    Hi All,

I am new to OWB10gR2. While creating Dimesion, we can select whether we want that dimesion to be SCD Type 1, SCD Type 2 or SCD Type 3. This option was not available on any other pervious version of OWB. We created ETL logic to achieve SCD 2 and 3. Now whts the use of this option in 10gR2 will the OWB will build its own logic and take care of it internally OR we still need to create logic to achieve SCD 2 and 3. Any help would be appreciated.

    DB:5.04:Implementing Scd-1 And Scd-2 In Odi sz

I guess SCD-2 should be implemented in following way.

    1) Change your data store olap type to "Slowly changing dimension"
    2) Go to list of columns that were reversed.
    3) Right click on the column on which you want to mplement SCD
    4) Go to description. Change Slowly Changing Dimension behaviour accordingly.
    5) I guess these option will be used by the KM.

I havn't tried this. Let me know if you succeed.

DB:4.56:Scd Type 2 And Ora-00923: From Keyword Not Found Where Expected km

    LS,

Problem was caused by the "dynamic" filtering I did.

I definied some Constants, which I let 'stream' into the INGRP1 of a Filter. Then I created a where-clause by the filter condition like "INGRP1.table_column = INGRP1.constant_column".
This appears to be far too dynamic, causing the ORA-00923.

Replacing the use of a constant by a function (which returns the same value as my constant) deals with this problem. Of course a static "INGRP1.table_column = value" also will work. I only wanted to make the involment of some parameters/constants visible within the mapping.
The Contants can still 'stream' into the INGRP1 of the Expressions, like UPDATE_DELTA_ROW and MERGE_DELTA_ROW, in order to put special values to the various attributes. Like column Date_Exp gets the value of INGRP1.Yesterday, which originates from a constant that holds the date of yesterday.

Thanks for your hints. They put me in the right direction.

    Regards,
    Andr

    Hi,

The New Output link from SCD Task only gets records.
Historical Attribute Insert Output linkis not getting any records even though there are upserts in the input.
I don't know why updates are not happening.

DB:4.56:Scd Update Is Not Working 7m

You will see this behaviour if the SCD component (NOT a task) can't match business keys from your source data flow to your dimension table.
The most common causes of this behaviour are:

Case-sensitivity in the matching. ALAN won't match Alan. This is pretty easy to spot.
Space-sensitivity in the matching. Alan won't match Alan. This can be very hard to see. Check if your source has spaces in it by using a Derived Column component, and adding a new column that uses | [Column]
    | as an expression. You'll see |Alan | if they do have spaces at the end. You should also check your dimension table - are those columns VARCHAR or CHAR? CHAR
adds trailing spaces. VARCHAR removes spaces (by default).

    It depends on your requirements.

type 2 is useful to maintain full history (using version_no, flag and dates). type1 is current and type 2 is partial history.

    ex:

type 2 mainly used to load the data into dimension and fact table loading.

Then I have all columns from the splitter going into the ingroup of each expression operator. Which source and target columns go to each of the expression operators? Can someone please clarify this for me? Thanks for your help.

    DB:4.52:Scd Type 2 xp

    Hi,

The way you define the load for slowly changing dimensions depends on the requirements that have been defined.

If you store the history of some of the attributes (but not all of them) then you select in the expression how you derive those values (following the data flow). The update statement is made based on the natural key on the record that does not have an end date (yet).

In general, if you follow the data flow you should be able to derive which values you need for your output attributes.

Good news: in the next major release of Warehouse Builder we will provide slowly changing dimension capabilities out-of-the-box.

    Thanks,
    Mark.

Hi Javier, thanks for your reply

Incremental key is a rownumber that just increments every row.

I believe, lookup won't help on the basis of employee id as the incremental key is assigned as employee dimension returns record.

Do you have some information regarding implementing SCD in SSAS solution?

Though in SSIS, there is a component called SCD but we cant use it here. So, looking to achieve this in SSAS.

FULLNAME - Add row on change
ADDRESS - Add row on change
ACCESTDT - undefined (because I want to insert the source date as it is)
    ACCEENDT - Ending Timestamp

Now all the columns populated perfectly and new row is created for an updated ACCSNO but the end date column (ACCEENDT) is popluated with NULL value.

