I have photos in both RAW and JPEG format. I know that when a RAW file is edited it is saved as a JPEG. I noticed that the size of the edited RAW file is often smaller than the same JPEG photo. (Sometimes it's up to 2MB or more difference.) Believing that a larger size photo has more detail do you recommend using one file format over the other (edited RAW v. JPEG) to create an iBook?

I think you are in the wrong support group to ask your questions. iBooks Author creates 'iBooks" which as you guessed are totally different from the printed or digital books which can be created using iPhotoUse the "Apple Support Communities" link, top of page and then scroll down to th e iPhoto support group ow whichever you think more suitable...or start here:-https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto

Oh yeah, true enough, but I didn't get the sense that the original question was about Lr's DAM capabilitles - and Lr wouldn't be my first choice for a jpeg editor.

DB:3.04:How To Import Raw And Jpeg, But See Only One Image? 9z

    This is driving me crazy.

I shoot sometimes RAW and sometimes JPEG on the same memory card. So some pictures have only a JPEG file, others (the ones I shot in RAW) have a RAW+JPEG pair (or at least, Aperture sees it that way when displaying the content of the memory card).

    What I want:
    - import only once
    - for JPEG files, JPEG is imported as master
    - for RAW files, RAW only is imported as master

There seems to be no combination of the import settings that lets me do this?!?!?!?

If, under the "RAW+JPEG Pairs" settings I select "RAW files only", all JPEG files DISAPPEAR from the import list. WHY? This setting should be for "RAW+JPEG Pairs" only, it should not affect images that only have a JPEG file. I want to import JPEG files as well, so I select "Both (RAW as master)". Now, in the imported project there are TWO images to deal with, which is not what I want.

Even if I were to import twice, how can I exclude the duplicates?

DB:3.04:How To Import Raw And Jpeg, But See Only One Image? 9z

Please ignore my post. Aperture behaves correctly. I got confused because many pics look alike, but aren't really the same pic. Sorry for the confusion.

I bought a DSL are camera recently and have been shooting RAWNaturally my library is filling up with raw files My question is - when I want to export a very high quality image how do I get it out of Aperture and keep it as a large ihigh-quality image in raw?The export options that I have - from dragging to the desktop to sharing as- all end up leaving me with a JPEG image which might only be two or 3 MB. The raw file can often be 10 or 15 MBSo what is the best way to output the full image?

DB:3.02:Working With Raw Files In Aperture 9j

In the Preferences you are only seeing the format for sending to an External Editor, and for Email.Under File/Export you have a full set of choices, each of which can be fine tuned. For example, you can edit the Original Size JPEG to have various levels of compression, while still having the full pixel dimension. You need to read some more, and familiarize yourself with the options.See:http://support.apple.com/kb/VI162and other such helps.Ernie

    Hi all,

I am looking for a workflow / script that allows me to convert some of my RAW files to jpeg while keeping the adjustments (i.e., I want to dublicate the original, convert it to jpeg, then clone the adjustments to the jpeg pic, and then delete the original RAW file). Is anyone aware of an automator script or any solution that can do this automatically?

    Thank you for your support!
    Peter

DB:3.00:Automatically Convert Raw To Jpeg, Keep Adjustments? 8f

When you "Export Versions", whatever adjustments you've made to your pictures will be kept on the export. Remember that the version is more like a set of instructions to apply to the master. When you export, the instructions are applied based on the version you have selecte, and then the conversion to output format takes place, whichis JPEG in your case. (This is in contrast to Export Masters.)

DB:2.94:The Raw Portion Of A Referenced Master Got Separated From Its Jpeg Pair When I Was Relocating Originals.&Nbsp; Can I Recombine The Raw And Jpeg Pair? fk

Hi, I'm a fairly new Aperture user and have just started storing my photos on an external hard drive. An error message appeared when I was relocating originals of a project. It stopped relocating at one image, saying that the jpeg file did not exist. I found the raw file name under the new project folder that I was relocating it to, but it's jpeg pair did not move. The file names look identical except one ends in .JPG and the other as .NEF. I tried to combine originals, but I got the same error message and when I looked at the files the raw now had (1) attached to it, whereas the jped didn't. The Aperture window started to close unexpectedly many times. I tried Repair Permissions and Repair Database and that seemed to stop Aperture from closing unexpectedly, but the raw and jpeg pair are still in separate folders. How can I get them paired up again or does it matter? I'm using Mac OS X and Aperture version 3.4.5.Thanks,sophie

    DB:2.92:Converting Raw To Jpeg ax

I am very intrigued with RAW vs JPEG. I am often frustrated with shadows or low light from shooting indoors. If I shoot RAW, what is the process in Aperture to convert it to JPEG and delete the RAW to save space and be able to be ready for easy export. My goal is to:
    1. Import RAW into Aperture
    2. Edit and save as JPEG and delete RAW to save space
    3. export to iphoto for family use and iweb.....etc.

Any easy steps to obtain this and does this process sound correct?
I know I am keeping 2 files of photos, 1 in Aperture and 1 in iphoto, but since I always make changes in iphoto, that is 2 files anyway, am I correct?
    Thanks for any help!

    DB:2.92:Converting Raw To Jpeg ax

Yes. It is creating a JPEG version based on your changes (and based on the settings you select for the JPEG you export -- again there are presets).

In Aperture their is a pull down menue for "RAW fine tuning". Other than those 4 or 5 adjustments am I correct that their is no difference in terms of adjusting a RAW or JPEG file in terms of exposure, contrast, levels, shadows and highlights, etc..? I understand that a RAW file is non-destructive but have not actually ever been able to see the advantage of adjusting RAW images over JPEG images. What am I missing?

One camera model's raw data won't be exactly like another. All raw converter software of any brand must be tuned for the specific way that data that comes off each new camera model's sensor, even from the same company.

the hard way is to go into your library and manually
delete each jpeg from each project and import group
... and then rebuild library ... i found it to be
just a huge pain so i have left 90% of them in there
    ...

I agree HD space is cheaper than that pain. Thanks anyway. At least I can put my question to rest.

    DB:2.81:Raw Vs Dng 91

I shoot in RAW and tend to do most work in RAW converting to JPEG only for printing. I back up all my files on a seperate hard drive. Should I save these in RAW or DNG and for what reasons?

    DB:2.81:Raw Vs Dng 91

Tom, when I import my raw files into Lightroom, I just have Lightroom do the conversion to dng right then. I've not noticed any difference in quality or in 'editiability' of the dng based image.

Yes, it does slow down the import a bit but not objectionably so IMO. But then again, I download my photos into my filestructure with ACDSee V8, and do a preliminary culling in ACDSee. I only import the 'keepers' into Lightroom in place. I also have LR copy the dng images to a backup folder which I then burn to DVD with ACDSee(and then clear the backup folder). I edit the photos that were imported in place. Once I have a 'finished' photo, I export to an appropriate output format (usually jpg). I let ACDSee handle distribution such as printing slide shows etc. I just don't like LR for those functions.

