The only way to do it is to play the DVR recording in real time and have the DVD recorder connected to the DVR output, using whatever compatible connections are available on both devices. The TV need not be involved, other than to monitor what you're recording.

Because of the digital migration, I am considering getting a Comcast DVR. If I fill up the DVR hard drive, is there some way to connect a DVD recorder? If so, could I then record some of the shows to DVDs using the DVD recorder? If this is possible, could someone tell me which DVR I should ask for? I don't care about HD and would not even record in HD. But from the severely limited information on the Comcast web site, it seems like the HD DVR is better or at least has more capacity. On the other hand, maybe two SD DVRs might be a better idea? Either way, I still want to be able to transfer some of the content to a DVD recorder.

DB:4.58:Can A Dvd Recorder Be Hooked Up To The Dvr? 99

You can only transfer programming from the DVR to a DVD recorder by playing back the program and recording to DVD in real time. You'll get whichever DVR is available locally. Call 1-800-COMCAST to find out about your options.

A day or two ago, my screen started fading in and out (the colors go dark for a while and then come back to normal - cycle time is about 15-20 seconds) and my DVD recorder will no longer record from the DVR (R15) reciever. It looks like there has been copy protection added to the video as the screen says something to the effect of "this material cannot be recorded." If the DVR is connected directly to the TV, the image is fine, but going through the DVD recorder distorts the image. Has there been some kind of copy protection added to the DirecTV signal or is this a problem with my DVD recorder? Note that I have been recording to the DVD with no problems up until now.Thanks.

The typical setup to record from your DIRECTV Receiver/DVR to a VCR or DVD recorder is: * DIRECTV Receiver/DVR Audio/Video Output - matching TV A/V Input (e.g. INPUT1)* DirecTV Receiver/DVR A/V Output - matching DVD/VCR Recorder A/V Input * DVD/VCR Recorder A/V Output - matching TV A/V Input (e.g. INPUT2)Use the TV's Input/Source Selector Function to switch between the DIRECTV receiver and VCR/DVD Recorder. What is the best way to connect my HD DVR to my HD TV and my non-HD DVD player/recorder. Occasionally, I use the DVD player/recorder to burn a DVD from something I've saved on the DVR. I thought of connecting the DVR to the DVD via an HDMI cable, then run an HDMI cable from the DVD player to the TV but I don't know if I lose the HD signal by passing it through the non-HD DVD player.

Another thought was to connect the DVR to the TV via an HDMI cable, then connect the DVR to the DVD using the old red/white/yellow cables (forgot what they are called) and then connect the DVD to the TV via an HTMI cable or another red/white/yellow cable.

HDMI Out From Recorder to HDMI (4) on TV

Audio IN Red/White from Recorder to DVR comcast box

Svideo IN from recorder to DVR comcast Box

DVR box is HDMI (3) to the TV

When I tried to record I set the input to HDMI 3 and had the regular channel on 104 and could see picture and sound.

I pressed the record button on the recorder, it started the recording process and everything looked fine.

I then went to HDMI (4) that the recorder is set to, got the blue screen and pressed play on the Toshiba. It began to play and just black screen with no audio.

I then tried it another way which did not work. I set the tv again to the HDMI 3 and channel 104 then switched to the HDMI 4 the DVD recorder I got the blue screen no picture or sound and pressed record. Same end result black screen and no sound.

Has ANYONE with a SA box been able to do this since the guide switch? This is what Comcast says in a FAQ:

    http://xfinity.comcast.net/meetyourguide/

"Yes, you can still copy programs recorded on your DVR to a VCR or DVD recorder using the audio and video outputs on the set-top box. Connect the audio/video cables from the set-top box to the audio and video inputs of the VCR or DVD recorder. Then to copy a DVR recording, just push RECORD on the VCR or DVD recorder while the DVR recording is playing. The copy occurs in real time which means a one hour program will take one hour to transfer over. The TV set and set-top box cannot be used while the transfer

is taking place so you may want to copy programs overnight."

