DB:3.61:Merge Clips And Multicam: Does Syncing By Audio Work At All? pa

    Hi,

I just upgraded to Premiere CC and I'm a bit(very) dissapointed. One of the reasons why we upgraded was the possiblity to sync audio and video within Premiere. We use Plural eyes quite extensively but I'd love to be able to do everything within Premiere.

However I've tried to Sync a few video clips (DSLR with Rode top mic) with a few audio clips (from audio recorder) and the result is always off. Sometimes by a few seconds, sometimes by less and sometimes Premiere wont even consider some of the clips......

I've tried the syncing through the Multicam feature or through the 'merge clips' option to no avail......I mean, this is really bad from Adobe! how can it be so faulty? Is there something I'm missing?

    Back to Plural Eyes then.....

    cheers

DB:3.61:Merge Clips And Multicam: Does Syncing By Audio Work At All? pa

I can't sync anything - using AV clips or Roland recorder audio clips - doing it exactly the way the adobe tutorial says. Makes no difference whether I'm using Multicam merger, or merely audio syncing two clips on the timeline - no go. I upgraded mostly for this feature. Only bought CC a couple of days ago, so I'm absolutely about to bail on this upgrade.

I'm fishing for suggestions on how to sync audio and video in iMovie. I have a series of video clips and an audio track, and would like them synced at certain points in time. The sync points are in the middle of the clips, hence Snap to Beat Marker feature is of limited help. The alignment I'm after is:audio: |-------+------------+----------+----|clip1: |----------+------|clip2: |-------+------|clip3: |----+---------|The main concern is to sync on the '+', I can adjust the boundaries betwen clips/audio later. Ideally, once the markers are set, I could reorder the clips. I would be happy with temporary gaps in video (to be filled in later), but if that's problematic, I can make sure there's always be enough extra footage to avoid the gaps.audio: |-------+------------+----------+----|clip2: |-------+-----|clip3: |----+---------|clip1: |----------+------|gap (potential): |-|
    Any suggestions welcome, many thanks!

Cheers AppleMan1958. Comment (or chapter?) markers definitely help in syncing video and audio, though I see no way to auto align comment and beat markers, nor to keep them "snapped" together. Makes it hard to replace video clips in the middle of the audio... Might give Final Cut Pro a go, they do have a 30 day trial.

I just finished editing a video in which I detached and removed all of the original in-camera audio (clip by clip) and added an AAC music track to play over the whole video. I've produced several videos like this before without any trouble. But this time for some reason "phantom" audio from the original clips are popping up in the output. When I play the movie in the iMovie '09 viewer everything is fine. But when I export it these bits of video are still there. I went back through and verified that all of the clips are muted. Yet I cannot find where this remnant audio is coming from. Stranger still is that the audio that is playing is not matched up with the clips it came from. Am I doing something wrong? Is this a glitch or a known issue since the last update?

An export bug exists in the current version of the app. The solution was a work-around until a fix is pushed out.

Greetings. I need some additional help with audio syncing. Again, all my searches give me hundreds of web pages involving people with ourt of sync audio trouble and that is not my issue.

What I need is help syncing audio with the takes I want to use in editing. I want the entire take to have the shrill camera audio replaced with the audio recorded separately and then from then on, that is the only audio linked to that entire take/clip/file.

Now I can put a DSLR clip into my timeline, say Scene01_Take08. Camera audio is there with it. I can then take the audio recorded for that take and put it in the timeline and get it synced up to the video and delete the camera audio. Okay, cool. But it's just synced in the timeline. It's not synced to the original take/file replacing the in camera audio.

    Is this making sense?

What I need to do is sync audio for all the takes I know I am going to edit with and have no more camera audio.

For one scene we have a back and forth, two angles and each angle had eight takes. One angle I am going to use takes 5 and 7. The other takes 5, 6 and 7. So I want to sync the audio to those clips. No need to sync audio to takes I will not use.

But I only know how to drag stuff into the timeline and sync audio there. That won't sync it and marry it to the original clip so that whenever I decide to place a take into my Source Window, the newly sinked audio is in there and NOT the camera audio.

So maybe I am unaware of a step that I need to take?

Do I need to open each take in a different program and do something?

Hopefully I am being clear enough and I am very sory if there ia FAQ on this. I just have not found it.

    Thanks, all.

I was facing the same problem on my AVCHD clips as well. And here is what I found. PluralEyes

It is a stand along program that syncs audio to your camera recorded audio very fast and works 100%. Check it out.

It would be great if Adobe integrates someting like this into premiere and audition junction.

I already know how to go about separating (un-syncing) audio from video once a clip is placed into a sequence. What I'm wondering is if there's a non-convoluted way to pull the audio from a video clip before inserting it into the timeline (and placing it in the browser with other project assets) so that it can be used independent of the clip.

