    DB:3.20:Pix Firewall Sqlnet Inspection cj

    Hi everyone,

I hope someone with extensive experiences with Cisco Pix/ASA can tell me

what the purpose of this command:

    fixup protocol sqlnet 1521-1526

    fixup protocol http 80

    policy-map global_policy

    class class_sqlnet

    inspect sqlnet

    inspect http

I have rule on the firewall as follows:

    policy-map global_policy

    class class_sqlnet

    inspect sqlnet

access-list test permit tcp any any range 1521-1526 log

    access-group test interface outside

Behind the firewall is a bunch of Oracle database servers version 9i, 10g and 11g.

I use an Oracle utility called Oracle loader to load about 40GB of data into these

oracle databases. These jobs hang after loading about 20GB of data into the databases.

The only way to load 40GB of data into the database is to "no fixup protocol sqlnet 1521-1526".

    My question is this:

What are the advantages of enabling sqlnet inspection on the firewall? From what I've

seen so far, it does nothing but cause trouble for my sqlnet traffics especially loading

massive amount of data into the database. What does sqlnet inspection actually do?

Are there any security risks in disabling sqlnet inspection? Thanks.

    DB:3.20:Pix Firewall Sqlnet Inspection cj

    David

"Therefore, even with sqlnet inspection enable, it shoud work right?"

Well you would think so but then again i didn't write the inspection code for sql :-)

As far as i know the sqlnet code is there purely to deal with the port number issue so to be honest if it works without it then i would disable it.

DB:3.13:Css Keepalive Script For Sqlnet With Select Query 9c

    Dear,

Title says it alls : has anybody developed a keepalive script which

checks availability of an Oracle DB

    server by connecting and checking

the reply to a specific SQL select

query (the latter enables to determine

whether the server is active or standby

in a Oracle Data Guard set up).

I am also interested in advise about

how difficult/feasible it would be to

write a script for SQLnet myself.

    Regards,

    Patrick

DB:3.13:Css Keepalive Script For Sqlnet With Select Query 9c

Actually it's pretty standard in Oracle terms - RAC at a primary site with a single instance standby database is common.

Personally I'd rather not put a CSS in the way - that's not to say it won't work, just that it might have unexpected side effects (e.g. for failover within the RAC cluster). Plus it won't be a configuration that Oracle has tested.

I suggest you bounce it back to the Oracle DBAs and get them to work it out ;)

Of course if you've got Application Server in there too you'll probably want a CSS (perhaps two/four geographically dispersed) between them and your end users.

Thanks for the quick reply Igor.

I check the rest of my servers and all have that records in syslog file. Also I don´t thnk it is a DDoS attack, see these two lines:

    DB:2.87:Reassembly Limit Exceeded x1

After upgrading a PIX 515 of ours from 7.2 to 8.0 an issue was discovered where large SQL transfers were being dropped.

Troubleshooting the issue I discovered errors in the logs reporting connections on port 1521 (SQLNET) between the servers in question saying "reassembly limit of 8192bytes exceeded"

I found this page relating to the error:

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_tech_note09186a00807c35e7.shtml

And so I disabled SQLNET inspection by using:

    policy-map global_policy

    class inspection_default

    no inspect sqlnet

This corrected the issue however I don't think this is ideal.

Also after doing a line-diff comparison of the config prior to upgrade I realised that SQLNET was being inspected before, so the upgrade has somehow changed something there.

    Any ideas?

    DB:2.87:Reassembly Limit Exceeded x1

Explanation: This message displays when the reassembly buffer limit is exceeded during assembling TCP segments.

source_address/source_port - The source IP address and the source port of the packet initiating the connection.

dest_address/dest_port - The destination IP address and the destination port of the packet initiating the connection.

interface_inside - The name of the interface on which the packet which initiated the connection arrives.

interface_outside - The name of the interface on which the packet which initiated the connection exits.

limit - The configured embryonic connection limit for the traffic class.

