Getting crash on startup. At first, Firefox started to crash when i tued to save anything, day later - startup crashes. Sometimes it starts but immediately crashes. Ive tried reinstalling with fully deleting all the files and registry cleaned up. Before the crashes came up i was using Firefox 9, after it started crushing ive tried updating, than reinstalling to version 10...

Sorry for the interruption, was busy. Ive cleaned all the rules for Firefox from the firewall, and i aint using any antiviruses. All that had no effect. Also ive fullchecked my computer with half of the malware programs from the list above. Found couple minor viruses, deleting which hasnt had any effect to the Firefox performance. Gonna continue with other programs left in short time, this checking takes a lot of time.

Try to rename the cert8.db file in the Firefox profile folder to cert8.db.old or delete the cert8.db file to remove intermediate certificates that Firefox has stored.

If that helped to solve the problem then you can remove the renamed cert8.db.old file.

Otherwise you can rename (or copy) the cert8.db.old file to cert8.db to restore the previous intermediate certificates.

Firefox will automatically store intermediate certificates when you visit websites that send such a certificate.

If that didn't help then remove or rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) as well.

Are you using the Google website as the startup home page?

A possible cause is a problem with the doodles that Google is currently using on its main search page.

It is probably easiest to choose a different home (startup) page like about:home or use the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar to initiate the searches for now.

You can also try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.

You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Check to see if the crash happens in safe mode

If updating software didn't work or if Firefox crashes on startup, use the steps below to test whether the crash happens in Firefox Safe Mode or not and then follow the instructions in the recommended articles.
Note: The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Consider using it before going though a lengthy troubleshooting process.

At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the Help menu and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.... Firefox will start up with the Firefox Safe Mode dialog.
Note: You can also start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while starting Firefox.
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, press the button Start in Safe Mode.

After Firefox starts in Safe Mode, test for your problem.
The crash still happens in Safe Mode

If your crash still happens in Safe Mode, it is not being caused by an extension, theme or hardware acceleration. See if the Latest Firefox issues article includes a solution and, if it doesn't, try to get help with your crash ID.
The crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode

If your crash doesn't happen in Safe Mode, it is most likely because of an extension, theme or hardware acceleration.

Follow the steps in Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems to determine the cause.

    Check your hardware
    Check your RAM for errors

If Firefox crashes repeatedly, check your RAM for errors using for instance the following tool, Memtest86+.

Try to delete or rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old).

If that doesn't help then rename the cert8.db file in the Firefox profile folder to cert8.db.old or delete the cert8.db file to remove intermediate certificates that Firefox has stored.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

Hmm, the crash id you gave doesn't seem to be working. Let's try to diagnose here without it.

What I'll ask you to do first, is to update your graphics driver. Out of date graphics software can sometimes cause weird crashes with newer versions of Firefox. If you read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers, it gives you directions for the various graphics manufacturers on how to update your drivers.

If after updating your graphics drive, Firefox 11 is still crashing, I'm going to ask you to start Firefox in Safe Mode. Sometimes extensions can trigger crashes, and testing with Safe Mode will help eliminate that from the equation.

Let me know how these steps work for you. The Firefox crashes also provides some help as well.

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes article.

If after following the advice in that article you're still experiencing issues, then you can perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID.

Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View Arrange Icons by Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Hi Spirax, if your new profile works after a restart or two, you may want to start back up in your old profile and use the Reset feature. This is a lot easier than manually copying data to your new profile, although that is another option.

Oh... if you are trying to restore a previously crashed session instead of starting up to your home page, please make a backup of these files in your currently active Firefox profile folder:

    sessionstore.js
    sessionstore.bak

You can copy them to your Documents folder for future reference.

To find those files from within a running instance of Firefox, use either:

    Help Troubleshooting Information
type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Then look for the "Show Folder" button.

To find those files when you cannot run Firefox, open a "Windows Explorer window (e.g., Windows Key + E) and paste this into the address bar:

    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Then click into the most recently modified folder you find.

Backing up these files will preserve your list of windows and tabs from your last session for future mining.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

    https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools Add-ons Extensions Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Firefox was working fine yesterday, but on coming into work today it crashes on Startup. It also crashes on Startup in safemode. I was using Firefox 6.0.2, and have now updated to 7.0.1 but this has not fixed the issue. I have run windows update to make sure windows is up to date, which did not fix the issue, and I am currently running a full virus scan.

    DB:3.73:Firefox Crashes mk

With luck there will be a two pronged approach to the fix.

Oracle ( ? maybe IBM) will fix anything in their software that causes the problem. If the problem goes away in firefox 3.6 but is present in Firefox 7 it indicates a regression problem with Firefox, and hopefully Firefox developers will be able to track down and fix that.

There is also a registry hack as a workaround, as i mentioned above; but the majority of users will probably not want to try that, or in a corporate environment will need the IT department to consider that.

    P.S.
possibility this may crash Firefox 8.0b1 but could show as a hang or crash; not caught by the crash reporter, possibly with the Event Log showing Faulting module name: mozmolt0.dll

    Hello Callum,

Since a few days we have a lot of crashes with Trusteer Rapport. If you have this program, try to disable it and see if that stops the crashing.

You can stop Rapport using Start Menu Programs Trusteer Rapport Stop Rapport

You can ask their helpdesk when an updated version of their product will be made available or, if you don't need this software, uninstall it.

Thanks for the quick reply - did not completely help in my case, although now I can at least use Firefox by shutting down the Oracle ESSO. Interestingly, it's not enough to just start FF first - if ESSO is started after, FF will crash as soon as you try to browse to anything or even select a menu item. Registry edit seems to have had no effect - maybe things are different on Win7.
