    Hi,
When you are using TS Session Broker with a Server Farm of four servers and hardware load balancers, is there a way to change the port used to connect to the Terminal Services server farm from using port 3389 (RDP) to port 1000? The goal is to reduce or
eliminate unwanted user connections to the server farm in the event a user knows the server farm name or IP address to connect in and since port 3389 is a known RDP session port, unwanted users can connect in. Additionally what other security measures or mechanisms
can be done to meet this goal? Any other options or suggestions in doing this? Thank you.

    Hi,
Based on your description the client software on the thin client device does not fully support connection broker redirection. Other users have complained about this issue. Looking at the specs your thin client has RDesktop 1.6, this software
    is not written by Microsoft.
I recommendyou contact HP support and ask them for an updated image that fully supports Server 2008 R2, or at least properly supports connection broker redirection.
There is a solution posted for a different hp thin client whereby you update it to run the freerdp client:

DB:2.58:Terminal Server Losing Membership In Session Directory/Broker k7

We have a terminal server farm with six terminal servers. Session Broker is installed on a backend server. Occasionally, a server will appear to lose it's membership in session broker. While a user will have a disconnected session, they will be directed
to a new server and begin a new session. It will only affect users who had sessions on the server which appears to have lost its membership. It does not affect all terminal servers.
The fix we've found is to run gpupdate /force on the terminal server, forcing it back in the farm. The event log on the terminal server indicates it joined the farm upon executing gpupdate. There are no indications in the event log of either the terminal
server or the session broker server that the terminal server ever left the farm. We havesession broker logging enabled. However, the log is rather cryptic and there's no support from Microsoftwhat-so-ever for understanding it.
Can someone give me some ideas as to what I should be looking for in order to resolve this?

DB:2.58:Terminal Server Losing Membership In Session Directory/Broker k7

I believe I solved the problem with the Terminal Server licensing. We upgraded the schema in this domain from 2003 to 2008 to 2008 R2 (over time). For some reason, it delegate permission for the Terminal Server Licensing Server group to read and write
to each user object. I will keep you updated. Thank you for helping me. I'm going to point the terminal servers at a single licensing server.

    Hi,
The AD user properties need to be changed to the new location for the TS profile, maybe you can use PowerShell to do this for multiple user at once.
Move the profiles to the new fileserver and restore user rights and share right. Maybe there is a smart way to move these with the current user right but those kind of things will most likely be discussed in the File Services and Storage forum.

I was wrong, SP8 does not fix this.

If you use the ip address of the server, the first connection gets in. Then if another user logs in using the ipaddress he kicks out the first user. If the first user then tries to traverse the tree he gets a login prompt, but can\'t login until the second user logs out.

So, CIFS still does not work on Terminal server. I also tested this on Server 2008 with the same result.

Do you add the NLB Roles to all RDS servers? Do you do anything with the Session Broker?
NLB and SBLB: This requires Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services and Windows Server 2008 Session Broker. Due to the existence of the NLB heartbeat, there is better detection of offline servers.

As Trevor said you can't have the different servers talking to different SQL servers for the Config Database. YOU can point the content databases at different listeners and therefore have different Web Apps in different Availability Groups.
But I don't really see the benefit in trying to do that other than supporting different levels of DR for different service levels.Paul Stork SharePoint Server MVP

DB:2.44:How To Connect Diskless Terminal To Windows 2003 Terminal Server....? c8

You may want system streaming or OS streaming.
    Search things such as
    HP Image Manager
    Neoware Image Manager
    Ardence
    Citrix Provisioning Server
    gPXE iSCSI boot
    Windows XP embedded remote boot
    Wyse Streaming Manager
    CCBoot
    iPXE with AoE boot
    diskless linux how-to
    Linux NFS root

All these technologies/products will make it possible to PXE-boot (using DHCP/Bootp and TFTP services on the server side) and then load some OS on teh terminals. What you do with this remote-booted (aka streamed OS) is up to you. You can install some RDP/ICA/VNC
client to it and use it as a remote desktop, for instance.

    DB:2.43:Farm Connection Help kf

    Hi all,
We have one farm which includes two Windows 2008 R2 terminal servers
We create A record farm which two terminal server names in a DNs server
    Farm A server1
    Farm A server2
But, when users connect to farm, they always connect to the server 2.
I want users to connect to the server1 which is at production site.
How do I make users to connect server1 first at production sitewhen they connect to farm?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Clarence,
I did an extensive tests in these days.
No matter what I try it, it alwasys connects me to the server 2 first and certainly I log off.
I changed relative weight 600 on the server 1 and 50 on the server 2. Still, connects me to the server 2 first?
    Will relative weight work?
    Thank you.

