    Hello,

I'd like to create a restore point before I install some new programs. In Control Panel - System - System Protection, under Protection Settings - all I see is "Searching..." under Available Drives.

Because this is hung in Searching, I cannot go any further.

I previously did run a System Restore, from safe mode, a month or so ago. To my knowledge it worked fine, and I'm having no trouble with the computer at this point, but I would like to set up restore points.

    Taking your questions in order:
    Computer is HP 19.4.06
System says it is MS Windows XP Home Edition version 2002
    Service Pack 3
Internet browsers are ie and firefox. cannot find where to look for which versions inm my control panel sorry, but they are automatically updated.

No idea what IDE or SATA drives are, sorry.
    Antivirus is Avira basic
    Also Malwarebytes.
    Both updated automatically.

Problem arose out of thin air, after 2 years without major issues. except that I may have switched off from plug a few secs before the final blank screen but that is nothing new.

It has working CD / DVD drive built in

The system originally came with Windows 98 and that is the only boot disk I have.

The messages that bother me are
"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encoiuntered a problem a nd needs to close" which comes up every time I start up.
and when I try to make a restore point by clicking on System in cont panel I get
"System restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart and then run SR again" - which doesn't make any difference.

There is an occasional issue with sound, eg from YouTube, Amazon music clips, Skype, etc. sometimes it is OK and sometimes no sound. It seems to come and go without my help.

Your prognosis about Win 7 is a nightmare! Thanks. Maybe we can rescue this.

When you perform a system restore, you are reverting the computer to a previous state where Norton don't have any updates. Sometimes even the updated files from Norton get corrupted during system restore process. Hence it requests you to get updates so that it can provide complete protection for your computer. Let me know if you need any further assistance with using Norton.

Help. I wrote and printed a letter, left my computer and returned about 2 hours later.

The first thing I noticed was that most of the icons had changed in appearance to something identical.

Next, every single click on my icons results in the same message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them.".

Using the Win 7 Troubleshooting software gives the following message "An unexpected error has occurred. The Troublshooting software cannot continue. Error code 0 x 8007005".

System Restore also delivers an error message, including reporting the absence of certain files in my Temp file.

Safe Install does not seem to correct any of these problems.

Whaton Earth do I do now?

    21cpilgrim

DB:2.90:Suddenly Cannot Access Any Of My Programmes In Win 7 - All Icons No Longer Function. 1j

    Hi 21cpilgrim,

Have you recently done any changes to the computer?
    Method 1:
I would suggest you to perform a system restore. The System Restore tool uses restore points to return system files and settings to an earlier point in time. You can use it to restore the operating system to a point in time in which you did not
    experience the issue.
Note: When you use System restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you installed are removed.
To do this, there must be a System Restore point at which the logon was successful. Follow the steps mentioned below to perform system restore -

Insert the Windows 7 DVD, and then restart the computer.
When you receive the following message, press any key:

Press any key to boot from CD or DVD.

Set the following preferences, and then click Next:

Language to install Time and currency format Keyboard or input method
Click Repair your computer, select the operating system that you want to repair, and then click
next. Click System Restore, and then click next.
Click the restore point that you want to use, and then click
    next.

Note Click a restore point that will return the computer to a state where the logon is successful. After you use the System Restore feature, reinstall any programs or updates that may be removed. You will not lose any personal documents. However,
you may have to reinstall programs. You may also have to reset some personal settings.
Confirm the disks that you want to restore, and then click
next. Click Finish, and then click yes when you are prompted.
When the System Restore process is complete, click Restart to restart the computer.
After the computer restarts, click Close to confirm that the System Restore process has finished successfully.

The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

Use an appropriate method to log on. For example, log on by using an older password, or log on by using another computer account.

