I am trying to understand how to record with midi on multitracks at the same time.

    Go to my website

    http://vidsounds.com/

and you will see the way I am making music. I need to record the midi info on seperate tracks to make it easier to edit the notes. I'm not a musician or keyboardist. The keyboards I use have phrase arpeggios that one key triggers. My setup that you will see on my website has six multitimbral instruments and two MIDI controllers. The 2 MIDI controllers are asigned software instruments.

Yep, that is how to set up the Multiplayer record mode as described in the manual.

The question is will Logic support 3 software instruments being controlled by 3 controllers LIVE (and I do not mean will the processor allow for it - I mean can 3 controllers work at once, each with their own instrument)????? Oh, if yes, then how?

Is there a free softsynth for midi on Mac OS X, other than QT Musical Instruments?

The reason I ask is that QT does not implement all the standard controllers of the midi specification, particularly 5, 65, and 84 relating to Portamento, and 68 for Legato.

The quality and variety of instruments is ok with me.

A couple of tools I have found useful are [Midi Monitor|http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor (version 1.2.1)
    and [Mighty Midi|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11329/mighty-midi] (version 1.0, from 2003).

When I launch Midi Monitor, after having activated Apple's [IAC Driver|http://www.omegastudios.com/expertsforum/?tag=audio-midi-setup], and play midi with Metro, Midi Monitor registers nothing but clock signals at time zero. When I play ditto with QuickTime (7.6), or with [Harmony Assistant|http://www.myriad-online.com/cgi-bin/download.pl?prod=HAlang=EN] (9.4.7c), it registers nothing; but when I play with Mighty Midi, then Midi Monitor lists the midi commands I have described above.

Please listen to my [sample midi file|http://homepage.mac.com/ttelos/Fmu/MonoPortamentoLegato1a.mid] (especially if you have midi hardware) and tell me if you can find any signs of Portamento or Legato. (Legato is not so much a slide as a suppression of the second note's attack portion.)

In M.S. v. 2.2.2, I have programmed a pad patch in the ES P software instrument and discovered I could assign the keyboard's modulation wheel (MIDI controller #1) to the ES P's -1 Octave and -2 Octaves parameters, so I could reduce those to zero to make the patch less "meaty." That works great. The problem I have is that moving the mod. wheel also causes the modulation depth of VCF via the LFO to change, bringing in a nasty wah/vibrato. Strangely, the on-screen controls in the ES P for the VCF/LFO do not change when I move the wheel; only the -1 and -2 octave controls change. It seems like MIDI controller #1 is implemented, at least in this software instrument, with a default action which I don't see how to change or defeat. Ideas?Aha! I found a band aid approach! I added a third (ugh!) mapping to the mod. wheel via the Screen Control Inspector, selecting MIDI Controller | 1 (Modulation) then setting the Saved Value, Range Max and Range Min values to 0.Grace under pressure...

This is probably a silly question but I am new to Logic and find it difficult to get my answer from a manual book. I have just started using Logic Studio 9 and would like to use more than one MIDI controller independently (for example MIDI keyboard and MIDI Woodwind controller). I had no problems with connections and Logic receives MIDI from all my controllers however I would like to be able to control say my software instrument on track 1 with just a keyboard controller and my software instrument on track two with just a MIDI woodwind controlller. At the moment if I play both controllers at the same time they both effect the software instrument on the currently selected track (Mixer Channel Strip). I've used this case scenario with Cubase and Nuendo before and it was very easy to set it up. Every track had separate MIDI input device (allowing a choice of desired MIDI controller) and the destination device section (allowing the choice of either a specific software instrument or external MIDI keyboard or sound module). Is it possible to reproduce this in Logic and if so what is the procedure. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Hi everyone,I'm in a bit of a pickle and hope someone can help. Trying to use two midi controllers (Korg padKONTROL drumpad and Edirol PCR80 keyboard) in Logic Pro 8 to play multiple software instruments. My problem is this: I want to be able to control specific software instruments by their respective midi channels, and have a split keyboard, but the Edirol cannot split so this has to be done in Logic.I've set the following so far:- Korg padKONTROL transmitting on midi ch.10- EXS24 (for drums) receiving on midi ch.10 (set in inspector parameters)- Edirol transmitting on midi ch.5- Synth 1 receiving on midi ch.5, keyzone set to left hand side of keyboard (in inspector parameters)- Synth 2 receiving on midi ch.5, keyzone set to right hand side of keyboard (in inspector parameters)If I tick 'Auto Demix By Channel If Multitrack Recording' and record arm all three instruments, I can play the drums (via padKONTROL) and Synth1 (via keyboard left hand side). If I untick the auto demix setting, each controller plays multiple instruments simultaneously.I'm wondering if my Environment is setup wrong for the controller input? Here's a quick screenshot:I've tried messing with the Channelize option you can see on the left, but this doesn't appear to make any difference.I've spent a while reading the manual and can't find any other clues, but there's gotta be a way to this, surely? This is starting to do my head in, and I'd be eternally grateful for a helping hand Cheers

