    DB:5.34:Openlayers Api On Bing Map Base Tile zj

    How to add openlayers API onto a bing map and what is the main use and advantage of such an implementation ?

    Urgent please let me know.

    Thanks.

    DB:5.34:Openlayers Api On Bing Map Base Tile zj

    I would add that using OpenLayers with Bing Maps adds the ability to mix data sources more readily. However, the developer would be better off just sticking with Bing Maps if the required data sources are supported by the Bing Maps API. I like OpenLayers,
    but Bing Maps is better integrated and produces a better/smoother experience for the end user.

    (OpenLayers also supports exotic projections, but I suspect this only works with rasters if the tile server supports the projection you want to use)Richard Marsden

    DB:3.66:Tile Alignment Issue In Internet Explorer 10 When Using Certain Base Maps 3x

    I've recently noticed that one of my client's projects built with OpenLayers is experiencing issues with its Bing base map in IE10 RTM on Windows 8 RTM. After manipulating the map (panning, zooming) a few times, the base map tiles would suddenly become jumbled
    or misaligned. It seems that each row of tiles was from a different geographic location. Once this occurred, it would persist through all zoom levels and across all base map types (i.e., Road, Hybrid, Aerial).
    Upon further testing, I was able to reproduce the issue on the OpenLayers examples. Take, for instance, this example:
    http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/spherical-mercator.html
    If you select any of the Bing base layers, or the OpenStreetMap base layer, and then zoom in and out a few times, eventually you should see the tiles become jumbled. I found that it is easiest to reproduce if you zoom with your mouse wheel fairly quickly
    (perhaps three stops per second). I was also able to reproduce the bug using the OpenLayers ArcGIS Server 9.3 Rest API Example athttp://openlayers.org/dev/examples/arcgis93rest.html.
    Interestingly, none of the Google base maps exhibit this problem in OpenLayers.
    I was unable to reproduce the issue in Firefox or Chrome on the same Windows 8 system. More to the point, if I use IE10's Developer Tools (F12) to switch the browser into IE9 Standards Mode, I am unable to reproduce the problem either. Thus it seems to be
    related to the IE10 specific rendering mode.
    The issue was observed on Windows 8 Enterprise x64 RTM, using Internet Explorer 10 RTM (specifically, version 10.0.9200.16384 with RTM update version). I work for a Microsoft partner so we have begun to deploy a few Windows 8 machines. Although it would
    be foolish to report issues observed while using a beta browser version, my understanding is that the RTM version of IE and Windows 8 will be the same released to the public next month, thus the final release.
    This is my first issue submission, so please advise if I need to make any corrections!

    Hi Mayank,
    The report processor downloads the tiles from Bing Maps Web Services for the map area. Currently, Reporting Services only supports the following tile types:
    •Road. Display a road map style with white background.
    •Aerial. Display an aerial view only. No text is displayed in this mode.

    I use ASP.NET and OpenLayers (JavaScript-based map component) with IE7 to draw maps and routes on maps. When drawing the vector-based routes (VML on IE7) the browser crasches regularly when the route is long. Usually not on load, but when zooming a couple of times, i.e. when the routes has to be redrawn with VML a couple of times. The module that seems to be the problem is VGX.DLL. It seems to be the DLL that handles VML. I know that OpenLayers is a non-Microsoft product, but since it based purely on JavaScript, I think that it should not be able make the browser crash. Does anyone know if there is a fix or workaround for VGX.DLL (version 7.0xxx)? Thanks /Tommy Update: Error report:

    Hi Tommy,It's hard for me to make a truly educated guess, since I have no personal experience with OpenLayers or how they might interpret the code in your tutorial sample.  In reading the sample, though, I see that you're using some pretty large scales.  It's entirely possible you're overflowing some of the limits specified in the Basic VML Types article on MSDN.I would be inclined to believe the feedback you received in the other thread.  One thought might be to reduce the scale at higher resolutions and to offer more precision at lower resolutions.  You're more familiar with the problem than I am, of course, so that may or may not be possible.  Another approach might be to display the map in sections.  That would lead to more mouse clicks, but if it allows you to accomplish your goal, it might be worth considering.  Hope this helps...-- LanceLance Leonard, Programming Writer, Internet Explorer Developer Content

    DB:2.93:The Ecomap Costa Rica Project Goes Live! kc

    Parts of the site have been up for a few weeks now, but the bit that is relevant for this forum is that the online maps are available with Virtual Earth base maps. http://www.ecomapcostarica.com The project is a collaboration between the University of Dallas, Winwaed Software Technology LLC, and Leaves Lizards. We shall be mapping the Leaves Lizards rainforest restoration project. The project is only a year old, so we shall be getting baseline data and intend to return each year to see the changes. Field work will be performed by the Field Ecology class (who had their first class today). We fly out on Sunday. Field work is projected to start on Tuesday for a week. We shall be having the students blog their experiences whilst we are out there (yes wifi in the rain forest!). We are also hoping to have live updates of both the maps and new panoramic photos. The maps are implemented using MapServer and OpenLayers. The Virtual Earth version of the map is at: http://www.ecomapcostarica.com/map/index_ve.shtml (Internet Explorer recommended for the VE version) This uses Virtual Earth for the base map. This gives very good coverage of wider Costa Rica and Central America. We also have a version which uses a simple outline map instead of Virtual Earth, here: http://www.ecomapcostarica.com/map/index.shtml Obviously this lacks wider Costa Rica coverage, but it performs better at high levels of zoom. These maps demonstrate the wide range of online map technologies that can be mixed in one application. The VE map mixes MapServer, Shape Files, GeoTIFF, WMS, Virtual Earth, OpenLayers, and KML! This excludes the survey grid which is drawn at runtime with Javascript. Both OpenLayers and MapServer support a wide range of data sources, so this is a mere sampling of what is possible. An article describing the use of OpenLayers with Virtual Earth will be published on the http://www.mp2kmag.com website in the next few days. This uses an example that takes a SHP overlay layer from MapServer using WMS.Richard -- Richard Marsden Winwaed Software Technology LLC http://www.winwaed.com Tools and Add-ins for MapPoint - http://www.mapping-tools.com