The resolution for this issue is to disable the RTSP inspection in the security appliance as shown.

    policy-map global_policy

What version of the sessions.xml/TopLink are you using? In the latest version there is a log-level on the toplink-log (eclipselink-log), if you set the level to fine or lower the SQL will be logged, other it will not be logged. In previous versions turning message logging off (false) would disable logging (although it is off by default). log-debug should be false if you do not want logging.

    Hello,

    1. We have a RHEL 5.3 Linux x86-64 box on the Amazon cloud.
    2. We have a database server (solaris sparc 64 bit 11gR2) in our local data center.
    3. Between the linux box and the database server there are no ports being blocked.
    4. I installed 11gR1 (11.1.0.6) client on the linux box. There were some install pre-reqs that were not executed, however I checked the installactions log and the make.log to ensure there were no major errors.
    5. I then connect from the linux box (11gR1) to the database server 11gR2 (11.2.0.1 it is a Solaris SPARC 64 bit server).

    6. Connecting with SQLPlus is okay, however I am observing a very wierd behavior, immediately after installing the client, the very first time, I pick and run a query "select * from nls_database_parameters", it returns some 20 rows, everything is fine.
    7. next I run a "select * from tablewithblobcolumn" query. This table has a BLOB column, the select displays a few rows may be 30-40 and then the output is stuck, essentially just hangs and I cannot do anything in SQLPlus, CTRL-C or sending a SIGKILL etc none of that works. I have to open another shell and kill the sqlplus session.

    8. The weird thing is that when I install a 11gR1 client on any local (within the firewall) box the select * from tablewithblobcolumn runs just fine. The same query runs properly directly on the database server (using either bequeath or Tnsnames).
    9. I have searched in forums, google, opened a case with oracle support but have not had any luck with this. I even created SQLNET trace on the client and server as oracle support recommended, but no apparent errors come up.

Will really appreciate if someone can provide some insights.

Our developers are having problems with connections they feel need to remain open indefinitely...I know "timeout conn 0" will disable the idle timeout but I am a little weary of the impact this will have on system resources on the firewall as a whole when NO connections are timing out....

    Chris

Apologies for not realising ASA v8.x now has an ability to make an ACE inactive, good to know.

This one however i do know as i have faced the exact same problems with SQL. Prior to v7.x you could only set the timeout globally but now you can do it with the MPF (Modular Policy Framework) so you can use a class map to match specific traffic ie SQL in your case and then use a policy to set a connection timeout for that type of traffic. See the examples section in this link -

    Hi all,

I've got a query that uses a simple connect by function.

When running this on the server and indeed other client apps using the Oracle 9/10 client it works fine.

I try to run the same query with 10g/11g client over .net and I get 3113.

The config I'm currently using is oracle 11.2g client with ODP.NET. The only caveat is that I'm using a VPN connection.

Overall db connectivity is working well, except this query - which does take longer than the others to return data. Could it be a time out in sqlnet? i've tried with/without firewall to eliminate that.. Nothing in the server's (9i) alert.log.

I don't know really what to check next. I'm pretty sure it's not an oracle bug (which i have experienced with complete connect by queries).

    Any pointers?

    Thanks in advance

DB:2.68:Ora03113 - End Of File On Communication Channel. Different Results... ad

Is this behavior specific to ODP? What behavior do you see if you execute the same query via SQLPlus?

Is this behavior consistently reproducible with this query?

Any ora-600 or ora-7445 in the alert log?

Usually for 3113 the best thing to do is open a SR and supply sqlnet traces to Support. 3113 is the general "connection died" error, and sqlnet traces usually help show what/why.

