I have a Latitude D620 with the nVidia Quadro NVS 256MB video card.  Aero features are enabled and working pretty well.  The only problem I've been having is with docking my laptop (in my Dell Docking station/port replicator)...when I dock for the first time in the morning, either from a cold boot or standby, after logging on, the video reverts to the laptop display (which is closed and in the docking station).  I have to undock, open the laptop, close it (to get it to go into standby) and then redock...then the video is displayed on my dock's external flat panel monitor...albeit at the wrong resolution. When I log in again, the resolution is correctly detected and all works well...until I undock and re dock the next day.

    Hey,
I have a friend who has had a IBook for a year or so now. He never turns it off as it is like faster booting when he goes to use it. He had it up for like 90days in a row. Anywho, I just got a dell. I usually just close the lid (puts the system into standby) when I'm moving to a different room. He use to stick it in the case that way and transport it that way. Is it safe to do that? Just out of curiousity. If I'm going to a friends down the street, would it be safe to just close it, pick it up and walk down to his house? Thanks.

    DB:3.01:Transporting I5150 While In Standby 78

As long as it is in standby, the HDD is off. But again when, for a reaseon or another, it should come out of standby by itself, the you can damage the HDD if you shake it too hard. So far I've had no problems with my Inspiron coming out from hibernation and if standby works fine, hibernation works in general as well, too. Use hibernation whenever possible instead of standby when carrying it.

There is also Dell's QUICKSET proggy that can often over-ride those youset in control panel power options...make sure the settings in there correspond to what you want the computer to do as well....or disable it altogether by opening MSCONFIG from the run dialogue and stopping it running at each startup.

Symptoms: Battery operation. 300m goes into standby. The ON light is on. No action can bring it back from standby and no action can turn it off.

Even taking the battery out doesn't help--the ON light dims, but doesn't go off. Only if I keep battery out for several minutes, does the standby mode break and I'm able to resume (so it looks like it wass suspended, even though the light stayed on!). I have no weird drivers installed, the machine is pretty much as I got it from Dell. I set it up so that it goes into suspend mode when the power button is pressed.

DB:2.78:300m Cannot Return From Standby fd

I experienced this exact same problem on a brand new 300m system. I called Dell technical support but they could not give a satisfactory explanation on why this was happening, and all their suggestions didn't work.

So I returned my unit and exchange for another unit -- to my dismay it also had the same problem -- randomly not coming out of standby. I tried EVERYTHING -- upgrading all drivers to the latest, uninstalled software that I don't want, upgrade to the latest BIOS -- still no luck.

Now I don't know what to do -- I don't think I have a choice but to return the unit and go for another vendor.

I am really frustrated because I had to spend so much time on a brand new system, yet at the end I couldn't get it to work.

Dell should really ship systems that just work.

I've read a lot of posts on "standby" in this forum and most are related to going into and coming out of standby issues. My problem is different. I have an Inspiron 8200 P4 1.8Ghz 512MB RAM. (Win XP Pro)

My laptop sits at home on all the time plugged into AC power. I have all my AC power options set to "never" in power management (other than turning off the monitor). I use remote desktop from work to connect to my laptop. I'm finding that when I can't connect, I have to ask my wife to go check it and its in standby mode (no blinking lights on it except the battery charge). This started about 2 weeks ago. I've been using RDP for about two months.

According to my settings in Windows, this shouldn't be happening. I guess my question is, will the computer automatically go into standby (or hibernate) if its overheating or if the battery is dying? That's all I can come up with. I ran the Dell diagnostics CD and whether its completely accurate or not, it stated that my temp and battery (as well as everything else) check out OK.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I've got a relatively new 600m that's having some standby & hibernate problems.

When the system is sitting in the port replicator the system never goes into standby.

When the system has been ejected from the port replicator and is in standby, it never seems to hibernate.

I have been running SpeedswitchXP ... which adjusts the CPU speed fine ... but it still doesn't seem to obey the power profile.

I emailed Microsoft and paid them $35 for their advice. I am still communicating with them but have gotten some useful hints. Here's what they said to do to try to isolate the problem:

Step 1: Clean Boot (If you are using a dial-up connection, the network may not work in a Clean Boot state.)
    ============
    1. Click Start, click Run, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.
    2. Under the Service tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then uncheck all the services listed.
    3. Under the General tab, put a check next to "Selective Startup", please click to uncheck "Load Startup Items" and click OK.
    4. Please choose Yes to restart the computer.
    5. Please test the issue.

If Step 1 does not help, let's go to Step 2.

Step 2: Check the Human Interface Device (HID) service:
    ==================
    1. Go to Start - Run, input "services.msc" and click OK.
    2. On the right side, locate to HID service.

    3. If the service is started, please double-click each service to open the Properties. Set the start type to be Disabled and press the button.

