Hey, I have an LG Spectrum 2 and a friend of mine has a broken T-Mobile phone and wants to use it. Apparently, the Spectrums are already unlocked and he is going to put his SIM card in my phone. I don't need the phone, so I don't mind him using it, but he's saying he is going to "unlock" it and use it under his T-Mobile plan. Will this terminate my contract with Verizon?

DB:3.35:Can Someone Use My Phone On Their T-Mobile Service? fk

It should be unlocked since it is a 4G LTE phone. However it might not be carrier unlocked for the USA. It might have the GSM frequencies for a global ready device, but that's doesn't mean it will work on another US carrier.

You will need to activate a different phone on your line before your friend could even try to activate it on T-Mobile.

I am now on Social Security and wish to get on a government phone plan. Does Verizon have such a plan? If not can I cancel my plan (nine months to go) without a fee as I am now poor? I do need a phone and can get a plan from the government for $5.00. I cannot afford my plan any more. HELP!

DB:3.22:Cannot Afford Plan Any More 8f

When you got your current phone, you signed a contract to keep that line in service for 24 months. Did you not know that your income would be reduced for the last 9 months of that term? There are ways to trim your plan and still keep the line in service. Use the minimum allowed minutes, cut out the texting and the data plan (put an old non-smartphone on the line to cut the data plan if necessary.) The least you will be able to pay is the $39.99 450 minute individual plan. Can you do that for the last 9 months?

THe other alternative is to cancel, but you will pay $175 less $5 for each cvompleted contract month, so if you have 9 months left, your ETF will be $120. If the phone you r purchased on contract is a smartphone, the fee is $350 less $10 for each completed month - or $240.

You may be better off minimizing your plan for the last 9 months. The $5 a month sounds very attractive, but you will have to fulfill your current contract to Verizon or pay the ETF.

Hey guys and gals - I currently have T-Mobile with my wife on a family plan. She gets the 3GB and I get 1GB ($50 first line / $30 second line). With the OPO my WiFi enabled days have ended and hers continues since she has the Samsung S5 via T-Mo. I have been using airplane mode a lot to conserve the date on my phone and hence only come close to the 1GB, however, sometimes it is a pain to keep doing that. I usually put the phone on airplane mode during sleeping hours so that will continue. I probably would not use more than 2GB of data per month as I am not a phone hog.

I have heard good things about Cricket and their basic plan seems fine for me with unlimited text and calls and 2.5GB data. Or I can go with T-Mobile $30 pre-paid plan with 5GB data, unlimited text and 100 voice minutes. I rarely come close to using 100 voice minutes so that is fine.

Speed test using T-Mobile at my house shows 32.30 Mbps DL, 8.85 UL and Ping 40. My home WiFi shows 3.96 Mbps DL, 1.40 UL and 48 Ping. My understanding is Cricket goes as high as 8 Mbps for DL. That is a huge difference between the two companies.

Any thoughts on which direction I should head? Thanks to all the OPOers out there!

DB:3.18:Getting Put On Brothers Plan. 73

Are you already on a Verizon account? Or are you coming from a different carrier?

If you're on a Verizon account currently, and are in contract, you'll have to do an Assumption of Liability to get on your brother's account. I believe this would require your brother.

if you're coming from a different carrier and porting your number, that can be done with your brother's My Verizon information, andSSN I believe (or account #, billing #, etc)

If you're starting over completely clean and aren't on an account elsewhere, this can be done online by logging into your brother's My Verizon account, and selecting Add A Line, and then putting all the information in and taking the steps from there.

Yes you can use your SIM card in a GoPhone. Pantech p7040 is not a smartphone so that a data plan is not required. The Avail is a smartphone and a data plan will be added to your contract account. The remaining phones are left as an exercise for you.

DB:3.17:Can't Use My Data With My New Phone. Why? ps

I am on my mother's contract as a family line. She gets 10gb of data per month, as far as I know. I had bought an Avail 2 Go Phone recently, with it's own monthly plan (talk and data). Once I got the SIM for the line she had added for me on her own plan, I quit using the SIM I had gotten with the Avail phone. When I put the contract SIM into the Avail, I could use the data. She then gave me a Windows phone that she wasn't using any longer. So I put the contract SIM into this phone and can no longer use the data. Switched same SIM back to Avail and can still use the data in that phone.