Actually that will part of same task itself in SSIS
If you're using standard SCD task in SSIS, it will take care of all these aspects by itself. You just need to identify the attributes as Type and Type2
If you're planning to use another method like say lookup, you need to add the logic in data flow to handle the type2 cases also in the required branch
See this as an example where I've used lookup based on hash values for applying SCD type 1 and type 2 logic

    2. We keep a Previous Begin Date to allow a developer to travers history

The lack of a SK does not seem to be a problem, using the existing SCD KM, but the Previous Begin Date is. There is no type to select when defining the column. Is there a way to create my own SCD column types? If so where is this done?

I want to create a MOLAP "mart" from the ROLAP environment for a specialized analysis requirement ... part of the mapping involves some SCD Type-2 dimensions ... my question is : since MOLAP doesn't "play" the SCD Type-2 game, when I map a ROLAP Type-2 dimension into a MOLAP dimension, are the "historical" rows in the ROLAP dimension brought into the MOLAP "cube" ? or just the "current" dimension rows ?

No. Using journalizing is options for the SCD 2 processing. The KM copes with removing all un-necessary data.
And to Sequnces, use RDBMS sequence rather than ODI where possible, as this will give the best performance, ODI will not have to handle data row-by-row.

Since you want to SUM only the Amount metric linked to the isCurrent dimension, I think you can make use of Filter function in MDX

    SELECT
    [Measures].[Internet Sales Amount] ON 0,

    FILTER

    60 millions records
50 columns (including 17 to be tracked for changes)

Has anyone come across a similar case?

Mark or Igor- Is there any benchmark available on SCD 2 for large dimensions?

    DB:4.03:Scd 2 Load Performance With 60 Millions Records 7f

    Rene,

Not that I have any specific benchmarks, but it is not necessarily the size of the dimension that defines how much time it will take to load (assume you do some proper indexing that enables you to find records quickly), but rather the incremental update (I assume that is way less than 60 million records).

    Thanks,
    Mark.

This is a common situation in a data warehousing environment were the time dependacy of an object (master data or Hierarchy) is not maintained in the source system but needs to be maintained in the DW system. Lot other ETL tools automatically provide the SCD type-2 functionaly which automatically makes the previous record in the DW system as a old record and update the "SCD to-date" field either system date - 1(day or sec) and inserts a new record with "SCD From-Date" as system date when ever an attribute that we are tracking for "SCD type-2" changes value which is different from the value that is present in the DW.Can we achieve the same in BW? Check your physical table "sk_tar.SCD_1" if the columns you're using are actually in this table. What can happen: You change table metadata for a table which already exists as permanent physical table. Depending on the transformation/load process the physical table doesn't get updated/recreated and is out of sync.

The SAS code in DI gets generated based on metadata so there it can happen that for example a keep statement gets generated for columns which don't exist in the physical table.

Easiest way to get around this: Delete the permanent physical table and then re-run your DI job.

    Hello,

I am trying to turn a simple EmployeeDim dimension into a Slowly Changing Dimension (SCD), but deployment always fails

    Here's what I did:

    -
Created a surrogate key (employee key) which is the PK for the Dim

    -
Kept the relational DB PK as Business Key / Alternate Key

    -
Added a Current column to DWH (and DSV)

    -
For SCD type 2 attributes I am trying to create the following attribute relationship: Surrogate Key one-to-many Business Key one-to-many SCD Type 2 Attribute

Deployments start failing once I change the attribute relationships as described above.

I believe it got something to do with setting the Key Column for the SCD Type 2 Attribute. I tried using the Surrogate Key, the Business Key and a combined key (collection) with SCD Type 2 Attribute
    itself none works.

I must say I ctually dont fully understand how the dimension should work. I understand that the Surrogate Key's
    AttributeHierarchyVisibleState
    should be
False, so the cube be browsed via the Business Key, bt I dont understand
how SSAS will know which is the Current member. Anyway since I cannot build the cube i
    cannot test it yet

    Many thanks!