    4. Test the issue again.

I disabled the HID service and have seen no change in performance so I have left it that way. I have gotten the computer to hibernate automatically, but not always. Startup options don't seem to matter, though I alway try to keep them to a miminum anyway. Right now I'm testing the system with different apps open and closed.

I spoke with Dell tech support via chat this morning and they referred me to QuickSet, but that's just a Dell interface to various Control Panel options. Regardless, I reset the power options using QuickSet, and still have the laptop go into standby. From what I know, I'm guessing there is some system service that's running (Dell? DB:2.64:Docking Video Problem On D620 And Vista mm

DB:2.64:Xscreensaver Stopped Working Since Last Xorg Update aa

    Hello,

since the last xorg update a few days ago, xscreensaver seems not working correctly anymore. Im using the lock and the power management functions. I use it with the Blank screen only function.

If the lock screen after field is checked, the screen is never locked and the display never blanks and goes never into standby or suspend mode. If the lock screen after field is NOT checked, the screen doesnt blank, but goes into standby/suspend mode after the configured time.

Can anybody confirm this strange behaviour of xscreensaver?

    Greetings, indianahorst

Next very annoying problem with xscreensaver: Im using VLC as video player with the option disable screensaver activated. When I have played a video from an external USB drive and then try to umount it, then umounting is blocked by several processes of xdg-screensaver and sleep and I have to kill them by hand.

Tried to get our sales rep to follow-up on this issue.  I'm curious whether others have noticed that not only is the a/c adapter that is included with the Latitude D620 non-grounded, but the plug that goes into the adapter housing is too long.  It doesn't seat flush with the adapter housing making it impossible to wrap the cable properly.  It also seems too easy to pull out.  This seems like a defect in the construction...or a disconnect between the adapter manufacturer and the cable manufacturer.  Anyone else notice this and have you contacted Dell?

    Hi,

I notice there is no Windows 7 driver for Dell d620. There may be hardware compatibility issue. Please confirm with Dell support if Windows 7 is supported on this
    computer model.

Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.

I suggest updating the driver of COM port in Device Manager, updating the latest chipset and BIOS from Dell. Also, try to perform
clean boot and disable antivirus, firewall to
    avoid any blocking.

    Low battery will.

Power Management has settings for what happens with low battery, usually warnings and then StandBy then hibernate
or shut down at specified % levels.

Fan is temperature controlled, if it overheats, a CPU protection will kick in to shut down to prevent damage.

I have a Dell Latitude D620 Laptop. About a month ago, it was given to me by my father and he said it just needs rebuilt. Hes used it for a while and its never had any issues prior. The battery in it was indeed bad, but it worked fine while plugged in. I rebuilt the operating system, installed all the drivers, rebooted several times during the process. Once i was finished, i had a spare D620 battery laying around that i wasnt sure was good or not. I decided to take out the known bad one, put in this other one and see if its good. Upon swapping, i plugged in the power, and nothing happened when i hit the power button. No lights, nothing. So I took it out, put in the known bad battery, and hit power again.... now nothing comes on even with the battery that just allowed it to boot 2 minutes prior... I have reseated the ram, tried with no battery, different charger and still nothing. It sat for about a month now as I was frustrated with it. Today, I found a battery module for the D620 that sits in the CD-ROM bay. I installed it, and now when plugged in and I hit the power button, the battery light came on as orange, not flashing, just solid. When I let go of the power button it goes off. As long as the power button is held in, it stays on. Any ideas what is wrong? I cant seem to find any clues

    Hi robwoods0506,

    Welcome to the community.

I apologize for all the inconvenience this issue has caused and promise you that I will do my best to resolve this issue to your satisfaction.

Kindly remove the battery from the system and connect only the AC adapter. And check if system powers on the AC adapter only or any lights come up on the system.

If it still doesnt power on you should try checking it with a different AC adapter. If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us.

I am tech support at a company that replaced all it's laptops with Dell Latitudes D620. I've seen many systems that are getting extremely hot when put in standby mode and placed in bags. After further investigation it appears that when this happens the laptop never really goes into standby mode. In the past with our IBM T30's they would goto standby regardless of what programs were open. These systems seem to shutdown okay UNLESS you are accessing a file that is on the network. I've verified this issue when users areusing an Excel file stored on our network. I'm not sure what other applications it has an issue with. I've searched Microsoft's KB and was not able to find any documents about office causing standby issues and since it worked okay with our IBM's I"m thinking it's a Dell issue? Any suggestions?

I left for dinner for a few hours. Before I left, I shut the lid of my D620 and left it on the couch. When I got back a few hours later, I heard the fan of my laptop running full throttle and my laptop was really really hot. I opened my laptop and it didn't resume from standby. I had to keep the power button depressed for 5 seconds to cause a reboot. I did have one excel file opened. Don't know if that's what prevented my laptop from going into standby. I usually don't have this issue (and usually don't have an excel file opened on my laptop).

