    Hello,

I needed to remove my Caviar Green from my PC and I am trying to use it as an external drive. My old PC and my laptop run Windows 7, but the laptop cannot find the drive. I am using a SATA to USB adapter, no enclosure.

Does anyone have idea what could I do to get to my data?

    Thank you

DB:3.46:Operating Mybook Live Duo With Only One Drive Present? 9k

    Hi everyone,

I cannot find anything in the web on this specific topic, but I cannot imagine that I am the only one with this problem!

I recently purchased a used MBLD with only one Caviar green 3TB installed. For the moment this is sufficient for me and I currently have no need for redundant storage.

When I attached it to my network I could not access the internal 3TB drive. I tried to auto-update the WD firmware or change the RAID setting via the web UI, but it keeps telling me that the second drive has failed and neither update nor storage can be performed (not very smart, since an absent drive cannot fail... ;-). It's like a twin engine airplane telling you in mid-air that the working engine has been shut down because the other one failed! What the heck???

Seriously, is there any way to get the MBLD working with only one drive present? Currently RAID is set to 1. Would it help to set it to 0 (which I cannot do via the web UI)? Can RAID be deactivated altogether? Would it help to manually install the newest firmware?

btw, the attached 500GB USB HDD works just fine, but lacks performance (~ 12 MB/s). The MBLD is constantly busy with the installed 3TB Caviar Green, which is kind of ironic, because it's working and I can't access it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So you bought it used or something? No Duos ship with only one drive.

It will only work with one drive in a failure mode. It will not allow you to do anything until you repair the failure.

Since the disk uses "advanced format technology" he is probably referring to your formatting it with 4kb sectors. Probably done easiest in Linux, but search Google. I'm sure there are plenty of How To's available.

I was unaware of this forum until this morning. Spent a major part of yesterday trying to add a WD10EARS to my XP system.

Had it physically installed and tried to start "True Image" and the message said "you have to have at least one WD product installed." Ooops.

That started a wild search for this technically handicapped person - seems the SATA2 connector on the MB was disabled. On my Dell Dimension 4700 Set-up, I could not find a way to enable it. More searching, more searching - voila -

    Enter Set-up

Turn on Scroll Lock, Num Lock and Caps Lock

    Alt+E, Alt+F (Beep!), Alt+B

Computer reboots, discovers new hardware and driver and we are good to go. (Somewhere along the line, the SATA 2 connector on the MB was enabled)

I would guess that many people purchasing and installing new hard drives are doing it on oldersystems like mine with an XP OS.

It would have been really nice if there were directions that included the "If XP does not recognize your new drive, here is a work around" - would have saved me approximately two to three hours on installation.

After clearing this hurdle, True Image performed flawlessly and the new drive is part of the system.

I only look like a stingray.. no French in me!! LOL!It is a long story. I am not sure.. but perhaps you can fix the 3TB.. there is not much experience out there.. but in general people have run into issues. Read around.. for some reason, the series 1 has less issues than series 2 but I cannot see the forum reference. You might be able to do something. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1367904You will need to stick the drive onto a pc and run the utilities from WD, maybe you can reset the drive behaviour. The 2TB green WD is fine.. but not the advanced geometry. See articles about AFhttp://www.wdc.com/global/products/features/?id=7language=1So the WD ordinary green forget the number. Most 7200 are fine.. the power saving and temp reduction for green drives is neglible. But Hitachi drives which work fine run hot.. don't buy them. Seagate or Samsung should be fine. .drives are in short supply especially as people avoid the AF drives. They tend to be left on the shelves. Before you buy just google for success stories.

    DB:2.82:Upgrade Sharespace 2tb With 2x Wd10ears? sx

    Hi Jliford,

Waiting for the Sharespace can be a pain sometimes. Let me first say that the only reason I chose the EARS drives was because I couldn't source any EADS ones here in Australia. I can't see why it would not work though.

I don't think you have to worry about the jumper setting as this only applies to the EARS series (2TB and above) - (sector alignment etc).

A few things I would suggest would be:

    - With your original setup - so you can access the web interface again - In advanced mode, System Tab, Advanced icon, under "Extend Span", Mode - change to "Manual"

    - I would then power down the device, remove all drives and add one of the new 2TB ones and power back on. Hopefully the device should initialise OK and register the drive as new and valid

    - If all good, power down and add the second drive and so on until all four drives are installed and working.

    - Then you can choose the RAID level you want and let it format (probably for the next 2-3 days)

If you have no success after adding the first drive, perhaps a full factory reset may help.

