    Hello,

I am using vmware server to testing and development. This means that guest machine runs Windows 2003 with Active Directory, SQL Server 2005, SharePoint 2003/2007 and Visual Studio 2003/2005. All this requires a lot of computing power and memory. Sometimes I have to host up to 3 machines.

Recently I received a good offer on IBM Netfinity 5500 M20 (4xPIII 500MHz Xeon, 2048 RAM DIMM ECC and 3x36GB SCSI). It could be upgraded to 4xPIII 1GHz and 32GB of Ram.

I have an idea of using this server along with some linux distro to build a new host for my development. Now my questions.

    1. Does VMware Server software can utilize 4 processors or more?

    2. Which linux distro is best for 4 or more processors? I am considering only full distros like slackware or RedHat.

    3. Maybe it is better to use more expensive solution like 2xPIV 2,2GHz Xeons on other server platform?

Thanks in advance for all help on this.

I'm setting up a server (HP Proliant ML150G6) running Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64. I have 4, 2TB drives configured as a RAID 10. In the RAID setup the logical drive shows up as 3.67TB but Server 2003 will only recognize 1.99 TB of storage. I've looked
into using GPT but that will only work with unpartitioned disk space. Is there another way to get Server 2003 to see an array larger than 2TB?

    DB:3.31:Raid 1+0 Larger Than 2tb mf

I apologize if this is a double post. But I am having similar issues. I am aware of the 2 TB issue and did use GPT. But this is my situation:

Here is the setup I have. Dell Poweredge 2900 with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprises with a Perc 5/i controller. I have read through the forums and not found one that answers my question. For my OS I have VD 0(? The first VD)with 2 x 73 GB SAS drives
in RAID 1 with a 3rd 73 GB SAS drive as a hot swap. I have 4 x 2 TB SATA drives in RAID 10 or 10with a 5th2 TB SATA drive as a hot swap. Once I initialize in the controller setup it becomes Disk 2, VD 1 (or close to- I am not at the server at
    the moment).
After reboot I go to computer management and it immediately asks me to initialize the disk. Of course the two options are MBR and GPT. The first time I chose GPT and it gave me just shy of 4 TB of usable space. The problem I am running into is I have another
1.5 TB data drive that I am trying to migrate/copy to the new GPT partition of 3.76 TB. When I do the standard copy and paste feature it only copies over 128 GB. Also when I try to use Acronis Migrate Easy it wants to delete the partitions and then only allots
for the 1.357 TB from old drive with 662 GB of unallocated space after. Essentially only using 2 TB of Free drive space.
I did notice when I selected the option to use MBR it gave two partitions: 2 TB and 1.76 TB, thus equaling roughly the overall availability. Of course those numbers preceeding are rough estimates.
Am I doing something wrong with the GPT or should I be using the 2 partition with MBR.

Another option would be a cluster. You would however need a shared storage solution like a SAN or SCSI/SAS solution. Some examples would be the MD3000, PV220S, Dell|EMC AX or CX3-series.

About a year ago I have installed Windows 2003 server on a single hard drive. Until recently I have added another new harddrive and wish to configure as RAID 1. Therefore, I modify the BIOS setting's SATA setting as fromNONE RAID to Enable RAID configuration.
After I create, rebuild the RAID 1 array in the CERC2 option ROM, the Windows 2003 is unable to boot, merely shows the Windows 2003 splash screen for a while and then reboot. This process happens again and again. There is not way for me to boot the system successfully.

I believe there is no RAID driver is installed to the existing Windows 2003. In fact, there is no way for me to install the RAID driver in the OS prior adding the second harddrive (RAID is not enable in BIOS. The OS cannot detect the RAID controller) . I wonder how Ican install the RAID driver to the existing Windows 2003 server? I am unable to to boot the OS while RAID setting is enable in BIOS.

I do not wish to reinstall the Windows 2003 from scratch as that is the production server.

    Please advice. Thank you.

If you have a dual channel RAID controller I would suggest a 2 drive RAID1 for the host on one channel and a 4 drive RAID10 for the VM's on the other channel.

That way you isolate your host OS from interfering with the VM's as much as possible.

Dell makes a tool that allows for installing Windows with Additional Drivers that are pulled from a USB Key.

