When I attempt to export to LandXML I get an error message that reads
"Export LandXML is currently not supporting the following drawing units:
    Millimeters, Centimeters, Decimeters, Inches."

And it won't let me export. How can I get around this? What do I need to correct in my drawing to export to LandXML?
I have even tried just exporting the single surface that I want to export, but get the same error message.

    Thanks

I guess that the corridor wouldn't be dynamic if it could be imported via XML as the assemblies would not be exported in the XML file but what is the point of having the export option in the first place??

I don't often have them that big. I had to do a comparison of elevations

I have an existing pipe network created with an associated surface and alignment. I now have to edit all the inverts. Since there over 700 structures in the drawing i started looking for a way to get the data into excel and back again.
i exported my pipe network to xml and then opened it in excel. Since i have my invert info already in excel i use the vlookup command to quickly update all the inverts. When i finished i could only save as an "xml spreadsheet". when i tried to import the xml back into Civil 3d, it was invalid.

I didn't think i'd have a problem because no formatting was changed within the document.
Does anybody know how i can get the spreadsheet xml back to the original land xml state?

    Thanks,

The webcast highlights how to integrate your design with your c3d model and i will probably use those features in the future but both storm cad and hydraflow don't make it easier to enter mass amounts of existing data.

Also, I understand now that you can map xml data with excel but if you can't get it back into Civil 3D then, for the task that i am currently working on, it doesn't help.

Can you confirm that for entering basic pipe properties, the fastest way to do so is still the pipe network editor in civil 3d?

DB:3.70:Re: How To Read Write Xml Elements Into Autocad 31

You don't have to post a sample file. The answer to your questions are all "yes", but you seem to be confusing XML files with applications/code or APIs that read and write XML files.

There is no existing application; code; or API that you can use, that is going to magically transform AutoCAD entities into XML, or the inverse. You must write the code that does that.

XML is just a file format. It's a tool programmers use to store data in a persistable/remotable form. That's all XML is. What you do with it is up to you, and anything you do with it requires you to be familiar with the XML format; how to design a schemas and transforms; how to read and write XML files from code, and so on.

LandXML is just a file format/schema that allows applications to write data in a form that other LandXML-enabled applications can read. LandXML, or the .XML file that contains LandXML data is not what does the actual work of reading data of AutoCAD or Civil3D objects and writing them to the XML stream. That is done by a lot of code in Civil3D.

And similarly, if you invent "JCoonsXML", that contains whatever information you want to store there, you must also write the code that reads and writes that data. IOW, an "XML file" does not do all of that for you, and there is no existing code/API that can do that for you either.

DB:3.38:Re: Building Surfaces From Corridors? Read This! f9

If you do any subdivision work, you've already run into the fact that
Corridor surfaces do not link up to the C3D surfaces that they export.
Here's a work around that will allow you to include a corridor surface as
part of your proposed surface, and have it update as needed.

    1. Create your corridor and generate a surface as you'd like it.
    2. Export that out to a C3D surface.
    3. DO NOT edit this surface. You want this to be the exact surface that was
exported. You'll notice this surface is built by nothing but a series of
"Add Point..." edits, so don't even go looking for the breaklines.
    4. Export the C3D surface to an XML file. Don't export anything BUT the
surface! Call it Corridor.XML for simplicity.
    5. Delete the corridor's C3D surface.
    6. Go to General and Import LandXML and import Corridor.XML into a new
    surface.
    7. Rename the imported surface, i.e. PG. Notice that PG is made of an Import
XML operation and a snapshot. That's it!
    8. Add to that surface using breaklines, feature lines, points, pastes, etc.
    9. Build your surface. You now have a surface built from corridor, points,
    pads, etc.
    10. If your corridor changes, simply reexport the corridor's surface to
C3D, and reexport that surface to the XML file. Rename the XML file that's
there, and use the same name. It's important!
    11. Rebuild your PG surface. Because the first step in the build operation
of the PG surface is to import the Corridor.XML file, you will now have an
updated corridor underneath it all, and your points, pads, breaklines,
borders etc will all still be in place, in the correct build order.

Thanks a TON to the Desker that helped me out on this. I don't want to name
him since he'll be hammered with e-mails for more help.

Its been fixed, because now the corridor surface is added to the list of surfaces and is available to be pasted into another surface. The corridor surface updates automatically into the other surface eliminating the need to do what was described.

    Add $ORACLE_HOME/bin to your PATH.

Also, all of the stuff about creating a password file, creating your directories, etc. will be baked into the scripts that you can generate out of dbca. My recommendation would be to fire up dbca, choose 'custom database', work through all of the dialog windows, and at the end you will be given choices of 'create database', 'create template', and/or 'create script'. Choose only create script, note where the scripts are saved. You should have a script called sid.sh where sid is the name you gave for the database. You can execute that script and it will do everything needed to create your database.

The reason I recommend that procedure is that it will give you the most control over the various choices, and at the end will produce a collection of scripts you can study, learn from, and modify if you find that the choices you made produced results different from what you expected.

