    Hi,

during the last weeks my old PowerMac just went off for three or four times, pressing the powerswitch boots it again and everything was fine again for some days.

This morning I got the same thing but it did nothing when hitting the power button.

No fan, no beep, no light exactly nothing.

I reseted the PMU, took of the PCI-cards, removed the memory and tried another RAM, still the same.

The last thing I tried was removing the power cord, waiting some seconds, removing battery and waiting about an hour. Plugged the power cord back in, tried to boot, nothing.

As today is sunday I can't buy a new battery but I'll try this tomorrow, can this be the source of the problem?

G4 MDD, Dual 1.25, 1 gig. After much troubleshooting, either the CPU or Logic board needs replacement. How do I determine which is causing the problem? Went through many pmu resets, logic board resets, pram zaps, ram eliminations and the two times it booted after three days of this, the pointer froze again on the screen. Oddly enough I ran TechTool after one of the boots and all harware passed. Rebooted and used for 1 hour before antother freeze. Therefore it is either the cpu or logic board. How do I tell?

( Also not a drive issue since I took it out and installed it in another G4 to write this message.)

I'm not really familiar with details of the Mac boot up sequence and when ROM and RAM gets used, but as a point of comparison: I observed on my MDD after pressing the power button, a slight delay before the start up chime (external speakers on audio-output port) and then about 7 seconds before the light on my mouse comes on, plugged into keyboard, which is plugged into the built-in USB port. I think the start up chime and white/gray apple are built into the ROM, the Mach kernel gets loaded from disk, maybe some expert could clarify or confirm that, as to when RAM gets utilized or tested during the boot process.

Starting about 2 months ago, my 24" white iMac has begun suffering from graphics corruption after about an hour of World of Warcraft. For the first hour, all is well; then when the computer is hot, the corruption appears and the machine starts freezing up at times. The problem clearly corresponds to the temperature of the machine; when it's "cold" there are no issues.

It's under warranty; is this something that's fixable?

    DB:2.78:Graphics Corruption In Wow 87

This is not a new problem actually, you iMac just runs too hot. I guess that Apple didn't design the cooling solution for heavy graphics use

The graphics chip (nv7600GT) in my iMac start to fail at around 75C which IMNHO is way too high anyway, and at that point the SMC has NOT raised the fan speed to compensate. This surely also leads to degraded part lifetime, so maybe thats the reason

Anyhow, get smcfancontrol or semilar and up your CPU fan speed (yes the CPU fan also cools the Graphics chip). Use iStat or semilar to watch the temps.

This has solved the problem for several iMac(white) users out there.

I myself use a hacked up "fancontrol" that I've modified to work on the iMac, that way the fan is automagically adjusted to keep temps within range, while keeping noise down when not loaded.

I have a a305-s6825 I am working on. It has had intermitten problems for over a year but have gotten worse lately. Randomly when you turn on the laptop it will take FOREVER (5-10 minutes) to boot into windows and when it does fianlly boot it freezes approximately every 8 seconds for 8 seconds (like it is trying to load or find something). When it boots up normally it takes less than a minute. Formatted and reloaded windows and same problem. Replaced hard drive, same. Replaced memory, same. Flashed bios with newest bios, thought that fixed it then an hour later and 30 reboots it is doin the same. Then I noticed the times it takes forever to boot that the cd drive does not show in my computer or device manager so I pulled the drive and it boots fine. I put in another drive and all was well for about an hour and 20-30 reboots then it is doing it again. As I said it is random as sometimes it does not do this for several days of normal use. Without a drive in at all I have had no problems. With the drive in and going to bios on every boot sometimes the cd drive does not show up there. Any suggestions on what can be done?

DB:2.69:Computer Initially Boots With A Temporary Login sk

original title: Preparing Your Desktop problem
After 1 year my HP Notebook, with Vista 64 bit, started "Preparing Your Desktop" when booting up which creates a temporatory login. I shut it down, reboot and it load my profile fine. This error is happening about every 3 times I boot up.

