    If you use Workstation/Player/Server you have to use a bridge connection and put all VM on the same LAN.

    Or you have to put on each host a virtual appliace that can create a VPN connection between the two private LAN.

    No Confiugration has to be done on ESXi host. It amy be becasue of multiple VSS componets installed on the guest.

    DB:3.58:Max Number Of Virtual Servers Using Virtual Server p7

    Hello,

    Moved to the VMware Server forum.

    Create, no.

    Run, yes. Should be in the VMware Server Documentation as a maximum, but you will know when performance begins to degrade.

    This depends on workloads. ESX/ESXi has definitive limits on the maximum number of vCPUs that can run simultaneously. I have yet to see anyone run that many, but it is possible. VMware Server has similar limits.

    Make new directory for new VM

    $makedir /vmfs/volmes/.../newVM

    Power-off source VM you want to copy

    $vmware-cmd /vmfs/volumes/.../sourceVM/sourceVM.vmx stop soft

    Copy vmdk from source to new

    $cp -p /vmfs/volumes/../sourceVM/sourceVM.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/.../newVM/newVM.vmdk

    or using clone $vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/../sourceVM/sourceVM.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/.../newVM/newVM.vmdk

    to get more help $man vmkfstools

    vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/templates/gold-master.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/myVMFS/myOS.vmdk

    Clones the contents of a gold master virtual disk image from a template repository to a virtual disk named `myOS.vmdk` on the VMFS file sys-

    Welcome to the Community,

    did you start the Converter (I assume you are using the latest version!) by right clicking an "Run as Administrator"?

    You may also want to take a look at http://www.running-system.com/p2v-standalone-converter-error-a-specified-parameter-was-not-correct-spec-synchronizeimmediately/ to see whether this helps.

    Most of the time, such errors are the result of installing the JVM on the wrong hardware platform or unsupported OSes.

    If the VM is powered off, you can mount the virtual disk as a drive letter to your host and copy files that way. If it is running, you need to have the VMware Tools installed; then you can either just drag and drop files between host and guest, or setup a shared folder. You can also always use standard SAMBA/CIFS/Windows File sharing.

    I created a virtual machine with 2TB drives. I tried to take a snapshot of it. It failed. I did some searching for the problem. I found out VMware does not support taking a snapshot of a drive over 1.95TB. Why wasn't I warned about this when I created the virtual drives? That seems like an obvious thing to do. Instead, I get a response from VMware that I was stupid to create the 2TB drives. Thank you. (That is sarcasim if anybody didn't figure that out.) Is there any plans to fix this problem or did VMware just screw me and a lot of other people?

    It appears I have to recreate the virtual machine and copy the files to the new one. I guess I could try VConverter but I don't have much faith it will work because one of the 2TB partitions is full.

    Hey,

    I am trying to use Vmware studio with no luck,

    I have an Ubuntu server with Vmware server installed and another machine that is running the vmware studio image,

    Both can communicate fine, when I start the build, I can see that the files are starting to be copied from the studio machine to the targeted directory in the Vmware Server machine but then I get

    the following error:

    "Failure: The VMware Server at 10.0.0.12 is unable to start the virtual machine at this location: "/tmp/10.0.0.9_9/mybuild.vmx: The system returned an error. Communication with the virtual machine may have been interrupted"

    What could be the reason for that? 'Validate' works fine, and the build stars to create the files, that means I guess SCP/Vmware servers are up and running,

    Thanks in advanced,

    Asaf.

    DB:3.31:Communication With The Virtual Machine May Have Been Interrupted a7

    Is this problem reproducible?

    If yes, try building the appliance again via command line and this time with the --debug flag so that the transient vm is being kept for debugging.

    studiocli -v --debug -c -p /opt/vmware/var/lib/build/profiles/lt;yourprofile.xmlgt;

    When the build stops with the same failure, open a VMware Server console and connect to 10.0.0.12 along with the same login/pw that you entered in the build profile, then try to launch the targeted transient vm under /tmp. If this test also fails, that probably means the login that you use for the VMware Server isn't adequate for the operation. You want to use an user that can pass this test.