    DB:2.68:Error Updating Linked Table d3

    Hello folks,
I have posted the following issue on the Oracle Forums, but have not got any feedback. I was wondering if perhaps any of you have run into the same issue and could perhaps share some insight with me? Thanks very much!
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Good day folks,
My shop has just moved to 11gR2 client and server. We were previously using 11gR1 with no issues (and before that, 10, 9, 8, etc). After moving from 11r1 to 11r2, we began getting errors from some of our MS Access ODBC applications with linked Oracle tables.
The error would occur when executing an UPDATE statement that had a table join in it. Here is a simple example:

UPDATE tablex SET tablex.fieldx = value
    WHERE tablex.primaryKeyField IN (SELECT tableZ.primaryKeyField from tableZ where (some filter...));

Currently, after moving to 11r2 client, an update query like the one above will error out in one of the following ways:
    - odbc -- update on a linked table failed - Ora 01722 invalid number
    - ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column
    - Or it will say that the records were not updated because they are locked.

In some cases, I have noticed some records being updated that were not supposed to be updated.. records that the where clause was meant to exclude. That is very unsettling.

I understand that perhaps an update statement shouldnt be joining table and perhaps it should be done over a couple calls, but the reality is this code is out there in abundance and if there is a solution that doesnt amount to my changing
all this code or reverting to 11gR1, I would love to find it.

Since the query runs fine using SQL Plus and also runs fine if I run it against a local table in Access rather than a linked Oracle table I figured the issue was possibly with the Oracle 11r2 ODBC driver. So, I switched the Oracle ODBC driver (sqora32.dll
version 11.2.0.1 with version 11.1.0.7), and the problem went away.
I believe this verifies the issue resides with Oracle ODBC version 11.2.0.1. Can anyone help? I'm assuming it's not particularly wise to simply swap sqora32.dll files on all my clients machines, so I am searching for an actual solution here instead.

I also did performed ODBC tracing to see what Access is handing to the Oracle ODBC driver. I then used database or SQLNet tracing to see what the ODBC driver was handing off to SQLNet/database. If you wish to see the log, let me know!

    DB:2.68:Error Updating Linked Table d3

    Adamnb1,
Thank you for your feedback. Hopefully, Oracle will resolve this issue.

DB:2.68:What Is The Advantage Of Enabling Sqlnet Inspection In Asa Appliance mc

I am trying to understand the advantage of enabling sqlnet inspection "fixup protocol sqlnet 1521" on ASA appliance.

The reason I asked this is because everytime I enable this feature on the ASA appliance, it ended up breaking sqlnet connection.

One of my Oracle applications needs to run a very long sqlnet querry to transfer about 2GB of data between systems.  Enabling

sqlnet connection on the ASA breaks this sqlnet connection.

I would like to know the advantage of enabling sqlnet connection, aside from the standard response from Cisco.

    Thanks in advance.

DB:2.68:What Is The Advantage Of Enabling Sqlnet Inspection In Asa Appliance mc

The fixup protocol sqlnet command causes the PIX Firewall to do the following for SQL*Net traffic on the indicated port:

    Perform NAT in packet payload.

Dynamically create conduits for SQL*Net redirected connections.

Use the no form of the command to disable the inspection of traffic on the indicated port for SQL*Net connections. If the fixup protocol sqlnet command is not enabled for a given port, then the following will occur:

Outbound SQL*Net will work properly on that port as long as outbound traffic is not explicitly disallowed.

Inbound passive SQL*Net will not work properly on that port.

Using the clear fixup protocol sqlnet command without any arguments causes the PIX Firewall to clear all previous fixup protocol sqlnet assignments and set port 1521 back as the default.

    More Info

    SQL*Net
SQL*Net is used to query remote SQL databases. Although the protocol was written by Oracle for Oracle databases, it works equally well to query the SQL databases of other vendors. The main issue to consider when securing SQL*Net is that while it only uses one TCP port for communications, that port can be redirected to a different port and, even more commonly, to a different secondary server altogether. When a client starts an SQL*Net connection, it opens a standard TCP channel from one of its high-order ports to port 1521 on the server. The server then proceeds to redirect the client to a different port or IP address. The client tears down the initial TCP connection and establishes the second connection using the redirected port.