    I'm assuming you want to put advertisements on the bing.com/maps consumer site. There are a lot of restrictions around this and unless the data is owned by you and realivent what ever Map App you create then chances are it won't be approved. So general
    advertisements for Amazon/store product ads/ newsletter signup will not be allowed. Also, if these types of advertisements are posted to the MSDN Forums or the Bing Maps Blog comments they will be removed and the account which posted them will be subject to

    Hi !
    I'm currently developing a Windows Phone 7 app in which I would like to display a map with a layer of the road traffic.
    First, I tried to display a Bing AJAX Map through the webBrowser control. If the map is displayed, the UX is just awful. In fact, the webBrowser control doesn't allow the user to navigate or zoom with his fingers. It captures all the manipulations and doesn't
    apply them on its content.

    Then, I tried to use the Bing Maps control and override the Tile layer with another API like the Nokia one or the OpenStreetMap one (like explained on the Nokia wiki). It works, but none of these API allows to display a traffic layer (or I can't find the
    way to do it).
    Finally, I used the trick to use the Google Maps tiles with a traffic info layer. If it works, I'm pretty sure that this solution is not legal. Some apps on the Windows Phone Store display the Google Maps with a traffic layer, but if they don't use the Bing
    Map control and override the Tile layer, I don't know how they do...
    Does someone know how to display a map with a traffic layer into a Windows Phone 7 app in a legal way ? Did I miss something ?
    I really hope that someone will be able to help me !

    DB:2.69:All Bing Metro Apps I.E. Finance, Sports, News, Map Are Offline Despite Internet Connection Is On sm

    Hi Eddie,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community, the best place for all your Windows related queries.

    From your issue description, I understand all the Modern User Interface apps are showing offline when your system is connected to the internet.

    Could you answer few questions:
    1. When did the apps work fine for the last time?
    2. Do you get any error message while trying to access the apps?
    3. Have you made any recent changes to the computer prior to the issue?

    Windows firewall would have blocked the apps leading to the problem.

    I would suggest you to follow these methods and check.

    Method 1:
    Step 1:
    Run Apps Troubleshooter
    Download and run the Modern UI App troubleshooter.
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/4/F24D0C03-4181-4E5B-A23B-5C3A6B5974E3/apps.diagcab
    Step 2:
    I would suggest you to go through the link and follow the given steps. Here is the link for your reference.
    What to do if you have problems with an app
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/what-troubleshoot-problems-app

    Method 2:
    Allow the apps through Windows firewall
    Follow these steps to allow the apps through Windows firewall.
    a. Press Windows key + X and type
    Windows firewall.
    b. Select Windows firewall.
    c. Select Allow apps or features through Windows firewall
    on the left hand pane and click on Change Settings.
    d. Put check marks before the app and under
    Private and Public.
    e. Click on Ok.

    Reference:
    What are the risks of allowing apps through a firewall?
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/risks-of-allowing-apps-through-firewall

    Method 3:
    Clean boot: To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software
    conflicts. Here is the link for your reference to perform clean boot.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
    Note: Please go through step 3 of the Kb to keep the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue

    Method 4:
    Disable proxy connection
    If you are using any Proxy connection, then try disabling the proxy connection and check.
    Follow the steps to disable proxy:
    a. Click the Gearbox at the top right corner in
    Internet Explorer.
    b. Click the Tools button, and then click
    Internet Options.
    c. Click the Connections tab, and then click
    LAN settings.
    d. Uncheck the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.
    e. Click Ok.

    Hope it helps. For further Windows related queries feel free to get back to us.

    As far as pushpin you will have to eitherstick with one provided there, or figure out how to place your own manually.

    Another thing you can do, is to manually build that image: just find out which webservice bing maps control is getting their tiles from, and query that service yourself, to get tiles using quadkey, and then place our own pushpin on top.

    Within the Mapviewer API they allow you to use either Bing or Google tile layers for your map. I was just wondering what the functional advantages of using Mapviewer (with those layers added) would be versus just using Google or Bing directly through their own javascript APIs.

    Thanks.

    Hello,

    if you just want to display google or bing maps, than there is no functional advantage.

    But if you want to display your own data on top of the googel or bing maps, than you get the whole advantages of mapviewer.

    Of course you can use the google api to display your own data, but you won't get the mapviewer advantages like pre rendering, caching, fois etc.

    I'm interested in using the Silverlight map control but I'd need to be able to completely swap out the bing base maps and usebase maps provided by our map data provider. I know how to render our opaque base
    maps on top of the bing base maps to give the appearance we need, but from both a performance perspective and a licensing perspective this is not a workable solution.Is there a supported way to completely
    disable thebing tile fetch and replace with our own quadkey base tiles?

