i looked at the user reviews which were 16 reviews with a rating of 3.7/5.0. If it were me, I would pass. It only comes with a 5 year warranty, look for something with a lifetime warranty. Hey Everyone,

I Bought a MacBook ealier this year (no problems with it so far) and I got 2 (1gb RAM each) from newegg.

I am on the process of buying one of the newest MacBook Pros, to replace my MacBook (I am selling it to my dad).

I was wondering if I can swap the memory sticks between the Macbook to the MacBook Pro?

That way I will leave my dad with a 1gb ram MB and I get a 2gb ram MBP, without having to buy any extra memory.

Is it possible? if not, can you point me to some good memory for the MBP?

    Thanks!

    Hi all,
I'm thinking about upgrading my Macbook Pro 3,1's RAM to 4GB (since an 8GB kit'd be about $300-400) and I can get 4GB RAM Kit for the MBP for $54.00, 4GB's the obvious choice. I'd also be able to take the 2GB from the computer (2x1GB) and use it somewhere else.

However, I noticed that the newest models use 800mhz DDR3, and the older models get DDR2 667, and then there is a 1066mhz DDR3. Would I be able to use DDR3 1066mhz in a 3,1 and would there be a considerable difference from the 667 and 800?

    DB:3.21:Ram For Macbook Pro 17 3,1 3k

I have the same model MBP as you (17 inch 3,1) and I can tell you that my MBP uses 667 MHz DDR2 RAM. I highly doubt that it will work with the DDR3 RAM.

When I upgraded my MBP from 2GB to 4GB a couple years ago, I took the older memory modules and upgraded an IBM ThinkPad to 2GB and it is still working fine with that memory.

DB:3.18:Ram Question: Oem + Oem = Matching Pairs? ax

    Hi,

It's been a while since I upgraded RAM, so this matching pairs concept is new to me.

A friend has the same model MBP as I do and is upgrading her RAM. According to a reliable Apple reseller, she could get 4GB (2x2GB) to max out the addressable RAM @ 3GB. If she does this, she'd have a spare 1GB stick. I also have 1GB RAM in my MBP and an empty slot. Could I just buy her old OEM 1GB and install that, or is there something more to this "matching pairs" concept?

Alternatively, could I simply buy a 1GB stick designed for my MBPs and get 2GB or do I have to buy them in matched sets?

    Thanks,
    Wardoggie

DB:3.18:Ram Question: Oem + Oem = Matching Pairs? ax

Thanks shadyron I meant to put that in my post, Halloween made me crazy for candy! The RAM between two machine are likely to be the same if the memory is originally Apple RAM. So read the label for Latency and voltage specs, to verify.

Since it's a friend they should let you install it into your Mac and see if there's any issues. If it works give them money if it doesn't then they can sell it on eBay or Craigslist.

It's not a matter of weather the RAM will work in the Mac... It's a matter of some issues that may arise do to the miss matched RAM. Here are some symptoms to watch out for after the RAM install. If the Mac displays any of these issues after installing the RAM then I would pass on the deal.

    1. Sporadic beachballs

    2. Mac freezes occasionally or constantly

    3. Kernel Panics (You will get messages associated with this if it occurs)

    4. Mac will not boot

    5. Cannot complete an OSX installation or software update

    6. New amount of RAM does not show in System Profiler

These symptoms are not binding to just RAM problems so it's important for troubleshooting to make sure that these issues do not exist prior to installing the new RAM. If they occur after RAM install then take it out and replace with original RAM and retest the Mac.

POST back and let us know...

I have a 2010 MBP 13 in. I am considering upgrading the HHD to SSD or should I just upgrade the HHD in size. I am not a gamer and don't work with media. I primarily use my MBP for school, surfing the web, music download, and minor photo editing. Also, is there a need to upgrade RAM? I am being told not to. If I am advised to upgrade I will be upgrading from a 250gb HHD. Note: Any and all advice is appreciated.

    DB:3.14:Should I Upgrade My 2010 Mbp 13 To Ssd? d7

8 GB of RAM is cheap enough now where it would be rude not to upgrade. An SSD is almost always a worthwhile purchase, despite what anyone says. However, for your use, it wouldn't be worth the investment. I would recommend the 750 GB Seagate Momentus XT. This is a "hybrid" disk, combining a traditional platter hard drive with a small, 8 GB SSD that acts as cache. The SSD stores the files that are accessed most often, providing much faster access. If OS X is your only operating system, after a few reboots, your machine can boot just about as quickly as a standard SSD because the drive is "learning" your usage patterns. The Momentus XT is a bit more expensive than a standard hard drive (about US$130), but it's a great compromise if you need more space but don't fancy shelling out $300+ on a 512 GB SSD.