Aside from needing that to help in any great detail, can you access the BIOS or POST screen on the Windows 7 computer and see if the drive is listed? 1) It appears that the drive sets itself to "sleep" mode every now and then. Is it possible to configure the drive so as this is turned off completely? (MacOS can power down drives after periods of inactivity anyway, and without causing any problems like a self-powering drive usually does).

    2) I've read issues about it not being suitable for RAID and being unreliable and having low performance in general.

Is there any truth to this, or is it on par with most other drives/brands out there, and just the unhappy few let out their frustrations here while those happy with it don't say anything?

    3) I read somewhere that there are problems hot-swapping these drives (it'll be mounted inside a hot-swap drive tray enclosure). Is there any truth to that?

DB:2.75:"Caviar Green" -Should I Buy It? / Sleep Mode c9

We have had the same problem with a Time Machine backup server we have. We installed the 4 x 1.5tb Cavier Greens in the server.

The server itself is running Linux CentOS(Red Hat) as the os. The way we got around the problem is we set up a cron job to touch a very small file (a simple 16 byte text file that is erased after it touched) every couple of minutes to the hard drives. The idea being that if the hard drive is touched or written to the sleep mode would be reset every time.

    So far is has worked.

You may need to initialize, partition and format your drive. Make sure to format with NTFS and 64K Allocation Unit Size, if you look for faster performance.

    Follow these steps..

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, but cannot find a way to get it recognized any differently. The WD Data Lifeguard software doesnt run on the system - dies with an error before coming all the way up - and the only thing that sees this as a larger format drive is the Intel Rapid Storage software (which recognizes it correctly - maybe only because it recognizes the HDDs model number?).

Is this system capable of handling a drive this big? If not, what is the size limit for a drive that it will properly recognize?

DB:2.68:Wd Caviar Green 1tb Disk Failed - Advice Required 7k

    Hello,

I'm a novice at disk recovery so have been trying to follow advice on forums such as this, but can't get any further. Can any one advise me what to do or try next?

I have a Windows Vista desktop with a 160Gb boot disk and a WD10EARS-00Y5B1 Caviar Green 1TB storage disk (with one solo partition which was about two-thirds full). Shortly after new year, the WD storage disk failed: Windows recognised a disk in the Windows Explorer/Computer listings butI cannot access the disk, find any details or run a check disk. The boot start-up/setup (BIOS?) screens also detect the disk, showing the details and disk size. An early chkdsk run on the disk run from the command prompt was hanging while checking file segments: it started listing errors at around the 294,500 segment of 335,000 or so, and hang around the 299,000 point.

A more-technically minded friend suggested booting up in Ubuntu and looking at the disk that way, so I downloaded and burnt an Ubuntu 11.10 boot disk and booted the desktop from that. Through Ubuntu I could see the disk and it showed the correct "name" label I had given it, but I could not mount or lookinto the disk further. I was able to create an image of the disk onto a 1.5 TB external drive and some "foremost" audit runs on that image showed names of files that I recognise and expect, so clearly some data is still on the disk (probably most of it). However trying packages like P2 eXplorer, I can't "mount" the image file enough to investigate it, getting "Can't get disk info; media is write protected" errors. This seems odd as that external drive, the directory structure to the image file and the image file itself seems to have Full Control permissions to Everyone.

Any suggestions as what the fault maybeor how I can recover the data or disk myself? Additionally, does anyone know about this "media is write protected" issue?

    Regards,

    Graham

Recovering the files yourself is possible if use a recovery software as the previous guys already stated..

Media is write protected normally means the drive privileges have been changed by an user. You can always try taking ownership of the file/drive. Go to microsoft support for more info.

DB:2.65:Reinstall Windows 7 To A Different Partition pd

    Hello,

I just purchased a HP Pavilion P6320Y quad-core AMD Phenom II X4. I'm excited to try and use this robust machine to it's full potential.

The computer computer came with a 1TB WD Caviar Green hard disk drive, and I have installed a second 1TB WD Caviar Green hard disk drive as well as an 80GB WD800JD Caviar hard disk drive. Currently both Windows 7 and the recovery partition are on the intially shipped drive. However, I would like to reinstall Windows 7 to the 80GB drive so that I can reformat both 1TB drives and use them both in a RAID 1 mirrored configuration through Windows.

I have plenty of experience with IT and computers in general so I assumed that the Recovery Manager would prompt me to select a partition to reinstall Windows 7. However, it appears that the Recovery Manager's default behavior is to reinstall windows to the C:\ drive. I looked around the recovery manager but did not find a way to change the installation path. I additionally searched the HP support website and Google but did not come up with a way to change the way Windows is reinstalled by the Recovery Manager.