For example, let's say I've logged a bunch of clips from a recent training class I conducted. There are audio segments of some of those clips I might want to insert - independent of their source footage - into the opening or closing title sequence of the project. How do I go about easily extracting that audio from the clip while it's in the browser or viewer so that I can drag it into the sequence timeline when I choose?

Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions.

I also worked on a TV show where we did this for three seasons with no problems. Now what's happening is many of the clips are going out of sync, and staying out of sync. Then if I cut a piece of one of the clips (now in the viewer) into a new timeline. it will cut in with video and audio edits out of line. Weird!!! I'm going on at length about this, but maybe this rings a bell with someone else?? I've done the usual stuff for maintenance, like trashing preferences and rebuilding permissions....

IS there a way to lock video clips so that - at all costs - they stay in the same place? I've been trying to edit this video and every time I mess with a clip EVERYTHING after it gets moved all over the place. This is a music video project so syncing it up is important and time consuming.

I found a way to lock an audio clip but that doesn't seem to help me - I need to make certain video clips unmovable.

    I've searched but no cigar.

    DB:3.24:Locking Video Clips 9z

"..if you have to sync video to audio for a long movie like 20+ minutes. It would be 10 seconds of inserting a clip and half an hour of realigning everything that comes after it for every single edit.."

It's always best to 'Extract' all the audio from the various clips, and slot together all the audio first. That makes a 'bed' onto which you can then drop the video clips.

If the video clips are each slightly longer than you need, you can drop all the video clips into their rough positions, then "fine trim" them, using the 'drag-the-ends-of-each-clip' "direct trimming" method - described in iMovie's Help items under "Fine Tuning" the video.

Then you just need to decide how long each transition should be, and allow that same amount extra on the end, and start, of each clip, by 'pulling out' the ends which you may have 'pulled tighter', using that 'direct trimming' capability.

Then just apply the transitions. That should make everything fit pretty much exactly!

You can also do it by just counting minutes, seconds and frames, and allowing the appropriate extra seconds and frames on the ends of clips, to allow for that footage being "eaten up" and overlapped during the transitions.

However, as Matthew (I think) pointed out; sometimes - if editing NTSC video - just counting seconds frames may lead to sync being out by a frame or two after a minute. [This is because NTSC uses "drop-frame" timecode, in which a few frame numbers are ignored every few minutes.] So the "direct trimming" method may be more accurate.

Once you've done it a few times, it becomes second nature..

"..Do the iMovie creators think that everyone will edit their movie together entirely sequentially from beginning to end and then never have to go back and change anything?.."

Erm, you can use 'placeholders' by just making a still frame from anything, then adjusting the length of that still (by typing-in a new duration). Or you can drag the end of a clip to a new position, automatically creating a black 'slug' of the right length to fill the intervening space. You can then chop away lengths of this blank 'slug' as you drop in similar lengths of clips which you want to occupy that 'blank' space.

"..go back and change anything?.." ..That's what the 'Advanced''Paste Over at Playhead' feature is for!

On every example I've seen of this, syncronizing two clips creates a compound clip which would be great, but when I choose syncronize clip, it just creates a new clip of the video with both audio files apart of the video. It's not a compound clip at all, it's just a video file with two audio channels, one with the cameras audio, the other with the Zoom H1 audio. When I go to shut off the cameras audio channel and just leave the Zoom H1 audio, my video starts to skip and just goes black, yet the audio plays fine...I guess I'm just looking for help, is there something wrong that I am doing when I am trying to sync these clips? Are there certain file settings that I should have? My video is recorded in 1080p with 24fps, the audio is recorded in WAV format. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Thanks for your reply and help however, after spending 5 hours googling trying to find the answer, i found a way to fix this. If any-one reading this has the same problem this completely fixes it and is so easy, takes seconds to do.I noticed that the audio sync was fine when I viewed in Quicktime 7, but not in iMovie. I also noticed there was a small indicator on the clips in iMovie notating that the source clips were in 17 fps, not 30 fps. This is odd because I recorded the clips using the FaceTime HD camera right into iMovie and it never gave me the option for framerate on the recording. Viewing the source video (in Finder if you recorded straight into imovie)Using MPEG Streamclip (free video converter) conver the source video clip to a Quicktime .mov at 30 fps and using the Apple Intermediate Codec and all the audio sync issues will fix. Don't have to optimize, detach, or - most importantly - re-edit anything. Apple's editing systems love Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC), I don't know why they don't import in this codec by default.** Download MPEG Streamclip from http://www.squared5.com/

    DB:3.16:Imported Mpeg-4 Clips To Imovie08 Arrive Without Audio x1

Can you give me a few tips about using this kind of software?

iSquint is probably the easiest to use of those mentioned but is limited to MPEG4/AAC (default) or H.264/AAC output. Both are compatible with iMovie '08. If you have several files to convert, simply drop them to "Batch" window and press start to begin conversion to MPEG4/AAC files. This codec is very fast but requires 2.0-2.5 times the data rate of a H.264/AAC file for the same level of quaity. Use the MPEG4/AAC option if conversion speed is more important than creating smaller files. Checking the H.264 box switches to the H.264/AAC mode. Use the "Optimize for TV" option for VGA (640x480) files for iMovie '08 SD editing.