    Is it possible to connect two ASCII Terminal such;

    Terminal+Router --(IP Network)-- Router+Terminal

Terminals are connnected via ASYNC Serial line.

And if so, how do you configure routers such that; Terminals can talk to each other through a TERMINAL EMULATION Program such as HYPERTERMINAL.

DB:2.43:Two Ascii Terminal Talking With Each Other Through Ip Network k3

We have used a serial tunnel interface in the past. It works, but if you have a line give you problems the tunnel is sensitive and will go down. The interfaces have to be reset on both ends to bring it back up. A better way is a device to convert serial to ip:

    My question is:
When i add a user to local admin group and farm admin at sp2010 he can not connect at this server over sql managment studio to the local sql server.
I have to add them manually at management studio, after i have done this, he can connect to the databases and sp on.

I have finally configured my RDP correctly however I am unable to connect to my farm (round robin dns) through the gateway. If I add the ts-group to the RDP then I can connect to the gateway itself but this isnt using the farm. The session broker is set up on both the farm servers. My SSL certificate works on webaccess and I can connect to the ts-farm without the gateway over hardware VPN. I have trawled through the gateway configuration on MS and on windowsecurity.com but can't see where I am going wrong.I have posted this as part of another thread and I will say when I get an answer in either. I am just getting desperate now - work demands etc.I realised that I had conflicting host file entries and have resolved that...my rdp error is...Terminal Services connection authoristaion policy (TS CAP) is preventing connection to the remote computer through TS Gateway, possibly due to one of the following reasons:* You do not have permission to connect to the TS Gateway Server* You used password authentication but the ts gateway server is expecting smart card auth (or visa versa)Thanks

David, On each terminal server you have to tell it where session broker is installed (in RDP-Tcp setting in TS Config).  The documentation says you can use NETBIOS, FQDN or IP address.  I bet you used FQDN, as I like to do. But you may be experience the same as I: after a while Session Broker cant find the terminal servers.  When I change this to NETBIOS name it magically finds the terminal servers.  Let me know if this helps you. Thanks,Hope this helps,

    DB:2.42:Configure Dedicated Redirectors fa

I want follow the instructions to setup dedicated redirectors, but I don't understand step 2. WhenI deny logons to a terminal server in a loadbalanced farm, i would expect to get an error message like No login
    is possible.
    Configure
    dedicated redirectors (optional)
When you register the IP address of each terminal server in the farm to a single terminal server farm name in DNS, incoming Terminal Services clients will try to
connect to the first IP address for the farm name that is returned by DNS. The terminal server that receives this initial connection request acts as the redirector.

To increase session redirection performance in a large terminal server farm, you can configure terminal servers to be dedicated redirectors. These servers will process
incoming requests, but will not accept user sessions. To configure dedicated redirectors, you must do the following:
    1.
Create DNS round robin entries for the terminal servers that you want to use as dedicated redirectors. When you do so, you must map the IP address of each terminal server that you are using as a dedicated redirector to the terminal server farm name in
DNS. (The farm name is the virtual name that clients will use to connect to the terminal server farm.) The farm name must not match an existing server name in ADDS.
    2.
Configure the servers to deny new user logons. For more information about how to deny new user logons, see
Deny logons to a terminal server in a
    load-balanced farm.
Because these dedicated redirectors have no user sessions, they do not require roaming profiles or any installed programs. This enables a faster logon experience,
and makes the server easier to manage and more reliable.
The following diagram provides a more detailed representation of the traffic flow. In the diagrammed scenario, two terminal servers are deployed as dedicated redirectors.
(In a large terminal server farm, you may want to have more than two dedicated redirectors.) The terminal servers will redirect initial connection requests, but will not host any sessions (that is, they are configured to deny new user logons). Only the two
redirectors have host resource records in DNS that map to the terminal server farm name. All terminal servers in the farm (including the redirectors) are configured to use the same farm in TS Session Broker (in the Terminal Services Configuration settings).

