DB:3.48:Adding Virtual Disks To Existing Virtual Machines xx

    Hi All -

This morning I deployed a virtual machine from a template. Now, I want to add a 2nd virtual disk to this new virtual machine. When I add the disk, I select the option to "store with virtual machine."

The problem I'm having is that the disk file creates itself in the TEMPLATE's folder, NOT the new virtual machine's folder. AND, it names the vmdk file the same name as the original vmdk, so I can't move it to the right folder. As you all know I can't re-name it either.

    Has anyone ever seen this?

DB:3.48:Adding Virtual Disks To Existing Virtual Machines xx

No I haven't reported it - I've never experienced it first hand - I've only seen it.

It's a pretty crazy experimental feature!

    Dear All,

I was doing testing for deploying a virtual machine from a template, the template is created from a virtual machine which was having few files on desktop in 'administrator' profile. the same files which are on desktop are also in C:\ drive of original machine.

After I deployed a new virtual machine from template I found same files as original machine on desktop and C:\ drive but now I wanted to change SID of new machine so I ran sysprep from Windows system32 \ sysprep, but after the process completed I found on the new machine that files from desktop are gone while same files were still existing in C:\ and also applications were there so what does this mean ? sysprep clears desktop items ?

DB:3.48:Deploy Vm From Template Desktop Files Missing ms

If you put the files in the default user account, its hidden and found under C:\Users they should stay. The default user account is like the All users account back in XP. Anything on the Default users account's desktop will show up on ANY and ALL users profiles desktop.

    Give that a try

When i go to that same template and open summary tab and see storagelocation it shows the same datastore (name: xyz).

But the template files are not available in that datastore name: xyz.

    Please suggest.

Please open the template's properties and check the location for the virtual disk and/or use RVTools (http://www.robware.net/) to see whether this shows you the correct location for the template's files.

also what does golden image refer too, Is it possible to clone a template or a golden image

If it is possible than which methods should i use from VI SDK 4 to do the same.

It would be really helpful if some one can guide me in this case

DB:3.45:Difference Between Template And A Virtual Machine 33

1)Can we perform operations like power on , power off , etc on template?

No. This is a purpose of having templates, so no one will accidentally turn it on and change something. But you can always convert template to VM in a second and turn it on if you need.

I suppose you should check API documentation for anwers 2 and 3.

When I deploy from my Windows 2003 template in Virtual Center 2.5, the newly deployed machine lists the hard drive as the hard drive that was stored for the template. This makes the template no longer usable, at least until I move the drive back to the correct template directory. Any ideas?

No, I'm not selecting that. To update my original post, I just deployed a new machine from that template without custom settings and it appears fine. It turns out, I only have this problem when I use a sysprep customization file.

    Hello,

I had the same problem jflenniken had with customizing a virtual machine with the vmware sdk (see: http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=18543tstart=0).

This problem has been solved and I posted this question in there already, but I don't know if it is related so now a new topic.

After I deploy a virtual machine from template (or clone) and customize it with sysprep (1.1), it just disappears after the task reaches 100% in Virtual Center (using the sample script CloneCust.pl or own code). I get no error message and nothing. Customizing a virtual machine from Virtual Center is working.

    Hi,

i'm having a question related to the virtual adapter names.
From where the SCVMM GUI is getting the virtual network adapter names?
I'm asking this because in the SCVMM GUI i can see values like Network Adapter 1, Network Adapter 2, etc..., but
when I'm using the following powershell command I get the virtual machine name as the virtual machine adapter name

    add-pssnapin Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager

    $vNetAdapters = Get-VirtualNetworkAdapter -VM w2k3-from-template-rpop;

    $vNetAdapters.Name

DB:3.24:Where The Scvmm Gui Is Getting Virtual Machine Adapter Names? j9

I am looking at an installation that we have with SCVMM 2008 R2..
In the GUI - I look at the properties of a VM - I see Network Adapter 1 and below it I see the virtual hardware properties. This VM only has one vNIC.
And I get the vNIC object and I see the Properties and Network Adapter 1 is not in the list. I assume this is what you mean??
Thsi si just SCVMM trickling up a vNIC object and assigning it a name in the GUI. This name means nothing to the VM or the OS in the VM. I fI look at my Hyper-V manager there are just vNICs - and they have no names just GUIDs. They do have
    properties.
I think part of the problem that you are ahving is that SCVMM does not have these names in the cmdlets because Hyper-v does not have these names in WMI.
Also, in the SCVMM GUI I cannot modify or assign these names - they are simply arbitrary, to make the GUI easier to follow. If I have two vNIC I get Network Adapter 1 and Network Adapter 2 - I cannot choose their names. If I add a third it is
    shown as Network Adapter 3.
Can you help me (and others I hope) to understnad why you would like to use these names? There might be a way to handle what you desire that is more in line with the way SCVMM / Hyper-V is designed.Brian Ehlert (hopefully you have found this useful) http://ITProctology.blogspot.com

    All,

Im having some performance issues with existing x64 guests on a vSphere 4.0 update 2 host and wanted to know if anyone else had seen this issue.