    Hello,

This is my situation: 4 students and 4 (electronic) pianos (that can send on different channels).
I also use Logic Pro 9.
    Midi interface with 4 ports

I want these 4 students play together performing something like an orchestral score, ie piano 1(or controller 1) plays strings, piano 2 (controller 2) wood, piano 3 (...) brass and piano 4 (...) something like percussion.

Because I'm a classical piano teacher, I want those piano's sounds really like a flute or trumpet or... For that reason I have installed AU-plugin from Garritan and don't use GM instruments.. These Garritan instruments are also used in the notation programs Sibelius and Finale.

I ask this because of the following problem:

If you make a file of 4 tracks using these software instruments and you link each separate track to a midichannel (and make it record affordable) all the 4 tracks sound no matter if you play 1 piano or controller or 2 pianos or 3 or.... I want each controller gives only 1 sound, or, one controller for one midichannel and not that one controller gives (in my case) 4 sounds. To reach this, do I really have to program Logic environment and if so, is there somebody who wants to explain or to help me with this?

    Thanks a lot,

They are not in a group. Also all the subsequent midi channels have the same software instrument on it's insert. Does that take up any extra memory? I'm used to adding new midi tracks in Pro Tools and DP and assigning them to the original instantiation just changing the midi channel. Every track is totally independant from each other. I want to solo safe the original instrument instantiation but be able to solo individual tracks within the Software instrument. Thanks,gB

    DB:3.27:How Do I Un-Group Software Instruments ac

Sorry to take so long to respond, I've been in session. After I sent this post I played around and came up with this work around but thought this just can't be how it really is. So for 1 software inst with multiple midi channels I have to add an aux for each channel. That can add up to be a lot of extra channels to search through when you have a very large session. Also if I'm working in the arrange window I actually have to look over at the mixer window to solo and instrument. I would like to be able to see everything including aux tracks in the arrange window and not have to keep changing windows just to solo or mute a instrument track. I would also like to arrange my aux tracks any place I want them. Seems like Logic only does it it's way which may not be the order I want them in.I also set the original inst channel output to no output which makes the other 3 channels do the same, so only the aux's have an output. I also have to make the first instrument come out of it's B output because the aux inputs start at 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10. Logic assumes that inst output A comes out of 1-2, but the aux inputs don't except that. That only works for a non multi-timbral inst. Now I want to automate the parameters of my instrument but when I tell it to midi CC Learn I can only use a keyboard controller. If I move the inst fader nothing happens. I see in the automation lanes that you can get to the plugin parameters, but how do you see the numbers that correspond to the parameter that I want to automate. There is a list of 1 to 255 control numbers. I tried adding a monitor in the enviroment and attaching it to the channel the instrument is on, but when I move the parameter nothing shows up on the monitor to see what controller number the knob is associated with. How do I find out the parameter controller numbers to automate?ThanksgB

For this, I should load whatever instrument I need at the patch level -- is that correct? As for switching between programs within the active instrument plugin, is it possible for some MIDI program change commands to bypass Mainstage and be sent to the plugins?I know there are many possible ways of managing this depending on my own preference, but I was wondering if there was a common-sense approach that I'm not aware of... And curious how others have set up multiple instruments and programs, and how to quickly switch among them.Thank you for any advice.

Bobby V. wrote:EDIT: on second glance, what is the EXS24 sampler? Can I create my own sets easily?

This is absolut basic knowledge and shows that you need some (basic) manual studies!

EXS24 is one of Logic/Mainstage Instruments.
And yes, you can load loops into it and trigger them with the buttons of your Korg-Controller.
First step is, go to layoutmode in MainStage and build up an exact copy of all your hardware keys, knobs , faders wheels and so on on your screen. When ready, use this as a template for all your Concerts.
As far as i can see, editing of EXS24 ist disabled in MainStage so you have to program your EXS-Instruments in Logic by now.