Can you please give me some advice? If you need the other Problem Signatures I can also provide these.

    Thanks

DB:2.59:Moved Dell D620 Into A D630 Box And Am Now Unable To Boot. jk

When NT derived versions of Windows are transferred to different hardware, without an identical or almost identical CPU and chip set, they will generally not be bootable. The HAL (hardware abstraction layer) is customized during the original
installation. In Windows XP we can usually resolve this by doing an in-place repair reinstallation. Unfortunately that is not an option in Vista and Windows 7.

There are two backup products on the market that can be used to transfer a system to different hardware -

(assuming the Windows version permits it and is not a BIOS locked OEM product for example) - Acronis Universal Restore (very expensive) and the more affordable Paragon Backup Recovery 11 Home

Other than those possibilities, you need to back up your data and do a clean reinstallation of Windows 7 to use the new hardware.

    Thanks
I backed up and reinstalled and all is good again. I used the Paragon product which was very good

Just to nitpick a little, the symptoms nabogabs reported are different from your symptoms plus he/she had the wrong driver, so I don't think you have the same issue.

Try this the next time before you reinstall the driver:

Go to Services (Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services) and check that Windows Audio is enabled, set to automatic, and running. Audio won't work without this Service turned on. If this Service repeatedly shuts off even if set to run automatically, then there may be a problem in Windows instead of the driver, but when you re-install the driver it is automatically turning the Audio Service back on so one concludes that the driver is the problem.

If this is the situation, Microsoft has a patch for the it, Microsoft KB927891, but I think I would try System Restore first to try to undo whatever caused the problem in the first place.

My mouse (Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer for Bluetooth) would sometimes randomly lose connection with my D620. It would sometimes work again like 5 minutes later, but otherwise I have to reboot or use the touchpad. The Microsoft Bluetooth Stack shows the mouse as connected and it can see the service.

Any ideas? The BT module was moved from my D610 to my D620, and I had been using Vista on my D610 with the Microsoft BT Stack and this never happens. Do I need to buy a Bluetooth 355 or 360 (which one comes with the D620?)?

Only other thing I can think is to make sure you've got the newest drivers for your video card, Windows patched up, and your monitor's driver/inf file installed. If that dosen't do it...I don't know, weird. (Unless there's some program on your system preventing it from using power saving settings? Or maybe something in the BIOS?)

DB:2.56:After Host Resumes From Standby Message Says Vt Isn't Enabled px

    Hi,

I saw a previous discussion on this problem from several years ago. I'm wondering if anyone has a solution. Here is the situation. I'm using VMWare Workstation 7.1.4 on a 64-bit Windows 7 host. Everything is peachy until the host goes into standby mode and resumes. After resumming from standby my 64-bit guess OS's (Win7, XP, 2003 Server) won't startup. A message indicates the CPU supports VT but it is not enabled. This is nonsense. I've checked doubled, checked, and triple checked the BIOS.

    More on the environment:

    Machine: Dell inspiron 530

    CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q9300

Host OS: Windows 7 Ultimate w/SP1 and all current updates

BIOS: Phoenix 1.0.18 (Latest available from Dell. I checked yesterday.)

Here is another interesting note. Prior to last week I was running Windows Server 2008 R2 on this machine. My drive blew out so I had to reinstall an OS. This time I went with Windows 7 I never had this problem when I was running the Server 2008 x64 or Server 2003 x64 before that.

Any suggestions? It's a pain having to restart the OS just to get my VMWare Workstation back up and running properly. Maybe this Dell box is just a piece of crap...

    Thanks,

    John

    DB:2.56:Laptop Won't Revert From Standby... k9

I somewhat recently installed a new hard drive and two new sticks of RAM to my Inspiron 1100, giving her 100 GB of disk space and 1024 MB of memory. Everything works splendidly, I have all the updates, and I have no complaints but this:

She won't come back from standby.

Actually, it's more than that. I first talked to the Dell Chat peoples, who did everything they could before advising me to pay 60 bucks for the HelpDesk to fix the problem. I don't really have that kind of money to spend, so I figured I would wait until college and get the IT peoples to help. Here I am at college, and I figured I would try this here forum to solve my problem before resorting to the ITs.

What happens is, my computer won't come back from standby. I close her lid to make it go into standby that way, and she seems to go into it fine. But when I open the lid, she is supposed to come back to normal, right? She doesn't. There's just a black screen (powered, not monitor-off black) that won't go away until I press the power button to make her hibernate, and once she is in hibernation, another press of the power button brings me back to where she was.

