What is the purpose of default gateway on local and distributed director? Is it for administrative purpose or actual data flow?

DB:5.01:Local Director And Distributed Director 3c

A Distributed Director is actually a 4000 series router and can also route traffic. The default route is there so it knows a next hop to send this traffic. It also needs this to perform certain probes to generate DRP metrics.

The LD would need a default route is if it is configured to contact a syslog server that is not on its local subnet. It would also need this for forwarding requests that originate from the backend servers.

The default routes are not used when forwarding load balancing requests

No. Traffic Director is not a Web based (Server/Client) application. You need to be on the server to run it. Secondly, TD has now ben replaced with a new Web based application called nGenius Real Time Monitor (RTM) which can be accesses via a Client. See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/cscowork/ps2803/index.html for more details on RTM.

DB:4.27:Should We Dump Local Director And Upgrade To Css? c9

We have been getting conflicting information for resolving an ongoing problem with Local Director and SSL ID "sticky." We have been plagued by dropped sessions because of the SSL ID configuration problem. CISCO documentation for release notes 4.1.1 recommends HTTP Redirection, and another recommendation from this forum recommends 23-bit stickymask. However, our network support people have been told by CISCO that 23-bit stickymask doesn't work with Local Director, and apparently not that many support people are familiar enough with Local Director to resolve this ongoing problem. Given the fact that MS IE 5 and above holds the market share for browsers, and it is known that IE randomly changes the SSL key (sesison id), it would seem that configuring LD for sticky using SSL ID is a bad solution. Are there real differences between Local Director and CSS? Please help - this is quite annoying.

    Thanks

DB:4.27:Should We Dump Local Director And Upgrade To Css? c9

Reading through the release notes for 4.2.4, there seems to be a few open caveats with SSL sticky. One is that SSL sticky only works with IE 5.5. Another is that when each real server has the same IP address but different ports - LD will send SSL packets from originating client with same Session ID to a different real server.

In any event, it does seem that HTTP Redirect is the way to go to get around the problems with SSL sticky.

I have a PIX with static's to virtual IP's on my local director. The PIX's embryonic connection limit is 50.

My probelm is that the Local Director is sometimes showing a very large number of syn's and the pix shows none.

From what I have read the PIX will increment the embyonic limit when it recieves a SYN and will not decrement until it gets the ACK from the Client.

The Local Director seems to Proxy the SYN and respond to the Client - this would pass through the PIX to the Client - the Client would respond - the PIX would recieve the ACK and decrement the Embrionic.

At the same time, The Local Director sends the SYN to the WEB Server and if the server does not respond the Local Director increments it's SYN count.

Could this be why the PIX does not have a high number of SYN's and the Local Director does.

Can anyonetell me exactly what the SYNGUARD feature in the Local Director does - it claims that it "protects" the real server - what does that mean - how does it protect it.

I am correct in saying that the Local Director answers syn's on behalf of a server.

DB:3.95:Does The Local Director Answer Syns On Behalf Of A Server. mx

the local director will respond to the SYN on behalf of the real server if it needs more information to do the loadbalancing.

For example if you have cookie-sticky or loadbalancing based on url.

Regarding SYNGUARD, I don't know exactly.

    I'll do some research.

However, I would suggest to ask this question separately so the subject

You can place the CE on the internet router for both RPC (wccp 99) and transparent forward proxy (web-cache) without needing an LD. Make sure the internet router is heavily protected with good access lists. Use the authentication string for WCCP so the router will not be spoofed. The router config would be something like:

    int s0

    ip wccp web-cache redirect out

    int e0

    ip wccp 99 redirect out

    1) Create Local Connection in CS3 and output as projector

    2) Create seperate file for other connection in CS3
    3) Save 2nd file as Flash 8 since director doesn't understand

    4) import file from step 3 into director and export projector
    5) Flash is now unable to communicate with the same file that
it could before it was wrapped in the director file
-- Also tried using zinc as the wrapper with identical
    results

Conclusions something about how CS3 is creating the Flash 8
files breakes localconnect for other applcations which can deal
with flash 8. Any help or even if other people are seeing the same

connect to communicate with a director file created using Flash 8
opened it in CS3 and simply republished the projector. The local

must be that local connect does not work outside of flash 9

You can either load 2.3.1i or you can also download the latest version 2.3.2i file from the same location: CSPM-v232i.exe

You will have to install 2.3.2i using the license diak extracted from the 2.3.1i zip file.

