    can i know the difference between Access specifiers and Access Modifiers in Java

    DB:3.81:Difference Between Access Specifiers And Access Modifiers 89

    As far as I can tell, they're the same. Sun's Java tutorial uses "specifier" but the JLS only uses "modfier" as far as I saw.

    You could try googling and see what you can come up with yourself.

    Access specifiers ::

    The access specifier determines how accessible the field is
    to code in other classes. Access ranges from totally
    accessible to totally inaccessible. You can optionally
    declare a field with an access specifier keyword: public,

    Some fonts are proprietary some aren't. Some fonts have special characters defined in them. Some of these characters require %%, some use a booster key (alt), some just redefine regular characters. If your clients don't have these fonts, or they have a font of the same name with different character definitions, using these characters will have disasterous results.

    DB:3.16:What's The Point Of Declaring A C# Script A Public Class? ak

    Actually, I'm a bit surprised that Unity does allow you to get through without the public. When omit the public it means that your class is accessible internal which means

    The type or member can be accessed by any code in the same assembly, but not from another assembly.

    (Source: Access Modifiers (C# Programming Guide))

    In Unity, as your scripts are accessed from the game engine runtime which is not your code assemblies (all scripts of the same language get compiled into a DLL; editor scripts and I think also plugins are compiled into separate assemblies), actually scripts which are not declared public shouldn't work, IMHO, because they are accessed from outside their assembly.

    So, in general, I'd always create public classes unless I really want my classes to only be within the current assembly (which is rarely the case - would be the case for very special purpose helper-classes, though).

    For a deeper understanding of encapsulation (which is what these access modifiers are all about), Wikipedia is a good starting point: Encapsulation (object-oriented programming). Another nice section about encapsulation can be found in the main Object-oriented programming article.

    DB:3.16:What's The Point Of Declaring A C# Script A Public Class? ak

    I can't say what UT's reasons are, but if you simply want to get rid of the warnings, you can (in C#) use pragmas - Disable warning messages, for instance

    #pragma warning disable 0168 // variable declared but not used.

    DB:3.13:Different Access Modifiers For Get And Set?! dm

    I think you've been reading the wrong documents or you misunderstood. Yes you can have different modifiers for get and set. You shouldn't have a public property without at least one public get/set but you can set them at different levels.

    The idea you may develop a property that you don't want to restrict setting the value only to internal classes but set the get function to public so that anyone can access it.

    It was my mistake. I misunderstood the issue.

    The problem was with the DataGridView control only. When I was inheriting from a form containing DataGridView (in ToolStripPanel.ContentPanel) with Modifiers=Protected, the DGV was not accessible on the inherited form.

    It required to be a custom DGV with designer attribute for the DGV to be accessible in an inherited form.

    If you don't write any access modifier in a java clas the default means package, so if you put the classes in the same package is fine.

    private
    public
    protected (like default but accessible from the subclasses as well)

    DB:3.03:Re: Structure Question z7

    Friends in C++ are classes that have access to private members of friend classes.
    In my example, since I didn't want Account to be accessible other than by Customer, Customer would be a friend class of Account. All members would be private other than to Customer methods, so to access data of an account, you would have to use Customer methods, such as Customer.addNewAccount(...), Customer.getAccountBalance(...), etc.
    Does that make more sense?

    Hi:
    Please, I will appreciate any help.
    I have a user control that contains 9 buttons. Each button has its Modifier Property Set to Friend. The usercontrol has a public Property that holds an array of objects. For other purposes I need runtime access to that property using reflection.

    The thing is, when I drop the control from the ToolBox to any new Winform, it automatically set the usercontrol1.modifiers property to Friend. So, because I need runtime access, I have to change it to Public so reflection could find the control as property.

    I have to do this for each form in the solution.

    What I would like to do is that, when I drop the usercontrol in the form, it sets the Modifiers property to Public.

    DB:2.99:Usercontrol Modifiers Property Default Value ??? kf

    Is that posible? Is there anyway to do that?