When you become more accustomed to the application you may wish to try customizing your settings using the "Advanced" window option. Increasing the video data rate may improve the video quality. (Actually, what you are doing here is preventing the loss of addition detail during conversions.) You may also wish to adjust the "Quality" Factor slider along with increases in the video data rate. It is probably best to leave the audio settings in their default setting.

The question/issue I have..is that when I get my OMF exported for my sound editor, will this screw anything up, since on the project file, it doesn't use the original audio file, but the one that was merged. And in the project list, I don't even need to have the original audio file listed, since it's already been merged into a clip, which I used in the project. I know it's the same file used, but will it mess anything up since a merged clip audio was used instead of just dragging the original track onto the timeline?

I recently directed a music video with dual-system sound, so the source video has an empty audio track. Im trying to figure out the best way to sync the performances, then create a multi-cam sequence from those clips.
My thought was this: I would sync the clips to the song playback the old fashioned way, using the slate. Once I had the song synced up to the performance, I would link the audio to the video clip. Then I would create a multi-cam sequence by syncing the audio from the newly merged clips. Seemed to be working perfectly, but then when I tried to create a multicam sequence from the newly merged clips, Premiere wouldnt let me (the option is greyed out).
My next thought was then to tweak the in-points on the clips so that they all started exactly when the music started. Then I would pull them into a bin and make a multi-cam sequence out of them using the in-points as the reference. But for some reason because I deleted the original empty audio track from the clip, Premiere would not allow me to drag the new clip into its own bin.

Curious if anyone has a proficient way to do this. Im sure there but be a workflow Im not aware of, but no matter the route I take Premiere is putting up roadblocks. Thanks.

For anyone else having this problem, however, I did find an interesting hack/workaround. One thing I do love about the Premiere multi-cam is how much you can tweak it once it's been created. So to "solve" my problem, I picked any two random clips in a bin and selected "Create multi-cam source sequence". Once the multi-cam sequence was made, I right-clicked the sequence and selected "Open in Timeline". Once the sequence was opened in the timeline, I copy/pasted all my synced dual-system sound clips into the multi-cam sequence. Then I deleted the two original "slug" clips I used to make the sequence, and manually arranged the dual-system clips in the timeline to create a functioning multi-cam. So this essentially tricked Premiere into making a multi-cam sequence with the clips from which it was initially telling me it couldn't make a multi-cam sequence. Boo-ya.

Sorry if this sound a little laborious and/or confusing, but workarounds often are. The bottom line is that once it was done it worked, so I'm up and editing again. Hope this might help others.

I'm currently editing a 3D movie using Apple ProRes 422 (SQ) QT video files. I'm syncing and linking them to separate audio wave files on the time line and then creating new video and audio clips in the browser.

When I go into dynamic trimming with these master clips in the time line to match action I can't seem to see in the viewer or the canvas what I'm matching to. Also, when I set a new edit point the playhead jumps to the another point in the canvas.

Does FCP 6 have a bug using this work flow to trim with?

i'm editing a movie using ProRes 422 (SQ) QT files that have been synced with audio, and when I go to use the trim tool, lately I've been having what sounds like the same problem.

I go into dynamic trimming, but when I add frames to one side, often the edit point skips to an entirely different place in the timeline. It seems to be happening more and more and has basically rendered the trim tool useless.

    Hi Folks,

My Keynote presentation has URLS - IMAGES 3 video clips (.AVI .MPG format)... now the presentation works fine when you press play in KeyNote - however when I export I do not hear any audio for my video clips.

I have no idea why... maybe because of the video format I have? But somehow I don't think that's the issue...

Also when im exporting to QT i make sure "To include the slideshow soundtrack or the recorded audio, select the Audio checkbox."

So im stuck here and Im wondering if someone can give me a hand please. Also I'm having no luck with exporting to FLASH in terms of hearing the audio from the video clips...

The Video plays just no audio

    anyone?
    Thanks,

DB:3.12:Export To Qt Movie: Cannot Hear Audio dp

My experience: with regards to MPEG-1, I think it's a Quicktime issue. Apple it seems has never been nuts about MPEG-1, even when early versions of the Quicktime Player explicitly allowed MPEG-1 editing, it was just setting reference points, and you'd have to include the ENTIRE MPEG-1 file with every saved edit. It's the muxing that seems to gum up the QT machine.

