DB:3.36:Moving Client From Host To Another Fails (The Selected Virtual Machine Is Not Recognized On This System) pj

I'm testing VMWare Server 2 (free) on Windows platform. Everything works fine, but I can't move the virtual machine from one host to another. I can't add it to inventory - it givers error: The cause of this problem may be that the virtual machine's .vmx file is corrupted, or that the virtual machine version is newer than is recognized by the host. You can remove the virtual machine from the inventory if you believe that it is not recoverable

    I've tried 2 different scennarios:

    1. I've copied \Virtual Machines\*.* (all files and folders) from Host A to Host B.

    2. I've first imported datasource from Host A to Host B (shared Virtual Machines - folder of Host A) and tried to import machine from inventory.

Errror is the same. Host A is Windows Vista, Host B is Windows XP. Client is Win2003.

DB:3.36:Moving Client From Host To Another Fails (The Selected Virtual Machine Is Not Recognized On This System) pj

Hah, yesterday I moved one virtual Windows server from one host to another in offline suspend mode. It didn't start, because there was second disc mapped from another VM which was deleted at the same time. And because server was in suspended mode, extra disk could not be removed. After some panic, I opened that main configuration file and choosed second disk value TRUE to FALSE, and the system is now up and running. Damn I was happy to solve it

DB:3.00:Moving A Domain From One Client To Another Client 38

Is it possiblt to move a Domain from ClientA to ClientB easily? If so, Im missing it.

DB:3.00:Moving A Domain From One Client To Another Client 38

    Move domain not working

    SITUATION
Were using Plesk 7.5.4 on a Windows machine. The option move to antoher client is not yet present in our Plesk environment (Plesk 7.6 does).

    QUESTION
Were trying to move domains from one client to another. Therefore we use the command line utility as earlier suggested. But, every client is using another set of IP adresses. So the IP addresses used in the domain DNS config also needs to be updated. This is where the problem rises. Moving the domain to another client is working, but the ipaddress is not updated.

    INFORMATION
As suggested in an earlier post and in the KB article of SWSoft (ID# 991) we use a specific command line rule to move a domain, including the ipaddress option. See the code below

%plesk_bin%\domain.exe -u [domain without www] -clogin [name of new client] -ip [new ipaddress]

    During the execution of this line it returns an error. It is an HTML error with a lot of non-info. One line is usefull in specific;

PHostingManager() constructor failed: Unable to set current ip address: IP address is missing.

The domain has been moved to the new client, but the ipaddresses in the DNS of this domain is not updated. The ipaddress is in use on the server by the new client, so thats not the problem. A domain in Plesk with nothing setup (no hosting, no forwarding etc.) is moved without eny erros, even the ipaddresses are updated. But when a domein has hosting set up (like mysql db, emailaddresses etc.) it moves, but the ipaddresses of the DNS config of that domain is not updated.

    THE ANSWER I WOULD LIKE
We can upgrade from Plesk 7.5.4 to 7.6.*, so the options becomes available in Plesk, but wed rather not update (because of al the update issues).

Maybe we can change it directly in the MySQL database? If so, what are the changes to be made?

Or is there a setting in Plesk that we need to change before running the command line code?

    Other suggestions?

    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

On the T43 I use the Cisco VPN client which interfaces with my RSA Soft-token during the authentication process. The Cisco VPN connects to my work's VPN concentrator it negotiates fine and then requests my RSA PIN code which I provide and I am authenticated provided a connection. No problem.

On the T61p, I follow the same T43 connection process but it fails the user authentication process every time. I've tried everything from moving the working T43 guest to the T61p (it still fails authentication) to rebuilding the T61p guest OS and only installing the above software (and importing my 'token'); it still fails the user authentication phase.

When I view the Cisco VPN logs I can see it successfully negotiating with the VPN concentrator, but when it comes to the user authentication part, after I input my RSA creds it immediately fails with the 'user authentication failure' error.

    Hi,

I am little bit confused here., what is the diff between HA FT?

    From my understanding:

HA - VMware HA allows the VM's running on ESX hosts to automatically recover from host failures. If HA is enabled, if the host fails., all the vm's associated with it will restart on the next available host.