    Configure
    dedicated redirectors (optional)
When you register the IP address of each terminal server in the farm to a single terminal server farm name in DNS, incoming Terminal Services clients will try to connect to the first IP address for the farm name

I know this is old but someone else may want an answer/clarification:
Presuming you have a connection broker server and one or more RDS Sessions Hosts servers.
-if you have one (or more) server that acts as your gateway/connection broker you would install the RDS Sesison service on it and configure it as a dedicated redirector
-you point the DNS record for your Session Host Farm to the Dedicated Redirector/CB (rather than to each session host server)

-the connection request and authentication happens on the CB/DR server and because the DR will not create new sessions it attempts to redirect the users session to one of the participating/registered farm servers (note that you do not assign your Farm
DNS records to the sessions hosts, the CB/DR services work together directly to track the Farm sessions and redirect them to active session host servers as appropriate)
    Advantage:
-a marginally faster logon (a few seconds by my observation)

-if one session host server goes offline users will not be erroneously directed to it via random DNS round robin (the DR service seems to be aware when one session host stops responding and removes it from the farm server pool until it is online again, which
is useful for doing maintenance or dealing with problems)

DB:2.42:Rd Farm Site Not Accessible Over The Vpn Or Direct Access 81

    Hi,

Thanks for posting in Windows Server Forum.

Initially I would say that, it’s not recommend to connect your Rd Web access url over the internet without RD gateway installed. The RD gateway work as tunnel for rdp request over the internet. A recommended configuration is to place both the RD Gateway server
and the RD Web Access server in the perimeter network, with the Remote Desktop Session Host (RD Session Host) servers that host RemoteApp programs behind the internal firewall.

Configure the Remote Desktop Web Access Server to Allow Access from the Internet

Apart as you have not installed RD Gateway and if want to access over internet, make sure that you have open and forward TCP port 3389 to that server and from firewall end.

    DB:2.41:Certificates For Tss In A Farm m9

I'm having trouble figuring out how to go about setting proper certificates for server authentication in a Windows Server 2008 terminal server farm. I have 3 2008 terminal servers joined to a farm. This farm is having its load balancing handled by a 2008 TS Session Broker + a Cisco ACE (we are using the TS routing tokens). Now, in order for a client to reach the TSs in the farm they have to RDP to TS.company.com. The Session Broker + a Cisco ACE are working properly for Load Balancing and Session reconnection, but when clients connect they usually get a message saying that the identity of the remote computer cannot be verified..... The message also shows the name in the certificate (the auto generated one) from the remote computer, TS0#.company.com. What I have seen in other forums is that I have to get a certificate for each of the servers that is globally trusted and has the Subject Alternate Name of the TS farm (TS.company.com). I'm fairly inexperienced with dealing with certificates andI do not know how to generate a CSR with the SAN attribute. Also, is there a way to generate CSRs without having to install IIS7, maybe there is a utility I can use instead? Any help would be appreciated.

    DB:2.41:Certificates For Tss In A Farm m9

In reference to the last post I pretty much solved my problem by purchasing a single UCC certificate for the TSfarm, importing it along with the private key onto each terminal server in the farm, and setting the rdp connection to use that certificate. I used OpenSSL to generate a private key and csr for the the TS farm where the common name was name_of_farm.domain.local and had DNS SAN attributes of: name_of_farm.domain.local, name_of_farm, TS1.domain.local, TS2.domain.local, and TS3.domain.local. I now don't get any errors when connecting to these servers, though I do have import the certificate for Comodo's Intermediate CA for Windows 7 clients to connect without error. I wonder if Microsoft would consider including the intermediate certificate in their updates.......

DB:2.41:Port Forward To Rd Farm Without Gateway xx

To start out with: I know straight port forwards into a terminal server are bad, but unfortunately have to make one work.
I am replacing an old single 2003 Terminal server with a 2008R2 farm of two servers setup with a connection broker (TS1, TS2 and BROKER). All of this works great internally with a farm DNS name of TS.
I now need to allow users outside the network to connect in through the firewall. In the past this was just a port forward, but that does not seem to work. If a user is forwarded to TS1 and the broker thinks their session is on TS2 it disconnects
them. Is there a way around this?

REASONING: I have Doctors that have to connect using hospital terminals that are out of my control, unfortunately these terminals don't support RD Gateways.

DB:2.41:Port Forward To Rd Farm Without Gateway xx

    Hi,
When using the default ip redirection setting the ip address of the RDSH servers needs to be reachable by the client either directly or via RD Gateway. If you want to set it up so that RDG or VPN is not required each server would need to have a public
ip so that the client PCs would be able to reach the address. To reduce risk you would obviously set your hardware firewall so that only RDP traffic would pass through to each server's public NIC. In the case of your firewall is not able to do
this at bare minimum configure Windows Firewall with Advanced Security so that the only port open on the public NICs is RDP (by default tcp 3389, but you may/should change this to something else).
In order to do what you want without each server having a public ip youcould use a hardware load balancer that is RDP-aware such asa kemp technologies unit. If you use one of these you would not need to run RD Connection Broker sincethe
balanceris smart enough to handle all of the required functionality.
    Does the above make sense?