With regards to Keynote and audio in general, I am speculating: Keynote was acquired from another company, yes? Or was a NeXT STEP app?? It may have been a different beast originally, maybe not tied as tightly to the Quicktime engine, but it offers so many other attractive attributes that maybe Apple decided early on that they would just play catch-up and slowly add features as time and engineering allowed.

    Hi Friends -

Definitely, I am newbie for - editing in this application (Adobe Premier CS6) .

My idea is to sync audio and video clip - 'based on clip markers' or 'based on Audio wave' .

But, in my machine, I dont see option to 'add clip markers' (in Marker Menu) for these clips, which are supposed to merge. And, coming 'based on Audio wave' - I dont even see those options, when I select (both clips to be merged) and choose merge.

Am I missing any setting - Do I need to have any additional plugins for that? Can anyone pls. help regarding that.

    Thanks in advance.

The audio option wasn't added until Premiere Pro CC.

You can set clip markers in the Source Monitor with the M key.

I have a mountain of audio and video clips, but with no rhyme or reason to the file name, no timecode, no slates, just waveforms. I have a rough cut of a few clips using on-camera audio. I also recorded with a separate audio recorder. I want to somehow link the secondary audio to the primary audio and the source video clips, so that the secondary audio will be added to the rough cut without me having to go and re-sync each edit with the corresponding secondary audio. Is it possible to sync additional audio to a source file and have it reflected in an edited sequence?

    DB:3.07:Linking/Syncing Audio And Video 8c

What you propose is a lot of un necessary work!

How would you propose maintaining synch as well as eliminating a generation loss with what you propose?

PPRO (or any NLE) will work absolutely fine with multiple audio tracks. ( agreed ?)

Because the editor has to synch the external ( replacement) audio clips to the existing video in the timeline anyway by whatever workflow the editor deems workeable...why not just do that and continue on editing.

Mute the original track ( do not delete it) and work with the Original video and the New audio. ( This is basic 101 double system editing practice).

When I export, all video, images and transitions are present in the mov file but none of the audio, ever. I have tried several different export presets and have always made sure to include Video and Audio but none of the resultant quicktime movies have any audio. All audio is present and plays fine when I am working in Motion 4. TIA for any input and assistance.

Thank your Patrick for you input and questions. It turns out that I was being a complete newbie. In previously exporting from other packages I could export to a point that I was content with to view my progress without stutter. Obviously this is not the case with FCS tools. When I changed the play range to my completed boundaries and did an export of that play range the audio was there, without issue.

Thanks again for the pointer on FCP being the hub of the suite. I will change my under development work flow.

    Hello,

Last week I've recorded some footage and now I would like to edit this, but I'm not sure how to create an appropriate workflow. So I was wondering if some of you could advice me.

    My ideal situation will be:
Syncing audioRe-use it as 'normal' clips (which means trim editor - in out point - in/out point)Edit my storyDo some gradingMastering audio in AuditionEt cetera.

    The issue:

I've have multiple clips from my 7D with synced audio AND better quality recorded audio on a separate device. Most of the time I can remove the whole 'synced version' audio and replace it with the better quality audio available. Actually sometimes shot was that wide the boom operator couldn't boom all characters and want a combination of the audio from the 7D and the separate audio.

Well, so far no problem. I just synced the separate audio and cut the pieces from the 7D-audio away which I didn't want to use. After that I've selected al my clips and tried to merge it, but this option is disabled and, besides that, even linking is impossible. So my desired workflow is already stuck here. How can I accomplish this?

And I was wondering if I eventually merge those clips will I keep my separate tracks (one video and two audio, in this case) when I export to Audition? So that I can modify different clips differently?

Long story for short question: What is the 'best' workflow for syncing three-point-edit grading audio mastering, in Premiere Pro CS6?

    Looking forward to some advice!

    Yours sincerely,

    Jason -

DB:3.06:Trouble With Audio Coming Out Of Sync a3

All sorts of things you can do.
Easiest fix is just to run down your timeline and every few minutes snip the audio and move it back into sync.

    Now after that;""
Qe have no idea what your process was. We assume you're editing in Final Cut. How did you import your footage? What format is it in the browser?
what are the settings of your timeline? Look at the sequence settings.

Here's an interesting blog by Alfred C Chen from Sun Microsystems entitled "My Corrupt iMovie Project":
    http://blogs.sun.com/alfredc/entry/mycorrupt_imovieproject

Particularly look at the 5 steps he went through with Apple technical support, listed at the end of his article. This may be helpful, but try at your own risk!

