Ok, so I've found that I can actually select Macros in Word 2007 and select Word commands. I can also run these commands using
    Application.Run MacroName:=FileNewDialog

But, there's also a command in File New that allows me to select My Templates, which opens a similar dialog, but only my own templates and not the default ones provided with Microsoft. I don't want those at all, makes the dialog view all cluttery. Does
anyone know the command to open this specific dialog box?

DB:3.88:Word 2007 Macro - Accessing My Templates Via Word Command? xm

    Hi Kenny
No, in that case there won't be a simple way to programmatically obtain what you want.
A possibility, if this is for your own private use, would be to try using SendKeys to emulate what you'd do with the keyboard as an end-user to get where you want to go. SendKeys isn't terribly reliable, but is usually good enough for a private tool.
I find I can press TAB a couple of times, then down-arrow a couple of times in the 2007 New dialog box, for example, to get to My templates.
The only other solution would be to create your own dialog box (user form) that lists the templates from the directory in question.Cindy Meister, VSTO/Word MVP

Unlike Windows the Mac OS does not permit file management operations from within your applications programs. Renaming, deleting, moving, copying files folders cannot be done in Open or Save As dialogs.

You've not indicated which version of OS X you're using but I'm guessing it's
10.7.x or later. Beginning with Lion Apple saw fit to denote the very folder you need to access -- your
User Library -- as Hidden. Getting into that folder is described

Once in the Library folder for your User Account navigate to:

When adding a new manual test to a test project, you have to use the Microsoft provided template, and create a new test in Word (or text). This is fine if you like the template........
I would like to do the following:
    1)  Create a number of test templates, according to types of manual test, and to our own standards. How can I do this?
Currently you have to create a new test script using the Microsoft template, then copy/paste from our existing word templates, overwriting the supplied one, each time you create a new manual test.
    2)  For existing manual scripts from legacy projects, I'd like to reuse them by bringing  them in to a new Team system project.  How can I do this, without the labourious work around in 1).
    Many thanks
    David

DB:3.72:Modifying Manual Test Word Template In Team Test Edition p9

The manual test file is stored in the project item template, which is in Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates\CSharp\1033\ManualTestWordFormat.zip.
Rather than changing this template, I think you're better off adding new manual test item templates for each word template you want. You can also add new manual test by adding new item templates. While I haven't tried this myself, it looks like this article has the steps you need: http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/06/01/CodeTemplates/.

I'm still a newbie... Is using the templates in Dreamweaver a bit (for lack of a bad word) "Lazy"? I have been coding my own layouts with CSS so far but was curious how good or bad making use of the pre-made DW templates are?

    DB:3.61:Using Templates In Dw? 8s

FYI: Questions specific to Dreamweaver should be posted in the DW Gen Discussion Forum.

    http://forums.adobe.com/community/dreamweaver/dreamweaver_general?view=discussions

To quickly answer here, DW Templates (.dwt files) are a proprietary site management tool exclusive to Dreamweaver. Don't confuse DW Templates with pre-built CSS Layouts or Starter Pages. There is nothing "lazy" about using DW Templates alone or with Starter Pages. They can be a huge time saver.

    Hi, Everyone,

As one consequence of a recent Trojan attack (now removed), Microsoft OfficeHome and Business2010can no longer find any of my custom templates in any Office program. I can find my custom templates using Windows Explorer, but when I use (for example)
"Create New Document or Template" in Word 2010, my personal templates do not show up at all. The same thing happens in PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote. In each of those "My Templates" is blank, but if I look (via Explorer)in the folder where my custom templates
have all been storedprior to the Trojan attack, allof mytemplates are present, and they all work correctly.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. How do I tellall of my MS-Officeprograms where my personal templates are located? The location for my personal templates (and it worked prior to this Trojan attack) is "C:\Users\Robert H. Woodman\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates".
Since this is a problem affecting all of my personal templates in all of my MS-Office 2010 programs, I am assuming there is a universal (if not necessarily easy) fix for it.

Beyond that, two things to try.

First create a brand new project with just one topic and see

I'm using Word 2011 on my MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.5, with no relevant recent changes made. I want to amend some templates but am unable to open the original .dotx files. If I try via Word, the User Templates\My Templates folder is empty. Trying via
Finder, the file location for Normal.dotm is \Users\username\Library\Application Support\Microsoft\Office\User Templates\My Templates; the file location for the remainder is a further sub-folder called My Templates (I recall encountering difficulties
when originally creating templates and, although it looks odd, I think I had no option than to create that sub-folder. However, I don't believe it is relevant to my problem.); in each case I am only able to open a new file based on the relevant template e.g.
Document1.doc and not the original template.