    NOTE

While the default port inspected by the fixup protocol sqlnet command is 1521, Oracle registered TCP and UDP port 66 with IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority). You may be required to add fixup protocol 66 to your configuration to support your particular implementation. Please see the following web page for details: http://www.iana.org/cgi-bin/usr-port-number.pl

I'd put money on it not working.

16-bit client libraries haven't been available in a long time-- I don't think there were any versions certified on 2000 let alone XP. The 7.3 client was certainly not certified on 2000 or XP.

I would strongly encourage the customer to keep at least this component on the existing machine. If you're not going to upgrade the client, I would resist upgrading the OS.

I would like to know how "fixup protocol sqlnet" works on PIX.

I personally think "fixup protocol sqlnet" just scans/inspects embedded IP address and port number on SQL packet and not protect SQL injection because of PIX provides just packet level filtering.

Given that Oracle7 is no longer a supported platform, I'm not sure that you're guaranteed that this will continue to work as you update the database version. I'd expect that it would work with 8.1.7, but it's hard to be sure without trying.

If the errors are from the database or SQL*Net layer then the SQL*Net logging should capture them. However, if they are coming from the ODP.NET part or from the OLE/COM/.NET subsystems in Windows, they will not be captured there.

I assume from your post that you laready have SQL*Net client side logging enabled?

    DB:2.62:Tomcat-Ting To Ora9 83

Are you perhaps referring to connection pooling? That should work with either. If you are referring to how the drivers implement the database session management, I am not sure. It is true that they are not quite the same. The OCI driver defers everything to the underlying network layer and the thin driver implements a portion of the TTC protocol in java. I would guess that there may well be session management related performance enhancements that the SQL*Net layers implement which are not there for the thin driver. You would need to do some testing to see if the added benefit would outweight the extra configuration management. Having the client layer installed is yet again something to maintain and upgrading the OCI driver may require upgrading the client as well.

    Aman and baskar.l,

Thanks for the compliment. I could have set up a test case where the long 'SQL*Net message from client' wait appeared between the parse call and the EXEC call, but that is a bit more difficult with a simple demonstration in SQL*Plus.

It is good to see (likely with the help of John Brady's explanation) that the OP (Guess2) was able to see the cause of the wait.

It is also good to see that there are several people in the group who are willing to spend a couple minutes to try to help people with the exact problem that people are experiencing sometimes with links for further investigation.

I think you did the following:

1.) At the Operation System log on as user root.
    2.) Then you start sqlplus
Until this Point there is all ok.
3.) The tool sqlplus asks you for a user name.
4.) You enter as user name root
    and get the error message.

If this is not your problem, forget the next lines and jump to
    Lots of greetings.

The user root is an Operation System user not a database user.
If you like to know all the users in the database enter the
following SQL-Statement after you looged on as user oracle:
    select * from dba_users;
All users you will see, are Oracle Users. With this user names
listet you can log on to the database. If you want an other user
to log on, look at the apropriate dokumentation for creating an
    oracle user.

But if you like to log on to the oracle database with superuser
priviliges use the user system. You can get the Password of
the user system in your oracle administrator dokumentation.

I hope, I could help you.

Has anyone run into this problem. We have multiple instances of a database running on the same box, using the same binaries. A JDBC program can query the first instance and retrieve the correct results. The exact same code run against the second instance retrieves 214 rows, none of which actually exist in the database, and doesn't retrieve any of the 4 that do exist. I know that there has to be something strange in the database, but I don't understand why it only shows up when using JDBC. If I use the same SQL in a SQL*Plus window, it returns the 4 rows in the table. Shouldn't they both return the same results, since the JDBC thin driver uses a SQLNet connection, the same as SQL*Plus?

Let me see if I understand this.