As of last week my VMware environment consisted of multiple vSphere 4.0 hosts (build 175625) and a single vCenter 4.0 server.

Since then I have upgraded my vCenter server to update 2 (build 258672) and built a new VMware host using VMware 4.0 update 2. The new host server is a IBM x3850 with 8 CPUs with HT (3.2GHz), 32GBs of RAM and is attached to our new SAN.

I deployed a new virtual machine (W2K3 R2 x64) from an existing template to my new vSphere 4.0 update 2 host server and the new virtual machine is running very sluggish. I even gave the new virtual machine 2 vCPUs and 4GBs of RAM and it still runs like a pig and yes you have to upgrade the VMware tools.

I first noticed this issue last week when a vendor provided me with a preconfigured Sun Solaris x64 template and it ran very sluggish on my new vSphere 4.0 update 2 host.

As a comparison tests I have done the following:

1.) I deployed a new virtual machine (W2K3 R2 x64) from the same template to my existing vSphere 4.0 hosts - No performance issues with 1 vCPU and 1GB of RAM. I then migrated this virtual machine to the vSphere 4.0 update 2 host, upgraded the VMware Tools and it ran like crap.

2.) I deployed a new x86 virtual machine (W2K3 R2 x86) to the same vSphere 4.0 update 2 host - No performance issues with 1 vCPU and 1GB of RAM

I havent had much time to investigate this issue or contact support yet, but I did want to pass on to the group what Ive run into so far. My next trouble shooting step will to build a new virtual machine (W2K3 R2 x64) from scratch on the vSphere 4.0 update 2 host and see if it has the same issue or not

Ill post my findings when Im done.

Hi,I'm new to System Center.Currently I just installed System Center Virtual Machine Manager and created a Linux (Ubuntu) VM successfully with warning Virtual Machine Manager cannot locate the boot or system volume on virtual machine. The resulting virtual machine might not start or operate properly. I followed an instruction that suggested me to ignore this warning and Ubuntu started successfully. The problem comes when I tried to turn the VM into a template, it failed with exactly the same warning. Is there anything I need to do to use Linux (Ubuntu) on System Center?Thank you.Sufiah.

    DB:3.16:Create Linux Template k9

I just created a new Template using an existing VHD stored in the library (the small blank virtual disk).gave it a nameIn the hardware profile I modify the DVD drive and select the ISO that is stored in my library. (do NOT select the Share image file checkbox)On the Guest Operating System profile I select the drop down and select Customization not requiredThen create my templateI then turn around and apply permissions to my template. Now I have the time it takes for the VHD and ISO to copy to a host and the user has to install the OS.I just did this with the Ubuntu ISO and it worked fine. The key is that I have to copy the ISO to the SCVMM Library and refresh the library to discover it.And be sure that the BIOS boot order has CD listed first in the hardware profile.I do get the error on the Install VM Components step - and guess what - that is not a failure. But because the process is Completed w/info  then this isn't a failure, but a different problem.  (don't ask me why it always thinks it needs to install the VM tools - I would call that a bug)If I select the host I can see the VM and I can boot it.I see that my ISO is attached.and I get the Ubuntu installer when I connect to the console of the VM (yes it does take a while to come up - be patient)Brian Ehlert

From a Microsoft Licensing perspective, you must license both systems. Activation creates a hash using different hardware identifiers. When you clone a machine, some of the components of the hash change. That is why you are bing asked to activate.

To continue continuum's answer, you should sysprep the system after making a copy and also ensure your MAC addresses are different in the VM config. Using his process, they should be different...but just make sure so you don't get any weird connectivity issues.

However I would recomend what other poster suggested is to make a new VM and use the VMDK (Disk) from the current. You can open the .VMTX file in Wordpad to review or modify the configuration of VM. There might also be a file .VMFX which has extened configuration for VM.

Here is how the internal .VMX or .VMTX looks like

Create completed successfully but when I try to power it on, I get an error message - "failed:Exception: no server selected to run vm(/OVS/running_pool_50_lnxrac2') memory=1024".
However, it does work if I power-off the first virtual machine and then start it.

    Can anybody please help?

    Thanks,
    Puneet

DB:3.05:Unable To Start Two Virtual Machines On Vm Server 79

Server RAM was indeed the issue. I bumped up the server memory by a couple of gigs and both VMs came up fine. One other thing that I did was to change the default VNC port from 0 to 1 i.e. from 5900 to 5901 on the second VM.