And as others pointed out, the whole concept of creating a service (as in Windows) does not exist in nix. The password utility is not* the unix equivelent. That utility also exists in windows, but you probably never saw it because it gets hidden by all the GUI point'n'click.

    1. Don't put it all in one drawing. Use the Project setup, and use shortcuts
for alignments and surfaces. Use LandXML to handle your corridor and
    grading.
    2. If someone might xref it, use object styles by layer. If not, go with
object styles by entity. Examples-Surfaces, go by layer so that the archie
can change the color for the contours you send without blowing up the
surface. Profiles, go by entity so that you can shorten your layer list and
    make management easier.
    3. Save early, save often.
    4. Put a white board by your desk, and write down every new style you make,
with the drawing name that you made it in. You need to harvest these things!
    5. Tweak when you can, don't start from scratch.
    6. When using grading groups, delete the group after you make a detached
surface for adding into your final surfaces.
    7. Don't use a point to label something. Use a label!
    8. Breathe. Illegitimis non carborundum.

All right, I know there are some others out there that have done this, what
do you have on your list?

To add to that, turn off anything you don't need to see while you're
working, such as surface contours, tables, parcel labels. Every little bit
helps. This is also where shortcuts come in handy - your production
drawings will look one way while your working drawings look different.

A few weeks ago there was a webcast about best practices - give'r a look!

    Hi Brian,

If I understand, you are saying there are only the three default options
under the Settings Tab / Legals / Phrasing Files. You want to create new
phrasing files and add them to the settings. The key is that the report
generator is all scripts: html, xml, and xsl. It is all open code. I do
    not
know if this is what AutoDesk had in mind as the kosher method of adding
phrasing files, but it should work.

    1) Copy GeneralLegalPhrasings.xml to a new name : XXPhrasings.xml.

    2) Edit the phrases in XXPhrasings.xml.

    3) Find the /support/ReportGenSettings.xml file. Open it in NotePad.

    4) Search for TxDOT, you will find something like this:

    GeneralLegalPhrasings.xml
    TxDOTLegalPhrasings.xml
    FDOTLegalPhrasings.xml

    5) Add your XXPhrasings.xml line like this:

    GeneralLegalPhrasings.xml
    TxDOTLegalPhrasings.xml
    FDOTLegalPhrasings.xml
    XXPhrasings.xml

    6) Save the file.

Going back to the Report Generator, you should be able to open the xml,
    set
the form, and under the settings tab, legals, phrasing file, you should
    now
see 4 items, including the XXPhrasings.xml. The Legal Output should now
    use
that phrasing file for the report. I would think you could add as many
different phrasing files as you wish.

    Hi all,

I have been outputting surfaces from Civil 3D 2012 using the LandXML export function. Some of the XML files that are outputthedata is onasingle line and someof theoutputs are on multiple lines.

Not a major issue as they both import back into C3D ok but within my office we edit the XML file slightly inorder to get it into another software package and require the multi line format.

Does anyone know why this happens? The only difference I can see is the size of the data used to create the surface!

All drawings have the same LandXML export settings

All surfaces have been created using a combination of point groups, breaklines etc..

    Cheers!

DB:3.07:Re: Different Landxml Format Outputs - Multiline And Single Line? af

    Hi Adam,

The single line XML example file you have uploaded depicts a break line and not the surface point details.

The Multiline XML example file you have uploaded depicts the surface point details.

Please note that the the Breaklines if large (with a number of vertices will come as one entity running into many lines)

The surface however will will come in multiple lines as each point is unique within the

surface. (As shown in the screenshot)

I used your drawing to export the surface to LandXML and the surface showed up in single lines.

If you scroll to the point in the LandXML output where the surface begins, you must notice multilines for surface

    depiction. Please confirm.

Anyone have any experience sharing C3D drawings with other companies?

We finally got our first project completed by others in C3D. Judging from the lack of messages when opening their files, I'm guessing that the files were created (or at least last-used) in C3D 2008.

Except of course, the drawing that we got from them has none of our styles in it, so it is difficult for us to work in. And as is historically the case with Autocad drawings, we don't want to work directly in their drawings in any case.

Not to mention, they did everything in one file, so we have this huge giant file that is designed to create a 33-page plan set. We don't want all that overhead in the drawing we are using for construction calcs.

So we are trying to extract just the data we want into a new drawing. What we REALLY want to do is create a new drawing and use Map for this, but that doesn't work. I tried it, and there were horrendous errors everywhere before C3D unceremoniously crashed.

I also tried selecting the items I was interested in, and using COPY TO CLIPBOARD. This works fine for stuff I create, but not with this drawing. The copy operation acts like it works, but then when I try to paste the data into a new drawing, nothing happens. No error messages or anything - just an immediate return to the command prompt.

LandXML export/import is also a very undesireable option. There are some 30 alignments spread over six Sites, and in order to keep them in separate Sites, I apparently must export every Site separately. And of course, LandXML does not export any of the annotations or labels, which are very important.

