I have tried the suggestions from other threads as to how to fix the issue, but none of these have actually worked. My problem exists with smart playlists. They appear as they should in iTunes playlists and when you look at the playlists within iPhone when it is connected. However, iPhone simply does not recognize the track order. Is this soundling like a bug in the software?

So I've given a few important playlists (some smart, some dumb) special names, so they jump to the top of the list on my iPod, and it works great.

How can I mimic the sort order I see on my iPod in iTunes? It would be more convenient to manage those playlists if they were sorted by name, and with the icons designating which playlists are smart I don't imagine it would be too confusing.

When I went to play the saved playlists, the running order of the songs was way out of sequence with that listed on the computer.

To counter this, I tried to restore and start all over. This time, when I created a playlist I received a message stating that there was insufficient space to save the playlist and therefore it couldn't be saved. One of the most frustrating things for me about iTunes Match is the fact that the smart playlists in iTunes (version 10.6) do not sync in alphabetical order on my iPad/iPhone running iOS 5.1.Even though I click on the Name column and the songs in iTunes appear in alphabetical order, the songs appear in a random order on the iPad. I spent hours trying to fix this by turning iTunes Match off on my iPad, turning it on etc all to no avail. I created new smart playlists thinking that maybe the original smart playlists were corrupted in some way by the upgrade to the latest version of iTunes. This did not work either. Then, I had an idea. I created a new playlist (not a smart one), called it Test Alpha, copied the songs from the smart playlist into it and waited for my iPad to update.Voila! The songs in this new, non-smart playlist are in alphabetical order.I do hope that this problem is fixed. It is a pain to do this for the 15 odd smart playlist I have. Hope this helps someone else.

DB:2.96:Manually And Quickly Updating Smart Playlists With 'Live Updating' Off? cp

    Hi,

I have a quite large music library (13,000 songs) and use a multitude of nested smart playlists that change often because I don't want to listen to the same song every day and I want to listen to good songs more often than bad songs. I'm also splitting up by genre, because not all my friends appreciate all of my musical tastes, and I myself am not always in the mood for every genre.

The consequence of this is that from time to time, iTunes stutters when playing a new song, presumably because it's updating all the smart playlists when the previous song ended.

Now, I had hoped that turning 'Live Updating' off would cause iTunes to update the smart playlists at startup instead of updating continuously. However, it turns out that though the performance improved dramatically, turning off 'Live Updating' caused the smart playlists to never update. Obviously I don't want that, since that means all my smart playlists are static.

Is there a way to have both good performance and easy updating of the playlists? There are a bit too many playlists to manually update very day by forcing iTunes to update the playlist.

An 'Update all smart playlists now' button or a 'Update all smart playlists at startup' feature would be nice...

    Any hints, tips, help, suggestions?

    Thank you so much.
    Greetings,

DB:2.96:Manually And Quickly Updating Smart Playlists With 'Live Updating' Off? cp

Using the SDK, you (well, I) would do something like this:
    1. Get a list of all the playlists in the iTunes Library.
    2. For each playlist, test if playlist is a Smart playlist (Playlist-Smart() returns a boolean)
2a. If it is a smart playlist, select it by setting a property value for the BrowserWindow object (basically BrowserWindow-SelectedPlaylist(playlist object)) (for example perl code, see http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.perl.misc/browse_thread/thread/1248563d 743795d8/be1a88fc6eeab0e4?lnk=gstq=itunesperlselectedplaylistrnum=1#be1a88fc6eeab0e4)
2b. Using keystrokes (Alt-F,G), select "File..Get Info". Then keystroke Alt-U to toggle live updating, then Enter to click OK.
2c. Repeat above, which should toggle live updating off again. (unfortunately there is no way to be sure whether the starting state was off or on -- I'm assuming it will always be off)

Not sure what you mean by a 'Library Sort Order' there is no set sort order for a library (or project, folder, album). The order the images are displayed is set for each, within any library you can have one project sort by date, another by name, a third by metadata. So again the library (or any other container) does not have a specific sort order. If that was the case Aperture would be serverly limited, no?regards

The only settings for the smart playlist are Media Kind = Podcast and Play Count = 0.The sorting is done in the actual playlist view itself by clicking the sort bar. Every other setting works (That I've tried) except Date Published, which is the only one that matters to me. Doing Date Published makes it sort by Date Added, which is exactly backwards because Itunes downloads podcast back episodes last to first. If I turn off Live Updating, it sorts correctly.