DB:2.69:Computer Initially Boots With A Temporary Login sk

Hi, all. This same problem started happening to my Windows 7 Professional system in July. To be clear, out of the blue I started to get the "Preparing your desktop..." message every time I logged into my account. Once logged in I would get the default
Windows 7 theme, a bubble message letting me know I had been logged on with a temporary profile, and all of my Windows and program settings entirely gone. Any settings changes I made would be lost on restart. I think it's safe for me to say I've tried all
of the advice I could find on the internet. After nearly three months of failed troubleshooting I think I've finally found a simple solution to the problem. The issue appears to be a corrupt user profile registry key. Deleting the key will cause Windows to
recreate it, thus purifying your user account without having to reinstall Windows or migrate to a new account.

    Here's what I did.

    1. Log in to an administrator account.
    2. From the Start Menu type 'regedit' (without quotes) and open the registry editor. If your profile is really screwed up this might not be possible. If you can't open the registry editor, try to create a new user account from the control panel, then log into
    that account and continue.

*** NOTE: At this point it may be a good idea to back up your registry in case you do something terribly wrong. To do this, select 'Computer' from the tree on the left, then hit File and Export. ***

    3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList. You should see a few subkeys with short numeric names and then one (or more if you have multiple user accounts) subkey(s) with a longer name filled with numbers. It should
    look like the image below.

    4. Select the longer-named registry key with the ProfileImagePath variable name of the account giving you trouble. Mine is "JM" as you can see in the image.
    5. Right-click that key (the entire folder selected from the tree on the left, not the variable) and delete it.
    6. Reboot the computer and log in to the account that was giving you trouble. You will see the "Preparing your desktop" message, but don't worry. Windows is simply recreating the registry key you deleted.
    7. Open the registry editor and browse back to the same location given in step 3. You will notice that Windows has recreated the registry key.
    8. Select the new profile subkey. It will now have a different value for the ProfileImagePath variable and it should look like this: "[Drive Letter]\Users\[User Name].[Computer Name]". Right-click the ProfileImagePath variable and click Modify...
    9. In the Value Data field, delete the ".[Computer Name]" part from the end so that only the user name path is in the field. Then press Ok.
    10. Reboot the computer once more. Then log back in to your account.
    11. Rejoice in the fact that your computer has been healed!!!

One thing I noticed after applying this fix was that I got a few hiccups where it looked like the problem happened again, but I hadn't been logged into a temporary profile; somehow some of the environment variables failed to get set properly. If this happens
you won't see the awful bubble message (see top of this post). This can be corrected by rebooting or running a batch file with these commands:

    set USERNAME=[User Name]
    set USERPROFILE=[Drive Letter]:\Users\[User Name]

where the terms in brackets are replaced with appropriate values. Then log off and log back on (or close explorer.exe from the task manager and open it again).

I would be glad to hear if this works for you. Please leave comments so others can know whether this is a reliable solution! Cheers and good luck!

    Strat,

I think Vidya has this exactly right -- something is corrupted somewhere in your profile, that is, the files and such that allow you log in and access to the data on the computer that is "yours".

You might create a new account on the computer, an account with Administrator privileges.

See if you can consistently log into that new account without it balking or acting weird.

If the account is OK, then you might start using it for your own. You can then copy over your personal files if you like - do this a bit at a time and log out / in to make sure you don't move something that is the cause of the trouble.

Remember to start your File History backups on that new account when you get it set up and working.

If the problem persists or you really do not want to create or use a different account, you can look at the following and decide if it is useful in this context:

    Hi,

I have a msi 7100 k8n sli platinum for a few months now. Initially I had no problems, but for the past few weeks I have frequent problems getting it to boot to post.

I have the Diagnostic bracket, and it frequently hangs at a memory error problem. Other times it proceeds to hanging at decompress bios to ram, and sometimes even displaying bios info on graphics card. Frequent resetting and powering on (30 times in a row) cause it to post perfectly and continue. On other times it just boots normally.