I like using Logic in the live setting, (Yes, I'm going to upgrade to Logic 8 eventually...) but one of the things that bothers me is that I can't figure out a way to play two soft-synths independently using two MIDI controllers. Both controllers play both instruments at the same time. I am assuming the problem is that they are both defaulting to the same MIDI channel, but I can't figure out how to change that.

I feel like this is a question that is going to have a really obvious answer...

DB:3.17:Opening Midi Files - Mapping jc

I'm running Logic 8. According to the docu I can open a midi file while pressing the option key to bypass the auto generation of software instruments. What I would like to do though is open 50 midi files and have them all automatically mapped to Reason instruments. I have these Reason instruments all defined in an open Logic file. I can copy the environment settings upon open. When the file opens though it just defaults to 16 tracks of GM instruments.

Is there a way to open a midi file and copy the instrument device mapping from an existing Logic file? I do not want to import, I want all the midi data including tempo maps.

Studio Vision use to make this really easy by having a dock. You could also do Device Mapping when importing a midi file.

DB:3.17:Opening Midi Files - Mapping jc

The Tempo is a global component. No matter what you do, you can only have one tempo map, That's just the way Logic was designed. when you import a 2nd song, it's tempo commands will be merged into what ever other tempo commands might already exist. There might be a way to make use of the nine alternative tempo maps in the global track. I never worked with Logic that way.

If your files are similar, (same instrumentation and MIDI tracks) - you could make a song template, which should speed up your process.

Another idea might be to import your your file, and then drag it to a 'No Output' file. - Don't know if that will work.

If you import your files in sequentially- song 1 at measure 1, song 2 at measure 127 etc. That should work, however I'm not sure how Logic will respond to a song that is 20,000 measure long.

Never taken it that far. Good luck

    Dear Logic users,

I have noticed recently in Activity Monitor that MIDIServer is listed as not responding, in red letters. I'm not sure how long this problem has persisted, as my system has worked very well since I bought Logic 8 when it came out last year. I have had some issues lately with MIDI devices not being recognized, forcing deletion of the instruments in the Audio and MIDI setup application and "rediscovering" them (in addition to trashing of preference files, although this was not as effective as deleting the instruments from the Audio and MIDI setup).

Googling this issue reveals very little information. Has anyone else noticed that the MIDIServer is not responding, but still MIDI data is present (i.e. by playing software synths)? The MIDIServer will launch when starting an application requiring access to the MIDI subsystem (i.e. Logic, Reason, MIDI Monitor or even the Audio and MIDI setup application itself), but turn non-responsive after about 30 seconds. This happens even with no peripherals attached, e.g. no external soundcard, no firewire hard drives, no USB keyboards, and so on.

The above mentioned quirks happen rarely, but since I use my MacBook as a instrument for playing live, it is crucial that it is rock stable (as it has been in the past), thus the sight of a non-responsive application is of course not very reassuring! Any input or hints on a remedy will be greatly appreciated.

DB:3.17:Midiserver Not Responding - Midi Still Present, But Sometimes Troublesome. 33

This happens when one opens ANY midi application, even the Audio Midi Setup.

Further more, at all times (while running midi apps or not) I have another process that is "not responding", UserEventAgent- and I don't seem to be the only one...

"Multi-timbral checkbox: Turn on to create up to 16 tracks with ascending MIDI
channel settings (starting from MIDI channel 1, on the first track, MIDI channel 2 on
the second track, and so on).

These tracks are independent of the first track, and can be individually automated,
have different regions, and so on, but all tracks are associated with (and routed
through) the same instrument channel in the Mixer. " page 186

How do you actually automate separate MIDI channels? When I try this with Kontakt, all automation in any track controls the single instrument channel. The scenario in the manual would make sense if the additional tracks created were MIDI only, but they are audio instrument tracks with the same instrument. Thoughts?

    DB:3.16:Multi-Timbral Software Instrument 8d

There have been a couple threads on this that you can dig up if you're interested.

Two advantages I know of are that certain plugs run more efficiently as one multi than as a bunch of single instruments. And loading up a multi or bank can be quicker and more convenient than loading up a bunch of individual patches.

I found a little more efficient way to change the channel. Open the track in the Hyper Editor and double click on a note row. A window will open. You can then double click on the number next to the Channel box, hit return, check the box, and click Convert -- in that order. The changes will show up in the Event List.

yes, I did. the problem was solved, i think my tutorial song is broken in terms of MIDI compatibility with recording the Virtual Instrument as stated by the Getting Started Guide. But, I did figure out how to finally create a MIDI track, and an Virtual Instrument tracks later when I created a custom template. Does anyone find it odd that you can only specify the kind of track that's going to be used after it's actually created unless using the create multiple tracks feature, and that still doesnt allow u to completely specify what kind of audio track it's gonna be when using the multiple feature (audio vs master fader vs virtual instrument)? In Digital Performer it was real easy to define the type of track being created before actually creating one identical to the one selected in the arrange window. But then again, Digital Performer didn't have all these fancy plugins and virtual instrument with barely any presets.