    Hello everyone,
I read somewhere (on a review possibly) that the newer MBP lack the problems that many are seeing, such as the whine, etc. This may or may not be true, but is it worth it to have apple upgrade the RAM or something to attemp to get a new model instead of an earlier one? Will upgrading RAM force apple to build a new machine? To specify "is it worth it," I have found RAM for much much cheaper online, as I am sure many of have as well. Thank you in advance for any help.

Changing a parameter on the config page for your laptop adds days to the build but you get a newer one. I ordered a stock one and got a week 12, my mom ordered extra ram and got a week 17. Who gives a ****, they're all the same, both equally warm, but the new SMC update solves this partially.

You can upgrade your HDD but, as already pointed out, it requires considerable disassembly. Not recommended for the n00b, but any competent PC person should be able to do it with the minimum of fuss.

The processor is embedded in the PCB, ie. it's not in a 'socket' like you get with an ATX tower. Hence, you can't upgrade it.

    1) If the drive is formatted for Mac OS X you can still use it for Time Machine and the original files you have on it should not be touched. But it is suggested to have a separate drive for Time Machine.2) It will make the loading of the OS and programs much faster. You already have the Max amount of RAM and you'll probably never use all of it so the only thing that is slowing your Mac down is the slow 5400RPM standard drive installed in it.

At first the TV will only display the basic Mac background picture (stars) You need to 'Mirror' the displays, and sort out the sound.Go to 'System Preferences' and select 'Displays'. With the Mac plugged into the TV you get an extra tab (Arrangements) at the top of the box. Select 'Arrangement' and check the 'Mirror Displays' box.Next from System Preferences select 'Sound'. Both 'Internal Speakers' and the TV are listed. Select the TV.All should be working now.HD video without Blueray - result!!CheersMark

No problem. If you need a larger hard drive they are relatively easy to replace. You will find suitable replacements at OWC along with installation tutorials. They also have enclosures for the old drive and toolkits, if needed. The Late 2011 model wasn't released until October, so you got the latest model at the time of your purchase.

Apologies then. I presumed you were showing a Yosemite screen shot since that's what you were asking about and were noting an error in the upcoming OS.If you like, you can sign up for the Yosemite public beta. The first one million users will get access to the beta whenever Apple releases it to the public. At that point, you could bring up the issue in the Yosemite beta forums.

Im thinking about upgrading the ram in my mbp.

Its currently at the stock 2gb, I was wondering if I would feel much more benefit in upgrading to 8gb compared than to 4gb.

Obviously it will be better to go to 8gb, but 4gb may be plenty for my uses.

I generaly use the machine for some light weight apps simultaneously (chrome, skype, iphoto, itunes) but I do use some "heavier" apps fairly frequently (photoshop, imovie)

Hopefully I've explained it how i mean.

Yes, just touching the metal case is usually sufficient though there are special wrist straps that can be bought for this purpose. Obviously the power cord needs to be disconnected.

TOO MUCH! Just look at the prices they change for just an upgrade for RAM when you buy a new one. $100. I am willing to wager for Apple to replace the RAM, you will walk out of the store poorer by $150 or more.If you go to a third party vendor you can get it for less than $50 and it is easy to install it yourself. Look at the OWC and Crucial websites for compatible RAM. They are probably the two most trusted RAM sources.Ciao.

Should I upgrade it at Apple? Or should I buy it from a third party store (which is cheaper right?) In this case, which brand is more reliable? Will this cause those "unexpected shutdowns" ?

Thanks for your help in advance.

All the manufacturers mentioned are all good but I'd like to add one more - Kingston. I just upgraded my MBP to 2GB using Kingston's model KTA-MB667/1G and it works great. I never had macbook so I have no idea :( Please help me!I heard that MBP 13in have same display thing like Macbook air does, so people recommended me to get MBP 15in...But when I saw tech spec, they all have same display! That intel 4000... So i'm wondering when new macbook pro came out, they all changed into same graphic display? If it's same thing, then i'm thinking just get 13in... because i heard 15in is heavy. And I'm going to use adobe program such as photoshop, illustrator, lightroom... Like that. What do you recommend for hard drive?