I rarely have stablility problems once I get past post and use my computer for the whole day with no issues. Then if i switch it off for an hour and try to turn it on i have the same problems again. I updated the bios to 3.8 but no difference and have gone back to 3.1.

I have disconnected the ide drives, graphics card, usb devices, keyboard, mouse, leaving only my sata harddrive, memory and cpu connected. The only thing I have not removed is my MSI tv anywhere master pci card, but I dont have any problems with it in windows or in my past computer for a few years. I have tried one stick of memory instead of two, and ran memtest for an hour which found no problems. I have reset the BIOS several times when trying unsuccessfully to boot (power off), but this doesnt help.

After repeated power cycles (worried about the toll on my harddrive!), itll just take off and away it goes happily! Power rails seem rock stable, except the Vcore seems to vary a bit 1.38-1.43V approximately, with cool quiet disabled. Fans are happily spinning and CPU temp is about 32-35C.

Its starting to drive me really mad, because I dont want to do without a computer for weeks (and my only TV as well!)... any advice appreciated! I dont have compatible system to test RAM, CPU or motherboard... The most frequent error is the memory error, but since the memory controller is on the CPU this doesnt narrow it down much.

I now get an error message on my computer about every half hour because MobileMe can't resolve this conflict. I completely restored the original factory settings on the iPhone and synced. The same three addresses came up again. How do I get rid of them?

I am about to restore my computer to factory settings.
I currently have three active installations of my Office 2007 on two separate partitions on the same computer. One of these partitions has Windows 7 Enterprise on it on which I have installed XP Mode.
When I do restore my computer, I will need to install Office 2007 three times as detailed above.
Can somebody please confirm that there will be Activation issue in relation to the three installations? The three installs will be taking place within an hour of each other hence my concern over possible Activation issues.

DB:2.62:Re-Installing Microsoft Office Home Student 2007 Three Times On The Same Computer c7

Doing 3 activations in succession like that is not an issue. It just represents you installing and activating on 3 machines in compliance with the license terms.

You should be OK, I think (unofficially)

From the 2007 license terms ... snip

    2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.
Before you use the software under a license, you must assign that license to a device.
That device is a “licensed device.” A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate device.

    a. Licensed Device. You may install one copy of the software on three licensed devices in your household for use by people who reside there

    /snip

The 2010 license terms get into virtualization that seems to limit it to one installation on a device, I think. But that is not a problem for 2007.

Sometimes USB devices can cause this problem. Try unplugging some things to see if it makes a difference. Also, your CMOS battery on the motherboard could have gone bad. Try taking it out to reset your system board.

I had to add my two cents on this. I had pretty much the exact same symptoms with 10.6.2 on my Mac Mini. However, the solutions listed here did not fix my problem. I also tried a few other things in Utilities with the hard drive and still no improvement. Any way, after I brought it into the Genius Bar it turns out the problem for me was a faulty keyboard. I guess the keys were stuck somehow so that on restart it was being told (through the stuck key) to boot in network mode. My new keyboard is on the way. I just thought I would share in case this can help anyone else trouble shoot things.

The video card oughta fix the problem, as far as Dell tech support goes, I don't think anything could ever fix the problem. Dell is known for having the absolute worst tech support of any computer company.

The USB ports on the back of the housing stopped working long ago, so I plug a MS Optical mouse into one of the two remaining front ports.

    I'm out of ideas.

    DB:2.56:Dimension 4550 Random Lock-Up 79

First this is the XPS Desktop section, not a support section for Dimension's.

If could be a software (which would be the Software/Windows XP section) or a hardware issue which would be the Desktops/General Hardware section.

With the rear USB ports not working, it could something as simple as reinstalling the Intel chipset drivers, to a complete reinstall, and an educated guess would be a software issue.  Lockups can be both hardware or software related and I would again suspect software.  If you have never done a complete reinstall, especially with the age of a 4550, I would suggest that as the first step.