    TIA
    Sergio

    Hi,

    Don't we have a way to derive a base class with private access modifier in C#, cause this was absolutely valid in C++ and wondering why it throws an error in C#.

    Code Snippet

    Derivation in C# is public only.  Guessing as to why: it could otherwise make the Object class members inaccessible.

    Actually, the default scope of a class is 'package private', which means that if you don't specify any access modifiers, the class in question can be accessed by any other class in the same package.

    Hallo, I have the following problem/question:

    In the code below there is a Grid with a Canvas in it. I need to remove the canvas from the Grid. I want to leave the grid. What i want to do is add different canvases when i need to. Thats not a problem. However if i do that then the menu in the DockPanel

    How can i change this so that i can add different Canvases at runtime and that each time the Menu in the DockPanel and also the ContentControl keeps working?

    Hi,
    I have a Usercontrol which is designed as an MVVM application and hosted in another WPF application(by other parties).
    Usercontrol is composed of Left side and Right side usercontrols.
    To add the shortcut behavior on the usercontrols,i have defined Key Binding on the Left and Right side controls.
    Shortcut keys are defined for CtrlC,CtrlV,CtrlP,Delete,Page Up,Page Down,Home and End.
    UserControl.InputBindings
    KeyBinding Key=A Modifiers=Control Command={Binding Path= SelectAllCommand}/
    KeyBinding Key=None Modifiers=Control Command={Binding Path= DeselectAllCommand}/
    KeyBinding Key=X Modifiers=Control Command={Binding Path= CutCommand}/

    KeyBinding Key=V Modifiers=Control Command={Binding Path= PasteCommand}/
    KeyBinding Key=P Modifiers=Control Command={Binding Path= PrintCommand}/
    KeyBinding Key=Delete Command={Binding Path= DeleteCommand}/
    KeyBinding Key=Home Command={Binding Path= DisplayPageCommand} CommandParameter=1/
    KeyBinding Key=End Command={Binding Path= DisplayPageCommand} CommandParameter={Binding Path=PageCount}/
    KeyBinding Key=PageUp Command={Binding Path= ScrollUpdateCommand} CommandParameter={Binding Path=PageUpValue}/
    KeyBinding Key=PageDown Command={Binding Path= ScrollUpdateCommand} CommandParameter={Binding Path=PageDownValue}/
    KeyBinding Key=Up Command={Binding Path= ScrollUpdateCommand} CommandParameter={Binding Path=ArrowUpValue}/
    KeyBinding Key=Down Command={Binding Path= ScrollUpdateCommand} CommandParameter={Binding Path=ArrowDownValue}/
    /UserControl.InputBindings
    Problem is that shortcut works initially and in between shortcuts stop working (probably due to control losing focus).
    How to make the shortcuts work ?
    Please suggest.
    Regards

    VINUTHA

    DB:2.97:Key Binding Does Not Work Always In Mvvm Application dp

    An InputBinding of a UserControl won't get triggered if the user control has lost focus. You could possibly add the input bindings to the hosting window when the user control has been loaded:
    public partial class UserControl1 : UserControl
    {
    public UserControl1()
    {
    InitializeComponent();
    this.DataContext = new ViewModel();
    this.Loaded = UserControl1_Loaded;
    }

    void UserControl1_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
    {
    Window window = Window.GetWindow(this);
    foreach (InputBinding ib in this.InputBindings)
    {
    window.InputBindings.Add(ib);
    }
    }
    }

    Another reason why some input bindings don't work as expected may be that some controls, for example TextBox controls, catch and handle some key bindings themselves.

    Are pubilc (i.e "public class MyClass") and default (i.e. "class MyClass") the only two access modifiers a class can have?

    What is the scope of the default access modifier (i.e. if the class has the default access modifier can it be used outside the package it's defined in)?

    DB:2.95:Class Scope 3x

    The only two access modifiers for file scoped classes are public and default. Default visibility limits access to the named item (in this case a class) to classes in the same package in which it is defined.