Yes, I was surprised that you "lost" your Projects and Events after iMovie created the new preference file. That is unexpected behaviour - perhaps there are some unusual circumstances prevailing in your case. Even re-installing iMovie shouldn't cause you to "lose" your existing work. Unless you've moved (or originally saved) them to another drive, Events are stored in your Home folder MoviesiMovie Events. Likewise, Projects are stored in MoviesiMovie Projects. When newly installed, iMovie should automatically see these Events and Projects, as it will look for them in your Home folder and at the root level of any connected drives. Similarly, it should look for movies in iPhoto and create thumbnails in the item "iPhoto Videos" at the top of your Events list.

Perhaps you have moved your Events and Projects to some other location, other than those I've mentioned here. That's possibly why iMovie is not seeing them after newly creating the preference file - it expects to find them in the designated locations.

The Problem is when I broke the clips up for each scene and take (like I usually do) and set my IN on the clapper and my IN on the audio file for that take at the sound of the clap and go to merge clips on IN points. The clip merges but not at the points I told it to. The audio gets shifted down or up by a good few seconds.

    Why is this happening?

When I take the footage with the same IN mark and put it on the time line and the Audio with he same IN mark and put it on the time line it matches up. But not when I merge clips. I cant think what Im doing wrong if anything since this is the first time I have had this issue.

    Thanks to all!

Hold down "ALT" key first then select the first audio clip in the chain of video clips to Delete. 2. Hold down " Shift + Alt " keys together and click right mouse button on all audio clips to be deleted one by one. Make sure only audio clips are selected. 3. Then release ALT+Shift keys and then click right mouse button and select "Clear" from pull down menu to Delete all selected audio clips on the time line. This method works very well for me. DB:3.00:Seeking Sequence Timeline Help, Please 97

After some CC update -- the audio tracks of video clips aren't staying connected to the video clips in the Premiere Pro CC sequence timeline. Meaning, if I grab a video clip in the sequence timeline and move it somewhere or cut it -- the corresponding audio track just sits there and doesn't move or get edited. This results in a new nightmare of having to move the audio and video clips separately on the sequence timeline. Relative to previous versions of Premiere -- I'd described this problem as all audio tracks not linked to their corresponding video clip.

Yes, they're all "linked." That appears to have no effect.

I'm assuming some new feature was added that I don't understand -- and I'm very, very grateful if anyone can tell me how to solve this issue and get back to the wonderful world of truly linked video-audio clips.

Figured out that this happens if you import your assetts into premiere. Create a sequence. Export an XML from Premiere to PluralEyes. Sync it. Create an XML for Premiere and then import it into Premiere.

It works properly if you start in PluralEyes with your assetts and then Impot the synced XML into Premiere. Its a shorter and smarter way to do it anyway. I was trying to do it the way I used to on PC.

Some of the audio coming in on the Master tapes needs to be replaced with backup audio. So, I'm syncing the video with the backup audio, linking the two and dragging the linked clips over to the browser to create a new Master Clip.

I've been experiencing some weird sync issues with the Trim Edit Window with these new clips that I THINK are happening because the video timecode doesn't match the audio timecode. I tried adding an auxiliary timecode to the audio tracks that matched the video TC, but the only TC showing up on the window overlays is the source TC.

    DB:2.99:Merge Clips Question ss

Have read the manual and searched the forums but can't work this out.

Basically I'm syncing double system audio and creating merged clips. As the video is HDV all the shots are already seperate clips. However the audio files are 1 hour long clips (transfered from DAT). Now, using the timeline technique to merge the clips, I cut out only the audio I need for each shot and merge it with the video. However the resulting clips contain ALL 1 hour of the audio (with in and out points around the video, that is most video shots are about 30 sec). This doesn't work for me since I want only the length of the shot on the playback bar of the preview window to be as long as only that shot is, for easy navigation in the shot. Even if I cut and delete the extra audio on the timeline, it still gives me all 1 hour of audio on the merged clip... how can I delete this unwanted audio on each clip? Not sure if I'm explaining this clearly. I have 43 hours and potentially thousands of shots, so individually exporting each and every merged clip as it's own shot is not at all doable from a time and hard drive space perspective. Thanks!

    DB:2.99:Merge Clips Question ss

Hi Andy, thanks again. I tried it (made sure the reel names were the same for both audio and video) and it does indeed create a subclip of only the portion that was in the timeline, but the audio and video are still misaligned, out of sync. Have tried with multiple clips and still the same result.

Open the Event file(s) with the QT Player and check the "Inspector" window to make sure the file, as imported to iMovie '08, still has its audio track in tact. If it does and the missing audio is limited to scrubbing Event files, check the audio switch under the preview window to see if it is off. If no audio is present in normal playback/preview mode, then thumbnails could be bad and you might try re-thumbnailing the events. If the problem is on the project side, try duplicating the project and see if the duplicate has sound. If you still don't have audio, try trimming the duplicate project to a very short sequence and exporting it to see if the output has audio. This assumes you have audio everywhere else and it is not a system wide problem like muting, system sample rate switched to a different setting, system volume turned down, etc...