DB:2.41:Numlock On T5335z Thin Client Rdp Connection Not Working 17

    Hi,

I have a problem with the t5335 thin clients we rolled out today.

First of all it was reported that the minus-key on the keypad was not working when working in excel (all other keys of the keypad work). I tracked down the problem to the numlock not being active for the session and got the information that the RDP-connection has to be established using the -N option.

however - I cannot define any RDP-options in the GUI. Also pressing the numlock-key does not help.

The problem could be reproduced with any thin connected to our Windows2003 Terminal server. Just open a new excel sheet, click on a cell and type "-". you will see nothing happens. It does work with +*/ etc.

    Thank you

    Hi,

in addition to the problem above I got some more information:

Using thet5325z with Swiss-German Layout everything went smooth

Using the t5335 with the attached config everything goes haywire

We kept on testing and also the upper-case umlauts do not work. Also - BEFORE connecting to the RDP-session, typing the characters in the login-mask works. It has to be the keyboard layout which is used for RDP-connections not being the proper one.

Is this forum being monitored by HP staff? I will have to downgrade all the clients we solled out if I can't find a solution soon

and will not let me, is disabled.
As I can make this change, ie a

    Hello Everyone,
Here is the my setup: three win2k3 r2 sp2 terminal servers setup in a TS farm with session directory enabled. Wewere not using terminal server profiles, so when a user logs in to each TS they have a different profile. As you can imagine
this has turned into an administrative nightmare for our app support team.
I have recently turned on terminal server profiles via the GPO under computer cofigurationwindows componentsterminal servicesset path for ts roaming profiles but it has not applied. i have run gpupdate /force a number of times and I have
also rebooted the TS's. Its been almost a day now. I began digging further in the GPO that applies to these servers and i noticed that under computer configurationsystemuser profiles we have allow only local user profiles enabled.
The reason for this is becasue we have some users from our German office who connect to these terminal servers and their administrator has configured roaming profiles at the AD account level. Would this most likely be the reason that our ts profiles
are not applying? If it is how can you enable ts profiles without having the terminal servers use roaming profiles that may be configured at the account level. Ie. When our German user logs into our TS I want them to use OUR TS profile and
NOT thier roaming profile that is configured on thier AD account.

    Thanks in advance.

DB:2.40:Terminal Server Profiles Not Applying x1

I setup a test machine and deployed a test OU with the same settings. Afterdisabling the allow only local user profiles the TS Profile path work while at the same time not using the roaming profile which was configured on the account.

    Thank-you very much.

I'm not sure if this is possible, but I figured this would be the place to ask. :) We currently use a farm of terminal servers for several internal thin clients as well remote connections. My understanding is that our remote users can use their client printers through an RDP session by default. Is it possible to remove this option? More to the point, some of our remote users are our employees but others are 3rd party users that connect from different companies and need access to our network. Is it possible to split these users in to two groups: those that can use client printers on our terminal servers and those that can't? Ideally, we would like to limit the ability to use client printers to just our remote employees. Sorry if this doesn't make sense. I'm barely able to wrap my head around it myself. :)

DB:2.40:Terminal Servers And Limiting Client Printers dk

No worries. I totally forgot about that too. Obviously. :) Actually you mentioning the RDP-TCP properties in the TSC is what got me headed in the right direction. The client settings there were set to Use connection settings from user settings. Then just a little digging around the user account and there it was. Thanks!

