem To Pro With Full Upgrade Not Anytime, Can I Reuse Home Prem To Upgrade An Xp Pc 9p

I'll add a little note that I missed in you post.
From what I understand of the licensing process the upgrade versions (not anytime versions) are transferable.
Windows Anytime upgrades are transferrable too, as long as they are only installed on one PC at a time.
Right now, my PC started out with a retail full install of Windows 7 Home Premium which I did the Anytime Upgrade to Pro. If I were to upgrade my motherboard thus creating a new PC. I would be able to install windows 7 Home Premium and use my Anytime Upgrade
to Pro again without any problems.
All versions whether they are full, upgrade, or anytime upgrades are all transferrable. Only OEM versions of Windows 7 are not transferrable.

weeks received a package that contains two DVDs, one 32 bit and one 64 bit Vista Ultimate. The DVDs came with new key and NO guidance. When I tried to load the Anytime Upgrade Ultimate 64bit, with new key,and selected the Upgrade option; after hour or so,
the upgrade said the install failed (with no real reason) and said to reboot. When I rebooted, some options were displayed, andthe Home Premium was rolled back in. My new Dell with 64 bit Home Premium, doesn't have any new hardware installed, very little
software installed. Why did the upgrade fail or did Microsoft send me the wrong DVDs or should I use the original Anytime Upgrade key? Also, the Vista Upgrade Adviser (which was recommended) doesn't run on 64bit Vista.

SUCCESS!!!! Give me some medals!! After two more attempts, I did get Vista Ultimate to load over Home Premium..... Here is how I did it.

    1. Do a clean boot.
    2. Use msconfig to disable all non-Microsoft services, disable those Microsoft services not needed for a basic PC, disable all Start programs.
    3. Unplug all USB or Firewire devices, except the mouse/keyboard (mine is wireless).
    4. Unplug your network
    5. Disable all unneeded hardware in Device Manager.
    6. Poweoff reboot.
What I did not do: I did not uninstall video driver or sound driver.
    7. Start Update from in Vista Home Premium.

After 2-3 hours, enter the time zone, date/time and reboot.

    8. Undo everything you did above in1-6.

I didn’t try any update on my A200 but you can try to do follow: install Vista using delivered recovery media. When Vista starts for the first time go into Control panel and there you can find option ‘Add/Remove programs’. Remove all stuff designed by Toshiba.

When all this stuff is removed, make Vista upgrade. After finishing Vista upgrade install all Toshiba designed stuff in specific installations order starting with Value Added Package. Check please download page if all this tools and utilities are available.

As far as I know all tools and utilities are designed as ‘universal’ tools and I can not imagine there is some difference between tools for premium or ultimate Vista version.

DVD player is part of installations image only and I can imagine that upgrade installation has changed something but the upgrade procedure is responsible for that. I do not see any connection to Toshiba.

As I said I do not have upgrade CD but if I find one I will try to test it on my Vista (Premium) preinstalled A200-1CR.

Bye and I hope you will report about your experiences with Vista upgrade again.

in some way from using anytime upgrade? Can I purchase the family pack, upgrade all three of my PC's to Win 7 premium and then use anytime upgrade to upgrade just my laptop to Win 7 professional?

    thanks

Does anytime upgrade reinstall system files? eg: from home premium to ultimate are system files reinstalled?

    DB:3.28:Anytime Upgrade Question cj

A Windows Anytime Upgrade is only available as a product key used to upgrade an existing edition of Windows 7 to a higher edition. eg. Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.
System Files are not affected, it only unlocks the additional features of the edition you are upgrading to and changes branding information to the edition its being upgraded to.
If you need to go back to your previous version of Windows 7, you will have to do a clean install.

If the product you have is Windows 7 "Anytime Upgrade" you can't use that to move from Vista/XP to Windows 7. You need to buy the retail Windows 7 Upgrade product not the "Anytime Upgrade."

Windows 7 "Anytime Upgrade" is for moving from one version of Windows 7 to a higher version, like Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.

    Hi Malcolm,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community!

As per the description, you are facing issues with upgrading the operating system from Windows Vista to Windows 7.

Unfortunately, Windows Anytime Upgrade is no longer available for Windows Vista.

If you're running Windows Vista and want to upgrade your PC, go online to upgrade to Windows 7.

    How to install?

DB:3.28:Upgrade Disc Advises Anytime Upgrade But Do Not Have Upgrade Key 7z

I don't understand. An Upgrade Disk and Anytime Upgrade are two entirely different things.
Anytime Upgrade is done by download from Microsoft, not with a Disk.
I think you need to clarify exactly what your question is....

Anytime Upgrade has never been a download. It is simply a Product Key that releases the already existing code on the computer.

I am running vista sp1 and purchased a Windows Anytime Upgrade 7 Ultimate many months ago. Now I want to upgrade, but there is no longer a path to upgrade using the Upgrade key (proof of license) that I have. Please don't tell me I need to pay for Win

DB:3.26:Windows Anytime Upgrade 7 Ultimate - No Longer A Path To Upgrade Vista x8

That never was the case to begin with. Windows 7 Anytime Upgrades have always been only for upgrading an existing edition of Windows 7 to a higher edition. Example: Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.

You need to purchase retail upgrade license.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Windows-Anytime-Upgrade-frequently-asked-questions

    Upgrade paths:
When making significant changes to your computer such as an upgrade, it is always recommended you backup your system prior to installing a new version of Windows. In your case, you can upgrade to Windows 7 depending on edition and architecture of Windows Vista
you have installed.

Also, you cannot do downgrades, which means, if you are running Windows Vista Ultimate now, you cannot downgrade
to Windows 7 Home Premium. You must do logical upgrades:

Windows Vista Home Basic Windows 7 Home Basic, Premium or Ultimate
Windows Vista Home Premium Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate
Windows Vista Business Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate
Windows Vista Enterprise Windows 7 Enterprise
Windows Vista Ultimate Windows 7 Ultimate.