DB:3.58:Using The Local Director Alias Ip Address Command zp

no, the local director will not route. there are two ways to make this work.

    1

the router on the front side of the local director must be configured with a secondary ip address from the real server subnet plus add the alias command

    or

    2

use the alias command, plus each real server must be configured with a static ARP entry. the ARP entry is for the ip address of the servers configured default gateway and the MAC address of the router interface.

    DB:3.58:Role Of Directors 1x

    Hi all,
I did read about why directors are needed and how they help in seperating the local traffic from external traffic etc. If we have a Director installed, when an external user is connecting to an internal user, does the signalling and media go
through this server or only through the Edge Server. If my understanding is correct the signalling will go through the Edge Server to the Director and then to the Front-End Server?Does director ever come into picture once the user is authenticated and the
    front-end server is identified?

    DB:3.58:Role Of Directors 1x

    Hi,
The Director role is there to provide a layer of security between your Edge Server/s and the Front End (FE) servers in your pool, and also take the AD authentication work off the FE servers.
Once a pool is identified by the director, SIP traffic will traverse directly between the Edge Server and the FE server as all the Director does is provides a SIP 301 REDIRECT to the Lync Pool after the client initially hits it.
Hope this helps answer your question.Justin Morris | Consultant | Modality Systems

    DB:3.58:Local Director Powered Off? mm

    Hello,

My company recently purchased a Local Director 417, we don't have any prior experience with LD's and a simple, I think, question has come up. If the LD is powered off will it pass any traffic at all? The obvious answer seems to be no, but we do have other network devices that when powered off will still pass traffic, so as obvious as it seems I guess it is worth asking the question.

    Thanks,

Actually we do have several devices, packet shapers, that, when powered off, will allow traffic to pass through two designated ports.

    Very nice feature.

This is probably too late for you Alex, but just in case anyone with the same problem hits this page looking for a solution:

    - ssh to the UCSD, log in as shelladmin

    - select the option to stop all services

    - wait a minute

    - select the option to start all services

    - wait a bit longer, select  the option to check the services status from time to time

    - when all services are shown as "running", the system is still starting up so it's possible you don't get the login screen yet when connection to the GUI

    - as soon as you do get the login screen, you should be able to log in.

DB:3.51:Vplex Practice Test -- A Few Doubts aa

    hello experts,

I'd be obliged if you could answer for me with a brief explanation, a few questions I had about the practice test..

    1. A customer experienced performance degradation on a local volume early this week. You have been assigned to investigate. Based on the output below,

where would you start your diagnostic efforts?

    Director director-2-1-B: 62 days, 23 hours, 0 minutes, 50 seconds.

    Director director-2-1-A: 62 days, 23 hours, 9 minutes, 48 seconds.

    Director director-1-1-B: 2 days, 20 hours, 42 minutes, 27 seconds.

    Director director-1-1-A: 2 days, 20 hours, 42 minutes, 23 seconds.

    A. Site 1: director 1 and 2

    B. Site 1: director 1 only

    C. Site 2: director 1 and 2

    D. Site 2: director 1 only

any document that talks about the relation of director uptime and performance degradation on the VPLEX?

    2.

VPLEX detects AC power loss on both of its power zones. Besides not allowing configuration changes on the local cluster, what will happen if the AC source is lost, and the VPLEX enters the Ride-out power phase?

    A. All front-end I/Os are quiesced; after 20 seconds, if the AC source is restored, I/O automatically resumes and configuration change is allowed again

    B. Mirror rebuild and migrations are paused; I/Os are quiesced and Vaulting initiates

    C. All I/Os are quiesced to prepare for vaulting; after 20 seconds, if the AC source is restored, I/O automatically resumes and configuration changes are allowed again

    D. Mirror rebuild and migrations are paused; after 20 seconds, if the AC source is restored, the paused rebuild and migrations resume and configuration changes are allowed again.

Should the answer not be B? the test marked it wrong, though.

    3.