    Inner (both static and otherwise) classes can also have access modifiers of private and protected.

    Does anyone know about this? In Visual C# Express Beta 2 in Form Designer I created my UserControl and added menuStrip and toolStrip in it. Their modifiers are "protected". Then I created my second UserControl, which is inherited from first. When I look through it in the Designer, all properties of menuStrip and toolStrip are "disabled", but they have to be "enabled"! What's the reason?In Visual C# Express beta 1 everything was "all right"!What should i do to change this "disabled" properties?

    DB:2.95:A Strange Designer Behavior With Toolstrip, Menustrip While Inheriting Usercontrols mc

    Microsoft have locked down Visual Inheritance for complex controls because they couldn't figure out how to manage the designer-serialization of child item controls over an inheritance tree in a simple way.

    A simple workaround (which achieves the same effect) is to drop an invisible toolstrip on the sub-form and merge it with the base-forms toolstrip at load time.

    I've developed MergableToolStrip controls you can use free of charge below.

    In the pricing TAB, Calculate Price Flag is set to "Freeze Price".
    These order are imported from iStore and as per oracle functionality the calculate price falg will be defaulted to "Freeze Price" only.

    Also need to check if the profile option "OM: Discounting Privileges" set to "Unlimited" resolves the issue permenantly.

    DB:2.82:Re: Bug(S) In Java Vm For Windows 2000!? 38

    Java defines the notion of compatible changes. Classes depending on other ones continue to work without recompilation even if the other classes undergo compatible changes (like adding new members, access modifiers getting broadened etc.) (In C++, you will recompile the class if it depends on other ones and they get new members.)

    We are discussing here uncompatible changes.

    The outcome in such situations might also depend on which class loader loaded the class and consequently to how much extent it is checked.

    DB:2.82:Re: Bug(S) In Java Vm For Windows 2000!? 38

    OK, lets ignore VJ++. It is not Java2. Neither is JView.

    Like Wsk7, I'm slightly puzzled at the lack of verification. Reading the JLS, the claim that this is a static check seems plainly enough stated. But then we meet the JVM spec and the presence of the verify option...

    Having read the VM spec, I can't see that it jives with the claim made in the JLS that the check can be made at compile time. The JLS would seem to support the default behaviour of the Sun JVM, but the JVM specification seems to imply that verification should always take place - however hard I've looked, I simply can't find a letout. Bleh - seems to be a contradiction there!

    Anyway, the -verify switch is there to catch the problem for anyone who is bothered. I can't say it's ever impacted me anyway, which is possibly the reason Sun turned it off. But the JLS and VM spec do seem to be conflicting here (maybe giving rise to the presence of the -verify option in the first place?).

    I think that pretty much wraps it up. Arguments about MS are irrelevant, since they don't compile Java2. I think that given the apparent conflict between the specifcations, the option to turn the check on is an acceptable compromise, just so long as it's possible. In the mean time, I'll comb through the VM spec to try to establish how this bizarre situation came about.--

    DB:2.77:How To Best Use Access Modifiers In The Real World za

    I am writing my first full-fledged Java application. However I am a bit unsure about which access modifiers to use for my classes and methods. All my classes are in one package and I do not plan to make them public for other people to inherit. So I have made all my class definitions friendly except for the one with the main() method. But what about the methods that are supposed to be used by the other classes in the same package; should I make them friendly or public? Are there any rules of thumb regarding this? I find the text books a bit too theoretical, how is this really done in proper applications?

    DB:2.77:How To Best Use Access Modifiers In The Real World za

    What do you mean with friendly? I don't think this exists in Java. Isn't this a C++ modifier (*try to remember*)?
    In Java, there are 4 modifiers:
    private
    package-private (the default)
    protected
    public

    First, think about the public API, that means ask yourself, "what functionality should the class have, what should it actually do?". These mehtods should be public. Then make the rest private.
    When you designed a class for inheritance, then the members which should be accessible by a subclass should be protected.
    But then it becomes a part of the public API, and should be documented.
    If there's a member that shouldn't be part of the public API and needn't be accessed by a subclass then make it package-private.