    DB:2.67:Macbook Pro 13in Vs 15in xk

The Intel graphics chip that is integrated into the CPU is common to the 2 systems. It shares memory with the system. The 15 in has a second graphics chip that is more powerful, and it has its own dedicated RAM.The 15 in is heavier than the 13 in, but the 15 in is still lighter than the 14 in HP laptop I have for work. For harddrive, I recommend buying the default harddrive. You can buy a new one of larger size for less money at macsales.com and install it yourself. What you WILL want to ay for is what you cannot upgrade yourself later: high-resolution (1680x1050) and anti-glare screen, or faster CPU (not worth the upgrade to faster CPU unless you need the better dedicated graphics card that comes with it).But you need to go to an Apple Store and try out both for weight and screen size. Only you know if the extra weight is worth the extra graphics processing power. For the record, I have a 15 in 2.0 GHz quad-core i7, anti-glare screen, hi-res screen (1680x1050). Default RAM purchased and I upgraded 4 GB to 8 GB. I will change the HD later. Still lighter than a 14 in HP laptop.

I've had 2 13" Macbooks and now have a 15" Macbook. I used all of them to commute to NYC every day. The only difference I've noticed is that the 15" is a little big to open fully on the train sometimes, but it works ok. The difference in weight is not even noticeable, especially if you have the laptop in a backpack. I had the same concern on weight and size when I switched but I decided to take the plunge because I needed the power and wanted a tad more screen space.

The processor is the main part of the computer and it does the thinking for the computer, some applications like games and video editing software needs a good processor or the computer will be really slow. The higher gigahertz (ghz) the processor has the faster it is and the faster the processor the better you can play game without low fps (frames per second). Hopefully this has helped sorry if I have confused anyone or got something wrong.

    More RAM will always help.

The size of your HD could be crucial here. Depending on what you're doing you will need to keep approx 10% of you disk free for use by the OS for Virtual Memory and Temp files. If your HD is quite full, then the OS will take longer to find space on the disk for these things.

None of the Microsoft Office apps are Universal Binaries, and they will therefore take longer to load.

There aren't any games on the market that take advantage of that much RAM. Just consider that an Xbox 360 or a Playstation 3 only has 1/8th that amount of memory.

You can verify quite easily for yourself by following Ned's suggestion, too.

Yes the dedicated video card really makes a difference when using the pro Apps such as Final Cut Express as they are GPU dependent. iMovie should scream.

As for gaming, I don't really know if there will be a difference between 256 or 512 MB VRAM. I have never really understood exactly how the amount of VRAM affects video performance, maybe someone here knows. My guess is it would be about the same

    Hi there,

I'm up for a 2011 Model MBP (15" if that matters).
So now my question is which SSD is there built into it? +1100 for a 512GB SSD is not THAT bad (according to the internet other 512GB SSD cost about the same?)

So is this a fast and reliable SSD or some slow one?

Also, upgrading RAM: If i choose to upgrade my RAM myself, does this affect waranty or apple care?

Also, i have a 22" monitor (not from apple) already here. Would i need a mini-displayport-to-dvi (monitor has a dvi input) or do i need a dual-link adapter?

    DB:2.57:Mbp 2011 Hdd/Ssd + Ram s1

Well, I'm afraid I have to correct that. Upgrade memory and/or Hard Drive does not avoid the warranty. Both procedure are described on the MacBook Pro user guide and are considered on the "upgradable" area for users. But careful (it's also written there)

"If you attempt to install a replacement drive or memory and damage your equipment, such damage is not covered by the limited warranty on your computer."

kristin268,I havent used STATA or other modeling software, so I cant comment on that aspect do such software packages include RAM recommendations in their system requirements? If you run Windows via Boot Camp, then only one of OS X and Windows would run at a time, so Id guess that 8 GB of RAM would be sufficient for either one. If you run Windows using Parallels Desktop, VirtualBox, or some other virtualizer, then OS X and Windows would run simultaneously, and youd need to dedicate some portion of your RAM for exclusive use by the virtualizer in which case youd need to determine how much RAM you would need to adequately run your modeling software, and plan accordingly.

    Hi everyone.