    DB:2.65:Replacing Bing Base Map In Silverlight Map Control. 87

    Sorry, I haven't read the license, etc., but you can use control without the key like this:

    1 public class NoCredentialsProvider : CredentialsProvider
    2 {
    3 public override void GetCredentials(ActionMicrosoft.Maps.MapControl.Credentials callback)
    4 {
    5 }
    6 }

    and in codebehind:
    map.CredentialsProvider = new NoCredentialsProvider();
    where map is your Bing Maps control.
    At least I do so :)

    DB:2.65:Bing Map: Ajaxtileusage Or Loadstandardmap dx

    I already asked this question on stackoverflowstackoverflow postand didn't get any response. so I am going to try my luck here as well.
    Based on this article
    Bing Map Usage, there are 2 ways to load the Bing Map:

    1. AJAXTileUsage, create a map session with bing map key and download the map tile: 8 map tile download is counted as one
    non-billable transaction
    2. LoadStandardMap, a map tile URL is used to download a map tile using a Bing Maps Key. 8 map tile download is counted as a
    billable transaction.

    There is cost implication here. So obviously we should try to use the AJAXTileUsage.

    However based on current reading and internet search, I am a little confused about what we are using right now. Basically we are just using Bing Map Ajax Control 7.0 Map class (see link). Our
    code doesn't really need to handle the map tile download ourselves.

    Based on the http traffic capture from fiddler, here are the steps:

    1. client sends web services request to https://dev.virtualearth.net/webservices/v1/LoggingService/LoggingService.svc/Log with a bing map key
    2. a session id is created and returned to client
    3. map tiles are download, the download URL is like this: https://t0.ssl.ak.dynamic.tiles.virtualearth.net/comp/ch/0320?mkt=en-usit=G,Lshading=hillog=30n=zkey=xxxxxxxxxJeOuGjaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxFc-Jxxxxxxxxxxxxxy_xxxxxx, (I replace
    some characters with xxx there). Interesting part is that this key is neither my bing map key nor my session id. I guess that it might contain the session id information within it although I am not sure how to decipher it.
    4. If I move around on the map, more tiles will be downloaded with similar above URL (with some difference at the number after comp/ch. It should be map tile quadkey there)

    From post:
    bing map reporting tips:

    Many of the Bing Maps API’s have a method for getting the credentials from the map after you
    have loaded it using a valid Bing Maps key. One often overlooked feature is that, by getting the
    credentials from the map, you do not get back your original Bing Maps key. Instead, you get a
    special session key which you can use as a Bing Maps key to make requests to the Bing Maps
    services. By doing this, all transactions occurred by this session key will be non-billable.
    Many developers overlook this feature and opt to simply use their original Bing Maps key, not
    knowing that they are actually incurring more billable transactions than they need to
    So based on above information, the mystery key for downloading map tile should be the session key.
    So does this mean that we are using AJAXTileUsage instead of LoadStandardMap? If so, it would be great since our tile usage won't be counted as billable. I tested with Bing Map trial key, however it seems that Bing Map Usage Report at Bing Map portal is
    not recording my usage even after couple days are already passed, so I could not figure out from there.

    It would be really appreciated if someone could confirm the above points.

    DB:2.65:Bing Map: Ajaxtileusage Or Loadstandardmap dx

    If you are using one of the Bing Maps V7 JavaScriptcontrols all tiles are counted under the AJAXTileUsage category. The only time tile usage is billed is if they are accessed directly or perhaps if you are using one of the old map controls
    The reports in the Bing Maps portal take a severaldays to a week tosync due to the number of servers/data centers/users/and tranactions generated.http://rbrundritt.wordpress.com

    DB:2.62:Bing Maps Silverlight Control: Slow Map Tile Rendering dc

    Hi,
    I am facing a serious issue here. It appears that the Bing Maps SIlverlight control

    Works slow on low-spec computers and Mac;

    Works much slower than one used forhttp://www.bing.com/maps/explore/.
    The symptoms of my problem are: initially map is blurred, then square-by-square map tiles are being rendered and in ~30 second
    time map is clearly seen.
    The test scenario is the following: I create a blank Silverlight 4 application with the only user control which has a Microsoft.Maps.MapControl.Map:
    m:Mapx:Name=BingOriginalCredentialsProvider=[MyBingKey]/
    For testing I use three computers:

    High-spec (P4 2.7GHz, 3GB RAM, Intel G45 Express, Windows 7);

    Low-spec (Celeron 1.2GHz, 750MB RAM, Windows XP);

    MacBook Pro (2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, Snow Leopard).
    I host this project on a dedicated server. Internet speed during tests was ~10Mbs.

    For my tests I open two browser (any) instances my application on the left,
    http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/ on the right. I zoom into the same place on both maps and the result is surprising:
    http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/ renders all map tiles almost instantly on all three computers, but my own Bing Map takes some 5-10 seconds to render on a high-spec computer, and 30-40 seconds on a low-spec computer
    and Mac.
    For the second test case I have used new Bing Maps road imagery tile source in the following way:
    m:Map x:Name=BingExplore CredentialsProvider=[MyBingKey]

    m:Map.Mode

    mCore:MercatorMode /

    /m:Map.Mode

    m:Map.Children

    m:MapTileLayer

    m:MapTileLayer.TileSources

    local:NewBingMapsTileSource /

    /m:MapTileLayer.TileSources

    /m:MapTileLayer

    /m:Map.Children

    /m:Map
    public class NewBingMapsTileSource : Microsoft.Maps.MapControl.TileSource

    {

    public NewBingMapsTileSource()

    : base({UriScheme}://ecn.t{subdomain}.tiles.virtualearth.net/tiles/r{quadkey}?g=530mkt=EN-USlbl=l1stl=hshading=hilln=z)