If you need more assistance, probably the Windows XP software sectionw ould be the place to post.  HERE

    Hi everyone,

At first when I depress the power button nothing happens for about 30 seconds; after about 30 seconds, it will beep 4 times, pause and beep 4 times repeatedlyand it will not boot. Everywhere Ive read suggests it was a RAM problem, replaced the RAM three times, first time just bought some replacement RAM from NewEgg, other two times under warranty only to have the same result.

One a side note, the computer it out of warranty. Every time Ive replaced the RAM the computer will run for about an hour, then when its restarted it goes back to doing the same thing. Ive tried taking it completely apart (I work on PCs on the side) putting it back together. While I had it apart I applied to newer CPU/Heatsink paste. Ive tried pulling the battery and power cord, holding down the power button for 30 seconds, all only results in the same 4 beeps. Theres some thing about this computer thats frying the RAM, Im thinking maybe the motherboard. Im open to suggestions here, usually Im pretty good at figuring these things out, but Im stumped with this one.

OK, first things first, boot into safe mode by holding the shift key.
Double click on the hard drive icon.

Look for the Finder's status bar. It will tell you how many MB or GB are left.
Look in the View menu to make sure the status bar is not needed to be shown, if you can't find it on your Finder window.

Next click once on the hard drive and select Get Info in the File menu. That will tell you how much disk space you have.

If you can't tell us either, attempt a repair with the disk that came with the MacBook following these instructions:

Usually I have to power the computer on/off for about three times, until I finally get to see the welcome screen.

    Usuall it work like this:

    1) Turn on - bios - black screen

    2) Turn off - Turn on - bios - Win7 tells me it didn't boot properly and asks for recovery - I choose 'start normally' - black screen

    3) repeat step two once or twice

    4) success!

When the system finally boots, it's completey stable and fast.

Oh, and the SSD runs in AHCI mode.

I think I've found the problem: I reinstalled Windows 7, but this time without the Intel RST Drivers. The boot time is now somewhat slower, but currently stable.

Just thought I would post a follow up.  It turned out to be a deffective processor.  32-bit worked fine however it would flake out when trying to run 64-bit.  I had another identical laptop with identical processor that was running winxp so a processor that could only run a 32-bit OS would work fine.  I swapped the processors on the laptops and all is well again.  I can now run 64-bit Suse Linux on the laptop now.  I didn't bother calling Dell support even though it was under warranty.  I figured it wasn't worth the pain of trying to convince tech support that I had a defective processor that would only run 32-bit correctly but had a problem when trying to run 64-bit.  Anyway glad thats over.

From what you have described the problem sounds more related to the operating system than the BIOS which is the nature of this forum. If you haven't done so already you should consider posting your problem in the Software - Windows XP forum as that would be a better venue in which to find a resolution to the problem.

At no specific time, could be before OS boots-up, could be during or even after an hour, the screen goes darker and I message appears requesting that I press the on/off button for 5 seconds or so and then turn the computer on.
Sometimes takes 5/6 attempts to get computer on.

    Any clues anyone?

    Thanks

DB:2.53:G5 Imac Has Started To Request That I Shut Down And Restart s1

Yes that was the first thing that I did. I hit one with too much compressed air and blew it to pieces. So I ended up getting a new fan as well. I've been running the Apple hardware test that came with my iMac and sometimes it runs fine. Other times like just now it stops and I get error messages. It's reporting an script error 25 (not a struct or union element) in file #0: scripts\AHT_script.sc, line# 1234

Other errors are error 23 missing ':' in file #0:scripts\AHT-script.sc, line # 12422

Or invalid memory access at #SRR0: 00000000.06610684#SRRI:10000000.00003030

Any idea what this is all about?

Here's an odd one... three times tonight, my 20" iMac has crashed and rebooted in the same situation.