Luckily, it looks like they did everything in one drawing, so there don't seem to be any Vault-created issues. But unfortunately, they did everything in one drawing, so the drawing is a giant mess. Therefore I don't simply want to insert their entire drawing into a new drawing created from our template.

I'm thinking I may get somewhere by taking their drawing, and trying to delete everything I'm not really interested in. Then, when I have done that, try to insert whatever is left into a new drawing created from our template.

But this whole process is striking me as being a complete mess. Anyone else dealt with it yet?

I haven't been messing with Copy/clip in a while because of the limitations
as well. I do recall a sage warning us to track dependencies with copy/clip.

I just tried this to confirm.

Alignments first. Only alignments. They come over pretty nice.

If you have a tough time with one, in the source, offset it 5' one way
then 5' back, copy-clip into the new dwg convert to alignment.

Profile views next. When I copy the profile view paste into the new dwg,
low behold, the EG tin comes for the ride. My FG came for the ride as well
but does not display. The FG was all Feature lines and they came across in
the copy as well so I could easily rebuild the surface.

I have not gone further the pipe networks stuff but Copy/Clip can work
    with some things.

By no means is this a cure all but it may help.

Nothing official here just my "Thoughts"

Civil 3D (C3D) is a Stand Alone application that does MOST of what Land
Desktop (LDt) and Civil Design do. What is does do, it does much better.

While people learn C3D they may still be using LDt along side it in order to
    accomplish what they want.

Both LDt and C3D can import data directly from the other. LandXML is another
viable alternative. But would require the extra step of creating the XML
    file.

LDt will "likely" never go away completely. I say this because in the
mechanical field ADSK created Inventor (Now on version 10), but MDt still
exists. LDt will not be enhanced other than it will be on the latest
    AutoCAD.

Civil Design still exist because of the use of LDt. If and when most users
are creating profiles, cross sections, and grading with C3D then maybe...

Sheet Manager is not a critical item for "most" LDt users. With STYLES now
labeling Civil 3d objects, Sheet Manager may not be as necessary for its
    users.

DB:2.93:Re: Landxml From Data, Need Help! kf

I apologize but I am not clear on your intended purpose for linking the
files. If your traditional work process includes creating
discipline-specific drawings to be later referenced into a single base
drawing then the answer is, yes. Many companies create sanitary, storm, and
water layouts on individual drawings that are later referenced into a single
    base drawing.

If your intent is simply to better manage the project design data by keeping
it in separate drawings you might instead consider taking advantage of
project management in Civil 3D. As you may be aware, much of the design data
can be saved to a project and accessed by multiple users. (Personally, I
think the Civil 3D project concept is weak at this point in its development.
Land Desktop project management is admittedly bloated but it is effective
    and certainly more inconspicuous.)

For large projects, I have heard recommendations for a combination of both
methods - creating design data by drawing AND writing it to the project.
Generally, I prefer my design data in a single base drawing.

This srtm data is in geotiff format. It loads ok into conversion software called 3DEM and GlobalMapper but the .dem and .ter files they export fail to load into Dreamscape Terra Editor. Import of .dem files crashes max and import of .ter files says "invalid terragan format". By default, C3D will now create polylines from the breaklines defined in
your LandXML file. These are not necessary (they are not used in the
surface definition) and may be slowing down your import. Try this:

Go to Edit LandXML Settings (rt-click menu off the drawing from the settings
    tab in toolspace).
On the Import tab under Surface Import Settings, turn off "Create Sourcedata
    in Drawing".

Let me know if that helps.

I did get it into LDT (note the supplemental post). You make a good point
about C3D having to generate the graphics, but that should not add a
significant amount of time to the import unless it were trying to generate
the triangles one at a time, which I doubt. More likely the data is compiled
and then the graphics are generated which should be relatively quick. The
TIN consists of almost 76k triangles, 38k points, 447 breaklines and covers
an area of about 300 acres. I wouldn't consider this to be an
extraordinarily large dataset. I guess it is just the way LDT C3D work. It
is frustrating when my other app. can do it in 5 seconds.

A Surface import into Civil 3d is creating drawing object information
    necessary to display that surface.

I would expect difference between them.

Were you sucessful in importing into Land? If so try importing it directly
from the Land Desktop Project to see if it makes a difference.

An 8 MB XML file seems like a pretty large surface with lots of points and
    triangles.

DB:2.74:Re: Best Way To Import Ldt Alignments mm

The alignment should have something under it...Like Mike's Road or Street One... if there is nothing "under" alignment - its not available.

If you have the "CAD file" of the linework - don't bother with the import - extend your PVI's and retrace with Civil 3d tools.
Opening in LDT - have you checked the alignment database inside - or optionally - check the projects align directory and be sure there are files for your street.

of the parts. Most I do have 100s of part in the IDW and I have no issues.
Scratch that most of the time I have no issues. I would almost pin it on
saving it straight to the server. Most of the time I put it local then copy
over to server. And that is when I have issues. I started to log what I do
if it happens more then one time so the next time it happens I will tell you
more. This was more to show there are issues with the export to dwg. And
there are more then this but most have to do with the text moving around and
    changing sizes.

