DB:4.61:Security Essential Not Opening On Windows 7 64 Bit p7

    Hi vijay,

Let's start over and make sure everything is done correctly.

Start with the following compliments of Dr. Strangelove:

Verify that you have removed all other real-time antimalware products that were ever installed on your PC, including free/trial products that were installed when the PC was purchased (Norton, McAfee, TM, AVG, OneCare, Malwarebytes (paid), etc).
Then, use the cleanup tools here: List of anti-malware program cleanup/uninstall tools.
You MUST use the cleanup/removal tools to get rid of these programs properly as the normal uninstall process leaves remnants behind that cause problems with any other AV product you install later including MSE. Especially be sure you uninstalled McAfee and
used the McAfee Removal Tool as well:
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507.

NOTE: If you have installed Adobe FLASH, and you already had the Google toolbar, you were presented with the option to install “McAfee Security Scanner”, which is selected by default. If you were caught by this, and unknowingly/accidentally
installed McAfee, uninstall it and use the McAfee cleanup tool in the list above. Other programs "package" deals like this as well with this or other products and if you've recently done a clean install (a restore to factory conditions) you may have also re-installed
trial software that you long since forgot was there.

Verify that your PC clock is correctly set. If not, correct it. If it is wrong, you may also want to either synchronize with a different internet time server or replace your CMOS battery (which keeps the clock running when you turn off the
PC and like any battery can eventually run down).

Verify that Windows Defender is uninstalled (if XP), or Disabled (if Vista/W7).

Verify that you are up-to-date with SERVICE PACKS and updates (including .NET and IE). Yes, it can take some time to do this.

    Then, restart your PC.

If that doesn't work, try the following:

Try a clean boot (Vista and W7)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to
reset your system back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work. If using XP, see
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 and
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434.

If that doesn't work, uninstall and re-install MSE. To uninstall MSE, proceed as follows:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/uninstalling-mse/a63b8c4b-58ed-437e-8086-fa08d80725a4.

To re-install, check out this article and follow ALL the procedures:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/check-list-for-installing-microsoft-security/bf757e6a-e320-4a67-92bc-767e6acb26c4 - but also check out the next paragraph before you begin the download.

If you do or ever did have any other AV program installed on your computer (even if you didn't use it), you need to make sure they are all uninstalled and fully removed before you install. To fully remove them, check out this listing of removal toolshttp://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91
or the listing in that article at the bottom under troubleshooting steps (why this link isn't at the top near things to do first where it discusses removing all the prior and current AV programs is beyond me) or, if not on the lists, go to the website of the
AV software and get and use the removal tool for that product. You cannot just uninstall these programs – you MUST also use the removal tool – even if the uninstall was years ago but you didn’t use a removal tool at the time.

    To install, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx and click on languages and locales at the bottom of the Download button and then choose your language and the appropriate version for your operating system. When you download, save it to the
desktop (rather than running it). When finished, right click on the installation icon and click run as Administrator (even if you’re logged in as an administrator) as I’ve found this sometimes helps.

Then you need to configure your settings, set a scheduled scan, enable real-time protection, update MSE, and then run a quick scan (or a full scan if you have time).

I also recommend the following setup for MSE (though the decision is yours - I've just found this helpful and the most effective and best way to set it up and is how I have mine configured):

Make sure that ALL threat levels are sent to Quarantine where you can then decide whether or not to allow them or leave them there, or remove them. It is the safest solution for having the most options for dealing with the situation. Quarantine is as safe
as removed, but in some cases you may want to remove them to be more certain - and with this one I would remove it (when the time comes). To do this, open MSE, click on the Settings Tab, and for each of the threat levels, set the action to be Quarantine and
    save.

Go to the History tab and click on allowed and unless you specifically placed something in allowed, remove everything else from the allowed category. Only put things there that you ABSOLUTELY know are not problems (are "false positives") and triple-check
before you do it as doing this could allow a real threat to bypass security and infect you and it won't be detected or rather won't be reported or acted upon by MSE.

Go to the Settings Tab and click on Real-time protection and check all the boxes and save.

Go to the Settings Tab and click on SpyNet and click on Advanced and save. This is not at all dangerous to you and no information sent will be used by Microsoft to identify you even if some minor identification information is sent in terms of defining the
infection, but it can sometimes help with new threats by initiating an immediate update to deal with the problem if it is in the SpyNet database (and it helps Microsoft update definitions to provide you and everyone else better protection).