I'll have maybe three or four apps open at once, Mail, Camino, Safari, and iTunes. If I play music from iTunes, and then open Photo Booth, my iMac will restart about 5 seconds after the iSight turns on. There's no "please restart your computer" screen in different languages - it just restarts.

When OS X boots back up, the iSight green light is still lit, and it stays on until you open and close Photo Booth again. The other strange thing that happens is that a Finder window showing my hard drive and the network icon will appear, but in the aqua (not brushed metal) Finder window view, even though I did not have that window open prior to the crash.

Has anyone experienced this kind of crash?

    Hi Karen,

For a better understanding of the issue, I would need more information from your end.

Do you get any error message when you start the computer?Did you make any recent changes on the computer prior to this issue?
This issue could have occurred due to these reasons:
    1. Due to conflict between external devices.
    2. Due to conflict between third party applications.

Try the steps listed here and check if it helps:

    Method 1:
I would suggest disconnect all external devices connected to computer except mouse and keyboard. Check if it helps.

    Method 2:
If the issue persists, I would suggest you to download and install all the available Windows Updates including Optional Updates and check if it helps. You may also download and install latest device drivers for all the devices on the computer and check if it
    helps.

    Method 3:
If the issue persists, I would suggest you to boot the computer to Safe Mode and check if the issue occurs or not. If not, set the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.

    Step 1:
I would suggest you to refer the article
to boot the computer to Safe Mode.
Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)

    Step 2:
If the issue do not occur in Safe Mode, perform a clean boot and check.

Setting the system in a clean boot state will help to identify if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows

Note: After clean boot troubleshooting steps, refer to
the section "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" in the provided link to return your computer to Normal startup mode.

Hope this information helps. Reply to the post with updated status of the issue to assist you further.

DB:2.52:Maintenance Cleanup Disk - Computer Freeze Up Occurs Often Why xm

    Hi,

Did you receive Windows Stop responding error, when you are trying to perform “Disk Cleanup”?

If “No”, what is the exact issue that you are facing?

Have you made any recent hardware or software changes to the computer?

Try the methods mentioned below and check:

Method 1: Windows 7 hangs or freezes:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681286

Method 2: Perform “Check disk” and “System File Checker”, to repair the corrupted files and then check:

Step 1: Run “Check Disk”, and then check:
Important: While performing chkdsk (Check Disk) on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive then
chkdsk tries to repair that sector. And if any data is available on that sector might be lost.
    a) Start your computer in “Safe mode”:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
    b) Perform Check Disk, and then check:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors

Step 2: Perform System File Checker (SFC) scan, to repair the missing/corrupted system files:

DB:2.51:Black Screen After User Logs Out f1

This advice is practical, not technical. Your problem may be simple for you to fix or impossible. The most important thing you said is that you've had the system a week. Immediately call Dell Tech. Support and unless they diagnosis the problem for you and fix it immediately, send the system back under their 30-day refund policy. You'll probably not be able to get them to reimburse for shipping (their default policy is that you pay shipping both ways and they refund everything else), but the cost to you in shipping is minor compared to the hassle you'll have if this system is broken and they don't fix it at once.

Even the threat to send the system back will give you leverage that will be absent once the 30-day window passes. But don't use the threat unless you really mean to follow through. One of their "gotchas" is that your on-site support doesn't begin until the 30 days are up. At least, that was their default policy as of four days ago.

I realize that these comments sound negative about Dell, and certainly these forums are full of complaints about Dell's support. But my own attitude is not negative. I'm on my fourth Dell system, and I'm not someone who goes back to people who have kicked me in the teeth. My experience with Dell technical support has been consistently excellent. It is true that sometimes you reach a sales person or support person who seems to be a beginner. If you detect such a thing, simply say you have to go and ask what comment they are putting in your support record. Insist that they document your contact. Then hang up, wait a little while, call back, and get someone else. Dell isn't perfect and doesn't claim to be; that's why it provides support. As long as you are calm and reasonable with the person you're talking to, I have found every employee I've talked to, more than a few, with a consistent attitude of wanting to satisfy the customer.