You have a trigger with absolutely no exception or error handling code whatsoever.

Once in a while it fails. And your first thought is to turn on tracing at the client and the database to see what might be happening?

Did it occur to you to add exception handling to your trigger so that when it fails it simply tells you it failed by logging information to a table or by sending you an email?

You can get the name of change log table by opening the DSO and using menu path Extras- Information ( log/status) - Dictionary / DB Status Button in the Change long table section.

You can create a generic data source on top of this table using RSO2 on BI Side and try to load it into another DSO from where you can report on it. You can look at the option of making it realtime data source if you need to report on the change log at less frequency.

Looks like storage engine is out of the loop and you only deal with data cached in memory.
You can take a look at the performance guide and see if you can optimize your MDX query. If you havent yet, see if installing SP2 improves your query performance.

vikas kohliThere are a number of possible reasons, but with such little information there's no real way for us to tell you.

    http://coskan.wordpress.com/2011/06/24/plan-is-same-wait-profile-is-different/

Outlines one example where test/prod instances are "identical" yet produce different access paths for a query. If you read the post you'll get an appreciation for the myriad of different reasons you could have differences.

Some more common reasons would be
    1) data volume differences between test/prod
    2) hardware differences between test/prod
    3) inaccurate statistics on objects involved in the query / procedure in question (gathered with the DBMS_STATS package) in either test or prod (or a difference between the two)
    4) load differences between test and prod (test has 2 concurrent users, prod has 2000 for instance)
    ....
the list could go on for quite some time.

However, when I and configuring the ODBC driver on my windows NT, I select Drivers, then click on Oracle ODBC Driver, then when I click on System DSN.. the driver specification is not there. Therefore, I cannot add the driver to then test it. The kicker is that when I do this at another machine; it works. At the machine that I want, it does not work... Okay, l so I deinstall the ODBC driver and reinstall it... the same problem happen. I check my TNSNAMES and SQLnet files and they seem fine.. I can log into the database okay.

If anyone has experience this weirdo problem, please let me know how youy resolved this.

I think I solved the problem I was using oracle ODBC 8.1.6.0 (which shows as 8.01.6.0 for some reason). I used the Microsft drive for Oracle and it worked fine.

As you are all aware, by default the 'inspect sqlnet' feature is switched on under the global policy map on PIX v7 firewalls.

I would like to keep the 'inspect sqlnet' feature on at the global policy level, but turn it off for traffic travelling between a specific source/destination network using access lists.

Is this possible? If so, could someone please provide some guidance on how to do this?

    Many Thanks

    DB:2.54:Pix 7.0 Inspect 11

I was interested in the original request to permit the remote site to perform the permit of the SQL traffic..

If one only has an outside and an inside.. then using the global should be about the same as putting it on the outside interface.. (is that correct??)

If one has many DMZ's.. then one could put it on the outside.. or possibly one of the DMZ's (is that also correct??)

We recently upgraded for Pix 525's to ASA 5540's and we are new to the policy statements and answers to the above questions would go a long way to giving us insight.

Check the database alert log, sqlnet listener log, and dbConsole log.

If you get the problem again, do some diagnostics as to what failed. Use tnsping to check the listener. Use sqlplus to login to the database.

