Windows security updates add important protection to your computer. They don't slow your computer down, and you shouldn't remove them. They're not the same thing as updates to your AVG antivirus. Both types of updates are needed.

DB:3.43:Removing Obsolete Listings From The Addremove Program List 89

I'm working on cleaning up an old system running Windows XP Pro. The system has two hard drives... the second of which crashed and burned in an unrecoverable manner. Software that was installed on the second hard drive is gone and will not be re-installed
on the replacement drive. The problem this presents, although perhaps minor but annoying none the less, is that the programs that were on the second drive show up on the Add/Remove Program list accessed through the Control Panel even though they no longer
really exist on the system. Is there a proper way to clean the Add/Remove Program list of entries for programs that were lost and never to be recovered because of a hard drive crash like this? Also, are there any other recommended proceedures for cleaning
all traces of programs from the system that have been lost in this manner? Trying to remove traces of these programs using the Add/Remove list does not work of course because the listed entries reference locations and files that no longer exist.
    Thank you.

DB:3.43:Removing Obsolete Listings From The Addremove Program List 89

download ccleaner from piriform. Click on tools uninstall. Highlight the entries which are listed but are no longer actually installed. Then choose to delete them. Reformatting is an extreme measure for such a simply resloved issue. As far as
running the registry cleaner tool of ccleaner I have personnally used it for several years without a single incident. This does not apply to all registry tools however.

I've actually been using CCleaner for a while but never looked too closely at its Add/Remove Program features before. Glad to hear from another satisfied costumer a review of CCleaner as a trustworthy tool.
In case you haven't had time to read through all the replies above I have managed to cleanup the system in question using CCleaner on the Add/Remove Programs list, registry, and files in general. Also went through the contents of the drive by hand and carefully
deleted obsolete files and folders before running
Diskeeper to defragment the drive. System is now running quickly and smoothly again while I search for a replacement drive(s).
Thank you also for recommending Glary Utilities by Glarysoft, and for providing links to the software you recommended. Much appreciated!

Go to C:\Program Files and look for a folder named C:\Program Files\MFC (if there is no such folder, search in C:\Program Files for "MFC"; if that doesn't turn something up, search the entire hard drive for "MFC").
If you still can't find it, download
JDiskReport (it's free). Run this and it will show you what is taking up space on your hard drive.
Assuming that you find C:\Program Files\MFC, look in it for *.exe files, particularly one named MFC.exe. Right click on the file and see if the file's properties reveal something about the nature of the file and, in particular, the name of the company that
created it. Also look for any readme.txt files or the like.

Why does it show run months ago in add/remove? Does this mean I have a virus that is blocking it? My computer runs fine but you never know. Any help/answers?

DB:3.22:Looking In Addremove Programs Microsoft Security Essentials Shows Last Run Months Ago-Virus xz

    Hi Woody,

It's not that. If you look in MSCONFIG.EXE, MSE starts using "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe" - hide - runkey. That means it's really using the registry run command in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to start the program. So the actual command programfor MSE in the Add/Remove file is not really being used to open the program (or the codes are hiding usage and/or transferring it to the
registry run command). My own shows 9/16/2011 as the last run date (and I've no idea why it even shows up then).

If the icon is green and when you open MSE it is green tinted and shows protection is enabled and it is updating and doing scheduled scans properly, then you're fine and don't worry about that entry which is due more to the method by which that list determines
entries in that field than on the reality of what is actually happening with the program (especially if it uses other methods to run and especially with those special codes in the startup command).

In short, you're fine and have nothing to worry about. While it's confusing and perhaps should be addressed (assuming those codes aren't there exactly to make this information hard to find perhaps as a security measure to guard against malware that might
look for that date), I've rarely seen anyone use Add/Remove programs for this purpose and wouldn't have noticed this if you hadn't raised the issue.

Don't worry. If what I said above is true, all is well and this is just an intentional or unintentional glitch in the Add/Remove program listing (and also inthe actual Windows Explorer file information as well - though that shows yet another date (1/3/2012)-
but I am using the Beta so that may have something to do with it).

I hope this helps and alleviates your concerns. You need not worry about this. I can't fully explain the rationale beyond what I said above, but I'm not sure anything further is available to anyone outside the MSE design team itself (assuming they even
know since while it may be confusing at least to us, it is not an issue to be concerned about).

    Good luck!

When they came out with Java 7 earlier this summer, it was supposed to uninstall Java 6 Update 29. It didn't on either my old XP or my Vista computers. Today they proffered another Java 7 update that I deem was to basically resolve issues, and this one
did eliminate the old program from my Vista laptop when it offered to do so during the update process.

But Java 6 Update 29could not be automatically removed on the XP unit. Java's install windows suggested I manually remove it, but as before there is no "Remove" option button listed with that old Java 6 program when it is highlighted on the Add/Remove
Programs list. As alluded above, Java's own uninstall tool can't seem to remove Java 6 Update 29, at least not from an XP operating system.

Is there any resolution for the XP stuck with Java 6 taking up space?

