    DB:3.59:Vcenter Compare With Exchange 2007 Physical d7

    Dear all,
I am in the mid of comparing both Exchange 2007 in Vmware and Exchange 2007 in physical

In terms of manageability, i found that virtualization will be more complicated than physical Exchange
    For VMware
You are required to know how to administer both vCenter and Exchange

    For Exhange Physical
You only requires to know how to administer Exchange

I do agree vCenter ease the provisioning vms, but for company with limited resources this is a high learning curve for the administrator. Especially when you are looking at 1 person to manage multiple server, storage, network and clients.
Bear in mind, there us no other products to be introduced (such as SCVMM, SCOM, etc) due to budget constraint.
Is there any articles that supports my thoughts above?

    DB:3.59:Vcenter Compare With Exchange 2007 Physical d7

VMware vCenter is ridiculously easy to administer. We don't do any new server installations without virtualization any more, it's just not worth it. Take the ten minutes you'll need to figure out vCenter and install your new Exchange Server into
a VM on an ESX server. A week into it, and you'll wonder how you ever got any accomplished without virtualization.

This is major news, so now after ESX validation, there will be official Microsoft support for their OS and applications running in VMware! So no more hold-ups from vendor on moving forward with VMware. In addition they are adjusting licensing to be more virtual friendly as well. I'm sure there will be more of this to come in the future as well.

DB:3.47:Vipr Srm - Which Server Virtualization Technologies Are Supported? 8z

Which server virtualization technologies can ViPR SRM report on and what does it provide for visibility?

DB:3.47:Vipr Srm - Which Server Virtualization Technologies Are Supported? 8z

ViPR SRM supports the following server virtualization technologies:
VMware vCenterIBM LPARsMicrosoft Hyper-V (under Report Library)
VMware vCenter and IBM LPAR data is normalized and is visible under the single pane of glass view represented by the Explore node. Under the Explore node, you will find a CI Dialog for each device ViPR SRM is configured to collect data on - Virtualized Host for the purposes of this discussion. (CI stands for Configuration Item and is another name for a ViPR SRM device.) Within the Explore node, for a virtualized server, here is the list of major use cases covered within the CI Dialog:
Topology - this provides an End-to-End perspective around physical as well as logical connectivity;Capacity - this includes slicing and dicing of Capacity consumption numbers for variety of use cases;Performance - this is where the performance trending of the device as well as its components can be monitored;Events/Alerts
In addition to the above use cases, Chargeback by Host use case is also fulfilled under the Explore node.

To go into the specifics, here is a CI Dialog for a VMware Virtual Machine, invoked from within the Explore node. It covers, in a single shot, the End-to-End topology view for the VM, its basic attributes and all the reports available for the VM.

Between the topology map and Storage Path Details, you have information around both physical and logical connectivity at your finger tips:

Before we move onto other use cases, here is the CI Dialog for a VIO client. As you can see it looks very similar to the one for VMwares Virtual Machine.

Reviewing the Capacity reports next for VMware VM. List of Datastores, with usage breakdown, capacity of each Virtual Disk and the Related LUN can be found here.

Similarly for a VIO client, details around Volume Groups and Disks are reported on.

Chargeback reports can be found under Explore Storage More Reports Chargeback by Host node.

This is really just the surface, there is so much more to explore in this node.

I do want to switch gears and talk about Report Library a bit. So, if Explore node is all about generalizing/normalizing, Report Library is all about specifics. Explore node gives us a uniform view across a VMware VM and IBM LPAR/VIO on the other hand Report Library will bring out the differences by pointing out the specifics. Here is a quick glimpse of VMware vCenter vs. IBM LPAR Report Library.

Currently Microsoft Hyper-V is only supported within the Report Library. Which means it hasnt gone through the process of data normalization yet and so is not supported in all the of the reports available under the global Explore and Dashboard report. But we still have the specifics available.

