DB:3.57:Firefox Crashes First Time Only (After Starting Computer). Still No Solution After Some Forum Help. sf

When I open Firefox after turning on CPU it crashes after about 5-10 seconds. Afterwards, it works just fine. I have done all Firefox recommended troubleshooting, to no avail. I posted this problem on another forum thread and was advised to reset Firefox. This appeared to work for a short time, but Firefox is crashing again.

Since it works the second time I open it, this is really more of a nuisance than a crucial problem. However, I do want it to work properly. Please help.

Since I have installed Firefox 19.0 (first time installation and usage), my computer crashes several times a week: the Blue Screen Error comes up and I have to turn down my computer.
I've run all recommended system and disk checks. I also have Norton as anti-virus.
To my knowledge, Firefox is the only major modification I've made on my computer before the default started to occur.
It seems that other users have encountered similar problems with version 18 and reverting to version 17 (which I cannot do) seems to have solved their issues.

Not sure--I'm not even certain if it is passing null.  You could dump the stack (dds esp) in NTSD and see if you can find out what is being passed... but that's hard.  May be a bug... you could make a repro site and report it at connect.microsoft.com/ie and see.

    Hello Support,

I have been using FireFox about 8 years. The constant crashes have cause me to start using other browsers as my default browser. I have tried all the fixes in the forums. The problems seems to start once the Flash plugin is installed. Once the Flash Plugin is installed the crashes a constant, even after uninstalling Flash the crashes continue. The only way to stop the crashes, is to uninstall Firefox and the Flash Plugin at the same time. Why can't Mozilla fix the Firefox browser problem of constant Crashes, after the Flash plugin is installed? As long as I don't install the Flash Plugin
the browser is crash free. This happens on all the versions I have tried.

    Thank you

Your Firefox installation may have gotten damaged.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

    Firefox 16.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

You can also do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

    Hello,
firefox crashes after the first start after a installation in every version I've tested (3.6.25; 9.0.1; 10.0 beta). The problem also exists in the safe mode of firefox and it was detected the first time after a upgrade of the java plugin (as mentioned the problem also exists in safe mode, so the plugin could not be the mistake).

It is impossible to start firefox, except I uninstall it and with the reinstallation it works only 1(!) time.

This game i can play with every version and it's reproducable. With firefox portable it's the same.

Because the Computer is a Company-Pc it's impossible to delete McAffee Anti-Vir etc. Suite, which is always up to date. I was not able to find the siteadvisor-app from McAffee.

Now I've installed Firefox for almost 4 years on this machine, and now the problem exists, I'm sorry to contact you, but this is my only chance to get help anymore. I also have tested the knowledge base, but I was in no way successful.

I'm also sorry for my bad English, I come from Austria

I thank you in advance (for any questions you can contact me all the time),

    Yours sincerly

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems. See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools Add-ons Extensions Plugins"

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

Firefox is able to load in safe mode, but if I have to browse in safe mode I might as well use Google Chrome because it still works and can have addons. The only thing I can think of that I changed recently was I updated my NVIDIA drivers to version 285.79 Beta yesterday. I had 5.0 for the first crash and updated to 8.0.2 thinking it may fix the problem. I do not have any of the programs that frequently cause crashes.

I have now noticed that this also occurs when clicking on links to PDF files both in safe mode and with the Acrobat plugin loaded. It also occurs on files that are on servers within our corporate firewall seemingly eliminating the firewall as the source of trouble. It even crashes when attempting to load a PDF from my desktop using File | Open File from the menu both in safe mode and with add-ons.

These latest revelations now seem to point to a corporate pushed software update that somehow is running afoul of Firefox. Perhaps an antivirus update. I wonder if McAfee wrote some hack to load itself into a Firefox instance dynamically since Firefox blocked their add-on.

Update: I renamed firefox.exe to something else and guess what?.. no more crashes.

When I installed Firefox and started for the first time it wanted to upgrade an incompatible .NET extension. It hung trying to do the upgrade. Now the only way to run Firefox is in Safe Mode. It crashes immediately on startup in normal mode.

I do have several plug-ins installed, but I think they were done by various software packages I installed outside of Firefox...after it started crashing.

DB:2.79:Firefox Does Not Start (Not Even Safemode) But Uses Cpu mm

I have the latest Firefox 25.0 (and latest Flash 11.9.900.117) on Windows 7 and the following behavior is reproducible. This started not too long ago.

