Based on the workflow status, I want to directly move the workflow instance to one particular state. In .NET 3.5 State machine workflow, we have an option to move the specific state from initial using SetState option.
Currently I am developing a workflow as a Workflow services (.NET 4.0) using flowchart with send receive activity.
Is there any way to move the workflow to particular state?

    DB:3.36:Workflow State Change 7x

Flowchart workflow doesn't have the capability to be set to an arbitrary activity within the workflow the way that SetState could be used from the host of a .NET 3.5 StateMachine workflow. However, depending on how many different points in the flowchart
that you wish to be able to go back to, you could setup different events within the workflow and add an additional MoveToADifferentPoint type choices. Then, from the host you could signal that it's time to move to another point in the workflow and have it
    accomplished this way.
What sort of scenarios are you looking to implement and this might give some additional ideas.

    Joe,

Thank you so much on such detailed solution. I really appreciate your thorough thought. I will discuss this with our team and users to see that if we canget a simplerrequirement that satisfies our user.

One thing It may make a difference to the solution is that, we do not need to do the count every time an item go through a transition. If the reporting workspace has a workflow to allow user to push for a snap shot of the total countof items in each state at that time should be sufficient. Does that make any differences in this solution?

Hi I am tryin to use modification forms in a sharepoint state machine workflow but can't seem to find any guidance on doing so. All examples point to its use in sequential workflow. Can we actually use enableworkflow modification activity in a state machine workflow?

DB:3.06:Modification Forms Sharepoint State Machine Workflow df

I suggest that you first experiment with Sequential WF and Modification Form first, because there is example as to how it is done. Once you have achieved that, you can try doing it in State WF. You can add 'EnableWorkflow Modification' activity in a state. Make sure you set the state to the new desirable state after the modification.

DB:2.91:Is There Anyway To Rewind / Replay Part Of A Sequential Workflow? ap

I have no idea how to solve this problem so I'm hoping that someone here may be able to help!I have a sequential workflow that contains a custom activity that is responsible for creating a customer in a system, in response to an external event generated by a user of the system. The activity talks to two services - a local SQL Server 2005 database and a remote application server which uses MSMQ for communication. If the remote service throws an exception for whatever reason then my local activity code cannot continue as it relies on data that comes from that source. However I need the workflow to stay alive and allow the user to try again, starting from the same point as they entered originally. This doesn't seem like something you can do directly with Faulting, Canceling or Compensation handlers as they expect the activity to finish execution - the workflow also needs to go back to expecting an external event to arrive so I can't just leave the activity in Executing status either.Specifically these are the requirements:- If any exception is generated while the custom activity is executing, then workflow is rolled back to the state it was in before the user sent the workflow event- The workflow must still be able to notify the host application that there was a failure for a given execution attempt, so that the user interface in turn can indicate this to the user.Rolling back the local database state is easy enough, I'm just putting that part in a TransactionScope block, but I have no idea how to get the workflow to go back into the state it was before execution. Is there a Retry activity out there that can do this? I imagine you could get something to work with a CompositeActivity that spawned a new execution context for each attempt, handling the faulted event to dump the execution context and spawn a new one, but I wouldn't know how to write that myself, at least not at the moment.Appreciate any help! Thanks

Thanks Benoit, that Retry activity is a really good starting point, although I need something event-driven, not timer-driven. Hopefully I'll be able to modify the activity so that it supports my requirements.

Hi there,In the new .NET platform there is a new workflow engine. The engine has several types of worklows, sequential workflow, state worklfow, and I forgot some.To me a workflow is definitely different from a state machine. JBPM seems to be a true workflow solution, and not a state machine. Is this correct? State machines definitely have its purpose, is JBPM in need of a sibling?Rgrds,Sanne