So I have a MBP and it's pretty old now. I got Snow Leopard with a Mac Mini and thought I would upgrade the OS on my MBP but found that the computer didn't meet the system requirements, as Snow Leopard requires 2GB RAM.

I'm not really all that great with computers and just wondered what opinions people might have about whether it is worth me upgrading the RAM on my MBP so that I can keep my MBP up to date for longer? If I upgrade the RAM am I likely to find myself in the same position again when Lion is release next Summer or will I be relatively future proof? Also, am I correct in thinking that the RAM is the only thing that I would need to upgrade?

It's an Intel Core Duo. Here's the spec of my MBP from System Profiler:

Yes I can see where you're going! I'm not very optimistic as I think Apple stopped selling 32-bit machines in 2006/07? 5-6 years seems like a length of time where they can justify forcing hardwear upgrades on people.

Oh well (if that is the case), at least my MBP is now faster and running Snow Leopard and it will still be a viable computer for some time!

I was going to correct you, but there was something stuck in the back of my mind (lot of stuff back there, some accessible, some not ) and a quick search turned this up from Apple Legal:

    C. Leopard Upgrade Licenses. If you have purchased an Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard license, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer *as long as that computer has a properly licensed copy of Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it.* If you have purchased a Family Pack Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard license, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-branded computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household (as defined above), are used by persons who occupy that same household, and each such computer has a properly licensed copy of Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it. The Family Pack Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard License does not extend to business or commercial users.

    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx106.pdf

So yes, you can upgrade directly from Tiger to SL, but legally you need to do it via the "boxed set," not the Upgrade disc. I don't know what Leopard is selling for these days, but it's likely less expensive going that route plus the Upgrade SL; the downside is that you'll have older iLife apps.

I currently have a 5 year old PC that has seen its best day and I use a Mac at work and like how it runs. I'm looking at the Macbook pro non-retina 15 and it gets hazy from this point with all of the upgrades. I will also use this for music and minimal photo and video editing with my Gopro camera. Money is not a huge issue, but I don't want to make the wife mad either. I thought about going with the 13in, but I like having the GDDR that the 15 offers. Would video editing be very time consuming with Intel 4000 vs with additional GDDR on the 15in? I'm looking for a machine that will last about 5-6 years before I have to replace it with a newer model. I know I'm going to get a tone of different opinions, but that's what I'm looking for between these machines. Thanks for the help, I'm looking to buy in May. 13in 2.9Ghz 750HD 5400 (I figured I would get an external usb3 or thunderbolt drive for video or upgrade to 256 SSD for $270) 8GB of RAM (Upgraded to 16GB $125) AppleCare Will run me $1,582 plus RAM upgrade or $1,852 (SSD) plus RAM upgrade. or15in 2.3 w/ 512 GDDR 4GB Ram Thinking of buying Crucial and upgrading to 16GB for $125 750 HD 7200 Hi-Res Antiglare AppleCare Will run me $2,163 (plus Ram Upgrade) Or 2.6 w/ 1GDDREverything else the same. Will run me $2,283 (plus RAM upgrade)

As per their terms, AppleCare needs to be activated while the base warranty is in effect. Sooooo.... You purchase the thing in the 11th month and activate it online. Put the money to work in some fiduciary investment in the meanwhile. Just make sure to register the Mac with Apple the instant you take possession, to ensure continous coverage and no issues when activating AC later down the line.I very emphatically recommend you do a custom order so you get the Widescreen/Antiglare option. Those will be the most productive $100 bucks you will invest on the Mac. Gets you literally half-a-Retina (1680x1050) and you will be able to use it anywhere, including bright sunlight. It also ensures you get the smallest RAM and HDD from Apple, saving your money for more effective third party alternatives. Plus, if you're already enrolled, can get the Education discount from the online store.

    DB:2.53:Upgrded Mbp 13" 2011, But A Few Issues pf

Well I got my "thunderbolt" MBP 13in on tuesday and been working just fine. Today I finally got my 1TB 5400rpm hard drive and two 4GB iRam ram sticks to upgrade to 8GB. I used SuperDuper to clone my drive. I opened up the back (grounded myself) unplugged the battery and began to swap components. took only 10 minuets to do (swap ram and hard drive). Put everything back together. When it came to booting up. It took A LONG TIME to boot. I can understand that for being a massive drive and at 5400rpm. Then my left side of the screen flickers with in rows of pixels. Any one have any sugguestion about that? its very odd and very annoying. The computer read the hard drive space and the 8GB of ram. And now my battery at pratically full charge only read 2 1/2 hours of battery. life. Could it be that the hard drive is killing my battery time too? Any Suggustions are welcomed and appricated. Oh and the mini display to VGA doesnt work too. aughh..