Does anyone know how I could see all the playlists? The playlists are marked as visible on my Spotify account on the computer, ipad and iphone.

DB:2.83:Smart Playlist Not Being Smart On The Nano Itself? z7

    Hi,

I have some playlists with one condition being not playing tracks with any track count (skip if track count 0), and they are meant to be random every time they are played _on the iPod_.

The idea behind this is to create some 10 or so playlists for a party, and then being able to jump between playlists and not having the same songs play in the same order again.

To my surprise the iPod didn't play according to the smart playlist. Instead it played the same tracks in the same order every time I started playing a playlist.

Is this how the Nano is supposed to work, or am I doing something wrong? To my mind having a smart playlist only being smart in iTunes seems totally unnecessary, since I really don't use iTunes to listen to music (Squeezebox is much nicer :)).

I have a mixture of smart and normal playlists. They appear on the nano in alphabetical order, unlike iTunes where he smart ones are always above the normal ones. I say this as context, because I suspect, but am not sure, that it is related to this...

When I select a playlist to use in a photo slideshow, I get the wrong one. If my playlists were numbered 1 to 7, and I select 4, I get 2. If I ask for 5, I get 3. I have exactly the right number of smart playlists above the one I want to cause this offset.

Going to test it properly later - in the meantime, anyone else notice it?

obviously Apple does not consider this a bug...
It's hard to imagine that Apple might not consider it a bug. Personally I chalk it up to the fact that (a) it's a relatively harmless (albeit annoying) bug; and (b) they've got tons of bugs to fix and this one hasn't made it to the top of the list yet. I've added this to my list of bugs to test with every new release (because Apple frustratingly refuses to issue release notes that tells us what bugs have been fixed).

Regardless, their users obviously consider the loss of smart playlist sorting a bug. Please join us in complaining to Apple about this:

When I add an iTunes Smart Playlist to my iPhone 4, the tracks are not in the same order on the iPhone as they are on iTunes. When the iPhone is connected to iTunes, the playlist appears to be sorted correctly but on the device itself, it's out of order. All of my playlists in iTunes are sorted in Album by Artist/Year order, and they occasionally sync the songs in the correct order, but then the order changes.

DB:2.81:Smart Playlist Contents In Random Order On Iphone 4 ds

Adding "Playlist is Music" does not seem to be required on my iPhone or iPad, their playlists match the library that I auto-sync both devices to.First, right-click on the playlist name in your iTunes library and select "Copy to play order". That saves the sort order of the playlist, and if you don't do that then the sorting on your device may not be what you expect. If that does not help some of your smart playlists, then right-click on the playlist name in iTunes and select "Duplicate". Then get the new playlist sorted how you like and "lock" the sorting as described above, then delete the original playlist (re-name the copy if you'd like) and check/ change your sync settings to make sure the new playlist syncs to your device.Simon Chiplin wrote:Adding the "Playlist is Music" rule does sort the order correctly but it loses the "live updating" feature on my iPhone which allows the list to be repopulated without syncing back to the PC.Live Updating on the device has by and large been broken since iOS 3, unless you have a very simple smart playlist. But if you include certain criteria like "Playlist Is ..." then Live Updating on the device doesn't work (even if the "source" playlist is synced to the device). There are a few other smart criteria that break LU.

Hello. Just received my new (refurbished) iPod 160GB Classic recently, and in discovering the many changes Apple has introduced, here is one mystery I cannot seem to solve.

As a DJ, my playlists are an essential part of my listening universe. I now have over 8 thousand songs, and the list is growing daily.

When I go to listen to my Playlists, the information is not listed the way I originally wrote it. For instance, it lists "Edit 10" right after "Edit 1". Same for all my many shows. Another example, "Show 11" comes directly after "Show 109", and "Show 151" comes after "Show 15". So, now, none of my listings are in numerical or alphabetical order. What is this about? Can I edit these settings, and if so, how? I have gone into my Settings, looking for a solution, yet I remain mystified.

If you want Playlists in a specific order, then you need to use regular Playlists, and as you compile the list, the arrow in the left column, showing the sequence number, must be pointing up. That column dictates the order of the songs, so arrange the songs the way you want only when the arrow is pointing upwards.