Go to the Settings Tab and click on Advanced and check the box for save Quarantine items and change it from one month to three months so you have more time to decide if you want to restore something.

    *************************************************************

If that doesn't help, then there's a good chance you may be infected by malware. Please proceed as follows:

First, try the following programs if you haven't as they may help. I recommend you download, install, update, and run full scans with Malwarebytes:http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and SuperAntiSpyware:http://superantispyware.com/
and then run a full ESET online scan:
http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner. This may or may not remove the infections, but will probably not repair any damage caused by them. Even if they or your current AV software seem to work or indicate you aren't infected or the problem goes away, you
shouldn't completely trust them and need to continue with the recommendations that follow (so it's up to you if you want to try them first or just skip over all of this and get the expert help you really need as described below).

Properly and completely removing such infections can be complex and often require manual removal procedures (which may or may not be entirely effective either). Even if they work, I'd suggest the following anyway, so we may as well start there (you can ignore
the above removal methods if you want as this is really the way to go, but it won't hurt to try them).

Please follow these recommendations compliments of Stephen Boots - MVP:

Start here - https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/ and select the link that says - I think my computer is infected - and then select the
support option for phone, chat or email (options will vary by Region)

If you are in North America, you can call 866-727-2338 for free help from Microsoft for virus and spyware infections.

In other regions not served by the link above, go here:http://Support.microsoft.com/securityand go to the “assisted support” or contact us menu.

If that doesn't work or they can't help, try one of the following malware-removal forums compliments of PA Bear - MVP:

I can recommend the expert assistance offered in these forums:http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0,http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5,http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup,http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php,
    and http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30

    ********************************************************************

If you were infected by malware, after the system is cleaned you need to once again uninstall and re-install MSE as it is not good to install it on an infected machine which may cause problems or affect the performance of MSE in the future.

Hopefully, one of these solutions (or a step in one of these answers) will resolve the problem. If not, then open a support case describing the problem starting at:https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

MS Security Essential is not being started on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit for the last 2 days, before this it was running perfectly... Please advise a solution.

DB:3.60:Ms Security Essential Is Not Being Started f7

    Hi Abdul,

If recent, then perhaps a System Restore to a point BEFORE the problem started will do the trick. For procedures,
see:http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html. If the first attempt doesn't work, tryone a few daysearlier than the prior one as the problem
may have started before you noticed. This is the simplest and easiest solution to a new and unknown problem like this and often does the trick. MSE will need to be manually updated (as System restore would have removed those since the restore date) and you
may need to check for other updates during this timeframe as they too will have been lost. And you should run a full MSE scan afterwards just to be on the safe side.

If that doesn't work, please proceed as follows:

Start with the following compliments of Dr. Strangelove:

Verify that you have removed all other real-time antimalware products that were ever installed on your PC, including free/trial products that were installed when the PC was purchased (Norton, McAfee, TM, AVG, OneCare, Malwarebytes (paid), etc).

Verify that you are up-to-date with SERVICE PACKS and updates (including .NET and IE).

Yes, it can take some time to do this.

Verify that you are using version 2.0.657.0 or 2.1.1116.0 of MSE.

    Then, restart your PC.

If that doesn't work, try the following:

Try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem.
Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal
status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

If that doesn't work, uninstall and re-install MSE (if using 2.0.657.0, this will also upgrade you to the most recent version). To uninstall MSE, proceed as follows:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/uninstalling-mse/a63b8c4b-58ed-437e-8086-fa08d80725a4.

When finished, right click on the installation icon and click run as Administrator (even if you’re logged in as an administrator) as I’ve found this sometimes helps.

Then, configure the settings as you want them, update MSEmanually, and run at least a quick scan (or a full scan if you have the time) to get it set. Note that it will say on the home page that a scheduled scan has never been run. That's fine because
that was lost by upgrading and in fact by reinstalling. It will show correctly after the first scheduled scan occurs.

Hopefully, one of these solutions (or a step in one of these answers) will resolve the problem. If not, then open a support case describing the problem starting at:https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/.

Does anyone know if I can replace motherboard with the same make and model?

The Microsoft OEM license is good only for the computer on which it is first installed. The question then is when does a computer become a "new computer." The general rule is that you can replace just about any piece of hardware except the motherboard.
Microsoft considers a new motherboard to be a new computer.