    Here is the utility: www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

You install the utility, download the RAID (or whatever) drivers that you need for the Windows install, extract the drivers to C:\Program Files\Dell\USBKeyPrepF6\Files, run the utility (which is just a couple clicks).

As a note, make sure you clear out the text DELLFLASH when running the tool. Otherwise it doesnt seem to work.

As a second note, the utility blows away your flash USB Key contents and partitions the flash drive in a strange way. I have found that you can recover your USB Key via Disk Management in Windows. There might be a more glamorous way too.

Is better to use RAID (I think 10 type) or not use RAID level.

The raid level 10 is the best?

    2.

Is better to use the growable disk or fixed disk?

How much is more fast the fixed disk?

    Thanks

    Luca P.

    DB:2.53:Raid Or Not Raid ad

Raid 5 has more storage processor overhead because it must calculate and write parity information on the fly. This slows write performance compared with a Raid 10 array. It is popular because there is minimum overhead on the disk array for fault tolerance (you burn one disk in the array).

Raid 10 has less storage processor overhead because it doesn't have to calculate data.. Simply breaks it up and writes it to the disk arry. It also can be faster on read than 5 because there are two copies of data stored on the disks, so you can do concurrent reads, which can speed things up a bit. Con here is that it eats a lot of disk space (50% 0verhead).

Lots of factors at play here, however.. $$, # of spindles, quality and featureset of array controller, availability of write caching, disk load, etc. are all going to impact. Probably not as simple as which one is better. We use both in our org depending on these factors.

bottom line, if you can afford it, go 10, if not, go 5. With a given number of disks, 10 will outrun 5 most of the time, but burn more space. I would recommend some level of fault tolerance however in a VMWare box, especially if you start stacking disks. Probability of failure of the disk set goes up with each spindle you put in there. And you got more eggs in the basket running multipe vm's.

    Hope this helps, Chuck

PERC firmware is up-to-date (just had to replace a hard dreive and rebuild my RAID 5 array, so everything is up-to-date as of last night).  I've got 3 73 GB, 15,000 rpm hard drives installed in a RAID 5 array.  I've got 3 more identical drives ready to install and want to put two in a RAID 1 with my operating system and applications on it and 4 in a RAID 10 for my data.

DB:2.48:Steps To Switch From Raid 5 To Raid 1 And Raid 10 kf

For number 3, I hope you're not talking about dynamic disk mirroring. There's no way back from dynamic disk without deleting all partitions. Software raid (capability of dynamic disk) on top of hardware raid is not a good practice.

I would suggest getting something like Acronis' Disk Director or True Image and copy the partition to an external (e.g. USB) harddrive (after tape backups for assurance). Then completely destroy the raid config and recreate this to your liking. Make sure the raid 1 is created first and that it's selected as the boot container. Now boot to the Acronis rescue CD and copy the partition back from the external harddrive to the raid 1. After this you boot to the OS. If it's working as intended, create a partition on the raid 10 and restore that data (19GB) from tape or wherever you had it backed up.

Ok we had this problem on our office and we really need some help very badly... We have this SAP

Development Server 4.6c which was installed on Windows Server 2003 via IBM Netfinity (raid). Our

Windows Server 2003 has been corrupted and sometimes goes out in blue screen on display (BSOD).

    Our main concern now is:

    1. How can we backup/recover our files since we don't have a backup?

    2. Where does the database of SAP were located?

    3. If we'll gonna re-install the Windows Server 2003 via repair option, will it affect the database on our SAP

    Dev?

    Thanks

DB:2.47:Windows Server 2003 Crashed! How Can We Recover/Backup Our Database File? af

If you don't have a backup, then you can't recover, right?

The only data that we have is the database which was stored on the hardrive. That is the thing that I am asking on how can we backup it

We don't know your database (Oracle? DB2? SQL-Server? MaxDB?) and we don't have the magic ball to see your setup before the machine crashed...

    We're using SQL-Server

the database files would not be corrupted and that it will be possible to repair the OS

    Could anyone please confirm this?

    Thanks

Saludos.

I am able to boot from the 2008.06 ISO that I created. Arch gets as far as enumerating the USB devices and then goes into a kernel panic where it states that it cant mount the cdrom. At this moment the installation is dead.

What I find strange is, how can Arch not boot the cdrom when I am already in the installation process which started by initially reading the cdrom?

I am able to boot an older version of Fedora on the same hardware, which tells me that the hardware is ok.

