So here is the scenario:since April we have run a Windows Server 2008, new build/new machine, with SQLExpress 2005 being used for one application. Backup is done by the Windows Server Backup - full backup every night to a dedicated disk.As far as I know, SQLExpress 2005 service was always running.  Note however, the 1 app does NOT run at night, so while the SQL service may have been running, nothing is going on.  In this scenario, Backup ran perfectly every night.About a week ago, I installed SQLExpress 2008.  So both services now run on automatic.  I changed the app  to use SQL Express 2008. All tested well.Until that is, I find that the backup fails every night -  here is the wrror:Backup started at (this morning at 4 am)failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes withthe following error code: 2155348001. Event ID 521.If I stop both SQLExpress services, the backup runs fine.  There are no apps running - the Event Log is empty of SQL messages.  At one point the SQL report writer was running, so I stopped that.  Why does VSS cause the backup to fail,  and what should I do about this? It sounds like there is a major compatibility issue somewhere between SQL Express, VSS writer, and Backup.  Do I need to get rid of one or more of them and go third-party?Thanks

I'm using Windows Server 2008 Backup

the format process, etc). I started noticing gaps in the backups on days that the new drive was connected. I can do a manual backup by clicking 'Backup Once', but it will not run as scheduled (automatically). I've tried deleting and re-adding it. I've tried
changing the backup time. I don't want to change it to incremental, because I want a full backup.. The only way I can get it to backup to this drive is by doing it manually. Any ideas?!

    Hi
Is there a way of restoring the backup after a backup failure to hard drive?
I am using windows backup schedule to backup my servers over the network, I just realised that the backups failed on the last two days. Is there a way of retrieving the last successful backup?. backup failed yesterday and the day before, but was successful
three days ago, and now the server has been giving me problems. How do I restore to that successful point (it's an exchange server.)
    Thank You

    DB:3.47:Windows Server 2008 R2 Restore mz

When you backup some data by using Windows Server backup for the first time (or after 14 days of the previous Full Backup), it takes a Full Backup. Then it creates Incremental backups and stores them as snapshots in a diff area (an area the stores data based
on the Change Journalling functionality in the File System).
So when you access the vhd file that the Windows Server Backup has been created, you actually have the data that has been backed up by Full Backup method and you lose any incremental backups that has been taken after the previous full backup...

    LeoN

DB:3.46:Sharepoint Recovery Through Windows Server Backup k3

Well, as always, it depends. Where is the SQL Server instance you used for your SharePoint 2010 environment located? I suppose it could work if that's all on the same server but I've never tried it and honestly wouldn't recommend it. If its on
a different server, you're really not going to be able to use that Windows Server Backup for anything more than a point of reference or a way to restore the files that were stored in the server's file system.
The thing about SharePoint is that it stores all of its content and a lot of its configuration information in its SQL Server databases, so that's going to be the lynch pin in this process for you. My recommendation would be to focus on making sure those
databases, specifically the content databases, are intact. Get them restored, then focus on getting a SharePoint farm created to attach them to. You'll have to build a new farm but do it to match the configuration of the old one as best as you can, I just
don't think trying a Windows restore of the SharePoint server is the best way to ensure the long term health of your environment. A restore of the Windows Server Backup may work initially, but I would only use it as a point of reference, a fresh rebuild is
going to give you a more stable platform over the long haul.
For some good starter info on how to restore a SharePoint Server 2010 farm, I would recommend reading this:

    Hi,

I just attempted to do a test Windows Server 2008 R2 backup using the Windows Server Backup tool, to an external Blu-Ray writer drivethat uses 100-GB capacity Blu-Ray discs. (I was earlier able to successfully backup ~63 GB to a single 100 GB
BDXL disc.) However, when I attempted to do a test backup of ~300 GB to multiple 100 GB BDXL discs, with 84% of the backup performed, I suddenly got an error message that said Status: Backup failed to complete. There is not enough space
on the disc. I had been able to transfer exactly 244.46 GB of 290.49 GB to the BDXL backup media, before the backup attempt failed, before it was able to verify the second disc in the backup set. Windows Server Backup also did not give the option
to insert a second, different 2nd backup disk, for the option to retry the particular backup disc operation in question, as it usually does.