I get a copy protection error when I try to record anything on my DVD recorder - even live TV.

I also get a non-descript error/failure when trying to record from my Comcast DVR to my DVD recorder. It records for a few seconds and then fails? I actually stopped it one time after just a few seconds and got a viewable recording, but if you let it record for more than 10 or 20 seconds, it cuts off?

I was able to record in the past from my Comcast DVR, but something seems to have changed?

Is this a copyright protection issue or maybe an issue with recording HD DVR recordings? I don't remember the error saying anything specific. Or is there another problem?

Yes, basically you would do the same thing recording to a DVD recorder as a VCR.

You hook up your yellow / white / red composite cable from the DVR output to the composite input of your DVD recorder Set the DVD recorder for line input. Some units have two inputs, one on the front and one on the back. If so, you need to choose the proper input.

Set the DVD recorder to record, and start the playback from the DVR at the same time, and it will copy the recordings to the DVD. Follow the directions from the recorder to add multiple shows and then finalize the disk if your DVD recorder needs to.

I just upgradedand am confused. I used to use a DirecTV receiver and VHS recorder to tape some of my favorite programs and could watch them again and again.

I want to keep some shows/games that are recorded on my DirectTV DVR (HR-21) bytransferringthem onto a DVD to be re-watched at a later date.

Old setup:I used to have a standard definition DirecTV receiver and a VCR attached to my television. I could record shows/games that I wanted to keep for later review onto VHS tapes.

New setup: I now have a high-def receiver with DVR (HR-21). I can schedule and record my shows to the DirecTV DVR but it's filling up quickly. This means that I won't be able to keep the shows as long as I would like to.

How do I record some of the shows I want to keep from my DirecTV DVR (for years) onto a DVD? I do have a Philips DVD recorder. Essentially, I want to "offload" some of my recordings from the DirecTV DVR to a DVD disk.

Do I play the shows I've saved on my DirecTV HD-DVR and record them to the Philips DVD recorder? Is this hard to set up? I don't seem to understand the chain of equipment. Essentially I'm trying to approximate my original receiver/VCR setup by using the new HD-DVR receiver with a DVD Recorder -- ending up with a DVD disc rather than a VHS tape.

Does anyone have this set up? Should the DVD recorder be attached to the TV or the DirecTV DVR? Is one type of cable preferred over another?

I would like to know how to record the CC from video input to my RCA DVD recorder. The video input comes from an R15 reciever and consists of live TV or previously recorded video from the DVR (part of the R15).The CC plays when I watch live TV or DVR recordings just not when I watch a DVD made from those videos.

DB:3.96:Closed Captioning To Dvd Recorder sx

The R15 only passes the CC data through to your TV. The TV is what does the decoding and displaying of the closed captioning. If you are recording to an external DVD recorder from your R15, that data should also be recording. When you play it back, your TV should still recognize and be able to use it.I'm guessing this is a problem somewhere in the DVD recorder, as opposed to the R15.Carl

You need a capture card, and it matters on what you purchase depending on if you want std def or high def shows transfered.

Hauppauge makes a HD one that would connect to the DVR with component cables. For std def, there are alot of choices and would connect with the composite yellow / red / white cables. To find one that would work for you, Newegg, Amazon and simiar online retailers sell a wide varity of them.

You need to connect a set of A/V cables (red/white audio and either yellow composite video, or S-video) from the Output jacks on the DirecTV receiver (HR20 or H20) to a set of matching Inputs on the DVD recorder. Then you need to set the DVD recorder to use that set of inputs (typically Line IN or AV IN). How that's done depends on the DVD recorder and it should be described in the recorder manual.

I plan on buying a new DVD or DVR recorder. Some come with tuners and some without. Can I use one without a tuner and just connect it to my cable box and still get all the Comcast features?

    Fairfax Johnnie

    DB:3.81:Dvd Or Dvr Recorder m8

There are still Comcast area's that the limited basic channels are in clearQAM. Many other area's are starting to lose the clearQAM as Comcast moves forward with a 100% encrypted channels.