Does anyone have an idea how to resolve this problem?

    Hi,

I am experiencing a problem with VM's freezing after exactly 1 hour.

The screen blanks, vm's network interface goes down and it responds to no input.

The problem is evident running in either vmware player or workstation. The host machine and the vmware software continue running normally.

Attempting to restart the VM fails, the vmware window goes black but the vmware bios/post screen does not come up.

Nothing shows up in the event logs, the vmware log file shows nothing obviously out of the ordinary as far as I can tell.

I have a feeling that this is an issue with my hardware. It is running windows 2003 std on an IBM netfinity 5100 (single CPU, hardware/scsi raid 1). I have reinstalled windows server which has not resolved the problem.

The problem presents itself exactly 1 hour after the host OS boots up, ie if I booted the VM machine 55 minutes after host startup it would fail 5 minutes later.

I have trawled through power management settings and the bios looking for anything obvious but have had no luck. If anyone else can offer any other possibilities that would be great.

    Thanks!

Have you tried with the screensaver disabled on the host?

Because of the exact time it takes to hang, I believe this maybe the same time the host screensaver kicks-in hanging the system.

alex\'s suggestions are what i would have said if i read your message

first. i would definately check the BIOS to see if you can boot from

the array - both th PC\'s bios and the array\'s BIOS/config.

what DOS is the C: partition? Re-SYS the partition with that specific

OS\'s SYS utility. That should make it bootable and mark it active

    explicitly.

I'm trying to use P2V 2.0.3 to clone an NT Server system off of an old IBM Netfinity 5000 system. The server has a 9GB RAID 1 array with 3 partitions; a 50MB service partition that I won't copy, the Windows C: drive, and the Windows E: drive. It also has a 35GB RAID 5 array with a single Windows logical drive on it.

I can boot fine off the P2V Boot CD. When I start the Assistant, it connects to the server and detects both arrays and all the partitions on them. I tell it to clone the two Windows partitions on the first array, but it can't detect that Windows is installed. That doesn't so much bother me. The real problem is that when the clone operation starts it ends immediately. No errors, and the .vmdk file is partitioned, but no data is transferred.

I'm clueless at this point. Things seem to be working correctly but nothing happens. Any ideas on where to tweak?

DB:2.44:P2v Clone Of Nt Server Ends Too Soon ca

What a struggle! I ended up using Ghost to clone this system. P2V just wouldn't work. I don't know what the issue was; there was a hardware support partition on the system but deleting it didn't help. Could be a combination of really old hardware and really old drivers on a really old OS (WinNT).

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

    HI enwe,

Hi everybody !!! I have a problem with database SQL server 2000, and I need anyone help me.
I have PC machine with hardware configuration following:
    + RAM : 512M
    + CPU : 2.4 GHz (intel Pentium 4)
+ System : Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprice Edition , Service Pack 1
    (this is call Machine1 )
and other Server machine with hardware configuration the following :
    + RAM : 2G
    + CPU : 3.6 GHz( intel Xeon)
    +System : Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprice Edition , Service Pack 2
    (use RAID 5)
    (this is call Machine2 )
.And SQL Server 2000 is installed in these machine.
I created one table and one script to insert several records into this table. and script for inserting:
    declare @count int , @max int
    set @count =1
    set @max = 5000
    WHILE (@count @max or @count = @max)
    BEGIN
    insert into TBAT_STOCKEOD(TRDT,SEQNO,COMPID,TRANSTYPE) values('20071219',cast(@count as varchar(5)),'13215','1')
    set @count = @count +1
    END
    I execute this script on Machine1 and Machine2 :
    + Machine1 : spent 3 seconds.
    + Machine2 : spent 30 seconds. I don't understand why Machine2 is slower than Machine1 ( while configuration of Machine2 is better than Machine1's ). I don't know what happen.
I checked resource usages in perfmon when SQL server execute script and result following :
    Machine1:
    Proccessor used 100%
    whereas,Machine2 used physical Disk 100%
Is there the way to configurate SQL server to improve speed writting of hard disk?

There are no problems with the Windows Server 2003, CentOS 5.2 or Fedora Core 5 releases at all - totally stable.

However, on the CentOS 4.7 release I keep getting these errors:

bq. mptscsi: ioc0: attempting task abort! These keep popping up - I can't seem to see any correlation between disk I/O load and the messages. After some time - usually about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks - the guest will lock up to the point of having to hit the reboot button. There hasn't (knock on wood!) been any errors that fsck hasnt' been able to correct.