DB:3.37:How To Open A Template To Amend It In Word 2011 pc

I'm afraid I'm really not clear on what it is with which the problem lies :-) The leftmost column in my screen shot is nothing more than Finder's Sidebar. The content labeling may vary somewhat from one version of OS X to another, but this is an Apple
OS X mechanism - Microsoft has nothing to do with it.

What it contains is determined by the Sidebar Preferences as well as any custom items you choose to add. The Preferences need to be addressed in an actual Finder window, but items can be added to or removed from the list while in a program's Open or Save As
dialog... Just drag an item [i.e., Folder or document to the preferred position in the list]. You can also regulate what's displayed based on window height as well as the expander triangles to the left of the Category names. This is the same finder window
    with all categories collapsed:

However, the Sidebar is a secondary option. I get the impression that using OS X Finder features for navigating seem to be at the heart of your question. Selecting the preferred View of the hierarchy with the view buttons in the upper left of the window along
with the droppdown location list adjacent to them are the primary means of getting from one spot to another.

What Phillip pointed you to is entirely different. Although remotely related to the issue at hand, interjecting that info here does nothing but confuse things.

The File Locations Preferences allow for personalizing File Locations used by Word if you have reason to change them from the defaults -- Which most users typically never need do. In the case of User Templates it only points Finder to that location when you
Save/Save As a document select some form of Template as the file type. It has nothing to do with "automatic navigation" when
    opening files, though.

Is it possible to access and use Microsoft Word templates (for example, for a greetings card) with Word web app? If so, how?

DB:3.33:Using Online Templates With Word Web App xs

    Hi Pernimius,
The Word Web App does not, itself, offer access to templates. You can probablydownload and use templates from Microsoft Office online. However the Word Web App editor does not support
    dotx files.
Your best option might be to use a docx file as your greeting card "template", and make a copy of it every time you need to make a new instance of the greeting card..

Given your solution and the error message you got before, it sounds as though retire.exe is looking for opening.scx when it starts and assuming it'll be in whatever the current default drive\path is. And complaining when it's not.

    I recently upgraded to Office 2013 from Office 2010: a lot of my former settings automatically transferred over, such as my Quick-Access Toolbar, but not my templates and building blocks. These used to be stored in User/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Templates;
where are they stored now? How do I import them?

DB:3.29:How Do I Import My Office 2010 Templates ax

As Suzanne pointed out, you have successfully modified the location where Word looks for your templates. In Word 2013 I believe this also changes the default location where Word stores your new templates (like Word 2003) but unlike Word 2007 and 2010.
(I am writing this without access to Word 2013 on this machine, sorry.)

Unfortunately, you have to jump through several hoops to get to that location in the default setup for Word 2013. I have added the command to the QAT. In addition, I've switched the Ctrl+N keyboard shortcut to that command. That gets you a traditional (Word
97 actually) dialog to create a new document based on your templates. Now, the only way I get to see the mess that Microsoft presents for new users is if I go to File New. (I admit that mess may have uses, I just haven't found them yet.)

It is actually a combination of the user templates folder and the workgroup templates folder if you are interested in having two folders. Both show up on the tabbed dialog.

    See
Workgroup Templates if you are interested.

    Hello,
I am using Microsoft Office 2010 with Windows 7 Ultimate. When I open Word and click FileOpen an Open dialog appears with a navigation pane shown on the left had side. The first entry in this pane is Microsoft Word. If I expand that
entry it contains a single folder name Templates. This folder points to my custom defined Word templates folder and contains all of my templates.
Opening the other Office applications in the suite, I notice that in each one the first entry in the Open dialog navigation pane is a target named for the application (e.g., in Access there is a target named Microsoft Access, in PowerPoint there is a target
named Microsoft PowerPoint, etc.). All of these other targets are empty. They contain no folders and for all I can tell they are perfectly useless.
It seems that the intent of these targets would be for a quick way to access application specific folders quickly. That is certainly the case for the Microsoft WordTemplates folder. It would be great if I could add my Startup
folder, main documents folders, and a couple frequently used folders to this application specific folder. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a way to do it.
    Questions:
    1. What is the purpose of these targets?
    2. Can the contents of these targets be modified? Is there some way to add my Startup folder below the Templates folder? I already know that the Templates folder in the Microsoft Word application target can not be renamed or deleted
(because it is in use), but I can add other folders to the Template folder.
    Thanks.