As a last resort I decided to try and trick the Recovery Manager by turning off both 1TB hard drives in the BIOS so that the only available partition would be the 80GB hard drive. However, then the Recovery Manger tells me that the installation drive is smaller than the originally installed drive, and thus the installation cannot continue. However, this clearly cannot be the intended behavior as 80GB is more than enough to hold Windows 7.

How can I accomplish my goal (reinstall Windows 7 to the 80GB drive)?

DB:2.65:Reinstall Windows 7 To A Different Partition pd

Get a drive imaging product and use it to image across your C drive to the smaller HD. It will adjust the C partition to fit. Once that is done then give it a go. Hit the ESC key at the HP blue screen and select the device to boot. If that works then you could either change the boot device order in the bios (need to remember that is case of a bios clear) or swap the HD 0 sata cable with the small drive sata cable.

BTW, I use Paragon Hard Drive Management Suite but there are other good products. Paragon also has a boot disk.

Use PC Doctor to burn a diagnostic boot disk as it may come in handy.

DB:2.59:Can The Caviar Green Drives Be Flashed With Blue Firmware? 81

I remember reading somewhere on the Internet that the Caviar Red, Green and Blue drives of the same capacity are all physically identical to each other, and that the only thing that separates them is the type of firmware they run. If that be the case, then there is physically no reason why Western Digital cannot release 2-3TB Caviar Blues, so I was wondering whether it would be possible to change the firmware of the 2-3TB Caviar Greens such that they operate like 2-3TB Caviar Blues.

I know this sounds drastic, and could even void my warranty, but that’s a small price to pay to get the hard drive of my dreams. The Blacks are much too noisy for everyday use, and the Reds and Greens spin at a ridiculously low 5400-5900rpm. The Blues are the sweet spot between both these extremes, but alas, they also come in ridiculously low capacities.

Since Western Digital seems determined to phase out the Caviar Blue drives altogether and force everyone who wants a quiet drive to put up with increasingly low spindle speeds or capacities, could you please tell me how to disable all the green, power saving features on the Caviar Green drives (such as Intellipower and Intellipark) and increase the spindle speed to a full 7200rpm?

It used to be easy to get a quiet 7200rpm hard drive, but now Western Digital’s trying to make it as difficult as possible. They certainly do have the technology to make quiet 7200rpm hard drives if they really want to, as evidenced by the 10EZEX, but I think I’ll be an old man by the time the 20EZEX and 30EZEX models are released. Could you please tell me how to turn the 20EZRX and 30ZERX models into 20EZEX and 30EZEX ones so I don’t have to keep on waiting for Western Digital to release them?

DB:2.59:Can The Caviar Green Drives Be Flashed With Blue Firmware? 81

Thanks for your advice. I already came to a similar conclusion myself, but I wanted to leave the question open for several more days just in case my conclusion was wrong. My original reasoning was that a hard drive's spindle speed could be overclocked, in much the same was as a processor or video card, but when I thought about it a bit more, I realised that unless the manufacturers have specifically tested the hard drives at the higher spindle speeds and guaranteed that they work properly, there is always the potential for loss of data due to the disks moving much faster than the rest of the components are able to keep up with.

I've been told that one of the reasons the Black drives are so noisy is because they need a dual-stage actuator in order to ensure that the data isn't corrupted at the higher 7200rpm spindle speed, and if that be the case, then the concern with flashing a Green drive with Blue firmware is that it might not work properly without that dual-stage actuator. The other obvious problem, of course, is that the Blue firmware itself would probably have a specific capacity built into it, and if that be the case, then I would probably have to alter the firmware itself in order to make it recognise a larger capacity.

Combined with the knowledge that the PCB boards are different for both the Green and the Blue drives, I would have great difficulty trusting my data to a Green hard drive that had been flashed with Blue firmware, even if I was able to find a way to do it. Hence, I think I'll just sit back and wait for you (Western Digital) to release higher-capacity Caviar Blues when you're good and ready, because there are just too many risks involved in doing anything else. Reliability is always going to be a much more important issue to me than speed, capacity or acoustics, and that is the main reason I've decided against trying to flash a Green drive with Blue firmware. Anyway, thanks for providing confirmation that I've made the correct decision.