There is, however an exception (see
    Microsoft Licensing FAQ, emphasis added):

    Q. Can a PC with an OEM Windows operating system have its motherboard upgraded and keep the same license? What if it was replaced because it was defective?

First, if you are using Windows 7, you do not need XP SP2. Not sure why you are even asking this.
Use the uninstall procedure(s) here to remove MSE:
    Uninstalling MSE
Next, make sure Windows 7 is up-to-date with all updates, including .net. This is where you go to Start, All Programs, Windows Update, and check for updates.
Then, verify that you have removed/uninstalled all otherreal-time antimalware products that were ever installed on your PC, including free/trial products that were installed when the PC was
purchased (Norton, Symantec, McAfee, TM, AVG, Avast, Avira, Malwarebytes (paid), etc).
Then, use the cleanup tools here:List of anti-malware program cleanup/uninstall

How long will MS support MSE? I heard that MS will discontinue supporting MSE in 2015. Is that true? If not, when will support for MSE stop?

Please advise as I wonder now if I should be considering another AV program. Thank you.

    DB:2.93:Need To Install Windows 7 32 Bit 8j

    Hi,
We have an Acer laptop that came with windows 7 64 bit installed.
Our old Toshiba laptop running Vista has finally died, but it has some essential software we use on it that will not run with windows 7 64 bit.
It will run with windows 7 32 bit however, so I need to somehow get the 32 bit O/S installed instead of the 64 bit.
Any ideas how to do this????

    DB:2.93:Need To Install Windows 7 32 Bit 8j

Before you can consider putting Windows 7 32 bit on the machine, as suggested, you will need a license.

Where can I still get Windows 7?
    Full version -

    Microsoft
    Windows 7 Home Premium

    Full version -

    Microsoft
    Windows 7 Ultimate

    Full version -

    Microsoft
    Windows 7 Professional

If you can't afford the full retail version, you can purchase a 32 bit version of Windows 7 OEM System Builder license which much cheaper. Once you have a copy, you can dual boot with your existing 64 bit version of Windows 7.

Please see the following article with some helpful information regarding dual booting:

Tried this it did not work

What happened when you tried to uninstall MSE via Control Panel?

    What operating system?
    Prior Security Software?
    Any security software still installed?

    Try this alternate method:

    1. Download theMSE installer for your Operating Systemfrom the Home Page:
    http://microsoft.com/security_essentials
    2. Save the file to your Desktop. This will ensure that you can find it easily after the download is done.
    3. Now press the Windows Key and R all at the same time. This will open the RUN dialog box.

    4. Make sure that you delete any entries inside RUN. Now drag the MSE installer into the RUN dialog box.
5.Depending on your Operating System, after dragging the file into RUN it shouldappear as anyof the three below:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe"
    C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-vista-win7
    C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-amd64fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe
    6. Now put a space in between the whole line and put /Uas seen below:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe" /U
    C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-vista-win7 /U
    C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Desktop\mssefullinstall-amd64fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe /U

Prior Security Software? What about a trial version of an antivirus program that was pre-installed when the computer was purchased? McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro?
Sometimes remnants of prior security software will suddenly cause issues with your current antimalware program.

A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC.
Be sure you have removed all other security software from the PC.
You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91

If you’re not sure which security apps may have been on your computer try a scan with this security application detection/removal tool:
    http://www.appremover.com/.
    When running Appremover:
First, run the Remove Security Applications scan and then run the Clean Up A Failed Installation Scan.

Recommend you thoroughly review the following link:

    getting this error. Help?

MSE identified a virus that it cannot remove and is directing you to try the Windows Defender Offline scanner. What is the name of the malware?

    See the following:
    http://ask-leo.com/windows_defender_offline_scan_your_computer_for_malware_without_booting_windows.html?awt_l=Bg3x_awt_m=JqgKoVn.FZdfbL

Alternatively, try these “free” on demand scanners which will not interfere with your resident AV program -
you might need to run them in Safe Mode or Safe Mode With Networking:

Go to www.malwarebytes.org and download, install, update and run the free version – just follow the prompts. Select Download Free – at the end of the installation
is a dialog with 3 check boxes: The first option is to Enable Free Trial of Malwarebytes Pro and you must uncheck the first option to install the free version without real time protection enabled. You may need to rename the installation file to 123.exe
or something similar to prevent the malware from disabling/blocking the installation. Or you might want to download the installation file to a flash drive or CD and then install Malwarebytes on the infected computer.