FT - When one VM fails, it migrates to another ESX host without any downtime and creates one copy in another ESX host.

Will FT work if we have only 2 hosts in a cluster. Can we enable FT and HA both at a time? What is the exact difference?

    Thanks,

    DB:2.74:Ft Ha dk

    Prashant wrote:

If we enable FT for a VM12 on Host1 and also enable HA on Host1.

FT needs HA configured for the whole cluster. HA will protect all VMs by trying to restart them after a host failure and FT could give selected VMs a higher degree of protection.

    Disconnect host from cluster

    Add host to new cluster

Keep in mind that if you have resource pools setup that these will be copied as well, but they will be added on host level and you will still manually need to move these.

From Chapter 2 of TCP/IP Fundamentals for Microsoft Windows (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb726993.aspx): ICMP, defined in RFC 792, reports and helps troubleshoot errors for packets that are undeliverable. For example, if IPv4 cannot deliver a packet to the destination host, ICMP on the router or the destination host sends a Destination Unreachable message to the sending host.ICMP reports errors for IP delivery (Network layer), not for TCP connection establishment (Transport layer).

You are correct that VMotion is the "live" migration of a running VM from one ESX host to another.

Configuring "Automated" VMotioning of VMs for the purposes of load balancing entails implementing a cluster of ESX hosts and enabling the cluster for DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduling). However, DRS does not[/i] require enabling HA.

HA (High Availability) does not entail VMotion, as HA deals with ESX host failure and the VMs will be powered-off (either due to ESX host failure or due to an ESX host becoming isolated from the cluster, and the VMs can be configured to be powered-off because if it remains powered-on the isolated ESX host will retain a lock on the vmdk). Since HA deals with VMs that are powered-off and then powered-on on a difference ESX host, by definition you are not dealing with VMotion since the VM does not remain running.

HA and DRS do compliment each other quite well, as when the VMs are powered-on, DRS can be configured to select the most-appropriate host (from a resource perspective) to run the VM and then also migrate other other running VMs across different ESX hosts in the cluster to optimize available resources.

From your posts, it sounds like you have already studied the Resource Management Guide. Here is another link that you might find useful:

Yes, to prevent modifying the VMs on each move they switches need common naming.

I've moved a domain file to another mac.
I've downloaded the complete website from the server where it resides (another host, not .mac) but when I try to open up the site in iWeb it always prompts me to pick a new template.

    Shouldn't that work?

DB:2.66:Moving Domain File To Another Mac js

I've put the Domain file in that location again and
again but something is still not right. Maybe the
program can't find the site on my local hard drive?

Are you sure you have the Domain.sites file?

Your iWeb data is stored, not in your actual html files, but in a file called Domain.sites which is stored in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. If you want to work on your site on another computer, copy this file to a thumb drive to move it around.

You should backup this file whenever you make big changes to your site, because if it gets lost or damaged, you will have to start all over. Sadly, many many people learn this the hard way.

I have an Automator app on my site that will help you backup your Domain file(s). Click here to download it or visit http://iweb.varkgirl.com for more info. The app will make a .zip file of your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and save it to a location of your choosing.

Then check out Mozy for an online place to store your backups - I just found this and it seems great. They just recently released a Mac friendly version of their app - it automates the upload and encryption. You select the files you want to backup and it does the rest. You can set it to upload automatically after so many minutes of inactivity or once a day. It does it all in the background so you don't have to worry about it! 2GB of storage are free - plenty of room for most people's iWeb Domain.sites backups!

Disclaimer: By clicking the aforementioned link to Mozy, which has my referral code in it, you earn yourself (and me) 256MB of extra storage space. If you don't want that to happen, just go directly to http://www.mozy.com and sign up that way. Either way, you will find a great service! :)

What I normally do is publish locally then upload
    using Fetch.

This has nothing to do with saving, backing up, or reopening your site in iWeb.

NFS datastores are mounted using the "old" NFS server IP address and there is no way to change the host field using esxcfg-nas (same limitation using the the VI client vCenter)

I found that this field is defined in the /etc/vmware/esx.cfg file. Do you think that changing the values in this file (and rebooting the host) will make ESX use the new addresses.