What gives? That Avail phone is terrible, very staticy, weak signal. But being able to use what we pay for is a big plus. Why is that so, though? Why can data be used on the Go Phone and not the contract phone? It really makes no sense...

    Prepaid QWERTY

You should take a look at it both ways, but if you purchase a device that is only available as a post paid (contract) phone for use on prepaid service, you'll have to pay att's "No Commitment" price, which is far more expensive than buying one designated for prepaid service. So I'd start with the phones available for prepaid service, and if you can't find anything to your liking there then use the post paid "Quick Messaging Device" link to look at additional options. (Any phone you choose can be used on either prepaid or post paid service - it's just a matter of which service type is provisioned on the SIM card.)

I don't know if it is still available or not, but I believe there is also a Nokia C3 that was available fairly recently as a GoPhone at WalMart and has a physical keyboard.

That's the route I would take. I personally don't care for touchscreens and have always found Nokia to be durable phones (living up to the many drops I put it through) with really good battery life.

If you are currently on an Individual Plan, you will need to move to a Family Share plan in order to add a line to your account. You can find the details on different Family Plans by clicking on the "Plans" button in the red bar at the top of this page. A basic family plan includes service for two lines, and a Talk Text plan includes unlimited texting for all lines on the plan.

Each line must have its own data package, so unlimited data for two lines would be 2 x $29.99/month or about $60/month.

I know with Koodo you can, as they are on the tab system. You just pick the plan you want and certain percentage of monthly fee gets deducts off the tab.

Honestly, if you're bringing your own smartphone to ATT, it's probably better to go into an ATT store. You can't add a line to the plan you have for a couple of reasons. A) the plan you have is no longer offered and B) even if it was, your plan is only for a single line. If you already had a plan that allowed multiple lines (Family Talk), then you could add the new line to that plan. However, there should be no reason you can't have 2 different plans on your account. You should be able to keep the plan you have on your 5s but the new line will have to get one of the new plans.

You really should consider putting both lines on the new plan, though. It will probably be much cheaper.

I also plan on getting a chocolate touch which requires the 9.99 data plan. If I purchase the phone on 4/10 will I be prorated from that date for the data plan or will the package start when I actually activate the phone?

bascially I want to know if i can purchase the phone online at the discount price and wait until I switch my calling plan to activate the phone and start paying for the data package, or if I will be paying for the extra cost starting the day of phone purchase.

    DB:3.05:Upgrade Question, Buying Online 9s

If you have a NE2 credit it is best to upgrade first and then do the AOL like others have said. You'll lose the NE2 credit if you don't do it in that order. As for the prorates when you do an AOL you will be prorated...the only way that wouldn't happen if you and your boyfriend have the same bill cycle date and do the AOL on the first day of a new cycle.

If I were you this is probably what I would do. Upgrade online when you get the phone call the 800 number on the paper, accept the TC's, say you want to activate the phone later(this will not change your phone but will start the data package), call customer service or remove that data package online that same day. Then when you do the AOL activate the phone and start the data package. If you activate it on your plan and then a few days later do the AOL you will be prorated from the date you added the package till the AOL is complete and prorated on your BF's plan from the date the AOL was complete to the bill cycle. At least this eliminates one part of the prorates.

The only thing when buying on the internet is you need to buy a Pay As You Go phone, add some money to the account and perform a chargeable activity (phone call, messaging, downloads — anything). This is to satisfy the TC when buying on the net that the device will be used as a GoPhone and that it will be activated.

It says I have a 50 dollar plan but it suddenly stopped my calling telling me my balance reached none I just put the refill card on my phone 3 days ago. I don't know what i did wrong?

    DB:3.03:I Need Help!!! k7

    From the website:

Simply pay your $50 plan fee each month no later than 11:59 p.m. prior to your renewal date. Your renewal date is the same day each month and starts 30 days from when you sign up.

You can add money so it's there for ringtones and games and stuff, BUT it sounds like you need to pay at least $50 by the expiration each month to keep the account active.

Is that what you did? You can call Prepaid CS (888-294-6804) for details on your account, and hopefully get this straightened out.