Dropping the various audio clips of the various scenes into the timeline and I keep getting clicks between the audio clips upon playback and export. There are no empty frames between the clips, nor any overlapping clips. Even looping a single audio clip in Audition results in a click at the beginning of each clip. In either PP or Audition the clicks are only audible when playing normal speed. Scrub through the timeline with the arrow keys and the clicks are not present.

Ramping up/down the gain at the head/tail of the files still results in clicks between the clips. Doesn't matter if the clips are in the same track. It seems to be a file access issue and not an actual audio track sound, except that when I export the movie the clicks become part of the audio track of the exported movie. Except for these audio clicks everything is working perfectly.

Audio is encoded in samples per second (e.g. 48000) and video is played back in frames per second (e.g. 24). There are significantly more audio samples than there are individual video frames and Premiere cuts to the nearest video frame, so there may be instances where the cut point occurs in the middle of a very short sound that you would have barely noticed in the full-length recording.

This is a problem I have experienced in all NLEs; it is not just limited to Premiere. The easiest way of solving it is to add a short cross-fade at the beginning of the audio clip.

    Hi there,

When syncing by audio, what's happening when I offset the audio frames from the video frames?

I was looking around for official documentation on this, but couldn't find any.

I'm thrilled that the new Premiere Pro CC (7.0.0) can sync by audio. I can cut out PluralEyes from my workflow entirely. I'd just like to know what's happening when I modify the numerical value for "Offset audio by _ video frames" when I generate a new multi-camera source sequence.

Operators of older DSLRs, like the T2i, 5D Mk II, and 7D, know that these cameras' own internal audio tracks are out of sync with their video, usually having their video tracks lag behind their audio tracks by a single frame or two, depending on the camera.

Does this feature actually offset video and audio within a clip that has its audio and video tracks linked? Does it look for isolated audio tracks that have no video associated with them and simply offset those from the video clips that do have audio? I noticed that isolated audio tracks are automatically moved to A1 and are soloed, so they seem to have special priority.

Also, which direction does the offset move the tracks? I'm assuming I can put in positive or negative values and get different results.

    Please help!

Sure, absolutely. Glad to know this information was helpful for you.

Here's the original forum thread that corroborated my suspicion, when I noticed it in my own 5D Mark II footage: Canon 5D Mk II Clap-Board Audio Sync Issue : Canon EOS DSLR

What I've learned is that, even after having upgraded to using frame-accurate cameras and others systems with SMPTE timecode, you should always slate, even just as backup. If it was good enough for 1920s talkies, it's good enough for us now.

    Best,

You have just described the classic 24 fps vs 23.978 fps problem.

If your video was 24 fps and you have audio at 23.976 - (or vice versa) you end up with a .01% discrepancy.

The answer is to have both items at the same frame rate and have FCP interpret them correctly.

Of course, it is still possible to have drift without the camera and audio recorder locked together.

    Hello,

I'm new to Premiere as a whole and have been having difficulty moving clips from one project to another. When I cut and paste and when I use the Import tool to import a project or timeline, everything appears normal until I close and reopen the project. When I do that, the audio files from any clips transferred this way are missing; they are now brown rather than the default blue on the timeline and while their path is available, the audio peaks are completely flat.

This is a very troubling error, because you can do a lot of work after importing these clips only to start up Premiere the next day and find that your audio is missing. All of the video from the imported or pasted clips is there, so why can't it sort out the audio?

Most of these audio files are .mts AVCHD files from a Sony FS100, but recently this error also happened to a clip I edited in Audition, so this isn't just a problem Premiere has syncing up AVCHD audio.

    I'm using Premiere CS6 6.0.3 on Windows 7 Professional.

Thank you for any support you can provide.

Those + and - figures are the number of Frames, that the Audio and Video differ from 0 (sync), for muxed files, i.e. files containing both an Audio and Video Stream.

Glad that it worked - finally.

When I first encountered the issue, it came about long after the Copy/Paste operation. Initially, that seemed to work fine. I had read that others had experienced issues with Copy/Paste, but I thought that I was "home free." I edited most of a morning, Rendering often, as I was doing a lot of Pan Zoom animations. Still working fine. At one Render (just like the dozen, or so before), all Audio went "flat-line." In my case, I just manually Re-linked the Audio, but someone (Jeff Bellune, IIRC), pointed out the Match Frame operation. Next time that it happened, his suggestion worked fine, and saved me time. Why things worked for so long, in my case, then suddenly fritzed up, I cannot imagine.