    DB:2.65:Moving Mailboxes mz

Yes, you can move users between Exchange servers including moving them to and from the Exchange server that resides on our box.You need to be sure the user in question is logged out of their mailbox before moving them or Exchange gets “confused” about which server holds that person’s mail. For instance if you have Outlook open and logged into a mailbox that you then go to the Exchange administrator and move, it will actually have two mail stores for that user until you reboot one or both Exchange servers. Not cool.Unity logs into everyone’s mailbox so we can, among other things, trigger MWIs and message notification events based on activity in your mailbox. We do this using the same basic interface as Outlook. As such you need to have us log out of the mailboxes you need to move. The easiest way to do this is to shut down Unity, move all your mailboxes and start Unity back up. If that’s not practical, the support folks can help you out by individually logging a particular user out. In general, however, I recommend shutting down Unity and doing all your mailbox moves and then bring us back up if you can do that.Jeff LindborgUnity Product ArchitectActive Voicejlindborg@activevoice.comhttp://members.home.net/jlindborg

    2. Exchange 2007

In the past with VMWare products (ESXi), I've experienced issues when moving VMs (especially DCs) from one host to another - I got an error on my clients stating the trust relationship between the computer the domain had been compromised, and the workstations
    refused to login.

How can I move these VM's correctly (Assuming iSCSI / Live Migration is not an option) so everything goes (touch wood) okay? Is there a guide / best practice how-to somewhere?

    TIA!

DB:2.64:Moving Dc/Exchange From One Hyper-V Host To Another aa

Running your ONLY DCs as virtuals willwork fine. I run many small networks consiting of a single blade servers running Win2008R2 SP1w/Hyper-V and all the resources are virtual servers and PCs on that same single blade. When booting
a blade from scratch the Hyper-V services start, Ihave myDC VMs set to autostart first with the rest delayed to give the DCs time to fully come up.
Only time I've had issues with DCs being virtual is in a cluster enviroment where the DCs are clustered VM resources. Cluster services seems to have issues starting when no DCs are online. No cluster services means the virtual clustered DCs don't
start (chicken or the egg senario). The solution was to make at least one (preferable two) virtual DCs that are setup to start in Hyper-V and not as clustered VMs. The rest of your VMs can then all be clustered.

    Here is my environment:

I have one vCenter 5.1 server in my TRUST (i.e. - internal private network) along with 2 clusters that I'm managing. One is a non-EVC enabled cluster that's running in the same TRUST network that my vCenter is on (i.e. - 10.x.x.x). The other cluster is an EVC enabled one that's located in my DMZ (i.e. - 192.x.x.x) and both environments are configured via a firewall for communication.

All ESXi host servers are running v5.1 U1 (1157734). I have 2 hosts in DMZ cluster and 4 hosts in TRUST cluster. I have 2 datastores for DMZ cluster that are shared and 10 datastores for TRUST cluster that are shared. I can vMotion and vStorage Motion successfully within each of the clusters with no problems. I'm also using the vSphere Web Client to manage all of this.

I recently moved a VM from TRUST network to DMZ successfully by doing a cold migration for various reasons such as both clusters are on separate networks, non-shared datastores between them, EVC vs. non-EVC, etc. Now, I'm trying to cold migrate the same VM back to the TRUST network and I'm getting the error "Cannot connect to host".

Is my only option here to remove VM from inventory, Import into TRUST cluster? Maybe that's what I did the first time around, just can't recall...again...possible brain dump here

**Update** - I just ran another test by moving another VM from TRUST to DMZ and it was successful. It's only when I try to move it back from DMZ to TRUST that it fails. I'm not getting much love from the community on this one, so looks like I'm just going to contact VMware support for this.

When applying system updates to the host and client in a clustered hyper-v service I have had some issues with the host restarting before the client was appropriately shut down or otherwise prepared to be failed over. After reboot the client has an error that windows was not properly shut down.I started a monthly manual process of moving any clustered resources to another node, patching the host and moving the resource back manually (or automatically if the preferred host was set) but the failover process produced the same error. It does not seem to be consistent so I assume it depends on how long the client is taking to properly shut down, for which I don't have control.