I like dng, because the file size is smaller than my orf files and I don't have to keep track of the side car files.

DB:2.79:Raw Edits Stay As Raw dd

Quote from iPhoto '08 Help re edits to a RAW file in iPhoto '08:

"When you click Done, your editing changes are applied to the RAW image data and stored as a JPEG file (the original RAW file remains unchanged). . . . iPhoto simplifies the RAW workflow by combining RAW editing and JPEG conversion into one step. . . ."

So where are these jpg files stored? I edit in iPhoto, click Done and the RAW preview shows the changes with info showing it as RAW. No new jpgs to be found in iPhoto or elsewhere.

I can export to jpg or other file types and reimport, or drag to desktop resulting in tif and reimport. But what is that Help note supposed to mean?

    Thx

DB:2.79:Raw Edits Stay As Raw dd

    1. The jpg is not easily accessed, as it is buried in a folder which is not intended for user access - you even suggested, twice, not to mess with that folder.

You are simply accessing it incorrectly

click here for a discussion on the many correct and safe ways to access your iPhoto library photos.

the contents of the iPhoto library are easily accessed - there are never accessed by going into the iPhoto library and finding the folder for the photo

    2. Clicking Done does not produce a jpg in the iPhoto window, nor any notice that a jpg file was created or where it might be -like the common Save As protocol for example. So the required workflow would be to first understand that the the jpg was created, navigate into the LibraryModified folder, find the correct jpg (there might be many with similar names), and copy back into iPhoto or Preview or other ap. It's probably fewer steps to just export, which is about same workflow as other image aps.

Once again you are simply accessing yoru photos incorrectly - see above for a discussion on correctly accessing them

DB:2.79:Ability To Find Corresponding Raw File From Which Jpeg File Was Made From d3

If bridge had a way to find the corresponding RAW file from which a JPEG file was made from it would be a Godsend. Don't judge this request until hearing me out, it makes sense once explained and why it is so applicable to a large group of people who work similarly.

What I need is a way to let's say, highlight a folder of 100 JPEG files and right click in bridge and select "find all corresponding RAW files".

I'll tell you why it would do wonders for certain people. Let's say I get an album order from a client and they have chosen their selections online in JPEG format (obviously I can't put RAWs online) by dropping their selections into a drag and drop folder via a proofing website which syncs with desktop software on my studio computers.

I now have the ability to drag that folder of JPEG album selections to my computer. However, now that I'm at the step of processing them in Photoshop, I prefer to edit them from their original capture format for the best range of non-destructive editing options, which is from RAW format.

However finding the corresponding RAW file one at a time is tedious as hell. Reason being, all the wedding images have been sorted into different categories already (ceremony, reception, etc.) so I'd have to do a search in windows or navigate for each one. Data entry on 100+ image filenames is no fun.

In a perfect world, I'm hoping that Bridge has a feature where I can highlight the folder of client chosen JPEGs and then click "find corresponding RAW, CRW, CR2, etc)". I can't be too far off in this request because in Bridge the metadata has a section called Camera Raw when highlighting a JPEG and it even lists the name of the corresponding RAW file.

Does this feature exist? If not, I'll post this in feature requests. Thanks for listening, hopefully I made sense.

DB:2.79:Ability To Find Corresponding Raw File From Which Jpeg File Was Made From d3

The way I always pair RAW + Jpeg images is to sort by capture time and all the pairs match up. So simply label your Jpegs blue, green or whatever and they will now be easily visible in all the thumbnails, so you simply select all the RAW images next to them, label the RAW shots a different colour and sort by colour and they'll now all be together.
Now there's a wrinkle with your images being in varying folders, but as Bridge can do a flat view that solves this problem. Stick chosen and labelled jpegs into a folder next to all the other subfolders of job and click Flat View icon in filter panel.
There is one drawback, I just tried flat view and it completely failed to work. There's a surprise!

DB:2.79:Raw Files Straight To Book Layout? k8

    Hey all,
I'm interested in starting to use the Apple book services for my wedding proof books, but have a couple of quick questions I was hoping someone could help with.

In Aperture (2.12), can I just use the edited raw files in the book layout and trust the book's "conversion" to PDF to maintain both the edits (exposure, contrast, etc.) and the raw file's 300 dpi resolution? Or will I get my best results from exporting all of the raw files to jpeg/tiff and then re-importing and using the processed files in the layout?

DB:2.79:Raw Files Straight To Book Layout? k8

If what you mean is can you edit the raw images in Aperture and use the edited but un-processed images in a book the answer is "Yes". Aperture will display your edit settings in the book layout and when the book is processed for purchase the edits will be committed. Until then the images placed in the book can be re-edited.

If you mean can you edit and process the raw files into .tif or .jpg and use them, the answer is also "Yes" assuming you've processed to a high enough quality.

I wanted to see the difference between raw RAW images and JPG's created within the camera, so I imported all 600 pictures like that (300 RAW, 300 JPEG's). I set RAW as the Master and I see that I can set JPEG as Master afterwards, if I want.

    Questions:

    1) What is the easiest way to view the JPEG version? The only way I've found is to duplicate the image and then set JPEG as master.

    2) How do I go about deleting all (or some) of my 300 JPG images now? Isn't there a "show in Finder"-option so I can delete them like that (rather than navigating the Aperture library file/folder myself, potentially screwing up something) - or how is it supposed to be done?

    Thanks.

    DB:2.79:Imported Raw+Jpg ... How To Delete All Jpg's? sz

Wow, by that blog post, it certainly seems that importing RAW+JPG at the same time is not the way to go with Aperture 3, if you later want to remove one of them. I'll import them as seperate masters from now on, when necessary

DB:2.78:Finding Photos That Have Been Saved As Tiff j3

I've been using Blurb to make photo books, and love the results. One of the best things, is that it will read my iphoto library without me having to upload the photos to another website. Problem, is it will only read JPEG or PNG images in iphoto.

It does read my RAW photos as long as I have not edited them, but when I edit the RAW, iphoto saves as 16-bit Tiff. Which I like for keeping the quality of my photos. But then I can't get them in my books. So I've gone back and forth (being the indecisive girl I am) and some RAW are then saved as JPEG, and others as TIFF.

Now I'm trying to find which ones are TIFF. But I can't find anywhere that shows me what the new file type is after the edit has been done. I made a smart album of RAW, Edited but it will show me both the Tiff, and the Jpeg.

Anyone know how to find out the file type of an image. I've looked under "Info" and it still lists as RAW.

I noticed that the TIFF's have a file size of 0, so if there's a way to search for that criteria, that might help too.

DB:2.78:Finding Photos That Have Been Saved As Tiff j3

Thanks! For some reason, that won't actually find them. The filename is still .crw, at least what I can see. The search doesn't actually seem to search the "modified" file.