    DB:2.83:State Machine 1s

Hi Koen,Thanks for your reply. The question was meant to be rhetorical! No serious. A workflow is about process state. A state machine in its minimalist form is an object state. The state of the object is changed according to the type of event that occurs. Say the object is in state s1. On event e2 the object switches to s2, on e3 the object switches to s3, on e4 nothing happens, because this is not allowed.Let me give an example. Say someone wants to update an order. This proces can involve a workflow: after the update of the order maybe financial approval needs to be asked. After an selectForUpdate request the invoice switches to the state selectForUpdate. No other event is allowed except the update event. If someone wants to ship the order: nope! Not now.One could model the invoice state in the invoice object: but it doesn't really belong there.Managing object state and process state is different. Both are required in order to implement a robust services system. For as far as I could see JBpm is not intended to manage object state.Rgrds,Sanne

what is the three state workflow?nagg

    DB:2.83:Three State Workflow? ac

    Hi Nagg,
The only workflow that is available in SharePoint Online is the Three-state workflow.
The Three-state workflow is used to manage business processes that require organizations to track the status of an issue or item through three different states and two transitions between the states. With each transition between states, the workflow assigns
a task to a person and sends that person an e-mail alert about the task. When this task is completed, the workflow updates the status of the item and progresses to the next state.
The Three-state workflow is designed to work with the Issue Tracking list template, but it can be used with any list that is set up to contain a
Choice column with three or more values. The values in this
Choice column serve as the states that the workflow tracks.
Many people believe that MOSS comes with only four out-of-the-box workflows (Approval, Collect Feedback, Collect Signatures, and Disposition Approval), and that WSS v3 doesn't come with any out-of-the-box workflows. In actuality, there is another work flow
that is available out-of-the-box to both WSS v3, MOSS 2007, SharePoint 2010it's called the Three-state workflow.

The reason that even many seasoned SharePoint professionals don't know much about the Three-state workflow is because the feature isn't activated by defaultyou will have to go into the
Site collection features, and activate it.

Once you have activated the Three-state workflow feature, it will be available as a workflow template to all your lists, libraries, and content types.

The Three-state workflow allows you to track the status of an item between three states. This is very useful when tracking issues, project tasks, leads, or other similar items.
I won't bore you with details on how to use it; Microsoft has already done an excellent job of explaining
how to use the Three-state Workflow. My mission here is just to let you know that it exists. I will leave you with one
small screenshot though, just to whet your appetite. Look at all the options you have for the task and email details for each transition step.

    Refer thebelow link,

DB:2.81:Getting The State Of Previous Task In A Workflow 8m

    Hi Ankit,

I am guessing that you are referring to workflow activities with 'tasks'. If you want to transfer any value from the previous activity to the current activity, then you can use the workflow scratchpad variables for that. You can declare it like this in the previous activity:-

    workflow.scratchpad.variableName = variableValue;

And use it like this in the current activity:-

    var myValue = workflow.scratchpad.variableName;

If you need the value of some field in the table on which the workflow is running on, you can retrieve it using current.field_name

    Thanks Regards,

    Hari

What purpose do you use the drop down column for?
Assuming the values of the drop down are No/Yes, you can create the reusable workflow like the screenshot:

Hi, You can use SendEmail activity instead of SPUtility.SendEmail activity. Write some code that will extract the names of the people in the SharePoint group one by one. Store these users in SPUser object. Then using this object only, extract the email address like object.Email. Create a string variable that will concatenate all the email addresses at the end of the loop. Now write this string variable equal to CC or BCC oe To property of the send email activity and your mail will go to all the people of the SharePoint group. I have written a code like this only in State Machine workflow to send email to the group and it works perfect. Cannot write the code as it is in my office system and we do not have net on that system. Regards Ginni

How to cancel a running workflow  and then I want to keep the workflow in a consistent state too
    Please help!

    DB:2.77:How To Cancel A Running Workflow 1d

If your workflow contains a long running task (e.g. DB operation), it is recommended to delegate that task to an external service and let workflow continue after the task is done. You can do this by using  CallExternalMethod and HandleExternalEvent activities. Communications samples explain this very well.

To maintain the state you can use TransactionScope or Compensation activities.
Take a look at the Compensation sample. If you want to revert the changes done to the workflow instance state and any database operations done automatically, you can consider using TransactionScope activity. Check the details here

If you are specifically looking for cancelling a workflow take a look at  this sample. It explains how to cancel a workflow from the host. Also If you want to cancel a workflow from within, you can use this approach.