I have a Dimension with a hierarchy structure as described below:
Product Business Code -- Product Category Code -- Product Segemnt Code -- Product Code.
The Product Business Code Product Category Codeand Product Segemnt Code all participate in a SCD Type 2 change. So for the same Product Code we have the the other values in hierarchy changing and this voilates the hierarchy relationship of having
only 1:N relationship moving top to bottom in a hierarchy, as a ProductCode which is at lowest level now has two different SegmentCodes after the SCD Type 2 change which created a new row.
The Process Update in dimension behaves unusually and gives me incorrect data in hierarchies.
I need help to understand how this can be fixed, so as to have correct data in dimensions hierarchy.Vinish Viswanathan

DB:3.92:Attribute Relationship In Scd Type 2 Dimension sz

    Hi ,

If you are saying that all the four attributes in this relationship are scd-2
Product Business Code -- Product Category Code -- Product Segemnt Code -- Product Code
then you should make sure that the attribute keys of these attributes are unique even if the codes are the same (when you insert new rows for the attribute changes)
I am assuming that the Product code is the key attrbute in your dimension.
So, if Product Segment code for a product code has changed, you would generate a new row in the dimension table with a new surrogate key (the best approach) for that prodct code but this new row would point to the new Product segment code. It goes without
saying that you should have startdate and endate columns in your dimension table to identify latest and historical versions of the rows.
Surrogate keys are used to make the rows unique as opposed to using the natural keys (codes) and your attribute key should be based on these unique keys.
If you want to avoid using surrogate keys then you will need to use a composite key (code enddate) to make the rows and the relatiohshipsunique

what is incremental loading how to design incremental loading in scd type 2...

    DB:3.92:Incremental Loading... 3d

    Hi santhosh,

"incremental laoding" as the name implies that the "data in source is incremented on hourly daily or monthly basis, incremental here means data is continuously added into the source", now when you implement a mapping for incremental loading then you have to run that mapping daily or on monthly basis, when you run the mapping then in that case you only wnat the current record to be fetched from source inspite of fetchin all the records. this fetching of current record and loading into the target is called incremental load.

now there are lots of method to implement the incremental load but the 2 best methods are

    1. Using Parameter file - pull the data from source system on the basis of updated dates which is taken from parameter file.

    2. using IJT(Informatica job control) - use pre session and post session SQL query in session to pull data from Source based on date from job control table. and simultanously updating the job control table with latest date.

Which one you prefer depends upon with which you are comfortable or more properly a matter of client requirments..

If my answer helps you than mark it as a correct or Helpful answer.

    Thanks, hsbal

DB:3.90:Binary_Checksum Function For Scd Type In T-Sql 37

Not being a data warehouse guy, I will have to admit that my notion on slowly changing dimensions is foggy.
But be careful with (binary_)checksum. The algorithm is not very sophisticated, and the value space is only 32 bit. There is a considerable risk that two different values are different have the same checksum.
You can use checksum to deduce that two values (or sets of values) are indeed different as an initial sieve, but you cannot use checksum to deduce that two values are equal.
Given that, I am not sure how you could use it in MERGE.

DB:3.83:Using Scd Type 2 And Surrogate Keys For Single Table In Job cd

If it's a true hierarchy then it's your design decision how you want to organize the data.

    In one table it could be: {Item_RK, ItemID, groupID, itemtypeID,....}

When loading using SCD2 then Item_Id would be the business key, all the other columns would be under change tracking.

    With 3 tables:

    - ItemType_Ref {ItemType_RK, ItemTypeID,....}

    - Group_Ref {Group_RK, GroupID,...}

    - Item {Item_RK, ItemID, Group_RK, ItemType_RK....}

If you go for a 3 table approach then you would first load ItemType_Ref and Group_Ref and then look up the RK's via the ID's before loading table Item.

If you're having full loads then I would go for a 1 table approach, if it's delta then I would eventually go for a 3 table approach.

The reason for 3 tables in case of delta loads: If something like the Group_Description changes then in a 3 table approach this would simply cause a new current record and all is set, in a one table approach you would have to update all records in the table with the new description (with a full load this would happen "automatically").

As a database purist one would say that you always need to generate keys. From a more pragmatic perspective it might well be o.k. to use the ID's as provided from source and not generate RK's at all. In such a case you wouldn't need to look up the RK's but you would simply use the ID's in table "Item".

You can also use the MD5 function to create a message digest (digital signature), which is nearly unique for each string that is passed to the function.

Using this function you can quickly check if one or more variables (from a list) have changed and generate or not an SCD type 2 or 3 record.