I wound up actually just looking in the package contents of iphoto, trying to find all files that have a .tif extension and then going back to iphoto to find the matching picture. Not simple, but at least I can figure out which ones are the tiff.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation). If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico: http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning. You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1089

I would like to organize my library so that it is either referenced or managed, not a mix of the two. Ideally I would like my JPEGs as managed masters and RAW files as referenced on an external HD. Is there a way to do this within aperture or is my best option to export my entire library and start over? And if I do export my entire library will it automatically re-pair my RAW and JPEG files? I don't really want to export as I have faces for most images. Also one more thing I'm not understanding. Is seems at though Aperture handles JPEG and RAW files exactly the same as far as editing goes. I'm not seeing any difference in the edited RAW vs edited JPEG. Does aperture indeed handle image adjustments the same whether it is RAW of JPEG?

DB:2.75:Poor Quality Noise Reduction For Canon G10 fj

I recently bought a Canon G10, and I am disappointed at the quality of RAW conversions done by ACR/LR at anything approaching a high ISO. The out-of-camera JPEGs show much superior noise reduction to what I can get from RAW files, no matter how I tweak the noise reduction settings.

At ISO 80-100 both look essentially identical.

At ISO200 JPEGs show less and tighter grain than I can manage with RAW (unless I nuke the details with luminance reduction), but both are still very good.

At ISO400 ACR/LR's RAW conversion starts to fall apart. Chroma NR in RAW is still handled well, the grain size in RAW is much larger than the camera's JPEGs. I need to apply a lot of luminance NR to reduce the RAW grain to match the JPEGs, and when I do that I lose a lot of detail. And even then, the larger grain isn't as attractive as the JPEG.

At ISO800 this problem is even worse. Big ugly blobs abound in the RAW conversion. The JPEGs don't look great, but they're very usable, especially if you're willing to dip the shadows a bit to hide the worst of the noise.

ISO1600 is interesting. The JPEGs don't look great; there's a healthy amount of noise, and NR kills a lot of fine details. But the image is usable for 4x6's or sometimes even an 8x10. But the RAW files are awful! Even cranking chroma NR to 100, there's color noise to be seen. And even with very careful use of luminance NR and sharpening I can't results that are anywhere close to JPEG's level of detail and noise.

I understand that PS cameras like the G10 are very noisy by DSLR standards and so this might not be a focal point of ACR/LR development, but I'm surprised and disappointed that the JPEG engine in the G10 can do a better job handling noise than ACR/LR. I guess my hope is that ACR/LR will at some point offer improved NR so I can create photos using RAW that look as good as JPEGs straight out of the camera. As it is right now I'm in the unfortunate position of shooting JPEG at high ISO to get usable noise performance. My dilemma is whether to even bother shooting RAW+JPEG when this IQ might be the best I ever get from ACR/LR for the G10.

I suppose my favored solution would be to either implement or license NR technology that matches NeatImage/NoiseNinja/NoiseWare. That feature alone would be worthy of justifying a 3.0 version for me. :)

DB:2.75:Poor Quality Noise Reduction For Canon G10 fj

I thought one of the major advantages of plug-ins (ie modular software) was to avoid burdening the main program down with extra code (and cost) so that individual users can add features to fulfil their requirements.

Just imagine, if Adobe thought it would be a good idea to buy out
all the 3rd-party plug-in developers and add everything to the already bloated Photoshop!

What color space are you using in your camera? Most are set to sAdobe, which will use a narrow group of colors. sAdobe is for putting images on the web, which is why they look good on yoru monitor, but not so much when you print. When you print you need your printer to output a larger gamut of colors. The result is you will get washed looking photos when you print. So Adobe 1998 is the selection you should make in your camera if you intend on printing. Also, keep in mind that RAW means raw, in that nothing is done to the file. You should make any necessary adjustments to exposure, color tone and sharpening before printing.

In 99% of cases you want the RAW file. Can I ask why you're shooting RAW+JPEG? In general, unless you have a very specific workflow (i.e. shooting 2000 shots for a sporting event, and getting them to an editor), a RAW-only workflow makes a lot more sense than RAW+JPEG because with Aperture you can create a JPEG from the RAW any time you want.So keep the RAW file. But Aperture will import them both, and managing that takes more work and effort unless you have a very specific reason for shooting RAW+JPEG.

DB:2.71:A Few Questions From Someone New To Aperture (And Dslr Photography) f3

Hi - I have just got my first DSLR camera (A Nikon D3000) and am trying out Aperture 3. I had a few questions which aren't all just necessarily Aperture related:

I have imported my library from iPhoto, however now all my albums are in alphabetical order, rather than date created. I only seem to have the option to arrange my albums by, "Kind", "Name" or "Manual". Any idea how I restore the date created order?

This may be too large a subject for here (I should probably buy a book on the subject), however JPEG, NEF and TIFF - I am shooting in raw mode which is generating NEF files. I had tried RAW+JPEG, but the basic JPEG this creates is really quite poor. The NEF files are generally around 7-12Mb. If I open them for editing in Photoshop, a TIFF file is generated in Aperture which looks to be over 8x the size of the original raw file, sometime over 100Mb. I then seem to be able to save it back as a JPEG at pretty much maximum quality which results in a file slightly smaller than the original raw file. Is it necessary to keep the large TIFF files once I've created a jpeg? Am I best off just keeping the finished jpeg and the original raw file in case I want to make changes?

When publishing to flickr, It would be good to be able to just publish the latest versions of all photos in an album. ie not the same photo in tiff, nef and jpg format. Is there an easy way to do this, or is it a case of manually picking each one?

Also - When uploading NEF files to flickr it would appear to convert them to jpg, which is kind of good I suppose, but does anyone know what level of quality the jpegs created are? Am I best off converting them to jpeg myself first and then uploading? If I did this then my albums would be full of duplicates in different formats, which leads back to my previous question about uploading just one version of each. That may be a question for the flickr forum...

DB:2.71:A Few Questions From Someone New To Aperture (And Dslr Photography) f3

You have jumped into the deep end with both feet.

With Aperture running select the single the Browser and you will find the sort controls under the Mobileme to New Smart Album icons depending on how stretched out you have the Inspector panel. There is the ability to sort by just about every parameter there either ascending or descending.

Can Aperture not convert your NEF files? You dont have to have Tiff files at all. See your Preferences regarding External Editor. How much storage space and your archiving requirements will influence your decision about retaining Tiff files.

I know nothing about Flickr but assume you will have to choose your own images. I doubt a Smart Album can select exactly what you need.

When uploading files online galleries generally optimise the images. You are wasting your time uploading massive Tiffs IMHO. Most web services work with jpegs I understand. Consult the Flickr help and support for their requirements and advice.

    Enjoy your new hobby.

    AW

Whether you have the room to save Tiff files as well as Raw files will probably decide whether you keep them or not.

2.what features do you not have if you open tiff or jpeg in ACR? It seems to do everything the same.

    Thanks.

DB:2.71:Working With Tiff And Jpeg? ps

    1. If I understand it correctly, with a raw format file you can throw away the sidecar xmp file and the raw file will be just like it was when taken with a camera. Since the xmp metadata is stored directly in the tiff/jpeg, after you close the file, are the changes permanent? Is there a way to reverse it back to the way it was prior to making the changes in ACR?