HelloI have a state machine workflow working but now I want to add a new feature that is to return to a previous state...Let me explain how it currently works:I have several states:InitialToStep1DoingStep1ToStep2DoingStep2ToStep3DoindStep3Complete(I create these transitions dynamically when the workflow is started) When any instance starts, it does some processing and then sleeps on the ToStep1 state... Then my application picks this information, changes the state to DoingStep1 by calling an event and when it finished it call an event Step1Done that is responsible to change the instance to ToStep2...So far so good, but... when there is a problem in the Step1, my application suspends the workflow and it remains on the DoingStep1 state...What I want to do is to rewind the workflow to a previous state and resume it so my application can try to process it again...The best way would be to call a method that would do this, but I'm not sure this is possible...Does anybody have any ideas on how to do this? Thanks!

    DB:2.77:Rewind Workflow State x9

I am afraid there is not a easy way to rewind.
I suggest you store the name of state in a property, e.g. PreviousState,  when leaving a state.
In a state which needs be back to the previous state in some cases, use IfElse activity to turn to a branche which has a setState actvity whose target state has the same name as PreviousState.

You just need to drag and drop your 5 workflows in the main workflow, link them in order and on each subworkflow add an exception handling link to a remediation workflow.

All these mechanisms are available in vCO. You need to define what to do in case of exception and how to remediate. vCO include several library workflows were often remediation is used to delete the objects that have been created in a failed workflow. You can use these examples as a starting point.

Can you get the current state of a State Based Workflow when the workflow is not in transition? (i.e., when it's idle)
In Beta 1, with some of the sample code, you could only query the state of the workflow when it was in transition.
With Beta 2, can you query this information when the Workflow is idle?

DB:2.76:Can You Get The Current State Of A State Based Workflow When The Workflow Is Not In Transition? (I.E., When Its Idle) k8

    Hey Mina,
    grab the workflow instance ID
grab a reference to the WF runtime.
    use something like
    StateMachineWorkflowInstance wfInst = new StateMachineWorkflowInstance(wfRuntime, wfID);
From here you can enumerate the States, and get current State etc.
The only thing to watch is - as your workflow progresses, this isnt instantly reflected in wfInst (you could re-create a reference), but in Beta2 it appears as though the wfInst is updated during a period of 'idle' time on the running thread.
    Cheers,

DB:2.76:Workflow Variables When A Workflow Crashes? mf

    Hi Farida,
Persistence in Workflow Manager is a feature which works automatically out-of-the box. PersistActivity which is just most trivial possibility to explicitly persist the instance is in general not required.
For example, Workflow Manager will automatically persist the workflow when workflow instance enters DelayActivity or any of awaiting activities which cause listening for message.
Whenever such activities are scheduled Manager will enforce persistence of workflow instance. However, states of all variables which has been changed between two activities which cause persistence will be lost.
More information, please refer to the link:

    SharePoint Approval Workflow is Sequential/State-Machine?
    thx

    DB:2.75:Workflow? jz

It is a sequential workflow with an option to run a number of tasks in parallel. The parallel tasks aren't the same as a state machine. One of the primary characteristics of state machine is that they can loop back on themselves if there is
something like a rejection or a request for change. The builtin workflow doesn't have that capability.Paul Stork SharePoint Server MVP

My workflows are fairly straight forward state machines.
It seems that serializing the workflow and storing it as binary data is overkill when all I really want to know is what state it is in.

Is there a way to store just the string that says the state of the workflow and to rehydrate the workflow to that state?

DB:2.73:Store Workflow State Without Serializing zs

    Derek,
Unfortunately you cant do what you are aiming for even with a custom persistence service. The reason is that when deserializing you need to give the runtime a completely deserialized workflow object tree. The only was to create an existing workflow activity is through Activity.Load which takes a stream.

DB:2.73:Setting Property Of Child Workflow Inside Invokeworkflow Activity dp

Unfortunately not easily.  The InvokeWorkflow follows a fire-and-forget pattern.  You can communicate with the child workflow only through data exchange services.  You can simulate the termination of the child workflow by firing an event from the parent that gets handled by the child.  The child would throw an exception from within the child workflow when the event is fired.