    And/or
    Try Hitman Pro Trial Version:
    http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro
This program may be run from a flash drive.

    And/or
    Try TDSS Killer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-tdss-tdl3-alureon-rootkit-using-tdsskiller
TDSS Killer may be run from a flash drive.

    And/or

I have both antivirus and microsoft security essential in my sysytem(windows 7 64-bit).Even then my system is getting effected with trojans.

You actually answered your own question.
You should never have more than one security product installed on the PC providing active protection/scanning. This can cause performance issues, system instability, and can hinder the effectiveness of both
    products at providing protection.
However, the Trojans are probably getting there because of a pre-existing infection or unsafe computer practices. The fact that they aren't being stopped by your installed protection is potentially due to the conflict.

    See:
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msescan/thread/87058857-d181-4019-a723-efd9a49d9275

And once the PC is confirmed clean, follow these guidelines (with only *one* security program installed - be that MSE or other antivirus software)

Make sure that the Windows Firewall is enabled.
Make sure that all important/critical updates, including service packs for the operating system and programs are installed from Microsoft Update (Windows Update).
Make sure Internet Explorer is at version 8 and updated with all patches.
In Internet Explorer 8, use the SmartScreen Filter.
Make sure that IE Internet Security settings are at least set to medium-high (default).
Enable the pop-up blocker in IE.
On Vista and Windows 7 make sure thatUser Account Control (UAC) ON
and not running with elevated privileges.
Make sure that Windows Automatic Updates are set to at least notify, but the preferred setting is to download and install automatically. If you update manually, be sure to update as soon as possible after being notified of available updates.
Make sure that installed applications, especially Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash, and Java are at their latest versions. Many vendors are regularly updating and patching for security holes.
Never click through links from unknown sources and use caution even if they are from a "trusted" source.
    Never open unsolicited email attachments.
    Practice safe web browsing.

If you start Windows without logging in, that is it starts to the Windows desktop, logging out and back in again will more than likely resolve it. MSE is losing the startup battle -- that is, the notification part or icon.

ON Windows XP I have MSSE installed and updated but my system reports it is not protected and that i need an antimalware software -- what should I do?

Unfortunately we'reseeing occasional reports on the MS Community forums of such behavior involving MSE and
Security Center - usually but not always involving XP.

See the Answer of Reallyoldguy in this thread - maybe his fix will work for you:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_scanning/why-is-microsoft-real-time-protection-turning-off/f754c36b-b279-47a7-96ee-082639ade4b5?page=1

If the MSE icon is green then you should be protected and can ignore

    Regards Dave.

There’s no need to schedule scans with Windows 8 Defender. A daily Quick Scan is run by Automatic Maintenance. This is fully automatic, and it essentially solves the serious reliability issues that we see with the Security Essentials
scheduled scan. Also, the Regular Maintenance task runs the Windows Defender Scheduled Scan task in a way that forces the task to yield to user activity and this avoids the need for the CPU capping feature. So Windows Defender handles scheduled scans in a
much better way, and no additional scheduling is required or recommended. Some further details are provided here:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/windows-defender-windows-8-schedule-option-missing/b6603c6a-cba9-4ba7-a894-37f895fc6c92?page=2

There are some cases where scanning an individual download or email attachment is advisable, so you might want to use this do-it-yourself method:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-security/can-msewindows-defender-scan-specific-files-or/66e551a6-5018-4096-9dda-6ec2423028ac

You can’t fully rely on any AV product to protect you; but that certainly doesn’t mean that some products aren’t more reliable than others. Microsoft’s detection technology hasn’t been faring too well in independent tests, especially
since the major AV-testing labs made a paradigm shift to “real-world” testing, i.e., testing against zero-day threats. So you might want to take a peek at the test data in order to get a better perspective on how reliable Windows Defender’s protection is.

    Hi all,
I have a brand new PC installed with Windows 7 64 bit version.
The PC works fine before I install Microsoft Security Essential.
I got a BSOD.. saying that "A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor. "
I can isolate the problem with MSE because there was nothing installed in the system except video driver and Windows 7.
I have created a backup of my system and can recreate the same BSOD anytime I reinstall MSE.
    My system config below:
    Asus P7P55D-E LX
    Intel Core i7 870
    AData 1600 DDR3 Ram (2 x 2Gb)
    WD 1Tb HDD
    Galaxy GTX 460 1Gb DDR5
On another related note... I have bought this PC together with my friend.
He got the exact config as mine except the motherboard (his uses MSI) but he got no problem running MSE at all.
So I am wondering if this could be hardware related issue as well?
    Thanks.