    2. What do you mean by "the settings are not actually applied until you actually process the images."

What does it mean to process a tiff/jpeg? I thought only raw file formats are processed in ACR.

    Thanks.

DB:2.70:Adobe Camera Raw For Nikon - Generate Jpeg With Color Off 37

    Hi,

I am learning Photoshop and Camera RAW. I am using CS2 and ACR 3.7 on Windows XP.

I have noticed that the JPEG file generated by CAMERA RAW has the color slightly off (towards the bluish direction).

This is what I did, I started Adobe Bridge, I opened up the Nikon RAW file (from D200) with Camera RAW and then generated the JPEG file without using any AUTO or custom setting (took the As SHOT setting). After the JPEG file is generated, I compared the JPEG file, with the file on Camera RAW window, the color of the pictures don't match up. So what you see on Camera RAW window is not what you get in JPEG. The color shown in the Camera RAW window is warmer than the JPEG file. I used the Widnows default jpeg viewer and the Arcsoft Editor to look at the JPEG file, and confirmed the color of the JPEG file is off from the original RAW filed viewed Camera RAW widnow.

However, when I opened that same JPEG file (generated by Camera Raw) in Adobe Photoshop, and the original RAW file (without any modification) in Photoshop, the color of the JPEG file matches up the color of the original RAW file only in Photogroup. I am confused now.

Why the color of the JPEG file (generated by Camera RAW) looks OK on photoshop, but it is off in other viewers (default Windows viewer or ArcSoft Editor). However, when I used PictureProject (supplied by Nikon) to generate the JPEG file from that same original RAW file (without any modification), and I looked at the JPEG file (generated by PictureProject) on Photoshop, Arcsoft Editor, and default Windows viewer, the color matches up to the original RAW file on all viewers. So the problem only happens to the JPEG file generated by Camera Raw. Any idea?

Who knows when those scratch files were created they are normally deleted when PS is closed down correctly.

And, from what can be gleaned here in the forum, the scratch files are created as soon as PS is opened and their size is based on previous usage rather then current files.

    DB:2.68:Raw Plus Jpeg Confusion k1

I have several Lightroom folders with both raw and jpeg versions of images. The Library grid view shows each of the raw files as "RAW + JPEG" and the metadata panel shows it as a raw file with a jpeg sidecar. The jpeg files show in Grid view as jpeg's.

When I run a "Synchronize Folder" it tells me that all of the actual jpeg files are "missing" and asks if I would like to remove them. But they are not missing, either from the folder or the library. I can view and adjust them in the Develop module just fine. Both raw and jpeg files are also listed normally in the Finder

    I am running LR 2.5 on OS X 10.5.8

How can I get this straightened out so that both raw and jpeg files are listed correctly (separately) and none are considered "missing"

    Many Thanks

    DB:2.68:Raw Plus Jpeg Confusion k1

Thanks. The thing is that these files were originally imported with the 'treat separately' choice checked. Somehow, that box got unchecked and it affected all files already in my library! If I go in and change my preferences back to treat the jpegs and raw as separate files, there are no longer any missing files, but the raw files are still designated as 'raw+jpeg' with a sidecar. That would seem to be a bug.

Also, I rarely shoot or import both raw and jpeg, but occasionally want to compare development settings against in camera processing modes..

    Thanks

The (in my opinion) best camera for the OPO just got better: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flavionet.android.camera.pro

It now supports dual output of jpg and RAW DNG files:

New: RAW capture feature on the OnePlus One with a brand-new RAW engine that works also on Android 4.4. Now you can enable RAW capture in Settings/Photo encoding settings. RAW files are saved in the standard DNG format. When enabling RAW capture, the camera will produce a JPEG and a DNG file simultaneously.

DB:2.68:Camera Fv-5 Now With Raw Support On Opo Cm11 m8

The default camera does export DNG files, which is the only reason Id switch back to it. But now that FV-5 does RAW as well, I can use its superior photo abilities all the time.

I prefer FV-5 over the default app because it allows me more control and also seems to produce better quality shots.

    DB:2.67:Raw+Jpeg Workflow Issues 73

When shooting RAW+JPEG Im having trouble finding a good workflow (Canon 5D Mark II, LR 2.2, Windows), whether or not I import with LR treating the RAW and JPEG files as separate photos. (Im drawn to shooting RAW+JPEG as the Mark IIs JPEGs are often very good.)

One major problem with importing RAW and associated JPEG as one unit (i.e., not as separate photos) is what I consider to be a bug: when I export metadata and ratings, they are applied only to the RAW file and not to the JPEG. Is there a setting I havent noticed or an easy workaround?

Also, after importing as one unit, it would be very convenient to be able to separate the RAW+JPEG into separate photos (e.g., for editing and export). Why does the combined vs. separate approach have to be decided on at import time without being able to change it later?

In trying to work around the above problems, I import as separate photos and try to treat each RAW+JPEG pair as a unit. As some have suggested, perhaps the best approach is to create a stack for each RAW+JPEG pair (easy with auto-stack). But this approach is very limited because you cant really treat a stack as a unit, i.e.:

    - quickly apply metadata and ratings to a stack
    - delete all photos in a stack
    - move a stack for sorting and into collections

You can work around these limitations by unstacking each pair and selecting both, but thats a bit clumsy.

Any advice or info would be appreciated.

    Hi,

I am shooting most of my as RAW file and in order to save some space I would to do the following after I made adjustments to the RAW file
    - Export it to a Final JPEG version
    - Make that JPEG the Master and get rid of the RAW file

Is a there a quick way to achieve this ?

    Thanks a lot

    Vadim

    DB:2.67:Making&Nbsp; Version As Master ?? 7p

RAW files contain much more image info than JPEGs do, so find a way to keep the RAW files as the Masters. Personally I strongly recommend using a Referenced-Masters Library with Masters on an external hard drive. Aperture's default Managed-Masters Library is a bad idea in the long term for most laptop users.

The workflow as suggested below in an earlier post of mine uses my preference, a Referenced-Masters Library.
    --------------
I feel pretty strongly that card-to-Aperture or camera-to-Aperture handling of original images puts originals at unnecessary risk. I suggest this workflow, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:

Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a memory card reader. Faster readers and faster cards are preferable.
Finder-copy images from memory card to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
    Eject memory card.
Burn backup hard drive or DVD copies of the original images (optional strongly recommended recommended backup step).
Eject backup hard drive(s) or DVDs.
From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location." This is called "referenced images." During import is the best time to also add keywords, but that is another discussion.
Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing in Aperture).
Reformat memory card in camera, and archive originals off site on hard drives and/or on DVDs.

Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media/backups.

Also note with a Referenced-Masters Library that use of the "Vault" backup routine backs up the Library only, not the Masters. Masters should be separately backed up, IMO a good thing from a workflow and data security standpoint.