    Good luck,

    Hunt

    DB:2.97:Transition Problems... Help!!! 9d

OK, here's the deal. I'm editing a movie in iMovie, shot from 3 different cameras, at different angles. I have all the clips imported, and the "main" camera video in my timeline. I have extracted the audio from the main angle for use as the master audio, and I am clipping and inserting clips from the different cameras, syncing to the extracted master audio. So far so good.

The problem comes when I add transitions. I want to use cross desolve for the most part to fade cleanly from one ange to the other. Simple concept, right? So I split the video in each clip at the correct place, remove the piece of video from the mai camera, and replace it with the clip of the same length from camera 2. All is well. When I ad the transition, however, it totally messes up my timeline. I'm not concerned with garbled audio, I just want the video to sync with the extracted audio. But every time I ad a transition, it shortens my video.

Reading Apple's "help", they say "simply make your clip longer". That obviously is very little help when I have two clips that need to fit together at a precise second, which I have over 200 of in this file. What can I do here? Is there a fix, or maybe a third-party transition that doesn't screw up our clips the way Apple's seems to? Please help. I'm in a major time crunch!

    DB:2.97:Transition Problems... Help!!! 9d

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.

See the hints here in Dan's invaluable "Unofficial iMovie FAQ".

Essentially, in all transitions except 'Overlap', the entire movie will be shortened by the length of transition you apply, because that length will be used in laying the beginning of one clip on top of the end of the previous one.

So if you choose a 3-second transition, 3 secs of the start of the 2nd clip will be overlaid on top of the last 3 seconds of the preceding clip. 3 seconds running time will thus be "lost" or removed from the overall running time.

The effect is that 3 secs of sync will be lost from the start of the 2nd clip.

So if you trimmed the 2nd clip with 3 seconds of extra (sacrificial) material at its start, before laying it over the end of the 1st clip, those extra 3 secs would get "eaten up" in the transition, and the 2nd clip would remain in sync with the audio.

You simply have to decide FIRST, before even trimming the clips, exactly how long you want for the particular transition, and then leave that extra amount at the start of the "incoming" clip.

DB:2.96:Remove Audio From Multiple Video Clips In Time Line j1

    Hi

I would like to remove audio clips from all video clips in time line to insert new audio clips for exisiting video clips. I can do this for a single clip. But do not know how to do it for multiple of video clips in the time line. Ur help is much appreciated. Thx.

DB:2.96:Remove Audio From Multiple Video Clips In Time Line j1

There are a couple of ways to accomplish this. I like just going to WindowAudio Mixer, and Mute that Audio Track. Then, place the new Audio on another Track (not Muted).

Another way would be to lock the Video Tracks, and just drag around the Audio streams on their Track, and Delete. Note: this does nothing to the Audio in the original files and only affects the Instances of them in the Timeline - the originals are untouched.

    Good luck,

    Hunt

DB:2.96:6 Frame Audio Sync Issue With Fcp 6.0.5 79

I've had something crop up on my system for the last 4 projects I have worked on. Clips are capturing fine into Final Cut, but when I play them back, they are exactly 6 frames off in sync. This happens to all clips that I work with. If I move the audio tracks 6 frames to the right, things sync back up, but I don't understand why this is happening. I've checked my capture settings and the audio/video sync box is checked in the user settings. Anyone have an idea what is making FCP lose sync on my clips?

Has anyone worked out how to sync audio and video within Premiere Pro but have the Audio stay fixed on the timeline and the video move? Every way I try it Premiere Pro insists on moving the audio. Locking the track does not work as you cannot select the audio within it to Sync with.

I have a music video shoot with 14 camera angles used on the lead singer (don't ask me why). Multi-camera editing is not an option as there are too many sources for my brand new MacbookPro to handle. I think I would need the computer from Superman II to edit that many clips together.

What I am doing is syncing the first clip, the one Im going to use as the baseline fall back shot and then I need to sync other clips onto the timeline. However Premiere Pro insists on moving the audio to fit with the video not visa-versa.

    Any help would be appreciated.

DB:2.95:Syncing Two Clips To One Audio Track ax

I am shooting an interview with two cameras; one camera is connected to a lapel mic, which is the main source of audio. To synchronize the second camera with the audio of the first camera I clap my hands loudly to cause a spike in the audio of both devices as a guideline to where I should "mark in" the clips; I know it is probably amateurish, but it works...usually. In this instance, when I try to "mark in" at the same points using FCP I am unable to set at the exact fraction of a second, resulting in one piece of footage 1/4th of a second ahead of the other.
Is there a way to adjust the audio to be editable at 1/60 of a second (current setting is 1/30 of a second) or a recommended method of synchronizing two video clips to one audio track?
    Thanks!