Doesn't matter if Sandra got the upgrade or not. Her post was 16 months ago. LONG before Verizon new policy on unlimited data and upgrading went into effect. If you take a discounted upgrade you lose unlimited. If you pay full price you can keep unlimited. Also I doubt Sandra is reading this board looking to see if someone replied to a 16 month old question she asked and has gotten answer to 16 months ago.

You can use your current phone. You will need to do what is called an Assumption of Liability, to take over your line (number) on your own account. The account owner will need to authorize the change, Verizon will run a credit check, and depending on the results, you may need to pay a substantial security deposit.Message Edited by SuzyQ on 08-20-2009 03:40 PM

I have a question regarding whether or not it's possible to take 2 phones that are on a 'shared minute / txt' plan but each has a different data plan.

    Here's the situation:

Phone # 1 has Unlimited Data but the user only hits around 300MB / month (terribly underutilized); User on Phone # 1 wants to keep phone number
Phone # 2 has awesome 4G LTE capability but is on a 2GB / month data plan. It would be easy for User on Phone # 2 to go over the 2GB limit. User on Phone 2 wants to keep phone number.
Phone # 3 is all set on Unlimited Data; User on Phone # 3 is very happy!

Can the numbers and phones be swapped between Phone # 1 and Phone # 2 so effectively, Phone # 2 takes over Unlimited Data and Phone # 1 takes over 2GB / month data plan while both phones keep the numbers that are currently on them? (This arrangement could be thought of as trading data plans).

The key here is I DO NOT want to trigger anything on any of the 2 phones that currently have Unlimited Data, to lose the Unlimited Data plan. I've bought 2 phones at Full Retail to keep Unlimited Data and would be happy to continue purchasing phones at Full Retail the rest of my time on Verizon if it continues to be something Verizon will allow.

    Thanks in advance!

DB:3.00:I Want To Swap Data Plans To Put Unlimited Data On Different Line In Same Plan 1x

You CAN switch phones from 1 line to another without losing you unlimited data, but you CANNOT switch your unlimited data from 1 line to another.

So yes, you can switch phone #2 with phone #3, but if you want to keep your unlimited data, phone #2 will have to switch to phone #3's phone number(line) and phone #3 will have to switch to phone #2's number(line).

    Short answer: No

Long Answer: No, there is no way of putting a post-paid account plan on hold. You will still be liable for the base cost of your plan as per your contract.

You will also need to make sure that your bill is getting paid while you are away otherwise with the new Credit Reporting rules that came into affect recently you may find that your credit rating is damaged when you get back due to non-payment.

I need mobile broadband only a day or so a week for my "on the road" sales calls.

A Verizon Rep told me I could use my own USB aircard (Verizon) on an "as needed basis" if I had a Verizon phone plan. I would be charged the pro-rated amount based on the 59.99 bradband plan. I would just have to login or call 611 to activate it or turn it off.

I was ready to sign up but just found out that I have a big $ penalty if I switch my phone service from T-mobile to Verizon before Jan of 2010.

Would Verizon let me just do the pay-as-you-go plan on the mobile broadband (not the month-to month plan) without having to have a phone on the plan?

    Thanks for any input.

DB:2.99:Mobile Broadband -Can I Get A Pay-As-Needed Option (Not Month To Month) Without The Phone Plan? pk

If you have a Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband device that is not active or associated with any bad accounts, you can use what is called a "Day Pass". Its $15 per day. You can also do the month tomonth to month option with contract, but it still requires a credit check.

So...if you will use it more than 4 days out of the month, you are better off with the month to month option. You will also pay an activation fee for the month to month (only one as long as you keep the service active). That's also why I wouldn't suggest frequently cancelling and re-activating on month to month because it will end up costing you quite a bit in activation fees.

When I first purchased my Blackberry, 1 1/2 years ago, I was told that I had to activate it on a data plan and to use the phone as modem was 15.00 month. This was all fine. Now Sprint will not allow you to add phone as modem to the data plans.I was trying to get on the everything data share plan and all Sprint could do is put me on a basic plan and then add Blackberry Internet Service and Phone as Modem. So the way it is set up now I have an additional 50.00 on my bill. At thispoint I don't really see the point in having a Blackberry if you can't use all of the functions.

hello, thank you for sharing your experience with Sprint. I hope that it will help someone like to to consider which carrier choose for that feature.I guess that from a Sprint point of view, they are used to blocking features if it threatens their business model (like the MMS), or when it concerns few people (like the tethering capability).

you realize that only certian parts of att have band 4 lte right?