Each is ordered alphabetically, and as we know, you can't rearrange the order of this list.To force this list as I want it to list, I use symbols and numbers, e.g. placing a symbol, e.g. an asterix * or a number, e.g. (1) infront of the name of a playlist in iTunes will order that playlist first, etc. However, when I sync this to my iOS device, this iTunes playlist order is not preserved. The sync ignores any number or symbol and syncs against the first alphabetical letter. The only way to match the iTunes playlist order in the sidebar and an iOS device is start each playlist name with "A", "B", "C", etc. In this way, the playlists in iTunes and iOS will match. Is there any way around this, i.e. not having to use alphabetical letters? Is there any way to manually arrange the playlst order in the sidebar?

After the 3 to 8 grouping, another grouping of another playlist starts and so on. The iPods I have had including the new classic iPod, its just one playlist from A to Z. I am not including the smart playlist.
Does the Nano have some limitation that the iPod does not have?

Recently i was cleaning up my playlists and i accidentally deleted the smart playlist, 'Recently Added'. Now, i tried changing another smart playlist to do the same things as the 'Recently added' but it wont work. It lists all the songs/items i recently added, but not in the order i added them. And i try changing it with the arrow at the top but that messes it up even further.

Is there anyway i can get back the 'Recently Added' playlist?

but not in the order i added them

make sure your date formats go down to hours and minutes, so that anything bought on the same day will show in the right sequence.

DB:2.78:Smart Playlists Still Do Not Display Proper Track Order On Ios Devices! xd

Apple really needs to fix this. Starting with iOS 4 or 5, smart playlists would not show tracks in the order they are set in iTunes unless you added a rule to them stating that "playlist is music." Once iTunes match is activated however, you cannot have that rule in a smart playlist or iTunes will inform you the playlist cannot be synched because "playlists cannot reference other playlists." This is odd because that rule is NOT referencing another playlist.Another odd thing is that you CAN get the playlist to display properly on your iOS device with about 3 extra steps. You select the playlist to play on your iOS device and get a track playing. Now click on the album icon at the top so that iTunes displays the cover art in fullscreen. There is now another playlist indicator at the bottom right of the display. If you tap THAT playlist indicator, suddenly your playlist displays in fullscreen view and is in the proper order. Selecting the first track in this view will cause your playlist to FINALLY play in the correct order. This seriously needs to be fixed. It's a big annoyance and completely opposite of Apple's "it just works" philosophy.I just updated to iOS 6 along with the Mountain Lion 10.8.2 update on my MacBook PRO along with iTunes 10.7 and this STILL is an issue. Unbelievable....

DB:2.78:Playlists On Iphone 5 And Ios 6 Devices Not In Alphabetical Order 77

I posted the following in March of 2012:One of the most frustrating things for me about iTunes Match is the fact that the smart playlists in iTunes (version 10.6) do not sync in alphabetical order on my iPad/iPhone running iOS 5.1.Even though I click on the Name column and the songs in iTunes appear in alphabetical order, the songs appear in a random order on the iPad. Now, I have my brand new iPhone 5 that I set up as a new phone, not restored from my iPhone 4. I thought that surely, with iOS6 and nine months down the track, this issue would be resolved. WRONG!I have smart playlists in my iTunes library like everyone else. For example, I have a Smart Playlist that simply has the criteria: Artist is Bob Dylan, Rating is 5 Star. Live updating. When I turn on iTunes Match on my phone (and iPad), the playlist does not follow the order of the playlist in iTunes. In iTunes, I have the Name column sorted in descending order but the phone shows the songs in a random order that I cannot understand the basis of. Sorting the playlist in iTunes via the Data Added, or Last Played column does NOT change the order of the songs on the iPhone. However, if I change the name of a song, the changed name almost instantly appears on my phone.I read somewhere else that I should right click and select 'Copy to Play Order'. This does not help. Someone else suggested that I add 'Playlist is Music'. But as soon as I do this I get the following:iCloud smart playlist cannot reference other smart playlists. If you add this item to the matching criteria will only be avilable on this computer. Can someone please tell me how the smart playlist I listed above references another playlist? I don't understand what this means.Does anyone else have this issue with the playlists not sorting on the phone as they are sorted in iTunes? Normal playlists behave correctly, but not Smart Playlists.I don't think I will be renewing my membership to iTunes Match when my current subscription expires. This is very, very poor service by Apple.I look forward to any advice. Thank you.