You are configuring a single engine VPLEX Metro to support both local and distributed volumes. The VPLEX will utilize 10gig WAN-COM modules in a bridged configuration.

According to EMC best practices, what is the minimum number of subnets and IPs required?

    A. 3 subnets; 5 IPs

    B. 3 subnets; 7 IPs

    C. 5 subnets; 15 IPs

    D. 7 subnets; 15 IPs

any pirticular document that I can refer to, to look at bridged WAN COM IP connectivity details for VPLEX?

    thanks a lot ..

My question is this.. Say a user has full rights to a cube thus he is able to see all the sales data for our company say this user is the director of sales.  Now the director has sales managers that work for him, and the managers have brokers that work for them.
Now then.. I have given the director full rights, and I have given the sales managers and brokers read only to there dim's of the cube this is all working when they create there own reports or refresh a existing report.  but if the director creates a excel report and sends that report out to the field without picking the sales manager/brokers individually in the page header of the excel pivot. Each user is able to see everything that the director was able to see that is until the user clicks the refresh button.  Then and only then it hides the rest of the data. Is there a way to stop this without having the director make 40 saves for the same report?
I guess u can say i really have a excel caching problem with all the data going out.

    example:
    director makes a report:
    sales by customer, by month
*all data shows on the report*
saves the file to a local share.

manager A logs on sees the report downloads it, opens it and sees all data for manager B because the director didn't do a sales by manager, by customer, by month because the director thought that the cube only shows Manager A's managers A info not A and B.

I will gladly explain anything else on this problem.. i really am at a loss on what to do.

The LD is a bridge but does not participate in spanning tree - it will pass BPDUs transparently. Try turning off portfast on ports connected to the LD.

    Hello everyone,

    Director.

In the case of using HTTP probe on Local Director.

    Local Director: 417, Version 4.2.5

I want to know the following.

1: How many times/seconds the Local Director waits an ack

(acknowledge) from real server for a HTTP probe request

(HTTP HEAD) before the Local Director determines the real

    server to fail ?

That is, How many times/seconds the Local Director can

wait an ack from real server for one HTTP probe request ?

2: How many times the Local Director retry(re-send) HTTP

probe request to the real server if the real server does

not respond it before the Local Director determines the

    real server to fail ?

I think the retry(re-send) count depends on "threshold"

    count of "probeconfig" command.

It means the "threshold" count of "probeconfig" command

is same meaning of retry count.

    Is my understanding correct ?

DB:3.44:Director Pool Or Just Two Standalone Directors?? zd

What is the point of a Director Pool? Surely all it just does authentication and re-direction (or SIP pass through for external traffic).
What is the difference between creating two standalone directors, with local SQL Express instancesand load balancing them using DNS as opposed to creating a Director pool, which I am guessing uses a shared SQL instance?
One of the benefits of a director is detailed as a layer of defence from external DOS attacks. If thatis the case, I would rather it hit my director (with local SQL Express Instance) as opposed to a shared instance on my production SQL cluster.
    Thanks
    Mark

DB:3.44:Director Pool Or Just Two Standalone Directors?? zd

    Mark

I assume you are talking Lync rather than OCS as you refer to DNS load balancing. Since Lync was introduced there is no longer a need for a backend DIR pool database,
the only SQL databases are the local XDS replicated databases hence you only see an SQL Express install whether it's a pool or two standalone servers. This reduces costs as you don't need the extra SQL licensing now. Additionally, the comment about the Edge
traffic hitting a shared SQL instance (which would only apply to OCS) is not really correct as the traffic only ever hits the DIRectors, the SQL database is there just to make DB lookups so the exzternal client traffic doesn't go near it.

If you deploy the DIRs as standalone then you should be able to use weighted SRV records to failover between DIRs. This will work for internal authentication requests,
but I don't believe it will help for external Edge based requests. If you want resilience Edge comms then you need a pool.

The DIR pool only supports a couple of the more minor WEB services (client filter, device update) whihc I think you can host on the
FEs anyway, so there may be an argument for not requiring a load balancer for the web traffic. This means deploying the two as a pool rather than stand alone is even easier, so less of an argument for not making them a pool.