I don't say that's everyone's feeling about Dell; but it is mine.

One last thing: Do check Dell Talk for other responses to your message. You may get lucky--someone who had exactly your problem may supply a simple fix. But that 30-day window is important to you--call Tech support.

    Regards,
    Larry Mayhew

DB:2.51:Mbp 17" Report, Occasional White Noise From Right Speaker ff

My 2.16Ghz MBP with 100GB 7200rpm drive and 1GB memory arrived a few days ago. Since then I have been installing software, running apps, and generally putting it through it's paces. I have also added a 1GB stick from Crucial. On the whole the MBP has been great, except for a few (hopefully minor) problems:

    1. It gets quite warm on the left palmrest, and gets uncomfortably hot between the keyboard and the screen. This is just during casual use, web surfing, downloading updates etc. The case temperature is about the same as my old 667MHz TiBook after it had been at 100% CPU for several hours (encoding video). I dread to think how hot the MBP will get doing something demanding.

    2. When closed the screen appears to be slightly bent, the gap at the two front corners is about 1mm wider than the gap at the latches.

    3. I have started to get hard crashes during the boot up sequence. Specifically after the grey apple I get the greyed-out multi-language reboot message and have to reboot. If I continue trying to reboot it eventually manages to get past the grey apple and boot up normally (usually this takes 2 or 3 attempts). I suspect this is due to something I've installed, possibly some Canon software for my MP750 printer.

    4. I have now heard a white noise/static sound coming from the right speaker on 5 occasions. Three of those occasions were while booting (one of them was when I first turned the MBP on! Not a good sign). The computer boots normally, but with this strange noise! The other two times where when I was launching apps. On each occasion the noise lasted about 3-5 seconds before stopping. It's more of a hissing noise, not a mooing or a whining noise. It sounds exactly like the speakers on a vinyl record player when the needle is in between songs.

Obviously all of the issue are annoying. However I'm only REALLY concerned about item 4. Item 1 was kind of expected after doing some pre-purchase research. Item 2 is annoying in a 1800 laptop, but I can reluctantly live with it. Item 3 is frustrating but I'm sure I can 'cure' it by removing software (it only started happening after a day or two of fairly heavy use). Item 4, on the other hand, is intolerable

Anyone have any suggestions? Advice appreciated. The nearest Apple store is about an hour away, so advice other than "take it to a Mac 'genius'" would be appreciated.

David, don't know if you're still living with the static hissing noise, but mine has been completely fixed! I had to take the MBP in when my battery swelled up to double it's size, and they figured out that it was the right fan was making that noise while it spins up to speed. Once it hits full speed the noise stops. That's why we only heard it during wake and boot. They replaced my fan, and I haven't heard the noise in months

I bought a MacMini in 2007 and have used it since to watched internet TV (hulu). About a month ago the MacMini started randomly freezing (about every 45 minutes to an hour), kernel panicking, or crashing when I opened any problem. A video of the computer during a crash can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbi-3nrWARk

Since then I have taken it to the Genius Bar three times and the problem still isn't fixed.

The first time the Genius reinstalled OSX. The computer started crashing again 45 minutes after I got home.

The second time the Genius said they thought it was a hardware problem and put it in for service. A week later they told me it wasn't a hardware problem but a software issue and it was fixed. The MacMini crashed 10 minutes after I got home.

The third time the Genius couldn't find any problem despite that fact I literally showed him a HD video of the computer crashing!

To be honest, I am at a loss for what to do. Since I cannot reliably replicate the problem in front of a genius, they won't (or can't) do anything to fix it.

Any suggestions would be greatly greatly appreciated.

Well if you have any spare ram lying around I'd try replacing your existing ram since in my experience what you describe i.e. random reboots hence impossible to replicate indicates bad ram
I'd run memtest if you haven't already to verify.