No such issue on my iphone as I had no space for download!Anyway after a bit of playing around I found that the "more" tab had a default to artist - Changed this and all ok back to previous with songs tab in alphabetical title order and artist tab in alphabetical order. I have a playlist called "Best Of The Best". I want this playlist on both my iPod and my iTunes Library. I made a smart playlist and based on off the other, but while all the songs of the playlist are there, the order is not restored. Is there a way to do this so that the smart playlist is updated if I update the original AND the order of songs is the same.

(Reason why I have to do this...)
I'm using a MacBook, two iPods, setting it up so I can use both of them on this by only updating certain playlists to certain iPods, ect.

I have a 20GB and a 2GB Nano. I can store all of my music on the iPod, and only some on the Nano. So I want certain playlists on one and not the other, but I would like to only have to update my iTunes playlists and have the Smart Playlists updated off of that. I get that to work, just not the order of songs to work. Anyone have any suggesions?

IF NOT, APPLE, MAKE THIS POSSIBLE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I CAN'T IMAGINE IT BEING THAT HARD TO IMPLEMENT.

Up until today, I've been syncing my music between iTunes and my iPhone despite using Match between my Macs. Is there any documentation for how playlists are sorted on the iOS device? It's not either alphabetically or matching the iTunes display. On my iPhone, they seem to be all jumbled up. Some smart playlists appear at the top of the list, playlist names that start with numbers are at the bottom of that list instead of the top as in iTunes. Following that is a mixture of folders and non-smart playlists. This batch is really odd. In an effort to determine sort order, I renamed all my folders so they start with "aa ". The sort order on the iPhone seems to be ignoring the "aa " and mixing folders with non-smart playlists based on the remainder of the name. Ditto if I use "-" or "_" as the prefix. If I can figure out the pattern, I should be able to rename playlists to make them sort the way I want, but so far I haven't figured it out.Download All. Is there some logic to when a playlist gets a download all button? Some of mine have it and some don't. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. Playlists in or out of folders may or may not have the button. The only thing that might begin to be a pattern is that all four non-smart playlists that show up on the phone have it. The problem is I have over 70 smart playlists that have most of my music.

DB:2.74:Some Unchecked Smart Playlists Syncing xd

    Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated!

My iTunes is set to sync only selected playlists with my iPhone. While all of my checked playlists sync, so do some of the unchecked playlists as well. The only unchecked playlists that sync are smart playlists. Also, not all of the contents of the unchecked playlists sync. For example, one smart playlist has over 1,000 tracks on iTunes but that playlist on the iPhone only contains 11 tracks.

I thought perhaps if a track was contained in a checked playlist and present in an unchecked playlist, iTunes was forcing the appearance of the other playlists on the iPhone. While I still think there's a connection, spot checks show tracks which exist in checked playlists appear in other unchecked playlists which are not present on iPhone.

i've been having the same problem with my iphone/itunes. i erased what i had and re-loaded, tried manual sync, etc. to no avail.

    here's something i noticed:

i have a smart playlist called "jazz". it's unchecked for iphone syncing purposes. however, i have a "coltrane" smart list that IS checked. for whatever reason, the unchecked jazz list is prompted to show up on my phone, but only with songs that appear on other, checked playlists. so the miles davis songs that belong under the jazz list don't appear on my phone, because they're not synced up on another playlist. it doesn't appear like the songs themselves are being doubled; just the playlist(s) they're on.

but still...doesn't make sense the way it looks.

    DB:2.74:Smart Playlist Help 88

    Hi,

I have created many Smart Playlists, and I think they are great! Some of the lists have many conditions in them. My questions are ...

How can I backup the Smart Playlists so that I can restore them in case of computer failure? I don't mean just the list of songs in the list. I want to restore the actual conditions that make up the Smart Playlists without having to recreate them.

Can I transfer the Smart Playlists to another computer?

I have already tried to export the Smart Playlists, and then restore them, but they restore as regular playlists - not as Smart Playlists. I searched, but couldn't seem to find the answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