A nice summary for hosts is available:

Another example would be availability of Volume Allocation information:

This is really a glimpse of whats available around virtualized servers. If there are specific questions that we can get answered, please let us know.

We are a child domain in a pure Exchange 2007 environment, where the parent domain (Same Exchange forest) is in a mixed Exchange 2003/2007 environment. By us extending the schema for Exchange 2010 thiswouldprevent them from installing any addidtional
E2K7 servers, from what you guys are telling me.

Not entirely accurate AFAIK. You can continue to add/remove Exchange 2007 servers so long as at least one Exchange 2007 server exists. Once you remove the last Exchange 2007 server (so you only have Exchange 2010 servers), you cannot go back and add an Exchange

Second point: Licensing. In a vmware environment you've to license ALL processors/cores
of the server not just the assigned processors/cores for the virtual machine.Flip side - you only need to license ALL CPUs once, no matter how many VMs you end up using.

So if your organization has an 8-CPU physical system, you could have ten 1-CPU VMs running on it.

Not that there will be any net savings, since switching between machines is extra overhead. That switching takes CPU cycles away from being used by Oracle. Indeed, my personal analysis of VMs running on top of an OS (eg: VMWare Server or VMWare Workstation, both of which require a host OS) indicates that the overhead of the VM and the hosts's switching ultimately dilutes the effective CPU - if you are buying Oracle by the CPU, that overhead has increased the number of CPU licenses you need to purchase to achieve the same Oracle throughput.

So if a Virtualization solution is requried (and there are good reassons), my suggestion is to use the solution that

    1) is supported
    2) has the lowest overhead

    @OP: Note that
When should we be using Red Hat Virtualization, Citrix Virtualization, Xen Virtualization, Microsoft Virtualization, Oracle Virtualization and VMWare. goes down the 'vendor specific' path. Look under the covers to determine what-is-what. Any Virtualization that is built on Open Source MUST describe it's lineage. Any Virtualization that is provided by a vendor escapes from technical discussion and becomes a political discussion: which vendor(s) do you trust to provide the best support for your {Oracle | Peoplesoft | SAP | timesheets ...} environment?

Also, your enviroment must be taken into account.

Does your company require certified enviroment?
    Budget a factor?
    Administrator experience?

If you're don't have much *nux experience, VMware would be best. If you have no Windows, then you can't use VMware's managment console as it is Windows only, so maybe Xen. If you must run a "certified" enviorment, OracleVM. Do you have a SAN in place for sharing virtual machines between physcial hosts?

If money is no question - the ideal (in my opinion)
VMware Enterprise. Multiple physical hosts with identical hardware (blade or rack work fine) SAN attach all physical hosts to an EMC SAN via FC, no iSCSI (HP IBM work too, but it honestly is cleaner with EMC) Pay for a Virtual Center Managment Server and implement at least DRS and VCB. Yell at Oracle to certify.

    DB:3.17:Virtualization Of Exchange Servers? 8x

    Greetings All

I am building a new Exchange Server environment (Exchange Server 2010), is it compatible with VMWare, Hyper-V? and do you recommend virtualizing Exchange Servers?
    Thank you
    Jamil

    DB:3.17:Virtualization Of Exchange Servers? 8x

The product group doesn't state that Exchange cannot be virtualized. They don't recommend it but it is supported. I have virtualized many Exchange organizations with keeping performance in mind and have not had any issues. I have just built
smaller servers with less resources and then created building blocks of these to add as needed. I have virtualized many SMB companies with ~250 mailboxes, a few with ~1500mailboxes and another few with ~30,000 mailboxes.
On the other side, If I were able to purchase new hardware, I would purchase servers with many disk bays for local storage that I could use for large disks for each database or multiple dbs. This gives you time to build and jetstress storage and be
    completely independent of other applications.