Refer to this link for step by step procedure to System Restore
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940765
    Method 2:
I would suggest you to perform a SFC scan and check –
    To Perform a SFC Scan-
    1. Click
Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click
Command Prompt, and then click Runas administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
    Allow
    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    sfc /scannow
A message will appear stating that 'The system scan will begin'. Be patient because the scan may take some time
    3. If any files require a replace SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Win7 DVD for this process to continue
    4. If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"
    5. After the scan has completed, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check.
Check the below mentioned link for further guidance on SFC scan -http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
    Method 3:
Also I would suggest you to check if you face the same issue in safe mode
    – In Safe mode; you have access to only basic files and drivers. Refer to the link to start the computer in safe mode and then check -

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

Hello.I cannot install MS updates (or install/uninstall certain software) or perform certain administrative functions. I run Vista Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron.

During the past few weeks, I have not been able to install Windows/MS updates (over 20 stacked up by now) -- Update downloads, creates restore point, starts to install, fails with error screen. Code 80070020, 80070641 and 641 (all listed unknown errors) are
popular explanations. I also have problems with installing other software("Windows Installer could not be accessed"). Further, I have permission issues changing User Account Settings and otherAdministrator functions -- I initiate the process, am asked
for permission, click on "Continue" (logged in as Admin) and nothing happens, try again and again, same results.

Is this due to permissions settings, how I set up Vista initially, or my turning User Account Control on and off, or other attempts to rectify these problems? I have tried many solutions, including reinitializing Windows Installer in regedit (MS onlinechat
help), and various solutions found here dealing with msconfg, computer managementand services. Also tried SFC /scannow and System Restore, etc.,allto no avail. It seems many are having similarissues on these forums, but none of the solutionsseem to
help in my case. I would even consider backing up everything on disc and doing a clean reinstall, but Vista was an OEM factory preinstall. Any insights or help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an HP Pavilion dv7 that is now over a year old. Like with any computer, I have downloaded multiple programs, some of which I don't use anymore. I usually delete the programs that I don't use very often, but after a while, I feel like my computer
might be slowing down just because I have unnecessary services and programs running in the background. I would like to do a system restore (after backing up all of my files, of course), but there are obviously programs which I want to keep after I restore
my laptop - especially as I am a college student, and have some programs that were distributed by my University, which can only be installed once. Is there a program that will do this for me? (I have been researching Norton Ghost, but I cannot tell if this
function is included in the application), or if I backup certain program files from my C: drive, will I be able to install them and have them run correctly after I complete a system restore? Thanks for your help!

DB:2.86:Save Specific Programs For Re-Installation After System Restore. 1a

There is very little you can do to "enhance" the performance of your laptop, other than getting rid of unnecessary background programs and services, using a slender virus scanner and defragging the hard disk once every so often.

What you should specifically not do is install a "System Booster" or "Registry Cleaner". These tools will promise you the sky, they will impress you with countless "error" messages about your installation but they will make no measurable difference to its performance
other than giving you a warm feeling inside. Some of them can cause serious damage.

Due to several problems I re-installed XP. In the setup menu I chose to format/delete/partition ALL partitions, incl. the hidden Dell partition... Now I'm stuck with a TERRIBLE system... I cannot install drivers, drivers are suddenly lost, it's big mess...

Now I thought I could go back to the original state (how it was delivered at home) quit easily, but I found out that's not true... So I wonder if anyone knows if it is possible to restore the disk to COMPLETE DEFAULT settings, which include the hidden partition. Can I restore that?

And about XP: the Resource CD clearly doesn't contain ALL drivers that were installed on my original system (like the monitor M922 drivers). After looking hard I found all the drivers I need, but I wonder if there is a certain order in which they should be installed...

All in all I guess I'm asking for information on how the computer has been installed in the Dell factory: did they use the cd's I have? That's hardly possible! In which order did they install it all? How did they make the hidden partition? Is it possible at all to recreate the original state of my computer or am I just out of luck...?

Or is this something only Dell can do...?

    Hi, David,

Open Windows Update and post back the Error # coinciding with the unsuccessful installation.