OK, now at least you know what to do when you put the drives in the replacement machine when you get it.

Sorry that means another trip to the store but at least you will have it all sorted out.

Where I live, there is no real Apple store near me. The closest is probably San Antonio or Houston which is like 5-7 hour drive from where I live. I got my MBP at a bestbuy. Does bestbuy offer replacement battery services? Could I ship my MBP to an Apple Retail Store to have it replaced? How does it work?

First you check warranty coverage: https://getsupport.apple.com/ProductSelector.actionThen you talk to Apple Support and agree on how to get it done.I believe they will send you a prepaid shipping box to put the computer in and minimize damage.

Whats up guys/gals?First of all i just picked up my first MBP 13" from the Apple store on 9/11/13In those few days ive done a few things.First i removed the HDD and installed my Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD that was previously in my desktop.I also removed the optical drive, Installed the stock 500GB drive in a Data Doubler. Its boothing quite fast and its nice to have all this extra storage, however, on "Disk Speed Test" im only showing 140MB/s write 410MB/s read.I have not done anything with system settings after installing this drive. Do i need to enable TRIM? Is it ok to sleep the MBP (close the lid) on the SSD?The speeds seem a bit slow for a SSD. Is there anything i am missing? Here are some photos.

If you aren't looking to spend a lot of money I really like the Kuzy Hard Case. I think it does a better job of protecting the Macbook than a lot of other ones that cost 2 or 3 times as much.

DB:2.53:Upgrading Mbp To 4gb Ram Not Working s8

I have a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.5 17" (08) (EMC 2199) which accordingly can be upgrade to 4GB RAM. The memory type required for the model is PC2-5300 DDR2. So I went and bought two 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 modules. When I installed both 2GB for a total of 4GB, the MBP won't boot or make a sound. If I install one of the original 1GB + new 2GB for a total of 3GB, the MBP boots. I have swapped the modules around from slot to another slot. I have tested both 2GB modules with one of the original 1GB module and it will boot. But when I put in both 2GB PC-6400 DDR2, the computer will not boot. Anyone have a suggestion on what I should do? Thank you.

Incorrect. If you do indeed have the Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 17" from early 2008, the maximum RAM it can hold is 3GB. Read the second table on http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1270#link5 (the table titled "+Refer to this table for the maximum+...").

DB:2.53:Upgrading The Ram In A Mbp 15" Question jp

    *I AM A COMPLETE NEWBIE*

I am the proud owner of a brand new MBP 15 unibody (I could only afford the 2GB of RAM version). I will be using this exclusively for LOGIC STUDIO. Its running fine off of the 2GB of RAM, but I would very much like to upgrade it to its max of 4GB OF RAM.

    My questions are:

Is there more than one slot for additional RAM?

If there is more than one slot, do I have to purchase a 2GB card to fill the empty slot to equal 4GB of RAM, or a 4GB of RAM card?

Can any of you post a link to where I can purchase the items?

    Thank you!

DB:2.53:Upgrading The Ram In A Mbp 15" Question jp

I seen your link after I posted the reply, I made the edit.

Yeah, I think I'll be going with the 2GB stick for sure. That 4GB stick is way out of my price range.

    Kudos to you.

DB:2.53:Retina Display: 13 Ins Or 15 Ins Macbook? zk

With the educational discount, similarly specced 13in and 15 in Macbook Retinas are the same price; I prefer the smaller footprint of the 13in, but wonder whether the quad processors, larger battery, and potenatial for upgrades would make the 15 in a better buy.I travel quite a lot, and don't game much, but the machine would be used a lot. I've also noticed that my current 13in MBP (2009) gets quite warm in use, don't know whether the larger processors working 'quietly' would be better than the dual core working their little socks offAny informed opinions?ThanksFax

DB:2.53:Retina Display: 13 Ins Or 15 Ins Macbook? zk

Stuck with 8GB forever. Why did Apple do it? Difficult to say - one more reason I wouldn't go for a Retina just now (and if I did, I'd have to get the 15" to have the option of 16GB - I have 16GB in my 15" non-Retina and use up to 14GB sometimes)...Clinton