In the end, just be smart about the virtualization, keep DBs on separate Datastores or with lesser performing vms, do your homework on configurations and I/O and realize that you may have to make exceptions to some of the VMware resources.Jason Apt, Microsoft Certified Master | Exchange 2010

Hello There,It seems RSG Exchange 2007 SP1 canonly beencreated on the server where production database located. Is it possible to create a RSG to another Exchange 2007 server as we can do on Exchange 2003? For Example, we only have exchange 2007 SP1 CCR for mailbox server and an Exchange 2007 SP1 with Public folder server with mailbox server role. Can we do RSG recovery for database on CCR on the Exchange 2007 SP public folder server since We run issue with exchange CCR when we do RSG recovery on it?Thanks

    Hi guys.

Wasn't too sure where to post this one.. Could be an intresting debate.

Was looking at upgrading vSphere to Update1 today. Although im holding off until this is clarified.

Going onto MS's Virtualization Validation program... Update 1 is not listed, where as the various updates for 3.5 are.. Therefore, is it not supported in MS eyes? I know this is splitting hairs, but I know this has been an issue with unsupported Exchange configurations in the past. ie Exchange 2007 on a 2003 VM. I would rather not be situation where I 'could' be unsuppored.

Although it is supported by VMWare I do not believe that it is supported for any MS product as yet..

    Could anyone clarify this?

    Thanks

    DB:3.14:Exchange 2010 On Vsphere 4, Best Practices Multi-Part Series 89

A new series from one of my colleagues on Exchange:

As an active consultant in the virtualization world, one of the most frequent questions I get from my clients is whether or not they should virtualize Exchange. Moreover, theres an increasing interest in the virtualization of this tier-1 application in regard to availability and performance in an existing vSphere environment. VMwares policy with Exchange (and many other core service apps) is to virtualize first. But what about support? With Microsofts SVVP (Server Virtualization Validation Program), were seeing first release apps like Exchange 2010 with full support out of the gate on VMwares vSphere 4 platform. So if Microsoft is saying its okay, VMware is saying go for it, and your organization is in need of better performance and increased availability for your Exchange email environment, then the only thing you need to know now is what sort of catches, gotchas, and best practice recommendations you need under your belt before you take on the mighty Exchange application

Enter this blog series. Ive hosted many seminars on Exchange 2007 virtualization, however with Exchange 2010 I wanted to take some time to give Microsoft and VMware administrators a reference point based on what Ive experienced and learned with Exchange on VMware environments. So without further adieu, Part 1

    DB:3.14:Exchange 2010 On Vsphere 4, Best Practices Multi-Part Series 89

    All,

Alex is absolutely correct With regards to any limitations, the sticking point for HA and DRS/vMotion only apply to clustered Mailbox nodes or multi-role systems employing DAGs. For Client Access and Hub Transport servers, HA and DRS/vMotion are fair game. Keep in mind that you're still required at a disk level to use thick format volumes/vmdk's and snapshots are not officially supported.

    Thanks,

    Hi to all,

I want to upgrade my exchange server 2000 to a virtualized exchange 2003. The databases are sized up to 200 GB and there are about 1300 Mailboxes.

Does anybody have experiences with that? Is that supported?

    Thanks in advance,

    Birte

    DB:3.14:Virtualization Of Exchange 2003 17

    Hi Birte,

We have 6 exchange mailbox servers running on 2.5.2

Each mailboxserver has at least 1200 users.

One mailbox server has 1700 users.

    More info in this thread:

    http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=57583

We have decided to stop running the Exchange servers as Virtual Machines.

We cannot get the Exchange server to receive the I/O operations it needs.

If you must virtualize your exchange enviroment, please scale down to 500 users per exchange server.

In our case, we would go from 6 to 20 and with the roll-out of blackberries,

we calculated that 30 exchange mailbox servers would be the bare minimum.

I don't know if you have blackberry users, but keep in mind that blackberry users will create an I/O load similar to 4 to 5 normal exchange users.

I haven't tested the performance in a ESX 3.0 enviroment.

I'm hoping to do that this week.