DB:3.24:Change The File Location For User Templates In Word 2007 s7

You can setup the User Templates folder in exactly the same way, from Word Options Advanced File Locations. While in the options also set the option to prompt to save the normal template (and ideally also set the create backup option).

Close Word and answer NO at the prompt to save the normal template. Put your Word 2003 normal.dot template in the folder you have designated and restart Word. It will build a normal.dotm template from the settings of normal.dot. Close Word and this time answer
YES to the prompt. Remove normal.dot from the folder to a safe backup location before restarting Word.

The rest of your templates should work much as before and if they do so I would leave them alone.

I'm using Office XP on Windows XP. I was e-mailed a Word template to add to my existing templates. As instructed, I pasted the template in the Templates subfolder of my Office folder, but it did not appear when I selected File-New.

I did manage to add the template by opening an accompanying document that uses that template, deleting all the text, and saving THAT file as a template. Perhaps that will work, but I find it frustrating that I can't simply add the template as instructed.

What really bothers me about all this is that during the process, and after reading Help, I openedTools-Options-File-Location tab. When I double-click User Templates it appears thatmy templates are being savedin the folderMy Name-Application Data-Microsoft-Templates.

But I DON'T HAVE this folder on my hard drive. The only subfolder I have in this Microsoft folderappears to beInternet Explorer. How can this possibly be?

And when I go to search for the template I created on all of my C drive, Windows can't find it. So while it's right there in my File-New-Templates dialog, it isn't on my hard drive.

I am the sole user of my machine and I'm also the Administrator. Is this where the problem is?

If you just want to print a page of identical labels, click the New Document button in the Labels dialog. You'll get a one-page document that looks like this:

If you don't see the dotted lines around the table cells, click the View Gridlines button at the left end of the Table Tools | Layout tab.

Click in the top left cell. Use the Insert Pictures tool to insert the graphic. Right-click the graphic and set its Wrap to Square, and drag it to the right size and position. Click to the right of the graphic and enter the text for the label.

Position the pointer so it becomes a black arrow pointing northeast, and click to select the whole cell. Then copy to the clipboard.

Now position the pointer above the top of the column so it becomes a black arrow pointing down, and click to select the whole column.

Paste from the clipboard. The contents of the first cell will be repeated in each cell of the column. Then select the middle column and paste; and select the rightmost column and paste. (You don't want to put anything in the narrow columns, which represent
    the spaces between the labels.)

When you have a full set of labels, you can just print, or save the document first so you can reprint it at will.

DB:3.18:Word 2010 Asks To Save Normal.Dotm While Closing Word When Using Group Templates 31

    Hello Thomas,
It seems to me that Word is looking at the Workgroup templates normal files due to a lack of a required file locally. Even though you put it locally, Word has been using the one over the workgroup templates and will not change until you remove those
normal files from that drive and force Word and Outlook to look locally first.
That said, I would suggest moving the normal and normalemail dotm files to a different directory than what is listed for the workgroup templates. Depending on your needs, I would remove normal files locally and let it build it's own (located where
NeverQuiteSuire listed - C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates). When you open Word and close it, it should build a new normal in that location (assuming the normal and normalemail is gone from the workgroup templates path).
    I hope this helps.

"The one shortcoming of this is that, once created, the Word document that I create loses the reference back to the template file"- That is to be expected, since your template is stored in Documentum (application vs filesystem). If you want to maintain references to your template, you should keep the templates on the filesystem like you suggested. The alternative, is to customize the client application to maintain the relationships from within docbase.

I have Word 2013 running on Windows 7 Pro at work. I have a set of template folders that I use for the templates that come up with the "New Document or Template" button (the old FileNewDialog button). With each successive release of Word, it has been more
and more difficult to remove the templates that come with Word (letter/resume/etc). I love working with the NDorT format rather than the newer setup, but the tabs are so crowded when I have both my template folders and the ones that come with Word. I remember
when you could just uncheck a box to get rid of these templates, but the last update (2010) required a registry edit that worked great on my home PC. Now I can't find anything that tells you how to get rid of these things. Why has Microsoft made it so difficult
to delete these templates? The documents look so generic anyway, I can't imagine many professionals using them.

I don't care for the use of Courier New or fixed spacing fonts. Courts in some jurisdictions may require them. This is what is used in all of the pleading templates shown in the Office site.
    Here is a
sample of my pleadings. Mono-spaced fonts are harder to read. Few law firms in Wisconsin use them.