    [JE EDIT]
The final comment I added above (in italics) regarding whether you skip having an LB for for the DIR pool is probably not quite right. When the DIRs
are involved in Edge services, the DIRs end up issuing Web service tickets as part of the authentication process so are inherently involved in Web based services hence you would need to support WEB services on the DIRs, which means you need an HLB in place
if you run an Enterprise pool. This doesn't change any of the previous comments though relating to seperate or pooled DIRs. Jeff Schertz has a good blog on Web services and DIRs.

DB:3.40:Local Director 416 Seamless Real Changes kj

There is a well known problem of keeping a session bound to one physical real server after the session is setup on HTTP (open) transport and later moved to HTTPS (secure) transport protocol. In this case, the HTTP redirection should be setup at the application level. The server can send a redirect (either a 302 or an HREF embedded in the actual web page itself) to HTTP, so no load balancing takes place at the Local Director. Another possible solution would be to switch to HTTPS sooner, and perform the session opening encrypted. This is preferred also for encrypting the login username and password. If you keep the whole session running via HTTPS, the generic sticky can ensure that the same server will be used for a client. The second solution and configuration is described in this document. The HTTP traffic is limited to first contact with the site (the client can type simple site name to address bar). When reaching Local Director, the browser receives a 302 redirect message with the URL configured, including the HTTPS tag, so there is the complete name of the server to reach. The session (on application level) is built from the beginning with the secure server (the real servers do not handle HTTP at all). Tthe session continues with the unique server name, so it is always reaching the same.

    DB:3.38:Local Director Issue kk

    Perry,

Keep in mind the LDIR is a L2 device, but it uses NAT for load balancing. When connections go to a vip, the LDIR NAT only changes the destination address (to that of a real) after it makes a load balancing decision. On the reply the LDIR changes the source ip to that of the vip.

Also, you state, "This is why it is required that the LD be the gateway for all servers behind it". The LDIR should never be the gateway for the servers behind it. It will not know how to route the packets. The gateway should always be the router in front of the LDIR. The LDIR is unlike the CSS in this aspect. The LDIR cannot perform true L3 functions.

    I hope this helps.

Does somebody to know when ASLB or MNLP for Local Director will be accesible on platform cat6500 with Sup2/PFC2/MSFC2

As I know there is no support for them on such cat6500 yet.

    Actually I'm using:

LocalDirector 430 with soft version 4.2.4

    WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE/WS-F6K-PFC2 with CatOS 7.4(2)

    WS-F6K-MSFC2 with IOS 12.1(13)E2

and can't configure nor "redirection assist" on LD nor "casa" on router

    Hi,

i would like to ask if CSS 11501 (software 8.20) is still the replacement hardware for local director 417?  currently we use this local director to load balance http and https traffic using a flat network implementation meaning virtual IP is in the same netwoork as the physical server.  will CSS 11501 can support this implementation?

    Current Local Director setup example

    web server virtual IP   10.10.10.1

    real server ip 1   10.10.10.2

    real server ip 2   10.10.10.3

local director is well before my time, so I can't comment on those and their official replacement.

I'd say you're better off going straight to ACE modules or appliances.

They're the latest generation of Cisco's load balancers.

    We're very happy w/ our ACE-20 modules.

Hi!, I have a question: Is there any way using CISCO Local Director instead of WebLogic Clustering feature ? because that our production folks insist on using "hardware" solution. We us iPlanet Web server + WebLogic Application Server in our application. Very appreciate if anyone can answer my question.

    DB:3.38:Local Director ps

Yes, the session data is always maintained by the WL cluster using a primary
and secondary server (for in mem rep). AFAIK The apache plug in is just
responsible for interpreting the cookie or URL to determine who the primary
(and if necessary secondary) servers are, and routing to that server, so it
does not matter which instance of apache that the request goes to (since
without the sticky options, the local director will not guarantee that the
request will always go to the same apache server).

    Hi,

In the last scenario you mentioned with multiple Apache proxies, does the
WLS in-memory-replication maintain the session if one of the Apache proxies
goes down? In other words, is the session data maintained by the cluster
when the local director routes the request to a different Apache proxy?