    { }

    }
    Tested this on my three computers results are the same: 5-10 seconds for high-spec computer, 30-40 seconds for low-spec one and Mac.
    For the third case I have used Google Maps tile source:
    m:Map x:Name=Google CredentialsProvider=[MyBingKey]

    m:Map.Mode

    mCore:MercatorMode/mCore:MercatorMode

    /m:Map.Mode

    m:Map.Children

    m:MapTileLayer

    m:MapTileLayer.TileSources

    local:GoogleMapsRoadTileSource/local:GoogleMapsRoadTileSource

    /m:MapTileLayer.TileSources

    /m:MapTileLayer

    /m:Map.Children

    /m:Map
    public class GoogleMapsRoadTileSource : GoogleMapsTileSourceBase

    {

    public GoogleMapsRoadTileSource()

    : base(http://mt{0}.google.com/vt/lyrs=m@128hl=enx={1}y={2}z={3}s=)

    { }

    }

    public abstract class GoogleMapsTileSourceBase : Microsoft.Maps.MapControl.TileSource

    {

    public GoogleMapsTileSourceBase(string uriFormat)

    : base(uriFormat)

    { }

    public override System.Uri GetUri(int x, int y, int zoomLevel)

    {

    return new Uri(string.Format(this.UriFormat, new Random().Next() % 4, x, y, zoomLevel));

    }

    }
    Surprisingly, Google tiles were downloaded and rendered a bit faster than standard Bing ones, but still way slower than
    http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/.
    In order to measure the connectivity to Bing Maps tile servers, I have used the following algorithm:
    private WebClient m_BingWC;
    private void MeasureBingMaps()
    {

    var miliseconds = 0;

    var counter = 0;

    var size = 0.0;

    var timer = new DispatcherTimer { Interval = TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(1) };
    timer.Tick = (s, args) = { miliseconds; };

    if (m_BingWC != null)

    m_BingWC.CancelAsync();

    m_BingWC = new WebClient();

    m_BingWC.OpenReadCompleted = (s, args) =

    {

    if (args.Error == null)

    {

    counter;

    size = args.Result.Length;
    args.Result.Dispose();

    }

    if (counter 500)

    {

    var url = string.Format(https://ecn.t3.tiles.virtualearth.net/tiles/h02{0}{1}{2}{3}3.png?g=392,

    new Random().Next(3),

    new Random().Next(3),

    new Random().Next(3),

    new Random().Next(3));

    m_BingWC.OpenReadAsync(new Uri(url, UriKind.RelativeOrAbsolute));

    }

    else

    {

    timer.Stop();

    }

    AverageDownloadSpeedLabel.Context = miliseconds == 0 ? 0 : Math.Round((size / 1024.0) / (miliseconds / 1000.0));

    };

    m_BingWC.OpenReadAsync(new Uri(https://ecn.t3.tiles.virtualearth.net/tiles/h0233233.png?g=392),

    UriKind.RelativeOrAbsolute);

    timer.Start();
    }
    By doing so, I have concluded that Bing Map tiles are being downloaded at a speed of ~2Mbs, which is obviously enough. Moreover, visually it looks like tile rendering
    takes more time than tile download.
    The questions are:

    Why do I experience slow map tile rendering?

    Is there a way to improve the performance of Bing Maps Silverlight control in order to provide a better user experience?

    DB:2.62:Bing Maps Silverlight Control: Slow Map Tile Rendering dc

    Richard,
    I'm finding several old threads such as this one discussing how to improve the performance of the Bing Map control. These discussion are in the context of silverlight in a browser and using GPU Acceleration and setting CacheMode to BitmapCache (but
    never show how to do that).
    My app is a Silverlight Windows Phone 7 app. We don't have a web page hosting us so setting GPU Acceleration is a mystery in WP7.
    System.Windows.Media.BitmapCache myCache = new System.Windows.Media.BitmapCache();
    Map.CacheMode = myCache;
    The above code seems to improve rendering of map areas we have previously been over(unless it's my imagination).
    The Microsoft MAPS application performs about ~300% better than the mapcontrol simply thrown onto the display with not tuning. Do you know of any tuning tips for WP7 map control?
    Thanks, Dean.net Developer

    doing since they're end users, not developers). Me and my CTO just can't get the "Map App" to load at all, saying "problem loading map app".

    We're wondering if Bing Maps is still supporting "Map Apps", and if so, what needs to be done to get this going again for our users?

    As the map changes views you will want to remove tiles and re-add them as needed. Using a simple list containing the quadkeys of all the rendered tiles is an easy way to keep track of what tiles have been loaded to the map. The memory usage is not that
    different as the same calculations need to be done by the base map layer normally to render the map tiles. Some of the things that you do lose is the transition effects and the wrap around effect when zoomed out.( you will only ever see one map, although the
    tiles will wrap as you move east or west.) I have functional code that I plan to turn into a blog post in the near future once cleared to do so.http://rbrundritt.wordpress.com

    Hello
    I am having problem while generating tile layer. It is working perfectly, it generates folders and images inside them but the pictures are empty (the base map is rendering ok). What could be the problem?
    MapViewer is deployed on WebLogic 10.3 server.

    are all the pictures empty or just some of them? Could it be those pictures are part of an empty area? can you also check the MapViewer log file to see if there is any error messages that might indicate problems when generating the tiles.