This was my first test attempt to backup to multiple BDXL discs, and these discs are not inexpensive (I paid $180 for 3 BDXL dics, and 2 of these are no good now b/c of the failed backup attempt). Please help/advise, so that future test backups willhopefully
    not fail?

    Thank you!

DB:3.46:Windows Server Backup On Windows Server 2008 R2 Fails To Successfully Back Up ~300 Gb Ext. Hd Space To 100 Gb Bdxl Blu-Ray Discs, Receive Error Message Instead a7

Latest updates, as promised: second backup to two 100GB BDXL discs was successful, and also restored OK with no problems on test restore attempt. Which leads me to wonder if perhaps the 2nd BDXL disc on the first failed backup attempt was maybe
    defective?
Another difference on the 2nd test backup and restore attempt was that when I performed the backup, under the Advanced properties, I selected the VSS Full backup option, rather than VSS Copy; not sure if this makes a major difference or not though.

It seems database HeavyBidBackup.is offline. So you cannot take backup as well as you cannot run DBCC on it. You need to bring this database online or need to remove it from backup job.

    DB:3.43:Windows Server Backup Fails s9

This answer was helpful, but left me wondering as to the root cause.
I have my Windows Server 2008 R2 server performing daily backups of C:, a secondary HDD, and the System State to a network location. Here is what happened:
    3/12 was successful
    3/13 was successful
3/14 SAYS it was successful, but when you look at the report, only C: and the secondary HDD was backed up. The system state says 0kb
    3/15 no entry.
3/16 and on fail because there is an ongoing operation.

When I ran thewbadmin get status command, I found something interesting. it reported:
The backup of Volume C: successfully completed
The backup of the V: successfully completed
    Found (0) Files.
    Found (0) Files.
    Found (0) Files.
    Found (0) Files.
... This continued to display until I hit ctrl-C to stop the operation.

    I then ran
wbadmin stop job. It asked me if I was sure, I hit
    Y. The command prompt locked up and I had to force close it. Restarting the command prompt,
wbadmin get status now reports the same as before, except system state line now reads The backup operation stopped before completing. I checked the log directory, Backup_Error logs had been created for each day up to 3/15, but they
were all empty and the successful copy log only had files from the volume copies listed. Server Backup still gives the same error suggesting another operation is running when I try to start it, despite
wbadmin appearing to report the job has been stopped. A reboot of the server allowed the backup to begin, but I had to stop it before it got to System State. (server was in use, was a bad time to let a backup finish)
So, my question here is what caused the System State portion of the 3/14 backup to enter what appeared to be an endless loop, as that appears to be the root cause?

    Hi,
You could run process monitor to check the backup process and see if there is any specific error logged when the error occurs.

A possible cause could be related to C:\System Volume Information folder, thus you could also compare permissions settings with a working computer on this folder inlcuding subfolders like WindowsImageBackup\SPPMetadataCache and see if there is anything
different. TechNet Subscriber Support in forum |If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.

    Hi Shabrez,

At first glance this seems to be an issue where there is a file lock conflict involved on the Symefa.db file. also the error code 0x80070020 suggests that there is also a conflict with a file lock.

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/doxley/archive/2009/11/05/converting-windows-error-codes-to-something-more-friendly.aspx
The below is a useful way to workout the windows error codes 0x8007.... Which may help for easier resolution in the future.

I would first check the share and storage management to see what is holding this file open.

    Hi,
When i try to restore my windows 2008 server to another machine i get the error Failed to Enumerate backup sets And then it says scanning hardware and stays that way.
Anyone had this issue or know how to fix it.