When I load raw images, Aperture seems to under expose each picture by about 1/2 stop compared to what is actually shown on the camera's LCD. (JPEG images are loaded without any adjustment by Aperture.) Why is this happening or is it normal? Are there some settings that I need to change to correct this so I don't have to manually increase exposure on all raw images?

DB:2.66:Why Does Raw Image Processing Under Expose Pictures? f1

It's not darkening the RAW images as they load. Aperture will, unless you set it otherwise, use the in-camera converted-from-RAW JPG as a placeholder while it converts the RAW file using its own converter.A RAW workflow differs in many ways from a JPG workflow. Are you familiar with RAW?

    Hello,

I am a travel photographer and I encounter much difficulties with my workflow with the 5D Mark III.

I chose the separate recording option (NOT the multimedia option) in order to shoot RAW on CF and JPEG on SD. I use temporarily the JPEGs for on-the-go quick editing, metadata management and uploading on the internet while on travel. The RAW files will be used when I am back home. I have no intention to keep the JPEGs after, they are temporary.

The problem : when I delete a RAW file from the camera, it does not delete its JPEG counterpart or vice versa. So, I have to do the work twice.

IMHO, there are no good reasons for such a behaviour:

    1) If i want a backup on the SD card, there is the multi-media recording option for that. That´s what it is designed for. In this case, I understand that deleting from one card does not affect the other.

    2) If I delete a RAW file from the camera, what is the point having the JPEG kept on the SD ? For serious photographers (5D Mark III users), a JPEG will NEVER be a backup for a missing RAW.

    3) Implicitely Canon agree with this behaviour since when shooting RAW+JPEG on the same card, deletion affects both RAW and JPEG.

What are other users' and Canon team's point of views on this ? Can a firmware update fix this ?

    Thanks a lot,

    Yoms

DB:2.66:5diii Pb With File Mng With Raw On Cf + Jpeg On Sd jm

Thank you Mike for your reply.

I understand that this cannot be implemented in the future release. Uncompressed HDMI seems a bigger a priority I guess.

However, do you, in the principle at least, agree with the fact that a JPEG cannot be a backup for a deletd RAW and that for backup purpose there is also a dedicated mode ?

    Cheers,

    Yoms

There's no easy answer. If you do edits on the RAW file (which, arguably, is the main reason one shoots in RAW), then you probably need to use the same editor for the conversion to JPEG. Otherwise you'll probably lose the edits. There are various editors that will handle RAW, but different cameras create slightly different RAW files. So you need to choose an editor that will stay up to date with the latest changes and ideally will not charge you for updates to new versions. All this favors the camera manufacturer's software (Digital Photo Professional, in Canon's case), but manufacturers' editors tend not to be as feature-rich as third-party editors are. So you have to either do some careful evaluation based on your individual requirementsor try several editors and see which one you prefer.

iphoto 5.0.4 isnt importing in raw format from my panasonic dmc-lc1. the camera is on the list of supported cameras. when shooting in jpeg best quality, file sizes are around 3.5mb. now when shooting in raw, files appear in jpg format around 1mb both in the info window of iphoto and in the originals folder in finder. no raw tagging or extensions anywhere. now how can i at least backup the files from my sd card to continue shooting?

DB:2.65:Iphoto 5.0.4 Not Importing Supported Raw zp

    hi rick

    thanks for the swift response.
yes, i was looking for where to select default download application! anyway, the files imported using image capture still turn up as 1mb jpegs, although they show up as raw in my camera's preview info. its strange, because the speed while shooting was so much slower than jpeg.
also ive downloaded raws from this camera before. maybe it was during my 30 days of trying out cs2, or maybe the raw files keep their integrity better when first uploading them to ipod as i usually do. still some things to check out before sending the camera in for service

    thanks anyway

Hi, how can I take stills from a DVD to use as jpeg files on a digital picture frame. Also will they be furry or sharp ? What software do I need and what is the best way to proceed please.

    Thank you

    Hi
There are various dvd rippers that will allow you to capture a screenshot too - try http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-ripper-mac.html.

An easier way,as is suggested by the other reply, is just to play the DVD on your Mac, pause it at the scene you want then use a screen capture program to save the image. Quality will depend on the size of the window the video resolution used. One such program is Apple's grab (in your Utilities folder) which saves as TIFF files (which you would need to convert) or you could use something like SnapNDrag (http://www.yellowmug.com/snapndrag/) which lets you get a JPEG file.

    Hope this helps

Do you have to remove the photos from the catalog and re-import, or has the folder synchronizer been enhanced to be able to separate the jpegs from raws after import?

It used to be "common knowlege (or perhaps mis-knowlege)" that there was no way to repair (separate after importing) without re-importing.

hey all. new to iphoto forum. any help would be appreciated.

when i bring in raw files to iphoto and save them as high quality jpeg there is a major difference in color quality between the jpeg and the original raw file. we've talked to a genius and still haven't been able to figure out this problem. the jpegs are dull, muted, and dark. they look exactly the same on a mac but when files are viewed on a pc or printed there is a major difference.

so the bottom line question is, what is the best workflow to take raw files and get high quality jpegs to be printed? and can i do it in iphoto or must i use aperture or photoshop?

    thanks in advance!

DB:2.65:Dull Jpeg Colors From Raw Files p8

Generally, it's recommended to use ProRGB and not sRGB (sometimes referred to as "stupid RGB" as your colorspace for RAW files. I use both Lightroom and PS CS3 and this is my basic print setting. If you're going to post to the web, then, yes, sRGB may work better. Just a thought.

LR 4.4 will support your Sony raw files natively, so theres no need to convert to DNG. Just update to LR 4.4 and be done with it. If you are using LR 4.4 and they are not importing, then there could be some other problem with the files, themselves, that needs worked through.

i d't now how to load the image using 'CLibJPEGImageReaderSpi' class object
or is there any other way to load the image ?

can anybody write the full code to display the true lossless jpeg image

With JAI-ImageIO 1.1 installed, all I did was

BufferedImage img = ImageIO.read("C://lossless.jpg");and successfully read the image. The returned image was BufferedImage.TYPE_USHORT_GRAY indicating it was a 16 bit gray image. And when I displayed it in a GUI widget, it was completely black.

The other file - the one called "test.jpg" - through an IOException complaining the image was using an unsupported compression. I didn't dig any deeper as to why the exception was thrown.

I then wrote up a small program to save a bunch of images as lossless jpegs using ImageIO. I was able to re-read the images just fine (all 80 or so). So I then assumed "test.jpg" was using some obscure feature of lossless jpegs, or it was corrupted.