Start All Programs Accessories System Tools
System Restore should be located there
If not, you may need to do a factory restore on your system

    Start Click on Control Panel
    Double Click System Icon
    Select Advanced System Settings
    Click System Protection Tab
Turn on System Restore if it is off

    Can anybody help ??
I need to install Silverlight so I went to the MS Silverlight website and downloaded it but there were problems (I do not know what they were, someone else was installing it for me). I tried to uninstall without success. Someone from the main Microsoft Forum
gave me advice to download Microsoft Fix-It which got rid of the half installed Silverlight so I could re-install it. Unfortunately I then acquired a Trojan Virus and had to Restore to a previous System Restore point.
This re-introduced my Silverlight problem and now Control Panel Uninstall and Microsoft Fix-It both insist I do not have Silverlight but when I try to download it from the website it tells me I already have Silverlight5 (5.1.10411.0) installed and
    does not download.
I cannot run certain software that requires it and tells me I need to download it.

I recently had a problem where I thought that a System Restore might help; to my horror, I couldn't restore from any of the restore points.

    Good job!

    Now you know the secret...

What you should do though is mark it as the "Answer" if it solved your System Restore problem so that in the future, people with the same issue might easier find an "Answer".

good day. I get an error saying system restore did not complete successfully. The file and directory is corrupted and unreadable.(0x80070570) meaning i cannot use restore options. THis came up when i wanted to restore my programs to a certain date.

    Hi,

    Follow these methods:

    Method 1:

    Perform
    system restore from
safe mode to a restore point prior to the issue.

Method 2: Run a disk check

For instructions, see Check a drive for errors

    Also see Chkdsk

Note: data loss is probable if there are any bad sectors on the disk and if the check disk utility tries to repair (chkdsk /r) the same.

    Method 3:

DB:2.83:Cannot Automatically Do A System Restore Even When Task Is Created. 7m

I wrote this as part of someone else's thread, and thought I might get more response putting it as a new topic.
I just received my Dell Windows 7 Studio computer about a month ago. For some time, I have noticed that it does not automatically create a Restore point. Looking at the Task Scheduler, I see that it is set up to Create a Restore Point at STARTUP and a 2nd
Restore point at a certain time of the day. Neither of these occur. The only way I can get a new Restore Point is to go to System Protection and "CREATE" a Restore Point manually.
I have spoken to Dell Tech Support and the best they could come up with is to tell me that the "scrp.exe" file (which they claim is the Restore Point executable file is nowhere in my system. I even checked the Registry and it is not in there. The Tech told
me the only way I can recover this is to do a Clean and Install of the Operating System OR just do a manual CREATE of a Restore Point at the end of each day.
First, is it correct that the file involved is the "scrp.exe"?
Next, is there any way to just download this single file and have it work to automatically create Restore Points? (I saw on the web the file which could be downloaded).
Do I have any other options other than a reinstall of the Operating system where I would lose apps and data?
    Thanks

DB:2.83:Cannot Automatically Do A System Restore Even When Task Is Created. 7m

I found an article on MSDN that suggests this is by design, that Windows 7 runs the task but only creates a restore point if none have been created for any reason for the past seven days. Here is the URL to that article:

    HiNotLawgnut,

You may try to enable the default administrator account on your computer and check if everything works normally in the default administrator account and post back the result.

Here’s how you enable built-in admin account.
    a. Go to start and typecmd in the search field.
    b. Right-click oncmd listed and click on “Run as Administrator”.
    c. Once the command prompt opens, type the following command and press enter:net user administrator /active:yes

You should see a message that the command completed successfully.
Log out, and you’ll now see the Administrator account. Log in to the Administrator account and check if you can change the settings.

Here's an article for Vista for the same and the same steps applies for Windows 7.

DB:2.82:System Restore -- Cannot Restore Osc Files Corrupt -- Fix -- Cannot Fix While Disk Is Running x7

    Hi sueg,
Check in event viewer to see if chkdsk ran. Normallywhen chkdsk runs, it throws an event intothe event log.
It should be in the Application event log. Lets verify that it did run.

To fix any corrupt system files, lets try System File checker.
    Click Start
    Click All Programs
Click Accessories and right click on the Command Prompt.
Select the Security Tab and choose "Run as Administrator"
    Click on Command Prompt
    Type SFC /Scannow.
This will scan and fix any corrupted operating system files.