To secure terminal connections from our branch offices i made certificates for each server in the farm. In Terminal Service Configuration Connections RDP-Tcp properties General tab Security section Certificate i'm selecting prepared certificate for each server. In same security section for Security Layer i'm selecting Negoshiate option, for Encryption level - Client Compatable. I'm choosing these options because we have Windows XP and Windows Vista for terminal clients. Everything works fine until first restart of servers. I can't connect with Windows Vista clients. I found that after restart selected certificate is not selected in RDP-Tcp security section, the terminal server using Autogenerated certificate but there is no such a certificate. After that i check that in my RDP client for Server  authentication i have Connect and don't warn me ... So where is the problem?  Before that installation a made tests with Server 2008 SP1 Enterprise and there was not such a problem with certificates of servers the difference between to installations is Service Pack 2 for Server 2008. What is the difference between token based redirection and IP based redirection? MS seems to recommend using only the IP redirection and provides very few pros (none) for the token based redirection. Ive configured our Terminal Services farm with a dedicated redirector and Im not using Network Load Balancing to distribute the initial connection load. The dedicated redirector is a virtual machine on a Hyper-V cluster to provide the failover protection. Users connect to the farm address which is the dedicated redirector with logons disabled, users are redirected to one of the other servers in the farm. The issue Im trying to over come is when a server goes off line for one reason or another; the users can not reconnect to another farm member until they reboot their thin client or clear the DNS cache. Would token based redirection be beneficial to a farm with a dedicated redirector?

    Thanks,

    DB:2.39:Token Based Load Balancing p7

I was operating under a misunderstanding
I was under the impression that once the client was redirected to a terminal server that all client initiated connection requests were sent to the terminal server, IP address redirection. Apparently there is more intelligence designed into it then I originally knew. In my configuration, each and every connection request bounces off the dedicated redirector first and is then redirected I see the light, thanks
Im assuming that the registry settings only need to be made on the Session Broker?
    This is awesome, thanks

    Hi All
I am using Forefront TMG, Terminal Server Gateway 2008 (not R2), Session Broker to provide a Terminal Server 2008 Farm (using with RSA Agent).
My problem is to disable the network level authenticationon terminal server gateway, to get directly to the logon sreen of the TS Server. Currently the user has to type in the windows password to get access, after then type in rsa authentication. This
is not really useable and users are disappointed.
Now my question: Is it possible to disable network level authentication for RDP 6.1 (Windows XP/SP3) and RDP 7 (Windows 7) to make it possible get directly access onto the logon sreen of the terminal server?
I made alos some test and recognized, that in my eyes the problem seems to be on the TS Gateway. Because I can connect internally to the session broker, which works fine. If I use TS Gateway, first prompt is the user credential of windows user. I entered
following lines on my RDP Connection:
    autoreconnection enabled:i:1
    enablecredsspsupport:i:0
    authentication level:i:0
    prompt for credentials:i:0
Unfortunately it is not working and also notif uses RemoteApp and TS Web (Computergroup Members (TS Srv. and TMG) of TS Server Group). User has to be logon at twice.
Has enybody an idea to make this more confortable?

You need to create users in Active Directory and than store the profiles on one of your servers.
Than all the user profiles will be the same on all servers.
I'm not sure if its possible to balance the sessions from the first- and the second TS. but my experiences are low if it comes to TS.
Also you should create a GPO for the terminal server so you can strip the rights of users. thats optional but recommended!

Assuming you have rebooted the unit, you can try a PPP connection to the serial port and try an RDP connection using serial connecting to the unit's name (default is dellservicetag. If that doesn't work either, you can see if the webpage pulls up and on there in the Maintenance tab there's a terminal services tab. Hello,

Please let me know the error message when the issue occurs. Besides, check the Event Viewer in the following sections:

Client side: Windows Logs System and Application.
If there is no related information on the client side, please check the Session Broker via enabling Session Broker Logging:

    1. On the RD Session Broker, open Regedit.exe
    2. Navigate to the key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tssdis\Parameters\
    3. Add a DWORD value TraceOutputMode, and set it to 3 in the value field.

After that, reproduce the issue a few times and find the log file at:

    %windir%\system32\tssdis.log

And then send the log file to us. For your convenience, I have created a workspace for you. You can upload the information files to the following link. (Please choose Send Files to Microsoft)

DB:2.36:Multiple Login Prompts On Ts Farm 3p

    Hi all,
we have a problem with a Windows Server 2008 R2 terminal server farm. The farm consists of a RD connection broker and multiple RD session hosts. Connections to the farm are load-balanced via DNS round robin. RDP Client version 7 is being used.
When users connect to the farm, they often are presented with multiple login prompts. We think this may be due to the user being redirected to another RD session host.
Is there a way to configure the farm or the client so that only one login prompt will be displayed? Is this possibly a bug in the RDP client?
    Thanks for you help,
    Sebastian