DB:3.37:Windows Server Backup Restore Failed To Enumerate Backup Sets 9m

You can use BMR(Bare Metal Recovery) for recovering your machine to same/different hardware by booting into WinRE using the Recovery Disk. While doing this just make sure of these points:
Cross processor architecture is not supported for BMR recovery. X86 with x86 and amd64 with amd64 etc are the supported models.
You have to use same architecture Recovery Disk CD to start recovery.
Bare Metal Recovery is required if you experience a hard disk failure and need to recover the entire computer image to new hardware, or if you format the entire disk and want to reapply the computer image. The Bare Metal Recovery option will include,
at the present point in time, all volumes that are necessary for Windows to run.
Bare Metal Recovery is not guaranteed for different hardware. There is a dependency on various device drivers and change in critical System drivers could cause malfunction. Here some of the device drivers might be missing/incompatible that are causing
    System crash.
    More information :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979562(WS.10).aspx,
For the error:an internal error occurred while enumerating backup sets
Check from command line tool if backup versions on the target is shown. Sample cmdline
    wbadmin get versions -backuptarget:USB Drive
Try recoverying using commandline (if above succeed).
    wbadmin start sysrecovery -version:Version -backupTarget:USB Drive ...

For more details on CLI options please check Technet help article
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754015(WS.10).aspx

    Few points to note here:
    a. Backup versions are stored in a pre-defined directory structure \WindowsImageBackup\...; If it's tempered tool will not be able to find/show the backup details.
    b. The target system disk should be equal for greater than the source disk (from which backup is taken). Backup size will not matter here.

    Hi.
For the Catalog process to be successful, the path to the backup files should start at the level where
WindowsImageBackup is in the path. If you copy the backup files to a local attached disk, the structure should be as follows:
    F:\WindowsImageBackup\servername\Backup…..
This will not work: F:\ servername\Backup…..
    This will not work: F:\Backup…..
Then try to restore the catalog:
Wbadmin restore catalog –backuptarget:F: (or other drive letter)
Then try to get thebackup versions:

I deleted all old shadow copies but nothing changed. Backup is saving to 2 .vmdk files. Via vSphere client I found out that size of these files is greater than provisioned size of these disks. Is it possible ? Can be this problem ? Thanks for your

not understanding why it is showing wrong capacity in diskmanagement, when it is showing properly in my computer. please anybody have solution for our issue.

DB:3.30:Windows Server Backup And 3tb External Drive 7m

I have Server 2008 R2 SP1. I'm trying to use Windows Server Backup to backup to a 3TB WD Essentials USB 3.0 external drive. Ipreviouslyused a 2TB Buffalo USB 3.0 disk with no problems.
I have two 3TB disks and have tried to backup on twodifferentServer 2008 R2 with the same result. This happens with a scheduled backup or if I use the backup once option. (I'm using the GUI in Server Manager).
The error is: The backup operation that started at '2011-04-11T09:30:04.466027000Z' has failed with following error code '2155348010'
I have read that there is a 2TB volume limit when backing up but the volumes and total data size I'm backing up is less than 2TB. I couldn't find any info saying the the backup media (external drive) had a limit of 2TB?
    Thanks

DB:3.30:Windows Server Backup And 3tb External Drive 7m

Source volume limit of 2TB, not destination.

I think its source and destination. I resized the C drive in my 2008R2 File Server from 4Tb down to 1.7Tb and I still couldn't WSB to my external 3Tb USB drive. Got a 2Tb external and the backups now run. Haven't tried resizing C back to 4Tb to try
it the other way around yet...
You won't be able to expand your C: drive beyond 2 TiB and keep backups working, as CassC said above.
Now, about the destination, it seems to work (both to KernelSoftware up-thread and here in my current testings) provided of course that you first make sure the destination disk uses the GPT scheme, and that it appears to Windows as 512e disk (a 4K-sectored
disk which allows operations on 512-byte sector as well), not as a pure 4-KB sectored disk.

    DB:3.28:Backup a7

The school is beginning to deploy servers running Windows Server 2008. The director is very concerned
about recovering a server that fails because of a failed hard disk.
    Answer the following questions:
    1. When purchasing servers, what are the hardware requirements for scheduling backups using Windows Server Backup?
    2. After performing a backup, how will you recover a server with a failed system disk?
    3. Can the same backup be used to restore files that become corrupted or are accidentally deleted?