DB:3.77:What Is The Difference Between Scd Type 2 3? How To Implement Scd Type 3 In Bods? m7

    Hi Sabarish,

    SCD- Slowly Changing Dimensions

SCDs are dimensions that have data that changes over time. The following methods of handling SCDs are available:
Type 1 : No history preservation
    v Natural consequence of normalization
Type 2: Unlimited history preservation and new rowsv New rows generated for significant changesv Requires use of a unique key v New fields are generated to store history datav Requires an Effective_Date field .Type 3: Limited history preservation
v Two states of data are preserved: current and old

Slowly Changing Dimension Type 1(SCD Type1)For SCD Type 1 change, you find and update the appropriate attributes on a specific dimensional record. The new information simply overwrites the original information. In other words, no history is kept.
    Example
Customer Key Name State 1001 Christina Illinois
After Christina moved from Illinois to California, the new information replaces the new record, and we have the following table:
    Customer Key
    Name
    State
    1001
    Christina
    California

    Advantages:

This is the easiest way to handle the Slowly Changing Dimension problem, since there is no need to keep track of the old information

    Disadvantages:

All history is lost. By applying this methodology, it is not possible to trace back in history. For example, in this case, the company would not be able to know that Christina lived in Illinois before.

Slowly Changing Dimension Type 2(SCD Type2)
With a Type 2 change, we dont make structural changes in the table. Instead we add a record. A new record is added to the table to represent the new information. Therefore, both the original and the new record will be present. The new record gets its own primary key.

In our example, recall we originally have the following table:

    Customer Key

    Name

    State

    1001

    Christina

    Illinois

After Christina moved from Illinois to California, we add the new information as a new row into the table.

    Customer Key

    Name

    State

    1001

    Christina

    Illinois

    1005

    Christina

    California

    Advantages:

This allows us to accurately keep all historical information.

    Disadvantages:

This will cause the size of the table to grow fast. In cases where the number of rows for the table is very high to start with, storage and performance can become a concern.

This necessarily complicates the ETL process.

Slowly Changing Dimension Type 3(SCD Type3)
With a Type 3 change, we change the dimension structure so that it renames the existing attribute and add two attributes, one to record the new value and one to record the date of change.

In our example, recall we originally have the following table:

    Customer Key

    Name

    State

    1001

    Christina

    Illinois

After Christina moved from Illinois to California, the original information gets updated, and we have the following table (assuming the effective date of change is January 15, 2003): Customer Key Name Original State Current State Effective Date 1001 Christina Illinois California 15-JAN-2003 Advantages:
This does not increase the size of the table, since new information is updated.
This allows us to keep some part of history.
    Disadvantages:
Type 3 will not be able to keep all history where an attribute is changed more than once. For example, if Christina later moves to Texas on December 15, 2003, the California information will be lost.

Hope this is helpful to you.

    Thanks,

    Richa

If you are using SQL Server 2008, have you tried turning on Change Data Capture and tracking on the table?
It is quite easy to set up and you only need to look in the tracking table for all changes to your table. The tracking table will keep a record of both the changed record and new record in case of updates.
You can implement it as SCD 1 as your initial question shows and then with Change Data Capture, you can retrieve the old record into the extra History table.

Well, all I can tell you it seems that the SCD uses this as a standardized way to do comparisons between source data and the corresponning valid row in the dimension table.

I belive for dimensin with long records it could be better performance. either way, it simplifies the coding in the comparison step, the alternative would be somthing like

In 9.2 type 1 will also be supported.

Of cource, you are free to implement your own loader which could support other types than no 2, by using the transformation Generator Wizard.

I'm not aware of any limitations of how many Look-up transforms that could fit into a job. But as a general rule, one should put to much into a job, it would not be good from a maintenance point of view.

It's not clear how your logic works. How are you defining end_date in the flow/SCD Type 2 transform? What does your transaction/input data look like?

If you wish to change an end date if it's not current row, should either be done only if it's not part of change tracking (set it as Type 1 columns), or has to be done as an ad-hoc administrative activity.

    Hello Kishan,

could you please be a little bit more specific and provide an example? I really can't imagine why a natural key should change. If it changes it's another item that has nothing to do with the item described by the old natural key. What I'm trying to say is if your natural key gets "broken" then it's not your natural key. Try to build one on your own. You can for instance concatenate the old natural key with a sequence number and use that construct as your natural key.