DB:2.73:Incorrect State Changes In The State Machine Workflow When Running With Multiple Workflow Runtime Accessing The Same Persistence Database 71

I'm hosting the Workflow Runtime in a Windows Service and using the Default Scheduler. Also using the SQL Persistence Service as provided by the Framework.
Recently we have seen weird behaviour when running the system in a farm, we have 4 app servers each running the windows service that hosts the runtime and talking to the same persistence database. We have a State Machine Workflow that act as a starting point
to our process and each state within the workflow triggers a sequential workflow, but when running in a farm we notice that there are some spurious state changes we have never seen this issue when running with a single workflow host.
The State Machine workflow represents a Mortgage Process, It starts of with a Mortgage Interview State, Package Assess Mortgage State, Offer The Mortgage State , Post Offer Stateand Completion State.
Each state triggers a Sequential Workflow and it waits till the sequential workflow completes before moving to the next state. The issue we see is that the State Changes before the Sequential Workflow Completes and gets the State Machine in an inconsistent
    state.
Is there is a known issue with State Machine Workflow when running under a Multiple runtime environment that I'm not aware of?

DB:2.73:Incorrect State Changes In The State Machine Workflow When Running With Multiple Workflow Runtime Accessing The Same Persistence Database 71

If you specify an ownership interval then the instance is owned by the runtime until it goes idle, at which time it will persist and overwrite the previous persisted state. If this is not set, multiple runtimes could load the persisted workflow at the same
time, which can cause problems. For example, WFRuntime A loads the workflow from a persisted point and starts running it. Then Workflow B loads the same workflow from the same point and starts running it. WFRuntime A finishes running it, and it persists. Then
WF B finishes, and it persists, overwriting the persistence from WF A.
In your config example, you have specified the interval to poll for expired timers but not the instance locking, that is controlled by the OwnershipTimeoutSeconds setting. This blog here has some good information on this:

I'm developing a State Machine workflow that passes parameters through events. The Workflow will have to persist its state in a SQL database. My understanding is that the persistence services will persist the current state of the Workflow (e.g. which state the Workflow is in). The workflow is rather useless without also persisting the parameters passed in the event arguments. Will the Workflow Persistence Services automatically persist the values passed in the event arguments or will I have to manually persist these parameters in the database?Thank you in advance,-- Sean

    DB:2.73:Workflow Persistence Event Arguments 1m

    Hi Senfo,
No. You should be able to get the tracked data in UserTrackingRecord.UserData. Also, make sure that you are looking at the correct user tracking event. If your profile enables all user events, you will also see state change events. To filter out just your events, use any string value for the key and you can add a profile which allows only events with that particular key.

    DB:2.73:Workflow Transactions z3

Assuming that you want to coordinate your host level work with the persistence of the instance (which might not be what you want to do, see my questions above) you could consider changing your StateMachineWorkflowInstance.SetState call to an Enqueue call instead.  This will give you the opportunity to provide an IPendingWork object as part of the Enqueue call.  When the next persistence event occurs for your instance your IPendingWork.Commit method will be called with the transaction that is being used for that persistence event.  Do your transactional work in your Commit method under this transaction.  If your work fails the transaction will be rolled back which will roll back the persistence work.  The workflow can then either handle the resulting exception or it will be terminated or aborted (if the termination fails).

To be more precise, SharePoint 2013 still supports the old SP 2010 workflow engine. You need to worry if you want your workflows to run in the new SP 2013 workflow manager (off machine). I don't see much technical reason for you to upgrade your WFs to SP
2013, because there is still support for SP 2010 workflow.

DB:2.73:Thread Affinity Among Events In A State Machine Workflow a3

    Hello,

DB:2.73:Thread Affinity Among Events In A State Machine Workflow a3

I'm not sure what you mean by components within that workflow which require thread affinity but Benoit is correct that it it not possible to predict or specify which thread handles the external event (assuming you're using the DefaultWorkflowSchedulerService). I can think of a couple different possibilities:

    1. Try using the ManualWorkflowSchedulerService if you can afford to have your workflow runtime only using one thread at a time.

    2. Create a local service that creates and holds a (non-threadpool) thread specifically for running these components that require thread affinity. When your events come into the workflow, make a call out to your local service, which can invoke your component work on that special thread.