Thanks in advance to you environment boffins out there.

DB:3.12:Arpeggiator On Already Recorded Instruments 93

The key thing to remember is that the MIDI data in the Arrange window exists in its own right and doesn't get routed anywhere until you press play. So you need to hook up an arpeggiator before the audio instrument in the environment and route the Track to the arpeggiator, not to the instrument.

    My method would be:

    Open up Environment
Create a new layer called Arp
Create new Arpeggiator in the new layer
    Create new Audio Object
Change Audio Object to Instrument (which ever you are trying to drive)
Drag cable from Arpeggiator to the Instrument
In the Arrange Window, change assignment from the original AI to the newly created Arpeggiator layer

Functionally, this is no different from my esteemed colleagues above but I try not to overload my Audio environment layer, instead creating new ones.

I want to know if it is possible to have 2 keyboard midi controllers trigger 2 separate software instruments. I tried to facilitate a rehearsal in my studio and have one keyboard player play B4II and have the other play piano but both midi controllers triggered the selected instrument.

The first problem is I couldn't get only one controller to trigger B4. Even if I changed the channel once I got one to trigger B4 the other controller did also.

The second problem is if I clicked on any other track I lost the sound of the plugin on the instrument track (or should I say Logic 8 went out of 'Live Mode'). Cubase and Pro Tools has a drop down where you can select the controller you want to use for a particular instrument then you can choose which channel you want from that controller.

I have maybe five instruments all set to five different midi channels. I have an external midi controller, of course to trigger the instruments. But when I match the midi channel on the midi controller to the instrument I want to control, all the instruments play at the same time. I know that it's not my midi controllers fault, cause I tested both of them. And this never happened when I was using my digi002 just for protools. This also effects my Rewired program Reason2.5. A sound or drum loop in that program will play at the same as the midi instruments. I can have 5 midi instruments set to channels 1-5, and select channel 16 on my midi controller and it will still play all those instruments at the same time. Maybe I'm not the best Logic, but I read the manual, and still can't figure it out. This is fustrating because what I want to do is use my MPC sequencer to construct my instrumental, then record the midi onto the midi instruments. I know that to here the midi instruments, it has to be record unabled or something like that. Maybe that's wrong. I don't know what I'm doning wrong.

DB:3.11:All Midi Instruments Play When Only One Midi Channel Selected.&Nbsp; Not Good. f8

Your MIDI controller should stay on the same channel.
The channel it's playing is designated by the track
that you're on by the channel parameters in the
parameter window on the left. If you're using
external MIDI gear that's Multi timbral then you
need a Multi Instrument some where in your
Environment. If you name a Multi Instrument the
same as your external MIDI gear it's pretty easy to
find from a track in the Arrange window.

The only place in the environment window where I see physical and sequence input icons in the Click and Ports window. So I put a multi Instrument icon in btween the Physical Input icon and the sequence input(to recording and thru) icon. No matter where the Multi Instrument icon is positioned with reference to all the other icons such as the Inport Nodes icon, agrey box will appear saying, "Cable and Channel ports are set. Do you want to remove the channels port setting?" Then I have the option of selecting "no' or "remove". And I still have the same problem, which is that all the record enabled virtual instruments are playing at the same time when triggered by my external midi controller, no matter what the channels selected are.

When I create a channel strip with external instruments it freaks out whenever I use pitch bend. Example: I have a Yamaha Motif XS rack plugged into the MIDI out on the MOTU. When I define this instrument in the channel strip and play I hear all the notes just fine. I apply pitch bend and can hear no difference in sound until I get to the top of the PB range then the sound suddenly jumps an octave. Releasing PB brings the sound down but not to the original note. It's off by a second and I have to cycle the power on the synth to get it back to normal pitch. I've tried this with different MIDI interfaces, synths, and controllers and still the same effect. This appears to be a pretty serious bug and I haven't found any way around it.

    Anyone else have this problem?

    DB:3.10:Midi Pitch Bend Wierdness zj

I believe this problem as been reported as a bug. I experienced the same problem with trying to control an external VL70m synth with my EWI.