    DB:2.58:No Kml In Bing Maps V7 Ajax!? aa

    Well I started to port the EcoMapCostaRica.com maps to Bing Maps AJAX v7. So far it has been fairly simple. Of course all the class names have changed. The code for the tile layers is now simpler, as is the code the JavaScript-drawn survey grid layer (now
    an EntityCollection). With two tile layers it looks to be working fine on the ipad with multi-touch. All good stuff even if it takes time to re-write.
    However I find there's no KML support! This is a big black mark for v7 as far as this project is concerned. All the data (ground-derived mapping, data locations, etc) are in KML. There are a range of reasons for this - KML can be easily hacked in the
    field, I have some scripts that convert data into KML, it can support pushpin-popups as well as vector data, and it is an industry standard. KML also carries rendering information (unlike GeoRSS and GML). In fact that is why KML has become the de facto standard
    for web map annotation - it is relatively simple but includes style information. (contrast with GML which is excellent for rich data transfer but is usually complex in implementation and contains no style information)
    Yes I've searched the web and seen Rick Brundritt's GeoRSS parser. Unfortunately that will not work for me: I need style info (for example a KML layer file will typically have multiple shapes with different colors or pins) that GeoRSS does not support; also
    it uses ASP.NET which isn't available. I guess I could write my own parser, but quite frankly, I think my time is better spent getting one of the other versions working better (eg. layers and Z-order with Google Maps; or updating the original 'classic'
    OpenLayers version; or 'making do' with v6 even though it is broken in Firefox)

    Richard Marsden

    DB:2.58:No Kml In Bing Maps V7 Ajax!? aa

    From what I've been told it will be a while before v6.3 will be retired as moving people to v7 would require a complete rebuild of applications. I do not expect them to retire that API anytime soon. As for KML support, I agree with Alastair that the support
    for this has always been minimal and I've had a lot of people convert their KML files to GeoRSS as that was better supported in v6.3. That said adding basic KML support to v7 isn't overly difficult. I wrote a plugin for GeoRSS support a few months back. I
    have KML on my TODO list but that list is a mile long so I'm not sure if/when I'll get to it.Windows Live Developer MVP - http://rbrundritt.wordpress.com | http://inknowledge.co.uk

    DB:2.57:Using The Subdued Map Tile c1

    Hi there - I'm writing the specs for a web application using Bing Maps. I would like our programmers to use the subdued base map I've seen in use at Facebook and Zillow. I know my question is broad, but I need a few clues to start our programmers in the
    right direction, assuming we have the correct licensing and tools. If we don't, then I need to find out what tools and/or licensing we need to be able to make use of the base map.

    The only reference I could find to the subdued color tile was in an aritcle about Facebook using the newly developed tile for their apps. Apparently, whereas Bing Maps normally uses a tiled containing
    astl=hparameter, Facebook is now using customized code to obtain the subdued basemap.

    The parameter that both Facebook and Zillow use is stl=fb.

    Thanks for your help.

    Kelley

    (For reference, the article: Styled Bing Maps Hit the Facebook Timeline
    Adam DuVander, October 10th, 2011

    Facebook's Timeline... makes broad use of the Bing Maps API. Similarly, the Facebook Places feature also incorporated Bing, but now both maps use a different, more simplified style. The new style most notably does away with the purple freeways the clashed
    with the social network’s muted blue color scheme. Smaller roads are also given a subtle shading at outer zoom levels, which makes for a less messy map.

    ....

    Bing tiles normally contain a stl=h parameter. On Facebook, that is changed to stl=fb.

    If a map tile wasn't available in the cache it would forward the request on through our companies main proxy server toBing to get the map tile and then store it in the cache. The proxy would wake up periodically tosee if any other machines
    within the building havemap tiles you don't have. If any are foundthey are copied to your local cache. So couple questions:
    1) Is this allowed under Bing's terms and conditions?
    2) Will Silverlight allow us to put a local proxy between our Silverlight app and Bing, or does it only allow you to use the IE proxy settings.
    Thanks

    DB:2.55:Creating A Proxy To Handle Bing Map Calls From Silverlight For Caching 1j

    It is possible to do this with Bing Maps for some of the map data, however this will definitely require a Bing Maps License.

    In terms of the Silverlight control allowing a proxy, this can be accomplished by removing the default layers and using your proxy as a tile server and overlay the tiles as a custom tile layer.

    I would recommend getting in contact with our licensing team at
    maplic@microsoft.com who will be able to give you more information around the licensing side of things. They will likely loop in a local sales resource to assist with licensing and they can bring in one of our technical people who can assist with how this

    DB:2.53:Silverlight Map: Different Tile Source For Area Of Map 3z

    I've a requirement to display certain regions on a map using a different tile source, at selected zoom levels. I'm using the OpenStreetMap tile source as a test bed, so most of the map contains the normal Bing tiles, while a region contains the OSM tiles. I've defined the tile source as a LocationRectTileSource and passed in my small bounding rectangle and zoom range, but this doesn't seem to have any effect; it shows the entire OSM map, not just the region. So I modified by tile source GetUri method so this it checks coverage (using code from the base class, but pulled out as it's private, so I can test). My GetUri method now does:         public override Uri GetUri(int x, int y, int zoomLevel)         {             Uri uri = null;             if (this.Covers(x, y, zoomLevel))             {                 uri = new Uri(String.Format(this.UriFormat, x, y, zoomLevel));             }             else             {                 uri = base.GetUri(x, y, zoomLevel);             }             return uri;         } And this appears to work. Sort of. The OSM region shown is larger than my bounding rectangle I've defined, and doesn't seem to zoom, it just stays at the zoom level it rendered when first loaded. So am I missing something obvious about a LocationRecttileSource? The interactive SDK shows overlapping with the lidar data, so is it just dependent upon the tiles returned? aside Ideally I really want PolygonTileSource, since I want to clip the embedded tile source to a polygon, but that's another issue. I suspect I might have to do something similar to Richard's Dynamic Tile Layers project. /aside