Oh no it was not an open session for long time. Fact of the matter I just

I am not sure what the issue is, or if it even CAD related, but here goes. On Tuesday I was using the LandXML export to XML pipes in Civil 3D 2008 and importing them into Hydroflow 2005. Today, I do the exact same thing and hydro flow can't process the XML. I tried using an older version of the drawing to export, thinking maybe I did something in CAD to cause the error, but that didn't help. Our company did install a timesheet program and I though maybe this did something,
but a system restore didn't help either. All I know is it worked
Tuesday and now it doesn't. Any ideas...

DB:2.62:Re: Landxml Export To Hydroflow 99

It seems that there is a giant gap in workflow when going between Hydroflow
Storm Sewers and any cad program. I use all of the default settings for
pipes and inlet structures when possible and that eliminates a lot of data
entry. The problem to me is when revisions begin. I use up a so much time
editing between programs and am always concerned that all the data entry
between programs during revisions will result in some human error. For
example, in our most recent project we have 170 structures and pipes and if
more than 10% changes it seems easier (and more accurate) to re-xml the pipe
network and fill in the blanks again rather that go through and recheck all
    of the data by eye.

I'd like to have anyone's opinion on their experiences with Hydraflow
software and any other developers of stormwater design software.

I followed those instructions for the software removal and folder and registry deletions, but it didn't solve the problem. I was never asked whether or not to uninstall shared components...maybe because of the way it was originally installed?

Anyhow, after registry searches I found the problem and a fix...so far.

The Land Type Library 4.0 is registered under its old path, "C:\Program Files\Land Desktop 2004\landauto.tlb". I searched for all registry entries with the old type library name "landauto.tlb" and modified their path to the new location, "C:\Program Files\Autodesk Land Desktop 2006\landauto46.tlb".

After making this change I was able to use our 3rd party applications that need access to the Land API, and LandXML importing and exporting.

Hi all. I have this very simple grading it's just a small containment grade to surface. As simple as it gets. And it keeps crashing on me constantly as I adjust the grips in the grading, to make it fit the volume required.

As I said, it's an extremely simple drawing, and I've done far more complex gradings with far less issues. I can't figure out why this is crashing so frequently. I will attach the file, to see if others can replicate my issue, or better yet .. solve my problem.

I think the problem could be in the makeup of the existing surface. Just some things I've noticed. I once tried to isolate the surface, by exporting to landxml, and it took quite a while to calculate, in the past, when I've done it was almost instant.

Does anyone have any ideas? If you are testing the file, just try to grip and move the grading a few times. It seems to have particular trouble with corners, move one fine, move the other, crash. Sometimes I can get them to work, but this is a really simply grading, it shouldn't be crashing !!!

However, when I use the Import LandXML routine it fails with the message "Run Time Error '429'. ActiveX component can't create object". From what I've found it seems I need to register a DLL to get past this but I don't know which one.

Can anyone offer a solution? This may occur with other apps once I start using them more fully so it would be helpful to know how to determine which dll's/components need to be registered.

Glad you got it up and running. Sorry that you had the need to do so. The only reason I set mine up is to support our surveyor who refuses to move out of the R14/S8 days. Before I send him anything I have to be sure to open it in LDT3 and check for "conatins objects from a newer version" errors, as he's incapabale of doing so himself. He did figure out how to open and convert the R2000 format to a R14 dwg file though. So I don't plot or directly work on drawings in that setup.

If you have planty of RAM, try just leaving the XPMode PC running and minimized when not needed. With those older drawings, you shouldn't need to dedicate too much RAM to it.

The surface looks fine on the screen, but when it is exported to LandXML the boundary is ignored, This creates a 120MB XML file, which will not load into Windes for Drainage work.

I can trim the breaklines defining each surfaces, but there is 8 models and 8 different areas to trim in this manor. This would take far too long and would also create 64 surfaces!!!

If the time stamp is required, Oracle will receive the 00:00:00 as the time information because SQL Dev doesn't produce the time information.

i have had a similar thing happen just last week.
I created a new stormwater network with 2 pipe runs in it.

Then, as always happens in real life, I had to delete a structure and a pipe, change course, add another structure and pipe, alter the underlying alignment to match....and hey presto, one of the structures refuses to draw in the PV.

Doesn't matter what I tried to do to fix it, it refuses to draw.

Anyway, 2 things I did to move on.

    1. Sent the drawing to AutoDESK support (benefit of being on subscription)...they are looking at the difficulties I have had.

    2. started again with the network and tried to create a network thst didn't require any editting...(which of course is NOT the final answer, but a method that enables me to continue.)

    Hi Folks

I have had decent success getting Civil 3D dwgs into Microstation with
    Inroads.