    DB:3.56:Change Data Capture In Scd Type 2 ? 9k

    Hi All,

May you all please avoid my confusion about change data capture. I understand it is extracting the changed data. Are we going to use this CDC Table as source in SCD type 2. How exactly this is used in realtime. Appreciate your help.

    Thanks,

    Venkat.

    DB:3.56:Change Data Capture In Scd Type 2 ? 9k

    Hi,

If you have CDC data directly available from source then you can use it directly for SCD type 2 appraoch. You have to compare the source rows based on key columns from target and check for new inserts/ upserts.

For SCD2 you can maintain on the basis of : 1) Flaging 2) Date range or 3) Versioning

    DB:3.56:Dynamic Cache.. kj

can u please any one explain dynamic cache with scd type 2 effective date method.....asap...?

    DB:3.56:Dynamic Cache.. kj

    Hi santhosh,

If you are not moving/comitting data to target/lookup as it gets changed you are doing good to yourself because when you lookup next time you are not getting the most recent info, but instead you will get the info that was there before (stale) the session started. Also, you have some new inserts into target you will not even get anything back in your lookup.

Let's take Type 2 dimension as an example. Let's say you have following data in your source and target customer tables.

    before session is run
source: customer table (address changed multiple times):
    "cust id' "address" "create date"
    1 street address1 jan 1
    1 street address2 jan 2
    1 street address3 jan 3

    target: customer dimension
"surrogate key" "cust id" "address" "effective end date"
    no rows

When the session runs, if you use static cache and big commit interval, the static cache when built will be empty through out the session because at the beginning of the session there is no data in customer dimension. Now the first record in, there wont be match on lookup, you will insert into target. Second record in you wont find match again on the static lookup and you will insert a new row but would not know to update the end date of the first customer row. If you use dynamic cache, you would have inserted the first customer row into the cache and the next time you lookup you will find a match. The lookup would update the cache row with address 2 and jan 2 for next time use. And you can compare the old and new values to know that the address data changed and based on this you can insert a new row and update the existing row. This goes on the same for the third row.

    DJ

I implemented SCD type 2 with the SCD IKM. Everything works, I get no errors. When i run the interface and there is a change in the column that is "overwrite on change" the data gets overwritten successfully. But if there is a change in a column that is "add row on change" nothing is added, no new version. Any ideas?

Dear expert- i'm stumped w/ dup condition typ_ZTS* in shipment cost document. i created a new key combination

    1. company code/ transportPlanPt/ carrier

    2. transportPlanPt/ carrier

but still it dups this condition type. problem is that scd is created for CC 6xxx, however the rates are maintained on different cc 6xx1. In such circumstences can you advise how to restrict duplicate in SCD ?

I have an issue with programmatically capturing Slowly Changing Dimension outputs.
In the SCD transformation I have set Column Type property for one of the columns to be of type “Changing Attributes Updates Output” (Type 1).

    instance.SetInputColumnProperty(ID, this.SlowlyChaningDim.InputCollection[0].InputColumnCollection[15].ID, ColumnType, 2);

I have created an OledbCommand transformation to receive the Changing Attributes Outputs; the issue is I am not able to receive the output columns form the SCD hence not able to configure the outputs of SCD.

    this.SlowlyChaningDim.OutputCollection[3].OutputColumnCollection.Count (This returns zero)

Please advise me where I am going worng.

DB:3.53:Removing A Scd Type 2 Loader. Alternate Way To Generate Surrogate Pk? k7

I've been asked to remove the "SCD Type 2 Loader" transformation from a job in DI Studio. The reason is that it is superfluous, because everything can be handled as type 1. Removing the SCD Type 2 Loader transformation seems straight-forward, however it appears that it's also responsible for generating the surrogate PK used in the output table. What is the best alternative for generating a surrogate PK once the SCD Type 2 Loader transformation has been removed? And also, is there anything else I should bear in mind when removing a SCD Type 2 Loader transformation from a job?

    Thanks for your attention.

DB:3.53:Removing A Scd Type 2 Loader. Alternate Way To Generate Surrogate Pk? k7

I've just read this blog from Chris Hemedinger. Using uuidgen() could be a true alternative for creating keys. No more max_key lookups and the like - just generate new keys. Quite tempting I must say.