I my area ATT use band 5 and 17 for LTE. So in theory yes if a verizon phone has Band 4 it will work in markets that ATT has band 4. I know att had went with band 5 and 17 more and more because of the overloaded band 4. I know band 12 deployment is suppose to happen sometime in 2015.

I was just using the Nexus 5 as an example as it is true multi carrier.

    '

Ponder this if you buy a Iphone full retail you should get one from verizon as it has all the ATT radio bands plus cdma bands.

Yes, you should be able to activate it without a data plan. If for some reason the system (i.e., if you activate on-line) requires you to add a data plan, you should be able to just choose one so that the phone will activate, then call Customer Service and have them remove it and put a data block on it.

The phone will say its data connected but I get no H+ or 3g or anything by signal bars to indicate data transfer. What is different about the data on the $60 plan from the $40 dollar plan that makes it not work with my phone?

P.S I dont know why they ask me what phone i have as it works great with the $40 plan data conection

i have a Star N8000 smart phone MTK6575 Cortex A9 1GHz CPU (Galaxy Note clone)

    DB:2.97:Data Conection Problems 38

OK I figured it out after an hour at att store and looking online:

the Star N8000 will not get picked up by ATT as a smart phone, nether the serial number nor the IMEI will come up in ATT's system so in all actuality and from others have told me that the $50 unlimited plan works great on this phone as ATT doesn't recognize it as a smart phone lucky for me.

hope this helps anyone with cheap Chinese phones out there.

Yes, you can do an Assumption of Liability for your number. This will involve a credit check. Once this has been done, you will be placed on a individual plan. The account holder of the family share plan will need to contact Customer Care to make the request to move your number to your on account. You have to resume responsibility within 30 days of the request.

    DB:2.94:Can I Downgrade From The I-Phone If I Decide I Don't Want It Later? 31

I currently am eligible for an upgrade, and was considering an iphone...If I get one, and sign up for the data plan (which is mandatory), and for some reason I decide I don't want to use the iphone, or I lose it/gets stolen/breaks, or even if I just am tired of paying an extra $30 every month, can I just "downgrade" and go back to my RAZR and drop the iphone data plan? I spoke to an att customer service rep on the phone today and he told me that indeed I could do this, just take the sim card out and put in back in my RAZR and adjust the plan to remove the iphone data plan? IS this true? Thats the only think holding me back from getting an iphone, is that I thought you would be "stuck" with a $30 data plan for 2 years no matter what..thats over $700 for data alone..was a little scary when I looked at it like that.

I narrowed my upgrade down to either an iphone or the samsung eternity as a data-less (and $30 a month cheaper) alternative, which still is a pretty neat little phone...depending on what the answer to this question is really might be the deciding factor.

    DB:2.94:Can I Downgrade From The I-Phone If I Decide I Don't Want It Later? 31

    t_money662 wrote:

Thats reassuring, since I am going to renew my contract fot another 2 years no matter what..if not iphone then the samsung eternity. So what about the iphone's functions as not a "working phone" without a sim...ipod, apps, wi-fi?

And I can still get an updrade when the time comes? In other words, will I be penalized bt att if I decide to switch back in the future..not that I am planning on it, but you never know..

Some have said the iPhone works without a SIM as an iPod Touch. I have not tried it but most cell phones look for a SIM first and don't let you get beyond the missing SIM message. Maybe the iPhone is different?

As for your question about still getting an upgrade? You are eligible for discounted pricing every two years from the time you received a new phone at the discounted price. Once you have a phone, you can move the SIM around as much as you want you just need to ensure that you have the right data plan on the phone at the time it is being used. I would not recommend doing this frequently as your bill could easily be messed up with prorated charges.

Anything that the phone is designed to do will still work when you use a prepaid phone as an "upgrade" for your post paid plan. Although att does change the functionality of their branded phones (compared to the manfacturers' generic versions), they haven't been known to change the functionality of devices that are offered for prepaid vs. post paid service. Blue tooth and SMS should certainly work.