    Interface members are always public because the purpose of an interface is to enable other types to access a class or struct. No access modifiers can be applied to interface members..

    Hello,

    I am studying for the Sun Java Programmer Certification and would really appreciate some help on the following...

    If I declare a variable as public in a private inner class what visibility does it have?

    I know private variables are not visible to sub classes but are private methods visible to them?

    And finally is a Top-Level class the same as an outer class?

    Again your help is very much appreciated.

    My reply was based upon the below linksThe 'below links' do not support the statements you made in any way. They do not separate public/private/protected from static/final/abstract the way you did. The 'specifier' link is just using the wrong term, but it is 100% clear that both links are talking about the same thing. You invented a difference which doesn't exist. And your 'modifiers' link specifically talks about public/private/protected which you claimed aren't modifiers at all.

    You made it up.

    DB:2.72:Geting Object From Field With Field.Get(Object O) When Field Is Default kx

    I am experimenting with reflection and for my personal example I created a LinkedListString. Using reflection I can get to the header which is of type: LinkedList$Entry (a netbeans naming convention, I gather). Entry is a private static inner class of LinkedList. I'm trying to gain access to the values that the LinkedListString has via reflection. I was able to get this far: Field[] fields = test.getClass().getDeclaredFields(); Now using fields[0].get(object) where object is of type LinkedList$Entry, I get an error that says, "can not access a member of class java.util.LinkedList$Entry with modifiers "" ". I now know why this is, it's because the members of the static inner class Entry have default modifier access, meaning that they have no modifiers. How can I get around this in order to get to the information?

    Thx,

    Bolt

    DB:2.72:Geting Object From Field With Field.Get(Object O) When Field Is Default kx

    Field.setAccessible(). Since you are just learning, ok, but don't use this trick in production code. And don't abuse reflection in general.

    By the way ClassName$NestedClassName is not a Netbeans convention, it's a Java language convention for nested classes.

    So it would seem one could restrict the

    implement an additional overhead ?Plus that it would make it impossible for a package-private class to implement an interface.

    can we create a class with protected, private as access specifiers...
    Secondly, i wanted to know how can we declare a default access specifier for a variable and a class.

    Note: In complete reference it is mentioned that if we dont mention any access specifier it is public by default.. so how can we create a variable with default as access modifier...
    Thirdly what is the difference between access specifier and access modifiers....

    DB:2.71:Requistion For Inforamtion Regarding Access Specifiers For A Class dd

    (useless source of confusion in the language, if you ask me...)Yepp. Would be nicer if "public" is simply enforced.I always thought it would be nicer if "package" level access had an explicit syntax:
    public class C {
    public void pub() {}
    protected void pro() {}
    package void pac() {} //-- !!
    private void pri() {}
    }And that furthermore, class syntax forced you to specify access:
    public class D {
    void f() {} // -- syntax error, missing access specifier
    }(Or at least took private to be the default. ) The trouble with the
    current syntax is that it's too easy to forget to assign an access level to
    a method. I'm a fan of explicit syntax. I don't think these sorts of small
    synactic shortcuts save you anything or make code clearer. What you
    can't see can hurt you!

    Hello everyone,
    I am developing a documentation addin for VS2005 and VS2008 in C# (also to be used on C# code). Using members of the CodeVariable/CodeVariable2 classes, I am able to determine what C# modifiers are used on the fields defined in a type, such as “readonly”, “const”, and “static”. The members of CodeVariable that I use to determine the modifiers used are ConstKind, IsConstant, and IsShared. However, I cannot figure out a way to determine if the “volatile” modifier is used on a field. I could always parse the text in the declaration of the field to see if “volatile” is present, but I would rather solve this using the extensibility code model. Interestingly enough, the C++ extensibility code model has the VCCodeVariable class which contains a member “IsVolatile”, so I am not sure why the C# CodeVariable object does not contain a similar member.Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance and happy coding! -Mike Chambers

    why a struct cannot inherit from another struct or class, and it cannot be the base of a class?
    why abstract or sealed modifiers are not permitted in a struct declaration?
    why struct types are implicitly sealed?
    How structure is a value type?
     when to use structure?