As Comcast systems differ on if they still have any clearQAM channels left or not, you could find a recorder with a clearQAM tuner, but don't expect it to last too much longer . Some recorders, even those without tuners, do have iRblasters that can control a cable box for changing channels on the cable box when the recorder needs to change channels.

For a long term investment, your only other option is to purchase a Tivo and add a Comcast supplied cable card. That will get you the encrypted channels on your digital TV package. Any other solution on a system with full encryption would be to place a Comcast supplied cable box inline with the recorder to control the channel changes.

I wonder if the DCH is different? I have a DCT-6412P2, and all outputs are always active. I can watch stuff on the analog outputs, even when the DVI is in use. (yes, the box is a bit older and has DVI instead of HDMI. It's the same, but a different connector and no audio).

You will not see the box's graphics (menus, guide, etc...) on the SD outputs unless the box is on an SD channel and configured to output 480i for "4:3 OVERRIDE".

The non-AV connections are typically disabled. They are generic ports provided by manufacturers, but rarely used (some newer boxes don't even have them.) The USB jack can provide power to charge a device or run a light or fan.

That option was removed. You can feed the output of the DVR into the input of the VHS/DVDR/etc.

    http://xfinity.comcast.net/meetyourguide/#faqs

I no longer see an option to copy a program I recorded on my DVR to a VCR. Is there another way to do this?Yes, you can still copy programs recorded on your DVR to a VCR or DVD recorder using the audio and video outputs on the set-top box. The TV set and set-top box cannot be used while the transfer is taking place so you may want to copy programs overnight.

DB:3.69:Dvd Recorder Attachment To Standard Cable? m1

Can I attach a DVD recorder to standard cable? Or do I have to get a cable box? What type of DVD recorder should I get? With digital tuner, analog turner or both?

I want to attach this to a second set. My main set already has DVR and it works just fine. I have been looking at DVD recorders and it gets very confusing reading the specs. One that seems to fit what I wantis the JVC DRMV150B. Any help greatly appreciated.

DB:3.69:Dvd Recorder Attachment To Standard Cable? m1

You can attach it directly to the cable and it will receive any non-encrypted channels and tune them directly with the DVD. A digital tuner will work best for that. However, more and more areas are encrypting channels other than basic (mostly local). If you're fortunate enough to find a DVD with cablecard capability then you can access all the channels in your package. If you use a cable box to feed the DVD then you will have to use the tuner in the box and control it somehow from the DVD, and you will be limited to the resolution output by the box. A lot depends on what you want to use the DVD for. If it's to archive programs then you might consider connecting the DVD to the DVR and recording the programs from the DVR. If you just want another setup similar to what you have, you could just get another DVR -- maybe TiVo.

I am not allowed local channels by directv in the area I live. I have an outside antenna connected that pick up NBC and CBS perfect. When Installed in July 2007, the installer connected that antenna to the DVR receiver and then out to the tv. As far as playback, everything has worked perfectly.Today I tuned into CBS, directv DVR off, and hit record on my dvd/vcr recorder.....didn't record. After talking to 3 different directv technical reps that had 3 different answers I am now not able to recorder on my dvd/vcr recorder, programs FROM the DVR. It worked before.Technical had me move the antenna connection from the DVR to my tv and then directly into my dvd/vcr recorder. He said I didn't need that outside antenna connected to the DVR.Since that change, when I play a recording from my DVR List, it doesn't record. Also, no one at directv on the phone, can tell if it is possible to have the ability to have my dvd/vcr recorder to record programs FROM the DVR List and Local channels using my outside antenna. If I have not confused anyone, your answer or help is really appreciated.

Your first comment is interesting because the tech rep on the phone told me the exact opposite, and recommended me to change my OTA directly to the tv or vcr.The 2nd comment I know about, I haven't had trouble transferring my recordings from the DVR to VCR/DVD player....that is until the tech rep on the phone told me to change my OTA connection. Thanks for your information.