Is the media you installed from Microsoft, or the vendor of your PC? If from a vendor restore/recovery partition or other supplied media, you will likely still have whatever trial software they provided, which you need to remove properly.
If you installed from a Microsoft-purchased DVD/CD or download, then the situation is different.

DB:2.75:Microsoft Security Essential Scan My Lumia 800 For Viruses 8f

    Hi gmcrostie,

    Short answer: No.

MSE system requirements limit it to certain operating systems only as shown in systems requirements:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials/product-information.

While MSE can scan attached devices (like external hard drives and flash drives and such), they cannot be devices using separate operating systems that are not compatible with MSE.

    Hi,

I would suggest you to try running disk cleanup and check if it helps.

OK its great that Windows 7 Ultimate can use EFS to encrypt a file or folder - but not much good to me when the encryption cert is present on the laptop and is automatically invoked when I attempt to open a previously EFS-encrypted folder.

DB:2.75:Anyway To Get Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Sp1 To Prompt For A Pw When Opening An Efs-Encrypted Folder dd

    Hi
I do understand what you are saying, but EFS is not set up to work that way.
The password security is the password for your user account.
The number 1 commandment of computer security is that you never, ever, leave your computer logged on and unattended in a location where someone else can access it.
If you need to step away from the computer for a short time, you can simply press Windows Logo Key + L to lock the computer. This does not close any programs or documentsand when you enter your account password, it's not like a fresh logon, everything appears
immediately, just the way you left it.
This is an easy way to protect everything, as opposed to entering a passwrod every time you want to access the folders andfiles that are encrypted.

A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC. Remove all other security software from the PC.
You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:

    Hi there,
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate with IE11, it worked fine until yesterday. Now when I click on the IE icon a blank window opens and just sits there for about a minute and closes, no activity from IE at all. I ran my Microsoft essential security and do
not have any viruses. I've uninstalled IE11 64 bit through "view program updates" and reinstalled, still nothing. I have internet and email on my network, just no access to I.E.

DB:2.74:Internet Explorer 11 With Windows 7 Ultimate...Ie Does Not Open Or Run j9

    I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
IE11 ran fine on my computer until yesterday. I click on IE in the task bar and it opens but will not load any page and then quits responding. No error message ever appears. I uninstalled IE11 and had the same problem with IE10. I uninstalled IE10 and IE
9 finally worked. I then reinstalled IE11 and the same problem as before, no page would ever load and then IE 11 stopped responding.

Skype also quit working as well. I click on its icon, get a few seconds of the blue circle, and then nothing. I go to the action centers reliability monitor and it just says IEstopped responding and Skype quit working.

There were these technical details in the reliability log.
The program IEXPLORE.EXE version 11.0.9600.16428 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

    Prior Security Software?
    Any security software still installed?

    Please review the following:
A possible reason for this problem is that you have conflicting security software installed fully or partially on the PC. Remove all other security software from the PC.
You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software. See this Wiki article:
List of anti-malware product removal tools

Be sure to review this Wiki:
Microsoft Security Essentials Installation Checklist and
    this, too:

My recommendation, after reviewing the above and taking action to remove conflicting software and addressing any other potential issues with your setup, is to
uninstall MSE, see this Wiki article: Uninstalling
    Microsoft Security Essentials

    Then install from:
    www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Be sure to select the correct version for your operating system and also the language, if that applies.

how to run security essential setup wizard on a 64-bit computer? It said that the setup wizard cannot complete with error code 0x8004FF2E

To begin the installation process, follow these steps. If you already have a backup, and your PC is already up-to-date, then you may begin at step #3.