DB:2.95:Syncing Two Clips To One Audio Track ax

    Update:
I just noticed that the two clips are synchronized at the beginning of the 25 minute video footage, but begin to de-sync about 1/4 to 1/2 of the way through the footage.

DB:2.94:Audio Problems W/ Dvd Burned kj

    I am using iDVD 6.0.4.

I created a DVD containing two movie clips from iMovie HD, and several .avi files. When previewed in iDVD, all movie clips play normally. When burned to disk (using DVD+R media), the audio for the long movie from iMovie (which contains audio from the actual video plus songs inserted from iMovie) is missing. However, all other audio tracks for other video clips and menus are present.

I tried removing the QuickTime components as recommended in one of the Troubleshooting guides, and this DVD had the same issue, PLUS the video from the short .avi files is missing.

    Help!

DB:2.94:Audio Problems W/ Dvd Burned kj

Do your basic deleting of iDVD preferences and then do a permissions repair. To delete preferences, close iDVD and trash the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist found in User (the house icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app found in HD/Applications/Utilities. In the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window select your hard drive icon and then click on repair permissions. Takes about 3 minutes to repair. Then relaunch iDVD and see if you still have the problem. iDVD will recreate the .plist file that you deleted.

If that doesn't work, it seems to me that if all other clips play audio except for that one clip, then there is something wrong with that one clip. I would run it through Streamclip and convert to aiff.

You could also launch your iDVD project in a different account and see if that makes a difference.

I've been importing video for the past week. The video has played back with no issues. Upon my latest reopen, I've been unable to get any sound out of my videos. The video indicator under the preview screen (upper left) does not reflect sounds. I hear all other audio on my PC with no issue.

What happened to my audio on my tracks?!

DB:2.94:Audio Lost On All Imported Clips za

I called Applecare about this a few weeks ago. We were able to confirm that there is a limit to how many hours/size of videos that can be stored in an event. If the events are kept smaller than you won't see the issue.

THIS IS A BUG and I have no idea confidence that the tech is reporting it through the support chain properly.

I experienced similar glitches in Keynote 4.0.1/4.0.2 on a new MacBook Pro with the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT.

Try making your presentation and Quicktime movie the same size.
It seems the Nvidia card does not like the Quicktime to be scaled in Keynote.
    This solved it for me.

This suggestion is also posted in "Glitching Quicktime movies in Keynote. Nvidia problem" message section.

DB:2.94:Why Did My Audio Sync Up Better In Imovie Than Fcp? 1j

    Hi,

I started on a project in iMovie HD, then realized that FCP is probably the better way to go (ability to crop clips and maintain corresponding audio).

But in FCP, the audio is out of sync, and I can get it only to within 1 frame, while in iMovie everything synced up fine. Same aiff file.

So... is there a way in iMovie HD to crop a clip with audio that is already locked to the playhead, and have the audio crop along with the video, or do I have to manually crop the audio and re-sync it with the video? Eventually on the dvd, I want to have short (3-5 minute) samples of the clips play first, then the full versions of the clips, and I don't want to spend hours re-syncing the audio with the short clips.

    Thanks!

When both video clips are on the timeline filmed with two cameras to get different angles, is there a a keyboard shortcut to move either clip one frame at a time, or while listening to the audio a way to move the clips incremently until both videos are in sync. Some of the filming I used a 'clap' method, but wasn't able to always do this. Basically I think I am asking for fine adjustments along the timeline via the keyboard, frame by frame.

    Thanks Michel, I didn't know that !
Well, I checked and found that alt-shift-right_arrow works as shift-dot (5 frames to the right), and so alt-shift-left_arrow as shift-comma... too many ways to do the same thing !

Is there a way to move all audio tracks directly under their linked video file? doing a music video and would like to keep better track of syncing.. the audio and video tracks are seperated its driving me crazy.. normaly when working in vegas i would leave the audio file with its video file to maintain syncing then once everything is synced i seperate audio tracks from video tracks like premier default is... but how do i freely move the audio tracks directly under their linked video tracks.

    Hey everyone,

something interesting happened to me while syncing video and audio files in Final Cut Pro 6.0.4. Just wanted to ask if there's any workaround for it:

I have an HDV source clip (video + two tracks of audio). One audio track contains timecode information sent to the HDV camera via a Lockit device. Sound was captured seperately using Ambience's 744T HD recorder.

I use Video Toolshed's FCPaux TC Reader to write the TC information from the audio track into FCP's AUX1 timecode track, then sync video and audio with the "Merge Clips" command via AUX timecode.

Everything's fine except for the fact that FCP creates a subclip with 16-bit audio (like the HDV source), not using the 24-bit audio sample from the 744T audio clips. Is there any way to work around this except dragging the video with AUX TC to the timeline, stripping it of its audio, dragging it back to the Browser, then syncing it?!

    Thanks in advance,
    Lasse