DB:3.63:Hd Dvr To Dvd Recorder Connection Possible? 73

no, your taking the hd signal and running it through an analog tuner out to the tv. you could split the cable when it comes out of the wall, then run one end of the cable to the box and the other to the dvd recorder, then go component cables or hdmi from box to tv for hd and then go out of the dvd either composite or coax to the tv. you would then have to switch to the correct input your watching using your tv's remote, you will not get any hd from the recorder, but you can watch hd utilizing the hd input source.

getting a dvr is how you solve the issue easily.

I recently moved my DVD recorder from a house that had DISH dvr service to a house that has Comcast. The problem with Comcast (DCH3416) is that the S-VIDEO / COMPOSITE connections show a stretched SD and a letterboxed HD. WIth DISH I could record both SD and HD stations without any distortion and actually did most recording off HD channels. I have the menu set properly and my HDTV works perfectly with 4:3 override set to "off" but 4:3 override seems to still be "on" with the cable connections running from the box to my DVD recorder.

Does Comcast have a better dvr or is there a way to fix this nonsense?

    Thanks for any responses.

DB:3.63:Problem Using Magnavox Dvd Recorder zx

Yeah, it's the setup menu. It's set correctly and my tv displays perfectly both SD (pillar box) and HD programs. The problem is with the S-VIDEO or COMPOSITE seems to default to SD stretch mode regardless of any menu setting. My dvd recorder upconverts from SD to 1080p but must have a pure SD signal to begin with and not that friggin' stretch.

I called Verizon up and they helped me alittle with the connections, but i still couldn't figure it out.

Verizontold me to call Sony up to figure out therestand Sony did an amazing job helping me set it up.

I'll post tommorow how to set it up, incase anyone wants to record from their DVR to a DVD Recorder, or straight from their TV to a DVD Recorder. I will say, definitely get a Sony DVD recorder. There tech support was great and the DVD recorder is really good.

I have a 2005 Samsung S4080R DirecTV TIVO and a VCR hooked up to my 2005 Toshiba TV. I just purchased a Toshiba D-R400 DVD Recorder. Can I hook up the DVD Recorder, and still keep the VCR connected for occasional use, or will I have to disconnect it? Can someone give me some advice about how to do all the connections?

DB:3.57:Hook Up Dvr, Dvd Recorder, Vcr To Tv? dz

Any recorder needs two connections, an input from the TiVO and an output to the TV. I'm not familiar with the Samsung, but assuming it has the typical two Line outputs, you would either need to sacrifice the recording capability of the VCR or get some sort of A/V amplifier that would let you 'split' one of the outputs so it could feed both recorders. I use an audio/video amplifier that takes one composite + stereo audio input and turns it into three outputs. Here are a couple of examples of such a device:http://www.hometech.com/video/compositesplit.htmlFor the output from the DVD recorder, you either need a free, matching input on the TV or some sort of selector connected to one of the inputs that's already in use. Ideally, the DVD recorder would be connected to an HDTV via either HDMI or Component video. If your TV is SD only then you either need a free composite or S-video input or a selector switch connected to an input that is to be shared between the two recorders.

I have my Comcast HD DVR hooked up to my RCA DVD recorder via S-Video. HD DVR format output 4:3 widescreen. DVD Recorder video set to the same. The image output on the screen is indeed widescreen. The issue is, the bottom of the image (about a 1/16th of an inch) is stretched across the top of the image. It's like this tiny sliver that is the bottom of the image appears at the top. I've adjusted the format, the resolution, etc. on the tv and on the recorder but cannot get rid of the sliver. My work around has been to record at 4:3 pan and scan, but I lose the right and left edge of the image. Could the DVD Recorder be picking up something from the HD DVR that isn't visible when only watching the direct line (HDMI) from the HD DVR? Or is it the DVD Recorder itself?