DB:2.36:Multiple Login Prompts On Ts Farm 3p

    Hi Sebastian,
From what I can gather from your description you're using server side authentication. Using this method against a Connection broker that is configured with multiple Session Host servers will produce the issue you're seeing.
From how I understand it a clients request for service is sent to a Session Host (initially determined by your RRDNS), this server then authenticates you and passes your request to the Connection Broker. The Connection Broker then sends your request to the
least busy Session Host in your farm. If this is the same Session Host used for the initial connection you'llreceive no further login request otherwise you'll receive another request for credentials.
If you're going to use just Session Hosts then I believe you can simply disable Connection Broker Load Balancing. You do this on your Session Host servers in the samedialogueyou use to specify the farm membership. You simply uncheck Participate
    in Connection Broker Load Balancing
If this fails or you're going to configure VDI then you're probably best configuring client side authentication (NLA).
I would highly recommend you purchase the Windows Server 2008r2 Remote Desktop Services Resource Kit. The authors of this book have done a fantastic job ofdisseminatingall the relevant information.
    Hope this helps.

    Hello,
Is it possible to redirect specific users to a specific server in a server farm? We have 4 terminal servers and one one these servers has specific software installed that a couple of users need. Now, they cannot specify what terver they connect to as it
is dictacted by connection broker. I know you can use a gateway and policies on that gateway to specify users who connect remotely. But these are local users on the LAN.
We have 2008 RD TS servers, with the connection broker, gateway servers being 2008 R2 as well.

DB:2.36:Redirect Specific Users To Specific Rd Pool Servers 8z

    Hi,
All servers that are a member of the same RD Farm name are expected to have the
exact same applications installed on them. You cannot control which specific server in a RD Farm a user is directed to (unless you write your own RDCB load-balancing plugin).
If you need to have a server with a different application on it then it needs to
not be a member of a RD Farm andpublished as a separate source via RD Connection Broker or as an additionalsource in RD Web, depending on how you have things configured. As an alternative you
could have a separate RD Farm name made up of multiple servers that have different apps installed.
You can use the RemoteApp user assignment feature to control which users will see the icon in RDWeb for the different application.

We want one type of user to always connect on one specific terminal server
Could somebody explain how to do this ?

DB:2.36:Question About Ts Session Broker, Specific Users za

    1. User's computer ask DNS to resolve the TS farm name and there is round robin mechanism that assign one of TS to the user. This is more or less autonomous mechanism that the client could not influence.
    2. User will connect to its existing session. If the session persists then the user will be assigned to this session again.
    3. By assigning a relative weight value you can influence the distribution of RDP access in favour of more powerfull server, but this does not prevent the special user to connect to another TS when the pool of more powerfull server is full.
    4. Perhaps, but not tested there is a possibility to deny the user in RDP group, but I do not know, what the session broker will do in this situation.

On each of the two terminal serversI have setup an identical remote app. if i create an RDP file from the remote app oneach`terminal serverI can connect using the rdp file and the applications opens as expected(a window on my
    desktop)
However whenI join them to a farm and use connection broker connecting to the farm name ittakes me onto to one of the two terminal servers desktop instead of opening the application.
AsI understand it the farm name should be listed in remote app sources on the connection broker and this should use the remote apps listed on the termial servers, which it is but no joy.
AmI missing something or is this not the way it works?
PS The servers are listed in the session broker and TS web access groups on the Conection Broker server.

We are looking to add a Windows 2008 R2 RDS Farm to an existing domain which already has a Windows 2003 R2 Terminal Server farm. Due to softwarelimitations we will need to keep the TS 2003 in place but plan to also add a RDS 2008 farm utilizing 2 different licensing servers. I have 2 questions regarding this configuration:First, can we have both a RDS 2008 Farm and TS 2003 Farm in the same domain?Second, can we have 2 separate license servers 1 for RDS 2008 and 1 for TS 2003? Or do I need to combine them?
I assume that we could have 2 different license servers, utilize the current TS 2003 CALs for the TS 2003 Farm and purchase new RDS 2008 CALs for the RDS 2008 Farm.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you can have them both in the same domain. Yes you can have 2 separate license servers. Just remember to hard code using group policy or in TS Config the proper license servers.