What I did to solve the problem was set up midi pipe and connect to the synth directly outside of MS2 which lets me control it properly. I use my EWI to send program changes to MS2 so I also filtered out program changes in midi pipe so the VL70m only received its program changes from MS2.

Under your help menu in Logic you have the PDF manual. Open that, and type "multiplayer" in the search field. The manual fully documents the feature...

The only thing you need to do is make sure each of your transmitting keyboards are sending on a different MIDI channel. That done, you can easily assign which arrange track (and therefore which instrument) will respond to each MIDI channel (and therefore which transmitting keyboard.)

    To myself :-)

Didn?t read it was connected trough USB, so forget about the MIDI THRU and sync stuff. USB network has it own latency, altough it way faster than MIDI, it could slow down by the hardware/software PC configuration. Avoid using USB hubs, if your computer allow this, try to assign an IRQ to USB (BIOS Setup). If the USB you?re connecting it is from an independent PCI card, try switching it onto another slot.

When I use violin and other orchestral sounds from ESX24 and other instruments, the volume is pretty low. I've turned the volume knobs up on the virtual instruments, but no real difference. Other sounds, such as synths, guitars, ect., have great volume and get up to 0 db and beyond, but not the strings.

Does anybody know how to boost the volume on virtual orchestral instruments?

    Thanks,

    - Logiclark

    Adding to Z's post.

Software instruments are not "Just MIDI".

Software instruments are as, processor intensive (if not more) as audio FX like chorus, reverb delay.

So, it's not just MIDI you're using... you could say it was just MIDI if the MIDI data was being sent to external MIDI modules/keyboards.

I've been using Garageband for a while to record inputs such as electric guitar and mandolin, but I'm likely to soon purchase a MIDI keyboard controller to use with Garageband's synth options. I know basic options like modulation and velocity are supported, but some MIDI controllers have support for additional controls, to be assigned to software parameters. My question is this: on such a MIDI keyboard, would it be possible with Garageband to assign these extra assignable controls to software synth parameters in Garageband, such as attack or decay? If so, how do I do this?I'll probably get a Alesis QX49, if that helps. Many thanks!

This is an update to my post on April 29.I have kept trying to get the M-Audio Oxygen 25 to control more than just note input, and I DID get it to work properly. I took exhaustive searching on the M-Audio support website, and when I downloaded the proper software called DirectLink, and installed it on my MacBook, I figured out how to set the preset on the keyboard to P 10, and all the knobs and the slider and other buttons did what they were suppose to.The Oxygen 49, 61, and 88 key midi controllers do even more (more sliders).Problem solved! If needed, when I have more time, I can point to more specific files, etc.Henrytd

DB:3.05:Single Midi Message Triggers Multiple Software Instruments? 3s

    Hi guys,

I have been trying to figure out how to achieve this for quite a while now. I guess the key must be hidden in Logic's Environment features so I'd be happy if an expert would comment on this.

Anyway, this is what I intend to do: A single MIDI message (i.e. programmed on a seperate software instrument channel) should trigger multiple other soft-instruments. This makes sense if all used soft-instr. share the same GM standard, like drum-instruments. So my idea is i.e. to concentrate on and edit one single midi-channel to which other soft-instruments relate.

Sure, I may copy my main midi-sequence to the other soft-instruments tracks manually, but as the arrangement progresses you have to correct every single change done within the master midi-sequence on the copied sequences, too, and that is a real pita.

Thanks for your time, I appreciate
    Vic

Instrument 1(Piano) is set to Channel 2 (Set it by clicking the drop down for Inst 1)

Instrument 2(Strings) is also set to Channel 2, set the same way except for Inst 2

Instrument 3(Guitar) is set to Channel 3.

All tracks are armed. I can hear the piano and guitar, but not strings.
When I drag the strings track above the piano track in the Global Track, I can hear the strings, but not the piano. It only records and monitors the top track. How can I monitor and record both the instruments at the same time?

Another annoyance is when I have instrument tracks armed, and click an audio track to edit the parameters in Global Track, it automatically unarms my instruments, what's with that?

Ok... I understand real world mixers and cables and all that, but the Logic 8 documentation lacks any simple coherent description of how to connect and use external MIDI instruments. Here's the deal:
    1. I have a bunch of real instruments, plugged into a mixer.
    2. I have the mixer outputs plugged into input 3-4 of a FA101 firewire audio interface.
    3. All my MIDI stuff is fully setup and described in Audio MIDI setup
    4. All the MIDI stuff shows up in the Library Browser guy on the right of the arrange window and
I can create MIDI tracks for these instruments.