    DB:3.28:Conversion Ms Win2000 Server With Scsi To Virtual 1c

    Hi friends,

    I tried to convert my physical server, running on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with SCSI hard disk controller to virtual machine in VMware Server 2, running on host machine (running on MS Windows XP Professional).

    My advance was following:

    1.) installation VMware vCenter Converter Standalone (ver.4.0.1-161434) on physical machine "Win2KServer" (this server has two disk partitions - C: and D:. System and all programs and services are installed and located on partition C:, on D: are located some data (not important in this case), and this server has SCSI controller)

    2.) create virtual machine from physical machine "Win2KServer" only C: partition (setting was following: Select source type: Powered-on machine / This local machine; Select destination type: VMware workstation or other VMware virtual machine; Select VMware product: VMware Server 2.x; Location for the virtual machine: D:\SomeDirectory)

    3.) was created two files: Win2KServer.vmx, Win2KServer.vmdk, on location D:\SomeDirectory

    4.) copy these files to physical machine "WinXP" to directory C:\Virtual Machine, where are other virtual machine located. On machine "WinXP" running VMware Server 2 (there are running some virtual machine successfully - Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS)

    5.) in "VMware Infrastructure Web Access" I add through "Add virtual machine to inventory" new machine "Win2KServer", and start it through console. On first take was displayed some warning message (msg.noAutodetectBackingQuestion:Cannot connect virtual device parallel0/serial1/floppy0. No corresponding device is available on the host. Would you like an attempt to be made to connect this virtual device every time you power on the virtual machine?) - my answer was . On other take these warning doesn't exist.

    6.) virtual machine started successfully. In VMware remote console run OS Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. I try run (in remote console) "Windows Explorer". On exit of this explorer virtual machine shutdown

    7.) every other start of this virtual ends on Windows blue death screen (in VMware remote console) and I can start/stop/restart this virtual machine (in "VMware Infrastructure Web Access" (please see attached image Fyzicky_na_virtualny_02.png)), but if I try run "VMware remote console" every advance ends on death blue screen (please see attached image Fyzicky_na_virtualny_03.png).

    The same situation is if I reset (through menu "VMware remote console - Troubleshoot - Reset") this machine (please see attached images Fyzicky_na_virtualny_04.png -gt; Fyzicky_na_virtualny_05.png -gt; Fyzicky_na_virtualny_03.png)

    My question is:

    Where is problem? Can be reason that original machine "Win2KServer" has SCSI controller, but host machine hasn't it?

    thanks for all advice

    I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but is it possible to boot my host computer from a virtual machine? For example, I have VMWare Server installed on Windows. I create a new virtual machine for Ubuntu. Then can I reboot my Windows machine and instead of booting to Windows, it will allow me to go straight to the virtual Ubuntu machine without going into Windows first? It's a long shot, but I see lots of great magic happening from VMWare, so I figured it might be possible.

    DB:3.24:Boot Host Computer From Virtual Machine? 9a

    Maybe. I can with my setup in a round about way. I'm running VMWare server 2.0 in a Debian Linux machine. From any client (Windows or whatever) I can access shell commands via web programs, such as Webmin, or other clients like Putty. From there I can issue a reboot command. Of course both the host and the guest go down during a reboot. I say maybe because I don't know the programs to use with Windows. If there's anything that allows you to do a remote reboot it should work.

    DB:3.24:To Copy Flles From Virtual Machine To My Machine a1

    As I don't know your setup (if your host has a network card and if it is connected or not) I will explain how to do it with the internal VMware network.

    Your host should have at least one network card, called VMnet1. That is the virtual host NIC which is part of the isolated "host-only" virtual network. You can verify this by running "ipconfig /all" in a DOS box (on the host command line).

    You guest should have a virtual network card (vNIC). If not, add one. Set this one to "host-only". You can do this under the guest hardware options. By doing so you have at least two nodes in this "host-only" network VMnet1: the host and the guest.

    Set the guest TCP/IP configuration to use DHCP. By default the VMware DHCP server should be running and serve the VMnet1 network. If your guest receives an IP address of "169.254.x.y" something doesn't work. Verify this with "ipconfig /all", as well.