Hi All,Our company has a DR test coming up and I have been asked to put together a plan for testing Exchange. We are running E2K7 with CCR and SCR components. Here are the steps that I for see, however having never done this I would like to put it out there to see if I am missing anything.BTW - We are using virtualization technology in this test. Thanks for your time1. MPLS/WAN lines are cut to the DR site2. SCR configuration is disabled on live (production) mail cluster servers3. Exchange services are stopped on DR exchange server and DR hub transport server4. Clone DR exchange server excluding the mailbox stores5. Clone DR hub transport server including the public folder database6. Clone the DR domain controller 7. Restart Exchange services on both cloned Exchange servers8. Run 'setup /recovercms' to install DR exchange server as production Exchange server9. Ensure exchange services are started and databases mounted, then play forward the 5 day lag into the database10. Point mailbox databases at the public folder store on DR exchange server if not already done11. Connect through OWA and MAPI client to test functionality of mailboxes and public folders12. Once confirmed that email is functioning shutdown cloned DR Exchange Hub Transport server, but do not power up13. Shut down DR Mailbox server and restore cloned image14. Boot server, disable all SCR configuration via powershell and manually remove database and logs - there will be errors as the database will be inconsistent with what is expected15. Shut down DR exchange server and restore cloned image of DR domain controller16. Restore network connection and boot Exchange servers and DC17 Re-establish SCR configuration as per original design

Thanks for the input.I agree that this is not a true test. The reason they are doing this is (as I found out later) it's going to happen over three days while the production systems are still live. It's also going to happen during the work week. Not much I can do at this point, I've provided some feedback which is basically all I can do.

I have looked at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975354but the hotfix apparently does not apply to my host server 2008 r2 datacentre. Also the registry entry does not exist.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtualization\VssRequestor
    Name: BackupType
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 0 or 1
It tells me to create the entry, but I think it refers to the entry BackupType but I do not even have Virtualization\VssRequestor. Must I create the whole entry or am I missing something here.
Would also like to hear how other people combine the host and guest level backup of exchange virtual servers (2003\2007\2010) and what schedules they run.

My question is, when I point our firewall from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010, does 2007 proxy through Exchange 2010, or do I need to keep firewall rules open for Exchange 2007 server, as after the redirect happens from 2010 to 2007, communication to-from

    DB:3.08:Interesting Exchange Server 2007 / Virtualization Question c3

Ok. This might be a strange question, but I wanted to put it out and see what your thoughts are.

I just ordered a Dell R900 server with 2x Quad Core Xeon 2.13Ghz CPUs, 16gb RAM, and roughly 750GB RAID 5 SAS storage. I want to start using virtualization with this server, but I'm not ready to step it up to the "enterprise" class virtualization software.

The primary use for this server will be an Exchange '07 Standard server (supporting up to 150 mailboxes). However, I would like to use VMWare server to virtualize 3 other servers (Windows Updates / Antivirus, SQL based scheduling software, and Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0). All 3 virtual servers will be rather low utilization servers.

Since VMWare server only allows 4gb RAM 2 CPU cores per VM, I thought it would make sense to run Exchange '07 directly on Windows Server 2003 x64, outside of a VM. Basically loading VMWare Server and Exchange Server together on the base OS. This would keep me from being restricted to 2 CPU cores for exchange server, but would still allow me to virtualize the lesser used servers.

What are your thoughts about this? Do you see any issues with doing this?

Thanks for any and all input!

    DB:3.08:Interesting Exchange Server 2007 / Virtualization Question c3

    Sorry. Double Post.

I really appreciate the advice, and I know this should probably be a dead issue after your advice, but I am just curious as to what type of highly customized setup you are referring to. I hope to be able to move up to an enterprise class virtualization platform in the near future, but until then, I really need to come up with a low-cost solution that will work.