    Thanks all for the replies.

I am trying to convert a template to a virtual machine with the "Customize using Customization wizard" and when i click on next after selecting this option i get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". The virtual machine or now the template is running windows 2003 Enterprise edition with one processor, 1024MB memory, one NIC and no CD drive attached. I have tried to convert the template back to a VM and then back to a template, but I get the same error. I built another VM and converted it to a template and tried the deploy VM from template and i get the same error message. I am running ESX 3 with VC as a VM on the ESX server - does that have anything to do with it?

I attended a webinar today for VC2.0. The presenter said something like "you can change the template byte and flip it from template into a VM. You can then flip it back into a template". (not an exact quote). This is because a template is now a type of virtual machine and not its own object.

Can multiple users flip the same template into multiple VMs at the same time?

    Hello,

You could migrate VM template to the required node with keeping it on the source one:

    Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,password).
    Migrate the VM template-ubuntu1204LTS-x86_64 on dest.domain.com ()
    root@dest.domain.coms password:

Hi, I'm having some problems creating templates from virtual machines with snapshots. Virtual machines use thin provisioning, but when I take a snapshot the virtual disk is marked as thick (it seems to be a known bug http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_UScmd=displayKCexternalId=1020137), although it actually uses thin provisioning. So, when I clone the virtual machine and mark it as template, this new template is configured as thick provisioning.

I've not been able to force the new template to be created as thin provisioning via the Perl SDK. Does anyone know how could I force the template to use thin provisioning??

Cannot run Sysprep on virtual machine because the template does not have a virtual hard disk attached that has been generalized.

    Recommended Action
Specify a template that has been generalized and then try the operation again.

Can you explain in detail what you have been doing?
the normal process of creating a template with VMM is to first create an empty VM, install the required bits for your environment, patch it and power it off. Then in VMM, right click, create VM template. This will syspred the VHD and put the template (with
its associated disks) into the library.

The OS was Syspreped with the correct Deploy.cab.When I create the template off the VHD (which is located in the VMM server library) and create a VM off that template , it fails at 94 %. Ironically if I go to the host where the new VM was created and Open Hyper-V manager then the VM seems to be fine. All sysprep information such as built in Administrator Password seem to work fine. The error I get is the following:

    Recommended Action

Verify the status of the virtual machine by connecting to it using Virtual Machine Remote Client (VMRC), and then try the operation againThe Status says : Costumization FailedAgain, if I go to Hyper-V Manager the VM seems fine. Any idea why this is happening ? We need to set up database server as virtual machine, other company send us .img file for the database and weblogic server. Now is there a difference in importing virtual machine and importing virtual machine template? Because the file structure is the same, there will be *.img file and *.cfg file in both cases. Hello

I've created a virtual machine with Windows 2008 Server as Os on it. I'm using its VHD to act as template (by creating copies) for my new Windows 2008 virtual machines. I'm doing it using ESXi 5.0 Vim API in my application.

The problem I'm facing is that if I select LSA Logic Parallel as SCSI Controller type while creating the template virtual machine, then all virtual machines created using the template Virtual Machine VHD necessarily have to use LSA Logic Parallel as SCSI Controller type, otherwise the virtual machine created will give a blue screen at boot time and reboot. Same is the case if template VHD has LSA SAS type SCSI controller and the Virtual machine created on LSA Logic Parallel, the newly created VM will not boot.

Since I'm doing it all programmatically and not using VSphere client, so the solution I can think of is to somehow detect the type of SCSI controller added on template VHD (that I'm copying to create virtual machines) and use same type of SCSI Constroller while creating new virtual machine.

Is there any method in Vim API to check the scsi controller type on a VHD file. Please note that I may not have the template virtual machine, instead only its hard disk.

DB:2.99:Convert To Template Or Not, That Is The Question xz

So over the years I've been using Templates in "template form" and I've found no advantage to having the VM in "template format" rather than just leaving a VM not converted. In fact, I've found disadvantages to converting the VM into a template (VMware template format) such as the following:

If host has Templates registered and was removed from vCenter and added back you lose all the registered templates and forced to manually comb through datastores to find the templates and "Add to Inventory". Conversely if the VM's were never converted to template format, when you add the host back to vCenter all the VM's would automatically be registered within vCenter.

Our templates are extremely important to our work process and thus I store a clone of each template onto two separate storage devices for redundancy. i.e.

    Template1 stored on StorageDevice1\LUN0

    Template1 stored on StorageDevice2\LUN0

I've found that DRS controls and changes at will what HOST Template1 is registered too. For increased availability I create DRS rules that specifically separates Template1 from ever registering to the same HOST however you can not create DRS rules for Template1 if Template1 is in a "template format". Template1 must be in "Virtual Machine format" to create the DRS rule.