If you are still having problems after a SFC scan, then we can try a In-Place Upgrade which will do a repair of the operating system. You will need to have the DVD installation disk. An OEM recovery disk will not suffice.

Note: After performing In-Place Upgrade, your personal data and installed programs will not be removed but we may need to run Windows Update to install all the available updates for your system to update these system files to the current version. This troubleshooting
process is time consuming and may take several hours to complete.
If your DVD installation disk is prior to Sp1, and you have SP1 installed on your computer, you will need to uninstall SP1 to complete the in-place upgrade and then reinstall the necessary windows updates .

If you would like to perform the In-place Upgrade, let’s refer to the following steps.
    1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.
    2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.
    3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:

    • If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.

    • If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:

    a. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK.
Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.

    b. Click Install now.

    4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista.

Please run Windows Update again as you will need to download and install the most current updates.

If you do not have the Windows Vista Installation DVD, I suggest contacting your PC manufacturer to order a backup disk.

Thanks and let me know the results.

There are a few things you could certainly do, e.g.

Perform a Factory Restore, using the method built into your machine.Do a fresh installation, using a Windows 7 installation disk.
The problem you currently face is partly due to the unnecessary risks you took. Running Windows with a single admin account is asking for trouble - one little glitch will cause you a lot of grief. Having a second admin account, fully tested and documented,
would let you resolve the current problem within a minute.

There is a complex process to reset an admin password. It requires either a Windows Repair CD or a Windows installation DVD. Do you have one of those?

Hi. I have a Pavilion s5257c with Windows 7 (64bit) installed. The computer had been going to blue screen and memory dump randomly for several months.

I decided to do a system restore with previously created recovery disks. Did not work and received the 0xe0ef0003 error. Tried several times and always hung-up on the 3rd recovery disk. Ordered HP recovery disks for desktop (5 disks). Have tried recovery many times, using the HP Recovery Disks and still hangs on the 3rd disk with the same error. Ran PC Doctor several times (provided with recover disk options), check HD OK, but has random memory fails (sometimes on high bit test, sometimes low bit test, sometimes checkered pattern, etc). Tried formatting the HD with Kill Drive (free version) which does a simple 0 write in formatting. Same error comes up with recovery disks after HD format (tried 2 times). Tried a Win 7 Install ISO, downloaded from internet (several times). Still cannot install Win 7 or restore PC. Same error at same stage (3rd disk) of recovery.

Yesterday I found an ISO fix from the HP download center for the 0xe0ef0003 error, to fix some problems with certain PC video configurations during the system restore process. From looks of my problem, seems I have the video config problem, but I do not know how to fix. By the way, I can no longer boot from HD because system gives error (Boot Mgr Missing).

Any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!! Thanks in advance!

    HOW TO FIX!

I ordered 3 system restore cd from HP as the system restore was not working on the computer,

I installed the3dvd...I got the 0x03f0001 message on the black screen.... Upon bootup I got the boot mgr missing of course because the 3rd (official cd from Hp) could not fully install. I ran HPdiagnostic and everything passed. I removed the memory and installed new memory. After 4 failed installs and 2 calls to HP, I was told that the computer was defective and it needed to be sent back.

I installed a new hard-drive and ran the restore cd from HP and got the message above upon boot up after the 3rd cd installed and the system rebooted. Just a reminder only keyboard and mouse was installed and I disconnected the flash ports which were located on the front of the computer. I also change the cmos battery and reset the bios to factory defaults. Still could not get those bloody windows 7 restore (offical HP) 64 bit home to install.

So after much frustration, Iinstalled an hp windows vista cd from hp from another hp that I own. GUESS WHAT MY NOW DEFECTIVE COMPUTER DIAGNOSED BY HP... ASDEFECTIVE AND WOULD NEED TO BE SENT BACKIS WORKING! WITHOUT PROBLEMS.

I DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED OEM WINDOW 7 CD and UPDATED THE SYSTEM. (NO PROBLEMS)

So Its the cd's, and those that think its a cdrom drive issue, I also replaced the cd rom with an official hp cd rom drive and I still could not get those restore cd to work.

THANKS HP, I spent 6 hours to realize that the bloody cd's that I many others have are defective.....

When I try to print from the 8400 to the hp 6122, it just ejects a blank page.  I think I messed up the software install by plugging the usb printer in first.  HP cannot tell me how to completely clear the registry entries so I can reinstall the software.  Normal uninstall and reinstall does not clear the problem. I cannot go back with system restore because I don't have a restore point that goes back far enough.  Does anyone know how I can clear all of the install entries without using system restore? Hp couldn't help me.

it doesnt do anything and I get the error0x800705aa.

What is going on? And how do I fix it so I can restore my computer to an earlier date. And why does windows 7 only store a certain number of restore dates? Is there a way to turn that off?

    DB:2.79:System Restore Error 0x800705aa xd

System Restore keeps as many restore points as will fit into the space you allow it. This is something that you can adjust yourself in the Control Panel / System.

Windows 7 also has a facility to create an image of the whole installation. Again this is something that you can (and should!) do yourself. You can use an image at any time, no matter how old it is. Check out this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-your-programs-system-settings-and-files.

DB:2.78:Error Loading Xbwg.Oko Specified Module Could Not Be Found f3

Chances are high that it is a malware file. Either you uninstalled the malware program or your antivirus/antispyware program did. In any case, a reference was left to the file in Startup. You can remove the reference by managing your Startup.

Because you had one piece of malware, the chances are also high that you had others. It would be a good idea to scan. I recommend downloading and installing MalwareBytes' Antimalware (MBAM) from
http://www.malwarebytes.org . The program is free. (There is a paid version but you don't need to buy it to remove malware.)

    Manage Startup:

    (for XP) StartRunmsconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get a dialog saying you've used
the Utility. Just tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

music files. Is there a way to install software from the backup discs? I assumed because I was in a Vista Forum . . . I am on a Windows Vista Premium Operating System.

    DB:2.77:Back Up And Restore mm

    Hi mlborgers

The backup task that you have on your disks might have got corrupted and is causing this issue. You can also backup and restore the software’s on the system. But you will not be able to install a part of the backup, it will install everything.

I recommend you try the following:
    1. Go to task scheduler (run taskschd.msc from RUN dialog OR from a command-prompt)

    2. Navigate under Task Scheduler Library-Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup folder
    3. Delete AutomaticBackup task
    4. Delete Windows Backup Monitor task
    5. Try to re-configure file backup
In case you do not find these tasks in task scheduler I, suggest doing the following:

    1. Open an elevated command-prompt
    2. cd %windir%\system32\tasks\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsBackup
    3. del AutomaticBackup
    4. del "Windows Backup Monitor"
    5. Try to re-configure file backup

DB:2.77:Time Machine Restore Specific Applications jj

When Snow Leopard is available for purchase, I plan on doing a fresh install on my Macbook. I am wondering, will my Time Machine be able to restore certain applications? I don't want to restore everything from Time Machine, only certain applications. Does Time Machine allow for this?

DB:2.77:Time Machine Restore Specific Applications jj

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

Yes, Time Machine can restore individual items, including apps. Here's a demo: Time Machine Tutorial

Time Machine can also be used to restore all your configuration, settings, apps, users, preferences, data, etc., after purchasing a new Mac, or doing an Erase and Install. See the *Erase, Install, Migrate* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

And, if your hard drive fails, it can be used to restore your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup. See the *Restore System From Backup...* section of that same Tip.

But you may want to re-think your strategy. It's usually much better to delete what you don't want, rather than, in effect, delete everything and try to pick and choose to restore what you do want.

If you're thinking of the Windoze world, where a PC will gradually slow down, and needs a periodic reinstall to clear out assorted junk and speed it back up, that's rarely the case with OSX.