Using 11.2.0.3.0 on unix sprac server, 8 cpus 32 cores 12TB storage. We have 16 batch servers doing inserts and ~100 users doing mostly queries. We have a wierd issue, we have a long query that takes 30 seconds to run 1st time then 10-20 secs every other time. Based on knowledge of DB we expected it to take a lot less. Then a developer reformatted it by taking removing extra white space and line breaks. all of sudden query takes 6 secs first time and 0.8 every other time. we tripled checked to ensure they are identical and that only difference is white space and line breaks. We tried it with SQLDeveloper, TOAD, SQLPLUS, from out desktops, appserver. we could reproduce it every time, with white space 10-20 secs without it 0.8 secs. Query is 200 lines long with white space 30 without it.Why would having white space make such a dramatic difference? because the query is longer eventhough its identical? We checked parsing times, etc, no difference. Is there some network setting, oracle parameter, sqlnet setting? Hi,
OK, if your intent is to use an Oracle database instead of a filesystem for transaction logging then it is my mistake. This feature was added in Tuxedo 11.1.1.3.
If that is what you need then the documentation does say that the TLOGDEVICE definition is required to start with "DB:".
"To output tlog information into an Oracle database, you must use the following TLOGDEVICE string to connect to an Oracle database:
    TLOGDEVICE="DB:Oracle_XA: Oracle_XA+Acc=P/Scott/*****SesTm=30LogDir=/tmp"
Oracle_XA is the published name of the Oracle XA interface. The series of five asterisks (*) in the TLOGDEVICE string pertains to the encrypting of a password."

    Regards,
    Bob

    PS:
As in the Tuxedo OPENINFO parameter, the Acc,SessTM,LogDir (etc) open string options usage is specified by Oracle database.
    The TLOGNAME requirement is:
"To output tlog information into an Oracle database, TLOGNAME must not be empty. If the TLOGs are stored in the same schema on the same database, the TLOGNAME must be unique for each log. You must make sure that there are no other programs using the table name TLOGNAME."

DB:2.52:Sql*Plus Hangs When Connecting To Remote Db (Solaris, 10gr2) ac

    First of all the particulars:
    Local System:
Solaris 8, Oracle 10.2.0.4, October CPU

    Remote System:
Solaris 10, Oracle 10.2.0.4, July CPU

We are trying to initiate a connection from our local system to our remote system using a DB Link. After opening SQL*Plus, we log in with user@dblink, are asked for a password, and after entering the password, SQL Plus hangs indefinitely (we typically have to kill the sqlplus process to regain our session). Also, logging into the local system with a local account, and then querying using the db link (select * from dual@link) gives the same result.

From the remote system, we CAN log into the local system using the same process, and we can also query the local system. in other words, it works in one direction, but not the other.

We have checked all the usual suspects: tnsnames, sqlnet, db_domain, global_names, and all are set correct for our setup (although I of course welcome suggestions to check something else in the files). Also have confirmed validity of /etc/hosts entries, and permissions on those files for the 'oracle' user. A 'tnsping' and 'ping' are both successful in both directions, though I understand these only check the listener and hardware layer.

Our Sys Admin has checked firewall connections between the two systems, and stated that they're open on the listener port (1521).

Listener log files on the remote host, when the hang happens, show an established connection from the local host.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to check for next?

Thank you in advance for the assist!

DB:2.52:Sql*Plus Hangs When Connecting To Remote Db (Solaris, 10gr2) ac

    Robert,

Correct. On either machine, if we connect directly (using ORACLE_SID) to the local database, we have no issue. All of us DBA types here are almost convinced that it has to be a network/firewall issue, but of course, us DBA types have to prove that it's NOT an Oracle issue before we can push the issue onto someone else :)

    Thanks!

DB:2.51:Jdbc Security - Ssl Vs. Sqlnet Encryption? 8a

I want to encrypt my jdbc traffic (DB 11.1.0.7.0). I know that I can either use sqlnet encryption and integrity, or I can use SSL (in my case, without authentication). The sqlnet approach seemed to be simpler to set up; is there any compelling reason why I should prefer one approach to the other? Does anybody have performance data on which approach is more efficient (given comparable algorithms, of course)?

    Thanks,

We're looking at the same thing right now. The factors we see are

    1. ASO is an extra cost

    2. Seems like the configuration of ASO is a little annoying; it's not clear to us how easy it is to set up encryption just for certain apps or whether it has to be more all-encompassing.