    DB:3.28:Backup a7

    Hi,

1.As for hardware requirements, there is not a clear rules, you may look into the section windows
server backup hardware requirements in the following article.
    http://www.techotopia.com/index.php/Windows_Server_2008_Editions_and_System_Requirements

2.Im sorry, I do not understand your main concern clearly, do you want to know how to recover
the backup sets from a corrupted system disk? But, if I misunderstand your main concern, you may feel free to contact me, I will try my best to give you suggestions again.

If the hard disk has corrupted completely because of physical damage and you have no other backup,
it will not restore data from this hard disk.

however, I think you should do multiple backups in different storage location, if one of them has
corrupted, you may use the rest of backup set to restore the data.

As for Choosing a storage location, you may look into the Microsoft KB
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753528.aspx

    3. Can the same backup be used to restore files that become corrupted or are accidentally deleted?
This sentence, whats the precise meaning of this sentence?

Do you want to use one of two exactly the same backups to recover the data when one backup is corrupted?
If so, it is sure can restore data from one of normal backups.

Can we assume that since you are at a later step in the directions provided by Rigger1959 that you have rebooted already?
Rebooting the server should, by the way, have the same effect as restarting the services separately (as indicated in a later step).
Just curious, since I was able to resolve a vssadmin problem some months ago by a simple reboot. Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.

You can try to run chkdsk /r on system drive and also on your target volume. This will fix the corrupted sectors on volume that interfere with the backup operation. Retry your backup after chkdsk.
    Let me know the result.

DB:3.26:Windows Server Backup And Event Viewer zk

    Hello,
I starting Windows Server Backup from within a PowerShell script due to some limitations in the GUI. In Windows Server 2008 it wasn't possible to schedule a backup to a volume. Unfortunately, Windows Server Backup seems to work differently when started manually.
The important thing I'm missing is a proper Event Logging.
When running WBadmin start backup -allCritical -backupTarget:D:\Backup no event will be logged when the backing up the drives failed in case the target volume doesn't have enought free disk space.
Setting up a Backup schedule on Windows Server 2008 R2 the an event is logged in the Application Log. The same is true when I start WBadmin on the command prompt with the -templateId option.
Question: How to I force wbadmin to write proper events or log errors to \Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup - something the TemplateId setting also does.
    Kidn regards,
    Jiriki

DB:3.26:Windows Server Backup And Event Viewer zk

We use Windows Server Backup to back up the system and bootvolume only. Unfortunately, the professional backup tools wecame accrossfail in a bare metal restore scenario in our environment. So we do like some profesional tools too: we backup
the data using Windows Server Backup and then copy the backup files to tape.
We decided to split the first hard disk into three partitions forthesystem volume, the boot volume, and abackup volume. Since we copy the backup to tape we do not need a dedicated backup disk.
Unfortunately, in Windows Server 2008 it is not possible to define a backup policy / schedule in this scenario. So Iwrotea little powershell script that queries WMI for the boot and systemvolume - I need the GUIDs because the system volume
is not mounted - and then execute wbadmin. WBadmin (CLI) allows me to specify a volume as backup target.
Microsoft changed Windows Server Backup with Windows Server 2008 R2 and nowWindows Server Backup (MMC) is capable to set up a backup schedule / policy using a volume. I would like to benefit from these changes but I still have to support Windows Server
    2008.
Another difference is, that Wbadmin writes proper events to the application log when started with the option -templateId. Futhermore, started with this option wbadmin runs asynchronously. Started with the more general options wbadmin runs synchrously and
writes error messages to the console only. Actually I see an event that backup has started but the most likely error we face- not enough free disk space - is not logged.
I have to live with the powershell script I once created for 2008 because even with Service Pack 2 WBadmin hasn't changed much. However,I would like to get wbadmin to write proper events. I guess the secret is the synch or asynch running method, respectivley
the templateId. I search the registry for the template, used strings (Sysnternals) to go through the files and ProcessMonitor to check the activity of the MMC but cannot find the template. Writing my own events using Write-EventLog in Powershell is only the
    second best solution.
I would be very happy if you could give me a hint why wbadmin doesn't write the events.
    Kind regards, Jirki