Hopefully the Vista laptop will run better now, as it incessantly flashed 2 pop-ups in sequence at me from User Account Control re. a program needed my permission to continue, Java SE Runtime Environment 7 Update 65, and ssvagent.exe. Never did that before
    the Java 7 install.

The add/remove program comes up, but the system must have recorded the presence of additional program copies on my external hard drive backup system, so now it's looking at those and preventing me from re-uploading the same program after uninstalling it
(was told to uninstall and reinstall iTunes by an Apple tech).

iTunes now won't reinstall, because the add/remove programs system thinks there is an old copy of Bonjour (needed to run iTunes) on my computer, which there is not. Hooking up my external drive is also not working. I would have thought that would solve it,
but the Add/Remove program does not think that the correct copy is on that drive.

Can I/do I have to go into the system files and delete the folders somehow so they don't show up under Add/Remove Programs? In other words, how do I wipe the memory of these other programs off of the Add/Remove software list, so iTunes will then reload? Thanks!

DB:3.13:Addremove Program Loads But Cannot Find The Program 8x

Congratulations, and thanks for the feedback.

I generally stay away from Microsoft "FixIt" routines because the documentation for these things is essentially non-existent. Microsoft won't tell you what they do ... and I like to know what changes are being made to my computer before I make them. Microsoft
also usually doesn't tell you what version of Windows the FixIt is designed for; "click it and find out what happens" seems to be Microsoft's position.

But I'll put the link to this install cleaner in my notes.

You describe accurately the behavior of Add/Remove Programs when you manually uninstall something: the link stays there until you try to use it -- when you do, you get an error message and the link is deleted. See the description of this for a similar situation

    Hi,

What is the exact issue that you are facing in the computer?
Are you referring to Windows media player?
What are the formats of the files that you are trying to play using the WMP?

Since WMP is integrated in Win 7, it'll be displayed in Windows Features instead of Programs list.

Please follow the suggestions below if you are facing issues with Windows media player:

Method 1: Try using the troubleshooter to see if that fixes the problem.

Open the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Media-Player-Settings-troubleshooter

Method 2: Uninstalling and Reinstalling the Windows Media Player:

Step 1. Uninstalling the Windows Media Player:

    1. Go to Start and in the search type "Turn Windows features On or Off".
    2. Click on "Turn Windows features On or Off".
    3. Browse to the Media Features and uncheck the mark in front of
    Windows Media Player.
    4. Restart the computer

Step 2. Reinstalling the Windows Media Player:

    2. Click on "Turn Windows features On or Off".
    3. Browse to the Media Features and place a check mark in front of

DB:3.11:I Installed Windows 8 Over Windows 7 And Now Wish To Reverse The Action But Cannot Find Windos 8 In Addremove Programs. How Do I Do This. z1

You are seing the win8 desktop, in a win7 like view, you have not reverted to win7.

If you realy wish to revert to win7 then:-
Backup your data to external media, verify that that media is readable.
Insert your win7 dvd and reboot from that dvd, early in the process of installation, delete any partitions found, then commence the installation of win7 useing all the disk space.
You will lose everything on the PC, haveing installed and allowed windows update to do its thing, which may take several restarts, then restore your data from the backup, and install your programs.
Immediately stop whatever you are doing if it results in an err msg

It can take quite some time depending upon how many programs/updates are installed. Otherwise one of these may resolve it:

    1. In a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL (the capitals are for clarity only but note the space) and press Enter. Then again type
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll and press Enter.

    2. Run your ‘anti’ programs as it could be an infection.

Windows repair but won't boot from disc. Checked BIOS setup - ok.
    never seen this before.

DB:3.09:Function Missing From Addremove Program 91

    Hi Kingb501,

·What happens when you try to boot from the disk?
·Is it only Microsoft Office application icons missing?
·Are the icons missing from start menu or desktop?

When you run the virus scans if the security software detects virus then it quarantine the icons affected. Also not all programs show the size in Add or remove program.

No this is not correct answer for what I want to do ... You seams do not understand what was the question or I didn't explain it to clearly. Don't worry. I have Polish version of XP and I usually dont know what the buzz had translators when they had translated
    MS WINDOWS XP to Polish.

Meanwhile I found that correct answer should be:

    1) Find Properties in Start - under RMB
    2) Chose Personalize
    3) Look for "show small icons in menu" and [X] it.

Surprisingly this did what I need.
All programs in Start are now visible and are not being hidden according to recently usage.

Your issueref scans is possiblycaused by CCleaner:
Are you using CCleaner? Piriform has programmed it for some reason to remove part of the MSE History files and it's deleting the files MSE checks to determine the last time a scan was conducted.

Open CCleanerApplications Tab, Under Windows uncheck MS Antimalware...that should prevent CCleaner from deleting the MS Antimalware scanning historyfiles. The actions of CCleaner
should not have any effect on the antimalware protection provided by MSE.
Per suggestion of MSE User MartinHampton you may also need to uncheck MS Management Console.
You mayneed to run a "Quick Scan" and possibly re-boot the computer to re-establish a scan history.