    DB:2.62:Clustered Hyper-V And Windows Update x9

If you patch the host/parent/physical server, do the following(this is the server running the Failover Cluster feature and the Hyper-V server role) :1) in Failover Cluster Management: move all Applications to another node.2) Patch the host/parent/physical server3) reboot4) in Failover Cluster management: move all Applications to the patched node5) continue at step 2 for the next Node, until doneRgds,Edwin.

    DB:2.62:Moving Vm's - Changing Data Store sc

    Hello,

This is a mutliplart question, but hopefully simple to follow. I need to move my VM's to another Data Store from my ESXi host / node, so I can upgrade the host harware. Quick background; we have a Dell T605 server running ESXi, with 1 RAID 5 array. We are going to upgrade the current RAID and add another RAID 1, using the RAID 1 for the console and the RAID 5 for our data store. We have another ESXi host on line now, and the main quaestion is what is the best way to move the VM's to the "temporary" host, while we upgrade the main host. The VM's do not need to be running, just what is the best way to copy them from one host to another? Once copied back to the "main" host, how ca we add these VM's back into our inventory? We have researchd moving the VM's using Fast SCP, and tested, works well, but we cannot figure out how to add this to our VM inventory in the VI Client cousole. Currtenlty we are testing using Vcenter converter. Not sure what the best, and quickest way is to perform our data copy / backup.

Thanks for your help and thoughts...

Thanks for your advice. I continued with Fast SCP to move VM's. Creating the clones in the ESXi environment was a little more than i wanted to get into for the moment. Much thanks to you for your help and advice!

    DB:2.62:Client And Host? xm

Not quite sure what you are saying here. But pretty sure the answer is Yes.

I have (many times) accidentally taken remote control of the computer I was currently on. It is mildly amusing, but the host/client preference for keyboard/mouse control kicks in to avoid the major issues you would think would happen.

I have also remotely accessed a computer, then used that computer (via remote) to remotely access another computer (iPhone to control work computer, work computer to open 6 workstations at once).

And every computer I use to do remote access from is also a computer I can have remote access TO at any moment.

So pretty sure one of those 3 is what you are asking about.

Has anyone tried moving Java Directory server (LDAP) from one host to another ?That is not having to reinstall the Directory server when moving hosts ?

I would like to know if anyone has and if any tips and tricks would be great. Thanks

DB:2.61:Possible To "Move" Java Directory Server ? k3

Yes, I tried to move the DS from a zone to the global yesterday. It was not fun or intuitive. You cannot simply copy instance's dir tree or certificates. The DS creates a certificate database with a randomized password, so you need a new instance to add the certificates back.

Start with backing up the old instance and copy the dir tree to the new server:

    dsadm stop $DSINS
    dsadm backup $DSINS /archive/path

On the new server create a new DS instance and restore to it:

    dsadm create $DSINS
    dsadm restore $DSINS /archive/path

Finally start it to see what breaks:

    dsadm start $DSINS

I ended up having to request and sign a new server cert. Though, it should be realized you need to create a new DS instance on a server with the original FQDN to add the old certificates back. I modified the local /etc/hosts and the DNS with the original CNAME as a pointer to the real hostname. I had no end of fun getting everything working again. All the clients needed to be re-initialized with the modified profile for the server list. BTW, if your profiles specify the old IP for the default server-list, your ldap clients will fail/hang when being initialized.

DB:2.61:Moving Guest Os On The Same San To Another Host jm

If you look at the virtual switch that your VMs are connected to, you'll see you Virtual Machine Port Group names (in the attached image its Victoria LAN / Victoria DMZ). Those would need to be identical on all your hosts. There's a reference to the port group name in the VMX for the VM. Likewise, if you use any VLANs on one host, you'd need the identical network setup on the other hosts.

As Iain mentions, ESX won't let you start the same VM on 2 ESX hosts, so you could leave the VM in inventory on both and you won't break anything.

As an aside, the next version of ESX (due maybe in December) will add the High Availability option to ESX standard so if you were to add virtualcenter you could configure HA for your hosts.

I have seen this on a couple of P2V's I've done in the past. Disabling anti-virus may help some, but two days is a long time for 250 GB to be transferred. When you are running the conversion, during the agent install question, uncheck remove agent after , then restart your source OS. Are you transferring windows 2000?