What else happens is, the computer is timed to go into standby after a certain time period of her being idle, and after a certain time period in standby, she is to hibernate. Standard stuff, right? Well, she doesn't do that anymore. Her monitor goes off fine, but then eventually she doesn't go into standby; she simply locks up or something like that. Pressing the power button to send her to hibernation does not work. The only thing that works isnly holding the power button for four seconds to turn the computer completely off.

The Dell Chat peoples had me run all these various tests (some of which I ran twice), all of which came up passing, no problems. As far as I know, and I'm pretty sure, all the latest drivers are installed. This problem never occurred before upgrading the hard drive and RAM.

What the Hades can be done? Full functionality is a must, of course, especially at college.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ted

Our Dell Dimension 8300 works fine for about 3 hours, then suddenly goes into standby after about 3 hours.  The power light flashes at this point and the keyboard lights remain.  I have checked in power management and ensured that it is set to never hibernate.  I have done a full McAfee virus scan and found no issues, same for spyware.

    Rebooting the PCdoes not succeed.

I have looked inside the box and there was very little dust accumulation, and I have cleaned out what was present.

If any one has suggestions of what the issue is and how to resolve it, that would be much appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

DB:2.56:Dimension 8300 Goes Standby After 3 Hours, Then Flashes Power Light 7k

Remember that PSU failures are not always hard failures. In fact, I have yet to see a PSU just fail so that it won't go on.  In both cases I've dealt with, the PSU still appeared to work enough that I didn't think it was the PSU.

It could be the PSU is shutting down once it heats up enough.  It could also be some other component that is causing the PSU to shut down as it heats up.  I think overheating is the most likely candidate, but I doubt it is the usual suspects (e.g. the CPU).

DB:2.54:Usb Hubs Not Recognized In Windows 7 8k

    Hi,

    a. Has any USB Device ever worked in Windows 7/Vista?

    b. Do you get any error message along with the error code?

    c. Do you see anything out of the ordinary in
device manager ? (i,e exclamation marks)
Try a different USB port and check what happens.
In the meantime, follow the steps given below in the order of appearance nad check if it helps in resolving the issue.

    Step 1:

I’d recommend you to uninstall and re-install the USB controller and check if that does the trick.

Use Device Manager to uninstall and re-install all the USB controllers. This lets the controllers recover the USB port from its unresponsive condition. The USB controllers represent the USB ports in Device Manager.

To uninstall and re-install the USB controllers, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, type device manager in the Start search box and hit Enter.

    2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Note You might have to scroll down the list to find this item.

    3. Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click Uninstall to remove it.

    4. Repeat the above step for each USB controller that is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

    5. Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.

    6. Check the USB device to see whether it is working.

    Step 2:
As a second step, I'd suggest you to run
this fix it and check if it helps.
    Step 3:

Additionally, you may re-install the chipset drivers and check if that fixes the issue. Visit the manufacturer’s website and download and install the latest Windows 7 compatible drivers. Visit the manufacturer’s website and download and install the latest
    Windows 7 compatible drivers.

Is there anyone who knows why my WPN111 wireless adapter loose the connection with the access point when system goes in standby and never restore the connection when system wake up untill I remove the adapter and plug back in into USB port?

    Any help much appreciated!

See the other thread about similar problems with the WPN111 - I think it must enjoy the human touch since they all seem to need regular removing and plugging back in!!!

Please ask the other customers on the Notebook Video board. Maybe they know of a way to generate the higher resolutions. Also, the Notebook Liaisons will see your post there.

When ready for standby -- closing the lid or passage of time -- The w500 goes to a screen that says "preparing to Standby" or something similar BUT never goes to standby -- I have to re-boot. What could be blocking it???

DB:2.53:D620 Atg Rear Ports Cover On Regular D620? z9

Anybody know if the ATG D620's rear ports cover (Dell part #YK235) will work on a regular D620? I'm interested in getting one for my D620 as I rarely use the rear ports and it could help prevent dust from getting into the ports.

    Thanks!

Oh, and if anyone has a ATG and wouldn't mind posting pics of the cover, that would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi All...

Have an issue with around 20 610's that despite the power management settings being set to Never for standby, the system still goes into standby!
These settings are being applied via a reg import at logon but for some reason the system doesn't seem to be activating them.

We have to disable standby as the encrypted disks in these systems do not support it. I have also looked in the bios but can't see anything that disable standby....HELP!

DB:2.53:Laptop Hard Drives And System Standby 93

    Hi Folks,
When my D620 goes into 'standby' what is the state of the Hard Drive. My understanding was that HD would withdraw the heads to the park zone and then spin down the hard drive. Am I correct? Is this the same state the HD goes to when the system hibernates?

Yes I know this is a simple one. :smileytongue: Humour me I'm just settling in :smileytongue:

    Thanks inadvance, Al

As far as I know, you are correct on both counts.  Both standby and hibernate would spin down the hard drives and park the heads.