The sample is a discovery demand that uses columns for most of the information. This is not standard in pleadings. However, it is easier to read and shortens the document length. I try to have my writings read by the courts, anything I can do to make it easier

Given the complexity of the templates, using another TOC slot or style is not an option (unless Microsoft will increase the number available above 9). Can this issue be addressed in an update? (while, I'm at it, it would be nice if there were a

    Hello,
I have posted this question in several other MS forums and someone made the following suggestion: Possibly, this is supported from a network administrative level. If it is, the information would be in the Office Resource Kit. You could try asking
in the IT Pro forum for Word in the TechNet forum branch.
I couldn't find a that forum so I thought I would try again here:
I am using Microsoft Office 2010 with Windows 7 Ultimate. When I open Word and click FileOpen an Open dialog appears with a navigation pane shown on the left had side. The first entry in this pane is Microsoft Word. If I expand that
entry it contains a single folder name Templates. This folder points to my custom defined Word templates folder and contains all of my templates. It is a great feature as it appears to be application specific and makes my templates immediately
available without having to drill down through other folders or even look for a Word templates folder in an ever expanding Favorites list.
It seems that the intent of these targets would be for a quick way to access any application specific folders I chose (e.g., Word Templates, Startup, Documents, etc.). That is certainly the case for the Microsoft WordTemplates folder
and it would be great if I could add my Startup folder, main documents folders, and a couple frequently used folders to this application specific folder. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a way to do it.
    Questions:
    1. What is the purpose of these targets?
    2. Can the contents of these targets be modified? Is there some way to add my Startup folder below the Templates folder? Note: I already know that the Templates folder in the Microsoft Word application target can not be renamed
or deleted (because it is in use), but I can add other folders to the Template folder.
    Thanks.

DB:3.14:Word Addin Does Not Work Unless I Delete Normal.Dot Every Time Before Opening Word fx

I've remarked my previous message as an answer since it did solve the original question. When you have follow-up questions that are actually a different problem to the original question it's better to start a new message with a link to any discussions that may pertain to the problem. People use the information in previous discussions as a resource, so threads with mixed topics can be confusing, especially when something that answered the original question isn't marked as the answer. In your case, I really urge you to take the question to the newsgroup appropriate for the type of add-in you have. As the problem is with a single user, the origin is probably, as you surmise, something on that user's machine interacting with your add-in. Since this is not a VSTO add-in, there's little we can do to assist.all I can do is tell you how one usually goes about trouble-shooting this kind of thing: have the user disable ALL add-ins (except yours). Then re-enable them, one-by-one, until you locate the one causing the problem. Then that user (or his IT department) has to decide how to deal with the conflict (which tool has the lower priority and should not be loaded by default).FWIW, if Adobe PDF products are involved, there's a good chance that's where you'll find the culprit. They have a known history of interfering with Normal.dot and other add-ins to such an extent that they've had to be removed from the machine. In this kind of case (whether it's Adobe or not), there's not a thing your code can do about it, short of making sure you don't use Normal.dot. If you need to provide toolbars or something like that, distribute your own template with your add-in, set that as the CustomizationContext, and avoid touching Normal.dot like the plague (which is, in any case best practice for the professional developer).Cindy Meister, VSTO/Word MVP

That template uses one of the little-known capabilities of a content control. If you click in the main body, go to the Developer tab of the ribbon, and click the Properties button, you'll see that the box is checked for "Remove content control when contents
    are edited".

As soon as you type the first character while the cursor is in the main body, all of the sample text -- and the content control itself -- will disappear. You're then free to enter whatever you want, and the only function of the template is to supply the cover

If you do a full uninstall of the previous Office before installing 2010, you can first save the old templates and then copy them into the Templates folder afterward. If you do an upgrade installation, the old templates will not be removed and will still
    be there.
Word 2010 can base new documents on old (*.dot) templates, but the resulting documents will be in Compatibility Mode. If you want to use the features that have been added in Word 2007 and 2010, you can use the Convert button on the File menu -- either convert
individual documents as you want to; or open the old template, convert it, and save it as a *.dotx template in the same folder (or *.dotm if it contains macros).

Also I just worked out that if you open a file from a personal template, you can click File New again and pin that to Featured, when it will appear near the top of the list. But I will keep your Poremsky option in mind.