However, there is always work to be done with hatches, linetypes, text

Here is what I am currently doing:

Export LandXML of entire Civil 3D dwg/project
    Export Civil 3D.dwg to Acad.dwg
    Cleanup Acad.dwg
Run layer translator that we made (changes NCS layer names into the local
    DOT level numbers/colors)
    Export through Maptoolsexport to .dgn

    Open .dgn in InRoads/Microstation
    Import LandXML

Then, the Microstation people have, say 85% useable information. But they
    need a lot of cleanup

Does anyone have a customization to assist with this?

My goal is that my clients that work with DOTs will be able to do most, if
not all, of their design in C3D. Then, we will have a great way to get
things looking right in Bentley without much pain. They will always want to
open in Microstation for the final prep and check, but I want to make it
    easy.

And all of this is just model space- the design in this case is the only
thing that matters (not sheets.layouts, etc)

I will pay in money or fresh vegetables.

can anyone please give me some suggestions on bringing a C3D TIN into InRoads? I tried:

    1. the Landxml route, but the triangulation at quite a few places come out different (swapped edges).

    2. extracted the TIN edges and used them to recreate in InRoads, still the triangulation is different.

i read up online about swapping edges in C3D then exporting, my area is a few miles long. swapping edges would be extremely time confusing and not feasible.

You are right about it being quiet, but there is one very active member I know that is very knowledgeable about C3D and InRoads and will likely respond.

what happened to export to 3ds? Am I missing something?

    DB:2.53:Re: Export To 3ds? sz

    Hi Alex,

I say that "I can no longer export my 3D faces from AutoCAD" because the only other non-proprietary file format is DXF. DXF is limited in the number of faces it can hold before the file size 'explodes' and becomes unusable. DXF is also limited to 65K. How do I export a 450mb DWG of 3D faces? At times AutoCAD itself crashes on me because it can't deal with that amount of data.

3DS file size is a fraction of DXF, and can retain a lot more information than DXF can.

I use 3D models from other sources, convert them to 3DS format and import into AutoCAD for usage. I also create TIN models in CAiCE (another AutoDESK product) and export to 3DS from AutoCAD into non AutoDESK software for usage in areas AutoDESK does not market any products in.

You suggest that MAX or VIZ should be used, but it is not viable for me to purchase those programs just for file conversion, especially with "after-tax" dollars.

I suggest that you bring back the 3DS file format, just create a dialog box that pops up every time the command is invoked to remind the user that 3DS is an outdated format and will contain limited information. Then implement the FBX file format in all AutoDESK applications so that 3D data can be ported between most 3D compliant applications. This will allow AutoDESK to complete with 3D applications that cost 1/10th of AutoCAD. (ie - If you got it, use it)

AutoDESK has given AutoCAD the ability to model in 3D easily with version 2007. Now give us, the users, the ability to use those models. Otherwise, I'll wind up using programs like Hexagon, Carrara, Amapi, Silo, Wings3D and others to do the modeling I need because I will not be able to export any models built with AutoCAD into the environment that is my workflow.

BTW - If you want me to FTP to you my AutoCAD drawing of 3D faces that crashes AutoCAD, just let me know. I'd love it if AutoDESK fixed the memory limitations within AutoCAD.

After analyzing a storm system in SSA or Storm Sewers I’m exporting it to a .stm file. When importing to CAD it recognizes the existing pipe network and asks to update it which works but it adds two horizontal purple lines in the profile which are attached to one of the pipes in the profile. If you erase the purple lines it erases the pipe with it.

Things I tried already with no success:

    -Erase profile and re-create it

    -Erase alignment and re-create it

-Erase all pipes before import (so it would import as new, not update)

-Try LandXML for export/import (this wouldn’t update pipes, it just brought in a whole new network and messed up all the styles/parts)

Here is what it looks like:

FYI, I'm pretty new to C3D and autocad in general so throw me any dumb mistake you can think of. I'm really new to storm design in C3D as I've still been using our old software (Terramodel) as a crutch.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Does anyone have or can anyone please create / explain how to modify the Corridor Slope Stake Report to include Eastings, Northings and Bearings for each reported point.

I have been asking for this since I started on R2005 because the current boxed reports just are not feasible for site use and so we are still having to do this using exported 3D strings and annother 3rd party application.

As you can imagine my bosses are getting impatient after waiting after 4 releases and still not being able to use this function, so much so that they are considering a software change ((not good)).

I have had several attempts to add this information to the reports but I can't see how to do it through customisation.

I have tried using the points to offset but this does not include the cogo point names and so is very unhelpful. ~ Someone must have seen red and modded the out of the box reports by now : )

DB:2.53:Re: Landxml Reports - Custom Corridor With E, N Bearings. az

I'm attaching a zip with the modified DVB. I have marked all (I think) of
the changes/deletions/additions I made. MOst were in the DataExtractor
Module, but there were a few in the ReportWriter module.