    DB:2.53:Silverlight Map: Different Tile Source For Area Of Map 3z

    Ah, good to know about that 404 thing, I didn't know that. That might be a good solution. I've been playing around with a server solution, proxying the request; this may be useful to cache the custom tiles too, to help with performance, and I could then keep track of the 404s from the remote source. Overriding ArialMode; interesting idea. I shall have a think about that. I think layering works; I was looking at the edge this weekend, and the custom tile at the very edge seemed to have the Bing tile underneath it; I could clearly see the road from the Bing tile underneath, where it was just out of alignment. Thanks d

    I need some help figuring out how to get OpenLayers to load in the BlackBerry browser (to eventually be used in a webworks application).

    I am using:

    BlackBerry Widget SDK v1.5.0.18

    9800 - 6.0.0.227 simulator (included in SDK)

    Windows XP SP2 within VirtualBox OSE on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

    I was planning on including a screenshot of the OpenLayers page (which has a map on it), but the "insert/edit image" button is crashing my browser page. What I am seeing, is the browser drawing the frame of the map, but not filling it. I am using XP because it is relatively light-weight and thus better suited for running as a virtual machine.

    If you need more information, please instruct me on how to retrieve it. I appreciate your time and expertise,

    Hey guys, i have a problem showing an Openlayers map on bbUI or jQuery mobile, the thing is the meta viewport gets set by the frameworks at scale=0.44, which makes the map smaller and the text unreadable. I've tried setting the zoom at 2 and it makes the map bigger, but when i try to zoom by pinching it doesn't work well because it can't detect the right position of where im pinching (i had to set the width and height at half to use the zoom at 2). If i set the page at scale=1.0 the action bar from bbUI grows in size, almost double. Do any of you had a similar problem? Could you solve it? Thanks!

    Thank youanzor_b. Iasked for assistance in the bbUI forum and they said the scale problem im having will get fixed in the 1.0 release. In the mean time iwill look into your temporary solution and try something out.

    I'll try this again...
    I'm randomly seeing the bing maps tile server layer on mymap report return random patches of 'Tile server timeout: The tile server took 10000 milliseconds to respond'. It doesn't seem to matter what size the map is, or how detailed the area is... and
    this is not a map that is deployed as of yet - it's only in development, so it's not like we're making any more than a single request.Is there a way I can fix this? Maybe increase the limit to more than 10 seconds? And what kind of QoS is there for the
    bing maps layer? I don't see anywhere to enter ourbing app devcredentials and such for the bing layer so is this even supported for paying customers?

    DB:2.51:Tile Server Timeout xa

    Many thanks, Ivor!
    The problem seems to happen exclusively on our larger (36x36) map reports, which is what makes me think a longer timeout would maybe help. I'll test and see.

    DB:2.49:How To Draw An Area And Retrieve The Area Code In Bing Maps? f3

    HiWe have a requirement to plot an area on Bing MAP. Is there a out of box feature in Bing Map to plot a custom area on the MAP and get the area code to store in the backend? Later when this area code is retrieved  from the backend this area should be used to display on the Map.What is tile layer? Is there an option to plot an area and mark it as a tile layer and get the data to store in the backend and use it for display later?

    DB:2.49:How To Draw An Area And Retrieve The Area Code In Bing Maps? f3

    What do you mean by area code... like a postal code? You could reverse-geocode a point that lay somewhere within the area and retrieve the postcode of that address, but what if your hand-drawn polygon covered several areas? Do you want to store the aggregate shape of all the areas, or just the one closest to the centre of the shape?As for retrieving data from the database, it would be very easy to store the exact polygon that was drawn, but it sounds like you want to 'snap' it to fit the closest postal area, which means that you would have to have this information stored in your database. Depending on where you are in the world this information might be freely available, but in most countries it is not so you'll have to acquire this data first.Bing maps displays two sorts of data - vector data (shapes) and raster data (tiles). Vector data allows you to have hover-over effects such as highlighting which shape the mouse cursor is over, handling when you click on a shape etc., but vector data can be complex, especially if you were to display lots of points or copmlicated shapes. Tile layers are raster images (e.g. .jpgs / .pngs) that are displayed on top of the map. They are quick to download and good for displaying generalised thematic data (e.g. heatmaps) but do not allow for much interactivity because they are essentially just static pictures drawn on the map. Beginning Spatial with SQL Server

    DB:2.48:Set Tile Layer Bounds In Bing Map Ajax V7.0 ac

    You don't set a bounding box for a tilelayer in v7 but it's easy to set this behaviour manually:- in the function you pass to the UriConstructor of the TileSource, check the value of tile.x and tile.y to see if they lie outside the range of your desired
    bounding box - if they do, simply pass back a blank tile image.
    As for why it's repeating again and again, it sounds like you've hardcoded in an image string, rather than provided a string with placeholders to get replaced with the desired quadkey tile, but without seeing your code it's impossible to tell.twitter: @alastaira blog: http://alastaira.wordpress.com/

    Hi Sivaraman,
    Per my understanding, if you want to download offline map, you should to use the default approach in

    this reference. Does you want to use the map while downloading the tile pictures? If so, I think you should write your code to achieve this goal. The REST API returns XML or JSON response, you can get the tile image URL from this response. Download it and
    save in storage and then use LocalMapTileDataSource to add that tile image. See Overlaying tiles stored as files in local storage section from

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/xaml/dn632728.aspx.