    If both machines have an IP address from the same range (most of the time "192.168.x.y" is used) they can talk to each other (ping). If this works, you can use the IP address for accessing the share (like I described in my previous post).

    Hello, I am a fledgling vmware admin for our school district. I have a 2008 R2 template that I deploy new virtual machines from. I opted to delete those files and now when i try to deploy a new VM from my template, I get the error

    Good evening,

    Is it possible in any way (using other VMWare products, e.g. for V2P, also)?

    DB:3.21:Create A Live Dvd From A Windows Vmware Server Virtual Machine mz

    I think you're barking up the wrong tree here. Ulli's MOA project creates a LiveCD system where you can run VMware and other tools without touching your host system. It sounds to me like you just want to create a Live version of the OS you have installed. Whether you create one from your physical host OS or from a virtual machine's OS the process would be the same. In other words, this has nothing to do with VMware at all. Just search the web for utilities to use to create a LiveCD/DVD from a working OS, and follow the procedures.

    I installed the VMware-server-1.0.5-80187.i386.rpm package on a CentOS 5.1 system. I then ran the vmware-config.pl program. I chose mostly default answer, except that I did not choose the NAT option; I saw no errors.

    I used the VMware Server Console to create a Red Hat Linux VM. I also copied an externally created VM into the '/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/' directory. I cannot power-on either of these VMs. The VM's console is blank for several minutes, after which the following message appears in a pop-up window:

    Unable to change virtual machine power state: The "/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx" process did not start properly

    Try running "/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx /var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/Red Hat Linux/Red Hat Linux.vmx" from the command-line on the server..

    I tried running it from the command line, as the message suggests. That just hangs forever. I don't see anything other than the above error message in the /var/log/vmlog/vmware-serverd.log file.

    I've tried rebooting, and uninstalling and reinstalling the VMware Server software. I even tried installing from tar file, instead of the RPM. Nothing changes.

    I'm completely stuck. Can anyone help me with this?

    DB:3.21:Vms Won't Power On a8

    Because I was in a hurry, I had to move this project to a different OS. I installed VMserver on Ubuntu, where I had knew it would work. I'll come back to CentOS later.

    But, for those that asked:

    1) I was not running the Xen verion of the kernel.

    2) The VMs that I was trying to start are good; they both worked on other VMware Server installations.

    I had the same problem. I simply forgot to put the path to the script /etc/init.d/vmware in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file to make it run at every startup.

    Note: I'm running Slackware 11.0, which still doesn't use the init.d and rcX.d runlevel directories. Slackware 12.0 does use a trick to emulate debian and other distros, but Slack users of previous versions must do this by hand.

    DB:3.16:Can't Import Virtual Machines From Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 With Hyper-V To Vmware Esxi 4. ks

    Hi team,

    I am using the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to import some virtual machines from Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V to VMware ESXi 4, using another Windows Server 2008 R2 as the Converter Agent machine. Well, the agent connects to the Windows source VM just fine (I used the net use command to create a pipe line...), perhaps no chance to connect to the target VMware ESxi 4 machine and make the converter works... .

    Follow is the error message:

    "Unable to connect to specified host '' from the converter agent machine. This might be because the host is not available on the network, there is a network configuration problem, or the management services on this host are not responding. Please verify that all Converter components are able to connect".

    So, my question is; is there any way to create a workaround (like the net use Windows command above) to make possible the connection, from the Windows Converter Agent machine to the Linux VMware ESXi 4 machine, to import directly the virtual machines from Windows Hyper-V to Linux VMware?

    Thanks in advanced,

    I am trying to run vmware gsx server 3.2 in minimum linux(CentOS4) and I used the minimum set up of CentOS, so there this is no graphic interface. Could I run vmware virtual machines in this enviroment? I tried import a virtual machine image file from other computers and registered it using this command:

    vmware-cmd -s register /var/lib/vmware/vm1.vmx

    it can register the virtual machine successfully, but when I try to power on,(vmware-cmd /var/lib/vmware/vm1.vmx start) it gives this messege:

    VMControl error -16: Virtual machine requires user input to continue

    I guess this probablly need to create new uuid before running it, But

    how can I do with that? Can I do it manually Or if I can create a new virtual machine without vmware manage console is also acceptable.