    "Cameron Purdy" cpurdy@tangosol.com wrote:
Not yet. First, I do not believe that there is a hardware load balancer
that "understands" WL stickiness, especially WRT failover. Only WL's
plug-ins understand that, so right now you must use them.

I expect that WL will eventually be able to route a request to the
    "right"
server if it shows up at the "wrong" server, meaning that eventually each
    WL
instance in a cluster could be used as the front-end of the cluster, so a
hardware solution could work very well for non-session requests (where it
doesn't matter which WL instance gets the requests) and for session
    requests
(where it must go to the "right" server) it will re-route automatically.

Right now I suggest using NAS to front the cluster; it appears to be the
best solution. If you use a hardware load balancer, then a group of
    Apache
servers on Linux would be as good or better of a solution to front the
cluster (i.e. load balancer distributes to a set of Apache servers that
    are
    working independently of each other).

We want to set up web collaboration for fault tolerance in cold stand-by mode, where in 1 CCS would be active and if the same fails the subsequent calls would be forwarded to the 2nd CCS. The documents say that this could be achieved if both these routing CCS' are behind a local director. 'Local Director' as I understand is a part of Cisco's content product suite, and Cisco has declared EOL/EOS for this product. Could anyone throw more light on this issue and possibly enlighten on which router/gateways have this feature built in. Better solutions/work arounds are welcome.

I have a local director 416 with 2 real servers. I would like to send all traffic to 1 server and if it fails to switch over to the secondary server. The way I see to do it is to use weighted load balancing and set the weight of the 2nd server to zero. But if the primary server fails what will happen since the secondary server has a weight of zero.

DB:3.37:Local Director Load Balancing Question 33

Not being a Cisco employee, I guess I can't define what "proper" is, but with the backup command, you don't need to play with the weights at all.

You just bind the primary real server to the virtual, then assign a backup to the primary. The backup server does not get directly bound to the virtual, so the only way it's going to get any traffic is if the primary server is down.

Hi, got an interesting problem when implementing the HTTP redirection method of session persistance or stickiness when balancing a couple of web servers on a Local Director 416. The session persistance works fine but it looks like one of the two servers is getting all the traffic rather than balancing accross the two. The servers are equally spec'd and when it comes to the predictor setting for the virtual, I'm just using the defaults i.e. leastconns/roundrobin. Is there a better predictor setting to use?? Any input would be appreciated.

The “loaded” argument has worked well. Take note that this requires a value to be set with the “weight” command. It gives a specific amount of traffic to one, and then moves to the other.

Am I doing this in vain. Are there any ways to do remote management of the LD or can it easily be scripted. Thanks.

    DB:3.28:Local Director Remote Management c3

you cannot SET values for the Local Director through SNMP. Just GET them.

There used to be a GUI for the LD, that works up to version 3.x. It no longer works in version 4.x. The name for it is CVS and it can take servers out of service. It does it by telnetting to the LD and issueing commands.

Also, the LD support Dynamic Feedback Protocol (DFP) which is a protocol that allows the LD to talk to an agent application (installed on the server) and can dynamically adjust the server weight according to load.

    Hope that helps,

    A few questions:-

    1. I understand that this can be used to change the source IP address for real server oubound connections. Please confirm if this is just for connections that are initiated by the stipulated real servers.

    2. I have a group of servers already being load balanced by a virtual using port 80 and want to use the static command to change the source IP address for connections that are initiated by the real servers to port 80. Could some just provide a few lines of sample config for this. Many Thanks

DB:3.27:Using The Local Director Static Command 8d

Yes, for outbound connections that the real server makes (not in response to a user accessing the virtual server), the IP address is translated to the virtual IP address identified by the static command. If the real_ip exists as a real server, then the outbound connection is counted toward the number of connections for that real server (that is, it will affect load balancing); otherwise, the connection is only translated and does not affect load balancing.

I am not sure about the static configuration for a particular port. Anyone else would like to comment?

Originally I thought it was because I had to deploy a new vCloud Network and Security appliance as my original vShiled Manager only had a 8GB hard drive and so did not have enough free space to download the upgrade files even with the maintenance fix.

However, after further investigation I noticed that after the upgrade from vCloud Director 1.5 to vCloud director 5.1 under the System Manage Monitor vSphere Resources Datastores Datastore Clusters tab the local datastores of my hosts were enabled, which they were not prior to the upgrade.