So with these two glaring disadvantages I'm scratching my head trying to come up with any advantage to having Template1 live in my vCenter as a VMware template. Am I missing anything here??? ?:|

    Our environment:

6 HOST's running vSphere and vCenter Server 4.0

DB:2.99:Convert To Template Or Not, That Is The Question xz

AndreTheGiant VMmatty thanks for the replies. All valid point you make.

We use a prefix for all our VM's including the Templates that very easily organizes the view and we control access (power on) to the Templates via the VMware Roles. In 3.5 absolutely it was an advantage to use compacted Templates however as you know 4.0 changes all that. We're not using any backup solution at the moment as most of our VM's are for short term testing. However that is certainly something to keep in mind. I just wonder if the short backup time is due to just the format or has more to do with whether it is thin provisioned.

    Thanks for the input!

There is an solution. You can go throught the Database and set in the Table dbo.VPX_VM the Value IS_TEMPLATE for the corrupted Template from 1 to 0. After that you need to restart your VirtualCenter. In the Logs of the VC you would see somewhere between the lines, that the VC check the VMs and say, that this one is not an valid VM and unregister it. So it is removed from the invetory. If you wish to delete it from the Disk, feel free...

There are so many reasons this can happen that its impossible to tell with the information you've provided.

I have idea that there is no path to IP address you set on the first node of your RAC. The RAC templates can be a little difficult to understand. Especially if you don't understand how RAC works.

What IP address did you set for the private and public addresses for the RAC? What is the IP address of the VM Manager. IF you used DHCP... then do you have a DHCP server to service the request?

    Hi.

We're having a problem with deploying new virtual machines from a Windows 2003 template we have. The template is functioning perfectly fine and expected. However when we deploy a new virtual machine from this template, the balloon driver in the new virtual machine inflates even though there is no contention and plenty of available RAM in the ESXi server. The amount of memory the balloon driver consumes eventually returns to zero, but users are complaining about poor performance of the virtual machine.

The USB drive would disconnect from the host machine and would appear within my virtual machine. I expected the same to happen with the asata drive but it's not happening. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I'm missing?

DB:2.94:Cannot Connect Esata External Drive To Virtual Machine m9

Thanks for your reply. I've done that and it does work. What I'm really after though is to point my IIS root directory to an external disk drive so that I can run my web server with data completely outside my virtual environment. I was able to do this with my previous USB approach to an external hard disk. The problem I'm running into is that the final ok button is greyed out when I point the IIS root to a mapped drive - I cannot complete the process, although the system sees the files. It's as if the external hard disk has to be completely and soley dedicated to the virtual environment. This is also the case with SQL server.

Someone said that this might be a permissions issue. I played around with permissions but I'm not sure at what level I should be looking at.

We recently redid the server that we have GSX and Virtual Center installed on. Previously I was able to clone machines and deploy from templates with no problem. Now, I get an error whenever I try to clone a virtual machine. I can create templates with no problem, but if I try to deploy a new virtual machine from a template I get the same error.

The error message is: "Failed to customize guest OS while finding system partition: No partitions found on virtual disk."

I've tried this with virtual machines created in Virtual Center and through the GSX Console, and I always get the same error.

Is there something missing in my setup? Or could I have somehow started creating virtual machines incorrectly? Any pointers would be much appreciated...

when i migrate a virtual machine from local storage to iSCSI storage, i get a strange error message when migration is at 100% ? The same error i get when i deploy a new template (located at local storage) to an iSCSI datastore. manual copy from the console works fine ? anybody an idea or hint how to fix this problem ? DB:2.92:Unable To Install Virtual Guest Services After V2v k7

I'm migrating the following virtual guest:

    Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2 32-bit

    From the following virtual host:

    Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise SP2 64-bit
    Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP2

    To the following virtual host:

    Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 64-bit
    Microsoft Hyper-V R2
Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2