You can install Windows Server Backup on any editions of Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 systems. The only consideration regarding your scenario is that Windows Server Backup cannot backup Oracle databases cleverly. In this case you need some third-part backup

    Hi,
If the purpose is just to backup files, then you could simply run tools like robocopy to copy files to a USB device and copy these files back to a Windows 7/XP system. There is no need to run the Windows Server Backup.
Or as acs096 said, As Windows Server Backup is actually backup files to a VHD file (virtual hard disk file), it could be mounted in Windows 7 - Disk Management (but not Windows XP). So files could be copied to Windows 7 system as well (actually it is similar
as running robocopy to copy files to Windows 7).TechNet Subscriber Support in forum |If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.

    steps taken are
1.restarted the server exchange writer comes to stable
2.if backup runs writer is not stable

DB:3.22:Vss Writer Failed When Doing An Symantec 2012 Backup af

Ignore anything Symantec says. It's definitely their shoddy Software and not the VSS writers. They just fob you off saying it's an MS issue and to update your Server etc. They can't explain why Veeam works perfectly fine, as does other
    reputable backup software.
Do yourself a favour and ditch BE and move to Veeam. The best decision we have ever made.

DB:3.21:Native Sql Server Backup Failed 78

    Hi All,
Recently we move SQL Server 2008 Enterprise SP3 from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.
We used Native SQL Server Backup. Full one a week. Differential every six our hour. Log every one hour.
We also use Dell EqualLogic 6100 as storage. We also used replicas whole Backup directory to another Dell EqualLogic 4100.
From then our Native SQL Server Differential Backup has been failed frequently. Our Full and Log backup are all OK.
    Here what we have done:
    1) Turn off Dell EqualLogic Replicas
    2) Turn off SQL Server VSS Writer.
Unfortunatedly, our Differential Backup still failed.
Any advise would be really appreciated.
    Thanks and Regards,

We have upgraded all servers to windows server 2008. And we are not able to take the tape based backup from the inbult backup tools of windows server 2008. Anyone can help me to take a backup on tape which is more crusial for me.

    DB:3.21:Tape Backup-Windows Server 2008 m9

There seems to be no tape solution except buying a third party app.
It is however possible to get an acceptable solution with Windows server backup and sets of removable disk drives. The disadvantage is they are fragile (until solid state ones are affordable) and that it is harder to set up and manage than old NT Backup.Carol

Hi,I am afraid thestandardization of the backups across the client machines using Windows Server Backup is not supported. It is designed to be a single machine solution for local machine's backups. Backups from other Windows Server 2008 machine are recoverable, but not from other OS versions. Thanks,AbhinavThis posting is provided AS IS with no warranties, and confers no rights

    Hello:
I am running Server 2008 R2, and when I attempt to do an image backup of the server, I get the message, 2155348300 Windows Backup Failed To Dismount the Backup Image. The backup is going to an external USB drive. I looked at the event
view, and that was what I found. I am running Windows Home Server, but the error was generated at a lower level than the WHS code.
    Any ideas?

DB:3.20:Scripting For Windows Server Backup For Exchange 2010 pc

    Hi,
I'm new to writing scripts and was wondering if anyone could assist with writing a script to backup an Exchange Server in a windows 2008 r2 environment. I currently use Windows Server Backup with a full VSS backup to run exchange backups, however,
each backup overwrites the previous one, and i would really like to have multiple backups. I would also like to specify backup log locations, and have emails sent upon successful backups or failed backups. I am trying to write this powershell
but cant seem to get things to work.
    Thanks

DB:3.20:Scripting For Windows Server Backup For Exchange 2010 pc

This is what I was trying to avoid by sending the OP to the Exchange forum. Exchange backups for other then the tiniest Exchange implementations require a much more complex approach to the backup including knowing what kind of logging is being done
and how the logs need tobe setup and rolled.
Here are a series of articles that will explain the why and how of Exchange backup and why the simple approach will not work in most cases.
The WBAdmin backup is mostly good for snapshotting a configuration. The mail stores need to be handled in slightly different ways depending on the configuration.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