I am currently working on custom State machine workflow using VS 2008. My Workflow has Initialization State, First State, Second State and Final State. I am using onWorkflowItemChanged Event in First State and Second State and simply checking the Status of Item. The Status of item can be FirstState,SecondState,Completed. I am simply checking if item status updated to Completed, move workflow to Final State (end workflow ). Now my problem is that when workflow moves to final State, rather then workflow should stop it goes re-activate (workflow moves back to initail state) and history log associated to workflow becomes clear. Every thing is fine in my worflow but i just want to stop worflow properly. Kindly help me. I tried my best to solve this issue but could not found any clue. Thanks and advance. Adnan

    Hi Poomani,
Task list is a list helps you to track the work/activity required to be completed by someone.

The Three-state workflow supports business processes that require organizations to track the status of an issue or item through three states and two
    transitions between the states.
SharePoint 2010 task list assigned task to the user. When the user completes the task, the workflow changes the status.

Hi,Any docs or tips on how to create and deploy a State Machine workflow with aspx forms instead of infopath? Thanks,JC

DB:2.73:State Machine Workflow With Aspx Forms fj

HelloI'd like to suggest Robert Sheldon's blog and more specially this: http://rshelton.com/archive/2007/11/21/how-to-video-building-a-basic-approval-workflow-with-sharepoint.aspx .Altought the example uses sequential workflow, the forms are aspx and that should at least guide you to right direction. Another good source is a book called Inside Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 written by Daniel Larson and Ted Pattison. At Ted Pattison's web page, there is a few samples about workflows with aspx forms. The state machine workflow's resources are a bit scarse, but the logic should be the same with sequential workflows. As a personal tought, I can say that workflows with aspx forms are a bit tricky to develope, but after you get the first working examples then everything is easy. I hope that these links help you on the right direction. MSP

    Please help...

    DB:2.73:Sqlpersistance as

To go from state 1 to state 2, you have to fire an event to the workflow, right?

From what I understand, that event should be fired when a user clicks the button on your web page. So you need to give the web page what it needs to fire the event (= the workflow instance id). The easiest solution here is to pass the InstanceId as a parameter to the web page.

Assuming you already have a WorkflowRuntime started. When the user clicks you have to retrieve your WorkflowRuntime (probably using Application). Retrieve your ExternalDataExchangeService (using GetService method on the workflowruntime) and fire your event with the InstanceId given to the web page.

    Hope this helps.

DB:2.72:How To Rewind An Activity In Wf4.0? jc

If you want to allow rewinding or fastforwarding from any point A to any other point B you're probably going to be modelling this as a triggering event which resumes a bookmark (e.g. receive activity, delay activity, custom activity), and this makes State
Machine seem like a better option than Flowchart (to me).

Sadly, it might not look very pretty because you have to model each supported transition explicitly in advance.

    DB:2.72:Adding Stateactivities To A Workflow Dynamically?? 81

    What he means is that instead of  adding activities at runtime, you can statically add all your activities and with and IfElse activity test if on each step if you need to run each of them.However,the workflow foundation class WorkflowChanges may allow you to modify your workflow at runtime.for instance, in the following code, I add a LogToHistoryList activity at runtime into a Sharepoint sequential workflow        private void codeActivity1_ExecuteCode(object sender, EventArgs e)        {            WorkflowChanges changes = new WorkflowChanges(this);            SequenceActivity activity =            (SequenceActivity)changes.TransientWorkflow.GetActivityByName(Workflow1);            LogToHistoryListActivity logActivity = new LogToHistoryListActivity();            logActivity.HistoryOutcome = added;            activity.Activities.Add(logActivity);            ValidationErrorCollection validationErrors = changes.Validate();            if (!validationErrors.HasErrors)                try                {                    ApplyWorkflowChanges(changes);                }                catch (WorkflowValidationFailedException ex)                {                    validationErrors = ex.Errors;                }

Yes, you can definitely create a sequence workflow in state machine workflow. To do so, you just need to drag a sequence activity into any state of your state machine workflow. And, now you can create your sequence workflow in this sequence activity. This is the simplest way to embed sequence into state. Let me know, if you have any other questions.