No files are moved during vMotion unless you are not storing virtual machine swapfiles on shared storage that is accessible by all host in the cluster.

If you have specified to store virtual machine swapfiles on local storage of the host this file will have to move to a location accesible by the destination host when a vMotion occurs. Either to that host's virtual machine swapfile location or to the virtual machines location on shared storage.

DB:2.60:How Do I Move A Server From One Host To Another? 9c

Here's a web page with a list of the files - http://www.vmware-land.com/Vmware_Tips.html#VM5. One thing to note is that you don't want to be moving the vmdk file (and flat.vmdk) directly with scp or cp/mv. You instead want to use the vmkfstools command if you are manually moving the file. This is to prevent corruption of the flat.vmdk file. You should also note that scp access for the root login is disabled by default so you'll need to create another account for this. FastSCP allows you to switch to the root login after you make the connection.

You might also want to try method 3 here - http://www.vmware-land.com/Vmware_Tips.html#VM1, but I would also take a look at VMware Converter - http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/. It's free and designed to handle this sort of task.

    Greetings,

I've just started with vCenter with an vSphere 4 Essentials license. We have three ESXi 4 hosts in our data center with 16 guests spread out between them. One of the guests is the vCenter server, as I read in the documentation that this was an approved configuration.

Now my issue is how to get this off the ESXi host that it's one so that I can use Upgrade Manager to upgrade the host.

    Is this a valid approach?

    1) shutdown the vCenter server/guest

    2) use the stand alone converter to move it from one ESXi host to another

    3) login to the ESXi host with the vCenter client directly

    4) startup the vCenter server/guest on the new ESXi host

There is no shared storage on these three at this point. It's my DEV/QA area and we are having issue with the iscsi SAN we've got making it unreliable. I'm moving the VM's off it so that I can do a major firmware upgrade on it.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated.

I can ping the router's LAN(int fa0 - 192.168.100.0/24) but not beyond that it fails.

Previously- i read somewhere, that the inside interface, have to disable with "no ip proxy-arp" and it works!

Now, i did the same thing, but no such luck ;-(

Secondly, if i add the router w another interface (fa1 - 192.168.110.0) - will reverse route, inject this route to the VPN client?

Thirdly, what't the best way if I want to VPN remotely to a server (via one internet line) using RDP

but the server will going out to internet (on another internet line) due the static public ip address requirement.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

used scp to move the files.. i tried moving all .vmx and .vmdk files but it took lots of time(10 mins)..

is there any other option? or which file i have to move so that i can reduce the time?

    Hello,

You could setup NFS and mount it on the target server then copy it from there.

SCP is fully encrypted data and it will be slow.

    Hi all,

We are trying to schedule moving a large number of VMs from our existing cluster onto a new cluster. The scheduled shutdown and migration work successfully but the power on operation fails with "A specified parameter was incorrect". Both clusters have HA and DRS configured.

I assume this is because the task is configured to power on the server on the old cluster. Is there a way to skip choosing the host/resource pool when powering on and have VC attempt to power on the VM on the host/cluster it currently is located?

    Thanks

I have a few vSphere clients in different client systems (Windows Server 2003 R2), which are one Desktop system, others are SuperMicro blade. I experienced GOS Console to Console moving in vSphere client takes very long time wait until the next Console access.

For example, I have 3 GOS VM in vSphere client per host. (ESX 4.0 GA)

I click 'Console' tab of the first VM in vSphere client. Click another VM, and click its 'Console' tab. Until I could access the second VM's Console window of vSphere client, it takes a couple of seconds to 20 seconds wait. I experienced this waiting times are different where my vSphere client is installed. the Desktop client system has Windows Server 2003, and have 2 GB memory. The second client system is in Blade server, which has 4 GB memory. They show different waiting time from one Console to the other.

For the working performance, is it matter of the memory size to reduce its Console access waiting time? Because the second system shows a little short waiting time usually, I wonder if my client systems need more memory for the fast response. Please help me to get your advice.

DB:2.58:Vmotion Fails: Out Of Memory... k8

Is this Windows 2000 system running with

    "workload=TerminalServices" set?

No, this value is not set. It is not a Terminal Server, just a server with a real hungry application.