While we don't know what the Snow Leopard procedure will be, usually when Apple releases a new version of OSX, all you have to do is an "Archive and Install, preserving users and settings." That moves the current OSX into a "Previous System" folder, which you can delete as soon as you're comfortable, and leaves your configuration, settings, users, etc. alone.

Perhaps if you tell us just what you're hoping to accomplish, we can provide better advice.

Hallelujah for this answer! I tried restoring a 1TB drive (that only had 250GB used) to a higher performing 500GB drive and it wouldn't happen. Then after getting a 1TB drive, I was able to restore the image. I also had to plug the external drive (with
the image on it) in, after the boot from CD completed and gave the recovery options so as not to be assigned to the C: drive. Thanks so much for your help and if you use a Western Digital drive, they give you a free download from the Acronis website which
I think can do this (larger to smaller). For the others who want to clone from a HDD to SSD (or possibly a larger HDD drive to smaller), I have found Paragon's Migrate OS to SSD 4.0 to be excellent at $20. I think Samsung SSD drives include a reducing migration

DB:2.75:How Does System Restore Work dz

    Hi Thomas,

System Restore doesn’t change your personal files, but it might remove recently installed apps and drivers.

Refer to the Microsoft KB article for more information:

Note: When you perform System Restore to restore the computer to previous state, programs and updates you installed are removed.

    DB:2.74:System Restore 1m

    Hey Peter,

Hum, did you by chancein April of 2009 do a Backup of your computer??

I'm not 100% sure, but System Restore Points are part of some Backup procedures.

    Gotta check and see.

If so, you could restore your April backup, from your Backup Software, then run System Restore (seperate program)and grab the restore point/date if you had one.

    That might work.

Hello, I am hoping the community can help. I was running Mavericks (10.9.4) on my iMac and decided to try the public beta version of of a certain new OS that cannot be mentioned on this forum. I used it for a few days and decided that it would be best to wait for the official release. I followed the directions to get Mavericks back on my iMac (use disk utility to erase drive, re-install OS X from disk utilities, and then restore from a time machine back up). The problems I am experiencing are the following: 1. After erasing the drive and attempting to re-install OS X (in disk utility - Command + "R"), it only gives me the option to re-install that certain unmentionable OS. 2. I cannot boot from online restore/back up (command, control "R"). It just boots into OS X Utilities. 3. When I restore from time machine back up (date prior to the certain unmentionable OS, and after erasing the drive) I am missing a lot of files/extensions. System Preferences are completely gone. Utilities folder has all the applications with the ghost-buster slash through them and are unable to open. Pretty much every single Apple application, extension, etc. is unusable. It also completely removed my Microsoft Office. All that shows up for those apps is "?" And I've tried it under numerous back-ups from various dates over the past 6 months. I attempted to call Apple for support, who told me to try and get it to boot from the web, but as I explained under #2 above, it won't do it. I re-installed certain unmentionable OS while I try and figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forgive me if I assume wrong, but I assume that your are trying to run system restore because something happened to your pc that you are trying to fix. One of the signs of pc infection is that interferes with the ability of system restore to function properly. If that is the case may I suggest

    Go here and download Hijackthis

    http://dsvs.org/5/HijackThis.exe

Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\\HJT\\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here.

My system is HP Pavilion executing Windows 7 prof. After a register clean with NU writing a restore point prior my system crashed. I tried to use the HP recover/restore feature and I can see multiple restore points. I can't use any because status is
"You must enable System Protection on this drive". I spent two fruitless hours with HP support with the resolution "reinstall orig. config" which of course would erase many days of software installations.

I have a recovery DVD but this seems to get me to the same point - reinstall system. I don't have an installation CD.
I can get to the command prompt and I tried "sfc /scannow" but this doesn't work either because the system responds "a repair is pending".
Is there anything I can do/try to avoid a complete re-install?