    Hello,

I shot using RAW+JPEG and I import both in Lightroom. During the importation I rename my file so both RAW and JPEG have the same unique name. I develop my RAW in LR but I would like to automate a few things regarding the linked JPEG:
automate the staking of the RAW and JPEG and put the RAW in the 1st place of the stack. I know there is an auto-stack feature using some time lag (in my case I can put 1 second) but unfortunateley the auto-stack is not based on the filename (regardless of the extension it's the same filename...) and usually puts my JPEG in the 1st place. Usually I crop my RAW file. I would like to automate the cropping on the linked JPEG file. Auto-sync might be the correct answer but I have a huge number of pictures and I cannot select each time the RAW and JPEG and auto-sync. So what I would like is some auto-sync using again the filename as a selection input.
I general, it's too bad that LR does not consider the JPEG as linked to the RAW. If we take RAW+JPEG it's because the JPEG has all the camera settings (colors, optimization of high or low light, etc.) and it can be a great help when you want in LR develop you RAW has if it was from your camera processing...

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 installed on it.

I use CS6 and a few days ago, I started having trouble when loading files (JPEG RAW files via Camera Raw). If I loaded more than two or three files, it would crash Photoshop. I tried loading JPEG directly into Photoshop, and it would still crash after 2 minutes. I tried restarting PS, reset my settings to default, restart my PC, and still the problem persisted. I checked the RAM and scratch disks, etc, there was no change with it. I decided I would reinstalled CS6. I did and now Photoshop works perfectly. I can even load JPEG via Camera Raw and it works without crashing. But then, my RAW files won't load via Camera Raw. I have the latest one from what I saw on Adobe's website - Version 7.1.0.354. Others listed are DNG converter but I don't need that.

The RAW files I am trying to open are from a Nikon D7100 camera and before, those same files would open with Camera Raw 7.1.

Can someone please help me out on this. I am a bit desesperate cause I urgently need to edit files on Camera Raw because all my settings are saved on this.

    Hi Guys,

Can someone explain how best to use JPEG RAW in lightroom 1.1?

    DB:2.63:Jpeg + Raw 33

There are several pros and cons for JPEG and for RAW format. Here is list of some:

    JPEG format

    + smaller file size

+ great portfolio of software to manage this format

    -- just 8-bit (8 stops) dynamic range

    -- lossy compression format

    RAW format

    -- larger file size

-- just a few programs to manage this format

+ usually 12-bit (12 stops) and larger dynamic range

    + lossless compression format

Generaly speaking if you don't care then JPEG format is enough for you. Just shoot and you have a photo. But having JPEG photography is almost like having the print of a photo, digitaly speaking You have lost the original so you are able to make just minimal adjustments, otherwise you will see what posterization and noise gain means and you will not like it

You are content with the JPEG photo unless you enter the RAW world Much larger dynamic range allow you to make photo-corrections like white balance, exposure, contrast adjustment, etc. in large scale. You are working with virginal data from the camera sensor not affected with lossy compression of the JPEG format. It is just aperture, lens, light and you. No digital filters usually used when camera is making JPEG from the same data.

DB:2.63:Exporting Raw Masters Of Raw-Jpeg Pairs jc

Is there any way to export only the RAW master of a RAW-JPEG pair? I always shoot both RAW and JPEG. In my workflow, I first import into Aperture the JPEG's. I then group into stacks, choose my stack picks, and finally rate all my stack picks. I then will go back and only import those RAW files which match my stack picks. Occasionally, I would like to edit my RAW files outside of Aperture using Capture NX2 and would like to export only those RAW files. Exporting a "version" only allows to export a JPEG/TIFF or other file. Exporting "masters" exports both master files, the JPEG and the RAW. Is there a way to only export the RAW master? Thanks for your advice.

DB:2.63:Exporting Raw Masters Of Raw-Jpeg Pairs jc

I'm frustating about how Aperture give RAW+jpg pairs and once imported is not easy to select one of the two files depending on the case. I read recently a good solution, you can import Both as masters(RAW and JPG) and select AutoStack(⌥⌘A)with a short time span (0:02) and Aperture will import the two masters of each photo, and later you'll be free to use one of them. And you can reject manually all the RAWs that you don't want to store.

I got Photoshop CS6 Extended from Creative Cloud. I got a problem with how CS6 handles the color info from files edited with CS5. I spent time searching the web for answers but am afraid I did not find any. Please help!

In CS6, my CS5 files look too purple. (Or you may call it too magenta or too blue.)

How can I get CS6 to correctly understand the color information of raw NEF files previously edited with CS5?

CS6 reads my previously edited NEF (Nikon Raw) files with a purple tint. The purple shows up in Bridge thumbnails, Bridge Previews, Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw, and Photoshop itself. If I process the raw (NEF) file with Image Processor, the JPEG produced is still purple. So, CS6 is consistent but not correct!

The appended Apple Preview screenshot shows the difference in the JPEGs made with CS5 and CS6.

    (1) Top Red: CS5 JPEG from image processor.

    (2) Middle Purple: CS6 JPEG from image processor. It looks purple in Bridge, Camera Raw, and Photoshop.

    (3) Bottom Red: Nikon Raw file as seen by Apple Preview.

I append an example of what my files look like in CS6 Bridge. Each pair of images should look the same, but CS6 makes the NEF raw images look purple. The left is the raw NEF file and the right is the JPEG that was produced from the raw file. There is no visible difference between NEF and JPEG images in CS5.

The same purple result can also be found in Lightroom 4.

DB:2.62:Automating Sychronization Based On Filename 73

I know there is an auto-stack feature using some time lag (in my case I can put 1 second) but unfortunateley the auto-stack is not based on the filename (regardless of the extension it's the same filename...) and usually puts my JPEG in the 1st place.Usually I crop my RAW file.

    Bye.

DB:2.62:Automating Sychronization Based On Filename 73

Interesting suggestion. Have you looked at each the already selectable preferences? The Lightroom developers have already given a lot of thought to JPG automation.

It has been my experience that as soon as I say "I really want X" someone in the forum responds with "X already exists by doing this, this, this, or that, that, that. For example, I would also like the ability to directly link the camera defined JPG directly to my RAW file. This would provide me with an optional way to define the DNG based on what the manufacturer thought it should look like while retaining its RAW characteristics and then be able to work with the DNG after the fact. However, this may be what the developers were attempting to do with Auto Tone and trying to decode what the manufacturers' intent was after the fact might not be possible.

I am sure that you will here that issues such as automatically cropping the JPG from the RAW will be defined as already existing by exporting to JPG after you have done the cropping. This may in fact be the answer to your question but it might not solve your problem because of unique requirements or method of working.

As a software system matures there is always a good and a bad:

The good is that the more a specific software system matures, more people will use it and beging to standardize on it.

The bad is that the more people that use a specific software systm, is that more features will constantly be requested making it larger and more expensive.

The real answer lies in a user defined batch system included in Lightroom (similar to the one that is in Photoshop) that allows user defined methods automating tasks that can be batch defined. This will allow developers to work on features that require subjective manipulation such as free transform.

For example, one of my pet peeves (related to your request) is that when the RAW file is imported to a DNG it no longer retains a connection to the DNG. If I am using DNGs to cull my original shoot, the RAW files are not deleted. The developers provided the ability to embed the RAW file in the header of the DNG (at the time of import) so that I could retrieve it at a later time but this creates a file that is twice the size of the DNG and I dont want to work on 50+ megabyte files. So this leaves the following options. I either have to do the culling before I import the RAW files (which defeats some of the automation of Lightroom), and results in a very large RAW archive, or I have to do some form of dual pass. This could be a solved with a user defined script.