Now... to get their sound into Logic, I create an Audio track whose inputs are 3-4, turn on record for that track, make the MIDI stuff sing and then record the audio as an audio file to use in the mix? Works but kind of clunky...

Is there a way to create and Audio IN object in the Environment so the externally generated audio just gets mixed in in realtime with all the internally generated stuff?

The manuals are not helpful at all in basic sample configurations, except for purely software instruments. Though I did hook up my Space Echo (real box) in Logic. Again not well described in the manual.

I'm thinking of buying Logic Studio and Mainstage is one of the most appealing things for me. I'm wondering, though, if anyone has used a Midi guitar with it.

I have a Godin LGX-SA which has the Midi outputs and I'm wondering if and how my guitar might work with Mainstage. If I plugged it into a Roland module there are knobs and switches that actually act as controllers...would Mainstage recognize these? Would I be able to assign certain instruments to the guitar signal? Would the amp modeler work via Midi or would I have to use an audio signal for that?

I realize I have a pretty odd guitar and there aren't a lot of people who even know who Godin is, but any suggestions or similar experiences would help.

    DB:3.02:Mainstage With Midi-Enabled Guitar 8p

I have a Godin LGX-SA as well. You have to understand that the output is not actually MIDI. It's a 13-pin synth output that is made to work almost exclusively with the Roland synths. If you're going first into the Roland, then from that into your computer, you might be able to route the switches on the guitar to certain controls in Mainstage. But keep in mind that you will not be able to go directly from the Godin into Mainstage. Even if there were a 13-pin to 5-pin MIDI adapter (which I don't think there is), it wouldn't be sending actual MIDI signals.

I've been using Reaper for two years and as very satisfied with it. Sometimes I record three input controllers playing different software instruments at the same time. I also have a setup for jamming with my friends where I can go from my keyboard to my wind controller to my midi guitar (each sending from a USB port) without having to change anything on the computer. So I need the possibility to specify which midi port sends data to which software instrument track. I searched through the manual and have not found anything realted to this. In Reaper, you could directly select midi input port and channel from the track panel. It shouldn't be complicated to do since the midi configuration window shows all the midi controllers as eparate entities.

DB:3.01:How Can I Specify Midi Input Port For A Track In Logic Pro X? 8k

I will further check about that and see whether i can figure out a way to resolve your problem. However, i would first like to double confirm whether you have adjsted midi setting in your physical keyboards so that they have midi out only to the assigned channel (e.g. based on my previous example, keyboard 1 "only" sends data to midi channel 1, instead of sending data to "all" channels). It is correct that the data from all physical inputs are bundled together to the sequencer, however through the channel splitter, it seems that only data from the intended channel will reach the targeted track under recording.

As far as i know your monitoring will always be analogue.

You could consider the quality of the DAC which is feeding the signal to the monitors.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital-to-analog_converter

This however, gets quite academic and extremely expensive very quickly.

I think initially reasonable monitors, their placement, your listening position and your rooms' acoustics will make the biggest difference.

When i got my Numark 4TRAK someone from Numark helped me using the tool MIDI Monitor; the system had to 'learn' the signals coming in from the USB port. I have tried to let it 'learn' the MIDI signals from the USB port. This does not work.Does anyone have a clue how to reset the MIDI or something so that al my MIDI controller devices work like they should?I know from the old days you could reset the EPROM with some difficult key-combo or to let it rebuild the desktop file with another combo...I hope someone can help me :-)Thanks a million!Cheers, Tom

DB:2.99:Tunnel Sound When Recording Midi? Please Help! 3x

I am writing a new song, and using several software instruments on separate tracks of course. Everything sounded fine up until I got into track 4 or 5 of the software instruments. I started to record some violin and it sounded fine when I recorded it, but sounded like it had some weird tunnel effect on it when I played it back. There are no effects or eq's on it that are making it sound like that. I was wondering why this was happening and how to solve it. Do I need to convert my midi files into audio? If so how do I do that? I was under the impression I could have as many software instrument tracks as I wanted without affecting the overall sound.

Also to add that without the USB connection you cannot use the Enigma software with your controller. At least thats how it was with my trigger finger.

DB:2.99:How To Access Audio Instruments As Midi Channels From Midi Keyboard? 9a

    Hi!

This is my first post here.
I use mostly Logic Pro 7 as a sound module with my keyboard. I have a song file in Logic that I made some time ago, where I've linked every audio instrument to a corresponding audio channel (same midi channel). All channels are in record mode, and thus every audio instrument is assigned a midi channel - and I can play different audio instruments by changing the midi channel on my midi keyboard.