    Hi all,
Trying to sequence the Exchange Management Console (EMC) for Exchange 2007. It's a typical Microsoft .msc file so I had assumed it would work the same way my ConfigMgr Client sequencing went, however after three attempts using combination of changing the
VM type to Console, and changing the Filename attribute to %CSIDL_SYSTEM%\mmc.exe and passing the EMC console .msc file as a Parameter, I'm still stumped with this one.
Error on the client is the good old failed to load snapin.
The PowerShell Cmdlets snapin works and I can use that element of it for running Exchange PSCmdlets, just not the console.

Exchange can be virtualized but you may want to use physical machine for Mailbox and UM role becasue of performance issues during peak time. MS also has Server Virtualization Validation Program which will help you to choose virtualization products. I have
personally designed solution and its been working fine but MBX and UM is kept on physical machine considering performance issues.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794548%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx

Make sure you follow it so you are supported
There are also links for planning the memory, storage
Make sure you plan it well, think about it as a traditional server, it needs the resources regardless if it's a physical machine or virtual

Also, for planning storage you can use Mailbox storage calculator

    Hi All,
    I am going to upgrade Hyper-V R2 Server to Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V.
Anybody know how to upgrade it? In-place upgrade? Backup and Restore?
I understand that export and import is a typical answer. I would like to know if there is any other possible way to do so.

    Hi,

There is no way to upgrade from Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2008 R2. You need to perform a fresh installation.

By the way, you can either use backup/restore or export/import. Or you can create a new VM with the existing VHDs if you dont care
the configuration file of the VMs.

    Hi

I have used VMWare for quite some time. It is colorful, quite easy to use and ... expensive.

Now I have switched to OracleVM which is 100% free and for Linux based systems seems to be running very fast.

Having said that, my Windows guest installation works much better on VMware than on OracleVM - but I am still new to OVM so I hope the Win install on OVM can be significantly improved with correct config parameters...

    Hope it helps...

DB:3.03:Exchange 2010 Ad Schema Prepare Good Enough For Exchange Server 2007 Sp2 k9

    Hello,

Currently we have a single Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 (Version 8.1 Build 240.6) in our organisation.

Our objective is to move to Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) as soon as possible.

To do this requires that we upgrade our existing server to Exchange 2007 SP2 so that it can coexist with the Exchange Server 2010 when it is installed.
To install Exchange 2007 SP2 requires updating the Active Directory (AD) schema for Exchange 2007 SP2.
To install Exchange Server 2010 requires updating the Active Directory (AD) schema also.
I would like to know whether it is sufficient to just perform the procedure to prepare Active Directory and Domains using the Exchange Server 2010 setup and whether these updates will provide what is needed and necessary for Exchange 2007 SP2 operation.
In a TechNet Library article I read a note that said The Exchange 2007 schema also includes the Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 schema extensions.
Is it safe to assume that the Exchange 2010 schema and the Exchange Server 2010 SP1 schema also includes schema extensions for all previous Exchange versions like Exchange Server 2007, Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2007 SP2,
    Exchange Server 2007 SP3 ?

    Matt

DB:3.03:Exchange 2010 Ad Schema Prepare Good Enough For Exchange Server 2007 Sp2 k9

Lets say, if you have an E2k3,E2k7 and E2k10 environment. Even after youdecommissione2k3/e2k7 servers from your environment, you can very well install e2k3/e2k7 servers in future because the schema has already been extended for e2k3/e2k7 when
    you had e2k3/e2k7 installed previously.