The procedure I used is as follows:
Uninstall VM Additions from Guest VM
Change NIC IP configuration from static to dynamic
    Reboot
    Shutdown Guest VM
    Backup Guest VM
    Start up Guest VM
From within SCVMM2008 R2 right click on Guest VM and choose 'Migrate'
Migrate Guest VM from VS2005R2 to Hyper-V R2
    Start migrated Guest VM
Verify Virtual Guest Services are installed
Shutdown and tweak VM hardware if needed
Reconfigure NIC from dynamic to static
Run Windows Updates on Guest VM
Verify connectivity and service status on Guest VM
So far this procedure has worked with one other VM (which worked) and I'm performing the procedure under a Enterprise Domain Admin account. This time around I got a few warnings. Warning (1225) The DVD drive associated with the virtual machine Guest VM does not exist on host Hyper-V Host. Warning (1237) The Virtual Network VS2005R2 Server Shared Network associated with the virtual machine Guest VM does not exist on host Hyper-V Host. Warning (1243) The RunAs credentials cannot be applied for virtual machine Guest VM on server Hyper-V Host. Change the RunAs Credentials from the Virtual Server Actions tab in the virtual machine properties page. Warning (13206) Virtual Machine Manager cannot locate the boot or system volume on virtual machine Guest VM. The resulting virtual machine might not start or operate properly. The first two don't matter at all. The third one I also don't care about since it's likely caused by us having the Virtual Guest on the VS2005R2 host configured to run under a account. The message that is causing me problems is the forth. From the research I've done I haven't been able to find anyone else running into this problem due to a V2V conversion involving VS2005R2. I've seen it be a problem with new template based VM's and a converstion from VMware to Hyper-V. Despite what that error message says the VM boots and runs just fine (minus virtual guest services). When I try to install the virtual guest services after the migration that warning now turns into an error and the virtual guest services fail to install. See below: Error (13206) Virtual Machine Manager cannot locate the boot or system volume on virtual machine Guest VM. The resulting virtual machine might not start or operate properly. A temporary work around was to boot up the VM and use the default Hyper-V MMC to connect into the Guest VM, insert the virtual guest services disc and have the autorun kick in and install the tools (after upgrading the HAL in the Guest VM). If I go back into SCVMM and try to re-install those tools I get the same warning 13206. Anyone have any idea why this is happening or how to fix it so I can use SCVMM for what it's for? The only thing I forgot to do for this migration was upgrade the VS2005R2 virtual services to the latest version (13.813) before doing the migration. Is that the cause of my headache? If so why does it still cause problems after those tools were successfully removed and the new Hyper-V guest services installed?

DB:2.92:Unable To Install Virtual Guest Services After V2v k7

    Hey Mike,
I followed the process I outlined above and the rest of our migrations went smoothly.

Also, is it possible to configure a computer name (virtual machine name) and ip-address during deployment of those VM's? (The Sysprep template for all VM's is the same)

    1. Can you elaborate on the two scenarios you have mentioned

    " base - snap A - snap B - snapC ...

    - then no

if you have snapshots in a tree like

    base - snap A - snap A1 - snap A2 ....

    snapB - snapB1 - snapB2 ...

then you can do it "

    2. Here in our testing environment, the testers are not associated to a single virtual machine. The create snapshots on different virtual machines. However, if two tester need a single virtual machine for accessing their individual snapshots, it is a problem.

I think I understood what creating a hardware and guest OS profile are ( to be used when creating a new virtual machine so that you do not configure each machine but select from the drop down to apply the same settings for all machines) correct me if I am wrong.
However what is Create a new template ? Does it do the same as creating a general standard settings for the hardware and guest OS profile or does it go further than that ? And how can a template be created from a vhd
    Thank you

    DB:2.88:What Is A Template In Scvmm 2008 R2 ff

As laiys mentioned a template ties the other components into one unit to build a VM. Additionally templates are what can be delegated for creation to self service users. So if you want self service users to be able to create a VM, then they will need templates exposed to them. The Guest OS Profile, Hardware Template, and VHDs are VM components that are used on the backend to speed up administrative tasks.

    Hi
I used one ofthe virtual machines (NNDCLN03)tocreate a template.
While creating the template I got error 802: the virtual hard disk file NNDCLN03is already in use by another VirtualHarddisk
I retried a view things but could not solve it.
When looking in the Virtual Machinespage, in the overview, itshowsthe status Sysprepping for this pecticularvirtual machine(NNDCLN03)
My idea was to forget about it andcreate the template later and deploy the orginal virtual machine from the store.Thiswas not possible.
I also tried to create a new virtual machine from the same vhd (copy). Not possible either
But now I get the error thatvirtual machine NNDCLN03 already exists on the host. I get the same response for all the hosts in the cluster.
However when I look in Failover Cluster Manager I do not see NNDCLN03. Neither do I see it in Hyper-V manager.
Question: how to get rid of the still Sysprepping Virtual Machine (NNDCLN03) in Virtual Machine Manager (2008R2).

To me that looks like solving the issues.