    DB:3.52:Scd Type 1 3 In Sas Code 8k

Any possibilities to produce a SCD type 1 SCD type 3 report in base\advanced SAS code? If so, I request you to provide me the outline.

    Thanks!

    DB:3.52:Scd Type 1 3 In Sas Code 8k

Please don't cross-post in several forums. See my answers in Re: SCD type 1 3 in SAS code.

About Type 3. Follow Patricks (and SCD Type 2 Loader transform generated code) guidelines for finding last valid record, and join with input data. You are probably looking at if/case assignment logic for moving old information to the "old columns" and placing up date information oin the current columns.

BTW, I rarely use Type 3 columns, especially not in conformed dimensions, never in a detail data store. Perhaps in some user specific information mart...?

If U dont mind Please Give me brief Explanation....?

DB:3.50:Any One Help Me The Following Lookups.. j1

    Hi Santhosh,

    For your 1, 2 Question:

See if you are going for SCD's their will be some critical columns in the requirement so for those columns if you will go for Un-connected Lookup than you have to go for multiple Lookups so it will be a performance issue.
Other than this Unconnected Lookup is having Static Cache in most of the SCD's we go for Dynamic cache because each run can have multiple matching records so these are some drawbacks so we mostly go for Connected Lookup.

    For your 3rd Question:

Use a dynamic lookup cache when you need to insert and update rows in the target. When you use a dynamic lookup cache, you can insert and update the cache with the same data you pass to the target to insert and update.

For example, you need to update a table that contains customer data. The source data contains rows of customer data to insert or update in the target. Create a dynamic cache that represents the target. Configure a Lookup transformation to lookup customers in the cache.

The following figure shows a mapping that has a dynamic cache:

    Dynamic Lookup Cache Example

The Lookup transformation uses a dynamic lookup cache. When the session starts, the Integration Service builds the lookup cache from a Customer_List table. The Customer_List table is also the target in the mapping. When the Integration Service reads a row that is not in the lookup cache, it inserts the row in the cache.

The Lookup transformation returns the row to a Router transformation. The Router transformation directs the row to the UPD_Insert_New or the UPD_Update_Existing transformation. The Update Strategy transformations mark the row as insert or update before passing it to the target.

The Customer_List table changes as the session runs. The Integration Service inserts new rows and updates existing rows in the lookup cache. The Integration Service keeps the lookup cache and Customer_List table synchronized.

To generate keys for the target, use Sequence-ID in the associated port. The sequence ID generates primary keys for new rows the Integration Service inserts into the target table.

You increase session performance when you use a dynamic lookup cache because you build the cache from the database once. You can continue to use the lookup cache even though the data in the target table changes.

    For your 4th Question:

    Connected Lookup :

A connected Lookup transformation is part of the mapping data flow. With connected lookups, you can have multiple return values. That is, you can pass multiple values from the same row in the lookup table out of the Lookup transformation.Common uses for connected lookups include:1. Finding a name based on a number ex. Finding a Dname based on deptno2. Finding a value based on a range of dates3. Finding a value based on multiple conditions

    Unconnected Lookup :

An unconnected Lookup transformation exists separate from the data flow in the mapping. You write an expression using the :LKP reference qualifier to call the lookup within another transformation. Some common uses for unconnected lookups include:1. Testing the results of a lookup in an expression2. Filtering records based on the lookup results3. Marking records for update based on the result of a lookup (for example, updating slowly changing dimension tables)4. Calling the same lookup multiple times in one mapping

Let us know if any other details are required.

    DJ

    DB:3.50:Regarding Scd Type 2 fc

    Hi friends

i am new to ODI, I am working on scd type 2,i want delete record from target
is possible or not,if not why we can't delete,if yes tell with clear description

    Thanks
    SATEESH

    DB:3.50:Regarding Scd Type 2 fc

You want to delete data in your target table ?
    Which data exactly ?

By the ways, the native ODI KM do not have steps to delete data that exists in target, but not anymore in the source, EXCEPT if you use journalization.

Without using journalization, you will have to modify your KM to add steps to:
    * detects the row that are in your target but not anymore in your source
    * delete these rows

For more details, please be more specific about your needs.