I don't want to upgrade the CentOS 4.7 to 5.x because this is an appliance (no upgrade yet!) that has been hardened and tuned for its function.

I see messages without solutions on this issue in the community around this issue and there seems to be reference to a "read-only bug" and/or the 1000 MHz versus 100 MHz kernel timing. I don't think that this is my case but others may have another opinion.

Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Thanks!

DB:2.41:Centos 4.7 Guest - Mptscsi: Ioc0: Attempting Task Abort! kp

    What do you waiting ?

This workaround does not make disappear "attempting task abort" messages, but it can avoid becoming root filesystem read-only, due timeout and errors on virtual scsi controller . That is really bad error. Messages is not a terrible.

    Bom dia.

You are probably using the INSTALL CD that comes with Solaris x86.
Don't use it but use the Software CD 1/1 to boot and install the system instead. The INSTALL CD is supposed to be used on a completely blank system (no other OS's) although even there I think Software CD 1/1 does the job.

Also, if you are new to Solaris I advice you to get the FAQ (you can find it on e.g. http://www.science.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2- it should be really helpfull during the first few weeks/months on Solaris

Se for pelo windows você não conseguirá fazer o raid na unidade onde o sistema (windows) esta instalado, apenas nas outras.

Your raid is hardware based (the PERC card (or integrated version on the motherboard)). It is not affected by the choice of the OS.

In other words, besides needing to have the drivers available for the install, you don't need anything special to install Windows on the raid container.

    2. Place all VMs on the RAID 5s. In my opinion, the system volume (C:) of your host is dedicated to the host system. You'll run into less issues in the future by going this route. You don't run the risk of filling the volume and having the host AND your
VMs stop functioning, and if the volume every fails, you still have your VMs on the RAID 5s. It's just a reinstall of the host system from there.
    3. I recommend fixed to dynamic primarily because most people don't monitor their disk space very well. While there are some benefits to going dynamic, you have the be VERY careful you don't over-commit storage, otherwise your going to run into
    issues.
Going with fixed disks removes this issue by allocated the entire amount up front. It won't let you over-commit if you go with fixed disk.

The drivers are still there. Accept the RAID configuration from the drives, where its stored. Your array should be recognized and should boot to your OS.

    DB:2.38:Raid 5 Versus Raid 1+0 d8

I would like to know which implementation of Raid would most effective for my exchange server 2003 platform, which I intend deploying on a Proliant DL380 with two 300GB U320 and two 18.2GB Ultra 3 SCSI Drives (All Hot Swappable). Performance and space are of the utmost importance here while not compromising fault tolerance as well.

    Raid 5 or Raid 1+0 ???

    DB:2.38:Raid 5 Versus Raid 1+0 d8

Looks like you only have enough disks to do raid 1 on the 18.2gb drives for the OS and then raid 1 on the 300GB drives. I'd definitely pick up another 300gb drive if it'll fit to do raid 5 for storage groups and logs.

    16 GB of RAM
Raid 1 for OS and DB logs
Raid 1 for SCCM and SQL installations
Raid 1 for installation files, packages, data storage, and site backup files
Does this look like an ideal setup for 5000 clients? Do you recommend creating sepate partitions onRaidsfor OS, DB, SCCM, and SQL installations?

Hi I hope someone can answer this pretty easily.I have a server running exchange 5.5, we are in the midle of upgrading to 2003, the server has been set up with RAID 5, one of the raid 5 drives failed (drive 0:0) the drive was pulled out the server was re-booted. What impact would this have on the other raid drives the server? Many thanks.

    DB:2.38:Raid 5 Configuration Question jd

This will not result in any changed behavior to the situation as described above. The RAID Controller has already discarded the failed drive and will not use it anymore.Depending on the configuration of your RAID controller and your backplane, your RAID controller may be able to begin rebuilding your RAID Configuration to its former configuration and speed when you connect a new drive in the position of drive 0:0.

Dell T320s run windows 2003 great but I had to add in a network card and change the Raid controller to a Perc6 from other Dells i had laying around but you really should choose a different model if you intend on running 2003. so all in all it was a box already purchased and I had to get it to work and if i did it all over again id load ESXI on it and run the 2003 Server as a VM.