Because the local datastores were enabled vCloud Director was trying to deploy the vShield Edges to them and then failing to do so as they were not accessible by all hosts.

After disabling the local datastores all edge gateways were able to be deployed and the vApps powered on.

As I could not find any information out there on the web about this I thought I create this post to let people know.

After raising a support case with VMware it turns out the issues is that we did not have a storage profile defined.

vCloud Director 5.1 uses storage profiles and as we did not have one it created a new All profile, as a result it was using local and shared storage.

This also has the side effect of vCloud emailing alerts about Datastores not visable to vCloud director.

So if anyone else has these issues create / update your storage profiles.

DB:3.19:Port Security With Load Balancers And Fault Tolerant Nic Configurations dp

    Hi All,

I have a primary and secondary switch set up with multiple vlans on each and trunking between them. I also have a primary local director bridging between two of the vlans on the primary switch with a failover local director doing the same on the secondary switch.

All hosts have two NICs in fail-over mode. The primary NIC is connected to the primary switch and the failover to the secondary switch.

I would like to implement Port Security for the host ports.

Are there any prolems with the Local Director being a bridge or the switching of the IP address from the primary nic to the failover nic when the primary fails which would cause the port to shut down?

    Thank you much,

    Art

I don't think that the Local Director should be a problem. However, I have not tried configuring port security with LD. For configuration, refer:

Hello all. I just recently purchased a local director from a 3rd party network management company. I am hoping to find a little more documentation about setting this up. I have gone through the sites including Cisco's. Still I can't find much more than the high level tech docs around what it is and what it can do. Is there a book I casn purchase or a really good support site that has this covered? Please let me know. Thanks.

I have to implement Load balancing for several servers that require SSL, which means all SSL connections should terminate on Web server farm. I'm thinking of using Local Director. One problem is to be sure that clients will always get the same server while completing, for example, online form, and I know that this could be done with sticky option in SSL configuration for LD. What I'm really interesting is performance. Should anyone have experience with LD+SSL, any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks,

    Hello,

first - you can use as LocalDirector as ArrowPoint (11000 Cisco switches) well. There's, of course, another options (f5, alteon, foundry, etc). Go

http://www.vegan.net/lb/ - there's mailing list for using load balancing technologies - i'm personally don't use the SSL on our ArrowPoint - but i've seen a big discussion about it there.

    Hope it helps.

    Hi all,

I have configured the local director to load balance several web sites on two real servers. One of these sites is required to be configured in backup mode.

For some reason the local director is unable to detect the site has gone down (by stopping the site to update the web content), therefore not directing requests to the backup real server.

I am using IIS 5.0, since its quite popular out there, has anyone experienced a similar situation and if so, how did you resolve it?

    thanks

DB:3.16:Local Director Unable To Detect A Failed Web Site j8

Your problem is based in the Operating system, not the Local Director. The LD is a layer 3 device. Microsoft put their application architecture together different from the Unix world, ie: Any ip address bound to a MS box is answered for by the OS - not the application (IIS in this case) If IIS is hosed up the OS will still answer for the IP you have bound to the NIC of the OS - the OS does not care at layer 3 that you want a higher level reply - LD does its availability checking at Layer 3 - the OS layer for MS. In the Unix world when an application is bound to a port - ie: Apache to port 80, then the apache deamon answers for that ip/port - not the OS - Apache panics and it will not respond at Layer 3 - the OS could be fine, but the LD will know that ip/port is not responding and will take the appropriate actions by your LD config.

Check out the httpprobe feature of the LD - it lets you test for a file in a URL inside the LD.

    Cheers

    Hi All,

I want the user who creating vApp in the vCloud director should automatically add in to the local admin of the VM. How can i achieve it.

I don't have problem in using vCenter Orchestrator or power cli. Please suggest....

    Regards,

    Karthi

DB:3.16:Adding User In To Local Admin fc

you'd have to use something outside vCloud Director. vCD does not pass any sort of parameter you can use to know 'who' is creating the VM during customization. Now you could write a 'call out' post-customization script, which could get details from some remote server. Remote server replies back with details based on Hostname or IP or something specific to the system, then you do some actions based on that response.