I believe that the developers of Lightroom, or some third party developer, would do all the users a great service if they gave us access to all the database elements that could be automated and either develop an embedded batch system or provide automated batch plug-in.

I would love to see if anybody else feels the same way. Is this already there and I missed it also :-) ?

I import RAW+JPEG. How can I ditch just the JPEG or just the RAW half of the pair? A3 seems to allow display of only one or the other by making it the Master, but how do I get rid of the non-Master?

DB:2.62:Raw+Jpeg Pairs: How Do I Delete One, But Not The Other? kj

    There's an easier way:

Open the Aperture library contents (ctrl-click, select "show pkg contents"), and navigate to masters/year/month/day/downloads, and delete the raw file(s).

You can view by kind, and delete all the raw files in a project this way; just make sure you haven't assigned any of the raw files as master.

So far, I have not observed any adverse effects to the Aperture database, but they may be coming. I always archive all the files off-line before importing to Aperture, no nothing is completely irreversible.

It would still be nice, as another poster said somewhere, to render a raw file as a new jpg master, and then delete the raw, but I use raws so rarely, that deleting the ones I don't use gives me 90% of the disk savings.

DB:2.62:Importing Raw + Jpeg Vs Importing Just Raw Then Adding Jpeg To Catalog On Export. fd

I just got a new camera that allows the choice of shooting Raw+jpeg or only Raw. My old camera would only shoot raw+ jpeg. I liked the fact that with the old camera when I did an import that in loupe view it would show each image as Raw + jpeg. Renaming files in lightroom would rename all the files associated with the Raw file, i.e. Raw, Jpeg xmp would all be renamed at the same time, which is very efficient for me. Initially with the new camera I shot Raw + jpeg, but because I have always overwritten the camera jpeg when I export from lightroom I turned off the Raw + jpeg captured only Raw with the camera to save space on the camera card. After importing thw Raw only files running them through the Develop module I exported them back to the original folder like I always have. The problem is they are not linked like Raw + jpeg and renaming a file in lightroom only renames the raw the xmp not the jpeg. Adding the jpeg back to the catalog on export creates a separate image that can be stacked but isn't the same as importing the raw jpeg at the same time. Is there a way to fix this on the camera raw capture only files or am I out of luck with these? There are only a couple hundred so it's not too bad, but would like to fix it if there is a way. - Larry

    Hi, everyone.

We have a photographer that shoots RAW + JPEG. They provide us with the JPEG's so we can place in InDesign to see what works best.

When we make our selects, the photographer does post-processing on the RAW images and provides us with .PSD's. Although, the rez and physical measurements are different, the proportions are unchanged.

Previously, we had 'relink preserves dimensions' checked and we could simply drag and drop from Bridge and pop in the PSD in place of the JPEG and it would be in the same spot. Now, for some reason, the scale is incorrect and we can't get it to work whether 'relink preserves dimensions' is checked or not. Thanks, in advance, for any thoughts you may have!

I'm trying to import both RAWs and JPEGS at the same time and LR 1.3 is not doing so well. With previous versions I was able to import both a raw file (converting it to DNG in the importing) and bring along the accompanying JPEG (as a sidecar) at the same time. Now, 1.3 is no longer doing that. I can either import a RAW file only, or treat the additional JPEG as a separate image. This is no good. I need to import both RAW and JPEG at the same time and have LR rename the files (both RAW and JPEG) with the same names. What happened?

Thanks for the advice, yet this does not solve the original problem with LR no longer importing the JPEGs with the RAWs during import, which is the function I really need. Dragging and dropping from the finder is clunky at best. I'm hoping someone from the LR team can take a look at this and put this function back into the program.

Oh, and why does the import window on the PC version have so many ways of sorting while the Mac version can only sort using file name or date?

Ok, here is what I want to do. I use Aperture to organize and store my RAW pictures (as well as my edited photos, I use stacks), but I like to use Adobe Camera RAW to edit my RAW photos. I want to take my RAW photo, edit it in Adobe Camera RAW, export that RAW image back to Aperture for storage so I can create a JPEG or whatever for other editing in Photoshop. Is there a way to keep a file in RAW format between the 2 applications?

DB:2.61:Is There A Way To Integrate Photoshop Cs3 And Aperture? s7

I'm not sure if this will help, but I use Aperture 2.1 and CS3. I am coming from a many year user of LR and find the "round trip to CS3" much cleaner in AP. Remember you are not actually working on the RAW file in AP or LR - the RAW image is always maintained. I will do my sorting and editing in AP up to the point I need CS3 - which is becoming less and less with the new plugins and the basic power of AP. I will highlight the image, go to edit with and call up CS3. I will then go through whatever is necessary in CS3 then Save the work - NOT Save As! The image, layers, masks, etc. will be preserved and the re-worked image will appear in AP alongside the original AP image. If needed later, I double click on the CS3 image (it has a little "marker" next to the image for identification) and I am back in CS3 complete with all the CS3 work and I can pick up where I left off. In this way I can continue to PS the image as I wish without losing the past work -- Hit Save again and the reworked image will go right back into AP. The RAW image remains in its original form. If the issue is saving the PS work into the source file, you can Save AS in PS and point the image into the file. The only problem here is all the layers, etc. are flattened so you lose the ability to return to "where you left off." The only alternative I see is to use PS exclusively and Save the work pointing back to the original file. Making the point again, regardless of AP or LR's use, the program(s) are non-destructive and preserve the original RAW image. For me, the "round trip" in AP is much smoother than in LR.

DB:2.60:How Do I Process Raw .Dng Or .Pef From Pentax K20d Into .Tiff 'S (Or Jpegs) In Aperture 3? 3z

Hi Joakim. To put it baldly, you seem to be missing the point of Aperture, which is to as efficiently as possible create a flexible lossless workflow for converting, developing (some say "processing"), preparing for publication, and publishing RAW digital photographs.JPEG was developed for the Web, and does a great job compressing images for transmission on the Web and display on computer screens. Compared to RAW, it has (in the words of an engineer) "fairly limited editing headroom". Many photographers, for many reasons, want little or no limit on the "editing headroom" of their captures. Aperture excels at this. One of the ways it does this is that it does not store any full-size image-format files. Almost all of the images your work on in Aperture are created on-the-fly from text instructions applied to your Master file. When you need an image-format file of one of the images in your Aperture Library, you must export it. "Export" to Aperture, means "create an image-format file".To take advantage of what Aperture does, you should import as big and uncompressed image files as your can -- and keep them that way. Aperture performs no compression at all on your these files. Once they are imported into an Aperture Library they are referred to as "Masters". Every image in your Library has a Master.Compressing your Masters in any way that loses information (JPEG is designed to throw out information, retaining just enough -- and no more -- to make the image look good on a computer screen) violates the core design goal of Aperture. For many, this is not a problem. They purchase storage (and back-up storage) as needed. Aperture makes it very easy to store your Masters on any drive attached to your computer. You should read up on "Referenced Masters". There is a good section in the User Manual, and there are good posts on this topic almost every day here in the Discussion.Your other questions -- about editing and batch operations -- are best addressed in separate threads.HTH. :-)

This has been discussed a lot over in the ACR forum. Here's one thread, but I'm sure you can find others:

Took 10 pictures in RAW. Minor editing in Aperture 3. Uploaded to Sam's Photo for 4x6 prints. 8 went as jpeg (small file), but 2 went a tiff (25mg). These 2 took a long time to upload. What did I do wrong and how can I prevent this tiff (large files) in the future?