To get the E/N coordinates, it is really quite simple once you get familiar
with the Object Model (which could take a while!). First I added a variant:
    Dim xyz as Variant

Since the code was already getting the StationOffsetElevation from the
Baseline into the vx variable, I just passed that to the Baseline's
    StationOffsetElevationtoXYZ method:

    vx = oPoint.GetStationOffsetElevationToBaseline
    xyz = oBaseline.StationOffsetElevationToXYZ(vx) ''added by
    JM

then modified the code to omit the Slope between points and include the XY
data. It should be fairly easy to follow what changes I made in the code. To
include the bearings, you will need to do some extra work to save the
previous XY data and add another line to the output. If you need some help
with that, just ask. But make sure to specify what that bearing is
between....I think it's between the point codes, but your initial post
showing the sample output has varying bearings, not sure how that can
be....wouldn't each sample line have a consistent bearing between all
points? Maybe adding 1 bearing to the section header showing the direction
    of the Section would suffice?

    "mikeevans" wrote in message news:5991715@discussion.autodesk.com...
I don't think that the bearing is really that important but would be a good
    check on site.

That is closer to what we need. Can I ask how on earth you managed to
extract the coordinates into the file, I tried for ages and couldn't seem to
do it or see how it was done.

    Regards
    Mike.

As promised, I've attached some images here showing why I would rather
not have WMF files (or anything else for that matter) filtered through
DWG output. I will state though that they have made some improvements,
and perhaps one day they will get to a point where the output is flawless.
These examples may seem frivolous to some, but they do detract from the
    final output.

    To summarize the images:
    1. IVPLOT and ACADPLOT show the general overall view of the
original and autocad versions of the files (no cleanup on the acad).
As you can see, there is a large curve projected from the ISO view
that should not even be there. Also, when a reference object is displayed
in a view with tangent edges, the autocad translation WRONGLY
puts the reference objects tangent edges into a tangent_edges layer,
which makes the tangent edges not displayed the same as the rest of
the object (I use a blue phantom line color for all my reference objects,
but in acad, all the internal tangent edges turn back to black.

    2. MISMATCH1: The tolerance on the diameter dimension is missing the plus
symbol AND the text justification of the entire text has shifted to CENTERED
when it was originally LEFT justified.

    3. MISMATCH2: The tolerance values are not lined up properly and again we
    have the same justification issue.

There may be more issues similar to this, but these are the ones I have run across.

Actually, the latest posting I was reffering to was dated 12/3/2004

I thought this was the same thread, I guess I was wrong. But the
Feb 2004 posting did contain the more detailed setup description, if
    I remember correctly.

I already had ghostscript and the related tools installed and setup
when I created a TIFF printer for IV to use, so it was fairly
easy to setup the WMF printer initially, once I was able to
remember that I had to use the Redmon port config that
PDFCreator used when it was installed. But I think more testing
is in order to figure out the most desirable settings used in the
    translation to wmf output.

I still think avoiding autocad output is a better goal though. I planned
on posting some comparisons of how AutoCAD output munges the
display later (compared to the original idw, not wmf at this point)

P.S. I have just downloaded the dwf 6 toolkit, but I see they do not provide
precompiled dlls. Guess I will have to get more than VB6 if I am going
    to do anything with that.

Thanks, I suppose the big question is, is anybody interested. I was looking for a simple way. Setting up Ghostscript and
capturing a printer port takes a bit of work but is something I have worked with before. Same with running GhostScript from
    code.
I would think the most elegant would be going from DWF but that would require significant coding via the DWF SDK. I found you
posting dated Feb 2, 2004 that describes use of pstoedit etc. I would assume that is what you were referring to.

    Thanks Heidi

    DB:2.49:Re: Export Landxml pp

    Hi,

    1) I am assuming this is a project specific problem - even though you did
say 'any'. Trying opening the landXML export for a very small or sample
project. Does it work? If so, keep reading 2 - 6; if not, you must have
some specific hardware/software conflicts - possible some .dll problems.
Maybe some faulty memeory chips? If it was a corrupt configuration or path,
the Repair should fix it. Make sure you are logged on as an administrator.
    Contact your Dealer.

    2) If the problem is project specific, I am guessing that you have either a
very large project, or large surface(s) within the project.

    3) The Interface LDT LandXML Export routine is not at all user friendly -
the programmers decided to identify all available LDT land data prior, then
letting the user select from the list. The algorithm is very memory and time
    intensive.

    4) Try reducing the specific project data for the large project. For
example, I have a project called Transfer. If I want to just landXML Export
a particular surface from a given project, I will copy the DTM/Surface
folder to my Transfer project, landXML Export it, then delete the folder,
keeping the Transfer project 'clean.' Same can be done for parcels,
    alignments and points.

    5) If the problem is a single, large DTM, in a particular project, you may
be out of luck. Remember, if you need to re-import into LDT, the time will
    increase geometrically.

    6) If you have C3D, you might find better interface times with landXML
    operations.