At first when I start Firefox nothing appears no matter how often I restart. However, in the process list I see firefox.exe at 25% CPU, 2x FlashPlayerPlugin_11_9_900_117.exe (0% CPU) and plugincontainer.exe. No matter how often I kill all of them, Firefox wouldn't restart.

The following does also not help in this situation:

Starting in normal Safemode: Firefox opens up a Window but freezes immediately and does not respond. The process list shows the the same processes even though I find FlashPlayer unexpected.
Disable plugincontainer: Same results (just without plugincontainer.exe)
Deinstall Flash: Same results (just without FlashPlayerPlugin)

The following can start Firefox once only:

Starting in Safemode but select "Reset Firefox": Firefox won't start right away, though. Nothing happens and you have to kill the processes. However the very next time you start Firefox the normal way, it works fine (but it shows FlashPlayerPlugin.exe in the Windows process list despite not Tab being open). Unfortunately, after closing Firefox the processes (Firefox, FlashPlayerPlugin) are not removed. I kill them and the trouble with Firefox not starting reappears again.

DB:2.79:Firefox Does Not Start (Not Even Safemode) But Uses Cpu mm

Firefox tries to clear cookies created by plugins (e.g. Flash LSO) in this case and launches extra plugin-container processes. In case Firefox hadn't managed to do this on the previous close down that Firefox tries again on startup if it detects that clearing data had failed (prefs.js: privacy.sanitize.didShutdownSanitize = false)

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Tools Options Advanced General Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

    https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
    https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools Add-ons Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools Add-ons Appearance
Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

    https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
    https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

    (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

Over the past week, Firefox continuously crashes. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the program. I tried restarting the settings back to default mode. I opened Firefox in Safe Mode. All of these did not work. It crashes sometimes only a few seconds after opening and other times a few minutes after opening, but it hasn't been open for more than 5-7 minutes at one time without crashing in the last week.

I ran a crash report, but I'm not sure what to do with it.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    DB:2.77:Firefox Crashes 9f

You could try to make adjustments in the security software (McAfee??, other antivirus, firewall etc.). Windows safe mode bypasses these and other third-party programs and drivers. Firefox requires a local loopback connection to itself, as well as outgoing connections on at least port 80 and 443. You can try deleting all existing instances of Firefox and its related processes/files in all the different configuration modules/areas of the security software like process monitoring, sub/spawned process control, virtualization, HIPS etc., in addition to the security software's main configuration panel. Instead create new fully allowed/trusted rules for Firefox + its related processes in all the different modules/panels - a genuine/original Firefox installer as well as all the installed EXEs (Application) and DLLs (Application extension) are digitally signed by Mozilla Corporation (right-click Properties Digital Signatures). Even otherwise, some security software may also ask again when Firefox and/or its sub processes are started, and you may be able to allow/trust at that time. Please see this.

    AV/Firewalls Configuration

Also, if the OS network stack is corrupt, it could intermittently affect other internet software like Firefox. You can easily reset the network stack to its defaults, but any custom functionality inserted by the security software and other software may get lost/affected. The Windows OS forum would also be helpful.

A distant possibility could be process hijacking OS malware which may affect Firefox functionality, and also confuse the security software in that it isn't able to reliably recognize Firefox for giving appropriate permissions. If the security software provides logging, you could check the logs for hints.

My suggestions: Try reinstalling Firefox 27 again.

This time however leave Firefox 26 for now
(Probably worth replacing that with ESR later if Fx27 still fails)
But do a Custom install of Firefox 27. Choose some other location for the install. Maybe placed adjacent to the standard install and use a folder .../Mozilla-2014/

It is also worth creating a new profile. It is a good idea to use a separate profile for multiple versions of Firefox are in use. It is also worth having disposable profiles as you can then test with them and clear them entirely or otherwise make Firefox start with a new profile. It may be unlikely that profile changes prevent Firefox restarting, but that is something worth testing and ruling out.

Yesterday I was in the middle of browsing when Firefox froze. Each successive time I've had to force quit, even when starting a new session (no prior tabs) and in safe mode. Firefox after a few seconds of opening, even without doing anything (ie. trying to open a page.)

After yesterday, Firefox stopped asking me to submit crash reports, so I'm including one of the ones early on yesterday in the freezing process.