If you were to do this and somehow get it to work, you would be in an unsupported configuration. Exchange does not support introducing legacy versions of the product once the last of those older versions has been removed. This is exactly the same as how
you are not allowed to start a greenfield (from scratch) 2010 deployment and then try to introduce 2007 later on.
    For the OP;
Go ahead and extend the schema to 2010 SP1 with setup.com /prepareschema.It will contain all necessary bits for Exchange 2007 SP2, Exchange 2007 SP3, Exchange 2010 RTM, and Exchange 2010 SP1. As Brian Desmond said, Schema Extensions
for Exchange are cumulative and contain all extensions of previous Exchange versions.Microsoft Premier Field Engineer, Exchange

    I found the solution....
This option of using static IP address from SSP will not work with SCVMM 2008 or even with SCVMM 2008 R2 SP1.
You must have the option of Static IP address pool on the SCVMM, and this optionwill beavailable only in SCVMM 2012.
I downloaded the SCVMM 2012 Beta, and tested it, seems a great product and really has the option of adding a Static IP Address Pool.
This will only work when using VM Templates.

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/05/16/announcing-enhanced-hardware-virtualization-support-for-exchange-2010.aspx

The Microsoft Exchange team is enhancing positioning by including additional supported scenarios regarding Exchange Server 2010 running under hardware virtualization software. As of today, the following support scenarios are being updated, for Exchange 2010
    SP1, and later:
The Unified Messaging server role is supported in a virtualized environment. Combining Exchange 2010 high availability solutions (database availability groups (DAGs)) with hypervisor-based clustering, high availability, or migration solutions that will move or automatically failover mailbox servers that are members of a DAG between
clustered root servers, is now supported.
Due to improvements we made in Exchange Server 2010 SP1, along with more comprehensive testing of Exchange 2010 in a virtualized environment, we are happy to provide this additional deployment flexibility to our customers. The updated support guidance applies
to any hardware virtualization vendor participating in the
Windows Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP).

DB:3.00:Exchange 2010, Can Nfs Be Used For Database And Log Files? x9

We currently run Exchange 2007 under ESXi 4.1 using NFS storage for the C: drives on our mailbox and hub transport/client access servers.

We present to the Exchange mailbox server two luns using Microsoft's iSCSI initiator. One lun is used for the Exchange database and one for Exchange log files.

We will be migrating to Exchange 2010 and could certainly use a similar setup. What I would rather do though is:
Carve out two more volumes on my FAS3020 and make them NFS sharesAdd these NFS shares to ESXiAdd two disks to my Exchange mailbox server using these two NFS shares for storageUse one disk for my Exchange database and one for log files

    Two questions:

Is this supported? According to this article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719.aspx) it may not be supported, here is the important paragraph:

"All storage used by an Exchange guest machine for storage of Exchange data must be block-level storage because Exchange 2010 doesn't support the use of network attached storage (NAS) volumes. Also, NAS storage that's presented to the guest as block-level storage via the hypervisor isn't supported."

Is anybody running Exchange 2010 using NFS for storage of database and logs files?

DB:3.00:Exchange 2010, Can Nfs Be Used For Database And Log Files? x9

I did find one person who is running Exchange 2010 under vSphere using NFS datastores for the Exchange database and log files and having no problems. We are currently using SME for our Exchange 2007 server but will not be using it for Exchange 2010. I will be using Commvault instead of SME. SMSQL, and SMVI so I get one spot where all of my backups occur.

Primo aggiornamento per la Service Pack 1 di Exchange Server 2010. L'Update Rollup 1 contiene una serie di piccole correzioni volte a sistemare di problemini usciti con la SP1, da questi problemi escluso il ruolo UM. Ecco i pi noti:

2028967 Event ID 3022 is logged and you still cannot replicate a public folder from one Exchange Server 2010 server to another
2251610 The email address of a user is updated unexpectedly after you run the Update-Recipient cmdlet on an Exchange Server 2010 server
978292 An IMAP4 client cannot send an email message that has a large attachment in a mixed Exchange Server 2010 and Exchange Server 2003 environment

Note tecnica per gli utilizzatori di Forefront
For those of you running Forefront, be sure you perform these important steps from the command line in the Forefront directory before and after this rollup's installation process. Without these steps, Exchange services for Information Store and Transport
will not start back up. You will need to disable ForeFront via fscutility /disable before installing the patch and then re-enable after the patch by running
fscutility /enable to start it up again post installation.