DB:3.56:Hd Dvr Hooked To Dvd Recorder Issue fz

I have this same problem too. If the image fills up my widescreen tv, then on the dvd recorder it will be a 2:40 like ratio widescreen image with bars on top and bottom with the image kinda squished. If the image is a 2:40 widescreen image with the bars, on the dvd recorder it will be extremely squished with bars. If i record a full screen image with the bars on the sides, then on the dvd recorder i will get a smaller box in the middle of the screen with wide bars on all 4 sides.

I never had this issue with Directv's HD Dvr boxes, only with Xfinity's boxes. I will be getting another box, different model and will see if this one is different. Otherwise i will have to get a HDMI to S video downscaler box for about $50 and see if that fixes the problem. If not then i will have to wait till i get money to get a blu ray recorder or a dvd recorder with HDMI imputs. Or maybe a TIVO box and service? My dvd recorder is the Panasonic DMR-E55 model. I wish someone can help us out on this? Your not alone. I wish me and my mother didn't give up on Directv, i sure miss that HD Dvr box and all it's features.

The new DVR currently will not record--I am told by customer service that a future download will correct this--but they do not know when. How can I get more specific information as to when the future corrective software download will occur. Currently, my DVR is useless. Here's my second question: I used to be able to copy programs from my old Tivo HD DVR onto my DVD recorder. Ever since I switched to the new H20 DVR, I have not been able to record onto my DVD recorder--at least the video. The audio picks up but not the video. Is this a glitch or are the video signals on ALL programming being encrypted?

winniepoah - While you are trying to get it to work leave the HDMI disconnected at the STB. Watch for picture on the TV on the DVD input.

You can connect the DVD to the TV either HDMI or AV.

You can connect the STB to the DVD either
    av out to av in
coax out to antenna in tune DVD to analog channel 3 (or 4)
    S-video out ( audio) to s-video in ( audio)

Make sure you select the right input on the DVD menu.

Also, I like to use the press OK screen that the STdisplays when it is "off' to make sure everything else is set up right. Leave the STB off and look for the pressOK screen on the TV (through the DVD) when you see that turn on the STB you will be able to record the show.

I am a Time Warner cable user and would like to copy a sporting event from my dvr to an external recorder other than a dvd, preferrably to the computer or external hard drive. My dvr has component outputs. Suggestions?

I have the HD DVR and would like to add a DVD recorder. Is there anything that I should know (i.e. won't record HBO, PPV) or will I be able to burn straight from my DVR to a DVD so I can keep movies?

I'm trying to figure out if the following setup will accomplish what I would like to do. The components are:1. HR-21 Directv DVR2. HDTV3. Home theater system with one set of RCA audio input jacks and DVD receiver with upconvert4. DVD Recorder/VCR combo with upconvertWhat I want to do is hook these up so:1. Can watch HDTV2. Can record from the DVR onto the DVD Recorder without changing cables.3. Can play from the either DVD player and listen to TV, DVD recorder/VCR through the home theater receiver. How do I set this up? Do I hook up the DVR to the TV using the HDMI and then separately connect the DVR to the DVD recorder using the component cables and then hook up the DVD recorder to the TV with a different HDMI input? Or do I hook the DVR only to the DVD recorder and then to the TV and then everything flows through the DVD recorder? If this is the case, does the DVD recorder need a digital tuner? For the audio, can I just run everything to the TV and then hook the TV to the receiver audio inputs?Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming your TV has two HDMI inputs, here is how I'd hook everything up. DVR - TV via component. Both DVD's - TV via HDMI (almost all DVD upconversion setups require HDMI to operate). DVR - DVD recorder via S-Video and RCA Audio. Assuming your home theatre has an optical input, DVR - Home Theatre via optical, DVD - Home Theatre via RCA audio. If your home theatre has no optical or coax digital input and only has RCA, then your idea of running out from the TV to the HT is okay, but don't use it unless you have to. That output is primarily designed to remove the audio from an OA signal and feed a AVR. You can't get Dolby through the TV back to the AVR with Directv.