DB:3.11:Links Missing From Printed Version 83

Using RH7 on a help text originally created in RH5, my
printed documentation has no links at all-- not even non-working
links. The link text comes through as plain text. While the printed
documentation is being generated I repeatedly get a message from
Microsoft Word, saying "Word cannot save this file because it is
already opened elsewhere (C:Documents and Settings\...\Normal.dot)"
This message makes me think the link problem is related to
templates. When I open the resulting document and look under Tools
Templates and Add-ins, it shows these templates:

    - In the "Document Template" box, C:\Documents and
    Settings\ccbrewst\My Documents\I-GUIDES help\IGUIDES_RHT.dot

    - In the "Checked items" box, rhd.dot and SnagIt Add-in.dot

It doesn't mention Normal.dot. Can anyone tell me if the link
problem is related to templates, and why I get the message about
Normal.dot? (I think I'm over my head!) Thanks.

DB:3.11:Links Missing From Printed Version 83

Your link question and answer could be useful to someone
else, a post with that edited out is not. However, you should see
an Edit link in your own posts.

Look in your Word settings. There is a setting to force Word
to prompt for changes to Normal. Try turning it off.

    DB:3.11:Thread: Using Word-Templates When Editing E-Mails 8d

    Hi,

Has anyone succeeded in using saved word-templates when writing e-mails with word in GW8? I have set Word as the default editor. (I have the 2007version )

I do not seem to have all the editing-options available, for example the Windows-button, which I need to be able to open saved templates.

    Any ideas?

    /Jessica

DB:3.11:Templates Not Available Word Or Excel In Os X 10.7 With Odd Work-Around af

Something odd has recently happened with My Templates since I upgraded to OS X 10.7. My templates are no longer available to me within Word or Excel when I choose File...New from Template...My Templates. I know how to see the templates in the finder, and
they are all there, but they do not show up when I try to choose one from within Word. They are a mix of old and new templates, some are .dotx files, some are Microsoft Word 97-2004 templates.

DB:3.11:Templates Not Available Word Or Excel In Os X 10.7 With Odd Work-Around af

Good work! I believe the reason it didn't work the first time may be that an Office app was running at the time. If so, the .plist is simply rewritten from what already has been read into RAM rather than generating a new file.

    Thanks for posting your solution.

DB:3.10:Deploying Word Templates Using Gpo x3

I have 3 word templates that i'd like to push to all my Word 2003 users on an Active Directory domain (Windows 2008 Server). What i envisage doing is putting the 3 files on a file share and changing the User Templates field in Word / Tools / Options / File Locations to point to the file share the contains the 3 templates. Anyone know how i would deploy a GPO to change the User Templates field in Word 2003 ?thanks in advance.paddy ryan

DB:3.10:Deploying Word Templates Using Gpo x3

From what I understand, it's stored under %systemroot%\CSC (which on a typical installation would translate to C:\Windows\CSC).EDITED: Just to include a tad more information, you won't be able to browse the content under this folder, so far as I can tell. But that is the storage location.Cheers,Lain

    DB:3.10:Using Avery Labels xj

I used Microsoft Word to print Avery template labels (address and file folder labels). The label maker in Word makes that very easy. How can I do that easily using Pages? what is the chance that a Pages update can include Avery templates just as Word does? Am I overlooking something here?

    DB:3.10:Using Avery Labels xj

One side note: You will need to download Avery templates from their website. I think word does the spacing and all for you. no avery templates to speak of.

    Look Here Under word templates.

    Hope this helps,
    Jason

    Hi,

DB:3.09:Microsoft Word Documents Keep Losing Formatting From Templates a9

When the formatting of your heading changes, if you select the text and press
Ctrl+Spacebar, is it restored? Is it possible that the font is damaged--possible the bold variant of Calibri is missing?

    DB:3.09:Templates And Add-Ins In Word 2010 c3

    Hi,
I am currently using Microsoft Office 2010 32 bit on a Windows 7 professional 64 bit machine. We are still in the deployment phase and I am testing our existing files like macros and templates in Office 2010. Currently Microsoft Word 2003 is being used and
a template was created ages ago that appears like a menu next to Help and have options to send a fax, memo, add a signature that were created in VBA.
I have added the template file located under C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Templates\ in Microsoft Word 2010 by going to File -- Options -- Add-ins -- Selected Templates next to Manage on the right hand side -- Go.
The menu item does not appear on Word every time I open the application. How I do get it to work?
    Please help!
    Thanks.

    DB:3.09:Templates And Add-Ins In Word 2010 c3

    Hello,

Even though this is old and there are no responses. I've had to right click the application inside of the installation folder for Office 2010 and run it as an administrator, this was the only way I could get Add-Ins to actually stick in our similar domain
    environment.