This would indicate that the VMKernel does not

currently see any memory constraints that would

    prevent a maximal-configuration VM (2 vCPU, 3600 MB

vRAM) from starting up, assuming that memAutoMin is

    in effect for that VM.

Is sched.mem.minSize set for that VM, or is

    memAutoMin in effect?

Originally, I hadn't set a minimum memory value through VC and the migration would fail. Then I tried setting a minimum memory amount: 256 MB failed, and 128 MB failed. I'm pretty sure I tried 64 MB which also failed.

If you'd be willing to email me the SR number, I'd be

interested in looking at some of the other data for

your source / destination ESX Server systems from the

`vm-support` outputs on both systems. Email address

    is my userid @ vmware.com.

Will do! Thank you for all your help!

I have a vcenter server that is stored on a SAN and we want to move it to a different ESXi host. How would I go about doing that?

DB:2.57:Moving Vmware Server From One Host To Another While Keeping Same Location On San 7k

    Hi,

In adition, if you don't have a cluster yet, you can "move" the VM with this steps:

1.- Shutdown the VM, in this case the vCenter

2.- Login directly to the Hosts and right-click in the vm: "remove from the inventory" (this not delete the vm)

3.- Go to the Destinantion Host and browse into the Datastore that contains the VM

4.- Look inside the folder VM for the "name_server.vmx" ,righ-click and "add to inventory"

5.- Now you can poweron in the new Host

You can avoid to use the converter with this method

Any time we try to do anything to an ESX host in VC the client hangs...sits...sits...sits..and then gives a "remote server took too long to respond" message. It doesn't use CPU while it waits. I can click on VMs and look at performance, etc, just fine but if I try to pull up configuration or licensing information on an ESX host it fails. It also times out when moving VMs between hosts.

Couple of things I can think of is

    *reconnect hosts in VC

    *restart hosts

*Make sure your DNS have all correct entries of your hosts as well as VC server.

*reinstall VC will be another option, It has fixed couple of my issues.

    *Downgrade to VC 2.5

    I hope it helps

Just after a quick bit of guidance, moving to vCenter 4.1 decided to virtualise as new 2008 R2 64-bit server, all works great except now I need to make changes to the host I put it on and the CPU IDs don't match elsewhere to allow me to vMotion to another host. I assume best idea would be to bring the server down and remove it from its current host and then add to another host? After that I plan to put the hosts in clusters so I don't have this problem again!

    DB:2.57:Moving A Virtualised Vcenter 87

I don't treat the VC VM much differently, ie changing VM shell config settings..., the only best practices I follow are to not allow linked vCenter VMs to reside in a cluster they manage. Also, you want to pay attention to %RDY in ESXTOP with your vCenter VM. %RDY over 20-30 and you may start to see performance issues. I started seeing performance issues right above 30 %RDY in ESXTOP.

I'm unable to move our PAS / Dashboard server (which is currently a Virtual server) from one host to the next.

It seems that the problem is the encryption that is used to secure the connection string is tied to the MAC address of the network card, and therefore when the guest is on a new host, it doesn't have the same key to unencrypt and therefore fails.

How can I unencrypted the connection strings for PAS and Dashboard server on the current host so I can move hosts?
Either that, or what is the unencrypted connectionstrings for the PAS / Dashboard server - and I will replace the values with the server / username / password that is specific to my environment.

DB:2.57:Does 'Remove Esx From Vc Inventory' Affect Host Or Client Operation ? kj

I have managed, by mistake !, to get my one and only host 'disconnected' from my VC. When I try to reconnect the host the VC treats the host as a new machine and the reconnect fails as there are insufficient licenses.

The license page shows 2 licenses with 0 available.

I am anxious about restarting the host (lack of experience I guess) so would prefer some other method.

    Several questions :-

    1. Does running the (mgmt-vmware and vmware-vpxa) service restart instructions at the host CLI carry a risk for the host or client functioning ?

    2. If I remove the host from VC inventory, will that affect the host or client functioning ?

    3. Will 2. above free up the licenses so I can then connect the host as a new host ?

    Thanks - in anticipation.

    cheers

DB:2.57:Does 'Remove Esx From Vc Inventory' Affect Host Or Client Operation ? kj

    Hello,

If you remove a host/VM from within VC you will not effect the HOST/VM from running, just being able to be managed from VC. Your Host and all VMs associated with the host will dissappear from VC.