    Good luck,

    sc

I'm trying to move a surface from a corupted dwg (every time I go to surface properties it crashes) to a new one. But I still want the ablity to edit things if I need to... export landxml won't work becuase it creates a snapshot.

moving points and point groups works fine with landxml. And I can drag and drop all my styles from the old drawing... but I'd rather not rebuild all my break line defs if I don't have to (I've got lots of walls buildings and roads, it would take some time).

why would there be an option to import a txt file if there was no way to export to a txt file. The help file gives a guide to building defs in a text file, why anyone would want to do that I don't know.

There is an option in the import settings to bring in the source data, back

The bad news is that you will not get the original feature lines, only

when you export the surface to LandXML, it actually DOES export the

It's been something I've been mightily confused about, but haven't taken the

This is for exporting from one database to another database without going through the intermediate file. It will NOT create an export file. It will NOT create a file on the client. It does NOT answer the OP's questionNot sure if you have this right or not. If you execute expdp with a network link, the result is a dump file on the server that you execute the expdp command from. The information stored in the dumpfile comes from the database pointed to by the network link, but a dump file will be generated.

This is different then running an import command from a network link. I this case, the result is the source information imported into the target database.

From the comment above, to me, it implies that you can't generate a dumpfile when a network link is supplied, this is not true.

Well I have a LandXML and I import the file into the SDB, it gives me line work but only Station Setups. I have no turned angles or points short of the Occupation Points. What is going on here. I have tested this in C3D12 on one PC C3D13 14 on another PC and have the same issue. However a co-worker imports to a student version of 12 using my template and gets points and lines.

What could I be missing - is there some setting in the drawing or database that I'm missing? Any help would be aq

DB:2.47:Re: Land Xml Import - Survey Database xk

I see now, my co-worker must have done the same thing.

This is a BUG with the survey database import routine. I have tried 3 different versions of C3D from 2012-2014 and none of them will import the points and the linework to the SDB.

I am trying to use the linework codesets so that the linework will come into the drawing appropriately as figures. Which does come in as expected and looks great. But now this makes for a 4 step process.

How can I go to the VP/Surveyor/co-workers and say this works but you have to do it like this or it doesn't.

    A. Import Parcels/Figures to the SDB

    B. Import Cogo Points (ONLY) using the insert xml command to drawing

C D. Go Back to the SDB and Import the Points from the drawing to SDB but DONT process linework.

And then to top it all off, you can not edit the survey figures properties to make adjustments to the linework which was fixed for ascii import but I have not been able to edit figures that our created by FBK files and now XML files.

Can one sample sections without a alignment? If you remember, LDD 2004 would allow you to define a site, create a stratum and sample M (x) or N (y) grids? (no these are not functions but directions) Is this not possible in Civil 3D? I exported my surface, via LandXML, and ran the numbers on a stratum to get a adjusted report.

DB:2.47:Re: To Bind Or Not To Bind! Units? Xrefs? Explode? - Civil 3d 2008 Sp2 73

I still can't bind and explode my xrefs. There's always some struggle to get anything to bind and explode in 2008. I must bind my xref because there is some crazy coordinate bug. What happens is that the coordinates of the site were originally in the 11,000,000,6,000,000 (x,y). Then one day the coordinates start reporting in the hundreds. Nothing was moved. What's crazy is that I attach this problem file to another xref that is reporting the correct coordinates and it overlays my site perfectly, but not xrefing the other way around!

So I've fixed these coordinate file problems in the past by starting a fresh new template file, bind the offending file, and wahlah, the coordinates are back to normal for the rest of the project. This seems to work best when there aren't many "intelligent" objects in the drawing. This particular xref started exhibiting the coordinate problem after most of the design has been done and now there are many "intelligent" objects. I can bind-insert just fine, but when I explode the resulting block, my machine just locks up. I got on a faster machine with more memory and was able to see it attempting to recalculate my grading objects before it locked up, so I know it's the more complex "intelligent" objects that are hanging it up the explode block command. Why?

Such a simple operation as bind and explode should not be so complicated. Of course I have so many "intelligent" objects built off of other "intelligent" objects that everything (surfaces, grading groups, sites, etc.) would break if I were to copy-paste them or do a LandXML export-import for the dynamic objects and copied over the manual drafting. It's always this way on every project. I get wrapped around the axle of using "intelligent" dynamic objects, like Civil 3D marketing says I'm supposed to. Instead I'm just building ever higher platforms of complexity that crescendo into one great big CRASH the day before the project is due to the client. I grow weary of Civil 3D.

PS- Tried attaching the trouble file, but the forum just gives me the message "The content type of the file 'file.dwg' is not allowed." So much for help with DWGs. Hope it's temporary system glitch.

I´m very satisfied when it works, but sometimes for no reason it´s just fails exporting anything

Since IM does the best FBX import/export I ever seen when it works, I wonder why this happens?, the same terrain exports perfect if no geolocated satelite image (it´s all correctly aligned in IM) reason I want´t it so badly to export with the terrain.

It´s a 46mb hires geotiff, and terrain is a 2,5 mb 5m geotiff, I tried with a 1m 70mb also, if there was lack of info in the small one.