The corresponding models for this serial number are below.WD5000KS-00MNB0These models are Caviar Blue's, so they need caviar in the casing. If you put in a caviar green or black, it will not function properly. If you wish replace your old defective drives, then you need to purchase caviar blue's with the same model.Since your current casing ( the my book that you have ) has an older controller, a different drive will not be recognized.I wrote this back:"You cannot buy disks available 4 years ago!I need to upgrade the disks in the external enclosure or else I can't use it!Not available - WD Caviar Blue WD5000KS 500 GBNot available - WD Caviar Blue WD5000AAJS 500 GBNot available - WD Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640 GBNot available - WD Caviar Blue WD7500AAKS 750 GBAvailable - WD Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1 TBPlease advise what +1TB drives I can install in the external enclosure. Also is there a firmware available so that I could use any of the following drive generations like WD Caviar Green? If there is no new firmware to support bigger drives, please request that it will be developed."NB: you can actually still buy the WD7500AAKS and the WD6400AAKS, but why not upgrade to 1TB. Also the controller itself will not have a limitation at 1TB if it can handle 500GB disks in a RAID0.next answer from WD support:It is not possible at all to put in that casing a different model. No upgrades are possible as the controller of the casing and the model do not match. So it is not possible to buy another disk other than the identical modelI wrote this back:The My Book Pro Edition II was available in these capacities:WD20000C033-001 WDG2TP20000 2.0 TBWD15000C033-001 WDG2TP15000 1.5 TBWD10000C033-001 WDG2TP10000 1.0 TBWD6400C033-001 WDG2TP6400 640 GBWD5000C033-001 WDG2TP5000 500 GBThe controller of the casing is the same in all of them, so I can put smaller or bigger disks in the there (upgrade/replace).Additionally the WD Caviar Blue HDD are std. SATA and can be used in any modern computer.I point to the replacement specification on WD, where it only says that you need to use WD disks, it does not specify WD Caviar Blue or other limitations.Dismantile and replace the failed hard drive in the WD My Book Pro II Dual-drive System following the directions in Answer ID 1464: How to dismantle a My Book Pro Edition II, to replace a hard drive."Important: The user serviceable enclosure will only work with replacement hard drives from Western Digital. Inserting a non-Western Digital hard drive into the enclosure could cause damage or data loss."Please refer to an official statement or support case for future reference, so this information is available online for the public. So please advise how these two following disks can be used:WD Caviar Blue WD7500AAKS 750 GBWD Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1 TBnext answer from WD support:I have to inform you that non of the changes that you make will recreate the volume on the unit.Only a identical drive will enable the rebuild of the raid and making it a functional unit. The unit has a software raid and this is partly on the drives programmed. So if you take out one drive you can rebuild it if you take both drives out the software raid is no longer on the drives so no recreation possible.A upgrade possibility of both drives is not possible as of this software raid.If you exchange just one drive and this in a other model this is up to you as we don't support this.Because in a raid you always use the identical drives to make sure that you have a working raid.I would advice you to recreate the unit with a WD5000KS or a WD5000AAKS and nothing else to have a proper working unit.I wrote this back:To recreate the volume on the unit it is of course necessary to have an identical disk or bigger for a RAID setup. If the HDD is different from the original, then performance and stability might suffer. In any case it is completely understandable that this scenario, with two NOT identical disks is not supported by WD.I can only guess that WD has put a limitation on the possible alternative disks, like from other manufacturers, but this would only make sense in the warranty period. For support, there will be need to change the disks to different models as time goes by.Since the unit has software RAID and this is partly programmed on the drives, then it's important to note the differences between rebuilding the RAID1 (RAID0 has no Fault Tolerance, so no rebuild possible) and making a completely new RAID1 or RAID0 from scratch. Also possible in advanced RAID systems you can increase the size of a RAID setup by adding bigger disks, this is not an option in any WD my book, I'm sure.In my case I want to make a new RAID1 setup. I have already emptied the good disk in the my book pro II. I am just waiting to buy the right disk to upgrade the enclosure with, in case there are som built in limitations or problems. So what I'm asking for is the supported drives in the WD my book Pro II.my best guess till now is:WD Caviar Blue WD5000KS 500 GBWD Caviar Blue WD5000AAJS 500 GBWD Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640 GBWD Caviar Blue WD7500AAKS 750 GBWD Caviar Blue WD10EALS 1 TBBefore there was mentioned that only the WD Caviar Blue line is supported. From what I can tell they are not developed/produced anymore, so the WD my book Pro II should also support the WD Caviar Green as they are used in the newer generation WD My Book systems.I have heard that some 2TB drives could give issues (Advanced Format, 4K Sector), but a 1½ TB drive should be a good option.

I understand that WD needs to sell new hardware, but an RAID 1 og RAID0 external casing is not cheap, so of course I need a way to fix the problem with a new drive or change both drives. In my case change both drives.

NB: Advanced Format: The 4K Sector

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/2888

next answer from WD support:As informed only the WD5000KS and the WD5000AAKS as we don't have any other testing values.A Upgrade as you want is not possible.