DB:2.51:Oracle_Home/Log/Diag/Clients Folder With No Adr. What It Is For? zf

Hi,I'm behind a troubleshooting in a 11.2.0.1 DB, and for it I enabled sqlnet trace level 16 for both server and client (since the issue is related with Nagios connections running on the same server). [So, this is my first time testing with traces]I'm also familiarized with ADR structure and adrci commands so I wanted to keep it, but no for sqlnet client traces generated by root user. This is my configuration. I move adr/traces to a separate volume, so I wont scary if they growth too much:parameter diagnostic_dest=/mnt/tracesvol/ADR/$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/sqlnet.oraTRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT=16TRACE_LEVEL_SERVER=16/root/.sqlnet.oraDIAG_ADR_ENABLED = offTRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = 16LOG_DIRECTORY_CLIENT = /mnt/tracesvol/client/TRACE_DIRECTORY_CLIENT = /mnt/tracesvol/client/TRACE_TIMESTAMP_CLIENT = onThis configuration writes all the server traces in the new ADR repository destination, and sqlnet client traces by root user in /mnt/tracesvol/client/ folder without ADR (cli_*.trc trace files). Trace files were generating on them as expected. The problem is that our sysadmin found the folder /root/oradiag_root/diag/clients/user_root/host_486939793_76/ with several trace files. In its subdir ./alert/, the log.xml said that $ORACLE_HOME/log/diag does not exist. So, we created that folder (but I dont know why he was looking for this folder. As I see on Parameters for the sqlnet.ora File he only looks for this folder if ADR is enabled and no $ORACLE_BASE variable is defined [but I've disabled ADR in /root/.sqlnet.ora]).After that , we found that the folder $ORACLE_HOME/log/diag/clients/user_root/host_486939793_76/ were generating new trace files, with the format ora_*_*.trc, but they dont content the same traces as /mnt/tracesvol/client/cli_*.trc hasWhat is this folder and all these traces, and who generate them? Regards

Hi,I think you answered most of your own questions.I found your post because I was looking at een exploding /var/tmp/oradiag_client/diag/clients.It appears that if the unix user who connects via the oracle client does not have a $ORACLE_BASE variable defined, the oracle client write to the $ORACLE_HOME/log/diag/clients.But if the $ORACLE_HOME/log/diag does not exist, it uses /var/tmp to put trace and alert logs in.regards

    DB:2.51:Sqlnet Vs Trigger sa

    Hello good after noon,

I'm reviewing Oracle v10g. the DBA implemented this nice logon trigger which Simulate access control on who is authorized to connect the DB from which program wich IP etc etc.

My Question:do you think it is secure enough to relay only on LOGON trigger and not use the IP white list in the SQLnet?

    thank you and good day

    DB:2.51:Sqlnet Vs Trigger sa

    Ok,
Let's assume for a while no one has access to the physical server. (Bearing in mind the protection of especially Windows servers is usually not arranged, and usually anyone getting on the server usually sees everything).
This means they can not see the sqlnet.ora. Note: if the server is hacked, they can see sqlnet.ora, but (again assuming) Oracle uses O/S authentication, they can get into the database, and will see the trigger too.

Let's also assume for a while the trigger is plain trigger code, the trigger doesn't call a procedure.
This will allow intruders to see the code, and the table storing the list of valid IPs. If the intruding user has select any table privilege he will be able to get the IPs, in whatever table it is.

If the trigger is calling a procedure, one can wrap the procedure, so the code is invisible.
That would be at least one line of defense. It also has the added advantage the PL/SQL is not parsed everytime.

Assuming I can not get access to the server, I would preferably NOT use a table, but I would use sqlnet.ora or Connection Manager instead. sqlnet.ora can block or invite nodes, but doesn't allow IP ranges, so you have to hardcode them all. Connection Manager does allow IP-ranges, and also is much more flexible and has more functionality.

Much depends of course how your database is protected. COTS is especially notorious for working with way too much privileges, and often no password at all.