    DB:2.69:C# Programming-Structure pz

    MJ,

    I think the reason you can't derive from struct is that there would be no way to pass an instance of the derived struct type to a method that expects an instance of the base struct type, which is what you'd expect to be able to do.  It works for reference types because all that is passed is a reference, and references are always the same size in terms of bytes.  This is not true fo structs, which vary in size.

    DB:2.68:Interfaces jk

    Not describing behavior has no relation with access specifiers. Classes cannot be private or protected either, at namespace level.
    Interfaces can be private or protected if they are nested.
    Private at namespace level would be identical to internal. Protected (accessible by anything inheriting from the containing class) wouldn't make sense at namespace level.

    Hi All,

    As per Sun, a class in java can be declared using either public or default access modifiers. It can't be declared as private or protected. Inner classes are exceptions.

    So, as per my understanding it is fine that a class can't be declared as private as private class don't make sense in java.

    But, my question is why we can't have a protected class in java??

    Please provide me the exact reasion why sun has not allowed the "protected" access modifier for a class.

    Why do we have access modifiers for constructors also ??
    I know that if a class A 's constructor is declared 'private' , then that class cannot be instantiated outside the class A. .That is, class A can be instantiated only inside class A and provide this newly created reference to the outside world through public getter method.

    Hello folks!

    Exception: java.lang.IllegalAccessException: Class sun.applet.AppletPanel can not access a member of class Hello with modifiers "" [- this looks so small, I only supposed they are 2 ""! Does it mean that modifiers are void, null, zero, missing? What these modifiers are?What should they do?]

    System.out.println(); // Finish the line
    }
    }

    The "Hello" class you wrote is not an applet, because you didn't do this, for example:
    public class Hello extends Applet (or JApplet)

    nor provide the necessary Applet/JApplet methods. Instead, you wrote a stand-alone class, called Hello (not hello, so if you want to run it from the command-line, it's java Hello). I would suggest you look into tutorials and get a handle on basic concepts first.

    DB:2.66:Re: "Private" Isn't Private Enough fp

    Because, IMHO, this breaks the spirit of Object
    Oriented Programming.No, it doesn't. The reason for access modifiers is, that a developer can define in which way a class/object can be accessed by others (e.g. by users of his/her library).
    There is no reason to not allow two instances of a class to have access at each other's private memebers. They are made from the same class, written by the same developer. So each instance should know what it can do w/ the private members of the other object w/o causing trouble.

    DB:2.66:Re: "Private" Isn't Private Enough fp

    Why are you guys spending time on this? It did seem the OP was kind of missing the point, but mattbunch's reply did raise one possibility--namely that the OP was unclear that you don't have to pass a reference to the object whose method you're calling. I've seen that quite a bit with people new to Java. In that context, his original question makes perfect sense.

    Something like "Given that I have to pass any object I want to operate on as a parameter, how do I write a public method to modify my object's state, but ensure that the right object is being modified?"

    If that is in fact the intent of the OP, then the answer of course is "Your 'given' is incorrect. There's an implicit this..."

    DB:2.66:Error When Using Mixed Access Modifiers On Properties xp

    In .NET / C# V2.0 you can have mixed access modifies on a singe property eg.
    [Column]
    public string CustomerName
    {

    get
    {
    }
    protected set
    {
    }
    }
    When you use this functionality with DLinq, and run a Customer query, DLinq fails to create the objects and gives an exception on invocation error.