    Ken,
Thank you for your comment. I agree with your assessment of registry manipulating software, primarily in retrospect.
For the benefit of any poor sap (using System7-64 prof) that used NU 15-Defragment Registry and encountered my misfortune I would like to repeat the remedy that helped me:
    1. If you can’t install a restore point manage to get to a command prompt
    2. Go to \windows\syswow64\config
(I believe the drive may vary upon the recover software used)
    3. Review size of *.rmbak and corresponding files
    4. If *.rmbak files are significantly larger than corresponding ones, reverse the files (REN software to software.old, default to default.old, software.rmbak to software and default.rmbak to default)
    5. Reboot your system and breath relief

    g) Make sure they’re also running.

    h) To start a service, right click on it and select start.

DB:2.71:Cannot Create System Restore Points On Acer Aspire 7741 Laptop. a1

I have an Acer Aspire 7741 laptop with 4GB memory installed. I am running 64 bit Windows 7. I cannot create a system restore 'create point'. After getting the "Shadow Copy Provider has an error" message everytime that I attempt to create a system
restore point, I researched and followed the instructions I found about restarting VSS, etc., and even going to the point of re-registering the relevant components, etc. I fear that I need to re-install Windows 7, but I do not want to lose any of my files
and documents, etc. I also do not have an install CD. Is there any way to fix this blasted System Restore problem?? Any help would be extremely welcome !!

    Many thanks,
    DAVE

Run CHKDSK on each drive with the /f switch to fix any errors on the disk for starters:

    Hi,

Remove all external devices such printer, USB drives and check if you are able to boot from the DVD. If that does not help, please contact the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

Cannot installOffice 2003Service Pak 1 using theWindows Updateprocess. Initializesfine but fails to install. Also having a problem with thesystem restore on my Dell 4500 usingWindows XP HomeEdition. System restore goes through the motions but responds "unable to restore - tryanother restore point".

Personally, I would not recommend installing the Office SP via Windows/Microsoft Update. Use Office Update or better yet (if you can) download the entire SP and apply it.

    Hi Tbear,

·Do you have any security software installed on your computer?

You may try to boot the computer and try to perform a system restore from Safe mode and check if it completes successfully and post back the result.
To boot to the desktop in safe mode keep tapping F8 key during restart. Once you see the option to boot in safe mode with networking select it and press enter.

Access the link to know more about how to boot the computer in safe mode:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Hope this helps. Let us know the result.

    Thanks and Regards,

DB:2.70:Cannot Run System Restore With Norton Internet Security Installed On Windows 7 f1

Have new computer with Windows 7 and 60 day trial of Norton Internet Security. Cannot do a successful System Restore. I get this message: System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an antivirus program is running on the computer.
Temporarily disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070005) I tried turning off the Norton antivirus, antispyware and firewall, but stillget the same error message. I contacted
Norton tech support and they said I have to remove the Norton, do the System Restore and then re-install the Norton. Is this correct? Do you know of any Internet Security software that I can get that does not require uninstalling and reinstalling in order
    to run System Restore?

DB:2.70:Cannot Run System Restore With Norton Internet Security Installed On Windows 7 f1

Had the same problem this evening running Norton Internet Security and Windows7 (64 bit). The Symantec website suggests this:

    Norton 2009 product
    Start your Norton product
In the Computer pane, click Settings
    Click Miscellaneous Settings
Under Product Security, next to Norton Product Tamper Protection click the status indicator to turn it
    OFF
In the Settings window, click Apply
    Click OK

    Run Windows System Restore

    Start your Norton product
In the Computer pane, click Settings
    Click Miscellaneous Settings
Under Product Security, next to Norton Product Tamper Protection click the status indicator to turn it
    ON
In the Settings window, click Apply
    Click OK

DB:2.70:Problems With Outlook/ Cannot Click Links zx

I have been having some problems with Outlook using the email. I am getting messages that indicate due to "restrictions" placed on my account I cannot click links in email messages, and I cannot send to certain email addresses from my email accounts. I want to send or forward messages to my work address and my family addresses. These are all accounts I have sent mail to before.

I do not have any restore points besides the original one. I do not want to have to re-install everything just to get back to the previous success with Outlook.

I AM the system administrator on my single home computer. How did these "restrictions" / "permissions" get placed on my email and how do I remove them?