    $(.map).attr(src, https://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/v1/Imagery/Map/mapImagery/ lat , long /zoomLvl?pp= lat , long ;64key= store(bingMapSessionId));
    The above method works fine. What I would like to do is that instead of setting the url directly, I want to use the jquery ajax to create the url and pass the data in like this
    $.ajax({
    url: https://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/v1/Imagery/Map/ mapImagery / lat , long / zoomLvl,
    data: {
    pushpin: lat , long ;64,
    key: store(bingMapSessionId)
    },
    success: function (data) {
    $(.map).attr(src, the img return);
    },
    error: function (e) {
    window.console console.log(e);
    }
    });

    The problem is that I am getting aXMLHttpRequest .... required Cross Origin Resource Sharing (CORS).
    and the errorOrigin https//:...net not found in Access-Control-Allow-Origin header. I was wondering if the bing map tile are served with CORS permission? Or is there an alternative to getting the map with out directly setting the src to the url. I
    am fully aware of the AJAX map control that is available, but that counts as a billable transaction every time the control loads, and I did not require the interactivity, just the static map.

    DB:2.47:Bing Maps Cross-Domain (Cors) 91

    The CORS issue is because you are trying to access a service that is on a different domain. When you do this using the $.ajax function you have to use jsonp. That said, you really should just load the image into a src attribute of an image, there is no
    reason to use the $.ajax method. Here is some more info on loading images using jQuery:

    With either the Silverlight, WP7 or Ajax map controls, does the presence or absence of a Cache-Control header on individual tile .png files displayed viaa custom tile layer affect performance of the control?
    Another way of asking the question: Since my custom tiles almost never change, and users often revisit the same map areas, are there any Cache-Control or other HTTP header fields honored by the Bing map control which I should be using to reduce networkbandwidth?

    DB:2.47:Custom Tile Layers And Cache-Control Http Header k3

    Yes. If you have cache information on your tiles the Bing Maps controls will honour it and pull the tiles from the cache rather than from the server.http://rbrundritt.wordpress.com

    DB:2.47:Stoppropagation Or Deactivate Panning 8s

    How do I stop event propagation to the base tile layer (the map)? I want to draw on the map or prevent the map from listening to polygon clicks.

    Please follow these steps to setup the demo:

    Visit the
    Bing Maps V7 Interactive SDKExpand the Attach Map Events and run the Event click exampleThen run this custom code in the textarea

    function StartDragHandler(e) {
    // What code will stop propagation? I want to temporarily disable the panning when dragging inside the blue rectangle
    }

    map.entities.clear();
    latlon = map.getCenter();

    var rectangle = new Microsoft.Maps.Polygon([new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude-1, latlon.longitude-1), new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude1, latlon.longitude-1), new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude1, latlon.longitude), new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude-1, latlon.longitude), new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude-1, latlon.longitude-1)], null);

    Microsoft.Maps.Events.addHandler(rectangle, 'dragstart', StartDragHandler);
    //Microsoft.Maps.Events.addHandler(rectangle, 'drag', DragHandler);
    //Microsoft.Maps.Events.addHandler(rectangle, 'dragend', EndDragHandler);

    map.setView( {zoom:6});
    map.entities.push(rectangle);

    DB:2.47:Stoppropagation Or Deactivate Panning 8s

    This is one way to do it. Register for mousedown on the rectangle and then disable map panning. Register for mouseup on the map and then enable map panning:
    function HandleMouseDown(e) {
    map.setOptions({disablePanning:true});
    }

    function HandleMouseUp(e)
    {
    map.setOptions({disablePanning:false});
    }

    map.entities.clear();
    latlon = map.getCenter();

    var rectangle = new Microsoft.Maps.Polygon([new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude-1, latlon.longitude-1), new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude1, latlon.longitude-1), new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude1, latlon.longitude), new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude-1, latlon.longitude), new Microsoft.Maps.Location(latlon.latitude-1, latlon.longitude-1)], null);

    Microsoft.Maps.Events.addHandler(rectangle, 'mousedown', HandleMouseDown);
    Microsoft.Maps.Events.addHandler(map, 'mouseup', HandleMouseUp);

    map.setView( {zoom:6});
    map.entities.push(rectangle);

    Hi all,

    i am using Bing map tiles in my Android application. I download tiles from http://h0.ortho.tiles.virtualearth.net/tiles/hquadkey.jpeg?g=131 and it works fine, but i understand that i need to append a token to this URL in order to make this operation
    legal (and ask some kind of special permission from Microsoft). It is all well explained here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtualearth/archive/2008/04/29/tracking-virtual-earth-tile-usage.aspx. But this post is from 2008 and i found on msdn site that in 2012,
    token-auth system will be replaced with key auth system.

    Does anybody know how can i perform the direct tile access with this new auth system?

    Thanks in advance

    DB:2.46:Direct Access To Bing Tiles And Api Key dp

    I did a test with the Bing Maps Silverlight control. This control is also accessing the tile servers directly.
    This control is executing the following requests to retrieve the imagery tiles:

    Step 1:calling the Logging service (http://dev.virtualearth.net/webservices/v1/LoggingService/LoggingService.svc)
    Step 2: calling the Imagery service (http://dev.virtualearth.net/webservices/v1/ImageryService/ImageryService.svc)
    With the Imagery service (methodGetImageryMetadata)you can retrieve the url's to the tile servers. To call this service you have to provide a valid Bing Map key
    Step 3: calling the tile server directly with url's from Step 2. In case of the Bing Maps Silverlight control this is for example:http://ecn.t3.tiles.virtualearth.net/tiles/r123.png?g=1mkt=en-USshading=hilln=z.
    In this step the Bing Maps key is not part of the url.