    DB:2.66:Error When Using Mixed Access Modifiers On Properties xp

    In DLINQ, the same thing would happen if it was a read-only property (without a set). In this case, you need to set the [Storage] attribute to use the private member rather than the public property as follows:
    [Column(Storage = _CustName)]public string CustomerName {   get { return _CustName; }   set {}}
    With LINQ, you can not set non-public members (at the present at least) as part of the object initializer, so you are out of luck on those. I believe the teams are looking at setting the private fields via object initializers. It is possible with the reflection infrastructure at least.

    DB:2.66:Any Reason Why Members In An Internal Type Should Be Internal Rather Than Public? xj

    In C#, you can define a type as internal and members within it as public. You can also define the members as internal. Is there absolutely no difference between public and internal accessibility within an internal type? I'm curious to know what impact these accessibility modifiers may have within IL and the Common Language Runtime or with Code Access Security and reflection. Is it just a matter of style or convention, house rules?

    DB:2.66:Any Reason Why Members In An Internal Type Should Be Internal Rather Than Public? xj

    After looking further into security requirements for reflection, it seems that if the TypeInformation bit of the ReflectionPermissionFlag enumeration were set for a particular permission set, then code groups granted this permission set could bind to all members of an internal type, regardless of their defined accessibility, but could invoke only members defined as public. If the MemberAccess bit of the ReflectionPermissionFlag were also set, then code groups with this permission could bind to and invoke all members, regardless of whether they are defined as public, internal, private, etc.Edit:When you call SetValue on a FieldInfo object, a visibility check is performed. If the field is visible to the caller, the field is set to the value passed, otherwise a FieldAccessException is thrown. When only the TypeInformation bit was set on the ReflectionPermissionFlag for my calling code, I was able to invoke public members within a type in another assembly only if the type was also public. When the type was defined as internal and the member as public, the FieldAccessException was thrown. When only the MemberAccess bit was set, I was able to create instances of the type and invoke all members, static and instance, regardless of their defined accessibility. It seems to make no difference whether only the MemberAccess bit is set or whether both the MemberAccess bit and the TypeInformation bit is set; i.e., having only the MemberAccess bit set seems to imply TypeInformation permission. So, for purposes of security related to reflection, my experiment suggests that within an internal type you are not more vulnerable by having public members. Visibility checks are automatically performed by reflection that take into account the visibility of the type within which the member is defined.
    // This is the type I reflected on, which is in a separate assembly.

    Is there any way to override a method and change its access modifier? I'm making a subclass of JFrame, and its stability depends on the fact that the default clsoe operation is DO_NOTHING_ON_CLOSE. To make sure this isn't changed, I need some way to prevent the user from just using setDefaultCloseOperation(int) to change it to something that could cause loss of data.

    Of course I can't simply go the straightforward route and override it with different access modifiers, because that would just be too easy to be possible, like most things in programming.

    DB:2.66:Overriding Method Access Modifiers 71

    you won't need to re-do much code at all. all the code inside your component at the moment, that does the actual building of the frame, ie, all the 'add(new JButton("click me")' and stuff, can just be moved outside of the component. an oversimplified example:

    you did this:
    import javax.swing.JButton;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;

    // this uses inheritance
    public class MyFrame extends JFrame {

    public MyFrame() {
    super("title");
    JButton button = new JButton("click me");
    getContentPane().add(button);
    setSize(300, 400);
    setVisible(true);
    }

    }whereas I would do this:
    import javax.swing.JButton;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;

    // this uses composition - doesn't extend JFrame
    public class MyFrame {

    public MyFrame() {
    JFrame frame = new JFrame("title");
    JButton button = new JButton("click me");
    frame.getContentPane().add(button);
    frame.setSize(300, 400);
    frame.setVisible(true);
    }

    }both will result in the same UI component being constructed, but with version 2 you have much more control over what methods you are exposing

    this also removes your "I need access to the method" problem, because within the second MyClass, you can access whatever methods of JFrame you want, without exposing them to the outside world. simple