    Thanks for helping

    Hi all
Removed the sysprepping machine succesfully today with the help of Microsoft Support.
    ===
To remove missing VM's the abovementioned kbis fine.
However, to remove the Sysprepping machine we had to take one extra step.
    ===

To remove the sysprepping machine we first had to identify the GUID by running the following script on the database:
    USE [VirtualManagerDB]
    SELECT *FROM
    tbl_WLC_VObject
WHERE (Name = 'Name of that Sysprepping Machine')
    --

This actually will bring up one or more VMs.
We were lookingfor onewith an Object State of 100 or 103.
In our case we foundone with object state 103.
From that one we copied the GUID.
    ===
Next step was to copy the GUID into the followoing script, and then run that script on the Database

    USE [VirtualManagerDB]
    GO
    DECLARE @return_value int
    EXEC @return_value = [dbo].[prc_WLC_RemoveVMInstance]
    @VMInstanceId =
    'GUID'
    SELECT 'Return Value' = @return_value
    GO

    USE [VirtualManagerDB]
    GO
    DECLARE @return_value int
    EXEC @return_value = [dbo].[prc_WLC_RemoveVObject]
    @ObjectId =
    ' GUID '
    SELECT 'Return Value' = @return_value
    GO

    USE [VirtualManagerDB]
    GO
    DECLARE @return_value int
    EXEC @return_value = [dbo].[prc_WLC_RemoveHWProfile]
    @HWProfileId =
    ' GUID '
    SELECT 'Return Value' = @return_value
    GO

    =======
Start the Virtual Machine Manager and the Virtual Machine Manager AgentServices.
And then looking at the Virtual Machines in the Virtual Machine Manager,
    all wasfine again.

    ===
And of course I could deploy that VM to hosts on the cluster again
    ===

Easy to do, once you know how to do it

Here is what I'd like to do with PowerCLI,

    1. Select a group of templates from a folder

    2. Convert those templates to virtual machines, keeping the same name and the same cluster

When converting a template to a VM using vSphere client, it prompts you what cluster you want to put it on. I want powercli to assume that the cluster the template is currently located on is the same one the converted Virtual machine should go on, without prompting me.

DB:2.87:Virtual Machine Manager 2012 Error 646 - Slots Are Not Available On The Network Adapters Bus For The Addition Of New Devices. ca

    Hi,
I've set up a test environment at my place of work to evaluate the Microsoft Private Cloud, and am unable to create a virtual machine via a Service Manager Portal request, as the runbook completes successfully butthe job in VMM fails with the following
    error:

    Error (646)
Slots are not available on the network adapters bus for the addition of new devices.
    RecommendedAction:
The network bus cannot support the addition of newdevices.

    Here arefurther details:
I have three XenServer 6.0 hosts which I have added to a host group in VMM, and have installed the integration pack as required. I have installed the Cloud Services Process Pack runbooks in Orchestrator, and the Process Pack itself in Service Manager.
I have created some virtual machine templates from XenServer virtual machines, and have created a single-tier service template which uses this VM template for the only VM in the service.
The network adapter used in the VM templates and the service template is a legacy network adapter, connected to the onelogical networkthat I am using.

When I submit a virtual machine creation request in the VMM 2012 self service portal, the VM is created on one of my XenServer hosts without any issues.
When I 'Request a service' using the Service Manager 2012 self-service portal that I have installed as a SharePoint site, the request goes into Service Manager correctly, and when I complete the relevant manual actions in Service Manager for the request
it is able to create the service VMusing VMM without any issues.
However, when I 'Request a virtual machine' in the Service Manager self-service portal, the runbook 'Create Virtual Machine in SCVMM' is invoked correctly - I can see it running in Orchestrator - but the job in VMM called 'Create Virtual Machine in Cloud'
fails with the error above. In Service Manager, the runbook activity strangely comes up as having completed successfully, but the last activity in the request fails (this is called 'Post Virtual Machine Creation Activity'). I can see no details
in the activity itself as to what this actually does, but I would imagine it is irrelevant and the issue is directly to do with VMM trying to create the VM.

The fact that when a service is created using the same virtual machine template, it completes successfully, suggests to me that the settings that I have in place in the template are correct, and I can see that the relevant runbooks are being invoked and
are working correctly, so could this be something in VMM that I need to resolve? As XenServer creates VMs correctly via the service request or the VMM portal I assume that that is setup correctly too.

I would appreciate any help on this, as I have not been able to find any information on this error.
    Many Thanks
    Matt

UPDATE: I have had to rebuild the Virtual Machine Manager server and both Service Manager servers (management server and data warehouse) for one reason or another, but am still receiving the same error when trying to create a virtual machine using the relevant
request offering. Given that this issue is persistant following a complete rebuild, I would imagine that this issue is related to the Runbooks that are supplied with the Cloud Services Process Pack, as I can still create a VM from within the VMM console without
any problems. As a workaround I will therefore try creating my own runbook for VM requests, but would still appreciate it if anyone has any ideas as to how to resolve this error.

DB:2.87:Virtual Machine Manager 2012 Error 646 - Slots Are Not Available On The Network Adapters Bus For The Addition Of New Devices. ca

For anyone that is also getting this error and has found this thread - Microsoft are looking at this for me today, so I will post back with a resolution when I (hopefully) get one.