    I wrote this back:

As a customer I have bought an external enclosure with 2 preinstalled HDD's that are user replaceable. WD needs to address the issue of replacing the user replace disks with current and future available disks. If there are issue surrounding new technology such as Advanced Format, 4K Sector. WD also needs to address this with new firmware for the My Book.Imagine selling a PC, laptop, etc. where you only can use HDD's from the org. manufacturer that are several years old. Many my book systems such as mine are still under warranty. Please send this information and request on to a more qualified technician.

I will soon try a setup with different disks and see what happens... just need to find 2 disks that can be used ...

DB:2.56:Wd10ears In Windows 7 : Works But Not Recognized As A Wd Drive 18

    Hello,

Like (many ?) other people, I'm having some problems with my Advanced Format 1 TB Caviar Green drive (WD10EARS) on Windows 7, 64 bits.

It seems that running the WD Align software has improved the transfer rate (I had used GParted to patition and format my disk).

But I'm actually not really satisfied (it's still slow when OS is writing many file, as no cache is used), and there is still something strange :

When I go in the Device Manager of Windows 7, I open the "Disk Drive" section and I only find a "Disk Drive" subsection for which I can open the properties (and for example to manually enable/disable disk write caching). "WD10EARS" doesn't appear there or it seems it should.

In the same time, the "Acronis True Image WD Edition" 's installer doesn't recognise my disk as a WD (so it doesn't want to install).

Moreover, I ran SiSoftware SANDRA and it doesn't found any cache for my disk, although disk write caching is enabled.

So it seems that Windows 7 doesn't recognize totally my hard drive (or simply doesn't have the dedicated driver).

Does anyone have some solution to this ?

    Thank you !

I hope my my problem and my English are enough understandable.

I'm searching the web for days, I've tried many things but it begins to be too long to find a solution...

DB:2.56:Wd10ears In Windows 7 : Works But Not Recognized As A Wd Drive 18

Instead of running align, you may want to do a fresh OS install on the drive using windows to format it (blank out the drive by writing zeros to it, and it will be just like a brand new drive). Windows 7 had no issues with any of the ones I threw at it. If you let windows (7 or vista only) format it, you shouldn't need to run align either.

DB:2.55:Frames Dropped During Tv Recording Into Caviar Green 1.5tb zz

I have a Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB InternalHard Diskand a PCI TV Tuner Card. When I was recording a TV show into the Caviar Green hard disk, I noticed that some frames were dropped during the video capture process. The strange thing is that frames did not start dropping immediately after video capturing starts. The frames start to drop approximately 15~45 minutes after the beginning of the TV show. The 15~45 minute range makes this phenomenon appear to be very random. The second strange thing is that frames were only dropped for less than a second and normal video capture resumes in a split second.

I have done recording on other hard disks in my desktop and no frames were dropped at all. I suspect that this may be due to the fact that the Caviar Green hard disk adopts "IntelliPower" and/or "IntelliSeek" features. The other hard disks in my desktop all had fixed rotational speeds. With all other factors kept the same, ceteris paribus, I suspect that the variable rotational speed of the Caviar Green may be responsible for the dropped frames. I think the Caviar Green hard disk may be trying to spin down after some time, but detects that video capturing is still in process and spins up again. This may explain the strange phenomenon where frames did not drop immediately after the start of the video capture process and when they do, they stopped dropping in a split second.

I have read some of the other posts in this forum, and I assure you that the power management features in my operating system are set to "never", meaning that hard disks do not spin down during inactivity. The hibernate function is also disabled. If my suspicions are right, is there ahard disk management software to manually force the Caviar Green to spin at maximum rotational speed during critical operations like real-time TV show video capture, and "IntelliPower"/"IntelliSeek" features re-enabled manually when needed (after the end of the TV show)?

I see "disable tagged queuing" and "disable synchronous transfers" options in the operating system's device manger. I enabled "disable synchronous transfers" but the same issue persists. Maybe these options make no difference at all with regard to this issue? Maybe I should try to enable "disable tagged queuing" too?

The second suspicion that I have is the large 32MB buffer in the hard disk. The other hard disks in my desktop have 4MB, 8MB and 16MB buffers respectively, and they do not experience dropped frames during video capture. Maybe the Caviar Green hard disk have issues with writing from buffer onto disk during real-time video capture, causing frames to be dropped?

I read from the other posts in this forum that the Western Digital AV-GP model is recommended for video capture and the Caviar Black with fixed 7200RPM rotational speed for high performance, but I already made the mistake of purchasing the Caviar Green. I did not realize that the "Green" features would come at cost of dropped frames. Besides, I intend to use the Caviar Green for multiple purposes, e.g. office applications, games, video capture and editing, etc, not solely for video capturing.