DB:2.35:Terminal Services Session Load Balancing Not Equal 83

    Hi,
A few days ago, I noticed our Terminal server session load balancing is not equally load balancing sessions. For example, I have 6 Terminal servers and there are 14,14,9,20,19,21 sessions on each server respectively. If I connect, Server 3 (which
is the one with the lowest amount of sessions) was the server I connected to through DNS. The session load balancer then assigned me to server 2.
For the last few days it's been about it's been about 33% more sessions on server 4,5,6. Here is what I have done so far:
Checked DNS: The DNS name for the farm has server 1,2,3
Active Directory: all 6 servers are in the session directory and terminal server computers groups. Terminal server settings are managed in GP and all servers are in the correct OU.
Reg settings: I checked the UserSessionLimit key and all were set to default 0. All the servers were set to the default value 100 for load balancing weight.
Can anyone help troubleshoot this? now that i type up what is wrong, it occurs to me that maybe on of the servers is malfunctioning and that may explain fot the 33% increase in sessions on server 4,5,6.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

DB:2.35:Terminal Services Session Load Balancing Not Equal 83

    Hi,

This scenario may be normal.Because session broker will not only consider the load balancing, but also consider the disconnected session within the FARM.If there will be alreadya few disconnected sessions on one TS, then all the connections will be redirected
to that TS.It may be the root cause of why your session numbers are not equal.

    Issue
When Windows 7 clients try to rdp into the farm either thru the gateway or locally (and we have bypass rd gateway for local... set), they are prompted with a Security Cert warning for the Session Broker server. Once accepted they are prompted
for another Security Cert warning for the Terminal Server (RD Server) they are attached to for that session. They get the SSL cert for the RDGateway.
They can check the box to don't ask me again... but each time the connect to a different Terminal server (having 3 in the environment today - adding more soon as more users access the this), means having them check this box at other times.
Everything I've been reading about the RD Gateway says that we only need an SSL Cert for the RD Gateway and we should not need one for the SB or RD Hosts. If that is the case, then why are we prompted for the security certs.
Do we need certs for all servers in the RD environment?

DB:2.34:Rdp Into 2008 Servers Asking For Certificate as

    Hi,

You will need several different kinds of certificates.

    1. RDS Gateway Certificate
It needs external DNS name which can be resolved publicly. For more information:

Configure a Certificate for the Remote Desktop Gateway Server
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732329.aspx

    2. RDS Session Host Server Authentication certificate
Its name does not need to be external accessible if all remote desktop access from external clients go though TS Gateway. The subject name in certificate should be
the same as the name used in client connection. (The Certificate created should be the name of the farm being used and SAN Subject Alternate Name should contain FQDN and NetBIOS name of RD Gateway, Connection Broker.)

In Windows Server 2008 R2, it also has an option to create a Kerberos identity for the farm for providing server authentication on intranet scenarios. For extranet,
    the customer should use certificate.

As you can read in the title our problem is that when you open an rdp session via mstsc /console to our dns farm called farm the servers hang and have to be rebooted.
My guess is that it has something to do with the NLB. The dns name farm points to the cluster ip so whenyou try to open a console session to the farm it doesn't know which server to use in the cluster and therefore it hangs.

    1. When you need to make an administative connexction to one of your servers you should use the /admin command line switch unless you have an old version of the Remote Desktop Client. If you are connecting to a Server 2003 TS /admin is equivalent to
    /console.
    2. When making an administrative connection you should be using the server's specific dedicated ip address.
    3. If you try mstsc /admin to a server's dedicated ip address does it connect okay or do the servers hang?

DB:2.34:Windows Terminal Server Session Directory 33

Anybody know when Session Directory will be supported?

We have a TS farm that uses session directory. Our Sun Rays with uttsc work fine and will redirect the users to their active session.

No such luck with SGD pointed at the farm. The user will open a new session and not get redirected to their existing session.

As one can imagine, this causes all sorts of problems when users leave their desks and then go home and can no longer access their existing session on the terminal server.

DB:2.34:Windows Terminal Server Session Directory 33

Currently SGD does not support the Terminal Server Session Directory. It is however on the roadmap of SGD, but I don't know if it will be in the next release yet.

DB:2.34:Terminal Services Gateway - Is This Needed To Publish A Ts Farm Via Uag? dj

I'm publishing a Terminal Services 2008 farm of four servers using the UAG TS Client Tunneling wizard. Previously, the farm was published using Terminal Services Gateway, so I removed the TS Gateway role, removed the references to the Gateway from the TS farm members, and published via UAG.Trouble is, after logon to the Terminal Servers via UAG, they keep trying to access the TS Gateway service for some reason (and fail miserably!)So my question is: Do I need a Terminal Services Gateway in a UAG / TS Farm scenario?thanks....