I also want them to have the right to 'Mark as Template' and "Convert to virtual machine' Which I have assigned to them in their role.

Yes. You have to give rights to a top level machine (as administrator) but don't propagate. Then give the rights to whatever object you want them to have access to, like a resource pool. The trick is that the rights have to be assigned for them to see the drives and have access, but they only do this from a top level, and the reason you don't want them to propagate, is because you don't want them to see everything in between, just the top object then the object (pool or VMs) you want for Virtual Machine user

    Hi All,

Well its a basic straight question I have, hope i get some answers from this forum

I have around 20 VMs to be built where all are SuSE 10 of the same configuration.

Can i create one Virtual machine, create a template out of this VM, and start creating the other 19 VMs using the newly created template.

    Is it like that?

Or can anybody give a clear "step by step procedure in virtual center" to create VMs using template. Since i will be assigning static IPs to all the VMs, how can I go about this issue.

The Help section in VC also tell that we need to clone the template to create a new VM-what exactly does this mean?

What is the difference between Clone Template?

    Thanks,

    Deepak.A

with clone you can create 1 virtual machine from 1 virtual machine.

With template you can create severals virtual machine from 1 template.

With customization specifications you can "sysprep" (please translate this word in unix world) a linux machine too... At least with Red Hat one.... (I've tested only this distro)

    Hi,

If however I enter "Maintaince mode" exit the VI client and then come back in I can make a template - the extra commands appear.

"Deploy Virtual Machine from this template".

    "Clone to new virtual machine"

    "Convert to template"

    "Convert to virtual machine".

So is this how it is meant to work - i would of thought shutting down the virtual machine is sufficent. Something I am missing here?

DB:2.86:Don't See The Template Options. 8m

Since creating a template is essentially a clone it doesn't make a lot of sense to clone the running VM, though it could be done via snapshots I guess. Usually you would want at non-changing, known image to create the template from and a running machine probably isn't the best source for it.

And yes, I was wondering if you were connected to the VirtualCenter server with the VI Client since you wouldn't expect to see those options while connected to the ESX server.

DB:2.85:2 Permanent Ppp Multilinks: Virtual-Template + Interf. Multilink: Is It Ok? mk

I've been using for years a Virtual-Template to activate a permanent ppp multilink bundle between 2 sites (virtual access interface is dynamically created at router boot and stays active forever).

Once defined the "multilink Virtual-Template 1", it is just the matter of adding "ppp multilink" to a serial interface and the link automatically joins the bundle created by the template (that obviously too has "ppp multilink" definined).

Some time ago, having to define a another multilink to a different location from the same router, I found that the new command "Interface Multilink n" had the "multilink-group n" option that allowed me to assign the new serial lines to the "interface Multilink" connecting the new location, instead of letting them join automatically the Virtual-Template.

So now I have 2 ppp multilink bundles one created via a virtual-template and one via a interface multilink. Only recently I discovered that also the Virtual-Template has the "ppp multilink group" (was "multilink-group").... What is the practical and architectural difference between the 2 methods? I would like to use 2 Virtual templates (for homogeneity in the rest of the company) and delete the multilink interface. Is it a good idea?

Any problem or suggestion? Some IOS version incompatibility?

    Thanks in advance,

    Piero

DB:2.85:2 Permanent Ppp Multilinks: Virtual-Template + Interf. Multilink: Is It Ok? mk

    THINGS ARE NOT SO OK.......

I've discovered that the "ppp multilink group n" supported by a Virtual-Interface, still needs an interface Multilink n definition!!! So I did not define a second Virtual-Interface and I left the interface Multilink definition.

However the multilink defined via Virtual-Template, never had problems if 1 or even 2 serial went down (no loss of packets). On the contrary if one of the two serial lines goes down in the multilink defined by th Interface Multilink, I loose lots of packets (up to 40%) until the multilink gets settled after 50/60 sec.

I've defined a HSRP group with this router to overcome this traffic loss, preferring to use a single line on a different router but having a quicker convergence. However tracking the single serial of the multilink (and the multilink itself too) still gives me a 60 sec of delay in activating the standby router (HSRP usally takes just few seconds).

How is it possible that with the virtual-template things are perfect and with the multilink interface I have all theese problems?

Is there a way of optimizing the PPP multilink protocol in the multilink interface in order to avoid the 60 sec. freeze of the link if a serial goes down?

    Thanks for any info.

From your appserver, can you telnet to the virtual machine on port 4750?

    i.e. telnet server_name 4750

If that doesn't work, then there's either a route missing, or a firewall rule somewhere preventing traffic... You should verify that with your network admins if it's the case.

Also make sure that the target name as entered in BladeLogic is a hostname that the appserver can resolve. You can't enter something like "Virtual_Machine_1" if that is not an actual hostname your appserver can resolve...