Currently, I am circumventing this problem by recording into the other hard disks in my desktop that have fixed rotational speeds, and copying the captured videofile after recording into the Caviar Green for storage and editing. In other words, its a two-step process. But I am still a tiny little bit infuriated by the fact that it cannot be a one-step process.

Any opinions on this post would be deeply appreciated. Please forgive me for this lengthy post.

Hi. I have a problem. My new bought WD Caviar Green 1TB Sata2 64MB (WD10EARS) HDD isn't shown when i try to format disk. I use Win 7 x64. But I also tried to format it to Win XP but the problem occurs anyway.

In BIOS settings, i can see my WD HDD. At the beginning it's shown also. But when I turn on the PC it's not shown as a Harddrive... I get to the Device Manager and my WD HDD is shown in "Other Devices", but not in "Disc Drivers". My old Seagate HDD is shown and I use it for years... By the way it's not shown in the Disc Management. So what should I do? I can't format the disk, so i can't use it. I bought it two days ago and really want to solve the problem. Is it because of my PC, or the HDD? If it's the HDD, i'm going to get it to the retailer company (Exa).

Sorry for bad Eng. And I'd really happy if it's solved.

    Hi All.

I'm on this page on NewEgg looking for a 1TB drive to run Win 7 on and I'm feeling like a Dodo Bird. I know 7200 RPM is good because that means it is faster than 5400 but some of these don't show the RPM. Also, someone on the list was kind enough to say that SATA II or III are OK but is one better than the other?

I am looking for a fast, stable drive and I think I am comfortable with Western Digital. Is one of the below better than the others?

Also, I am inclined to go with 1.5 TB or even 2 TB since I think my online backup is unlimited and I am thinking this will let me get the information that is currently off my Hard Drive back on my hard drive (and backed up) but now that I think about this that means that I won't have enough room on my 2 TB Time Capsule that is also backing up my 250 GB laptop. Hi Hatter.

Thanks. I like the idea of going with the Black Caviar drives and the 1 TB seems to make sense over here. I am a little slow with the terminilogy though as I don't understand much more than "RAM".

Can I please ask you what SSD is and can I please ask you if I can go ahead and purchase two of these drives and keep the second on in there as a "mirror" of the first in an /easy/ way? I think I have my backup system taken care of and for under a hundred dollars for an extra drive it seems like it might make sense to add another type of backup system or simply another backup drive that is internal to the machine.

I thought it would be fairly straightforward to replace a failing a hard drive with a new one--that has not been the case. My old hard drive (a WD 640GB) gave me a message saying it was going to fail so I bought the new 1TB Caviar Green. I replaced the hard drive, booted up the computer and the BIOS recognized the new hard drive. I had problems with the recovery discs from HP (understatement) and had to keep on rebooting my computer. I had already posted on the HP support forums and followed some of their advice to try and get it to work. Well, the computer only gets to the HP splash screen and is unresponsive to anything now. I tried to put back my old hard drive and it does the same thing. Nothing..works...help

My new-build computer hangs if the WD10EARS 1.0TB is attached. ie: cannot even get into the BIOS ...the system just sits there telling me to hit DEL to enter BIOS, but is 100% unresponsive. So the new computer is now running on two smaller, older SATA drives which both work fine (160GB 600GB), but I cannot use the 1TB drive

Does theWD10EARS work? Yes, fine, in other machines. It was running my old computer the day prior to re-building. And it ran happily in my mother's ancient machine this morning. But it totally hangs my new machine. ...the other disks don't.

    Testing scenario

When rebuilding, I had the case on my desk and the only components attached were:-
PSUCPU fanMemoryWD10EARS HDD...plus keyboard, mouse monitor.
I tested with theWD10EARS attached to every SATA socket and intially thought the new motherboard was DOA (because I knew the HDD worked okay!)

    New machine specs
ASUS P8Z77-V LX motherboard- HDD managed as IDE (WD10EARSdidn't work with AHCI, IDE was the last attempt to gain access!)8 GB Crucial RAMIntel i5-3470 3.2GHz CPU
So....how do I get this HDD to stop hanging the BIOS and actually be useable on my machine?

DB:2.48:Wd Caviar Green - Hangs Bios md

hmm i wonder what the problem was then.