Backup your data. Use whatever media you have at your disposal to get a backup (i.e. USB stick, CD/DVD, external hard drive). After the backup, remove/unplug the media and store for safekeeping.
Update your PC. You should be at the latest
Service Pack for your OS, and fully updated, including optional and .NET updates. This should be done regardless of which anti-malware product you use. Being up-to-date will ensure performance, stability, and will correct known security problems.
Go to Microsoft Update. If you are severely out-of-date, this can take some time. This is also a good time to check the
date and time on your PC clock, and correct if necessary, and to update third-party products and drivers (Java, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, etc.)
Remove ALL real-time anti-malware products that were ever installed on your PC
(Norton, McAfee, TM, AVG, Avast, Avira, ESET, etc.) Uninstall your previous real-time anti-malware. Then, use the removal/cleanup tools in this
article. Not only should you remove your current anti-malware product(s), you should also uninstall any free or trial anti-malware products that may have been installed
on your PC when purchased, even if never activated. Some anti-malware products have their own firewall. Removing/uninstalling these products will (or should) enable the Windows Firewall. MSE will use the Windows Firewall by default. After removal and cleanup
of all other anti-malware products, restart your PC and check that the Windows Firewall is ON. You can check the status of the Windows Firewall in the Action Center (or Security Center if XP) of your PC, or via the Control Panel.
Install MSE. Do NOT use any site other than Microsoft to get the download. Using Internet Explorer (or Firefox), go to the

MSE Download page and click the Free Download button. If you are Windows 7/Vista 64-bit, you may want to avoid any issues and click on “More
languages and versions” and select the 64-bit download for Windows 7/Vista. Take the default answers, including the question about turning ON the firewall, unless you specifically do not want to run a firewall.
After the installation, MSE will want to update the definition files, and run a quick scan. This will not take long (except for dial-up), and needs to be done. If a virus is detected during the scan, let MSE take the default actions to correct it.

    Recommend you thoroughly review

    DB:2.73:Hp Photosmart Essential 3.5 Hpqpse.Exe Is Not Compatible With Windows 7 k8

JimAR, what these 2 Moderators are telling you, is a load of absolute rubbish!
    Why?
Because, funnily enough, that's EXACTLY what I am using!
    In a Win 7 Premium 32-bit OS!
HP PhotoSmart Essential 3.5...........is a part, of my HP "All-in-One" PSC printer software package!
And, YES, it does come in the 64-bit version as well!
I was mighty surprised at finding out that HP has DEVELOPED a new Software package.
For ALL "All-in-one" PSC printers! Yes,yes, a REAL 'one package-suits-all' deal!
I had just upgraded to Win 7, from XP Pro SP3, in the full knowledge......of knowing that the OLD HP software was never going work...in Win 7. The Win 7 Advisor ALERTED me, to that fact, so I checked with HP.
And there, as LARGE AS LIFE, when I tried to download theusual version for my All-in-one printer, up POPS this brand-new 'Software package' I am referring to.
Did I strike any trouble/problems.....with the software?
Not on your Life! This software package works an absolute treat, in my Win 7 Premium OS!
One of you Moderators (sic) REFER to this HP software as a 'game'. Again, what absolute rot!
How in earthdid you two 'earn' those so-called 'medals'?
I know, you are Microsoft Support Engineer Staff!
And, you can automatically REWARD yourselves.....with these 'medals' (with NOTHING but redirecting 'links'......like a 'traffic-cop directing traffic'!), and, SOLVE very little yourselves!, while the rest of us (the real End-users!)...........have to REALLY
EARN these 'points'......the HONEST WAY, the HARD WAY!

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/971058?p=1- if necessary, run theFixIttoreset
    the Windows update components.
    3. Any other security software still installed?Apossiblereason for this problem is that you haveconflicting security softwareinstalled fully
or partially on the PC. Did you have a trial version of McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro pre-installed when the laptop was purchased? Remove all those security software from the PC.
    4. You may need to use a cleanup tool to remove your prior security software:

    DB:2.70:Re: Autocad 2012 Windows 7 64 Bit Crashing k9

AutoCAD 2012 unreliable and contiuously crashes on various commands. Notebook shuts down reboots from system recover startup menu. No error record or reportedby autocad due to total crash of notebook. Windows systems reports "previous system shutdown was unexpected" and " computer has rebooted from a bugcheck".

The following actions always caused crashes :

    -Selection of "Dist" from toolbar

-Selecting "Purge All" when purging, purging individual item did not cause crash

    -Selection of "Rotate" from toolbar

-Print "Legal" size page, printing of "letter" size page did not cause crash

Performed the standand repair reload of AutoCAD 2012 with no improved results. I have abandoned the use of 2012 and reloaded the last proven version 2010 with SP 64 bit due to project timelines requiredin my business. 2010 has been working with no errors or crashes.