Now, I want to create more tracks, so I can have more instruments to choose between. That doesn't work.. I try to make a new logic file and do the same thing with more channels, but I can't remeber how I made this work in the first place. I've been trying for hours and hours, and I'm going nuts here.
I would extremely grateful if anyone could tell me how this is done.
    (No rewire/extra software is necessary.)

    Thanks for reading.

I have a Casio CTK-2100 that I am currently playing around with in Logic Pro 9. It can record and playback the different instruments fine using MIDI tracks. But I was wondering if it is possible to use the keyboard as an input device for a software instrument instead of the "Step Input Keyboard".Is it? If so, how do I set it up?

DB:2.98:Can I Use A Midi Keyboard As An Input Device For A Software Instrument? j8

Yes, the terminology can be a bear, many, many years ago when I started using Logic the manuals were written completely by the programmers, while they were quite humorous in places the were also really hard to understand so I learned/realized.. you can't really do anything so wrong it's going to destroy your computer so why not go ahead and experiment. I learned the basics of Logic without a manual, months later when I went back to find some some details I could figure out the manual made a lot more sense. Logic has been somewhat Appleized but it's not really an Apple program, it was purchased almost as developed as it is now... a lot of the additions a fluff to make it easier to understand for new users while at the same time there are some real improvements. This is personal opinion: With all of the forums/online tutorials...etc...etc. It seems users are learning (but not understanding) the same things, plus everyone wants to use it right away so nobody takes a deep breath and investigates on their own. Logic is a deep, deep program, while learning don't be afraid to go off on a tangent and explore the program without any other input, it can actually be inspirational. One other thing good about the manual or "Online Help", in looking up a function you will invariably come across a related concept that will provide further insight.And..... have fun.

My MSI motherboard does not have a MIDI port for my game controllers. I tried putting a sound card in with a midi port but windows XP does not see it. How can I get a MIDI port? Do I have to somehow disable the built in sound capability on the MB to get the inserted sound card and its MIDI port to work?

depending on your sound card (you dont say which one, so i dont know) there may be a jumper on it which enables / disables the gameport (as it is known)

alternatively, you could use USB game controllers. this would also allow you to connect more than one controller for some serious multiplayer action (me and my brother played Escape From The Planet Of The Robot Monsters through MAME the other week for four hours solid - REAL fun!! )

So far all I can do is get them both to play the same soft-synth. Im not sure if I create them as separate midi instrument tracks and then route them to software synth tracks themselves, or if theres something simpler. Either way I'm doing it wrong, Im still getting a grasp on midi and routing channels still very new to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DB:2.94:Tascam Usb Midi Interface Problems... 7f

    Hello,
I recently switched to using Windows 8.1 and have had nothing but hassles connecting midi hardware. The current problem is with incompatibility to a TASCAM US-122 Audio/MIDI interface. It seems there are little to no USB controllers that work
seamlessly with the new OS. I am being told the lack of driver is TASCAM's fault, not MS, yet I'm unclear how I could run into driver issues with both a midi keyboard, a midi trigger pad, and now the controller I've used with no problems for several
    years.
There were two 'workarounds' (a name that is becoming synonymous when dealing with Windows 8.1) I found for this problem. The first was to 'update the driver' directly from the device manager, the second was to try to run the driver software using
a compatibility interface. Even choosing my own USB device, I got to a screen prompt letting me know that the US-122 just wasn't compatible and could potentially cause harm! Not being able to plug a mixer, pre-amp, microphone, electric cello etc.
into my computer renders it virtually useless to me.
Is there a USB midi/audio interface that is proven to work at all with Windows 8.1?
Is there any option to expand the midi capability with this system?
Is there a reason all my colleagues keep saying a Mac is worth the money?
Also, to the techs who may reply to this question; yes, I have tried unplugging and re-plugging things. I have also tried re-booting, and using any available options in any of the sub screens involved in this process. It floors me after reading
some of your responses that you would assume a musician working with several midi devices, a complex DAW, and often several musical instruments wouldn't think to unplug and re plug something.