It's good you posted back for everyone else too

I havn't had a board of my own that has AHCI support but i had to disable it before

to install xp on my brothers laptop and i left it disabled and he ended up having BSOD

latter on and i had to turn it back on.. anyway i don't know much about it lol

all i do know is persisentance pays.. as you showed here !

also i wonder are you using GPT partitions at all ? I'm seeing this more and more

and i don't have any experience with that either.. new technologies come out and

Hi well they are not saying much about the rpm of the drives just that it is a 7200 rpm drive but will go to 5400 rpm. You are buying a green drive so cutting the rpm to the drive when its not needed would save power not much hehe but thats about all they say.

I used the program to fix the lcc problem, but now my hard disk is broken, the computer cannot properly recognise the hard disk, it shows the capacity as 465.77GB, and all data inside is lost!!! I tried to format it and deleted the partition but nothing worked............ is there anyway to fix it?

DB:2.46:Wdidle3 Broke My Wd10ears Hard Disk cs

YES!!! IT WORKED!!!! I GOT MY FILES BACK!!!! THANK YOU!!!!! *hug kiss*

So let me tell you how I did it:

I used HD Capacity Restore for both of my HD, since I've repartitioned my 1.5TB HD after the incident, the HD still appears as 465GB, so I went to the Disk Management and found the rest of the lost capacity were there separately as an unpartition area, what i did was just simply delete the 465GB partition, and then partition the entire HD again, that's how I got my 1.5TB back!

As for my 1TB HD, since I didnt do anything to it after the gigabyte error, I just used the program and claim all my files back!

Afterwards I immediately updated my BIOS~

"BTW, the reason that the BIOS wrote to your drive is probably because you disturbed the boot order, or changed the physical positions of the drives.'"

Yup, I did pull out my HD from the desktop after I used wdidle3 and reconnect it externally by usb again, I guess that's why it went wrong.......

So I guess it wasn't the wdidle3's fault at all......... Now I'm just wondering whether or not any of my files has been corrupted by the HPA, I did use the Editor to look into the disk but its WAY too complex for me to deal with, all I see is numbers............... anyway I'm happy that I got my files back! Thanks for your help!

But the product model number (ie. of the enclosure with the drive) is WDBFJK0040HBK - same as yours. And the latest SAT Rev shows SATA Rev. 3.0...the info you gave is identical to mine (except of course the serial number which we both only disclosed partially here). There is NO difference between the one sold in blue box and the one in green box.

1x 500GB WD Caviar Blue hanging off the IDE cable as primary (with a DVDRW as secondary)
6x 2TB WD Caviar Green as one RAID 5 Volume hanging of the ICH10R SATA controller
2x 2TB WD Caviar Green as RAID 1 hanging off the Marvell controller
When the install disk boots, it shows the 500GB drive, and I can select it for install (after crating a primary partition). Once I hit next I get Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation
If I create two RAID 5 Volumes (one as 150GB, the second as the rest of the space) and I load the ICH10R drivers during install, the SW will install into the RAID 5 150GB volume... I can see the IDE 500GB drive, but cannot point the installer to it.
Ultimately, I want the OS on the IDE 500GB so I can leave the 6x 2TB drives for the RAID 5 array. Any ideas whatam I doing wrong please.

DB:2.46:Caviar Green 1tb Bricked Itself, And Support Is Not Willing To Help Me At All 3m

    Hello everyone,

I'm having a hard time with my 1,5 year old WD Caviar Green 1TB hard drive.

I aquired this drive back in '11 because my previous Seagate drive was bricked.

This problem was solved by their support, my data was saved, but the SMART state was really bad due to the shipping. And since that drive caused me trouble already, I wanted to switch to another drive. Looking on the web, many people said WD was better than Seagate and I should switch to them. So I did, and I regret that.

The drive I bought was a Caviar Green WD10EARS 1TB drive made in January of that year, 2011. A new drive, a new start... that's what I thought. A month ago or so, my PC would hang at the Windows 7 bootscreen, 2 of the orbs would appear in the background and it hanged on that forever. So I went to a PC repair shop. They thought it could be the PSU, but I told them I had a brandnew 750W (overkill) PSU. They looked at it and informed me that the HDD was broken. At my second PC, I went and checked it. The BIOS of my main PC could detect it but the secondary not. Windows would not detect the drive on both (hence the boot up hang), and it still wouldn't do anything when in an external USB case. The drive however still acts like it's fine, just spinning away. That was the problem with the Seagate too, no PC would detect it yet it would still spin. Seagate support did practically everything for me, including the money. The WD support however, is poor. VERY poor. Seagate had a chat that helped me inside of 5 minutes. WD has email support were 2(!) cases needed to open to get an answer from someone who obviously didn't properly read my case, telling me that I should get a Windows tool. Yea fine, Windows won't detect it but that utility sure will do it! *sarcasm*. And that took 'em 2 weeks. What is the issue with WD?! Everyone says they are better than Seagate, but I have proof they aren't. What in the world can I do to get my data back?!