The other way is to do a blocking task, this would be an API based call out to Orchestrator, orcehstrator can gather details and then call in to the guest OS with the admin password to perform actions.

there are many ways to do this, but which path you choose is up to you.

if you want more specific help on how to code this, I'd suggest asking in the forums for those specific products.

I use LD 416's for internet web site load balancing. works great. I'm looking to load balance some intranet web sites and some DCOM or COM+ servers. Will LD balance COM+/DCOM? Clients are connected at 10/100 and servers are at 1000. Wont the LD be a bottleneck in this scenario? I looked at Accelerated Server Load Balancing since we have a 6500 series but we have a SUP2/MSFC2/PFC2 and it says that it only works with SUP1/MSFC1/PFC1. What are my options ?

DB:3.16:Internal Load Balancing. With Local Director? pm

I don't konw what COM+ or DCOM servers are, but

if it's TCP/IP traffic, there should be no problem.

The LD's will be bottle-necks only if the throughput does

exceed 400 meg/sec. The LD's can have GigabitEthernet

    cards.

Have you considered IOS-SLB which runs on the 6500's

We are upgrading our backbone from a single 6509 with dual sups (CatOS) to 2 6509E chassis with sup 720's running in native IOS. In the old network I used a local director and had ASLB configured in the CatOS for our 2 webservers. Given the speed of the sup 720's should I just use the SLB within the native IOS on the new sup 720's. Is there a sticky command in the IOS? The local director provided the virtual address for 2 Peoplesoft webservers. There are about 1500 PeopleSoft users but no more than 250 using it at any one time. If the SLB of IOS is enough can you point me to some example configurations to set this up.

    DB:3.16:Local Director 13

I think using ios slb is a good option in your new setup.

IOS SLB uses the old CSM commands.

So, if you can find CSM configuration, they also work with ios slb.

Here is a link to a basic example with 2 servers and and a virtual server.

Here is another example with HTTP probes.

I understand it is a feature of 6500 Series switches that they can be configured to send the first packet for a destination to a Local Director first for a decision. After the decision has been made by the Local Director "once only" the 6500 routes packets to that destination, bypassing the Local Director. This can take a significant load off the Local Director.

    Q1) Is my understanding correct?

Q2) Can resilience be built into such a

I've been searching around for SNMP configuration information when including IBM Director and have been running a bit in circles. I was able to installed IBM Director level-2 and get the correct communicaiton, but the installation documentation says that you need newer net-snmp libraries than what is included in esx 3.0.1 as well as configure a director snmp subagent. However, the snmp libraries in esx are modified for the vmware specific mibs and I can't figure out how which snmpd.conf file to edit for what and how the master agentx is configured or called, etc.

This is basically what I've been doing to Install Director

-Config snmpd for autostart and edit snmpd.conf for basic settings

-Increase COS Memory via VC to 512MB

    -mount 5.10.3 director cd

    -cd /mnt/cdrom/director/agent/linux/i386/FILES/

    -/opt/ibm/director/bin/twgstop

-/opt/ibm/director/bin/cfgsecurity \[we config security diff than defaults]

    -/opt/ibm/director/bin/twgstart

enable snmp access and trap forwarding for linux

    -download net-snmp 5.4

    -./configure --with-defaults

    -make

    -make installlibs

edit /etc/init.d/dacimlist and uncomment below lines

    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib

    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

edit /etc/init.d/dasnmp and uncomment below lines

    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib

    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

    create /usr/local/share/snmp/snmpd.conf

    -add basic settings

    restart cimlistener

    /etc/init.d/dacimlist start

    restart dir agentx

    /etc/init.d/dasnmp stop

    /etc/init.d/dasnmp start

This installs director and configures the firewall and all CIM information is working correctly. SNMP is working without the vmware addition (so you can't browse for vm's etc), but only if you run snmpd as well as dasnmp.

Does anyone know how to correctly install IBM Director?

Johny is correct! LDIR should bridge anything that is not destined to the vip unless the secure is enabled. If secure is enabled the only traffic that will pass through the LDIR is the traffic destined for it. I would recommend you open up a case with the TAC.