    You need to install the Virtual Machine Console on a remote PC (Windows or Linux) . This is in the client package that you can download from the same page you downloaded the VMware Server software from. The remote Linux PC would have to have GUI/XWindows(Gnome or KDE) will work.

    Because vmhgfs did not built correctly during the VMWare tools installation, I am unable to access my VMWare "Shared Folders".

    I tried to create a new virtual machine in VMWare Fusion 2.0.4 (159196) running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) using the ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso installer. During the creation of the VM I DID NOT use the "Linux Easy Install".

    Once the installation was complete I attempted to install the VMWare Tools. Everything was going along fine, until the VMWare tools installer gave the error "Unable to build the vmhgfs module". Now I am unable to access the "Shared Folders" through VMWare.

    A blog post at http://laptopbisnis.blogspot.com/2009/04/ubuntu-904-beta-in-vmware-fusion.html addresses this issue, and the solution is to edit a line in the page.c file, re-tar the modified folder, and then re-run the VMWare tools installation. Whoops! Sorry about being in the Fusion forum! Yeah, I'm running vmware player on XP, though I got an invite in email to beta fusion so I'll be doing that soon.

    I did find a HUGE file in my install which I deleted. I think when I did build-essential, the os made a backup copy of some core kernel file which was 400 meg. I deleted that on another build just to be sure nothing bad would happen, then deleted it on my normal system and all was well...until I used fslint to delete things. Not a good idea. But I had a backup, so I was able to recover from that, too.

    Biggest problem now: VMware Player 2.5.x has a bug relating to focus. If you click on another window, Player stays in the foreground unless you click on the title bar of the other window. This is not good.

Is there any SDK for VMWare Workstation like ESX SDK by which i can create a new Virtual Machine and deploy it? Actually my requirement it that, there will be a server machine(Normal windows machine) which will have VMWare Workstation installed and from my client machine which can be linux , windows or solari, i will send request(like ESX SDK) to my server machine to create new Virtula Machine and manage them. I went through VIX API but i didnt find any fuction to create a new Virtual Machine.

    With VIX, I think you've got the right API to work with workstation. You are right there is no method to create a virtual machine. But there is method VixHost_Register() for you to add a virtual machine. I think you can do some work like copying a existing virtual machine and modify configuration prior to calling the method. No exactly what you need, but with some tweak I think you can get what you want.

    Solved! I don't know why but importing virtual machines with 5.1u2 ESXi, Heads and Sectors in *.vmdk file are inverted:

    BEFORE:

    ddb.geometry.biosHeads = "16"

    ddb.geometry.biosSectors = "255"

    ddb.geometry.heads = "16"

    ddb.geometry.sectors = "255"

    AFTER:

    ddb.geometry.biosHeads = "255"

    ddb.geometry.biosSectors = "16"

    ddb.geometry.heads = "255"

    ddb.geometry.sectors = "16"

    Connecting to a host with SSH and editing *.vmdk file with VI the virtual machine will starts without problems!

    I'm trying to use a Vmware Player image that I downloaded from Google (their Single Sign On thing) but I am unable to get it to work.

    I know the file is supposed to be played in Vmware player, but I want to run it as a regular VM on my ESX hosts because I don't have a spare iron machine laying around to run VMWare player on, and it can't be run from within a VM.

    The folder containing the VMware player files conaints a .vmdk file, a .vmx file, a .vmfx file, and an nvram file. I tried to create a new VM in Virtual Center and then when configuring the Hard Drive selecting the .vmdk file from the Vmware player image. This didn't work because the .vmdk file was not selectable (I uploaded it to the datastore - it must not be registering as a compatible Virtual Machine disk) when trying to choose an existing disk from the file selection GUI.

    How do I use this VMWare player machine as a regular Virtual Machine running from VirtualCenter on my ESX hosts and not just through Vmware player?