DB:2.34:Terminal Services Gateway - Is This Needed To Publish A Ts Farm Via Uag? dj

Hi Peter,If you are using the tunneling mode, you have to remove the TSG settings from the RDP files. The clients think that they have TSG and try to contact it. You don't need TSG in this case. But, the recommended solution is to use theTSG that is built into UAG (now it is know as Remote Desktop Gateway - RDG). You can do it by using the RemoteApp and Remote Desktop templates on UAG. Currently, it has problems with Vista and XP but it is going to be solved soon. Thanks, Meir :-Meir Mendelovich, Sr. Program Manager, Microsoft Forefront - IAG/UAG Product Group

    Hi,
Can anyone help me figure out a way to boot a client directly into an RDP session. I will be connecting to a RD Session Host server farm to deliver entire desktop experience. I want it to appeartransparentto the user. The thin
clients I have are winxp embedded. I've configured an RDP file at startup but user's see the embedded desktop followed by a login for the Remote Desktop Connection. It's sloppy. I just want them to boot straight in and be presented a login

I was reading a reply by someone on this forum that says it's possible to configure your diskless PC to start
an RDP session directly to an RDS farm and get a terminal service desktop. Second option is to have your diskless PC connect by RDP to a VDI RDS farm and get a desktop from there.
    Thanks

I have problems trying to connect an older Telxon PTC 960 that works fine with Access Point (Aironet old type), but can´t connect to Access Point Cisco 350.

    The error is Network timeout.

The terminal connects OK to Lucent 802.11b compliant Acces Point.

    Any suggestions are welcomed.

First of all what radio do you have inthe PTC 960SL?

Likely a 4x00 since you connect to a Lucent 802.11b AP.

If it is so, I would have a look in the radio settings of the 350, at the preamble size. For these legacy radio's, the AP needs to support "LONG" preamble.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
Try to point Start Menu not to the root of the shared folder but to the folder under the shared. For example in
\\server\menus create a folder called Start (not shared folder) and in the redirection policy point Start Menu to the
\\server\menus\start. I still suspect the issue was caused by permission settings. Please refer to the following article to double check the permission settings for folder redirection.

DB:2.33:Rds Farm Server 2012 Single Sign On Configuration zs

    Hi
I cant make SSO with Kerberos Authentication work in my Server 2012 RDS Farm. Here is some background:
I have just created a Server 2012 RDS Farm (called APLRDFARM). It has 2 Session hosts in the farm(RD1 and RD2).

I have amended the relevant GPO's by following:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2007/04/19/how-to-enable-single-sign-on-for-my-terminal-server-connections.aspx?PageIndex=2
This is giving the users 'your credentials did not work' but if they input their password again in the UAC box it lets them connect.
The RDP files point to APLRDFARM and the load balancing on the connection broker picks the relvant session host.
There is not entry in AD (terminal server OU)for andAPLRDFARM but there is in DNS (this entry points to the static addresses of the session hosts). Should i create computer object in the Ternimal Services OU called APLRDFARM?
I have have configured 3 self signing certificates on the connection broker in the 'edit deployments' section. This is where my error may lie. Should i name/subject the SSO,Publishing and Remote App certificates with the name of the APLRDFARM
and should these published to each session host.
If this is not the case can someone please point me in the right direction.

    Kind regards

DB:2.33:Implications Of Denying Log On Through Terminal Service For Farm Service Account 1z

Hi guys, We are trying to tighten the security for our SharePoint farm (MOSS 2007 with 1 SQL Server and 1 SharePoint server) and one of the things we are considering is to add the farm service account to a few local policies on the SharePoint server - Deny log on through Terminal Services (to prevent people from using the service account to use Remote Desktop to connect to the server) - Deny log on locally (to prevent people from logging in locally using the service account) - Deny access to this computer from the network (to prevent accessing files on the SharePoint server using the farm service account from the network) I have done that on one of my Dev environments and I see the consequences of doing that are: - You can't log in as the farm service account to any of the web applications or site collections, even if the account is part of the administrators group for the farm and/or for the site collection. - You can't create a new SharePoint web application and have the farm service account as the application pool account. - You can create a new web application using a different domain account if you use an account that is part of the Farm Administrators group. Just to clarify, the account used for the application pool is not part of the farm administrators group. - User profile import still works fine - SharePoint search crawling still works fine I am wondering if anybody knows what services in SharePoint would be impacted by applying these policies to the SharePoint server? Also, does anybody know of any good references on how to configure a least privilege farm?  What rights are needed during regular SharePoint Operation and what elevated rights are needed during special events, such as the application of updates, creation of new web applications? The best I found so far is http://blogs.msdn.com/modonovan/archive/2005/06/14/428862.aspx Thank you.