Migrating SBS 2008 to Windows Server 2012 R2 (no virtualization) and Exchange Server 2013 SP1

    (1) ADprep on SBS 2008 went fine
    (2) Installed necessary feature for Exchange (website “Part 1: Step-by-Step Exchange 2007 to 2013 Migration”)

    A) the first time I installed Exchange 2013, the setup succeeded, however there were several ecp/WinRM errors.
    B) restored Windows Server 2012 R2 to the state (2). Removed from AD (ADSI Edit)

    … CN=Services; CN=Exchange; CN=First Organization; CN=Exchange Administrator Group; CN=Servers
    delete new Win 2012 server

    Run Exchange setup again:

    The following error was generated when $error.Clear();

    if ($RoleStartTransportService)

    {

    start-SetupService -ServiceName MSExchangeTransport -MaxWaitTimeForRunningState 0:0:40

    }
was run: Service 'MSExchangeTransport' failed to reach status 'Running' on this server..

    Checked:
    - IPv6 is enabled, but was setup correctly after installing ADDS role)
    - Administrators (Group) is a member of the Exch. Trusted Subsystem

Probably there is an AD problem, after the restoration (B) (bare metal) of the Win 2012 server.

    DB:3.00:Sharepoint 2007 Installation On Exchange 2007 Server 78

Hi Everyone,I am new to SharePoint and have a question about installation.  I currently have two servers that are running Microsoft Exchange 2007 (one is the main server and the other is the edge server).  Both are running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 64 Bit.  I would like to install SharePoint 2007 on one of the servers.  I have read that it is difficult to get Exchange and SharePoint running on Exchange's main server, so I was wondering if it can be installed to the Edge Server.  If this is the case, is any sort of virtualization necessary?  Also, if it is installed on the Edge Server, does that mean the Active Directory would not work from the main server since it is in a different domain?  Please let me know the best path to take to be able to have both Products installed on the two servers.  It should also be noted that this is a test environment.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much in advance for all of your assistance.Sincerely,Andrew

    DB:3.00:Sharepoint 2007 Installation On Exchange 2007 Server 78

Hello Andrew,I would suggest installing your Sharepoint into VM. You can choose VMWARE Server or MS Virtual server with your existing W2k3 and they are both free.Than you can install on either machine depending on your load , hardware, location, etc.Once you have your VM up and running you than install your OS and Sharepoint just like on any box.Regards Ivan Bondy - MCPD, MCDBA, MCSA, MCTS - Sharepoint consultant

Circular logging and incremental backup doesn't work together since incremental backup is change only backup but circular logging will not make it happen because it uses same log file after 4th one.

DB:2.99:The Recommended Virtualisation Design For Exchange 2013 Dag dd

which option is the best practice for Virtualization Design for exchange 2013 DAG :
1- Exchange DAG server VM on Hyper-v host based cluster and having the DBs on ( CSV)
    or
2- Exchange DAG server on Stand alone VM and Using pass through Disk for Exchange DAG DBs
number of exchange dag is 2 and we have shared storage
    Thanks
    thend

DB:2.99:The Recommended Virtualisation Design For Exchange 2013 Dag dd

    Hi,
    Option-1:
Host-based failover clustering refers to any technology that provides the automatic ability to react to host-level failures and start affected virtual machines on alternate servers.
Use of this technology is supported given that, in a failure scenario, the virtual machine is coming up from a clod boot on the alternate host.

This technology helps to make sure that the virtual machine never comes up from a saved state that’s persisted on disk because it will be stale relative to the rest of the DAG members.

    Option-2:
    About the ‘shared storage’:
Generally, there are no special storage requirements specific to DAGs or mailbox database copies.
DAGs don’t require or use cluster-managed shared storage.
Cluster-managed shared storage is supported for use in a DAG only when the DAG is configured to use a solution that leverages the Third Party Replication API built into Exchange 2013.

    I prefer option-1 to option-2.