    Only for the Logging service mentioned in Step 1 there is no online documentation available.

I wonder if Bing Maps API provide such services?I read some information about Bing Maps Web Services, some pages on the net said it can give static image (or URL to the static image),but the documentation about Web Services on MSDN provides only C# sample codes, and it seems it requires .NET to work on.So, are there any services from Bing Maps API that can satisfy my needs?Many thanks.

    In most cases, it seems that solutions use a back-end web server to serve the static images through HTTP rather than have the device itself request the image from the web service directly.

    DB:2.46:Bugs In Gettileuri Tiledownloadcompleted cf

    I am writing a Metro app and I have found two bugs in the Bing Maps API. I add two MapTileLayer instances to my Map, each with a GetTileUri and a TileDownloadCompleted event.
    The GetTileUri callback I set for the first layer is called for both layers. The function for the second layer is never called; the first layer's callback gets called instead. I end up with two layers containing identical tiles. However, it works properly
    if I put my two tile layers in separate Maps. It appears that you can only have a single layer per map which implements GetTileUri.
    The TileDownloadCompleted event is called before my layer finishes downloading. It appears that it gets called when the underlying base map layer with roads/aerial tiles finishes loading. My debug logging shows that GetTileUri is called several times after
    TileDownloadCompleted is called.
    I am able to work around this by using the Map's TileDownloadCompleted event, which is called when both the base map layer and my custom layer finish. However, this does not give me the per-layer information I was hoping for.

    Since Bing is appearing to be the map of choice for RIM, I was wondering if anyone knows of a Bing API available that will work with Tablet OS for Air SDK. I'm looking for basic mapping, location identification, and distance between coordinates, and ability to pinpoint multiple points from coordinates on a basic map.

    I've read a few threads about integrating Google maps, but just figured that Bing integration might eventually happen natively.

    DB:2.46:Bing Api? aj

    You can integrate Google maps fairly easily. I do not know of Bing providing a Flex/AIR/Flash SDK since that would compete against their Silverlight product which has never gained too much acceptance. You could probably display Bing inside web stage view but then you would be able to control it much. Distance between lat/lon points is not dependent on the mapping SDK. That is some basic math assuming spherical earth and great circle distances. RIM has their own mapping system as well that might get ported over at some point. As long as the consumer has choices on mapping system, then all is fine.

    Microsoft encourages us to store our data in the azure cloud, and to use their bing maps api in phone apps.

    But those services come at a monthly cost based on the number of transactions. However, we can not charge monthly costs for our apps by means of a subscription.
    So I can only charge the user of the app once, while from then on I have to pay for each time the user fetches a static image map from Bing maps ??
    Or is there an alternative solution for Phone Apps using Bing Maps ? Static Imagery is listed as a billable transaction in the Bing Maps api.
    (G**gle Maps' static imagery api is free, but I would prefer to integrate Bing Maps.

    I've read something about Bing Maps Tasks on the forums too. is that an alternative solution ?

    I've came across a similar issue in the past. Some ideas would be to have advertisements on your app to bring money in that way. If you go this route you could give your app away for free and have the advertisers pay for the usage. If your a company on
    the other hand you might not want advertising on your app.Windows Live Developer MVP - http://rbrundritt.spaces.live.com

    DB:2.45:Maps Ajax Api Usage Seems Too High zp

    Our API usage is over 1,000,000 sessions/year - way over the free limit.
    The 'free' limit is a 125,000 sessions (= map page views?) a year - about 400 per day.
    Tile usage is also monitored, but currently 'free'. Our tile usage is quite low.
    This seems strange as (according to google analytics) we don't get 1,000,000 map-page-views a year - more like 1% of that!
    Could it be 'search-engine' web crawlers causing map 'sessions'
    This is plausible - we have 10,000 UK hill pages (with OS maps), so if google bing yahoo each index them them once a month, that would account for the high usage.
    So, to keep under the 'free' limit, on these (non-core) pages,
    a) I could leave the map un-initialised, but with a 'click to view map' button, so only those who actually want the map will see it.
    b) I could detect robots (by the user-agent string), and then not initialise the map
    c) Could the Maps API be clever, and not initialise for robots, solving the problem for everyone?
    Thoughts?
    Andrew

    DB:2.45:Maps Ajax Api Usage Seems Too High zp

    Indexing by search engines doesn't generate any transactions as they don't load the JavaScript map, so robots are nto generating these transactions. Sessions are only one type of transactions. There are a lot of other transactions that are likely a part
    of the 1Myear you are seeing in reports. Geocoding, routing, and pretty much any request to the services generates transactions. If you look at the report by category you can see a break down of these transactions.
    Sessions != page views. A session is created when ever you load a map. If you have more than one map on a page that would generate more sessions. Sessions are a type of transactions. There are other transactions that count towards your usage as well. A document
    outlining these can be found here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff859477.aspx
    You don't have to load the map when the page loads. You can always delay the loading of the map until it's needed. This is actually a recommended best practice if the map is only an option on your site.
    If you send me an email at ricky_brundritt at Hotmail.com with your account id or bing maps key I'll look into the repots for you and see if I can explain where your transactions are coming from. If you can send me a link to your webpage with the maps, then
    I can also take a look there.