Using LR 2.7. Can't import raw files from my brother's memory card (Nikon D7100 I believe). Have downloaded DNG converter, and am fairly sure I have done everything correctly except I get this message: "The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files". Any idea what I am doing wrong, or what I can do to view my pictures? I should have insisted he shot in jpeg. :-(

It worked, and I have succcessfully managed to import them into lightroom. Thanks so much!

What is the best photo format to use when creating a book? Is it JPEG or TIFF?

    Thanks

    DB:2.59:Photo Format xc

If scanning be sure to use the sRGB color profile, even for black and white images. iPhoto doesn't play well with grayscale image files.

    Do you Twango?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

DB:2.59:Raw Images Alter When Saved After Processing In Cs5 Camera Raw? fa

    Hi,

I am currently experiencing a problem in Photoshop CS5, where after processing a CR2 RAW image file in Camera RAW, whether I then decide to open the image straight into CS5, or save as a jpeg or tiff file, the image completely alters from what I was previously seeing in the Camera RAW window?

The saved jpeg/tiff, or image now shown in CS5 is now very tinted, where objects that were perfectly white in the Camera RAW window are now a dirty yellow colour.

I was just wondering if there was any advice any of you could give me as to what the problem might be?

I have made sure that both CS5 and the Camera RAW window are both set to sRGB, but it has had no effect on the problem.

Thank you in advance for any help

    Russ

Your CM settings appear to be fine.

But it sounds like your monitor profile is hosed.

Calibrate and profile your monitor, preferably with a hardware calibrator puck.

Hi All,I need your help. I want to establish what the optimum image settings should be to get the best quality for a photo image I intend to print for display in a frame. What setting for image print quality do I set when exporting finished image from Lightroom to ensure best print quality as tif or jpeg. I shoot in RAW and export as TGIF or jpeg prior to printing.I'm looking for best setting for image to save as standard export setting for future processing prior to printing Thanks Craig

    DB:2.59:Lightroom 4 s1

Craig, I am guessing you will not be doing the printing. The output will depend on who is printing and with what type of printer and paper. let us know these and specific information can be given.

DB:2.59:Jpegs Opened In Adobe Camera Raw fa

With students new to digital photography and who are capturing in jpeg out of fear for the difficulties they assume go with RAW, I have found it useful to have them open some of their jpeg files in Adobe Camera RAW. They become familiar with the tools there and are willing to switch to RAW capture.

My question is this: What happens to that jpeg image if they set ACR to 16 bits and they continue to open their jpeg image into Photoshop (or Elements) with ACR set to 16 bits. Since that data isn't contained in the jpeg file, what does ACR do? Does it "manufacture" extra data?

    Mary Lou

DB:2.59:Jpegs Opened In Adobe Camera Raw fa

With either 8-bits or 16-bits black is 0 and white is the highest possible number, so adding bits just adds precision to the numbers, not extra data. With 16-bits you get 256 colors between each of the original 256-colors of the 8-bit JPG so its like having fractional colors compared to the original 8-bit colors.

An analogous situation using decimal numbers might be: if the JPG starts with 3 decimal digits of precision then the numbers could range from 000 to 999 with 000 being black to 999 being white, but if you doubled the number of digits to 6 then the color numbers would range from 000.000 to 999.000. These are exactly the same values as we started with, but if we choose to manipulate the colors, which is the point of using ACR in the first place, then we dont lose information.

DB:2.59:Camera Processed Copies Of Raw Files? z3

Hi, I was wondering, if there is a way to make a copy of a RAW file from the processing settings that the camera intially applies upon taking a RAW photo.

Essentially while looking through my RAW files in Bridge, I noticed that when previewing the files, they show as the settings the camera shot with (In my case, BW with Purple tint and fairly high contrast). Now what I want to do, is save a copy of this image as a JPEG file with the original settings, as if I had shot the picture as a JPEG. Upon opening Camera Raw I notice that these settings are scrapped for different ones, which isn't what I want. I'm new to shooting in RAW and in fact, the particular scenario at hand was caused by me accidentally shooting in RAW.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

The other option is to use Nikon NX2 or the free ViewNX2 to output JPG or TIF files using the in camera settings.

I am starting to use RAW, but Aperture doesn't import RAW files from my Fuji S7000. I work round this by opening the RAW images in Photoshop Elements one by one, saving them as JPEGs, and then importing them into Aperture. This is quite time-consuming! Are there any other ways of doing this?

Is there any way to get the RAW image into Aperture - if not, what is the best format to use, JPEG or TIFF?

When clicking done on a RAW image (or double clicking it) in iphoto, why is it that sometimes it works and other times it doesn't?

It seems to work if you make changes to the image but if you merely want to turn it into a jpeg so that you can export it to something like flickr it doesn't seem to work.

This means when I drag my images to flickr export it only accepts jpegs so half my album is not publishable to the web - or viewable by anything outside of iphoto.

    Any suggestions?

DB:2.59:Develop Settings When Importing Raw + Jpeg m3

When importing NEF files from my D700 I apply the landscape sharpening pre-set and am happy with the results. However on my Fuji X20 I import RAW+jpeg rather than just RAW, in this situation if I use the landscape sharpening pre-set sharpening is applied to the jpeg as well as the RAW resulting in the already sharpened in camera jpeg being grossly over sharpened. If on the other hand I use none for the develop pr-set no sharpening or noise reduction is applied to the jpeg and a minimum amount applied to the RAW file, more or less what I want except I want the higher landscape sharpening applied to the RAW files. Is there anyway to modify the built in pre-sets so that they only get applied to the RAW files when importing RAW+jpeg pairs?

Thanks for the reply. I am afraid I think you are correct . However having had a look at some pictures I took today I think Lightroom is doing a better job of processing than the X20 built in engine (not what one is lead to believe ).

I will probably revert to shooting RAW only with this camera.

    DB:2.59:Iphoto Raw Conversion as

While you are still experimenting, you could set your camera to shoot RAW JPEG, if the camera supports this. Then backup the RAW and work mainly with the JPEGs. If you come across JPEG, where you see, that you need the better photometric resolution of the RAW, because there is not enough detail in the shadows or highlight areas, you can still retrieve the RAW files.