When I detach the drive and let my machine boot into windows, the drive is detected and works perfect. Ill go to restart my computer and same thing again....freeze at the ASUS logo

I tested the drive using health tools and its 100% operational and detectable in windows. I have tried plugging it in all 6 SATA ports on the board and same result. I know all SATA ports are operational as they have been tested with other drives. I have ran the board in both AHCI and IDE mode - no luck

I have another WD 650GB Caviar Black drive that works with no probs. And again, the drive is healthy and works once I plug it in after booting into windows.

Any ideas what is going on here, I called ASUS for troubleshoot and of course they said that the drive is faulty - but again, the drive is 100% operational once I am in windows 7

Again, it is freezing BEFORE the bios is able to be loaded - so it doesnt even get that far in the boot process when this drive is attached at power up

NicJohn, WHS 2011 can support drives up to 3 TB but it still has the VHD image limitation of 2 TB. Usually WHS will split a 3 TB drive into two partitions. Unfortunately, this is a limitation of the OS and not the drive. I would also make sure that you have the latest Windows updates for WHS since Microsoft has released several fixes to help with large capacity drive limitations. The Caviar Black is one of the top drives for desktop, no RAID edition. These drives are designed to be used in top of the line computers, such as gaming computers; also, they haveDual processor technology.

The Caviar Green is an eco friendly drive, designed for cool, quiet and low power consumption computer.

In other words, the Caviar Black is faster than the Caviar Green; while the Caviar Green consume less power and is less noisier than the Caviar Black.

    DB:2.43:S10 Hard Drive - Maximum Size? 9c

This is my first time using the Lenovo forums and although this response is for the S-20 I have a follow on question but for the S-10. My apologies if this is an inappropriate place to post/reply but searching the posts this seemed as close to my situation as possible without starting a new thread.

I'm currently configured with the W7 Pro OS on it's own hard drive, and have the other bays populated with a pair of WD Caviar Green WD10EARS 1TB hard drives setup RAID-1. I'd like to bump this up to the Caviar Black; however, before I drop any money on drives (returns are very difficult here in Viet Nam) I want to make sure of two things:

    1] can the S-10 handle the 6 gb/s drives or should I stick with 3 gb/s?
2] can the S-10 handle a pair of 2 TB drives configured RAID-1?

Many thanks in advance for any assistance on this point. I live in Viet Nam and getting info out of the folks from Lenovo here can be somewhat problematic. ;-)

(mod note: split question into new discussion and updated title of post to match)

Erik, I will keep threads as clean and segregated as possible as per your suggestion.I'm on E6850 and running about 35C on average for CPU temps and have all 7200 rpm drives installed and 2 of those are RAID 1, so I think at this point the operating temps are ok with the higher rpm drives: ambient noise levels in Viet Nam (plus we have an 8 month old baby) are far above 25db and I barely notice my S10, idle or seeking.

DB:2.43:Western Digital Wd10ears 1tb Caviar Green Internal Hard Drive - My System Will Not Recognize The New Drive fp

I recently purchased a Dell 4700 computer from a friend, with Windows XP installed. I updated the memory to 2GB and am now trying to install a WD10EARS 1TB hard drive. The new memory works fine the hard drive isn't. My system will not recognize the new
drive.I contacted WD for help and they told me to try diferent jumper combinations which were jumper 1 to 2 and 5 to 6,still does not work, I checked the hardware compatibility list and it said it would start uo with no changes. It doesn't. I'd be very greatlyful
for any suggestions,in other words HELP!

I've had several people over trying to help me resolve my problem. They were all,I thought, more computer savvy than me. As the time progressed the solutions were getting more and more complex. After they all left without resolution I was thinking and it
dawned to me that the simplest solution might be the correct one.One which no one had checked.I turned the computer on and when the Dell logo came on I pushed the F12 button to call up the Dell setup screen. The drive where the new drive was installed was NOT
enabled! Duh! I activated it and the Acronis program recognized it and everything went like clockwork after that. Whew! What a relieve! Thank you for your feedback I'm just glad my problem didn't require it for resolution.Stehen Mod

hi...can i install wd smartware on my (external)caviar green 2tb(+box)??

p.s. i need a startup password for my hd..

    thanks..

They have green drives, correct. But the case and the firmware that allows the encryption is very specific as it is hardware-based, so it's the drive itself getting locked rather than the data.

Try a free encryption software such as TrueCryptand see if it works good for your needs