Currently running many other programs (several are XP mode) with no errors.

    Current Notebook:

    - New (May 2011) Dell Vostro Notebook 3750

    - Windows 7 64 bit current SP updates

    - Microsoft Security Essential installed (only security program that has not conflicted with previous AutoCAD software)

    DB:2.70:Re: Autocad 2012 Windows 7 64 Bit Crashing k9

Crashes are caused by lame Ribbon fad taking software industry by storm.

It's the Ribbon and .NET crashing you. Switch Autocad to CLASSIC MODE and even 2012 becomes reliable or at least "more" reliable, also I switched Inventor2012 into classic - how, is a secret.

That has no relation to WINODWS Theme.

Now do switch WIndows into Classic themse as well as Autocad (both)., customize colors in WIndows Win COlor/Appearance by theway, it works unlike lame Aero theme meant fo rkids and home/nonprofessional users.

I am using Vista SP2 with automatic updating. I downloaded security essential for the virus protection. It somehow uninstalled Security Center. I can not start Security Center, Firewall, or Defender. I tried pausing Windows Management Instrumentation
(WMI) and deleting C:\Windows|System32\webm\repository, resumed WMI. Repository rebuilt, but Security Center is still missing even after reboot. Is Security Essential meant to run with Security Center firewall?

MSE will disable Windows Defender on Vista, but it does not disable *Windows* Security Center and it confirms that the Windows Firewall is enabled.
It does not disable access to the Windows Security Center.

you cannot run both of them at once.. Defender is "system program" of security essential and security essential is having all the features of defender + additional features.. upon installing essentials, defender is turned off by default..

DB:2.70:Incompatibility With Security Essential And Iomega Quickprotect 8z

I am having a problem with Microsoft Security Essential frequently not loading realtime scanning correctly, the PC pretty much locks up if this is not running. The machine is running Windows 7 64 bit version, and I have the correct MSE download (64 bit version).
As well as randomly not loading, it can triggered by starting Outlook (2007 version - but all updates installed) as soon as the desktop appears - Outlook then hangs, and realtime scanning will not start. The problem can also be triggered by Iomega Quikprotect
(64 bit version) being present in start-up file or not. I have reinstalled all software several times, but problem recurs. Any other suggestions known conflicts issues that I am missing? My conclusions are that there are incompatibility issues between Windows
7 and Outlook 2007 which are not disclosed, ditto Windows 7 and Quikprotect, and MSE is not wholly robust. Comments?

DB:2.70:Incompatibility With Security Essential And Iomega Quickprotect 8z

    Hi,

    - How long have you had this issue?

    - Did you make any software changes on the computer prior to the issue?

There aren’t any compatibility issues between Windows 7 and Microsoft Office Outlook as such.

I’d recommend you to start your computer in a clean boot state and see if the aforementioned issue persists. The issue is most likely caused by a third-party program/startup item.

For instructions, see How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Note: After troubleshooting, ensure to set the computer to start as usual as mentioned in
Step 7 in the KB article.

For questions related to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), I’d suggest you to post your question in the following forum:

DB:2.70:How To Disable Photosmart Essential From Opening When Opening Cd/Dvd Tray On Photosmart C5280? ps

I have an HP Photosmart C5280 and am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with the latest software available on HP's website. Photosmart Essential 3.5 is included with these drivers.

How do I disable Photosmart Essential from automatically opening when I open the CD/DVD tray on my HP Photosmart C5280 without completely disabling the HP Digital Imaging Monitor? I use Surething CD Labeler to print labels on my discs and having the HP software open automatically is annoying.

DB:2.70:How To Disable Photosmart Essential From Opening When Opening Cd/Dvd Tray On Photosmart C5280? ps

I am having the same issue, but I don't want to delete the HP Photosmart program entirely. I just want to disable the auto detect of photo media window (so I can run the program when I want). I cannot find any preferences that let me do that (I have many other photo programs and they all have a preference option to shut off the automatic detect photo media option).

So, if anyone knows how to achieve the same with HP Photosmart, let me know please.

    Thank you,

    John

I'll add a question, too. If you do nothing, does MSE eventually start? If so, your problem may simply be low resources at startup - meaning that many other programs are fighting for memory and processor power at start time and MSE is losing the battle,
or at least the notifier. Services for MSE may actually be starting.