If you connect direct to the Host using the VIC you will see your VMs still.

However, if you remove a VM, it will remove it from the inventory for both VC based VIC and Host based VIC. To manage the VM you will have to readd it to the inventory. This should not affect an already running VM.

    Best regards,

    Edward

DB:2.57:Moving Host/Vms From One Cluster To Another W/O Vm Interruption? 7s

I'm currently working on consolidating some ESX servers to one, giving up a data center and cluster. Now I want move a host (member of data center A, cluster A) to be added to an existing datacenter B into cluster B with all the VMs running. Storage and network configuration are the same. Anyway, vSphere Client says that one has to put the host in maintenance mode, evacuating all the VMs before the host can be added to cluster B.

Does anyone have a work-around? Powering off the VMs/ESX is not an option.

    I'm running vSphere 4 Update 1.

    Thanks in advance!

DB:2.57:Moving Host/Vms From One Cluster To Another W/O Vm Interruption? 7s

Thanks for your answer; I figured out a solution myself:

    - Disconnect host from vCenter Server w/ VMs running.

    - Move it to new data center (add as stand-alone host)

    - Move it to new cluster, re-configure for HA

    Job done.

Wondering why VMware doesn't support this out of the box.

    Regards!

    DB:2.57:Workstation 9 On Linux Host - Client Hangs/Freezes - Unable To "Wake Client". 7j

I have workstation 9 host installed on a linux server. I have Windows 8, Windows 7 and Max OS vm's. Regardless of which client I startup, I fi walk away from the client - say after several hours - the screen is black and moving the mouse or hitting keys on the keyboard fails to wake the client. I end up rebooting (power off-on) the server to get access again. I found this note and followed the instructions by adding the entry to the *.vmx file. I tried it and waited several hours - no change. Any ideas?

another options use vmware convertor and do a v2v for vm on vsphere 5.1 in old storage to vsphere 5.5 in new storage.

shutdown vc on vsphere 5.1 and power on vc on vsphere 5.5.

DB:2.56:Update Manager Problem: "Remediation Failed" On One Esx 3.5 Host k1

    Hi there,

Im having a problem updating a (Dell 2950) ESX 3.5 host (version 3.5.0 build 110268) using Update Manager with Infrastructure Client and VirtualCenter (version 2.5.0 build 119598).

Scanning the host is successful, but the remediate fails.

I have been able to update another test ESX 3.5 host without a problem using the same update server.

Ive tried remediating one update, as well as all updates (22 are required) and the same error is given.

I have also tried moving all VMs to a different host, removing the host from the cluster, manually putting the host into Maintenance Mode, rebooting prior to attempting the update etc,... but still the same error is given.

The error from Update Manager is below.

I've logged a case with VMware but haven't got any advice yet.

Any assistance would be much appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Hugo

DB:2.56:Install Vsphere Client Fails Without Error... 81

    Hi,

i wanted to upgrade the vSphere client on my desktop. My issue:

The Setup starts, extracts the files, i select the language and then the process stops - without error, without an logfile.

I deinstalled all other versions, cleaned the temp-directory, but no effect

Tried to take another Version (VMware-viclient-all-5.0.0-623373.exe or VMware-viclient-all-5.1.0-786111.exe), tried to start the setup downloading from the ESXi-Host and the vCenter-ISO...

    I'm Using Windows 7 Ultimate, x64

    vSphere 5.0, ESXi 5.0 Update 1

    1 ESXi 5.1

Any ideas? Is there another directory about the logfiles?

    Thank you!!!

DB:2.56:Install Vsphere Client Fails Without Error... 81

    Hi all,

    i solved my problem:

Installing the client on another machine, but NOT finishing the installer. In the temp-directory (%Userprofile%\AppData\Local\Temp\) is a directory with the extracted installfiles. copy the "VMware vSphere Client #.msi" to my desktop and start the msi-Package.

    So the client was installed!

The msi-package was on my desktop never extracted before...

Perhaps this solution helps others, too

    Thanks!