I have about 2 seconds after firefox opens to do anything in it, which is how I quickly copied the helptroubleshooting info (below.) But then the program continued to hang.

    DB:2.76:Firefox Crashes 33

That may be caused by a recent Java update from Apple and should get fixed in Firefox 8.0.1.

After using Adware cleaner (not the first time), I can't start Firefox (not even in Safe Mode). I get the following crash-ID:
    bp-b793cf5d-c3f3-449a-b8a4-16e762121120
Do I have to deinstall and reinstall the programme?

    DB:2.75:Firefox Crashes pk

    Hello,

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

This process will keep bookmarks, history, saved passwords, and addons.

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    Windows:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.

Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!

Please report back to see if this helped you!

    Thank you.

You can check if you have a user.js file in the Firefox profile folder that sets the browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once pref to true.

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

Help Troubleshooting Information Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Note that Windows hides some file extensions by default.

Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see the name without file extension.

You can see the real file type (file extension) in the Properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.

I thought it might have something to do with ver 14.0.1 so I uninstalled it and the maintenance module. (Being the control freak I am, I don't like automatic updates of any kind anyway.) I then loaded version 13.0.1 and the problem disappeared and hasn't shown up again, so from this I can surmise that ver. 14.0.1 might have a problem because I didn't have crashes until yesterday. Admittedly it might have been the interactive logo. In any case after downgrading to ver. 13.0.1, I went into options and disabled auto updates, then set updates to download but notify before installing. Didn't have to change my homepage for the duration of the Olympics. I have to say that after this experience I'm kind of leery of Google. This caution is encouraged by the ghostery add-on that shows just how much tracking Google does. Don't like to be tracked or counted as a statistic, especially when it's all about marketing...oh yes and fodder for the FBI.

DB:2.75:Ichat Crashes After Beginning Video Chat. cc

I installed snow leopard and my iChat ***** now. I use my video chat feature all the time and it has never worked really good. In the past I have had to try like 12 times with 7 restarts to get the thing to connect. Obviously, apple has fixed that problem because now I can connect on the first try every time. The only problem now is that ichat crashes within 30 seconds of starting a video chat every time. Please tell me that there is some fix for this problem. Maybe I am doing this wrong.

DB:2.75:Ichat Crashes After Beginning Video Chat. cc

    Hi JakeThaSnake919,

These logs are read somewhat in reverse.
What is at the top was the last thing to load in the process.
The VideoToolbox holds the Video codecs Quicktime X can now handle.
iChat uses Quicktime to produce both ends of the Video Chat.
viceroy.framework is the part of iChatAgent, an iChat Support app, that handles the interface between iChat and Quicktime.

As you can see part of what the iChatAgent stuff is doing is playing the sound to say a Video Chat is starting.

Could you check which sound you are playing in iChat Menu Preferences Alerts for Video Invite ?
IS it one of the iChat Sounds (Normally the Telephone bell) ?
(I use a few bars sampled from "Purple Haze")
If yours is also a custom sound can you do a Get Info on it and find out the sample rate please ?

    Try changing the Sound choice.

Firefox Crashes Randomly – v7.0.1. Windows 7 Pro 32bit, SP1, Fully Updated – recently reinstalled OS. Flash, Java, etc, all fully updated. All plugins updated. All drivers fully updated. AVG Free edition – fully updated, scans for viruses daily. Malwarebytes installed and recently scanned for spyware/malware, no problems found. All add-ons and extensions fully updated. Manually disabled all add-ons, still crashed.

Starting Firefox in safe mode seems to have alleviated the crashing but completely defeats the purpose of why I use it in the first place.

This has been an ongoing problem since shortly after FF 4 was released and I have resorted to using a portable version of FF 3.6 which has been the most stable.

It seems the crashes occur more often when there are numerous tabs open at the same time

Doesn’t matter what website I’m on, it randomly crashes at any given point in time

    DB:2.75:Firefox Crashes am

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

    https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools Add-ons Extensions Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Crashes upon first startup, only proceeds if I choose safe mode. I have tried resetting FireFox to no avail.

    DB:2.74:Firefox Crashes ma

In safe mode, Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration.

    Click the menu button

    and select Options
In the Firefox Options window, click the Advanced tab, then select General.
In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
Now, close Firefox, wait a few seconds, and then start it normally. Does that allow Firefox to open properly?

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

If that doesn't fix your problems, please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View Arrange Icons by Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

    Thanks in advance!