This is a brilliant tool, if can be better documented, and consistant when export for Vizwork..

It even has me floored with the roadtools, and wonderful import of Landxml for sites, would be even better if simple sitetools was around like the great roadtools.

So driveways would join up with a site if sloped, so on.

Most of all this is a great tool as it is, but can always get better.

    DB:2.47:Re: Fbx Export ! z1

I ve got a shapefile with building footprints and a height attribute. I extruded the buildings using this height attribute in AIM. Works fine. Now I'd like to export my model to ArcGIS.

Since AIM unfortunately only knows the fbx export format, I have to use Autocad Map 3D or Civil 3D for the conversion to 3ds or dae or 3dshp or whatever. Unfortunately, the export from AIM to Autocad Map3D does not work at all. The buildings are appearing, but the Coordinate system gets lost after FBX imnport in Autocad and the model is somehow damaged - I am not able to measure the objects. When I try to export to 3D Shapefile, it always filteres all my objects, so the export would turn out empty.

This is a pity - AIM seems to be a very intuitive program, but its limited export capabilities and the errors and detours via Civil or Autocad Map 3d make it impossible for me to export my model.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your help

Civil 3D 2009. Is there anyway to switch display modes of Alignment curve PI's? At our firm the drawing standard is always to draw extension lines and PI's at Alignment curves. We have already informed users that they may not convert a polyline to a Alignment as this function does not appear to support our drawing standard (extension lines and PI's not included at curves). The other problem is in the Alignment LandXML transfer. After we have created an Alignment using the Layout method. If that Alignment is exported to LandXML, then imported into another drawing, the resulting Alignment imported does not have extension lines and PI's at curves. I hope there is a simple button I have unchecked somewhere - yes?

    Thanks,

    Kevin.

    DB:2.46:Re: Alignment Curve Pi's 3a

    Well, that's the problem...

That does not work if you create the Alignment from a polyline, or if you create the Alignment from LandXML import.

The routine in the Sincpac-C3D will create an Alignment with the extensions from a polyline, but it won't help with the LandXML part of the problem.

I already own 3d studio max, and Maya, and it seems neither can resolve my current issue. I have a peice of geographical terrain mesh that I've imported in from 3d studio max. its a fairly high polygon count, about 2.2 million. I'm trying to see if Civil 3d will do what I need. as far as I can tell, it will, but I haven't used autocad of any kind since about 1995. Things have obviously changed.

First problem is the mesh seems to have come in Y up instead of Z up, but thats not a dealbreaker although it'd be better if it didn't.

second is all the edges between vertices seem to have been bezied, or curved at the very least. The mesh is extremely unrespnsive even though it works fine in Max. again, this may be not too big a deal.

third, if posible, I need to create a point cloud from this, then export it to LandXML. I'm only using a trial version of civil 3d at the moment cause I need to see if it will actually do this or not before plunking down the money, and buying it would take like 5 weeks of beauracracy to get through. I've looked at the help files and I'm not finding the point cloud options where they say and exporting to LandXML doesn't seem like a quick file/export kind of option. And I can't find that where it says in the help file either..

I'm fully ready to call myself ignorant on all this, cause I am. My end result is to get this into 3d Analyst in ArcMap. Trying to figure out all the steps hasn't been easy. If someone could at least say its possible, that would be nice. If someone could say yes, its possible with what you have, and here is more or less how, that would be fantastic.

    thanks to all

DB:2.46:Re: Exporting Terrain Mesh Into Landxml, Possibly As A Point Cloud 8p

What are the objects created when the mesh is exploded? Hopefully either a 3DFace or a Polyface, as these are the 2 that can be used to define the surface.

Providing you have one of those, on the Create Ground Data Panel, select Surfaces, then choose Create Surface. Give it a name and a style to display, hit OK. On the Prospector, find the Surface you just created, expand the tree until you see the Definition branch, right-click on the Drawing Objects, then change the drop down list to display the 3d object type. Select the objects.

The structure pipe labels imported from the 3d export, but not from the LDD export.

To avoid having to say that pipe 26 = 6A7 etc, I tried importing the LDD files into 3d. When I did that, the structure labels also vanished and were incrementally labeled by 3d.

I'm simply trying to figure out how to export legal descriptions in the first place. It seems that there are some commercial products (ex. MapWorks Legals) but how do you create text based on linework or parcels in the first place?

For example, you have a line, or a series of polylines, and you want to label it something like what you said:
    THENCE SOUTH 40024 EAST, 114.36 FEET;

    THENCE NORTHEASTERLY ALONG A CURVE CONCAVE NORTHERLY WHOSE RADIUS IS 41.18 FEET, WHOSE ARC LENGTH IS 177.21 FEET AND WHOSE CHORD BEARS NORTH 164237 EAST , 68.84 FEET;
How did you even get that much?

No. I don't program VBA. I'm a relative n00b to stuff like that.

    Keyphrases:
export legals create legals legal descriptions linework lines polylines create text descriptions