Target names must be either valid hostnames, or ip addresses

Azure continues to charge for the VM core hours while it is Stopped, however, Azure doesn’t charge for the VM core hours while it is Stopped (Deallocated). I would suggest you have a look at

Only option you have is to use sparse files, which is a functionality of OCFS2 (which normally is your repository).

DB:2.85:Iis Issues After Deploying A Template js

    Hi all,

I built a Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machine from scratch and configured it with the base setups that I want all of my Server 2008 R2 virtual machines to have. I tested everything and it works fine. I have installed and configured IIS, set up virtual directories and that is all working as well. I powered the machine off and exported it to an OVF template. I then deployed that template, configured it using the vCenter Converter Standalone tool and powered on the machine, left it sysprep, and when it's all done, IIS doesn't work.

Here's my configuration. We have 3 VM hosts, each running different versions of ESXI. The 3 versions we are using are:
    4.0.0-2081674.1.0-2602474.1.0-502767

The versions of vCenter Converter Standalone that I've tried using for configuring the machine I deployed using the template include:
    4.3.0-2922385.0.0-470252

The VM that I refer to that I built and exported to a template was built on the VM host version 4.0.0-208167. I have tried deploying that template to all 3 VM hosts with them all having the same issues.

And here's the issue I'm having. When I first try accessing the server's default web site (or any virtual directory created within the default web site for that matter), I get a 503 error. I look in the event viewer and there is an event log with this info:
Log: ApplicationSource: IIS-W3SVC-WPEventID: 2307Level: ErrorMessage: The worker process for application pool 'DefaultAppPool' encountered an error 'Failed to decrypt attribute 'password' ' trying to read configuration data from file '\\?\C:\inetpub\temp\apppools\DefaultAppPool\DefaultAppPool.config', line number '179'. The data field contains the error code.

After searching online, I found an article that indicated to go into the file C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config, find the configProtectedData node and remove the providers section, and then do an iisreset. I did this and when I browsed to the default web site, all was well and I thought I was good to go.

But not quite. Next thing I needed to do was update some of the virtual directories that were previously configured on the base template to point to a network share that was specific to each server I deploy and configure from the template. That virtual directory is set up to Connect As a domain account. If I try to update the network share from within the IIS management console, when I try to close the window I get an error 'Value does not fall within the expected range'.

So I searched online for this problem. I found an article (http://forums.iis.net/p/1160389/1915020.aspx#1915020) that indicated to run the following command to resolve this problem:

    iissetup.exe /install SharedLibraries

It even indicates that you will get an error, but that it still resolves the problem. So I gave it a shot and it did indeed resolve the problem. And you would think this would be good news. However, the first problem is now back.

I've used PsGetsid to make sure that the machine I deployed using the template has a different SID than the template had and they do indeed have different SIDs.

So at this point, I'm not sure what else to look at or try. I've been looking at google, these forums, MSDN, stackoverflow, etc. for days to no avail. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Eric

DB:2.85:Iis Issues After Deploying A Template js

In my experience, this came about because the deployed machine was 'customized' by VMWare. The sysprep had caused the new machine to have a new SID. I ran into further issues with certificates as well:

Annoyingly enough, this came across on the second deploy of a machine, as the first had failed to customize and ended with the same SID.

If I start a deployment, I can see VMM uses the Fast Copy method to transfer the VHDX from our library to the cluster storage, but only does it at about 150MB/s

    Hi,
if VMM initiates the copy, it is encrypted via BITS. If you copy the file it's unsecure. This is the only difference. This can be the reason of the difference. Check for options tuning up BITS.

Adding the following parameter to the .vmx configuration file will avoid the message box and act as if the user clicked "I copied it".

    uuid.action = "create"

    thought they are same function.

why do they have two type of provisioning of VM?

or By cloning the vm, u cant edit the configuration setting , only vm template allow to do that?

A clone is a copy of a virtual machine. A template is a master copy of a virtual machine that can be used to create many clones.

If you need to create a copy of the VM you can use cloning. The same settings of the master VM will be available in the cloned VM. You can create, configure, and install software on a single virtual machine, and then clone it multiple times, rather than creating and configuring each virtual machine individually.

A template is a master copy of a virtual machine that can be used to create and provision virtual machines. Templates cannot be powered on or edited.

The template acts like a blueprint of the VM.

DB:2.84:How Does Ovs Handle Sparse Files? xm

I can see that if I create a new virtual machine a spare disk image file is created - fine. But I'm having problem with other type of operations. If I have a sparse System.img in some Virtual machine and I create a template of it - then the System.img copied to the template catalog is not sparse anymore- I guess this holds true also if you clone a virtual machine. Does anyone know if OVS support handling of sparse files when moving/copying the files arround? Or maybe know if this feature is planned?