We are considering upgrading from "dumb" to smart phones. I was looking for some kind of family friendly plan but was unable to find one. I was also looking for a "bring your own phone" plan where there is no monthly phone cost embedded into the plan. I was unable to find that either. Before switching to a less expensive carrier, I want to be positive that I have exhausted my options with Verizon....

As far as I can tell, the least expensive smart phone service for a family of 5 from Verizon will cost $17,200 over 5 years including 5 new phones.

T-Mobile, with the same 5 phones is $9,500 over 5 years.

I understand the Verizon network is better and agree with that statement. However, I'm not convinced, in my case, that it's worth $8,000 over 5 years.

I can see paying a premium to T-Mobile for Verizon's better network coverage, but the current premium is 245% (270 per month vs 110).

    1) Is there a plan that does not have the phone cost embedded?

    2) Is there a 3rd party that re-sells Verizon services that offers such a plan?

    3) Is my math off for the cost (40*5+70) ?

    4) Can I put a smart phone on the network with NO Data Plan where only wifi would be used for data?

    DB:2.92:Family Plans? fx

Are you a current Verizon Wireless customer? If so, what plan do you have now? There is current no difference in the monthly cost for service if you bring your own devices.

Smartphones on Verizon Wireless' network require a data plan

It telling you to contact them because your trying to get on there network. It's your device that needs to connect to there network so it can talk to the EE network to see if it's allowed on there network. (And yes I know how that sounds). Your device needs permission to use their network it gets that permission from EE. If you don't have roaming enabled on your account EE doesn't give permission for you to use the foreign network. You need EE at activate roaming on your account. Like I've said above.

I'm new to owning a blackberry pearl. I seeon t-zones that I can sign up for t-mobile's 5.99 unlimited plan and not have to pay $20/month for the blackberry plan. Right now I only want to use the internet and not retrieve e-mails, so I don't want to spend $240/yr if I can do the cheaper plan. I signed up, changed the APN to the wap.voicestream and downloaded Opera mini as I have seen on other forums and threads when I googled this. I am able to go on the internet via t-zones, but Opera mini does not connect. When I put the sim card back in my previous phone (Motorola with cracked screen), I am able to use Opera, but switching back to the pearl doesn't allow me to do this. The various threads that I have read don't make it clear whether I can use Opera or even need it or the that the internet is only accessibe via t-zones and you need the more expensive plan to use Opera. Anyone have a definitive answer? Thanks!Message Edited by markf8 on 08-13-2008 09:35 AM

DB:2.91:Smart Phone Without Data Plan? Possible? 38

I have an I phone but I cannot afford it. I was told that I could buy a new phone and change my plan to only voice and messaging (that way I would avoid cancellation fees) I want to know if I can buy a smart phone and put only the voice and messaging on it. They will cut the data on my I phone and switch my plan to only messaging and voice which will save me a bundle; but later, if I want, they can add the data back and use my I phone. Apple I phones are different they say. Can anyone help me on this? (I was told to buy a Go Phone at the store and I would rather not do that).

if I own my phone and not from ATNT, then why would my accessing wifi which I already can do affect you if I want to hook up my phone to talk /txt? the tracking controlling programs on my attnt phone, I am sorta new to the concept of your personal expensive to use cellphone as a mandatory tracking device, it makes me nauseous. I now turn off the phone and remove the battery when I am not using it, and guess what I learned by this? my voicemail wont work but my text msgs do work. its like those people sentenced to prison by ankle bracelet.

if my phone cant see my eyes thru the front camera, I am not allowed to use it, the screen goes black. I wouldnt have done this if I knew how extreme it really was. I wished I got the dumb phone and the wifi thing instead which I almost did. I understand that device hasnt been working right since at least last september so maybe it is being discontinued.

listen people, do this if you want but you should have your eyes open about what youre holding in your hand. I am seeking a solution and I thought it would be blackberry, when this contract is done, but I am very leery of letting atnt touch my blackberry not even thru a tether connection.

lets talk about atnt,s interest in the privacy of their customers because that is what this data policy is really all about. sorry so long winded but I think this is all related.

Look you are NOT going to be able to get unlimited data on a smarthpone. And even if you could use that plan if you look at the fine print the "unlimited" data is limited to 1X speeds. That's not even 3G. That maxes out at 150 kbps. About 3 times dial-up speed.