    Howdy,

New problem here on a computer that has been working fine for over a year, it is a Acer 5532 with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, just recently, it has developed a nagging problem, it will boot, then immediately crash, display a blue screen for about 1 second,
to quick to read the error, then reboot. It does this two to three times before the computer finally settles down and boots to the desktop. I have let it set without doing anything with it and anywhere from an hour to 5 hours later, it will crash and reboot
    again...

Again, this is an Acer with an AMD TF-20, single core, ATI HD3200 built in video, I have installed all of the latest drivers, updated the BIOS to the latest revision to no avail..

This is the second Acer I have had this problem on, and the last one, I tracked down all of the hardware drivers and simple reverted back to XP SP3, which was fine, but this computer is a friends and she really does not want to revert back as there are not
a full set of drivers available for it.

Any help anyone can provide would be great, I know this is not a isolated problem, I have googled till my fingers are bleeding and there are lots of people that are having this type of problems and it has been happening for a couple of years.

    Thanks.

    Hi MT,

I suggest performing a Startup Repair to see if it resolves the issue:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7

You may have some hardware failing, you can chIeck the Asus site for a diagnostic tool to test with.
I suggest removing all peripheral devices except keyboard, mouse and monitor to see if it helps.

2 weeks ago my backlight went out on me. I replaced the inverter-board and everything was working fine. I had replaced superdrives in the same model so this was a no brainer.

Today however I tried to restart the machine and it only boots about half the time. One in 3 boots actually have a startup chime.

I cannot get video mirroring to work with a S-video cable or DVI.

Since the machine usually refuses to chime I have no idea if my PRAM resets are working and I have reset the PMU about 20 times in the last hour trying to get this thing to work.

    Any suggestions?

    DB:2.49:Whole Lot Of Trouble. mj

If your VRAM isn't passing the hardware test, you need a logic board. The VRAM is soldered on and can't practically be replaced. If you're a true magician with a soldering pencil I suppose you have nothing to lose by trying, but the chances that you can succeed are very small.

If your hard drive was working fine just before you put it back into the Powerbook, you may have damaged the HD cable in removing or reinstalling it. A number of people have reported that that cable is surprisingly delicate and can be damaged even with careful handling. I wouldn't have said that based on my own limited experience with them, but apparently it's true.

When i am playing games like WoW or Civ 4 my computer shuts off. It shuts off after no more than a half hour of use. This has happened to me 4 times in a row tonight. I had the computer off all day. I turned it on this evening and after a half hour it just turns off. The computer is about 3 months old. I am very frustrated.

DB:2.48:My Computer Turns Off Randomly fc

It doesn't matter how long you've been running the computer, the heat can build up fast. On my iMac, I can shut my computer down overnight, boot it up in the morning, and the temp on the CPU will be around 114 degrees F. However, if I start to do anything intensive like rendering video or playing a game full screen the temp reaches the point where the fans have to kick in high gear w/in about 5 minutes. So 30 minutes is plenty of time to get the heat built up. Besides, I think that the new C2D's are supposed to run cooler, so that means that the temp limit will be reached faster.

Also, like myhighway suggested, the RAM might be insufficient enough to do graphics-intensive tasks or other RAM utilizing tasks. When I got my iMac, it had 512 MB of RAM. That barely cut it for rendering video. Even with 512, it took over 2 hours to render just an hour of video. After that I got another 512 stick from Apple, and the rendering is real-time now. Also like myhighway suggested, the 3rd party RAM you put in there could be faulty, leaving your computer with just 512 MB of usefull RAM.

    Hope this helps

You are seeing the "Common Tasks" and it is a known issue in Windows XP and it happens when the desktop.htt file entry in registry gets corrupted.

And if anything detect remove them.
Also check your BIOS setting, it is one of F keys (F1...F12), during booting it will say which one is it or you could have a look at your PC guide( it is different in each system depend on BIOS model) and check if it set to boot up or not.