Ok so I just upgraded my windows vista home basic to windows 7 home premium (on an iMac!) and I love it. I do have one problem thought. I installed a few programs like call of duty 1 and limewire. Everything runs fine and much faster than vista but when
I go into the add/remove programs list , the programs like call of duty and limewire have a lot of missing information such as their size, publisher while other programs have all their information. Also, these two programs have weird icons instead of their
own icons. I don't mind this but I'd like the add/remove programs to show all of the information on my installed programs.
Any ideas on how to find the missing information? I'm not very used to windows since I use OS X more.
    Andrew

DB:2.97:Missing Program Information In Addremove Programs 3a

I don't think it is a compatibility problem as such but more of a programming problem if you believe the information in that first link? It could be that you are just not showing the "Details" that you want? Open up Programs and Features and via the View
menu select "Details", when in that view, go back to the View Menu and this time select "Choose Details" (a different option). Look at the columns offered to you in the "Choose Details" window.

If you want to see which MSI files are for which programs etc, either
browse to your C:\Windows\Installer folder (a Hidden and System file) or click Start Menu, RUN, and type
Installer and hit OK. Then click the View menu of the resulting window, click Choose Details
and select the checkbox called "Subject", leave alone any already ticked boxes. The Installer folder will populate after a few moments and you can see which .msi files you have and what programs they relate to via the "Subject" heading (Tab) listing.
If you don't have a View menu item, click on Organize/ Layout, to get the Menu Bar showing.
If you had .msi's in there (you perhaps wont) a right-click on it will offer you an uninstall option.
It may be necessary to show Both Hidden and System Files, and also to uncheck "Hide known file types" in Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View, to navigate to the mentioned Installer folder location.

Thanks for posting in the Windows Answers Forum! What are the exact programs that you are missing? I would recommend that you try a couple things. One option would be to uninstall Internet Explorer 8 and see if your programs reappear. You can also
    try to perform a
system restore, making sure to choose a restore point that predates the installation of Internet Explorer 8. After performing either of these steps, check and see if your programs reappear. If they do, try reinstalling Internet Explorer and then check to
see if the programs are still listed in the Add/Remove window.

I would also like to refer you to a Microsoft page entitled
Program Is Not Listed in Add/Remove Programs After Installation. This page lists information regarding troubleshooting this issue on Windows NT Server but may also work on Windows Vista.

Please let me know if this helps J

Neither Norton nor Ad-aware are particularly good. Norton will not catch non-viral malware either. Take the time to go through the malware removal steps I already gave you or take the machine to a local professional. Screensavers from places like screensavers.com
and freeze.com are not truly free - they come with malware. If you got the screensavers from a social networking site link (Facebook, MySpace), it is even more important that you determine whether your computer is really clean since those sites are vectors
for infection. If you use a local professional, don't go to a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

DB:2.95:Not All Programs Listed In Addremove as

    Hello,

Suddenly, not all of my programs a showing up in the Add/Remove feature. I tried the registry thing, with the 64 chars, and make it less, but do you have to do that to the Service pack and Update Displaynames too? Because the other things are all under
    the 64 chars.

DB:2.95:Not All Programs Listed In Addremove as

    Hi Geethu B,

I also have the same problem. Suddendly, Programs and features only displays Microsoft apps. I can get access to the "missing" apps through both the apps screen and the Program Files folder (by clicking on .exe files). The only relevant event thathas occurred
on my system was acouple ofWindows Updates (Windows Malicious Software Removal tool - KB890830; Security Update -KB2993651).I am not completely sure whether those have something to do with it, but theMalicious Software Removal ToolUpdate has automatically
installed on my computer up to three times within the last month, and I have not installed any new software and my antivirus has not detected anything at all.

I run sfc /scannow and there were some corrupted files that could not be repaired, so I am stuck at this moment and don't know what to do other than reinstalling the whole system.

In control panel, click on add/remove programs. Nothing , just white.

DB:2.95:Addremove Program Will Not Populate 8c

I am stillstrugling with this problem of not being able to add/remove programes from Microsoft XP pro. What I have discovered is that the problem is caused by the Automatic updates service. If I shut it off I can access the Add/remove listing. However
this has opened me to viruses. The viriuses have been cleared up but I had to place the Automatic update function service back into operation. Again I have lost the ability to access the add/remove function. Aparently there is a file of some sort that needs
to be replaced. Surley there is somebody at Microsoft that can better understand what is going on than I do. I sure would appriciate any suggestion as to what to do to correct this problem.

    Sincerely Ed Walsh

Donna, to shut down the Automatic update function temporarily, You can enter the System Configuration Utility by typing MSCONFIG at the command prompt or the run box. then click on Services and scan down the list for the Automatic update function and
remove the check from only that entry. When you come out you will be offered to reboot.. Agree to reboot. When the computer boots up again agree to continue with out rebooting. Then click on the control panel and then double click on the Add/remove icon.
wait a while and it will be repopulated. After completing what you wish, go back to the System Configuration Utility, click on services, and restore the check mark on the Automatic update entry. It works for me. However, there has to be a better solution.

    Good Luck.