DB:2.94:Tascam Usb Midi Interface Problems... 7f

I'm agree ifmost of Apple productis more compatible with those kind of devices
Butas home musician :) I'mnot agree if you think that its not compatible with Windows 8.1, I would say its not compatible yet, because most of that device launched before Windows 8.1 release, some of the manufactured will be update their driver
trough software update or viafirmware update (unless that product is discontinue or don't have anymore support)

Example for your Midi devices which TASCAM US-122 Audio/MIDI interface, even that product already discontinued and Windows 8.1 just launched last year. Most of this midi devices is plug and play, its supposed to be depend software that you are using like
    Cubase, garage band or else
My suggestion is find the reliable audio software which support to Windows 8.1 first, and do most of audio processing outside the PC using preamp or mixer, and made the input to the PC using single input soundcard (external or internal)
I've proofed that my Behringer mixer work with both my Windows 8.1 and MacBook via Cube base and garage band. I put all the instrument to mixer and via build in external sound card from BehringerI plug it to my PC, so I Control everything from my mixer

Unless you want to buy high tech mixer with wireless capability it will be awesome, like presonus or else
OS is not the limitation, you can install your Windows PC with Mac OS also you can installed your Mac with Windows OS. Update your Windows PC chipset to get the latest USB peripheral and PCI controller device list
You should posted this question to audio forum, not here, so other professional sound engineer will assist you better. Good luck anyway

This is probably simple, but I'm a novice with midi in general let alone midi controllers, keyboards and DAWs.I have MainStage 3 setup with a Yamaha 61-key midi keyboard and a Novation 25-key midi controller. In addition to MainStage's B3 Organ instruments that are built into that program, I have access through MS3 to my Native Instruments' Vintage Organs audio units. My dilemma is - how do I assign upper manual and lower manual keyboard settings to either the Yamaha, the Novation, or even a split keyboard on either? In other words, I open the setting for the audio units/instruments, make changes to their upper and lower drawbars (which are beautifully rendered in either MS3 or NI), close the settings window - - now scratch my head - - where is either the upper or lower manuals sending to? Is it simple? I have to set the drawbars simultaneously, both upper and lower. It just doesn't connect in my head how or where those separate manuals are now played on my hardware. How do I assign or map 1/2 of an instrument's setting? I'm wondering if this is some setting that involves a different midi channel for the parts of the organ (upper, lower, foot pedals)? If so, that is where I also get lost - remember: I'm a midi novice.Hope the question makes sense. If not please ask questions. Thanks in advance for any help.

DB:2.94:How To Control The Upper &Amp; Lower Manuals Of A Mainstage3 Organ Au? ax

HiDHodges wrote:TI didn't know what Multi-timbral was, but your answer sheds some light on that one, etc.). Multi-Timbral = a synth (or plugin) that plays different sounds independently on different MIDI channels. The Vintage Organ plug is not a perfect example, since the 3 sounds can be pretty similar, but nonetheless, it is multi-timbral.CCT

I recorded midi performances with software instruments (distorted startocaster and 12-string acoustic), both of which appear in stereo midi tracks and output through aux or output tracks. I want to know how to control panning, as both seem to have panned right and the portion of the sound that is panning left is so faint as to be unusable. I have tried bouncing these to audio tracks (mono and stereo) but the audio track strips also lack left channel content. The only way I can pan these is to invoke "surround sound" and then place them in that field, which seems like overkill.

    DB:2.94:Panning Midi - Suggestions? ss

    Stu:

The panning difficulty seems to be related to the "special" output features of the Sculpture (which plays the distorted strat software instrument emulation). Are you saying you can pan the distorted strat without difficulty? Can you list your settings for the output and panning? Shouldn't I be able to pan after bouncing the software instrument performance to an audio file? I am perplexed. Thanks for your help.

Okay. I JUST got Logic, and I have NO idea what I'm doing, but I guess first things first . . .

I don't even know if this is the proper place to post this, but I don't know where else to. Hopefully I can be directed to the proper area if I don't get an answer here.

I purchased an M-Audio Oxygen 61 midi controller along with Logic Pro 7, and 1) not only do I know nothing (practically) about this program (as stated earlier), but, even worse, or more dismall 2) I have NO idea how to program anything or use anything on this midi keyboard. I have no experience in midi controllers, and, aside from being able to load up and play the different software instruments in Logic and Garage Band, I have no idea how to ASSIGN functions - like how to use these many knobs to alter and sculpt the sound of the instrument.

Just so no one thinks I haven't been attempting to help myself, I went to M-Audio and I've been reading (or TRYING to read) the manual to the Oxygen 61 - but since I know so very little, I don't even understand the terms really . . .

It's almost like I'm so lost that I don't even know what questions to begin asking regarding how to use the midi keyboard to program stuff . . .

Someone help me please. I guess, again, the one question is: Can someone help give me a simple step by step manner on how to program a parameter using my midi keyboard? (without saying "Go look in the manual" - because, again, I've been doing/trying that, and it's not helping).

Too many or too fast, and the sound drops out.