    IHelp anyone --

'm running a new Dell 1901 FP LCD monitor. I've been using it for about 30 days and continue to have the same problem whenever I boot up my desktop machine (Pentium 4; Nvidia GeForce 2 MX-200 32 MB Video Card). My P4 boots up no problem, but when it doeseither the monitor starts up in a mode where the screen is covered with vertical white bars and the data being displayed looks like it is being viewed through heavy white draperiesORthe 1901 FPstarts up in some odd resolutions in which half of the pixels are turned off, making it impossible to read the screen. I've discovered that If I reboot 2 or three times -- and turn off and turn on the monitor before restarting the desktop system -- then occassionally the monitor screen will boot correctly and away I'll go until the next day when I need to boot the machine again. Also, I recently updated by Video Driver software to see if this made any difference, and so far it doesn't seem to have changed anything.

I've messed around turning off and on Standby Mode, Hibernate Mode, etc...and none of these powersaving features make any difference. Once the computer has been off for a few hours, I have the same trouble restarting the monitor each time. It doesn't matter if the computer was previously in Standy, Hibernate of just completely turned off. More perplexing still is that I can wake my machine from either Standby or Hibernate after it is has been doing this for an hour or so and all is well, but if I leave it overnight, then I'm back to having weird boot up and monitor restart problems.

Dell -- PLEASE DON"T TELL ME TO TURN OFF HIBERNATE AND STANDBY. I've already done so and this has no effect on the problem I'm having.

Is it possible that the monitor has these start up problems in the morning because it is COLD? Our house is not too cold, but at night we turn dow the thermostat to around 66 degrees, although in the morning the heat comes back up to about 70 before I boot my machine.

Any ideas from users who may have experienced similar problems would be helpful.

I have tried installing the software about a dozen times on my home server.  The primary hard drive is a 36.4 gb SCSI drive, the secondary is a 250 gb ide drive.  When the software installs it installs to the IDE drive then when the computer boots it boots to the SCSI.  I have installed my SCSI drivers when the software asks for them, but it seems to look at the SCSI as being drive 2 and doesn't give me the option to select it as a boot drive.  What am I doing wrong?

DB:2.47:Cant Install To Primary (Scsi) Hard Drive 93

WHS hardware requirements state that the minimum size for the system drive is 80 GB. This limit is enforced in setup; you can't install on a drive smaller than about 65 GB. So what's happening is that WHS is installing on the only drive it will fit on. Your BIOS is set to boot from SCSI, where nothing is installed, so that's the source of your problem. There are several stages to setup from the DVD. First is a graphical stage, then an automatic reboot followed by the familiar text-mode, then many more reboots to graphical interfaces as first Windows Server 2003, then WHS components, then various patches are installed. So I think you're seeing a (sort of) normal installation process.

D4512 - No response from server. You may have Internet connectivity issues or the server may be unresponsive.D3505 - Service disconnected. You may have Internet connectivity issues or the server may be unresponsive.
I've been over my connection several times and I can say that connectivity is not an issue. My connection is more stable than it has ever been as I've had BT engineers out to work on the line and even had them change the entire line to a better quality one.

When running a PS3 speedtest the results are:
Internet connection test: PassUPnP: AvailableNAT Type: 2Download: 4.7MbpsUpload: 284.6kbps
These are pretty close to the actual line speeds and when viewing connection strength I will always have around 97% to 100% signal. With that in mind I've put the PS3 in a DMZ to minimise the risk of network issues, but am still getting these problems HELP!!!!

EDIT EDIT: D5027 now. STOP THROWING ERRORS AT ME :'(

DB:2.47:Dimension 2400 Will Not Boot zp

    Hi All

I have a 2400 for three months now. Many times when I switch on it will not boot until I unplug the electric power socket, plug in again and then switch on the computer again. When I do the unplug and plug-inprocedure it boots O.K. Why is this? Can anyone help?

    Cheers

Try a different outlet. If same problem occurs on the different outlet, try reseating the power cable from the system itself. When you say it doesn't boot, does any LED light up?
